Eldon LaVerne ‘Verne’ Tilton, 89, died June 10th, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 4th, 1932, in Hutchinson, to Alto Harold and Viola Grace (Fox) Tilton.

Verne graduated from Sterling High School in 1950. After high school, he began working at a Chevrolet garage in Sterling. Verne later was a farmer/stockman in southwest Reno County, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hutchinson.

He loved spending time with his family, especially on trips to Estes Park, CO, helping everyone fix their homes and cars, and spending time with his beloved animals.

On July 7, 1957, Verne married Imogene A. Reece. in Laredo, KS. They shared almost 64 years of marriage and two wonderful children.&nbsp;

Verne is survived by his wife, Imogene of Hutchinson; his son, Mark (Beth) Tilton of Hutchinson, his daughter, Sally (Jeff) Thorsell of Douglas, WY; his grandchildren, Kara (Shane) Warren, Brent (Jaime) Tilton, both of Hutchinson; Halee (Dave) Johannsen of Sterling; Eric (Elayna) Thorsell of Casper, WY; Alyson (Braedon) Cook of Douglas, WY; his brother, Harold Tilton of Sterling; and his six great-grandchildren, Creighton Warren, Anslee Johannsen, Jace Tilton, Harper Warren, Brodie Tilton, and Dax Johannsen.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Alto and Viola; his siblings, Jim Tilton and Marie Wegner.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2021, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Dr. Kim Biery officiating. Burial will follow at Laredo cemetery. Friends may call from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for the LaVerne Tilton Memorial Fund (his great-grandchildren's college fund), in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Hutchinson, Kan. – The next to last meeting of the fiscal year was fairly routine for the Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday.

The Board acknowledged the success of its men’s golf and football teams, both of which claimed national championships during the 2020-21 year. In addition, the Board was introduced to its new coaching staff for men’s basketball, head coach Tommy DeSalme and assistant coaches Eric Nitsche and Anthony White.

The Board also conducted several items of business including approving a one-time compensation payment to its benefits-eligible employees and received an update on changes in the Higher Learning Commission accreditation requirements.

The next meeting of the board will be on Thursday, June 24. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Shears Technology Center Justice Theater. The public is invited to attend.&nbsp;

HutchCC Board of Trustees meets coaches, approves one-time payment

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its All-America teams for all levels on Friday and Hutchinson Community College outside hitter Jenna Thorne was named to the second-team for two-year schools.

Thorne was named an NJCAA Division I second-team All-American on April 28 after leading the Blue Dragons to an 18-10 record and a tie for third in the Jayhawk West this season. Thorne was also named both first-team All-Jayhawk West and All-Region VI in the 2020-21 season.

Thorne is the ninth Blue Dragon volleyball player to earn AVCA All-America honors, the first since Aubrey Wilson in 2015. The AVCA combined all three NJCAA Divisions, all California two-year programs and all Northwest two-year teams to compile its All-America teams.

Thorne’s game came to life under first-year Blue Dragon head coach Delice Downing, who moved the 5-foot, 11-inch Karitane, New Zealand product outside for the 2020-21 season.

Thorne averaged 3.76 kills per set, hitting .273 for the season. She ranked sixth in the Jayhawk Conference in kills per set and her 402 total kills – 13th most in Blue Dragon single-season history –&nbsp;&nbsp;were third best in the KJCCC this season.

Thorne was also turned into a six-rotation player, a move that paid huge dividends. She posted 18 double-doubles this season.

The Blue Dragon sophomore outside hitter also averaged 3.08 digs per set, 0.55 blocks per set and 0.37 service aces per set. Her 40 total service aces were fourth most in the Jayhawk West this season. Thorne also accounted for 330 digs and 59 total blocks.

Thorne posted four 20-kill matches this past season, including a career-high 25 kills against No. 6 Seward County on February 28. That performance tied for the seventh most in Hutchinson Volleyball single-match history.

She had a career-high 27 digs against Garden City on March 9. That performance was one of three matches of 20 or more digs. Thorne also had career highs of five service aces against North Platte on January 30 and eight total blocks against Seward County on February 28.

Thorne earns 2nd-Team AVCA All-America Honors

After a season where she broke six Hutchinson Community College softball single-season offensive records, Blue Dragon freshman shortstop Madison Grimes was named to the second team of the 2021 NJCAA Division I Softball All-America team on Friday.

Grimes, a 5-foot-4 freshman from Andale, is the eighth Blue Dragon softball player in team history to earn All-America status and is the first since Holly Kelly in 2016. She is the third NJCAA All-America in head coach Jaime Rose’s tenure.

