The Reno County Board of County Commissioners will meet Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse with a packed agenda that highlights public safety, community partnerships, and neighborhood revitalization.

Among the items is a presentation by the Kansas State Fair seeking support for a new Emergency Operations Command Center (ECC) to be located at the corner of Poplar and Main — the site of the old Hutchinson Fire Station. The proposed $4.2 to $4.5 million facility would serve multiple roles, including acting as the primary hub for emergency services during the annual Kansas State Fair, which draws more than 330,000 visitors each year.

Beyond the Fair, the ECC would also provide year-round operations for the Kansas Highway Patrol, freeing up space in the Fair Administration Building, and serve as a backup emergency operations site for major regional incidents such as severe weather or mass casualty events. The project also aligns with broader security efforts to harden “soft targets” like the Fairgrounds, which the Department of Homeland Security has identified as vulnerable public venues.

The Fairgrounds has contracted local architect Sarah Sipe of Landmark Architects for the design and is working to secure state, federal, and other funding partners to help offset the total cost.

Also on the agenda Wednesday is an invitation from the Reno County 4-H Ambassadors, encouraging commissioners and the community to attend the upcoming Reno County Fair.

The agenda also includes the inspection and approval for the new Station 2 EMS building.&nbsp; The EMS post is moving to 211 West Second Street.&nbsp; The location is just west of Fifth Street and Adams.&nbsp; One completed, the current location for post two will be remodeled and used by the Reno County Health Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commissioners will also consider approving an interlocal Neighborhood Revitalization Plan (NRP) agreement with Kingman County. The plan would apply to Fire District 1, which spans both counties, and would cover commercial properties only. Qualifying improvements that increase property taxes could result in a refund of the difference between the original and increased tax amount.

The meeting will also include a report from County Administrator Randy Partington with updates on monthly department activities.

INDIANAPOLIS — High school baseball teams across the country will be required to use a double first base beginning with the 2027 season, following a rules change approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The NFHS Baseball Rules Committee proposed the revision during its annual meeting June 8-10 in Indianapolis. It was one of 10 rule changes accepted by the NFHS Board of Directors aimed at improving player safety and game flow.

The new rule, added as Rule 1-2-9, requires a double first base with a white and a contrasting colored portion. The white half must be placed in fair territory, while the colored portion lies in foul territory, divided by the foul line. The two parts must be adjacent with no gap between them.

Additional rules, including Rule 8-2-2a, outline how the double base is to be used. Batter-runners are expected to use the colored half on plays at first base unless a fielder moves into foul territory to receive a throw, in which case the white portion may be used. Batter-runners must return to the white base when leading off or tagging up. The rule also addresses interference and obstruction involving improper use of the double base during collisions.

Other changes include updates to Rule 2-5-1h and Rule 2-16-1h to clarify when a batted ball is fair or foul based on contact with either portion of the base.

The committee also approved a new restriction on defensive meetings under Rule 3-4-6. Teams are allowed one player-to-player meeting per half-inning, defined in Rule 2-10-3 as a discussion involving two or more defensive players. Additional meetings will be denied by umpires.

Uniform rules were also updated. Beginning in 2027, schools may include a name, logo, mascot or nickname on the uniform top or pants under Rule 1-4-4. Additionally, Rule 1-6-3 now prohibits players from wearing any audio or video recording devices during a game.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community Foundation is continuing its focus on housing, community development and leadership as it opens applications for the second Impact Cycle of its 2025 Fund for Reno County grants.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource to meet the evolving needs for the area. Grants are designed to support projects that reflect innovation, collaboration, critical need, or opportunities that leverage local resources to benefit the broader community.

Proposals must align with one of two priority categories:

Applications must come from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that serve Reno County. Individuals or groups without nonprofit status must apply through a qualified fiscal sponsor.

Proposals are due by Aug. 15 and must be submitted online through the Foundation’s Grant Lifecycle Management system, available at hutchcf.org/nonprofitsandgrants/available-grants. The grant program is part of the Foundation’s broader strategy to address key community issues, including housing and blight. One of its signature efforts this year is a leadership cohort focused on housing access for vulnerable populations, a growing concern in Reno County and across rural Kansas. The cohort brings together 17 participants from across sectors to engage in training, collaboration and long-term planning.

“Housing is a complex issue,” said Kari Mailloux, director of strategy. “There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but we believe that bringing diverse voices to the table is how real progress begins.”

