Businesses encouraged to take survey

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The unemployment rate in Reno County was higher for the month of February 2024.

According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the jobless rate for the county went up four tenths of a percent to 3.3%. The jobless rate for the same period in 2023 was 3.2%.

There were 953 county residents out of work.&nbsp;

Statewide preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.7% in February. This is an increase from 2.6% in January and a decrease from 2.8% in February 2023.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 3,600 from January. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 3,800 over the month, while government decreased by 200.

“Kansas employers added jobs in February, with total nonfarm job estimates increasing by 3,600,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “The largest gains were in construction and leisure and hospitality. Both of these industries added more than 1,000 jobs.”

Since February 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 13,000. This change is&nbsp;due to an increase of 8,700 private sector jobs and an increase of 4,300 government jobs.

Reno Co. unemployment above 3% in Feb.

NEWTON, Kan. — Newton USD 373 announces the appointment of Chad Nulik as the new Newton High School head principal for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year. With a notable background in education and a commitment to student and staff development, Mr. Nulik brings experience and enthusiasm to his new role.

Mr. Nulik's journey in education spans over two decades, with his initial 18 years at Salina Central High School, where he taught theater and speech, served on the Building Leadership Team, and coached baseball. 

Nulik then came to Newton and Chisholm Middle School in August 2020, where he has served as assistant principal since.

His dedication to education and leadership excellence was recognized statewide when he was named the Kansas Assistant Principal of the Year in fall 2023.

"It has always been one of my ambitions to run a high school and to help students develop into the last phase we have with them," Mr. Nulik says of his upcoming transition.

As he steps into his new role, Mr. Nulik brings with him a philosophy centered on collaboration. He emphasizes his commitment to being actively involved in the school community.

"Our goal is to help our students, but on top of that, if we work to make our teachers feel supported, then they in turn bring that onto the students,” Nulik said.

Nulik will begin his role over the summer, and hopes to have meet-and-greet opportunities for students and families to get to know him ahead of the upcoming year.

New Newton High principal appointed

HUTCHINSON, Kan. —&nbsp;Megan Ratzlaff, daughter of Ric and Susie Ratzlaff of Buhler, Kansas, is one of 459 community college students nationwide who were named semi-finalists in the 2024 Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship competition. She is the only student listed for the state of Kansas who will advance to the finalist round. In addition to this, she is one of 150 community college students nationwide who were named to the 2024 Coca-Cola Academic Team.

Over 1,600 applicants applied this year for the highly competitive Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which can supply up to $55,000 per year for two or three years to help transfer students complete a bachelor’s degree at any accredited four-year undergraduate institution in the U.S. This scholarship aims to help students who have demonstrated exceptional academic ability, leadership, and service transfer to top four-year universities and avoid student debt. Finalists for the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship will be announced in May.

The Coca-Cola Academic Team Scholarship, for which over 2,200 students applied this year, is administered by Phi Theta Kappa, an international honors organization for two-year colleges. The academic team application is open to non-members in addition to members of Phi Theta Kappa with applicants having been nominated by their college’s designated nominator and having demonstrated outstanding academic achievement as well as significant campus and/or community leadership and service. Each of the 50 winners of the bronze-level designation will receive a $1000 scholarship and will be presented with a medallion at their respective All-State Academic Team ceremonies.

Megan is a sophomore studying Political Science and History. She currently holds leadership positions in Phi Theta Kappa, the Honors Program, and Campus Crusade for Christ as well as plays in the Symphonic Band at HutchCC. Outside of school, Megan works part-time at RCB Bank and serves the Lord with her church family at Medora Community Bible Church. She plans to transfer to Sterling College in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in History with a double minor in Music and English, where she also plans on being involved in Sterling’s Symphonic Band, Piano Program, Choir, Honors Program and Student Government.

“It is such an incredible honor to be able to represent my community, my college, my state, and my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the national level in this way,” Megan says. “I view these awards as opportunities entrusted to me so that I can point others to Christ and say a special thank you to all the incredible people in my life. Ratzlaff is Kansas finalist for transfer scholarship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — New Hutchinson YMCA Aquatics Director Sharla Powell wants people to know that if you need to learn to swim, now is the time.

"The best way you can prevent your child from drowning is to teach them how to swim," said Powell. "What better gift to give your kid?"

David Foster with the Y said they are teaching a lot of kids right now.

