PITTSBURG – Sophomore Louise Cocking continued a tremendous indoor season on Sunday with a Region VI championship with a regional championship and a new Hutchinson Community College school record at Pittsburg State’s Plaster Center.

Cocking scored 20 team points to lead the Blue Dragon women to a fifth-place finish in the 2022 Region VI Indoor Championships.

The Blue Dragons finished with 53 team points. Cloud County ran away with the team title scoring 203 points. Barton was second with 143 points and Fort Scott was third with 85 points.

On Saturday, Cocking ran the leadoff leg of the national qualifying Blue Dragon 4x800-meter relay team. The All-American cross country runner is a four-event qualifier for the 2022 indoor championships in two weeks.

Cocking was the Blue Dragons’ only regional champion this weekend. She won the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:39.84, winning the event by 4.25 seconds over Cloud County’s Melody Ochana.

Cocking was also the Region VI runner-up in the Mile Run. Cocking’s runner-up time of 5:19.22 was a personal best and a new Blue Dragon team record. Cocking surpassed Ruth Limo, who ran 5:22.21 in 2002.

Sophomore Noel Buckhaltz completed an 11-point performance with two placings on Sunday. Also a members of Saturday’s national-qualifying 4x800 relay team, Buckhaltz placed fourth in the 1,000 meters and fifth in the Mile Run.

Buckhaltz posted a PR in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:14.06. That is the seventh-fastest Blue Dragon indoor 1,000-meter time in program history. Buckhaltz ran 5:28.72 to place fifth in the Mile.

Gabi Unruh placed eighth in the high jump after clearing 4 feet, 9 inches.

Keneah Romney was eighth in the 600 meters at 1:43.17.

Romney ran the anchor leg of Hutchinson’s eighth-place 4x400 relay team. Courtney Baetz, Kiana Brown, Emme Watkins and Romney ran a time of 4:20.95.

PITTSBURG – Down to the final event of the 2022 Region VI Indoor Championships, the Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team hadn’t earned any new national qualifying marks.

The Blue Dragon 4x400 Relay took care of that by becoming the seventh qualifier for the NJCAA Championships for the Blue Dragons in a sixth-place finish on Sunday at Pittsburg State’s Plaster Center.

Hutchinson wound up ninth overall scoring 42 points. Cloud County won the men’s team title with 119 points. Barton and Butler tied for second with 97 points.

The Blue Dragon relay team of Davion Gardenhire, Jovan Jackson, Cleydterrious Thompson and Sharim Hamilton placed sixth in the Region VI championships with a national qualifying time of 3:19.00. That time is the third fastest indoor 4x400 relay time in Blue Dragon history.

Two members of that relay scored individual points for the Blue Dragons on Sunday.

Thompson, already a national qualifier in the event, finished seventh in the 60 meters with a time of 6.87 seconds.

Hamilton placed sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 48.99 seconds.

Caleb Manning scored points in two events on Sunday. He placed fifth in the high jump after clearing 6-2.75. Manning also placed seventh in the triple jump with a jump of 45-11.75.

Antonio Cooper placed fourth in the shot put with a top effort of 51 feet, 5.50 inches. He nailed that distance on the second throw of the finals.

Alexander Holt finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.38 seconds.

Andrei Fuentes placed sixth in the triple jump with a time of 46-3.14.

Hutch 4x400 relay reaches national-qualifying mark at Region VI

Timothy Lee Siefkes, loving husband, dad, and “Papa,” died on February 13, 2022. Tim, son of Kenneth Lee and Joyce (Metz) Siefkes, was born on November 19, 1955, in Junction City, Kansas. He lived an adventurous childhood with his brother and sisters and loved spending time with his extended family in Hudson, where his parents were raised. Tim was a proud Eagle Scout, and some of his favorite times growing up were with his Boy Scout troop, led by his dad, exploring remote areas of Canada and the mountains of Montana and Colorado. Colorado always held a particularly special place in Tim’s heart, where he hiked several 14ers, and vacationed most summers throughout his life with family and friends.