Named the 2021 Jayhawk East Most Valuable Player and Jayhawk East Freshman of the Year in May, Grimes got off to a sizzling start and never slowed down.

Grimes started her Blue Dragon career with 20 hits in her first 28 at-bats. She parlayed that into a season-opening 14-game hitting streak – that streak tied for the fifth longest in team history – in which she hit .604 over that span (29 for 48).

Grimes finished with a .562 batting average (82 for 146) which led the KJCCC this season and ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA at season’s end.

Grimes had hits in 41 of 46 games played with 28 multi-hit games – including nine three-hit games and two four-hit games. Grimes also put together other consecutive-game hitting streaks of 12 and nine games this season.

The Blue Dragon freshman broke six Hutchinson single-season records in 2021. Including batting average, Grimes also broke single-season marks for runs scored (71), RBIs (78), total bases (142), on-base percentage (.593) and slugging percentage (.973). Grimes’ 82 total hits and 35 stolen bases both ranked second on the Blue Dragon single-season list. Her six triples and 32 extra-base hits (15 doubles, 6 triples, 11 home runs) tied for second on this single-season lists.

Grimes’ 11 home runs tied for sixth in the Hutchinson single-season list.

Grimes posted 24 multi-RBI games, including a season-high five against Fort Scott on February 5.

Grimes led the Blue Dragons to a 29-17 overall record, a second-place finish in the Jayhawk East and a third-place finish in the Region VI Tournament.

The Blue Dragon shortstop is 1 of 7 KJCCC Division I player to earn All-America honors in 2021.

Kan. — The Athletic Department at HutchCC was able to navigate the busiest semester ever thanks to the pandemic and have unprecedented success.

"We didn't know what to expect," said Athletic Director Josh Gooch. "I will tell you, it says a lot about the people we have at Hutchinson Community College. The coaches just stuck to the plan. Our college had a plan as far as the COVID stuff. This is just a result of everybody putting their heads down and working together to make the most of the situation."

HutchCC's football team won a national championship earlier this month and the men's golf squad brought home both the individual and team titles.

"If you really just kind of break it all down, you talk about our faculty, our staff, all the people in housing, athletic training, those are the boots on the ground people that really get me excited about Blue Dragon athletics," Gooch said. "They allow us to be successful day in and day out."

The work now is to figure out how to sustain the success and the community helps with that.

"It's the people that come out and support us," Gooch said. "The amount of people that give of their time to come and cheer on the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson is a unbelievable, special place to be, now more than ever, but we have to give credit to those who have come before us."

Gooch looked back to the work of Randy Stange, Jack Morris, Sam Butterfield and Charles Sesher in building the foundation for Blue Dragon athletics that makes the program second to none at the NJCAA level.

Hutchinson Community College football coach Drew Dallas has been named the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission's Gene Stephenson Coach of the Year, the organization announced on Wednesday.

This past Saturday, Dallas guided his Blue Dragon football team to a 29-27 victory over Snow College to win the 2020-21 NJCAA Football National Championship, the program's first in its 89-year history.

Dallas just completed his first year as Blue Dragon head coach and led Hutchinson to an 8-0 record, a Jayhawk Conference title and the national championship. Hutchinson was tapped No. 1 in the NJCAA preseason rankings and went wire-to-wire, winning by an average margin of 32.3 points per game.

Dallas was also named the NJCAA Football Coach of the Year and Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year.

Dallas will be honored at the 23rd Annual Greater Wichita sports Banquet, presented by the Kamerion Wimbley Foundation on Thursday, July 1 at the Drury Plaza Broadview Hotel. HutchCC Coach Drew Dallas named Wichita Area Sports Commission Coach of the Year

Austin Callahan, the leading hitter of the 2021 Jayhawk West champion Hutchinson Community College baseball team, was named NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention on Wednesday.

Callahan, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound freshman from Fremont, Nebraska, had a huge season and became the sixth NJCAA Baseball All-American in the Ryan Schmidt era, which started in 2013.

Over 54 games of a Covid Pandemic-shortened season, Callahan – primarily a third baseman for the Hutchinson this season – put together a season that produced six Top 10 Blue Dragon single-season statistical finishes.

Most notably, Callahan hammered 21 home runs this season, third most in Hutchinson single-season history (Caden Doga had 31 in 2016 and Zane Schmidt had 22 in 2019). Callahan ranked second in the Jayhawk Conference and tied for seventh in the NJCAA in home runs. His 24 career homers are fifth on the Blue Dragon career list.