The Foundation launched its “Love Where You Live” empowerment campaign last year to better understand community needs. Feedback from residents helped shape current funding priorities, including a stronger focus on workforce and economic development.

“We want to help people go from wanting change to taking action,” Mailloux said. “Our grants are one way to help unlock that potential.”

Blake, who manages the Foundation’s grant and scholarship programs, said the grant process is intentionally designed to be accessible.

“We encourage organizations to contact us early,” she said. “We’re happy to walk applicants through the process and help them shape their proposals before they submit.”

The Hutchinson Community Foundation, established in 1989, manages more than 400 funds and serves as a hub for charitable giving in Reno County. It also offers free estate planning consultations through attorney John Griffin of Stewardship Counseling LLC and accepts a variety of charitable gifts, including non-cash assets.

One of the Foundation’s most visible efforts, Match Day, is held every four years to boost endowments for local nonprofits. The next Match Day is scheduled for 2028.

Instead of dressing up and heading out for an evening gala, The Mary Magdalene House is asking supporters to stay home this month — all to help families who feel alone in the fight against mental illness, addiction and trauma.

The faith-based mission in Hutchinson is hosting a “stay-at-home” event on July 15. The concept is simple: families can skip the fancy clothes and the babysitter and spend the night together — all while making a donation to the nonprofit’s work.

“We know how valuable family time is, especially for families who are already facing challenges,” said Annette Van Bruggen, co-founder of The Mary Magdalene House. “So instead of asking people to come out for one more thing, we’re telling them: don’t leave your couch.”

Anyone who donates $50 or more by Aug. 1 will be entered into a drawing for six months of free jam from the ministry’s unique “jam ministry” — a nod to the group’s tradition of gathering people in the kitchen to talk and heal while stirring up homemade preserves.

The Mary Magdalene House provides free connection groups and pastoral counseling for families impacted by mental illness, addiction recovery, foster care and grief. Its programs are largely funded through donations and community support.

Van Bruggen said the stay-at-home fundraiser is one more way the organization lives out its mission.

“Sometimes the best way you can support a family is to remind them to just be together,” she said.

20 students from Buhler High School and four from Lyons High School received the distinction, which recognizes excellence in agricultural education, leadership, and career readiness. Students completed a rigorous program that includes classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience (SAE), and active participation in FFA. A minimum 2.5 GPA across all coursework is also required.

Buhler's honorees include Eliza Aldrich, Cassidy Banning, Ethan Barrett, Aivlynn Ehmke, Gage Elliott, Kyler Gillespie, Will Hanen, Brayden Henry, Payton Huffman, Brayden Leiker, Rachael Mourn, Madelyn Poepperling, Maecy Rosenberger, Ella Sanborn, Logan Schmidt, Scott Schweizer, Juliette Shank, Logan Snyder, Talon Sullivant and Jake Winters.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — BFO Bids, the fast-growing online auction company founded by Justin and Lauren Bright, has officially opened its new home at 2 North Main Street in downtown Hutchinson. The move marks a major expansion for the local business and sets the stage for the launch of a new companion retail platform, BFO2GO.

The new facility opened July 1 and offers significantly more space for inventory processing, customer pickups and daily operations. The 2 North Main location will serve as the central hub for both BFOBIDS.com, its established online auction marketplace, and the soon-to-launch BFO2GO retail store, which will feature online shopping with same-day pickup and nationwide shipping.

“This move is a huge milestone for us,” Justin Bright said. “We’ve outgrown every space we’ve had faster than expected, and this new building finally gives us the room to grow, not just in what we do now, but in what we’re building toward.”

BFO Bids began in early 2023 out of a small warehouse in Buhler, Kansas. Since then, it has grown rapidly, operating out of the Hutchinson Mall and later 405 North Main before relocating downtown. Along the way, the Brights have developed a hybrid business model that combines online auctions with in-person pickup and community partnerships.

“BFOBIDS.com will always be the foundation of what we do,” Bright said. “We’ve expanded it to include liquidation from major retailers like Amazon and Target, estate sales, business inventory reduction, vehicles, large equipment, even charity fundraisers.”

With the upcoming launch of BFO2GO, the Brights are expanding into online retail with a model designed for convenience and value.

“Think of it like Walmart.com, but with a BFO twist,” Bright said. “You’ll be able to shop online for brand-new products, have them shipped anywhere in the U.S., or pick them up the same day right here in Hutch.”

