HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson company AgTrax, was recognized Tuesday by the Kansas Department of Commerce with a Merit Award Certificate for the South-Central region Business Appreciation Service category.

David Toland, Kansas Lieutenant Governor &amp; Secretary of Commerce, presented the Award to Michael Hinton, AgTrax Director of Sales &amp; Marketing, as part of the “To the Stars: Celebrating Kansas Businesses Appreciation Luncheon,” held at Butler Community College in Andover, KS. AgTrax was one of 29 businesses from the 14 county region acknowledged for its advanced technology software services and economic impact.

Lula Mae (Downen) Frey, born to Orvie and Gracie Downen February 19th, 1946 in Hutchinson, died April 18th, 2022 in Holton. Graduated Newton High School 1964 and attended York College. 

Married Ralph A Frey February 13th, 1971. Survived by husband, daughter Brenda Rziha (Jason) and son Eric Frey (Kelly) as well as grandchildren Dylan, Megan, Hailey, and Joshua. 

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday April 21, 2022 at Petersen Funeral Home with the family receving freinds from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Internment at Restlawn Cemetery.

McLaughlin and Henderson both homered in Game 1 as Hutchinson won the first game 9-4 over the Wildcats. Henderson hit a second home run and the Blue Dragons racked up 18 hits in a 17-5 six-inning rule-rule victory over the Wildcats in the second game.

The doubleheader with the Baker JV was a make-up of a canceled home game scheduled for Tuesday against NOC-End at Hobart-Detter Field.

The Blue Dragons are now 23-18 overall. Hutchinson returns to conference play on Thursday at Colby with the final two games of the four-game series with the Trojans on Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field.

GAME 1 RECAP McLaughlin led the Blue Dragons, going 2 for 4 with a double, home run and four RBIs. McLaughlin hit a three-run home run in a four-run fourth inning. He added an RBI double in a three-run seventh inning.

Henderson went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

HutchCC baseball sweeps Baker JV

NEWTON – Cold temperatures, wind and even a little sleet couldn’t stop the No. 4-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team from winning its third-straight Jayhawk Conference team championship on Tuesday at Sand Creek Station.

Hutchinson won the 2022 team championship with a 29-stroke victory over Garden City at the KJCCC Championship, the final of three league-designated tournaments. The league title was the 10th in team history.

The Blue Dragons won 2 of the 3 league-designated tournaments in 2022, scoring 27 team points to capture the team title. Dodge City was the conference runner-up with 24 points and Garden City was third with 22.5 points.

All-American Ben Partridge repeated as the KJCCC individual champion, winning the league title outright with 30.5 points. Partridge had one KJCCC tournament title with a runner-up and a fourth-place finish this season. Last season, Partridge shared the individual conference title with Charlie Crockett. A Blue Dragon golfer has won the KJCCC individual title for the third-straight year. Partridge is the 11th Blue Dragon to win or share a league individual season championship in program history.

Four Blue Dragons earned all-conference honors. Joining Partridge on the first team was All-American Harry Crockett, who was second in the standings with 25 points. Crockett won the individual title at Sand Creek Station by five strokes over Partridge. Freshman Blake Saffel was a second-team all-conference player and sophomore Addison Alonzo was on the honorable mention list.

&nbsp;The Blue Dragons posted a final-round 293 (5-over par) in tough scoring conditions to close the 54-hole tournament at 12-under 852. The Dragons had a 31-stroke lead after a second-round 272, the second-lowest team score on a par-72 course in team history.

Garden City finished second at Sand Creek station at 881. Dodge City was third at 885.

Crockett shot a final-round 73 on Tuesday and finished first in the final league tournament at 9-under 207. Partridge also shot a 73 and placed second in the tournament.

Saffel shot the low round for the Blue Dragons on Tuesday with a 2-under 70. Saffel finished seventh at 2-over 218.

Alonzo closed with a 78 on Tuesday, but still finished eighth at 5-over 221.

Freshman Dominic Clemons tied for 12th overall at 8-over 224 after a 75 on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons now look to defend its NJCAA District III/Region VI titles next Monday and Tuesday at Lochland Country Club in Hastings, Nebraska.

Dragons capture 3rd-straight league team championship

Ann R. Phillips, 73, passed away April 16, 2022, at Hospice House, Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She was born January 24, 1949, in Great Bend, to Virgil and Peggy (Milloway) Wilhelm.

Ann was a 1967 graduate of Otis-Bison High School, Otis, and went on to graduate from Salt City Business College, Hutchinson. Ann was employed by The Center for Counseling and Consultation, Great Bend, retiring in 2018 with over 35 years of service. She was a member of Journey Mennonite Church, South Hutchinson, Hutchinson Horticulture Club, and the Reno County Volunteer Center.