For the season, Callahan hit a team-high .422, going 84 for 199 this past season. That included 19 doubles, two triples, 21 home runs, 75 RBIs and 69 runs scored.

His 84 hits and 19 doubles both tied for eighth in Blue Dragon single-season history. He ranked seventh on Hutch’s single-season RBI list.  And his .854 slugging percentage was fifth-best in team single-season history.

Callahan hit safely in 45 of 54 games played. He put together a season-high 15-game hitting streak, which was fifth-longest in team history. Callahan had 26 multi-hit games, including nine of three or more hits in a single game.

The Blue Dragon third baseman had a career-high seven RBIs against Dodge City on May 8. His 10 total bases in that game tied for seventh most in single-game history. Callahan had three four-hit games this season against Coffeyville, Pratt and Allen. He had three two-home run games against Cowley, State Fair and Dodge City.

Callahan named NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will look over several policies during Thursday’s monthly meeting.

The first is the second reading to changes of the academic honesty policy. The changes ease some of the penalties for academic dishonesty giving&nbsp; a student an opportunity to correct any wrongdoing.&nbsp;

The board will also go over policy for acceptable use of the college's technology including computers and cell phones. The board will also have the second reading of the alcohol and drug policy and prevention program.

Also on Thursday, the board will seek approval of one time payments to all faculty staff and administrators. The payment would run from $250 to $1000 depending on how long the employee worked during the school year. President Dr. Carter File says that some workers took furlough during the pandemic and the school itself took a very conservative stance on salaries with so many unknowns on how the school year would progress. The one time payment is a way to make up some of that gap.

Thursday's meeting of the HutchCC Board of Trustees begins at&nbsp; 7 p.m. at the Shears Technology Center on the HutchCC campus.

 </figure>HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will look over several policies during Thursday’s monthly meeting.The first is the second reading to changes of the academic honesty policy. The changes ease some of the penalties for academic dishonesty giving&nbsp; a student an opportunity to correct any wrongdoing.&nbsp;The board will also go over policy for acceptable use of the college's technology including computers and cell phones. The board will also have the second reading of the alcohol and drug policy and prevention program.Also on Thursday, the board will seek approval of one time payments to all faculty staff and administrators. The payment would run from $250 to $1000 depending on how long the employee worked during the school year. President Dr. Carter File says that some workers took furlough during the pandemic and the school itself took a very conservative stance on salaries with so many unknowns on how the school year would progress. Laura Jean Ragsdale, 72, passed away on June 4, 2021 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in Hutchinson, KS.  She was born August 8, 1948, in Pawhuska, OK, the daughter of Jaydee Ragsdale and Lucretia (Boylan) Nichols.

She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1966 and attended Hutchinson Community College.  She worked for Hartmans and Cessna for over 20 years as a forklift operator.  She was a very active member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of the NAACP.  Laura was a loving and caring mother.  She loved her sons more than anything and they were the center of her world.  She was also a loving and caring daughter, sister and aunt.  In Laura’s spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her close friends, family and bingo crew. 

Laura was preceded in death by her father, Jaydee; and a brother, Edward L. Tipton.

She is survived by her mother, Lucretia; two sons, Robert and Jeffrey Ragsdale; two brothers, Roger Coffee and Bruce Nichols, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, on Friday, June 11, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.  Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 12, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 1015 E. 7th, Hutchinson, with Reverend William Green presiding. Blue Dragon men's basketball busy with fall commitments

Kan. — The State Board of Education on Tuesday will consider whether to allow computer science to count as a core math or science credit toward high school graduation.

"People certainly recognize the importance of computers in our lives," said Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards. "Some sense of computers, I think people would argue, would be helpful. Maybe computer science, in some ways as taught, is a lot of application, but may not provide, kind of the foundational math or science skills that you might want, to be ready for general college classes."

Currently in Kansas, high school students must take three units of science and three units of math. The recommendation would allow local boards to substitute one unit of computer science for either one unit of science or math.

"What do students need to be successful?" Tallman asked. "I think everyone agrees, we want kids to be successful, sometimes the debate is what you need. You may think you're only interested in computers. You might get that as a background, but what if you change your mind? Will you have the other skills necessary?"

Kansas is one of only two states that counts computer science as an elective, but not as a core graduation credit. Under the proposal, districts could allow a computer science course to be counted for a math or science credit in situations where the student has covered the three topics of physical, biological and earth and space science, or the two topics of algebraic and geometry concepts.

"Students respond better in school if they see the relevance," Tallman said. "Sometimes, rather theoretical courses may not have that. There's also a movement to say, what can we do to make sure that what we're having kids take is something where they see value and application to their future and they're likely to learn better and learn more if they believe that."

