After years of planning, construction delays, and supply chain headaches, the new Hilton Garden Inn and Convention Center in Hutchinson is finally within sight of opening its doors.

Raju Sheth, a managing member of Amber Hotels and the developer behind the project, provided an update to the Hutchinson City Council at their meeting on Tuesday, sharing that the hotel is about 90 days away from welcoming its first guests — with a hopeful opening date in September or October.

“Finally, my elevator is here,” Sheth said, noting that while key components like the elevator have arrived, some critical items, like the hotel’s doors, remain stuck at ports. “We paid for those doors six months ago, and they’re still sitting in Los Angeles.”

Sheth said the project has faced no shortage of obstacles, from global supply chain disruptions and weather setbacks to new tariffs that unexpectedly increased costs. A severe rainstorm just weeks ago caused an estimated $15,000 in damage when high winds shattered tempered glass windows, requiring expensive replacements.

Despite the challenges, the upper floors of the 112-room hotel are nearly finished, with plumbing, cabinetry, shower doors, and other fixtures in place. Work now focuses on completing the lobby and the adjacent convention center.

Hilton requires that at least 75% of guest rooms be fully ready before any soft opening is allowed, and final inspections — including extensive technology and Wi-Fi requirements — must be passed. Sheth said that meeting those standards has added time, since they must rely on Hilton’s approved vendors.

“If it were up to me, we’d be open already,” Sheth said with a laugh. “But Hilton has their own processes, and they come at their sweet time.”

In the meantime, the hotel’s general manager has been hired, and other key positions, including an executive housekeeper and marketing staff, will be finalized soon. New hires are expected to begin onboarding in August.

Originally planned as a 100-room hotel, the project has expanded to 112 rooms, thanks in part to strong local financial support. Sheth thanked First National Bank for being a “good partner” throughout the process.

“I’m not asking anyone for money,” Sheth added. “I just want people to know the hardships we’ve gone through to get here. But it’s going to be a beautiful property and we can’t wait to open our doors to Hutchinson.”

Developer gives update on Hilton Garden Inn 

Reno County officials are taking significant steps to boost housing, revitalize aging properties, and tap into renewable energy as part of ongoing efforts to address some of the county’s most pressing needs.

Last week, the Reno County Commission approved a countywide Neighborhood Revitalization Plan, aimed at breathing new life into neglected or aging properties. The plan incentivizes homeowners and commercial property owners to improve their buildings by offering a property tax rebate.

“This is really about giving property owners that extra push to fix up homes and buildings that otherwise might sit in disrepair,” said County Administrator Randy Partington. Properties valued under $250,000 can qualify for the program. After improvements are made, owners will receive a five-year rebate on the increase in their property taxes resulting from the renovations.

Previously, similar revitalization programs existed only within certain cities like Hutchinson, Haven, and Buhler. Now, the countywide plan makes the incentive available throughout Reno County, including unincorporated areas, and gives smaller cities the option to opt in.

Tackling Affordable Housing
Affordable housing remains a top concern for local leaders, who point to an ongoing shortage of quality, attainable homes across the county. Last week, the commission approved an agreement with developer Jim Strachan to make new homes in the Plum Creek subdivision more affordable.

Under the plan, buyers could see up to $9,000 shaved off the cost of a lot thanks to county funds, helping lower the total purchase price. “Sometimes it takes a little assistance to make these projects pencil out,” said Partington, noting the county’s broader housing development policy encourages similar partnerships with other cities and developers.

In addition, Reno County has already partnered with the City of Hutchinson on another development project near 11th and Hendricks and has contributed ARPA funds to organizations like Interfaith Housing to support various projects throughout the county.

Turning Trash into Renewable Cash
County officials are also working on an innovative plan to convert methane gas from the Reno County landfill into a revenue-generating resource. Through an agreement with Meadowlark Renewables, the county would allow the company to capture and convert landfill gas into usable methane, which would then be sold on the market.

