As the Fourth of July and other summer celebrations approach, families and friends are stocking up on fireworks to light up the night sky. But with that excitement comes the very real risk of injury and fire.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 180 people go to the emergency room every day around the Fourth of July due to fireworks-related injuries. Most injuries involve burns to the hands, face, and eyes — and nearly half of the victims are children and teens.

So how can you enjoy the sparkle safely?  Here are a few key tips from fire and safety officials:

Leave the big displays to the pros.  Professional fireworks shows are the safest way to enjoy fireworks. If you do buy consumer fireworks, make sure they’re legal in your area and only purchase from licensed sellers.

Always follow instructions.  Read and follow all safety labels. Light fireworks one at a time and back up quickly. Never relight a “dud.”

Keep water handy.  Have a bucket of water or a garden hose ready in case of fire. Soak used fireworks thoroughly before throwing them away.

Keep a safe distance.  Spectators should watch from at least 25–50 feet away. Never allow young children to handle fireworks and closely supervise older kids.

Beware of dry fields.  Be mindful of your surroundings. Dry grass, wheat stubble, or drought conditions can quickly turn a spark into a dangerous wildfire.

Never mix alcohol and fireworks.  Drinking impairs judgment and slows reaction times — a dangerous combination around explosives.