Last month, the State Board received the recommendation for computer science from a group that examined policy in other states, met with math and science consultants and received public comment.

Computer science as core subject to be discussed by state board

Ann Janet “Annie” Davenport Moeder, 73, passed away Monday, May 31, 2021, due to complications with pneumonia. She was born December 30, 1947, in Eugene, OR, to Joseph A. and Viola M. (Van Hoozen) Davenport.&nbsp;

As a child, Annie pretty much grew up on a horse. A passion of hers, she won many 1st place prizes to qualify for state competition in pleasure riding on her favorite horse, Scatty Kitty. Annie took part in many rodeos all throughout her college years at Fort Hays State University. It was there that she also fell in love with and married Leon Joseph Moeder on August 16, 1969.&nbsp; Soon after their marriage, they started their family.

Annie was always an energetic storyteller. Nothing delighted her more than selling you something that just moments before you had no idea you needed so badly. When you walked away happy, Annie was positively tickled. Born with the Davenport gift of gab, she used this gift as a clerk at the family’s Davenport Auction and Realty business.&nbsp; Later, she used her gift of gab as a sales associate, selling large appliances and furniture at Woody’s and Crupper's Corner. &nbsp;Annie also enjoyed swapping stories (some of which were a little naughty) as she raised milk then meat goats.&nbsp; In addition, she started a restaurant in Sylvia called “Wheatberry Kitchen”, and embroidered numerous towels and goods for sale at various central Kansas Farmers' markets.&nbsp;

Annie was well-known as an amazing cook.&nbsp; Family members recall her making 17 gallons of macaroni and cheese at a time (or so it seemed)! &nbsp;Annie also won the Governor’s Breadbasket at the Kansas State Fair more than once for her delicious yeast rolls. She also served several years on the Nickerson/South Hutchinson USD 309 School Board.

Annie was a loving and doting mom to not only her wonderful sons but also their many friends and acquaintances. Wherever Annie was, tears of laughter were soon to follow.&nbsp;

Annie is survived by: sons, Daron Moeder and Toby Moeder; granddaughter, Brailey Moeder; sister, Alice Lewman; two nieces, Abby Trimble and Ginger Lewman;&nbsp; Daron and Toby’s father, Leon J. Moeder;&nbsp; and companion, James O. Yoder.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Joseph A. and Viola M.; brother-in-law, Wayne Lewman; and companions, Clarence Forrester and Gary Kelly.

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Elliott Mortuary, with Pastor Judy Miller officiating.&nbsp; Private family inurnment will follow in Lonestar Cemetery, Pretty Prairie.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary.

Hutchinson Community College freshman golfer Ben Partridge was named NJCAA Division I winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award on Sunday.

The Jack Nicklaus Award is given to the golfer named National Player of the Year in all three NJCAA and NCAA divisions and NAIA. The announcement was made on Sunday during the final round of The Memorial in Dublin, Ohio, a tournament created by the Hall of Fame and multi-major tournament winner Nicklaus.

The 2020-21 season has been extraordinary for Partridge, a freshman from London, England. Back in May, Partridge helped the Blue Dragon men’s golf team win the NJCAA team championship. Then Partridge won a four-hole playoff with teammate Harry Crockett to claim the NJCAA individual national championship.

Partridge is a first-team NJCAA All-American.

Partridge had a season stroke average of 71.2 over 29 rounds played over the combined fall and spring seasons.

Over the final three tournaments in 2021 – the KJCCC Championship, District III/Region VI and the NJCAA Championship – Partridge averaged 70.8 strokes per round with 7 of 10 rounds shot under par.

In addition to winning the NJCAA Individual title, Partridge won the NJCAA National Preview, also at The Rawls Course in Lubbock – site of the 2021 national championships. He was Jayhawk Conference regular-season co-champion with teammate Charlie Crockett.

Partridge had two tournament titles, six Top-3 finishes and placed in the Top 10 in 9 of 10 total tournaments this season.

Partridge is the Blue Dragons’ first National Player of the Year in men’s golf and just the seventh in Blue Dragon athletics history. Partridge joins Eugene Kinlaw (2008 Football), Kadeem Allen (2014 Men’s Basketball), Kyle Simonds (2014 Baseball), Sarah Rothe (2014 Softball), Shakur Juiston (2017 Men’s Basketball) and Michael Helman (2017 Baseball) as Blue Dragon National Player of the Year.