She enjoyed gardening, decorating and spending fun times with friends and family, including traveling and weekly card games with special friends. She was also skilled in grooming family and neighborhood dogs and had Starbucks at the top of her list for drinks that required a predefined and orchestrated method of drinking.&nbsp; She loved to attend grandchildrens’ activities, shopping and took joy in spending time outdoors whether on long walks or leisurely bike rides with Jim and their dog Parker.&nbsp; Ann cemented lifelong friendships with her co-workers who became like family during her career as a medical transcriptionist. After retirement, Ann wore many hats and volunteered at numerous places, including the Hutchinson Fox Theatre, Volunteer Center of Reno County Friends in Action program as well as the Etc. Shop where she had such fun times with her co- workers, the ‘Linen Sisters’. She was a lovable lady with a fun sense of humor who took pride in being ‘put together’ and having her home and workspace beautifully decorated in the holidays of each season. She always brightened any gathering with her happy smile and quick wit. Ann truly valued her ‘tight-knit’ neighborhood, church, and community that she lived and participated in and could be counted on to be a team player. If there was a need, she was there to support it. She thoroughly enjoyed her various activities, but her most treasured times were when she was with her family, especially her grandkids, with whom she got so much enjoyment from and showered them with love always. Of all the things that she accomplished in her life, her most cherished roles were wife, mother, grandma, daughter, sister, and friend.

On July 19, 1969, Ann married the love of her life, James Lee Phillips, in Larned, and that night watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. They shared over 52 beautiful years of marriage.

She is survived by: her husband, Jim Phillips of Hutchinson; daughter, Dana Darrah and husband Chad of Hutchinson; and daughter, Nicole Beatty and husband Chad of Lawrence; grandchildren, Lauren and Carter Darrah, and twins, Greyson and Liam Beatty; numerous nieces and nephews; and her lovable Westie, Parker.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Peggy Wilhelm, and brother, Duane Wilhelm.

A Celebration of Life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2022, at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, with Pastor Judy Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Partridge Cemetery, Partridge.&nbsp; Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2022, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.

NEWTON – Posting the second-best single round on a Par 72 course in team history on Monday afternoon, the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team built a 29-stroke lead after 36 holes of the 54-hole Jayhawk Conference Championship at Sand Creek Station.

The No 4-ranked Blue Dragons will look to clinch a third-straight Jayhawk Conference men’s golf championship in Tuesday’s final round, which will be a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start at Sand Creek Station.

The Blue Dragons posted rounds of 287 and 272 on Monday to shoot a 17-under 561 after 36 holes. Dodge City is second at 14-over 590. Garden City is third at 17-over 593.

Entering the Jayhawk Championship, Hutchinson and Dodge City were tied for the season conference lead with 15 points each.

The 272 team score in the second round on Monday was the second-best round on a Par-72 course in team history. Only the 270 team score posted at the 2020 NJCAA National Preview at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas, topped Monday’s second round.

All-Americans Harry Crockett and Ben Partridge shot rounds of 65 and 67, respectively, to lead the Blue Dragons in the second round. Sophomore Addison Alonzo and freshman Dominic Clemmons both carded 70s. Those four golfers combined for 20 birdies and only four bogeys in the second round.

Led by Crockett’s 69 in the first round on Monday, the Blue Dragons opened a 10-stroke lead over Dodge City after 18 holes.

All five Blue Dragon players are in the Top 10 of the individual standings through two rounds.

After shooting 10-under 134 on Monday, Crockett is the individual leader through 36 holes with a five-stroke lead on the field. Crockett had a 14 pars, one eagle, two birdies and a bogey in his opening-round 69. Dragons take Monday command at KJCCC Championship

Marilyn Jean Love Watkins, age 82, formerly of Hutchinson, passed away on April 13, 2022. She was born June 16, 1939, in Kansas City, Kansas, to Charles Porter Mallam and Earline Louise Nelson. Marilyn was adopted by Lester and Helen (Russom) Love, of Partridge, on September 1, 1939.

Marilyn graduated from Partridge High School, attended Hutchinson Community College, and graduated from Grace Hospital School of Nursing. She was employed as a Registered Nurse at Grace Hospital, The Medical Center, and Hutchinson Hospital for 45 years, retiring in July 2005.

Survivors include: sons, Douglas Buck and David Buck and wife Jami of Wichita; two granddaughters, Katelyn Williams (Zach) of Olathe and Kristin Pinango Buck (Luis Miguel) of Wichita; one great-grandson, Theo Williams; a birth brother, Gene Kern; birth sisters, Anita Kern Staley, Judy Mallam Smith, Mary Mallam Netherton, Ruth Mallam, and Kathy Mallam Fleck.