Currently, excess gases are burned off through flares. If the project moves forward, it could generate an estimated $400,000 to $500,000 per year for the county, helping fund landfill operations and possibly stabilizing rates for residents. “This is a great example of turning an environmental challenge into a financial opportunity,” Partington said.

Crunching the Numbers
Meanwhile, the county’s annual budget process is underway, with a goal of keeping the mill levy as flat as possible. Reno County’s total proposed budget is about $80 million, covering all expenditures — not just taxes.

Partington said his team has already made adjustments to offset about $4 million in initial projected increases through higher revenue estimates and cash balance shifts. They’re now working to close a final $1.8 million gap before presenting a maximum budget to the County Commission on July 16.

To explore new revenue streams that could ease the property tax burden, Reno County has also contracted Wichita State University to survey residents about the possibility of a countywide sales tax. Any increase above the current limit would require approval from the Kansas Legislature, so the county hopes to have survey results by year’s end to prepare for the 2026 session if needed.

“Whether it’s housing, revitalization, renewable energy, or the budget, our focus is on using every tool we have to make Reno County a place where people want to live, work, and invest,” Partington said.

Local Independence Day celebrations

After just one month on the job, Graham Klemme, the new Executive Director of StartUp Hutch, is already laying out ambitious plans to expand the local entrepreneurial ecosystem in Reno County and beyond.

In a recent interview on BW Radio, Klemme shared his excitement about moving to Hutchinson and how the community’s warm welcome has set the tone for what he hopes will be a new era of collaboration and growth.

“Everyone’s been incredibly welcoming and supportive,” Klemme said. “This is the kind of work I love to do, and to have a community where everyone’s aligned, working together to make things happen — it’s a real blessing.”

Originally from Iowa City, Iowa, Klemme’s path to Hutchinson has taken him coast to coast. With a background that spans grassroots political organizing, tech policy at companies like Airbnb and Fiverr, and a stint running a national accelerator program, he brings a diverse set of skills and connections to the role.

At StartUp Hutch, Klemme oversees the organization’s day-to-day operations and works closely with the board of directors and one full-time staff member. Together, they help local businesses and entrepreneurs access resources — including gap financing loans up to $50,000 through partnerships with Network Kansas — and programs designed to help new ventures launch and grow.

But Klemme is eager to do more than maintain the status quo. His vision includes building stronger ties with Hutchinson Community College to engage students and faculty, and exploring ways to reach new groups who may not see themselves as entrepreneurs yet — such as artists and creatives.

“We’d like to partner with the art center to help artists learn business skills,” Klemme explained. “There are so many people who are inherently entrepreneurial and just need a little support to turn ideas into sustainable businesses.”

One major focus is reviving and expanding the youth entrepreneurship program. Klemme wants to see 20 to 50 teams participate in the annual Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, hosted in partnership with local schools and the state program.

“If we want to think about where Reno County is 50 years from now, we need to make sure this next generation is prepared to start and scale businesses that will have an economic impact,” he said.

Klemme is also taking StartUp Hutch’s mission on the road — literally. He plans to visit surrounding communities like Pretty Prairie, Buhler, and Nickerson, setting up “pop-up entrepreneurship labs” at local events to connect with residents and offer resources.

Collaboration with the broader region is key too. Klemme will speak at Wichita’s 1 Million Cups event later this month to help put Hutchinson on the map and strengthen partnerships with organizations like the South Central Kansas Economic Development District and Nexus.

Looking ahead, Klemme wants to bring new resources to StartUp Hutch, including micro-grants to help entrepreneurs test ideas and grow their businesses. He’s also working to diversify the organization’s funding base and deepen its role in the Reno County Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Partnership, a coalition focused on aligning local economic development efforts.

His message to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple: come see what StartUp Hutch can do for you.

