Catherine ‘Kathy’ Ann Kappenman, 63, passed away March 8, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. She was born Aug. 24, 1957, in Mitchell, SD, to Norbert and Annabelle (Ernster) Hoffman.

Kathy was a 1975 graduate of Parkston High School, Parkston, SD. She earned an Associate of Arts Degree in the Medical Assistant’s Program from Nettleton College, Sioux Falls, SD. Kathy operated a home childcare center for 22 years. In 2009, she went to work as a food program specialist at Child Care Links and was still serving in that capacity at the time of her death.

On July 12, 1980, Kathy married Ralph Kappenman, in Dimock, SD. They shared over 40 years of marriage.

She is survived by husband, Ralph Kappenman of Hutchinson; sons, Matthew (Teressa) Kappenman of Lawrence, and Steven (Morgan) Kappenman of Hutchinson; mother, Annabelle Hoffman of Parkston, SD; grandsons, Lucas Kappenman and Landry Kappenman; and siblings, David (JoAnn) Hoffman, Douglas (Janis) Hoffman, Terry (Darcy) Hoffman, Mary (Dennis) Meyer, Linda (Keith) Mueller, Patty (Tim) Moran, Diane (fiancé, Toby Remmers) Murtha, and Renee (Tom) Semmler.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father, Norbert Hoffman, and parents-in-law, Robert and Veronica Kappenman.

Cremation has taken place. Parish Rosary will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2021, at Church of the Holy Cross, 2631 Independence Road, Hutchinson. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church. The Parish Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be officiated by Father Aaron Spexarth. Inurnment will be at a future date at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parkston, SD. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2021, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2021, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

The answer to Wednesday's burning Jayhawk West question of what team's five-game winning streak would be extended is …

Thanks to a gritty, tough defensive effort the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team outlasted the Barton Cougars 73-67 on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

Hutchinson extends its winning streak to six games and improves to 11-3 overall and maintains sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk West at 10-3. Barton had its five-game win streak snapped and falls to 7-5 overall and 6-5 in league play.

The Blue Dragon defense held Barton's high-scoring offense 25 points under its season-scoring average, holding the Cougars to 36.6 percent from the field. Barton connected on 7 of 31 3-pointers, but the Dragons had advantages of 42-30 in the paint and 17-8 in second-chance points.

With leading scorer&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>&nbsp;held scoreless in the first half, sophomore guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/okon_jaden_os3t">Jaden Okon</a>&nbsp;picked up the scoring slack with a career-high 17 points on 8 of 11 shooting to lead the Blue Dragons. He also had six rebounds and three assists.

Freshman guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/robinson_chris_q1cl">Chris Robinson</a>&nbsp;provided a needed spark in the first half when Barton took a 15-11 lead on a Willie Lapoole 3-pointer with 11:35 remaining.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/bujdoso_isaiah_t7bk">Isaiah Bujdoso</a>&nbsp;and Robinson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to turn things around for Hutch. Robinson scored all 10 of his points in the first 20 minutes to pace the Dragons to a 32-30 halftime lead.

Despite the slow start, Mayers posted his eighth consecutive double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Bujdoso and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/baker_josh_lpkm">Josh Baker</a>&nbsp;added nine points each and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/selebangue_bryant_zo4s">Bryant Selebangue</a>&nbsp;had eight.

The Blue Dragons shot 45.3 percent overall (29 of 64). The Dragons were only 2 of 13 from 3-point range and 13 of 18 from the free-throw line. The Dragons had a 51-32 rebounding advantage.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/kuath_majok_xrls">Majok Kuath</a>&nbsp;had 10 rebounds.

Justin Harmon led the Cougars with 14 points. Jaheim Holden had 13 points and Asanti Price had 12.

Holden hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and give Barton a 33-32 lead, but the Blue Dragons immediately answered. Mayers scored inside on the next possession to take the lead back and started a 12-2 Dragon run for a 44-35 lead on an Okon bucket with 15:56 to play in the second half.

The physical game got tight in the final 5 minutes. A Harmon tip-in pulled the Cougars within two points at 58-56 with 4:40 to go and tied the game at 60-all with 3:24 to play on a DeSean Munson layup.

