HUTCHINSON, Kan.  — New York Times bestselling author and an award-winning staff writer at The New Yorker magazine David Grann will present the second Dillon Lecture of the 2024 Series. Grann’s lecture will be held Tuesday, April 16 at 10:30 am at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

With the twists and turns of a thriller, it tells the true saga of a company of British naval officers and crew that became stranded on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia and descended into murderous anarchy.

Grann is also the author of Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, which documented one of the most sinister crimes and racial injustices in American history. Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" is a detour from our normal format. I thought we'd deviate from Hutch architectural history to Hutch social history.

This feature starts with "The Jades" — the house band at the Fireside Club at 1223 E. 30th, which was owned by Harold Nevius. The first photo shows The Jades in front of the Fireside Club sign in 1967.

These initial members were Bob Maddern, Dana Messing, John Hostutler, O'Dell Reed and Doug Messing. As the house band, they played four nights a week for several months before setting off to play all over Kansas on the weekends.

The second photo shows a publicity photo of The Jades in 1968, on stage at the Fireside when the band was Dana Messing, Darrel Milhon, O'Dell Reed, Dan Downing and Ron Dutton.

The third photo shows the group in 1970's attire at the soldiers and sailors monument.

The fourth photo shows the band "Beast" in 1973, that played the Fireside many times. Members included Donnie Wierman, Tom Rietcheck, Mike Schmidt, Dana Messing, Michael Kerns and Bruce Brown.

The fifth photo shows "Cruisin'" in 1987, that included Bill Jones, Bruce Brown and Dana Messing.

They came along after the Fireside closed and moved to the San Francisco Bay area. All these bands had one member in common: Dana Messing.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Hutch Bands - Vol. 65

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp; — USD 308 wants to inform the community before changing what buildings its students are in. Wednesday, April 10, the district hosted its fourth facilities meeting.&nbsp;

The district formed a Facility Steering Committee that started meeting on a regular basis in early 2023 to discuss options for a facility plan and what shifts were needed between buildings in the district. The committee is made up of about 50 members that include parents, community members, staff and administrators.&nbsp;

"And so as we were looking at facilities as widgets, and how do we move these facilities around and how do we assess them, it became evident a couple of months in that I don't think just looking at property is where we need to go," Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson said. "What we need to do, is to understand, where is it we are trying to go? What is our vision? What is our value in USD 308 to the community? What do we want for the future and not just how we move pieces around? So looking at the facilities isn't looking at taking care of our students or looking after the community. Its what do we value. What is our vison? Who are we and how do we get after that?

The committee found two key factors that they believe would be helpful for USD 308 which are the need to streamline and strengthen the early childhood education process and the need to streamline and strengthen middle school transitions and environment. The proposed solution is to create a dedicated early education center in the district and one dedicated location for a middle school. The middle school would include grades 6-8.&nbsp;The committee found that one early childhood education center will provide a seamless transition to kindergarten and barriers to childhood development that could be spotted early.&nbsp;

"We are rich in early childhood programs, but if you are a new young person coming into the community, or you're not imbedded into the programs that exist because for me it seems simple," Johnson said.&nbsp; I know where all the pieces are. I know how they all work but we talked to a lot of young communities. A lot of young families and you know Kari's (Mailloux) co-chair in this facility&nbsp; is Jordan Fee (committee members) and Jordan was really key in opening my eyes, to say&nbsp; we don't understand it. I don't know where to go. Do I go to the Early Education Center? Do I go to Park Place where you have early childhood? Do I go to Morgan Elementary where you have (early childhood)? What's happening at Shirley J. Hutcherson?&nbsp;&nbsp;

A few positive factors to creating a 6-8 middle school the committee found is more space for STEM, computer and music classrooms in the elementary schools. Currently, sixth graders are a part of the elementary schools in Hutchinson and there are two separate buildings for seventh and eighth grade. The committee said it would also reduce maintenance cost to have one middle school building and more opportunities for stronger relationships between staff and students.&nbsp;

"I see several benefits to having middle school in one dedicated location,"Assistant Principal and Athletic Director of HMS-7 Melissa Evans said. "When you think about your students, I see them being a building for three years, being able to establish those relationships with adults in their building, being familiar with their surroundings and then academically to accelerate and provide interventions as needed but being one grade level in a building is difficult. Every single school year you start over with an entirely new student population and I think several educators would attest to that. It takes some time to build relationships and trust with these kiddos."&nbsp;