With a background that spans grassroots political organizing, tech policy at companies like Airbnb and Fiverr, and a stint running a national accelerator program, he brings a diverse set of skills and connections to the role.At StartUp Hutch, Klemme oversees the organization’s day-to-day operations and works closely with the board of directors and one full-time staff member. Together, they help local businesses and entrepreneurs access resources — including gap financing loans up to $50,000 through partnerships with Network Kansas — and programs designed to help new ventures launch and grow.But Klemme is eager to do more than maintain the status quo. His vision includes building stronger ties with Hutchinson Community College to engage students and faculty, and exploring ways to reach new groups who may not see themselves as entrepreneurs yet — such as artists and creatives.“We’d like to partner with the art center to help artists learn business skills,” Klemme explained. “There are so many people who are inherently entrepreneurial and just need a little support to turn ideas into sustainable businesses.”<figure>

Klemme wants to see 20 to 50 teams participate in the annual Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge, hosted in partnership with local schools and the state program.“If we want to think about where Reno County is 50 years from now, we need to make sure this next generation is prepared to start and scale businesses that will have an economic impact,” he said.Klemme is also taking StartUp Hutch’s mission on the road — literally. He plans to visit surrounding communities like Pretty Prairie, Buhler, and Nickerson, setting up “pop-up entrepreneurship labs” at local events to connect with residents and offer resources.Collaboration with the broader region is key too. Klemme will speak at Wichita’s 1 Million Cups event later this month to help put Hutchinson on the map and strengthen partnerships with organizations like the South Central Kansas Economic Development District and Nexus.Looking ahead, Klemme wants to bring new resources to StartUp Hutch, including micro-grants to help entrepreneurs test ideas and grow their businesses. New Executive Director brings fresh vision to StartUp Hutch 

It’s been an unusually wet June across central Kansas, with rainfall totals far surpassing average levels for the month.

According to recent data, Hutchinson recorded 8.54 inches of rain in June — more than double its normal monthly average of 4.2 inches. Newton received 9.76 inches compared to its usual 5.2 inches, while McPherson saw an even higher total of 10.23 inches, far above its typical 4.75 inches for the month.

The 8.54 inches of rain for Hutchinson makes it the fifth wettest June on record.  The wettest?  June of 1948 where 11.83 inches of rain fell.&nbsp;

The heavy rainfall has had a noticeable impact on Cheney Lake, as the water level rose by nearly six feet over the past month, increasing from 1,415.99 feet on June 1 to 1,421.9 feet as of this morning. The lake’s conservation pool is now 97.6% full, providing a significant boost to water supply heading into the summer months.

Demolition work began on Monday at the site of Steffens Auto Parts , the local business that was destroyed by a natural gas explosion earlier this year.

Owner Darrin Clifford told Hutch Post that while the clean-up brings some relief, the road ahead is still uncertain. “I’m still dealing with the insurance, but this is a step forward,” Clifford said. He added that no plans have been determined yet for what will come next for the property.

Steffens Auto Parts was devastated by an explosion on Feb. 22, which investigators say was caused by a leak at a girth weld on a natural gas line. The blast leveled the business and left behind questions that will take time to resolve as Clifford works through the recovery process.

For now, the demolition clears away the visible reminder of the tragedy, but the future of the site — and the business — remains to be seen.

🏈 2025 Hutch Post-area high school schedules

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man whose life has been defined by service, to his country, his community, and his fellow veterans, will lead this year’s Eagle Media Patriots Parade in downtown Hutchinson on Friday, July 4. 

Lowell Downey, a U.S. Air Force veteran and longtime advocate for the Kansas Honor Flight program, has been named Grand Marshal for the Independence Day celebration.

“I am looking forward to it,” Downey said. “Both my wife and I are excited about it.”

Downey has called Hutchinson home since 1987. Today, he resides at The Wesley retirement community, where he received the call with the invitation to serve as Grand Marshal.

“Our director of marketing at The Wesley gave me a call and asked if I would do it,” he said. “I’ve lived in Hutch a long time, I’m pretty much a permanent resident, so it means a lot to be part of something like this.”

Downey is best known for his work with the Kansas Honor Flight program, which has taken more than 4,000 Kansas veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials built in their honor. He helped found the Hutchinson-based chapter in 2012 after discovering financial mismanagement at a previous organization. Since then, he’s become the central organizer of the local flight program, handling everything from veteran applications to trip logistics and fundraising.