Okon became Hutch's go-to player after that. Okon scored on a drive to the hoop with 2:33 to play. Then with Hutch leading 62-61, Okon scored again inside for a 64-61 lead with 1:54 to play. Barton cut the lead to two, but Mayers had the answer with an inside hoop from an Okon assist for a 68-64 Dragon lead with 58 seconds left.

Hutchinson then hit six free throws – four by Baker, two by Mayers – in the final 24 second to secure the win.

The Blue Dragons had Saturday's game at Colby postponed. Hutch travels to Dodge City on Monday for a key Jayhawk West battle.

Hutch Blue Dragons grind out victory over Barton

The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team saw its seven-game overall winning streak and a 26-game home-court win streak come to an end Wednesday night.

Already shorthanded with starting point guard&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/alford_tor-e_j660">Tor'e Alford</a>&nbsp;not in the lineup, the Blue Dragons struggled offensively and dropped a 63-49 Jayhawk West decision to Barton at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons fall to 10-3 overall and are now tied for first place in the Jayhawk West with Barton at 8-3. Seward County joins the log jam atop the league at 8-3 as well. Barton is 11-3 overall.

Without Alford, the Blue Dragons had a season-low offensive output and season-low field-goal percentage (31.1 percent). The Dragons were also stung by 14 turnovers.

Hutchinson led 10-4 with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter, but the offense went through an extended dry spell, going 3 minutes, 27 seconds without a point. Barton scored the final nine points of the first quarter to take a 13-10 lead after 10 minutes.

Barton's Queen Ulabo nailed a 3-pointer to start the second quarter for a five-point Cougar lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/grassity_yana_fdqu">Yana Grassity</a>&nbsp;scored on a drive to the hoop to snap Barton's 12-point unanswered run, but from that point, the game slowly got away from Hutchinson.

Barton's Gabby Flute Player hit a 3-pointer with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter to give Barton a 27-16 lead. Barton outscored Hutchinson 24-14 in the second quarter. The Dragons shot 31.1 percent in the first half and trailed 37-24 at halftime.

The Dragons never got the game back to single figures in the second half.

Freshman K.K. Adams led the Blue Dragons with 13 points and five rebounds. Adams was 5 of 13 from the field and 2 of 5 from 3-point range.

Barton's top three scorers for the season all reached double figures on Wednesday. Queen Ulabo had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cougars. Vanessa Oduah finished with 16 points, scoring 12 in the first half. Tiffany Dortland had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.

Barton shot 21 of 56 (37.5 percent), making 6 of 15 from 3-point range.

The Blue Dragons will travel to Colby on Saturday for a 2 p.m. conference contest with the Trojans.

Blue Dragon Women suffer tough loss to Barton

Ruth M. Yutzy, 92, went to be with her Heavenly Father on March 2, 2021, at Mennonite Friendship Communities, South Hutchinson, Kansas. Ruth Marilyn Roupp was born March 18, 1928, to John and Lillie (Balmer) Roupp in Newton, Kansas. She was the middle of five children. Ruth grew up and spent her childhood in rural Hesston and attended the Hesston Academy. After college she taught school in a rural schoolhouse, Shady Side, outside of Newton for three years.

On August 10, 1950, Ruth married Paul A. Yutzy in rural Hesston, a day so hot the candles melted before they were lit. She and Paul lived in Yoder a short time and later moved to the farm where he was raised southwest of Hutchinson. She was a homemaker for the first 20 years of their marriage, being active in church work, the school and neighborhood, always willing to provide a home-cooked meal or fruit basket for friends or those in need. In October of 1970, the family moved to Hutchinson. About that time, Ruth went to work outside the home for the first time since they were married. She spent many years in food service, first at Mennonite Manor and later for USD 308. Her last 24 years of service were as Director of Junior Volunteers/Volunteens at Hutchinson Hospital, a job she truly loved. For years after teens moved out of the program, many would intentionally keep in touch with her, popping into the office and sending notes or coming up to talk to her when they saw her out in public. She estimated that she had worked with more than 370 Volunteens over the years.

Ruth was a woman of deep faith, living it out in her day-to-day life. She was a faithful member of Journey Mennonite Church for 70 years, where she actively served in numerous capacities throughout the years.

Ruth’s family was very important to her. She would often ask about the great-grandchildren’s progress and loved being hugged and kissed by them. Her prayers covered her entire family each day.