The 2 North Main building will also undergo aesthetic upgrades, including new signage and interior improvements. Despite some construction still underway, the facility is already open for customer pickups and operational needs.

“There just aren’t many large, affordable commercial buildings in Hutchinson that aren’t tied up in corporate leases,” Bright said. “When this location became available, we knew it was the right fit. It allows us to bring our auction and retail operations together under one roof.”

In addition to selling its own inventory, BFO also partners with independent vendors, offering them a platform to reach a broader customer base without the costs of maintaining a physical storefront. BFO handles customer service and pickup logistics on their behalf.

“This gives small businesses a chance to start selling online without needing loans or huge upfront costs,” Bright said. “It’s the kind of thing I wish had existed when we started. Now we’re able to offer that opportunity to others.”

Bright credited the company’s rapid growth to community support, especially from the Buhler area, where he and Lauren still live.

“We wouldn’t be here without the early support we got in Buhler,” he said. “People jumped in from day one, and that gave us the boost we needed to get started.”

BFO Bids opens expanded downtown Hutchinson location

When Abby Linton stands on the podium, baton in hand, she’s not just leading a new generation of performers — she’s carrying forward a legacy that stretches back more than four decades.&nbsp;

Linton, from Maize,&nbsp;grew up surrounded by the thunder and brass of drum corps life. Her father, Pat James, marched with the Geneseo Knights in the 1980s — a highlight of his youth and something he spoke about with reverence. For Linton, who spent her childhood at drum corps shows, the dream of marching always lingered just out of reach.&nbsp;

“I always played a woodwind instrument, so I couldn’t really march in a traditional corps,” he said. “But when my dad was recruited to help start the Sky Ryders back up about a year ago, I was always watching from the sidelines.”&nbsp;

Then, last December, when her father passed away — and any doubts about whether he’d take up the mantle vanished.&nbsp;

“After he passed, I knew I had to be part of this,” Linton said. “It was a way to honor his dream and the love he had for the activity.”&nbsp;

Now, as drum major of the newly revived Sky Ryders — a corps returning after nearly 30 years away — she&nbsp;has discovered that leading from the front is more than just calling tempo changes.&nbsp;

“Being a drum major is a lot more than just waving my hands on a podium,” she said. “I help set the culture. It’s my job to make sure everyone feels welcome, respected, and ready to give it their all. We’re building something brand new here, so how we treat each other really matters.”&nbsp;

And the Sky Ryders are attracting young performers ready to carry the dream forward.&nbsp;

Fourteen-year-old Desiree Keel is the youngest member on the field this season — and almost didn’t make the cut.&nbsp;

Keel says it was her band teacher who first told her about the Sky Ryders — and the story stuck.&nbsp;

“My band teacher marched here, and he told me about it,” she said. “I thought this would take me to the next level in band.”&nbsp;

Keel was just 13 when she attended her audition camp, but she made the age limit by the skin of her teeth — turning 14 just in time. Now she’s two weeks into the season and learning that the drum corps is an entirely different world.&nbsp;

“It’s a lot of work,” she said, “but it’s so much fun too. It’s really worth it.”&nbsp;

Fifteen-year-old Aiden Brinkley, from Nickerson High School agrees. He heard about the Sky Ryders from his dad, a middle school band director.&nbsp;

“At high school, we practice for maybe an hour,” he said. “Here, it’s four-hour blocks — back-to-back, every day. But it’s fun, and I’m learning so much.”&nbsp;

For 16-year-old Liam Ford, who traveled from Dallas to join, the drive is rooted in family too. His dad briefly marched in the drum corps in 1989 and has always been his biggest fan.&nbsp;

“My passion for music really came from him,” Liam said. “I’ve followed DCI for years, so when I heard they were bringing this back, I knew I wanted to do it.”&nbsp;

Unlike the big touring corps, Sky Ryders’ SoundSport program has created a home for high school-age performers to dip their toes into the art form early — and maybe dream bigger for the future.&nbsp;

“This is a great early experience,” Liam said. “I definitely want to keep doing this. It’s like a first step.”&nbsp;

For drum major Linton, every step — every note, every count — is a tribute to the man who first showed him the magic of a corps under the lights.&nbsp;

'Keeping the beat alive’: Young musicians bring Sky Ryders back to life

After buying way more snacks than we needed, we found our seats just in time for the National Anthem. I reminded him to remove his hat and place it over his heart.

As the anthem ended and the crowd cheered, he turned to me and asked, “Why do we say that?”