To date, Kansas Honor Flight has completed 103 flights. Downey has personally attended 34 of them.

“It’s very rewarding,” Downey said. “When we started, we took World War II veterans, many of whom had never flown before. To watch them see the memorials for the first time was incredibly emotional.”

He recalled trips to the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, where veterans stood in awe of the Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

“Some of the veterans would say, ‘That airplane probably saved my life,’ because they were scheduled to be part of the invasion of Japan,” he said.

Today, the Honor Flight focus has shifted to Vietnam veterans, many of whom were never properly welcomed home.

“Vietnam veterans were treated terribly when they returned,” Downey said. “They didn’t get closure. Taking them to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, letting them see the names on the wall, it brings that closure. You can see the emotion. It’s powerful.”

Downey served in the U.S. Air Force and later in the Air National Guard during the early 1960s, between the Korean and Vietnam wars. His service kept him stateside, where he worked as a machinist and aircraft maintenance specialist in Nebraska and Iowa.

“I met a lot of good people,” Downey said. “We just worked hard to keep airplanes flying.”

Downey’s leadership extends beyond military service. After spending 27 years in the fertilizer industry, he joined Collingwood Grain in Hutchinson in 1987. He was named president of the company following its acquisition by Archer Daniels Midland Corporation, serving in that role for 13 years until retiring at the end of 2002.

Following his official retirement, he continued working as a fertilizer broker and later consulted on a proposed fertilizer plant in Idaho.

Even in retirement, Downey remained devoted to service. He and his first wife were early volunteers for Kansas Honor Flight, serving as guardians on several of the organization’s earliest trips. After his wife passed away in 2017, Downey eventually moved into a duplex at The Wesley, where a new chapter of life quietly began.

“There was this charming lady who lived on the other side,” he said. “She brought me cookies from time to time. Long story short, we were married in 2019 and have been married six years. She’s been on one flight with me.”

Today, Downey helps coordinate four honor flights each year, now via chartered aircraft. Each flight includes around 100 veterans and a carefully planned support team, with stops at Arlington National Cemetery, the war memorials on the National Mall, and various museums.

“It takes a lot of planning, but it’s worth every second,” Downey said. “These trips change people’s lives.”

The Patriots Parade begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4, in downtown Hutchinson. For Downey, leading the celebration is a reflection not only of his military and professional achievements, but of a lifetime spent giving back to the community he now calls home.

Downey brings lifetime of service to center stage as Patriots Parade Grand Marshal

Four local agencies that provide substance abuse prevention, intervention, and treatment services are slated to receive more than $84,000 in 2026 under recommendations included in the Hutchinson City Council’s consent agenda.

State law requires cities to spend one-third of their liquor drink tax revenue on programs addressing alcoholism and drug abuse. A small committee reviews applications from local organizations and recommends funding allocations each year.

The proposed awards for 2026 include $10,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters, which helps at-risk children ages 5 to 17 avoid drugs and alcohol through one-on-one mentoring relationships with screened volunteers.

The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson would receive $22,500 to continue its Positive Action program, which serves more than 1,000 youth ages 6 to 18 each year. The program focuses on character and leadership development, health and life skills, and proven prevention strategies.

Rise Up Reno, which targets students in grades 6 through 12 with mentoring, substance use prevention, and family leadership programs, would receive $26,500 to help cover administrative expenses not fully covered by grants.

The Reno County Drug Court program is recommended to receive $25,500. The program provides intensive supervision and treatment alternatives for offenders with substance abuse problems, with support from a multi-agency team. Funds will help cover the cost of a defense attorney, training, and incentives for participants who make positive choices.

According to documents in the agenda, the City estimates it will have about $451,865 in its Special Alcohol Program Fund for 2026, with an anticipated ending balance of more than $367,000 after the awards and other expenditures.

City staff recommended funding each agency at its full requested amount, citing their use of proven, research-based methods and collaborative efforts to deliver wrap-around services to the community.