Tim’s dad also influenced his love of science, from geology to astronomy. Often joking that he was like Cliff Clayburn from “Cheers,” Tim proclaimed to have a “vast knowledge of useless information,” and was always reading and learning. When Tim was in 8th&nbsp;grade, he moved with his family a few houses down the street from Andrea Bowen, and told himself he would marry her someday! They were friends at Buhler High School, where Tim was the kicker on the football team, and Andrea cheered the team on as president of the Pep Club. Tim’s love of photography flourished as he filmed the football teams at HCC and later at Ft. Hays State University, where he graduated with a degree in Art and Photography. Despite attending different colleges, Tim and Andrea reconnected and began dating their senior year, and were married in the summer of 1980!

Tim spent most of his career at General Laboratories, where he used his drafting skills and certifications as a Fire &amp; Explosion Investigator and Private Investigator, in a forensic engineering capacity. In 2008, Tim joined his father-in-law and brother-in-law’s company, Premiere Oil &amp; Exploration Inc., as Oil Production Manager. Tim also owned and operated Sunflower Video Productions for 25 years, videotaping over 600 weddings and many events around the community.

Tim was an involved parent, never missing an athletic event, music performance, or dance recital.&nbsp; Tim’s enthusiasm for attending his daughters’ tennis meets waned a bit when he was told that spectators have to be quiet during the matches. He was proud to be President of the Buhler High Booster Club during Courtney and Amy’s high school years.&nbsp; When his daughters took off to K-State for college, Tim became an avid football fan and season ticket holder.&nbsp; He loved fixing food for the tailgates, especially his famous smoked brisket, chili, and grilled hamburgers.

Tim cherished his friends, both from childhood and those he made as an adult. In his younger days Tim enjoyed playing softball, where he was known to hit homeruns over the Fun Valley fence. Later in life he took up golfing, smoking cigars by the campfire, talking politics, and eating barbeque with his friends, who were always up to some kind of Seinfeld-influenced shenanigans.&nbsp; Tim appreciated the friendships he made at church, including the Life Group he and Andrea were a part of.

Tim is survived by: his loving wife, Andrea; daughter, Courtney Siefkes, Austin, TX, daughter, Amy Messer (Travis), Gardner; grandchildren, Hadley and Bennett Messer, Gardner; stepmother, Carol Siefkes, Louisburg; siblings, Kelly Siefkes (Diane), Hutchinson, Tammy Metzler (Mike), Goddard, and Julie Siefkes, Wichita; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Tim was preceded in death by: his parents, Ken and Joyce Siefkes, sister, Kerry Stevens; and parents-in-law, Ralph and Shirley Bowen.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 25, 2022, at First Church of the Nazarene, 4290 N. Monroe, Hutchinson. For those wishing to view online, the service will be livestreamed on the church’s website: hutchfirstnaz.org.

MIDWEST CITY, Ok. – One day after being held to a season-low three hits, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team unleashed an offensive onslaught on the Rose State Raiders on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons combined for 31 runs and 31 hits in Games 2 and 3 of a three-game series against Rose State. Hutchinson defeated the Raiders 17-0 in five innings in Game 1 and 14-2 in the second game to win the three-game series 2 games to 1.

The Blue Dragons improve to 4-2 for the season. Hutchison travels to Waco, Texas next weekend to take on Frank Phillips College and two games against McLennan College.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2021-22/bios/mclaughlin_ben_kvcj">Ben McLaughlin</a>&nbsp;had a huge day with a combined 6-for-8 performance with eight RBIs to lead the Blue Dragon offense.

Blue Dragon pitchers were equally strong on Saturday, allowing just two runs and seven hits combined with a combined 12 strikeouts.

GAME 1 RECAP McLaughlin's third home run of the season highlighted a four-run first inning. The Blue Dragons then exploded for a 10-run second inning.

The Dragons sent 14 batters to the plate in that second inning, the 11th time in the Ryan Schmidt era the Dragons have had 10 or more runs in an inning. Hutchinson led 14-0 after two innings.

Four different Blue Dragons had multi-hit games as Hutchinson racked up 14 total hits, including five extra base hits.

McLaughlin went 3 for 4 with four RBIs to lead the Blue Dragons offensively in the opening game. He hit his third home run in the first inning. He added RBI singles in the second and fifth innings.