She was preceded in death by: her birth and adopted parents; birth brother, Dick Mallam; and birth sister, Nancy Gress.

Founded in 1959, the award is the most tenured honor handed out by the association. It is given to those - most often not an athlete - who have made significant contributions to two-year college athletics on a national level for an extended period of time. 

Cox has been instrumental in the success of the historic NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Tournament held in Hutchinson, KS, serving as an advocate for the best possible student-athlete and member college championship experience. Cox has been at the forefront of efforts to ensure ample team and fan lodging that are integral to the success of the tournament each year. She coordinates with the NJCAA in these efforts and is also on the Division I Men's Basketball Championship Marketing Committee. In addition to hosting the men's basketball championship in Hutchinson, Cox is also involved in the planning and execution of the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Championship Tournament and its many moving parts. Cox sees the value in the community of Hutchinson having a relationship between the thousands of student-athletes that compete for a championship each year.

Cox has been the Director of Visit Hutch since 2004 and assumed additional duties as Vice President of Operations and Tourism in January 2015. Previously, Cox spent four years as General Manager at a local hotel after having been with Visit Hutch for five years. She is on the Travel Industry Association of Kansas Board of Directors, serves as secretary on the executive committee, and also serves on various local boards and committees.&nbsp;

Visit Hutch's Cox wins NJCAA Award

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.
— Michaela Self has been hired to serve as the new Director for the Junction City Main Street program. She will begin work on April 25th. "But I'll be attending a couple of meetings they have next week, as well as introducing myself to everybody at the Main Street open house."

Self is a graduate of Texas State University where she earned a degree in Marketing and Public Relations. "All through college while I was getting my degree I worked at a Main Street program in San Marcos, Texas. While there she started in an internship position and worked&nbsp; her way up to the assistant position. "

She has spent the past year working as a project manager for U.S. Stone Industries, which is based in Herington. Self is originally from Hutchinson, KS and later lived in Galveston, Texas where she attended high school before attending Texas State University.

Ami L. (Snyder) Filler, 47, passed away unexpectedly,&nbsp; February 9, 2022 in Mesa, Arizona.&nbsp; Ami was born on September 8, 1974 on post at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the daughter of Sherry McNeil,&nbsp;Apex&nbsp;North Carolina&nbsp;&amp; Ric Snyder, Hutchinson.

Ami was an army child and attended primary school in Augsburg Germany.&nbsp; After her father was honorably discharged the family adventures took them to; Olathe; Charleston, West Virginia; Liberty, Missouri and then Charleston, S. Carolina, where Ami graduated from Middleton High School in 1992.&nbsp; Ami enjoyed a busy childhood filled with soccer, cheer leading and show choir. She enjoyed time at the beach and studying with friends.&nbsp; Ami attended Mid America Nazarene College, Olathe, Kansas and ultimately graduated from Phoenix Community College, Phoenix, Arizona with a degree in Occupational Therapy where she then began her career working with challenged kids in the Dysart High School, Arizona.

Ami and her former spouse Robert "Mark" Filler had three beautiful children who were the light of her life.&nbsp; Ami and Mark's marriage took them from Olathe, Dallas, Texas; Hutchinson, Lyons, and finally settling in Surprise, Arizona in 2007 to present.&nbsp;

She is survived by children; son, Jacob "Gabe" (Taelor) Filler; daughters, Sidney Filler and Julianna Filler all of Surprise Arizona.

Kan. — Dr. Mohammed Al-Halawani, MD with Hutchinson Pulmonology Associates located within Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, has been named a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP).

"Dr. Al-Halawani and his partner, Dr. Musa are doing just fantastic things at the hospital," said Chuck Welch with Hutchinson Regional. "I credit them with saving literally hundreds of lives during this COVID pandemic."

Dr. Al-Halawani is board certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine.

"That's for distinguishment in serving his community, as well as the practice of chest medicine," Welch said. "That's a very, very profound distinction."

Dr. Al-Halawani is looking forward to collaborating with other chest physicians that are part of the fellowship.

“This designation will provide an opportunity to visit one on one with contemporaries throughout the nation to research better ways for us all to treat our patients," Dr. Al-Halawani said in a release. "It will allow me to expand my network, nationally and internationally; continue developing professionally and be a leader in the field of chest medicine, as well as help my practice grow clinically and academically, allowing me to provide the best patient care possible and make full use of new treatments on the drawing boards."