"In just our monthly classes, we've got around 55 kids," Foster said. "That doesn't count our academy, so around 60-75 total, usually, a month, sometimes it goes up a little more than that, based on our Y swim team numbers."

It doesn't take long to learn how to not drown, and yet, swimming is also a sport you can do for a lifetime.

"Safety, we can do that in probably a month or two, depending on the child, after we, you know, go through all those steps, then we start teaching the stroke development and gearing everything towards our swim team and swim team in high school."

Learning to swim is fun at YMCA

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel is pleased with the progress being made on the new Hilton Garden Inn and that it will be open for the 2025 NJCAA Tournament. However, she realizes that more rooms are still needed to get overall capacity in Hutchinson back to the levels that it was when the Atrium Hotel was still open.

"I think that could be a strong component to what we work on now that we have the Downtown Hutch Master Plan," Teufel said. "We're really hopeful that this hotel's going to be successful, and then we can defend the need for a hotel somewhere on the Main Street corridor at some point in the near future."

There was a study done in the past on where hotels should go that they are still paying attention to.

"When we looked at the hotel opportunities for development going back seven years ago, there was a study that was done about where is the right place for a hotel?" Teufel said. "Should it be downtown? Should it be near the fair or on the fairgrounds, or should it stay on the K-61 corridor? The reality is at that point, the study still proved out that the most successful place, at that point in time, would probably still be K-61. That's really led to where we are today. It doesn't mean that, for the future, as we continue to bolster the development of downtown, that there wouldn't be a place in the future for a hotel."

There is also the smaller concept that is already underway.

"We want to also see the opening of the Hoke and their new beautiful, boutique hotel," Teufel said. "That's really going to kind of help test the waters on can a downtown hotel be successful?"

The work on that building has been ongoing since the summer of 2021. They have not announced a date for completion yet.

Teufel: Downtown hotel concept may be next

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — <a href="https://www.facebook.com/bhappyphoboba">BHappy Pho &amp; Boba</a>, a Vietnamese restaurant, is slated to open downtown at the beginning of April at 19 East 2nd.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The owners of the new downtown restaurant are Diem Tran and her husband Hieu Nguyen.

"Right now we just need to wait for inspection so this week, we try to get everything done," Tran said."Deep cleaning all the equipment and then contact the health department for inspection."

&nbsp;Tran and Nguyen recently moved to Kansas to get away from the crowded city where they own a restaurant in Denver.&nbsp;

"We decided to go to Kansas City," Tran said. "Somehow late at night our son got a fever and then he woke up in the middle of the night and then my husband could hardly go back to sleep and he went online searching to find a spot for our business and then Hutchinson came up as his search result."

Just like it says in the restaurant name, pho and boba will be served. Pho is a vietnamese soup dish. Customers can order boba in iced tea, milk tea, smoothies and lemonade. Boba is pearl shaped and made of tapioca. It can be ordered in multiple flavors.&nbsp;

Tran said she and her husband are hiring for all available positions as of Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;

"So we are hiring people that work at the front line, front server, cashier," Tran said. "I've already hired a few people for the front but I'm still needing people that can work in the back."

Tran said the plan is to have BHappy Pho &amp; Boba open Monday-Saturday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. She said they will officially set business hours and the menu one week after opening.

Legacy Award (Business) - Conklin Automotive Group: Conklin Automotive Group is a 4th generation family-owned company that originally began as Stuart Conklin Buick in 1941 founded by Stuart Conklin Sr. Not only did Conklin grow locally, but they expanded to other communities in the state including Newton and Salina and have more than 280 employees in the state-wide organization. They have continued to reinvest and renovate their current locations with a

priority of serving their customers. The Conklin family also have a long history of giving back to the community and you can see that Stuart Conklin Sr instilled that principle of giving back to the community through the many Conklin family members who have continued that supportive legacy.

Legacy Award (Individual) – The Late Harland Priddle: Harland was a true servant leader, born in Haven, Kansas. After graduating from Kansas State University, he went into the US Air Force and spent 22 years before retiring as a colonel in July 1974. During his illustrious career he served as the Deputy Commander of the White House Communications Agency for President Nixon in 1970-74. After retirement he returned to Kansas where he served in many capacities including at the Kansas State Fair, Hutchinson National Bank, and even served as the Chair of the Chamber’s Tourism Committee. In 1982 he was tapped to be the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture under Governor Carlin and in 1986 was the Lt. Governor candidate with Jack Brier. In 1987 he was selected by Governor Mike Hayden as the first Kansas Secretary of Commerce. After his service to Kansas, he went on to do many things but most impactful was serving as the President of the Haven Chamber of Commerce in 2003 and Executive Vice President in 2002-2009. His hometown named Priddle Industrial Drive for his impact as he continued to dedicate his work to the development of the K96 Corridor Development Association. He made a tremendous difference on the economic development of Kansas and an impact on us through his servant leadership.