Music was always an important part of Ruth’s life. In her early years she sang in a quartet with good friends and occasionally revived the music with them and others later. She loved to play the piano, sang in an octet with Paul and enjoyed attending her family members’ programs and concerts.

Ruth and Paul enjoyed traveling and were fortunate to spend time traveling to numerous places inside and outside the United States, including the Panama Canal, Europe, Alaska, and Costa Rica for their grandson’s wedding.

After Ruth and Paul moved to Mennonite Friendship Communities in August 2008, she was able to enjoy the benefits of a smaller home with less housekeeping, allowing more time to do the things she enjoyed. Even there, she was involved in the residents’ council and enjoyed her “neighborhood,” keeping up with those in her community.

She was preceded in death by her husband on December 29, 2011, and a daughter, Ronda Kay, was stillborn on March 9, 1960. Her parents and older brothers, Willard and Milford, and her younger sister, Elda Guhr, also preceded her in death. She is survived by daughters, Sondra (Bill) Popp and Rita (Bill) Eldridge, all of Hutchinson; grandchildren Cameron Popp (Andrea Cordero), Falls Church, VA; Megan (Dustin) Miller; Cassi (David) Johnston, all of Hutchinson; and Kyle Eldridge, McPherson; great-grandchildren Noah and Miriam Popp; Brody and Whitney Miller; Adelynn, Ava and Oliver Johnston; and brother Delbert (JoAnn) Roupp of Colorado.

She loved to play the piano, sang in an octet with Paul and enjoyed attending her family members’ programs and concerts.Ruth and Paul enjoyed traveling and were fortunate to spend time traveling to numerous places inside and outside the United States, including the Panama Canal, Europe, Alaska, and Costa Rica for their grandson’s wedding.After Ruth and Paul moved to Mennonite Friendship Communities in August 2008, she was able to enjoy the benefits of a smaller home with less housekeeping, allowing more time to do the things she enjoyed. Even there, she was involved in the residents’ council and enjoyed her “neighborhood,” keeping up with those in her community.She was preceded in death by her husband on December 29, 2011, and a daughter, Ronda Kay, was stillborn on March 9, 1960. Her parents and older brothers, Willard and Milford, and her younger sister, Elda Guhr, also preceded her in death. LUBBOCK, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College men's golf team had mixed results in the second of what the Blue Dragons hope to be three appearances at The Rawls Course.

The first appearance in Lubbock was October 19-20 when the Blue Dragons set numerous team scoring records in winning the NJCAA National Preview. The Blue Dragons then had to battle tough scoring conditions this week and on Tuesday finished fifth at the Lubbock Christian University Chap Classic.

The third and most meaningful appearance at The Rawls Course will be in May during the NJCAA Division I Championships.

The Chap Classic was the third spring tournament for the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson had team rounds of 302 and 301 on Monday and closed the 54-hole tournament on Tuesday with the third-lowest team score of 299.

The NJCAA No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons shot 902 for the tournament, 28 strokes off the pace of NJCAA No. 2-ranked Odessa College, which had an 874. Back in October, the Blue Dragons defeated the Wranglers by 49 strokes in the NJCAA National Preview.

Harry Crockett tied for seventh at 6-over 222. The younger Crockett brother posted three straight 74s in the Chap Classsic.

Both&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mgolf/2020-21/bios/crockett_charlie_7tfw">Charlie Crockett</a>&nbsp;and Partridge tied for 10th with 54-hole totals of 223. McCrae tied for 40th at 234 and Alonzo, who was playing for the first time as a member of the five-member group that produced the team scores, tied for 47th at 238.

The Blue Dragons had a pair of individual players in the field of 64 golfers.

The Hutchinson Community College football team was tapped as a preseason co-favorite to win the Jayhawk Conference title, the league's coaches predicted.

The KJCCC Office released its annual preseason coaches' poll on Tuesday. Hutchinson and Garden City are the co-favorites in what many consider a wide-open league.

The Coronavirus pandemic-delays junior college football season is slated to begin on Friday, March 26 at the Blue Dragons play host to the Coffeyville Red Ravens at Gowans Stadium.

With four new head coaches in the league – Hutchinson's Drew Dallas is among that list – and the fact that two transfer seasons have come and gone since Independence was crowned league champion in 2019, leaves many questions as to what exactly each team has this season.