A small committee reviews applications from local organizations and recommends funding allocations each year.The proposed awards for 2026 include $10,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters, which helps at-risk children ages 5 to 17 avoid drugs and alcohol through one-on-one mentoring relationships with screened volunteers.The Boys and Girls Club of Hutchinson would receive $22,500 to continue its Positive Action program, which serves more than 1,000 youth ages 6 to 18 each year. The program focuses on character and leadership development, health and life skills, and proven prevention strategies.Rise Up Reno, which targets students in grades 6 through 12 with mentoring, substance use prevention, and family leadership programs, would receive $26,500 to help cover administrative expenses not fully covered by grants.The Reno County Drug Court program is recommended to receive $25,500. The program provides intensive supervision and treatment alternatives for offenders with substance abuse problems, with support from a multi-agency team. As the Fourth of July and other summer celebrations approach, families and friends are stocking up on fireworks to light up the night sky. But with that excitement comes the very real risk of injury and fire.&nbsp;

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 180 people go to the emergency room every day around the Fourth of July due to fireworks-related injuries. Most injuries involve burns to the hands, face, and eyes — and nearly half of the victims are children and teens.&nbsp;

So how can you enjoy the sparkle safely?&nbsp; Here are a few key tips from fire and safety officials:&nbsp;

Leave the big displays to the pros.&nbsp; Professional fireworks shows are the safest way to enjoy fireworks. If you do buy consumer fireworks, make sure they’re legal in your area and only purchase from licensed sellers.&nbsp;

Always follow instructions.&nbsp; Read and follow all safety labels. Light fireworks one at a time and back up quickly. Never relight a “dud.”&nbsp;

Keep water handy.&nbsp; Have a bucket of water or a garden hose ready in case of fire. Soak used fireworks thoroughly before throwing them away.&nbsp;

Keep a safe distance.&nbsp; Spectators should watch from at least 25–50 feet away. Never allow young children to handle fireworks and closely supervise older kids.&nbsp;

Beware of dry fields.&nbsp; Be mindful of your surroundings. Dry grass, wheat stubble, or drought conditions can quickly turn a spark into a dangerous wildfire.&nbsp;

Never mix alcohol and fireworks.&nbsp; Drinking impairs judgment and slows reaction times — a dangerous combination around explosives.&nbsp;

Firework safety tips to keep your Fourth fun and safe

If you’re reading this, it’s fair to assume you have decent eyesight. Now, just for a moment, close your eyes and picture your favorite fireworks memory --- the smells, the booms, the cheers. Go ahead --- I’ll wait.

Alright. Now, I'd like to share a personal story with you.

I was 9 years old on July 5, 1987, when my family and I went to a Royals game. The Royals were playing the Toronto Blue Jays. I stuffed myself with hot dogs and one of those chocolate frozen malts that came with a flat wooden spoon. After the game, we drove back to our home in Tonganoxie.

My dad, my brother, and his friend grabbed what was left of our fireworks, mostly bottle rockets. These weren’t the kind you’re probably picturing; they were the plastic cone-tipped ones called Whistling Chasers. We lived on about 80 acres, and my dad had hammered metal pipes—bent at 90 degrees—into the ground to aim the rockets out toward the pasture.

Meanwhile, my sister and I were forced to stay inside, painfully watching as my brother and his friend had an absolute blast launching rockets into the clear summer sky.

Eventually, frustration got the best of me, and I whined until Dad agreed to let me join them. Before I was allowed outside, Dad and I went to the basement to build my own launcher. We secured it into the ground, and Dad told me to stand right next to him.

I stood there, thrilled, as my brother’s friend knelt down and lit a rocket with the ember of his punk. The rocket screamed - whistling, and screeching, that coyote-like shriek that sends a jolt of excitement straight to your chest.

It shot out… about 10 feet… then turned - and rocketed straight at me.

Time slowed down. I remember watching it cut through the air, the blades of grass beneath its path visible, and then - - - BAM.