The mill rate in the Hutchinson school district for Bond and Interest is set at 10.380.&nbsp; Assistant Superintendent of Finance Sheila Meggers said to generate $80 million dollars for a bond issue, the district would need to ask for more four mills in taxes on an election ballot. A mill rate of 1 means you pay $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of your property's assessed value. Meggers told Hutch Post that the district owes 27 million dollars owed in previous bonds.&nbsp;

"If we kept the 10, it still would take four (mills) and there are two reasons for that,"&nbsp;Meggers said."One,things cost more to build but the other piece to it is the state formula. The state pays a percent of every dollar that we pay on these depending on districts across the state that are a little bit lower wealth district property value wise. We are one of those that reap the benefit of a lot of state aid when we did our last bond.  That formula has changed several times in the last few years."&nbsp;

In addition to the middle school and Pre-K projects, a portion of a potential larger bond issue could also go towards the following elementary school projects in USD 308:&nbsp;

Johnson said after gathering all feedback in April, the board of education will meet about the feedback from the committee in May. The BOE will hold an additional meeting in May to vote if they want to go forward with a resolution for a bond issue or if they want to set the idea aside for awhile.

The middle school would be about $78.5 million if built new and the Pre-K center would be about $17.6 million.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The options presented to the board will be for bond issues between $60 million and $120 million depending on how much of the work they decide to put in front of the voters.

Johnson said the board can put out a special bond election in September, put the ballot question on the federal and national election ballot in November or put out a special bond election next Spring.&nbsp;

The middle school would include grades 6-8.&nbsp;The committee found that one early childhood education center will provide a seamless transition to kindergarten and barriers to childhood development that could be spotted early.&nbsp;"We are rich in early childhood programs, but if you are a new young person coming into the community, or you're not imbedded into the programs that exist because for me it seems simple," Johnson said.&nbsp; I know where all the pieces are. I know how they all work but we talked to a lot of young communities. A lot of young families and you know Kari's (Mailloux) co-chair in this facility&nbsp; is Jordan Fee (committee members) and Jordan was really key in opening my eyes, to say&nbsp; we don't understand it. I don't know where to go. Do I go to the Early Education Center? Do I go to Park Place where you have early childhood? Do I go to Morgan Elementary where you have (early childhood)? What's happening at Shirley J. Hutcherson?&nbsp;&nbsp;A few positive factors to creating a 6-8 middle school the committee found is more space for STEM, computer and music classrooms in the elementary schools. Currently, sixth graders are a part of the elementary schools in Hutchinson and there are two separate buildings for seventh and eighth grade. The committee said it would also reduce maintenance cost to have one middle school building and more opportunities for stronger relationships between staff and students.&nbsp;"I see several benefits to having middle school in one dedicated location,"Assistant Principal and Athletic Director of HMS-7 Melissa Evans said. "When you think about your students, I see them being a building for three years, being able to establish those relationships with adults in their building, being familiar with their surroundings and then academically to accelerate and provide interventions as needed but being one grade level in a building is difficult. Every single school year you start over with an entirely new student population and I think several educators would attest to that. It takes some time to build relationships and trust with these kiddos."&nbsp;The mill rate in the Hutchinson school district for Bond and Interest is set at 10.380.&nbsp; Assistant Superintendent of Finance Sheila Meggers said to generate $80 million dollars for a bond issue, the district would need to ask for more four mills in taxes on an election ballot. A mill rate of 1 means you pay $1 in taxes for every $1,000 of your property's assessed value. Meggers told Hutch Post that the district owes 27 million dollars owed in previous bonds.&nbsp;<figure>

The state pays a percent of every dollar that we pay on these depending on districts across the state that are a little bit lower wealth district property value wise. We are one of those that reap the benefit of a lot of state aid when we did our last bond. Facilities meeting discusses grade restructure

NEWTON, Kan. — At Tuesday night’s meeting, the City Commission established a program to help downtown merchants and property owners improve their building façades.

As recommended by the Newton Main Street Board, the program will provide a rebate of 50% of costs, up to $3,000, for eligible exterior improvements that will enhance the appearance of the downtown and the experience of residents and visitors. Eligible projects could include:

Replacement of doors, awnings, or windows

To receive a grant, property owners must be current on property taxes and have no outstanding code or other violations. Projects must be of high quality and meet Kansas Main Street Design Guidelines, any applicable historic guidelines, City and Zoning Codes, etc.