After the Blue Dragons and Broncbusters, the poll says Butler is No. 3, Independence is No. 4 and Coffeyville is No. 5. Dodge City, Fort Scott and Highland round out the final three slots.

Blue Dragons co-favorites in KJCCC Football Coaches Poll

SEDALIA, Missouri – Six different Hutchinson Community College players combined for a Blue Dragon baseball single-game record eight home runs in a slugfest with State Fair Community College on Tuesday.

Hutchinson's power surge was a key factor in rallying from six runs down after 1 1/2 innings for a 20-13 win over the Roadrunners, the first of two meetings this season.

The Blue Dragons even their record at 5-5 heading into the opening of Jayhawk West play on Thursday against Barton at Hobart-Detter Field.

The eight home runs surpassed the previous record of seven, set against Independence on May 7, 2016 in the opening game of the Region VI Tournament opening round series at Hobart-Detter Field.

The 20 runs scored tied for the 10th-most runs score in single-game history. Hutchinson's last 20-run game was a 20-run output against Neosho County on May 12, 2018.

With one on and one out in the fifth, Reetz had his first career multi-home run game, hitting his second-long ball of the day to left and cutting the Dragon deficit to 11-7. The Dragons weren't done in the fourth. Three batters later&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2020-21/bios/steele_jenner_eobj">Jenner Steele</a>&nbsp;hit a three-run shot to center and Hutch trailed 11-10. Sutcliffe went 4 for 6 from the No. 9 hole to lead the Blue Dragons. In addition to his home run, Sutcliffe also had a double.

Steele had career highs of three hit and five RBIs. McLaughlin had three doubles and three runs scored going 3 for 5.

Dragons launch team record 8 homers to sweep State Fair

The heart of the Hutchinson Community College softball order has been potent all season long and Tuesday was no different against the Hesston College Larks.

Hutchinson's No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters –&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/miller_haley_c81y">Haley Miller</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/grimes_madison_qa73">Madison Grimes</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/bevan_natalie_gq93">Natalie Bevan</a>&nbsp;– combined for 11 hits, 15 runs batted in and seven runs scored in the Blue Dragons' doubleheader sweep of the Larks at Fun Valley.

That trio was aided by a solid combined pitching performance by Muquela Gajardo and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/bailey_samarah_si6w">Samarah Bailey</a>&nbsp;in a 5-2 victory in Game 1. The heart of the Dragon order was joined in an offensive onslaught by Carley Sternecker and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/way_alexis_61jv">Alexis Way</a>, who had career highs for highs and RBIs, respectively in a 17-9 run-run of Hesston Game 1.

GAME 1 RECAP The Blue Dragons trailed 1-0 after four innings as Hutchinson stranded five runners on base, four in scoring position, in their first four at-bats.

The big hit finally came in the fifth after a Lark error off the bat of Grimes plated Way with the tying run. Bevan laced a double to center to score two more and came around to complete a four-run inning on an&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/head_easton_e2iz">Easton Head</a>&nbsp;single. The Dragons tacked on an insurance run on a Miller sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 5-2 lead.

Guajardo and Bailey made that stand up in the pitching circle. Guajardo (2-2) pitched a season-high five innings. She allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out three and walking none. Guajardo's three strikeouts tied a season high. Bailey earned her second save of the season with the final two innings. She also struck out three.

The Blue Dragons had seven total hits by seven different players. Bevan's double was the only extra base hit for Hutchinson. Bevan also had the only multi-RBI game. Miller, Grimes and Head all had RBIs.

Hutchinson was also 9 for 9 in stolen base attempts. Way had three steals Grimes and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/williams_lexi_p2uv">Lexi Williams</a>&nbsp;had two each and Miller had one steal.

GAME 2 RECAP The Blue Dragons exploded for 17 hits in Game 2 and scored at least one run each of their five at-bats in the game. That included six-run innings in each of the second and fourth.

Sternecker went a career-best 4 for 4 with two doubles four runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons. Way also drove in a career-high four runs, going 2 for 4.

As for the Dragons' No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters?

Miller had a career-high five RBIs and scored one, going 2 for 3 in Game 2. Grimes was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs. Bevan had two doubles in going 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.