Partridge named Nicklaus National Player of the Year

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Not even seven minutes had elapsed in the national championship game before No. 1 Hutchinson Community College found itself in a 14-0 hole.

The Dragons went three-and-out on their first two possessions while No. 2 Snow College scored two touchdowns in just nine plays.

Deuce Roberson's 8-yard grab capped an 8-play, 52-yard drive to open the scoring for the Badgers.

On Snow's second possession, Tejhuan Palmer caught a Garrison Beach deep ball for six. The 69-yard TD put Snow up 14-0 with 8:17 left in the first quarter of play.

Hutchinson would answer with an 11-play, 66-yard drive that produced only a 22-yard field goal from C.J. Moya. Hutchinson's drive stalled after a first-and-goal chance from the five.

After turning the ball over on downs, Hutchinson took its next drive to the house in only two plays. Tye Edwards broke loose for a 68-yard scamper.

Edwards finished the day with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Edwards was named the game's MVP.

After trailing 14-0 early, Hutchinson went into halftime down only four.

"I know a lot of it was just fighting back and these guys just not giving up and having a little 'come to Jesus' meeting at halftime about just playing Hutch Football," head coach Drew Dallas said after the game.

Named the NJCAA Coach of the Year, Dallas said the coaches didn't have to say anything at halftime. He said the leaders on the team said what needed to be said.

"The only thing you can control is your attitude and your effort and your response to the situation. We were prepared (because of the) adversity we faced the last 16, 17 months," Dallas said.

Snow took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and looked poised to add another touchdown to its 14-10 advantage. Quarterback Garrison Beach burst into the red zone before being tackled from behind by Marquise Gilbert.

Beach was slow to get up as trainers rushed to his side. Beach was helped off the field with a knee injury and never returned. He finished the day with 185 yards passing and two touchdowns. Beach also ran for 42 yards. He ended the day leading the Badgers in both categories.

Beach was replaced by backup Gabe Sweeten, who entered the game with only 7 passing attempts on the season. Sweeten struggled to hit wide receivers and was just 2 of 9 in relief of Beach. Sweeten was sacked twice, threw for 54 yards and one interception.

After Beach left the game, the Badgers could not finish the drive. Despite driving the ball to Hutchinson's one, Snow was pushed backed when Sweeten mishandled a shotgun snap and took a 5-yard loss. That was followed by a false start two plays later. The Badgers came away empty after kicker Stockton Lund missed a 27-yard field goal. Lund came into the contest with two misses on the season. He missed three times in the national championship (49, 31, 27).

Sweeten did hurt the Dragons with his legs. He ran for 30 yards and a TD.

Hutchinson held Snow's leading rusher, Seth Kaelin, to just 37 yards. Kaelin entered the game as one of only six rushers in the nation to average 100 yards per contest.

Snow added to its lead late in the third quarter after a Dylan Laible interception. Laible, who threw for 11 TDs and just one interception after replacing an injured C.J. Ogbonna this year, went 10 of 22 for 150 yards and an interception.

Laible overthrew Tyrone Howell and Kieonte Scott took advantage with a pick. Mekhi Kimble turned the interception into points on an 11-yard TD run. With 4:50 left in the third, Hutchinson was down 21-10.

That's when Drew Dallas made a move. At halftime, he told both of his quarterbacks that a change might be coming. "If we need a little bit of momentum, we're going to make this change and really not for anything other than our offense just (needs) a spark," Dallas told Laible and C.J. Ogbonna during the break.

Ogbonna came in and completed his first pass for 34 yards to Cortez Braham. Two plays later, Anwar Lewis ran 29 yards for a touchdown.

Lewis scored twice Saturday, his second touchdown was from three yards out. The run capped an 89-yard drive that took just six plays.

Two touchdowns from Lewis and one more from Edwards were part of a 19-0 run that put Hutchinson up 29-21 with 7:27 remaining. The Dragons failed to convert twice on two-point conversions during that run.

Ogbonna provided the spark the Blue Dragons needed by completing all five of his passes for 128 yards.

Between Laible and Ogbonna, the Dragons racked up 278 passing yards. Tyrone Howell caught six passes for 108 yards. Braham tallied 112 yards on four receptions.

Snow would not go away without a fight. The Badgers scored with 4:50 left in the game on a Sweeten 6-yard run. The Badgers drove 75 yards in six plays but failed to tie the game when Sweeten couldn't hit Palmer on the two-point try.

With a two-point lead, Hutchinson took 2:37 off the clock before seemingly sealing the victory on a fourth down punt fake. Dylan Kedzior took a direct snap in punt formation and ran for the first down. The play was called back for an illegal formation. Caleb Brickhouse pinned the Badgers inside their own 20 after the penalty.