Blue Dragon Baseball's offense comes to life against Raiders

TISHOMINGO, Ok. – Pitchers&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2021-22/bios/munson_emily_mas6">Emily Munson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2021-22/bios/wertz_riley_z5pw">Riley Wertz</a>&nbsp;worked nine-consecutive scoreless innings to lead the Hutchinson Community College softball team to a 4-2 victory in 10 innings in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Saturday at Murray State College.

Murray State's offense came to life in one inning in Game 2 and then the Aggies had to hold off the Blue Dragons in a 5-4 win over the Blue Dragons to split the doubleheader.

Now 5-3, the Blue Dragons play a doubleheader against North Central Texas at Noon on Sunday in Gainesville, Texas.

GAME 1 RECAP Murray State scored two runs in the first inning and then the Blue Dragon pitching staff kicked into high gear.

After allowing two runs in that first inning, Munson retired 10 of the next 12 batters she faced. The No. 19-ranked Blue Dragons clinched an opening-round bye for the upcoming Region VI Tournament after a 75-66 victory over the Grizzlies on Friday at the Power Plant. This game was postponed three different times by wintry weather.

The Blue Dragons improved to 22-6 overall and 16-6 in the KJCCC, holding onto second place in the league with two games to play. Hutchinson travels to Pratt at 7 p.m. on Monday in another make-up game before closing the regular season on Wednesday at Garden City.

Leading 61-59 with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the second half, a scramble for a loose ball after a missed shot went out of bounds last touched by Butler with 1 second remaining on the shot put. The Blue Dragons won their fourth-straight road game with a 65-58 victory over Butler at the Power Plant in a game finally made up after three postponements.

Hutchinson improved to 24-5 overall and 18-5 in the Jayhawk Conference with one game to play. That game will be at Garden City on Wednesday. The Blue Dragons complete a season sweep of the Grizzlies who fall to 15-11 overall and 10-11 in the KJCCC.

With the victory, Blue Dragon head coach John Ontjes tied Jim Littell for the second-most coaching wins in Jayhawk Conference and Region VI history with his 418th win with the Blue Dragons.

The Blue Dragons had an odd shooting night, shooting 34.3 percent overall for the game and just 4 of 35 from 3-point range. Inside the 3-point line, though, the Blue Dragons shot 59.3 percent (19 of 32).

Kailahi led the Blue Dragons with 21 points, going 8 of 8 from inside the arc and 5 of 5 from the foul line. Kailahi added nine rebounds. Kailahi had 13 points and five rebounds to help the Blue Dragons extend a three-point lead at halftime.

Payne was tremendous on the boards with 7 of her 8 rebounds on the offensive glass. That effort led to a 33-30 Hutchinson rebounding advantage with 14 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points.

Harry J. DeGarmo, 93, died February 15, 2022, at his home.&nbsp; He was born November 7, 1928, in Macksville, the son of Clyde F. and Clara (Mitchell) DeGarmo.&nbsp; Harry was the youngest of their 15 children.

Harry attended Hutchinson Community College, Emporia State University, and Wichita State University.&nbsp; He earned his CPA license in 1970.

Harry moved to Hutchinson from Garden City, in 1964.&nbsp; He was an accountant for Ark Valley Cooperative Dairy, a partner in the CPA firm of J. William Knightly and Company, and later held various positions in the accounting department at Dillon Stores.&nbsp; He retired in February of 1994, after 21 years of service for Dillon Stores.

Harry was an avid woodworker.&nbsp; He enjoyed home remodeling, and building furniture and cabinets for his family, friends, and the churches he attended.&nbsp; Harry’s favorite project was making rocking horses; he built over 100 of them, gifting them to family and friends.