The Blue Dragons led 15-3 entering the fifth inning and the pitching staff had its only reach hiccup of the day after the Larks scored six runs in the top of the fifth to extend the game.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/galliher_jordan_2rxp">Jordan Galliher</a>&nbsp;earned the win in the pitching circle. She went 4-plus innings with four strikeouts, but she allowed five hits, including two home runs and six total runs. Bailey entered and worked just 1-3 inning with three runs allowed before Guajardo pitched the final 2-3 of an inning.

The Blue Dragons are now scheduled to open Jayhawk Conference play on Thursday with a home doubleheader against the Barton Cougars at 2 p.m. at Fun Valley.

Bevan laced a double to center to score two more and came around to complete a four-run inning on an&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/head_easton_e2iz">Easton Head</a>&nbsp;single. The Dragons tacked on an insurance run on a Miller sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 5-2 lead.Guajardo and Bailey made that stand up in the pitching circle. Guajardo (2-2) pitched a season-high five innings. She allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out three and walking none. Guajardo's three strikeouts tied a season high. Bailey earned her second save of the season with the final two innings. She also struck out three.The Blue Dragons had seven total hits by seven different players. Bevan's double was the only extra base hit for Hutchinson. Bevan also had the only multi-RBI game. Miller, Grimes and Head all had RBIs.Hutchinson was also 9 for 9 in stolen base attempts. That included six-run innings in each of the second and fourth.Sternecker went a career-best 4 for 4 with two doubles four runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons. Way also drove in a career-high four runs, going 2 for 4.As for the Dragons' No. 2, 3 and 4 hitters?Miller had a career-high five RBIs and scored one, going 2 for 3 in Game 2. Grimes was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and four RBIs. Bevan had two doubles in going 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs.The Blue Dragons led 15-3 entering the fifth inning and the pitching staff had its only reach hiccup of the day after the Larks scored six runs in the top of the fifth to extend the game.<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2020-21/bios/galliher_jordan_2rxp">Jordan Galliher</a>&nbsp;earned the win in the pitching circle. She went 4-plus innings with four strikeouts, but she allowed five hits, including two home runs and six total runs. Bailey entered and worked just 1-3 inning with three runs allowed before Guajardo pitched the final 2-3 of an inning.The Blue Dragons are now scheduled to open Jayhawk Conference play on Thursday with a home doubleheader against the Barton Cougars at 2 p.m. at Fun Valley.

Heart of order carries Dragons to sweep of Larks

Three Hutchinson Community College volleyball players had double figures in kills and libero&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/reeder_shelby_zpe9">Shelby Reeder</a>&nbsp;led a tremendous back-row effort as the Blue Dragons avenged an opening night loss to Garden City on Tuesday night at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons defeated Garden City 25-8, 23-25, 25-13, 25-16 in a Jayhawk West rematch Tuesday night. The Blue Dragons have now won 10 off 11 matches and stay within striking distance of the top spot in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson is now 16-6 overall and 9-3 in the Jayhawk West. Garden City falls to 8-10 and 4-4.

Hutchinson travels to Colby for a 6:30 p.m. match on Thursday night.

Thorne led the Blue Dragons with a match-high 18 kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/head_kristina_5dlc">Kristina Head</a>&nbsp;had 15 kills and Taegen Larson came off the bench to add 10 kills.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/lettries_myracle_x6su">Myracle Lettries</a>&nbsp;had eight kills and setter&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/price_chloe_rbgs">Chloe Price</a>&nbsp;had seven kills

Defensively, Reeder had her 11th match or 20 or more digs with a career-high 28 against the Busters. Price had 14 digs and Thorne had 10 digs.

Price posted her eighth double-double of the season and Thorne had her 14th double-double of the season. Price had 44 set assists and Thorne had a match-high three aces.

Alli Meng, Raegan Karlin and Touja Durham had seven kills each to lead Garden City.

The Blue Dragons wasted little time in winning the opening set. Back-to-back Lettries kills gave Hutch an early 8-1 lead. Then at 9-4, a Larsen kill started a 13-point Thorne service run. Four different Dragons had kills in the run. Larsen also ended the run with a kill and Hutchinson led 22-4. The Dragons tallied a season single-set high 20 kills in the opening set in a 25-8 victory.