Without any timeouts, Snow had to throw. Enter: Tre Pinkney. The nation's leader in sacks knew the comeback route was coming from wide receiver Myller Royals. When Royals cut back to his quarterback, Pinkney jumped the passing lane and sealed the victory.

 </figure>By DAREN DUNNHutch PostLITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Not even seven minutes had elapsed in the national championship game before No. 1 Hutchinson Community College found itself in a 14-0 hole.The Dragons went three-and-out on their first two possessions while No. 2 Snow College scored two touchdowns in just nine plays.Deuce Roberson's 8-yard grab capped an 8-play, 52-yard drive to open the scoring for the Badgers.On Snow's second possession, Tejhuan Palmer caught a Garrison Beach deep ball for six. The 69-yard TD put Snow up 14-0 with 8:17 left in the first quarter of play.Hutchinson would answer with an 11-play, 66-yard drive that produced only a 22-yard field goal from C.J. Moya. Hutchinson's drive stalled after a first-and-goal chance from the five.After turning the ball over on downs, Hutchinson took its next drive to the house in only two plays. Tye Edwards broke loose for a 68-yard scamper.Edwards finished the day with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Edwards was named the game's MVP.<figure>

 </figure>After trailing 14-0 early, Hutchinson went into halftime down only four."I know a lot of it was just fighting back and these guys just not giving up and having a little 'come to Jesus' meeting at halftime about just playing Hutch Football," head coach Drew Dallas said after the game.Named the NJCAA Coach of the Year, Dallas said the coaches didn't have to say anything at halftime. He said the leaders on the team said what needed to be said."The only thing you can control is your attitude and your effort and your response to the situation. We were prepared (because of the) adversity we faced the last 16, 17 months," Dallas said.Snow took the opening kickoff of the third quarter and looked poised to add another touchdown to its 14-10 advantage. Quarterback Garrison Beach burst into the red zone before being tackled from behind by Marquise Gilbert.Beach was slow to get up as trainers rushed to his side. Beach was helped off the field with a knee injury and never returned. He finished the day with 185 yards passing and two touchdowns. Beach also ran for 42 yards. He ended the day leading the Badgers in both categories.Beach was replaced by backup Gabe Sweeten, who entered the game with only 7 passing attempts on the season. Sweeten struggled to hit wide receivers and was just 2 of 9 in relief of Beach. Sweeten was sacked twice, threw for 54 yards and one interception.After Beach left the game, the Badgers could not finish the drive. Despite driving the ball to Hutchinson's one, Snow was pushed backed when Sweeten mishandled a shotgun snap and took a 5-yard loss. That was followed by a false start two plays later. The Badgers came away empty after kicker Stockton Lund missed a 27-yard field goal. Lund came into the contest with two misses on the season. He missed three times in the national championship (49, 31, 27).Sweeten did hurt the Dragons with his legs. He ran for 30 yards and a TD.Hutchinson held Snow's leading rusher, Seth Kaelin, to just 37 yards. Kaelin entered the game as one of only six rushers in the nation to average 100 yards per contest.Snow added to its lead late in the third quarter after a Dylan Laible interception. Laible, who threw for 11 TDs and just one interception after replacing an injured C.J. Ogbonna this year, went 10 of 22 for 150 yards and an interception.Laible overthrew Tyrone Howell and Kieonte Scott took advantage with a pick. Mekhi Kimble turned the interception into points on an 11-yard TD run. With 4:50 left in the third, Hutchinson was down 21-10.That's when Drew Dallas made a move. At halftime, he told both of his quarterbacks that a change might be coming. "If we need a little bit of momentum, we're going to make this change and really not for anything other than our offense just (needs) a spark," Dallas told Laible and C.J. Ogbonna during the break.Ogbonna came in and completed his first pass for 34 yards to Cortez Braham. Two plays later, Anwar Lewis ran 29 yards for a touchdown.<figure>