Here’s where I want you to close your eyes again—but this time, keep your right eye closed. Just open your left. Are you with me? Good.

That’s how I’ve seen the world ever since that night. Sure, some blurry high-powered light sneaks through my damaged pupil and retina, reminding me that my right eye is still a part of me, but this is how I see the world.

The bottle rocket hit my right eye dead-on, bouncing off my eyeball before exploding. I don’t remember if I screamed in pain. I don’t think I did. I remember heat, the smell of spent gunpowder, panic, and turning to my dad to yell, “It hit my eye!”

Next thing I knew, I was standing in the kitchen with my head under the faucet while Mom tried to help. But I had to go to the ER.

My mom, sister, and I piled into our family’s white station wagon, and Mom didn’t ease off the gas the whole way to Providence Medical Center. It felt like we waited forever once we got there. Eventually, a nurse brought me back to a room. More waiting. Then the pain came. I got sick. I vomited on the floor. But I didn’t cry - I didn’t want anyone thinking I was weak or scared. I didn’t want my mom to worry.

I still remember the nurse covering my left eye and asking if I could see anything. I remember thinking how ridiculous that was. Of course, I couldn’t - I had blood in my eye, and the damage was already done.

I spent that night in the hospital. It was cold, and I still hate the feel of cold vinyl (or linoleum) tile on my feet because of that night.

The next day, we learned that the damage couldn’t be undone. I was lucky to keep the eyeball itself, but much of what was inside was eventually removed. I’ve had multiple surgeries since, and I’ve dealt with light sensitivity and a lazy eye ever since. I couldn’t play baseball anymore, but I became a helluva basketball player and ran track like my life depended on it – even earning a college scholarship.

That night didn’t just change me - it changed my family. It was part of what led to my parents’ divorce – they will deny that! It caused grief for my friends and family, and for a long time, it felt like my accident affected them more than it affected me.

Nearly 40 years later, I deal with it every single day. Every time I look in a mirror, I’m reminded. It’s hard sometimes - but it’s part of my story now. Like any scar, it’s a piece of a larger story waiting to be told, and I’m honestly grateful you took the time to read mine.

Now, open both eyes and read this: I hope my story helps prevent someone else from getting hurt. Enjoy your fireworks. Have fun.

For a quarter-century, Hutchinson has welcomed teenagers from Northern Ireland each summer through the Ulster Project — a faith-based peace and leadership program that continues to change lives on both sides of the Atlantic.

This summer, nine Northern Irish teens, both Catholic and Protestant, will arrive in Hutchinson on Tuesday evening after a grueling 24-hour journey. The goal: reconciliation and leadership development in a country still dealing with deep-rooted sectarian divides.

“The whole idea is to let young people see that they can have a voice and make a difference,” said Keith Neill, one of the project’s local organizers. “Over the years, we've seen that happen. Some of the teens who came to Hutchinson are now in government in Ireland, making the world a better place.”

Founded 50 years ago in the U.S. and Northern Ireland, the Ulster Project seeks to bring together young leaders who might never otherwise meet due to the historical tension between Catholic and Protestant communities. Hutchinson has been a proud host city since 2000, with only brief pauses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The experience is immersive: the Northern Irish youth live, work, and play side-by-side with their Kansas counterparts for 24 days, participating in a tightly scheduled mix of service projects, cultural outings, and community events.Activities this summer include pool parties, rope courses in Newton, visits to Wichita’s Cowtown, paintball, and even a stop at Chicken N Pickle. There’s also a strong community service component — the group will partner with TECH, Reins of Hope, and Boys and Girls Club, and will host a dinner and dance at the Anchor Inn for local clients of TECH.“It's a life-changing experience,” Keith Neill said. “You're doing something every day with these kids, and in three weeks, they become family.”One of the project’s most public events will be their participation in the Patriots Parade on July 4, where the group will march under a banner representing both Hutchinson and their home city of Portadown.The Ulster Project relies on a network of volunteers, donations, and host families to succeed.