The second set played out much differently than the first. Hutch held the early upper-hand, but a Dragon service error and Durham ace gave the Busters a 14-12 lead. Garden City led 17-14 before the Dragons reeled off four straight to take an 18-17 lead on a Larsen kill. Trailing 21-19, Head produced two kills and a solo block on three-consecutive rallies for a 22-21 Dragon lead. Down one, Thorne had a back-row kill to tie the set at 23, but the Blue Dragons had attack errors on the final two points of the set and Garden City knotted the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win.

Hutchinson quickly regained its strong offensive play from the first set by building leads of 6-2, 11-3, 14-4 and 16-5 in the third set. Throne and Head had four kills each. A Thorne kill boosted the Hutch advantage to 21-9. Head finished the set with a kill for a 25-13 win. The Dragons have 15 kills to Garden City's five in the third set.

The fourth set had the same start to the second as Garden City game to live and led 9-3. But unlike the second set, the Blue Dragons were able to turn the tables on the Busters. Blue Dragon Volleyball avenge early season loss to Busters

Kyoung Sook Alonzo, 78, died March 4, 2021, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; She was born December 29, 1942, in North Korea, to Taek Hwan and Soon Duk (Choi) Chun.&nbsp;

Kyoung graduated from high school in Korea, and received her bachelor’s degree.&nbsp; After moving to Hutchinson, she worked as the Customer Service Manager for Hastings for over 25 years, starting out when Hastings was located at the Hutchinson Mall.&nbsp; Kyoung then transitioned to the new Hastings building, formerly on 30th&nbsp;Street.&nbsp; Known for her exemplary customer service, grace, and smile, Kyoung truly loved all her customers and co-workers, gaining friendships that have lasted through the years. In addition, she helped her husband, Mike, with their family business, Alonzo’s General Service.

Kyoung was an accomplished artist, enjoyed playing the bass, and listening to various types of music.&nbsp; &nbsp;She LOVED her KU Jayhawks, and for many years, would attend every football game (to watch her grandson play in the band).&nbsp; Kyoung’s love for the KU Jayhawks was second though, to her love for her grandchildren.&nbsp; Kyoung’s grandchildren were the center of her universe, and she strived to attend every activity they were involved in, even attending their college events. No distance was too long to travel for Kyoung to proudly support her grandchildren. &nbsp;She was an active member of The Cornerstone Baptist Church, Hutchinson.

On January 19, 1966, she married Michael “Mike” Alonzo, in Seoul, Korea.&nbsp; Mike and Kyoung met while he was serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam conflict.&nbsp; They shared 53 years of marriage before his death on February 22, 2019.

Kyoung is survived by: daughter, Jacqueline Suiter and husband Dale of Divide, CO; grandchildren, Benjamin Appel of Lawrence, Samantha Appel of Hutchinson, Brennan Stewart of Kansas City, MO, Meghan Stewart of Wichita, Mitchell Stewart and Michael Stewart, both of Hutchinson; sisters, Jeong Sook of Korea and Un Mi of Florida; brothers, Heung Jai of Houston, TX and Il Jai of Korea; Benjamin and Samantha’s father, Micheal Appel of Hutchinson; and her faithful beloved companions, Peanut and Sami.

She was preceded in death by:&nbsp; her parents; daughter, Eufemia Steierl; and brother, Hoon Jai.

Funeral service will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Larry Wedel officiating.&nbsp; Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2021, and Friday, March 19, 2021, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp; Cremation will follow the funeral service.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.&nbsp;

Just when the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team's Sophomore Recognition Night was starting to looking like a grind, freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/head_kristina_5dlc">Kristina Head</a>&nbsp;honored the five Blue Dragon sophomores by carrying them to a Jayhawk West sweep on Monday night at the Sports Arena.

With Hutchinson up a set, but trailing Independence 15-13 in the second, Head took over the match and led the Dragons to a 25-10, 25-17, 25-13 victory.

Hutchinson improves to 15-6 overall and 8-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons turn right around and play Garden City at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in a make-up match at the Sports Arena. Independence falls to 0-14, 0-11.

The second set was much different as the Pirates put together a 6-2 run to lead 12-11 and had a 15-13 lead after back-to-back Bianca Brierre solo blocks. That's when Head took over the match. She had three kills and a service ace as Hutch answered the Pirate challenge with a 12-2 run to win the second set.