The City allocated $30,000 of old Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) revitalization funds to the program. The grant will have a rolling deadline, and applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted.

Newton providing program to improve downtown look

SALINA, Kan. — Twenty-two teams from 15 Kansas schools will travel to Salina on Saturday with their sights set on winning a state title in the Kansas KidWind Challenge. To qualify for the event, each team placed first or second in their age division at one of six regional competitions held throughout the state. Saturday's competition will determine the top two teams in each age bracket that will represent Kansas in the World KidWind Challenge in Minneapolis, MN.

The state finals will be held at the Temple, 336 S. Santa Fe Ave in Salina beginning at 8 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. Area educators are encouraged to attend to find out more about KidWind and see the fun, excitement and learning firsthand. KidWind is gaining momentum across the state with 84 teams from 50 schools competing this year.

To prepare for the KidWind competition, team members work together to design, build and test a wind turbine using the materials of their choice. Each team’s turbine will be put to the test in a 48" × 48" wind tunnel at a wind speed of approximately 3.0 meters/second (6.7 miles/hour). Scoring is based on turbine performance and efficiency, a knowledge quiz, an instant challenge, and a presentation to judges where the team explains its design process.

KidWind State Finals in Salina Saturday

A late March freeze, blustery days of blowing dust and predicted 80-degree afternoons — the dramatic springtime weather in Kansas can leave everyone wondering what exactly is coming next, especially wheat producers watching their stands green up after the winter. Kansas Wheat caught up with farmer leaders from across the state to check on how this crop is stacking up compared to last year’s drought-stricken fields.&nbsp;

According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) crop progress report for the week ending April 7, 2024, winter wheat was rated at 49 percent good to excellent, 37 percent fair and 14 percent very poor to poor. A third of winter wheat, primarily in the southern tier and central-to-east regions of the state has jointed, ahead of both last year and the five year average.&nbsp;

Producers are currently spraying a good stand of wheat for bugs and worms in far western Kansas, where Jason Ochs farms near Syracuse. The area is in a pocket of Kansas that received adequate, but extremely variable, moisture over the winter, which was just enough to keep them out of drought status and maintain a good stand of wheat.&nbsp;

“The wheat drilled in absolutely beautifully, and we got a good stand right off the bat,” he said. “It’s a nice change.”&nbsp;

The cold temperatures at the end of March did burn just the tips of wheat, but Ochs was more concerned about spraying and getting that next round of moisture than freeze damage. He reported the top two to four inches is starting to look pretty dry.&nbsp;

“We missed the last three or four moisture chances, so optimism is going down a little bit,” Ochs said. “As of now, it looks like we are going to definitely raise above-average yields. I don’t know how you cannot be a little excited about that.”

A swath through central Kansas is in moderate drought, having missed out on the winter moisture that benefitted the western part of the state. That’s certainly true where Martin Kerschen farms in Reno and Sedgwick counties. He reported that ponds are still dry, and the wheat is starting to show that blue tint, indicating drought stress. He is also more concerned with the impact of upcoming 80-degree days this weekend than with the singed tops from the freeze late last month.&nbsp;

“Without moisture, it’s not going to be the best of situations,” Kerschen said. “But it looks a lot better right now than it did last year. That’s one positive.”

Near Plainville in north-central Kansas, Mike McClellan also feels like he’s always waiting for moisture. He planted his wheat late, waiting for rains, and some of it did not come up until the first part of March. The late emergence prevented freeze damage since the wheat was not in as vulnerable of a growth stage.

“Most of the wheat in our area is really small and has taken off now, so that helped us get through the freeze ok,” McClellan said. “Now we’re starting to get some growth and all of a sudden we’re starting to worry about moisture again.”&nbsp;

With four days of wind at more than 40 miles per hour, that next rainfall event is critical. However, he pointed out that he did not cut any of his winter wheat last year, so this year still has him feeling better about this crop’s chances.&nbsp;

Further north, near the Nebraska border, Chris Tanner feels like the drought may finally be breaking where he farms around Norton. He had nice fall moisture to drill in his wheat and then had a couple of torrential downpours and a few snows that maintained good moisture.&nbsp;

“Our profiles are a lot better than we’ve had in the last three years,” Tanner said. “It feels better coming out of a drought rather than going into it. We’ve done our time.”&nbsp;

The wheat in this area was not far enough along to suffer from cold temperatures, but a few spotty fields are showing a little stress. At this point, however, he is feeling optimistic about this year’s crop.&nbsp;

“We’re a lot better off than we have been in the last several years,” he said. “Right now, it’s one of the better-looking crops that I’ve seen in the last 10 years.”&nbsp;

After this time with the bank and a 44-year working career, Keith has been looking forward to having more time for family, volunteer work and other business interests.