Harry attended Grace Bible Church, and was a former member of Park Place Christian Church and Mitchell Chapel United Methodist Church.&nbsp;

On July 3, 1949, Harry married LaWanda Miller in Macksville; she died November 19, 1990.&nbsp; He married Sheila A. (Bartlett) Gumble on March 21, 1991.&nbsp;

Harry is survived by:&nbsp; his wife, Sheila of Hutchinson; children, Anita DeZego (John) of St. Louis, MO, Jay DeGarmo (Becky) of Las Vegas, NV, Lisa Johnson (Steven) of Omaha, NE, Lori Mallory (Steven) of Olathe, Martin Gumble (Donna) of Hutchinson, Michelle Reavis (Joe) of Nickerson, Mitch Gumble (Jill), Matthew Gumble, and Melinda Ayres (Doug), all of Hutchinson; son-in-law, Kurt Wilcoxen of Independence, MO; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and over 50 nieces and nephews.

Harry was preceded in death by: his parents; a daughter, Mona Wilcoxen, 10 brothers; and four sisters.

Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy is continuing to expand its offerings to students throughout USD 308 and 12 other schools in Central Kansas.

"Starting next year, we'll have 22 career pathways total," said Travis Riebel, Director at HCTEA. "When we look at opportunities for students, the full training programs are shared programs with Hutchinson Community College. We have six particular programs, ranging from Automotive Mechanics, Automotive Collision Repair, Machine Technology, Building Trades and Welding. We also offer medical science training, such as CNA and CMA training."

The key to deciding what direction to go is centered in an individualized plan of study.

"With that, students are able to work with their teachers," Riebel said. "At the high school, we have our seminar teachers who are career advisors. They have conversations starting early on classes they take, career assessments, as well as any career research, college research, post-secondary, whichever that might be, to develop their individual plan as they go through high school and map out their road for post-secondary success, as well."

There are several additional areas that HCTEA will be offering courses in starting in 2022-2023.

"In the computer science realm, we're looking at some beginning coding classes for high school freshmen and sophomores through the project lead the way curriculum," Riebel said. "We're also introducing an agricultural education, to really introduce students to the food and fiber industry, with classes like intro to agriculture, agriscience, animal science and food science, as well as starting an FFA chapter at the school. Other new classes include, drones, unmanned aerial systems. Leanna Gleason, our communications and video broadcasting teacher, she has been incorporating drones into video broadcasting for years, but we're going to offer a course specifically to train students on that technology. It is our responsibility to recruit tomorrow's teachers, so we have a new class called teaching as a career."

They intend to have all of these pathways also include an internship component, so that students can see what they would like and not like about working in the field where they are being trained.

Velma L. Beeler, 89, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at Legend Senior Living, Hutchinson, KS. She was born April 15, 1932 in Great Bend, KS, the daughter of Henry and Virginia (Unruh) Koehn.She graduated Radium High School, Radium, KS and attended Sterling College, Sterling, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp; On May 24, 1951 she married Donald F. Beeler in Russell, KS. &nbsp;Velma worked at Good Samaritan Society as a LPN charge nurse and retired after 30 years.&nbsp; In her spare time, she enjoyed putting puzzles together.&nbsp; &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Beeler; a son, Kenny Beeler; a son-in-law, Danny Chambers Sr.; and two brothers, Vernon and Harold Koehn.&nbsp; Velma is survived by three daughters, Susan Tipton, Sharon (Dave) Cook, and Linda Chambers; 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 21, 2022, at Hutchinson Funeral Chapel, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; Visitation will be held from 2-6 p.m. with family greeting guests from 4-6 p.m., on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at the funeral chapel. The Blue Dragons (20-6) play host to the Seward County Saints in the final home game of the regular season 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

After a tough 92-89 road victory on Monday at Northwest Tech, the Blue Dragons (20-6 overall) improved to 14-6, which is good enough for place in the Jayhawk Conference with four games to play. The top four teams in the final KJCCC standings will earn opening-round byes for the Region VI Tournament. The Blue Dragons lead fifth-place Coffeyville and Colby to 2.5 games.

Both Hutchinson and Seward County have 48-hour turnarounds for Wednesday's game.

Hutchinson (23-4) remain tied for first place in the Jayhawk Conference with Independence at 17-4. Each team has three games remaining. The Blue Dragons have Seward County, Butler and Garden City left to play. The Pirates, who are off Wednesday, have Northwest Tech, Dodge City and Butler remaining. The Blue Dragons have clinched a first-round bye for the upcoming Region VI Tournament.