From the point that Hutchinson trailed 15-13 in the second set, the Blue Dragons scored 37 of the match's final 52 points. Head was the catalyst with eight kills, three block assists and three service aces over that span of points.

Head finished the match with eight kills, four block assists and a career single-match high of six service aces to lead the Dragon offense.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/briggs_shadee_xm04">Shadee Briggs</a>&nbsp;shook off a slow start and also finished with eight kills. Thorne finished with seven and Taegan Larsen had five kills.

The Dragons had 36 kills to Indy's 20. The Pirates also hit a minus .018 for the match with 20 kills and 21 attack errors.

Price had 28 assists and eight digs running the Blue Dragon offense. Price also had eight digs. Libero&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/reeder_shelby_zpe9">Shelby Reeder</a>&nbsp;had a match-high 14 digs.

Brierre had seven kills and Amelia Maulsby had six kills for the Pirates.

Head also played a big part in Hutch's first-set win, doing some from the service line. With the Blue Dragons leading only 11-8, Thorne had a kill, and the Head reeled off three-straight aces to force a Pirate timeout with Hutch leading 15-8. Briggs added a back-row kill and the Pirates had 1 of 8 attack errors to complete 6-0 Hutch run for a 17-8 lead. Larsen had four kills and Thorne had three in the first set as Hutchinson outscored Independence 14-2 to win the first set.

Hutch led the second set 11-8 when the Pirates scored four in a row to lead 12-11 on a Brierre kill. Her back-to-back blocks gave the Pirates a 15-13 lead. After a Pirate service error, Briggs dropped one of Hutch's 10 service aces, Head had back-to-back kills and Price dropped a setter dump for an 18-15 Dragon lead and force an Indy timeout. Head terminated on a Pirate overpass for a 19-15 lead and her fourth ace gave the Dragons 21-16 lead. The Dragons scored 12 of the final 14 points to claim the set 25-17.

Head had two kills, a block assist and ace in the Dragon's initial 8-1 surge to start the third set. The Dragons continued to stretch the lead from there. A Briggs' kill made it 12-3. Reeder served one of Hutch's four aces for a 15-5 lead. Another Briggs' kill made it 19-7. The aces by Head and later by&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2020-21/bios/nelson_kersti_b4a9">Kersti Nelson</a>&nbsp;made it 24-10. Indy scored the next three points, but ended the match on a service error. Head and Briggs had four kills each in the third set.

LIBERAL –&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2020-21/bios/suttington_ishante_gbs8">Ishante Suttington</a>&nbsp;sank a tie-breaking free throw with 0.7 seconds remaining in the game to give the No. 16-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk West Monday night.

Suttington's free throw capped a big game for her and a come-from-behind Jayhawk West road win for Hutchinson at the Green House. Trailing by as many as eight points in the fourth quarter, the Blue Dragons rallied for a 73-72 victory over the Saints.

Hutchinson won its seventh-straight game and improved to 11-2 overall and 10-2 in the Jayhawk West. The Dragons lead Seward County and Barton, the Dragons' opponent on Wednesday, by one game each in the loss column. The Saints fell to 7-3 overall and in league play.

Tied at 72 with 10 seconds to play, Suttington made a hard drive to the basket to draw a foul at the buzzer. The officials put 0.7 second back on the clock. Suttington made the first free throw and missed the second on purpose, not allowing the Saints a final opportunity at a game-winning shot attempt.

Suttington finished with 14 points and tied a season high with seven rebounds. This was Suttington's second go-ahead score in the final minute of a Blue Dragon win this season. Suttington scored with 36 seconds left at Northwest Tech on Feb. 24 in a 69-63 win over the Mavericks.

The Blue Dragons survived a season-high 29 turnovers and 10 Seward County 3-point goals, as well as a huge performance of Saints' forward Sierra Morrow, who scored 39 points. That mark tied Butler County's Betty Lennox for the second-most points scored by an individual Blue Dragon opponent in team history. Lennox scored 39 against the Dragons on February 28, 1996.

Hutchinson led 42-31 with 6:20 to play in the third quarter. Morrow sparked a Saints' comeback by scoring 29 points in the final 16:20 of the second half. Morrow was 10 of 17 shooting, knocking down 4 of 8 from 3-point range and 15 of 16 from the free-throw line.