“Over this very long career I have been blessed with very talented, hard-working team members that made my job easier and enjoyable. Hughes retires from First National Bank of Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday on a 3-2 vote approved an agreement with Superior Holding to have a pilot program for hiring incentives for those moving into Reno County to work there.

"They would be providing a relocation incentive to individuals moving here," Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce CEO Debra Teufel said at a previous meeting. "They have to be documented that they are moving here by establishing residency, proving that their residency was elsewhere and that they establish residence in Reno County. They would have to provide that documentation to our office. Then, on a quarterly basis, we would provide a report to Reno County to draw down from a set aside fund that would be capped at this point, based on those 50 jobs, at $2500 per job, a total of $125,000, in order for them to then recieve a portion of a match to that on a reimbursement basis."

Doug Wright from Superior Holding said they already have the business need for more people.

"We've used a lot of different means over the last three to four years," Wright said. "This is just another avenue for us to pursue finding talented skills to find people, even some professional people, to come into Reno County and support what we do."

Commissioners made clear that Superior is exactly the type of business they would support such an incentive for, if they were for incentives at all. However, both John Whitesel and Don Bogner, who ultimately voted against the program, had concerns about setting a precedent that other less community-minded employers might seek to take advantage of.

"There's the reality that it's a competitive atmosphere and we can't change that," said commissioner Daniel Friesen, who ultimately voted for the incentive. "We have to stay competitive as a county to stay in the market, keep these job creators happy and lower our taxes. I just would encourage everyone to look at the entire picture here and understand. We're trying to lower taxes by growing our economy."

The pilot program will be in place for two years.&nbsp;

County Commission approves Superior incentive program

HAVEN, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has rescinded a boil water advisory for&nbsp;the&nbsp;City of Haven&nbsp;public water supply system&nbsp;located&nbsp;in&nbsp;Reno&nbsp;County.&nbsp;The advisory was&nbsp;issued&nbsp;because&nbsp;of a loss of pressure&nbsp;due to tower maintenance. Failure to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination. &nbsp;

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether&nbsp;it’s&nbsp;the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.&nbsp;

Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Haven indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.  &nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson is set to come alive with an array of sights, sounds and scents for the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale. This year's event is April 12 and 13.

"The Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale exists for the purpose of helping to support the Mennonite Central Committee, which is a humanitarian arm of combined Mennonite churches," said Jim Robb with KMRS. "Around the world, the funds we raise help to feed people, help to provide water, help to deal with emergencies, whether that's man made or natural. We're extended to 45 countries around the world."

What is the KMRS? KMRS is an event featuring five diverse auctions, children activities, local crafts, traditional Mennonite foods and numerous homemade goods. Kansas Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Amish congregations join together—utilizing an all-volunteer staff--to organize, donate items and funds to make the sale possible.

The Mennonite Central Committee is still working in Ukraine, even as their conflict with Russia continues.

"We're still providing food," Robb said. "There's a group associated with the Mennonite Brethren Church in the Ukraine that are partners, that are MCC partners. We're able to get food and resources that allow them to be able to live. Medical, clothes, all of those kinds of things. These are to people who are refugees or who are still trying to hang on to living where they've always tried to live."

&nbsp;In 2023, KMRS donated $610,000 to MCC. The donation total is a combination of sale proceeds and other donations to KMRS.

The five auctions are the Quilt Auction, featuring over 200 plus hand-crafted quilts and quilt related items (see quilt gallery at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas.mccsale.org/" target="_blank">www.kansas.mccsale.org</a>); the General Auction&nbsp;features a wide spectrum of items such as Modern Farm Equipment, antique tractors, vehicles, tools, antiques and handcrafted furniture and childrens’ toys and décor items; Silent Auction; a kid’s auction on Saturday at 10 a.m.; and a Surplus Auction.