Small Business of the Year - The Rock Group, owned by Shane Iwashige: has been named Small Business of the Year. His dedication to customer satisfaction, business integrity, and community involvement exemplifies the spirit of small business excellence. Shane began his company in 2013 when he helped two friends purchase rental properties, remodel them, and then lease and serve as the property manager. Shane could be described as a Serial Entrepreneur – He has started, ran, and sold (a couple) small small successful businesses including: Rock Rentals, Rock Refresh, Rock Renovation, Landscapes, and Skyland Industrial (a compact construction Equipment sales and rental business). To add to that, Shane also maintains his real estate license. Shane donates to various benefit auctions, serves on several committees and is passionate about developing the adaptive leadership capacity of our community as a speaker, teacher, and coach.

Chamber honors local achievers at Awards Night

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The NJCAA has announced the beginning of a new event with the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Luncheon, presented by Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, that will take place in the historic Crystal Ballroom at The Burt in Hutchinson, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This will be a chance to hear from the coaches of the two teams that will participate in the championship game. After a schedule change this year, no games are played on Friday of the tournament at the Sports Arena. 

This event provides an opportunity for the community to engage with the two teams in the championship game and to celebrate their accomplishments.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Tickets for the 2024 championship luncheon are $25 and now available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased online and will be available to download on a mobile device or print-at-home immediately after purchase. Tickets will be on sale until March 22 at 5:00 p.m.&nbsp;

Friday luncheon new to tournament week; tickets close Mar. 22

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas notes that prices at the pump continue to rise.

"The national average was up 11 cents over the past week," Steward said. "Kansas has not seen as big of a jump in the past week or two. It's slowed a bit. Typically, this is the time of year where we start seeing demand increase, which we have. We've also seen crude oil prices top the $80 per barrel level."

Kansas prices are up 29 cents in the past month.

"Crude oil is a global commodity, for sure," Steward said. "A lot of those decisions are made by OPEC and other producing nations. They can kind of control the production levels and manage those prices."

The OPEC reference basket price, which is an average of per barrel crude oil prices across Africa and including Venezuela, is up from under $83 a barrel on the first of March to over $86 a barrel as of Wednesday.

"The good thing is, we are third-lowest in the nation right now in Kansas with our $3.17 a gallon," Steward said. "Typically, Kansas is one of the lowest in the nation. We've seen some interesting states that are in the top ten of lowest prices of late."

Some of the local counties are even below that state average.

Gas prices continue upward trend

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The We Are Salthawks-Ultimate Benefit and Auction is Saturday.

"It's at the Kansas State Fairgrounds Sunflower South building," said Amanda Parks with the Salthawk Booster Club. "We'd love to see everyone there. Even if you don't have an athlete, just come out and have a great night, because all of the money that we raise this weekend will go toward next year's sports."

The event has already raised $43,610 of the $125,000 goal as of Thursday morning before the Saturday event.

"If you go to the HHS Booster Club page on Facebook, you can find it," Parks said. "<a href="https://e.givesmart.com/events/uZJ/">Salthawk.givesmart.com</a> is the actual site for the auction."

The $125,000 goal is to cover all expenses for the event, in addition to giving $100,000 to the athletic department.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the northeast corner of 4th Avenue and North Main.

As evident by the dated keystone, this building was clearly built in 1889. The first occupant seems to have been the W.H. Benedict Coal, Grocery and Seed Dealer from 1893 to 1900.

Between 1904 and 1906, it was the Northside Coal &amp; Feed Co. by Edwin Yoder.

In 1908, it became the Harry Jones Furnished Rooms.

By 1912, it was divided up even more to include the Plumber, Tailors, and Novelty Works.

Between 1918 and 1941, it became the J.C. O'Donnell Hardware.

Between 1945 and 1958, it was the McCrory-Lyle Hardware. The first photo shows this enterprise in 1955 from a Kodacolor slide.

The second photo shows this business at opening in 1945.

Between 1958 and 1962, it was the Johnson-Lyle Hardware. From 1964-1965, it was the Used Furniture Center.