As a parent, you get flooded with questions. But this was one I was excited to answer. Who wouldn’t want to share a story of our founders’ grit, resilience, and the struggle for freedom?

I leaned toward him and asked, “Do you know the story of Francis Scott Key, Fort McHenry, and the War of 1812?”

I explained that in 1812, even though America had won its independence 29 years earlier, the British were still being bullies. They were back—and angry. After burning down Washington, D.C., the British turned their sights to attack every major port in America starting with Baltimore. The only thing standing in their way was a coastal stronghold called Fort McHenry.

By this point, my son’s gaze had wandered to the man selling cotton candy. I knew I was losing him. But, like the defenders at Fort McHenry, I wasn’t about to give up.

I told him about an American doctor named William Beanes, who had been captured by the British. A lawyer and poet named Francis Scott Key set sail on a daring mission to rescue him.

I explained that Key took a boat to meet with a British admiral to negotiate Beanes’ release. The admiral agreed, but with one condition: he believed Key knew too much about the British plans to seize Baltimore, so he refused to release him until after the British navy destroyed it.

I knew my son felt I was rambling, but I knew he needed to understand that Fort McHenry had a massive rampart, or wall, around it. A little over one thousand defenders sat ready to protect it and Baltimore. Behind the ramparts flew an enormous American flag, flying high enough so the British would see it.

Of course, this was no concern for the British—they had the greatest navy in the world!

As twilight’s last gleaming fell, over 5,000 British soldiers and a fleet of 19 ships unleashed an attack on Fort McHenry. For 25 hours, in the rain and fog, the British laid siege to the fort, firing 1,500 to 1,800 cannonballs.

I felt that if my son understood this was one of the longest bombardments in North American history, with the fate of the city—and perhaps the nation—at stake, I might finally be more interesting than the fry guy.

I continued, explaining that on that dark and stormy night, the only thing Key could see was the bombs bursting in air. The only glimpse of the fort’s ramparts came through the rockets’ red glare.

And all Key could think about was the British admiral’s words—if the flag had fallen through the night, so would the fort, the city, and the nation.

By dawn’s early light, the guns grew silent. Key had no idea what had happened through the perilous fight. He needed proof of what happened through the night. So, he aimed his spyglass at the ramparts.

As the sun finally broke through the clouds above the ramparts—there it stood—the flag was still there!

Torn, tattered, and damaged, yet it waved. Key could see the broad stripes and bright stars gallantly streaming. That star-spangled banner yet waved!

“And the British left! Key and Beanes were released!” I exclaimed to my son. “And that is why we sing the National Anthem. It’s a symbol of resilience. We fight for and are the land of the free!”

Lost in the story, I finally looked down. Expecting a look of pride, maybe even goosebumps. Instead, I saw a look of confusion.

“Dad, I know that! I was asking why we say ‘Chiefs’ instead of ‘Brave’ at the end.”

“Oh…” I blinked. “Because we’re the best—obviously.”

It’s Fourth of July season!&nbsp; Time for barbecues and Chinese-made fireworks (watch out for those tariffs).&nbsp; For Independence Day, I suggest also celebrating some folks that really make America great—immigrants.

Throughout our history, waves of immigrants have made our country stronger, bringing in new Americans willing to risk everything to live the American dream.&nbsp; Immigrants believe the inscription at the base of the Statue of Liberty, “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.” They work hard, raise families, and establish communities and businesses. Naturalized citizens take a citizenship test and an oath in which they swear off allegiance to any other government or leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today, politicians and pundits spew outrage at the suggestion that the U.S. was founded on slavery and the removal of Native Americans.&nbsp; It’s a plain fact that these things happened.&nbsp; Yet they do not need to define us.&nbsp; Himself the grandson of Irish migrants, President Kennedy offered a far more inspiring vision in his 1958 book,&nbsp;A Nation of Immigrants,&nbsp;which celebrated the American story. President Reagan was pro immigration too.

America is so much more than our sins of the past–and present.&nbsp; We are a dynamic, vibrant country that has repeatedly reinvented ourselves.&nbsp; Today, studies show that immigrants contribute far more to the U.S. economy than they take out– and yes, that is after accounting for public welfare benefits.&nbsp; Immigrants stabilize the population of communities that would otherwise be declining, including many in rural Kansas.&nbsp; They take jobs that many native-born Americans will not.&nbsp; Studies show that immigration helps relieve one of America’s worst economic challenges today:&nbsp; the housing shortage. While immigrant families need housing too, the fact that many work in construction more than offsets that, resulting in a net increase in the nation’s housing stock.