The run capped an 89-yard drive that took just six plays.Two touchdowns from Lewis and one more from Edwards were part of a 19-0 run that put Hutchinson up 29-21 with 7:27 remaining. The Dragons failed to convert twice on two-point conversions during that run.Ogbonna provided the spark the Blue Dragons needed by completing all five of his passes for 128 yards.Between Laible and Ogbonna, the Dragons racked up 278 passing yards. Tyrone Howell caught six passes for 108 yards. Braham tallied 112 yards on four receptions.Snow would not go away without a fight. The Badgers scored with 4:50 left in the game on a Sweeten 6-yard run. The Badgers drove 75 yards in six plays but failed to tie the game when Sweeten couldn't hit Palmer on the two-point try.With a two-point lead, Hutchinson took 2:37 off the clock before seemingly sealing the victory on a fourth down punt fake. Dylan Kedzior took a direct snap in punt formation and ran for the first down. The play was called back for an illegal formation. Caleb Brickhouse pinned the Badgers inside their own 20 after the penalty.Without any timeouts, Snow had to throw. Enter: Tre Pinkney. The nation's leader in sacks knew the comeback route was coming from wide receiver Myller Royals. 🏈 Dragons erase 14-point deficit to win first national title

Karml Jan Blumanhourst, 59, of Azle, Texas, passed away June 3, 2021 at her home. She was born January 30, 1962 in Larned, Kansas, the daughter of Melvin D. and Carol Keenan Thompson. Karml has resided in Azle since May of 2016, formerly of Lyons, Kansas. She attended school in Larned and Mt. Saint Scholastica in Canon City, Colorado. 

Karml completed her nursing degree at Pratt Community College and served as primary care RN at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons from 1987 until 2001, Hutchinson Regional Medical Center from 2002 until 2016, and John Peter Smith Hospital, Ft. Worth, Texas from 2016 until present. Karml will be long remembered for her excellence in nursing care in every position she held. She loved traveling with her husband and her family, venturing all over the United States, Tenerife, Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, Aruba, Hawaii, and throughout the Caribbean. She enjoyed snorkeling, and beach combing, and was always on the lookout for “treasures” to delight her grandchildren. Family and friends will share fond memories of their travel adventures. On July 6, 1993, Karml was united in marriage with Randy Blumanhourst in Central City, Colorado, with their 7 children serving as witnesses. 

He survives of the home. She is also survived by their seven children, Levi and Mandy Blumanhourst and their children, Lane, Bennett, and Miles of South Hutchinson, KS; Christopher and Kristi Hogan and their children, Elijah and Noah of Coffeyville, KS; Hollie and Matt Ankerholz and their children, Landon and Shealeigh of Lyons, KS; Jerrehl and Jeremy Brown and their children, Jocelyn and Jaron of Aurora, CO; Andrew Hogan of Wichita, KS; Daniel Hogan of Hutchinson, KS; Dr. Keenan and Merideth Hogan and their expected baby of Shawnee, KS; three brothers, Dan Thompson and wife Kay of Pawnee Rock, KS, Kim Thompson and wife Joy of Topeka, KS, and Randall Thompson of Arlington, KS; two sisters, Kandi Smith and Doug Ramey of Ft. William’s life began on February 12, 1963 in Miami, Florida. He was the loving son of Enrique Antonio and Alida (Garcia) Cardonnè. William was a 1981 graduate of Bell High School in Bell, California. He also attended the El Camino Community College in Bell, California. 

William was united in marriage to Roxana Patricia Nolasco on August 12, 1994 in Hawthorne, California. To this union were three children, Vanessa, Nathan, and Jared.

William served as a pastor at El Camino Church in McPherson, Kansas until he had a debilitating stroke in 2019. William enjoyed serving the Lord on mission trips, working with children and youth, served as an interpreter for the Rice County Court system and Rice County School District. He also enjoyed his family, traveling, cooking, his KU memorabilia.

His loving family includes his wife, Roxana of the home; three children, Vanessa Pimblott (Jonny) of St. Louis, Missouri, Nathan Cardonnè (Roxanne) of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Jared Cardonnè (Esmee) of St. Louis; a brother, Enrique Cardonnè (Esther) of Cudahay, California; 5 grandchildren, Josue, Judah, Jesse, Yasiel, Lena; 2 nephews, Richard and Andy and 1 niece, Ileene.  

William was preceded in death by his parents. William passed away at the Salem Nursing Home in Hillsboro on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at the age of 58 years old. LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Back in 2019, the Hutchinson Community College football team missed an opportunity to play in the NJCAA Football Championship Game by a grand total of three points.

One season later, the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons get the opportunity to play for that coveted first national title when Hutchinson (7-0) takes on No. 2-ranked Snow College (8-0) in the 2020-21 NJCAA Championship Game presented by Bob McCloskey Insurance.

Kickoff will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Arkansas. This will be the Blue Dragons' first opportunity to play for a national football championship. The Blue Dragons will also be making their 23rd postseason appearance.

The Badgers will play for a national title for the third time. Snow won the national championship in 1985 and lost to Jayhawk Conference rival Butler in double overtime in 2008.