In 1966, the usage completely changed to become the Eldridge Mattress Factory. This continued to 1987.

In 1988, it became the Sunset Traders Pawn Shop with Steve Boll. The third photo shows the business at 400-402 N. Main today, with Darin Thrash as the business co-owner as well as the property owner. This property has been in the Thrash family for more than 36 years.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Sunset Pawn - Vol. 62

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With spring's official start this week, it's time to pay attention to caring for your pet to prevent fleas and ticks from making their life and your life miserable.

"This year, without being the start of a terrible drought like we've had the last two or three, it looks like we're going to have some moisture and humidity," said Jon Austin, DVM, with Hutchinson Small Animal Hospital. "Those factors go into success for hatching and living for fleas and ticks in our environment."

You still might be OK right now, with a drop into the 20s for Friday night, but plans should be underway.

"The ticks will definitely be out as soon as we quit having frost nights," Austin said. "As soon as the nights quit freezing, the ticks will be present. I've got clients that are country folk or are going camping kind of people, that live out in the woods, they're already buying their, in my practice, Bravecto, but there are lots of brands of the new generation of flea and tick control products that you can give your pet."

The treatments can be either oral or topical and they usually last 30 to 90 days before needing another dose.&nbsp;

"A lot of people get grossed out or kind of get the heebie jeebies if they think about their pet having an insect on it," Austin said. "Then, it can get into the house and get on them. That's okay to feel that way, but the real concern is that those insects also bring disease to your pet or could bring disease to you."

Ticks can be especially dangerous for humans, as they can carry Lyme disease,&nbsp;Rocky Mountain spotted fever and others. Check with your veterinarian right away if you do not have any flea and tick preventer at home already.

Austin: Spring means treating for fleas and ticks

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Semifinalists for the HutchCC President's position are being interviewed Friday and Saturday.

According to the Presidential hiring timeline at <a href="https://www.hutchcc.edu/president-search">HutchCC.edu</a>, the prospective replacements for Dr. Carter File will be narrowed to a group of finalists by the search committee on Monday, March 25, with campus visits scheduled for April 1.&nbsp;

The intent is to approve a new President by May 1 and have an installation on July 1.

The new hire will be the college's eighth president.

Interview process for new HutchCC President continues

“Wheat Rx is the Kansas farmer’s prescription for combining best management practices and variety selection for the economical and sustainable production of high-quality winter wheat,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “Informed by the research investments made by Kansas wheat producers through the Kansas Wheat Commission, these seminars are just what the doctor ordered for learning how to maximize profitability through variety selection and practices on the ground.”&nbsp;

The March seminars took place in Dodge City and Wichita. Presenters included a rundown of leading experts from Kansas State University that discussed cover crops and soil health, soil fertility, fungicides and the economics of wheat production.&nbsp;

Gregg Ibendhal and Daniel O’Brien, professors in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, shared the trends and predictions for wheat profitability in Kansas. They noted that machinery costs are still the largest expense category for growers, although that category is getting smaller. It’s no surprise that fertilizer expenses have increased greatly along with interest rates but explained the futures markets have not fully captured the risk of the continued Russian/Ukraine war. They also discussed the current and future supply and demand situation for the world’s major wheat importers and exporters.&nbsp;

Outside of the kernels in the bin, Dr. Romulo Lollato, K-State associate professor of wheat and forage production, discussed the agronomic, ecological and economic benefits of diversifying crop rotations with wheat. He walked through the impacts of simplified crop rotations due to a steep reduction in wheat acreage to food security and biodiversity. Conversely, after a comprehensive review of more than 300 peer-reviewed studies, his team outlined the benefits of adding wheat back into crop rotations, including forage production, dual-purpose use for grazing, weed control, interruption of pest population cycles and other benefits.&nbsp;

Speaking of disease and pest management, Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State assistant professor of plant pathology, presented on the management of the major wheat diseases in Kansas. Statewide, diseases like stripe rust, Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV), and scab are responsible for the most yield lost from 2013-2023. She walked through her research into disease management, including optimal timing of applications, the impact of dual applications, the influence of plant population and how well fungicides work in combination with variety resistance.&nbsp;