Immigrants enrich our culture, while also becoming a part of it.&nbsp; Migrant families typically assimilate within three generations.&nbsp; The children of immigrants from non-English speaking countries are usually bilingual and serve as translators for their parents.&nbsp; The immigrants’ grandchildren typically speak English as their first and perhaps only language.

A few years ago, TLC aired&nbsp;All American Muslim,&nbsp;about a Lebanese American family in suburban Detroit. The show was discontinued, but not because of prejudice. Instead, the family’s daily life was so typical, so suburban, so&nbsp;American, the show simply lacked the drama that reality TV viewers expect. Just another American family, nothing to see here.

If you’re looking to binge watch something patriotic this weekend, I recommend&nbsp;Finding Your Roots&nbsp;with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.&nbsp; Streaming on the PBS app Passport, the show features famous Americans whose ancestors come from all over the world.&nbsp; For most guests, researchers document their family history in the old country as well as their journeys to the United States, uncovering stories of courage, sacrifice, and hard work. &nbsp; Of course, some find scandal in their genealogy too.&nbsp; Many guests are brought to tears when Gates shows them a timeline of their family history.&nbsp; Even when records are unavailable, DNA testing and other research can help uncover more information about their past than they ever imagined possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This Fourth of July, celebrate something that really makes the USA great. Welcome immigrants into your community and learn their American stories—and yours.

 </figure>MICHAEL A SMITH&nbsp; Special to Hutch Post&nbsp;It’s Fourth of July season!&nbsp; Time for barbecues and Chinese-made fireworks (watch out for those tariffs).&nbsp; For Independence Day, I suggest also celebrating some folks that really make America great—immigrants.Throughout our history, waves of immigrants have made our country stronger, bringing in new Americans willing to risk everything to live the American dream.&nbsp; Immigrants believe the inscription at the base of the Statue of Liberty, “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.” They work hard, raise families, and establish communities and businesses. Naturalized citizens take a citizenship test and an oath in which they swear off allegiance to any other government or leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today, politicians and pundits spew outrage at the suggestion that the U.S. was founded on slavery and the removal of Native Americans.&nbsp; It’s a plain fact that these things happened.&nbsp; Yet they do not need to define us.&nbsp; Himself the grandson of Irish migrants, President Kennedy offered a far more inspiring vision in his 1958 book,&nbsp;A Nation of Immigrants,&nbsp;which celebrated the American story. President Reagan was pro immigration too.America is so much more than our sins of the past–and present.&nbsp; We are a dynamic, vibrant country that has repeatedly reinvented ourselves.&nbsp; Today, studies show that immigrants contribute far more to the U.S. economy than they take out– and yes, that is after accounting for public welfare benefits.&nbsp; Immigrants stabilize the population of communities that would otherwise be declining, including many in rural Kansas.&nbsp; They take jobs that many native-born Americans will not.&nbsp; Studies show that immigration helps relieve one of America’s worst economic challenges today:&nbsp; the housing shortage. While immigrant families need housing too, the fact that many work in construction more than offsets that, resulting in a net increase in the nation’s housing stock.Immigrants enrich our culture, while also becoming a part of it.&nbsp; Migrant families typically assimilate within three generations.&nbsp; The children of immigrants from non-English speaking countries are usually bilingual and serve as translators for their parents.&nbsp; The immigrants’ grandchildren typically speak English as their first and perhaps only language.A few years ago, TLC aired&nbsp;All American Muslim,&nbsp;about a Lebanese American family in suburban Detroit. The show was discontinued, but not because of prejudice. Instead, the family’s daily life was so typical, so suburban, so&nbsp;American, the show simply lacked the drama that reality TV viewers expect. For John and Annette Van Bruggen, the idea for The Mary Magdalene House was born out of their own family’s story — and the realization that no one should have to face mental illness, addiction or trauma alone.

Married for nearly 30 years, the couple built their family through adoption and, later, a surprise pregnancy. But as their children grew up, two of them began battling serious mental illness. The experience left Annette, a longtime junior high teacher, searching for support she often didn’t find.

“There were so many lonely places,” Annette said. “I spent a lot of time on my knees asking God for help, and I realized there had to be a place for families to feel less alone.”