Hutchinson completed its regular season undefeated for the third time in program history (1947, 1969). The Blue Dragons won the seventh KJCCC league title in program history. The Blue Dragons had two wins over ranked teams this season - No. 3 Garden City, 23-7, and No. 7 Independence, 42-24. Coffeyville and Butler were receiving votes.

Snow has one victory over a nationally-ranked opponent. The Badgers defeated then-No. 2 Iowa Western 31-30 in Council Bluffs on opening weekend. Snow is 3-0 vs. the state of Iowa this season with road wins at Ellsworth and Iowa Central.

The 2020-21 NJCAA championship game will feature the top two scoring offenses in the NJCAA this season - Snow is No. 1 at 52.1 points per game, the Blue Dragons are No. 2 at 47.7 points per game. Defensively, the Blue Dragons are No. 3 in the nation in scoring defense at 11.4 points per game. Snow is No. 6 in scoring defense at 13.9 points per game.

Both head coaches in the championship game - Hutchinson's Drew Dallas and Snow's Zak Erekson - are in the first seasons at their respective schools.

Neither team has played since the third week in May. The Dragons clinched a KJCCC title on May 16 with a 70-14 win over Dodge City at Gowans Stadium. Snow closed its season on May 15 with a 77-0 win over Gordon's Fine Arts and Sports Academy.

Hutchinson and Snow College will meet for the first time ever in football.

NOTING THE BLUE DRAGONS + The Blue Dragons have started a season 8-0 only five times - 1947, 1948, 1969, 2010 and 2014.

+ Offensively, the Blue Dragons boast the No. 2 scoring offense, No. 2 rushing offense and No. 5 total offensive team in the NJCAA this season.

+ Defensively, the Dragons rank No. 3 in scoring defense, No. 6 in rush defense and No. 7 in total defense.

+ Despite an injury to starting quarterback C.J. Ogbonna in the second quarter of the Independence game in Week 5, this position has been a pillar of strength in the Dragons. Ogbonna is completing 60.2 percent of his passes for 609 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/laible_dylan_mrze">Dylan Laible</a>&nbsp;jumped right in after Ogbonna's injury. He is completing 59.5 percent for 631 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception.

+ The Blue Dragons have a deep, deep stable of running backs led by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/edwards_tye_vovm">Tye Edwards</a>, who has two 100-yard games this season. Edwards is 11th in the NJCAA at 81.6 yards per game. Game-breaker&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/lewis_anwar_oe0l">Anwar Lewis</a>&nbsp;averages 10.5 yards per carry and 66.3 yards per game. Both Edwards and Lewis have six rushing touchdowns.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/kedzior_dylan_cbc8">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;is averaging 11.2 yards per carry with two scores. Four different backs have at least 200 yards.

+ The receiving corps were a question entering the season. The question was answered.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/henderson_cam_tgg8">Cam Henderson</a>&nbsp;has a team-high 21 receptions for 256 yards and two scores. Tight End&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/thomas_ivan_quha">Ivan Thomas</a>&nbsp;and receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/braham_cortes_6fw6">Cortez Braham</a>&nbsp;have a combined 11 TDs.

+ Return specialist&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/thomas_jalik_0dfw">Jalik Thomas</a>&nbsp;leads the NJCAA in kickoff return average at 31.2 yards per return on eight returns. He has a 100-yard return for a touchdown vs. Butler.

+ Henderson is seventh in the NJCAA in punt returns at 9.4 yards per return on 13 attempts.

+ Linebacker Trey Pinkney leads the nation with 8.5 quarterback sacks and is second in tackles for loss with 13.

+ Kicker&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2020-21/bios/moya_c.j._5x11">C.J. Moya</a>&nbsp;has stepped in to take over the bulk of the place-kicking duties. He is 27 of 27 on extra points and made his only field goal. He has 20 touchbacks on kickoffs.

NOTING THE BADGERS + Snow College plays in its third NJCAA football national title game. Back in 1985, the Badgers defeated NEO 29-14 in the Mid-America Bowl. That team was inducted into the NJCAA Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010. The Badgers were national runner-up in 2008 when they lost to Butler 37-30 in double overtime in the first NJCAA designated title game.

+ The then-No. 10 Badgers knocked off then-No. 2 Iowa Western in Council Bluffs on opening weekend. That's Snow's only win over a ranked opponent, but it's 3-0 in three road trips to Iowa, also defeating Ellsworth and Iowa Central.

+ The Badgers are the No. 1 scoring team in the country at 52.1 points per game.