The fourth quarter was a wild one for both teams on Monday night.

Hutchinson led 51-45 heading into the fourth quarter. Alford started the Dragon comeback with field goals on three-straight possessions, the third pulled the Dragons within 61-59 with 5:12 remaining. Suttington gave the Dragons a 64-63 lead on a three-point play with 4:21 remaining.

The Blue Dragons led 72-67 after two Alford free throws with 49 seconds left. Seward tied the game with a Sanaa Smith 3-pointer with 45 seconds left and a Sierra Lynch field goal with 10 seconds remaining, which set up Suttington's heroics.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department has sworn in six new Police Service Aids (PSA) that are trained up and ready to help serve the community. Yaniralis Rosario, Riley Kotschegarow, Lane Bullock, Janson Robeson, Ashley Garcia, and Brec Voges.

Police service aids are part time employees, with no law enforcement powers, who assist our officers, dispatchers, and records techs in job functions. &nbsp; PSA frees up officers on jobs where a law enforcement officer is not needed to do the job. This&nbsp; allows officers to focus on the reduction of crime in our city.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

All of the new PSA’s are local college students working on their criminal justice degree.

HPD with six new Police Service Aids

GARDEN CITY – It was a tale of two halves for the Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team on Saturday in Garden City.

The Broncbusters bombed away in the first half for six 3-pointers and built a five-point lead at halftime. The Blue Dragons turned things around in the second half and outscored the Busters by 23 points in the final 20 minutes to capture an 88-70 Jayhawk West road victory at Conestoga Arena.

The Blue Dragons won their fifth-game in a row and improved to 10-3 overall and maintained sole possession of first place in the Jayhawk West at 9-3. The Busters had a three-game win streak snapped and fell to 7-5 overall and 6-5 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons return to the Sports Arena on Wednesday for a battle with the Barton Cougars.

The Dragons led 23-18 with 9:17 left in the first half after a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/robinson_chris_q1cl">Chris Robinson</a>&nbsp;3-pointer. The Busters started to find the range from long distances and immediately turned things around, scoring 22 of the game's next 31 points to build a 40-32 lead after a Kahdim Samb 3-pointer with 3:15 to play in the first half.

The Blue Dragons got back within three twice before intermission, but trailed 47-42 and Garden City rattled home 6 of 26 from 3-point range in the first half.

A Jahdukiss Soto layup with 18:49 to go in the second half gave the Busters a 49-43 lead. The Dragons scored 10 of the game's next 12 points and took a 53-51 lead with 16:00 to play on a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/baker_josh_lpkm">Josh Baker</a>&nbsp;3-pointer. That burst was part of what became a game-changing 25-5 run, which was capped by a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/kuath_majok_xrls">Majok Kuath</a>&nbsp;inside hoop for a 66-52 Hutch lead with 11:48 to play. Garden City went scoreless for 4 minutes, 36 seconds.

The Blue Dragons wound up doubling up Garden City in the second half 46-23. Baker scored 14 points in the second half to lead the Blue Dragons to 51.5 percent overall shooting. The Blue Dragon defense held the Busters to 0 of 9 from 3-point range and just 30.4 percent overall shooting (7 of 23) from the floor.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>&nbsp;had his seventh-straight double-double and ninth of the season before halftime and finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Mayers was 9 of 13 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.

Baker finished with 16 points for Hutchinson on 5 of 7 shooting with a 3-pointer and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. Robinson and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/bujdoso_isaiah_t7bk">Isaiah Bujdoso</a>&nbsp;had 13 points each.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/gabriel_stephen_ryjf">Stephan Gabriel</a>&nbsp;added nine points and a career-high-tying four assists.

The Blue Dragons finished the game shooting 47.0 percent (31 of 66), going 5 of 18 from 3-point range and 21 of 26 from the free-thrown line. The Dragons had a season-low seven turnovers.

Hutchinson also owned a 47-27 rebounding advantage. Kuath had a season-high 12 rebounds, his fourth game of 12 or more rebounds in his career.

Denver Jones, one of the top scorers in the KJCCC this season, had a team-high 21 points and five assists. No other Garden City layer scored in double figures.

Garden City was held to 36.2 percent shooting for the game (21 of 58). The Busters did shoot 22 of 25 from the free-throw line.