Also being sold are fair trade coffee/chocolates, Kansas craft items, Christmas décor, 1,000 garden plants, souvenirs, baked foods, cheeses, hams, and sausage. The children’s activity building includes 9-hole mini golf, barrel train and various inflatables donated by Inflate-O-Fun, Inc., for all ages—all located inside the Pride of Kansas Building. Traditional Mennonite and American foods also served throughout the fairgrounds.

A 5K Run for Relief is scheduled Saturday morning at 8 a.m. at Rice Park (off the fairgrounds.) Entry forms are available at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas.mccsale.org/" target="_blank">www.kansas.mccsale.org</a>.

KMRS begins at 4 p.m. Friday with food service in all buildings including Feeding the Multitude, featuring Russian-German and Swiss Mennonite foods in the Cottonwood Court. The sale continues on Saturday with breakfast service starting at 7 a.m., sale of priced items at 8 a.m. and the Silent Auction reopens bidding at 8 a.m. while the General and Quilt auctions start at 8:45 a.m.. The weekend concludes with the Surplus Auction in Sunflower South starting about 2:30 p.m..

The Mennonites who lived in South Russia—current day Ukraine--in 1920 were in a desperate situation. They were on the verge of starving to death. They made a plea to the Mennonites in Canada and the United States for help.

This plea formed the world-relief organization known as Mennonite Central Committee. For over 100 years, MCC has expanded into 40 plus countries providing relief, development and peace projects including today’s Ukraine. A network of fundraisers called Relief Sales throughout North America seek to raise funds to support the work of MCC.

Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale starts Friday

The Hutchinson Community College Theatre Department will present The Boys Next Door this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 12 - 14. The show will be held at 7:00 p.m. on April 12 - 13 and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at the Stringer Fine Arts Center B.J. Warner Recital Hall on the HutchCC campus. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for non-HutchCC students and will be available nightly prior to each performance.

The Boys Next Door is a play by Tom Griffin, first produced in 1986. Set in the Boston area, it deals with four men with various mental disabilities who live in a group home. It takes place over roughly a two-month period and consists of brief vignettes about the men's lives. The play provides a humorous commentary on the men's lives, taking a surprising turn as Barry's father comes to visit and as Jack (their caretaker) accepts a new job. It was adapted into a television film in 1996 by Hallmark Entertainment. The show is being produced in collaboration with TECH with the goal of connecting with the audience to educate and advocate.

Office of Rural Prosperity grant event April 16 and 17

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — PrairieStar Health Center is hosting a contest for grades K-8 for a name for a new character joining the Pediatric Department.

“The PrairieStar Pediatric department has a new character joining the office, but he is in need of a name that represents the students he will be greeting each day,” Marketing Director Kyran Crist said.

The contest is open to grades kindergarten through eight, students can submit one entry online at the <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdZJktaUxMWpJNQtjQbanQlcW77iRlGMGN8dDOlaI80Odo66Q/viewform">provided link</a>, or on the sign up form in the Pediatric Department. To be entered, submit a name, the student's name and grade, and contact information.

Entries can be submitted starting April 10; submissions will close April 24 and a winner will be chosen May 1.

Three winners will be chosen. First place will receive a $25 gift card to Freddy’s Frozen Custard, second and third will receive a $5 gift card to Dairy Queen. All winners will also receive a PrairieStar gift bag.

Kids character naming contest at PrairieStar

MCPHERSON, Kan. —McPherson Public Schools announced that Mr. Ty Rhodes will serve as Assistant Superintendent of McPherson Public Schools effective July 1, 2024.

When asked what he looks forward to, Mr. Rhodes shared the following: “McPherson is a community and school system that has achieved a tremendous amount of success in all areas. I am looking forward to joining an incredibly strong leadership team and finding new opportunities for growth, both individually and for the system.”

Mr. Rhodes comes from Hesston High School, where he has served as Principal for the past 11 years.  Prior to becoming Principal, he served as Activities Director and Assistant Principal for Hesston High School. 

Under his leadership, Hesston has received a significant state-level recognition through the Kansas Star Award Program presented by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) each year: 2023 - Gold Awards (highest level) for Graduation Rate &amp; Postsecondary Success 2022 - Gold Awards (highest level) for Graduation Rate &amp; Postsecondary Success 2021 - Silver Award for Graduation Rate and Gold Award Postsecondary Success 2020 - Gold Awards (highest level) for Graduation Rate &amp; Postsecondary Success 2019 - Silver Awards for Graduation Rate and Postsecondary Success