Moving from above to below ground level, Carlos Pires, a K-State agronomy post-doctoral student, discussed methods to improve soil health. He emphasized the benefits of regenerative ag practices like minimizing disturbance through no-till or minimum-till, maximizing soil cover through practices like cover crops, maximizing biodiversity through a mix of cash and cover crop or an integrated crop-livestock system and maximizing continuous living roots by reducing fallow and increasing cover cropping. He concluded that integrating cover crops into crop rotation will increase soil carbon, the amount of microbes, biological activity and aggregation to retain water, recognizing that these practices take financial investments and time.&nbsp;

The seminar ended with a discussion of fertility management specific to wheat by Dorivar Ruiz Diaz, K-State professor and soil fertility specialist. He discussed the most important nutrients to manage for wheat, including nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, chloride and lime (for low pH soils). He also walked through how growers can manage both yield and quality, including nitrogen volatilization and placement and the interaction of protein with nitrogen management.&nbsp;

The seminars are part of Wheat Rx, a partnership between Kansas Wheat and K-State Research and Extension to disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers. This effort includes a series of extension publications and educational outreach like the March seminars.

“We’ve learned a lot from the research funded by Kansas wheat farmers on the impact of variety selection and management practices on yield and quality come harvest,” Harries said. “Wheat Rx is our outreach effort to share those results with growers. We can’t control the weather, but these practices and tools are ones farmers can use to make an appreciable difference in their wheat crop.”&nbsp;

They also discussed the current and future supply and demand situation for the world’s major wheat importers and exporters.&nbsp;Outside of the kernels in the bin, Dr. Romulo Lollato, K-State associate professor of wheat and forage production, discussed the agronomic, ecological and economic benefits of diversifying crop rotations with wheat. He walked through the impacts of simplified crop rotations due to a steep reduction in wheat acreage to food security and biodiversity. Conversely, after a comprehensive review of more than 300 peer-reviewed studies, his team outlined the benefits of adding wheat back into crop rotations, including forage production, dual-purpose use for grazing, weed control, interruption of pest population cycles and other benefits.&nbsp;Speaking of disease and pest management, Kelsey Andersen Onofre, K-State assistant professor of plant pathology, presented on the management of the major wheat diseases in Kansas. Statewide, diseases like stripe rust, Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV), and scab are responsible for the most yield lost from 2013-2023. She walked through her research into disease management, including optimal timing of applications, the impact of dual applications, the influence of plant population and how well fungicides work in combination with variety resistance.&nbsp;Moving from above to below ground level, Carlos Pires, a K-State agronomy post-doctoral student, discussed methods to improve soil health. He emphasized the benefits of regenerative ag practices like minimizing disturbance through no-till or minimum-till, maximizing soil cover through practices like cover crops, maximizing biodiversity through a mix of cash and cover crop or an integrated crop-livestock system and maximizing continuous living roots by reducing fallow and increasing cover cropping. He concluded that integrating cover crops into crop rotation will increase soil carbon, the amount of microbes, biological activity and aggregation to retain water, recognizing that these practices take financial investments and time.&nbsp;The seminar ended with a discussion of fertility management specific to wheat by Dorivar Ruiz Diaz, K-State professor and soil fertility specialist. He discussed the most important nutrients to manage for wheat, including nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, chloride and lime (for low pH soils). He also walked through how growers can manage both yield and quality, including nitrogen volatilization and placement and the interaction of protein with nitrogen management.&nbsp;The seminars are part of Wheat Rx, a partnership between Kansas Wheat and K-State Research and Extension to disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers. This effort includes a series of extension publications and educational outreach like the March seminars.“We’ve learned a lot from the research funded by Kansas wheat farmers on the impact of variety selection and management practices on yield and quality come harvest,” Harries said. “Wheat Rx is our outreach effort to share those results with growers. Photos were taken of two individuals from the scene.

NEWTON, Kan. — Governor Laura Kelly announced&nbsp;today&nbsp;that GAF, a Standard Industries company and North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, will invest more than $300 million in&nbsp;Newton&nbsp;by constructing&nbsp;a new shingle plant.&nbsp;The estimated 275,000-square-foot facility will create more than 130 high-skilled manufacturing jobs in management, engineering,&nbsp;and operations.

“GAF’s expansion into Kansas once again showcases our status as a national leader in advanced manufacturing,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “The company’s innovative production methods and proven track record of community involvement make it an ideal partner for Newton and the entire state.”&nbsp;

GAF has more than 4,800 employees and operates in 30 locations across the U.S. producing commercial and residential roofing and waterproofing products and services for customers throughout North America. The Kansas Logistics Parks in Newton will be the company’s first location in Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;