That vision became The Mary Magdalene House — a faith-based mission in Hutchinson that provides refuge, counseling, and connection groups for people who feel like society’s “least of these.”

The name draws inspiration from the biblical figure who was the first to see the risen Christ on Easter morning. Mary Magdalene — once tormented by demons — reminds the Van Bruggens that no one is beyond hope or a fresh start.

“She was not okay before Jesus got a hold of her,” Annette said. “Even among Jesus’ closest followers, she was seen as the least. And that’s who we’re here for — the people the world finds easy to ignore.”

The Mary Magdalene House runs pastoral counseling, connection groups for foster and adoptive parents, mental health support groups, grief sessions, and classes for young adults aging out of foster care. Many of these gatherings happen around the kitchen table.

“We believe so many of life’s problems are solved in the kitchen,” Annette said. “When people stir jam together, talk flows easier. That’s why we have our jam ministry — it’s about creating a safe place where people can talk, laugh and cry.”

This summer, the organization is hosting an unusual fundraiser: a “stay-at-home” event on July 15. Instead of a formal dinner or auction, the Van Bruggens are asking supporters to stay home with their families and simply make a donation.

“We don’t want you to get dressed up or hire a babysitter,” Annette said. “Stay home, eat dinner together, watch a movie — and if you donate $50 or more, you’ll be entered to win six months of free jam.”

Proceeds help keep the mission’s connection groups and pastoral counseling free. The nonprofit recently expanded, opening a new chapel that seats 200 and serves as a weekend retreat space to help cover operating costs.

Most of all, Annette says, they want people to know they are not alone.

“We know what it’s like to sit in an office and be judged when your child is struggling. We want to stand in that gap for other families,” she said.

Mary Magdalene House provides refuge, counseling and connection

For the first time in more than 30 years, drum corps is alive and well in Hutchinson — and the Sky Ryders are proving that rebuilding an iconic name starts at the ground level.

The corps has been rehearsing up to 10 hours a day since arriving on June 30 for its two-week training camp, wrapping up with a dress rehearsal on July 7 before hitting the road the next morning. Their short but impactful summer tour will take them to three Drum Corps International (DCI) SoundSport shows in Ankeny and Dubuque, Iowa, and Illinois before returning home on July 12.

It’s the second year the Sky Ryders have fielded a SoundSport ensemble — a division designed for developing groups with flexible instrumentation and performance lengths. It’s a starting point with big dreams attached.

“The goal is to grow this step by step,” said Dale Antoine of the Sky Ryders. “This year is about getting kids on the road, giving them the experience of being a drum corps member, and laying the groundwork for the future. We hope to move into DCI’s Open Class in the next two years — but that depends on funding, logistics, and where the tour goes.”

This summer’s group includes 76 marching members, up from 68 last year. They come from across Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas, ranging in age from 14 to 21. While world-class drum corps tend to average members aged 18 to 19 — and many now won’t accept minors at all — the Sky Ryders see value in cultivating young talent early.

“There are only two kids here who’ve marched drum corps before,” Craig said. “So this really is a building block. We’re mixing kids with all levels of experience — but they’re all learning what it means to be a team.”

SoundSport allows the corps to keep its wind players for now — something that will need to change if they advance to Open Class, where only brass and percussion are permitted with one specialty instrument allowed. But for now, it’s all about accessibility.

“We’re not chasing perfection right now,” Antoine said. “We’re focused on giving the kids a positive experience. Hopefully, they’ll stick with it, grow their skills, and maybe pick up a new instrument if they want to move up.”

Putting a corps on the road isn’t cheap. The group’s operating budget this year is expected to come in around $135,000, a far cry from the $1.5 million a world-class corps might spend — but still a big leap for a program revived just two years ago.

Much of the equipment is borrowed from supportive schools, and community partners like the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the local school district and area band directors have stepped up to help. Marching fees are kept as low as possible — about $750 for each member — compared to upwards of $6,000 for world-class corps. Even so, basic expenses add up quickly, from bus rentals to borrowed tubas.

While the Sky Ryders missed out on hosting a local DCI show this summer — due to changes in the tour model — the goal is to bring one back to Hutchinson next season.

“Drum corps hasn’t had a home here for three decades,” Antoine said. “It takes time to rebuild. We’re trying to grow it organically, keep it affordable, and get more local kids involved. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished already.”

When the buses roll out on July 8, it won’t just be about the scores. For this corps, every mile on the road is another step toward reviving a legacy — one rookie marcher at a time.