The Blue Dragons won their 10th game in a row on Monday night, an 87-68 victory at Northwest Tech. Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2021-22/bios/williams_mya_q2zy">Mya Williams</a>, the reigning KJCCC Player of the Week, had a third-straight huge game with 28 points and four 3-pointers against the Mavericks.

The last team to defeat Hutchinson before its current 10-game winning streak was Seward County.

The Blue Dragons look to even their season series with Seward County. The Saints defeated the Blue Dragons 70-57 on January 8 in Liberal. Hutchinson shot only 32.7 percent and had 27 turnovers against the Saints. Seward County, one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the KJCCC, hit nine 3-pointers. Sierra Lynch scored 24 points.

The Saints, who are in third place in the KJCCC, have won two games in a row with victories over Northwest Tech and Barton.

Wednesday's meeting between the Blue Dragons Saints will be the 98th all-time. Seward County holds a scant 49-48 all-time series lead over Hutchinson.

Ruth Marie Martinie, 73, of Hutchinson, died February 13, 2022, at her home. She was born February 7, 1949, in Hutchinson, to Richard J. and Mary (Urban) Webb Jr.

Ruth graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1967 and Hutchinson Community College in 1969. She lived in Arizona, where she raised her daughter, sold real estate, renovated homes and managed a winter visitor resort. Ruth returned to Hutchinson in her retirement to be closer to family. She was very active, and loved working outdoors. Ruth appreciated a good project and a hot cup of coffee. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, South Hutchinson.

Ruth is survived by: daughter, Abby Martinie of Oakland, California; son, Matt Souba (Trudy) of Wichita; grandchildren, Linkon and Dominik Souba, Olivier and Bijou Martinie; mother, Mary Webb of South Hutchinson; siblings, Richard Webb III of Walker, Catherine Hixon of Hutchinson, Patricia Best (Harlan) of Hutchinson, Barbara Webb of Oklahoma City, Fran Webb-Ronnau (Robert Ronnau) of Mesa, AZ, Christine Webb of Mesa, AZ, Rita Carpenter (Kris) of Colwich, Mary Walker (David Cunningham) of Kansas City, David Webb of South Hutchinson, Daniel Webb of South Hutchinson; and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her father; a sister, Vivian Sorenson; and nephews, Brian Sorensen and William Grimes.

Loran Eugene Arnold passed away at home, surrounded by his family on Monday, February 14, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Spring Hill, on August 6, 1929.&nbsp; He was one of seven children born to James and Lora Marie Arnold.&nbsp;

Loran grew up in Spring Hill and attended Shawnee Mission High School.&nbsp; Later, his family moved to Spivey, where he graduated from Spivey High School in 1947.&nbsp; After high school, Loran attended Hutchinson Junior College where he graduated in 1951.&nbsp;

While attending college, he met the love of his life, Betty Joan Darnell while they both worked at the Dillons Store at B and Main Street.&nbsp; They were married May 3, 1951, at Trinity Methodist Church, Hutchinson. Three months later, Loran was drafted and left for basic training at Fort Riley.&nbsp; In 1953, he returned from the Korean War and went back to work at Dillons.&nbsp;

Loran attended television school in Kansas City, and then started working at Crupper’s TV &amp; Appliance as a TV repairman.&nbsp; He then went to work for Lawson Appliance for the next three and half years.&nbsp; In January of 1967, Loran and Joan opened their own business, Arnolds’s TV.&nbsp; They operated the business for 36 years, until they retired in May 2003.&nbsp;

Loran became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in 1948.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was very active in the church and volunteered for several different events and activities over the years. &nbsp;While at Trinity, Loran and Joan helped start the Doers Class in 1957.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Loran is survived by:&nbsp; his wife of almost 71 years, Joan of Hutchinson; his three children, Dana (Pam) Arnold of Ozark, MO, Larry (Debbie) Arnold of Hutchinson, and Becki (Pat) Regan of Shawnee; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his sister, Eileen Galliart of Buhler.&nbsp;

Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. &nbsp;Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 17th&nbsp;and Main, Hutchinson.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.&nbsp; Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Elliott Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church.