Dr. Al-Halawani completed his Pulmonary and Critical Care training at the State University of New York; and Sleep Medicine training at Yale University.

The HutchCC Board of Trustees will discuss a revised visitors policy for the campus as part of their meeting on Thursday.

The main thrust of the new policy is to be sure that children are properly supervised when on campus and that employees do not bring children to campus if they are too ill to go to school. Also, the policy outlines that only those who have reason to be there (students or college employees) should be in classrooms as much as possible, and in addition, visitors in offices or workplaces should conform to office norms. The policy gives those in charge in classrooms and offices the right to ask disruptive persons to leave.

The Board will also look over an updated academic honesty policy that includes definitions for cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, dissimulation, forgery and sabotage.

The Board will also look over job descriptions for an Assistant Director of Admissions and a Campus Visit Coordinator.

The meeting will begin Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Justice Theater in the Shears Technology Center.

Elizabeth “Ann” Day, 78, passed away April 7, 2022, at Hospice House. She was born July 23, 1943, in Scott City, to Raymond A. and Juanita P. (Piros) Frank.

Ann graduated from Hutchinson High School and Peel’s Beauty College. She was a city kid who quickly adapted to farm life and no one outworked her. From sun up to sun down, Ann happily made sure everyone’s needs were taken care of, often neglecting her own. She loved quilting and gardening and was the glue that held the family together. Spring was Ann’s favorite time of the year because it meant she could go play in the dirt. Everything Ann created with her strong hands turned into a masterpiece. It gave her great joy to teach her great-grandchildren some of her rare talents. Ann was a life-time member of DDR, a unique organization devoted to the preservation of America’s great Western heritage.

On August 23, 1968, she married Russell E. “Russ” Day, in McPherson. They shared nearly 49 years of marriage before his death on August 9, 2017.

Ann is survived by: her daughters, Robin Fitzgerald (Tony McClelland) of McPherson; Brenda McLaughlin (Donny) of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Jimmy Rue, Ryan Oxley (Nicole), Amanda Oxley, Leah Milner, Trevor Milner; and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; son, Peter Day; and sister, Nickie Saunders.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2022, at Elliott Chapel. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Following the service, the family invites everyone to join them for a meal at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Arlington United Methodist Church.

Linda Jane Algrim, 79, of Hutchinson, died April 4, 2022, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born November 25, 1942, in Stafford, to Leonard and Marie (West) Ellis.

Linda graduated from Rolla High School in 1960, and then attended Adela Hale Business College. She worked in the Reno County Courthouse as a secretary for public works. Linda enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, and playing card games. More than anything she loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

On February 12, 1961, she married Alfred Morris Algrim, in Hutchinson. He passed away on November 21, 2005.

Linda is survived by: daughter, Lori Sanchez (George), Littleton, Colorado; sons, Gary Algrim (Lori), Nickerson, Clint Algrim (Kristina), Bella Vista, Arkansas; grandchildren, Tyler Algrim (Kim), Sara McGray (John), Ashley Clifford (Jason), Chase Algrim (Jessica), Amanda Mancillas (David), Matthew Sanchez (Alyssa), Kaisha O’Riordan, Kelsie O’Riordan, Kaneesha O’Riordan, Kassidy O’Riordan; 22 great-grandchildren; sister, Myrna Jones (Jim); and brothers, David Ellis (Chris), Gus Ellis (JoAnn), Mick Ellis (Sherry).

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) will once again host student signing day. This year's event is scheduled for Thursday, May 12.&nbsp;

“Signing day is an opportunity to recognize students that are entering into training programs . . . as well as our Hutchinson Community College training programs,” Director Travis Rebel said.

With the close connection to vocational programs at Hutchinson Community College this year, the event is moving from the HCTEA to the Stringer Fine Arts Center.

“The change this year to move it to the Stringer Fine Arts is to include students that are entering into career and technical education fields at Hutchinson Community College,” Rebel said. “So this year's signing day will be an expansion of what we’ve done in the past.”

The event is a continuation of the efforts by both the academy and the college to build up a workforce for area business and the medical field.

“We certainly feel a responsibility to help our area business and industry partners and help fill the needed workforce,” Rebel said. “We have an active advisory committee in the programs, we have interview days on campus, and we really work with our business partners to both support the needs of our students and the industries which we represent.”

Students will be recognized in the fields of automotive mechanics technology, automotive collision repair, machine technology, welding, and both CNA and CMA nursing programs. In addition to signing day, the event will include recognition of area sixth graders who are currently participating in the Chamber of Commerce Career Quest program.&nbsp;

Career and Technical Education Academy ready for signing day

Lori Ann Swanson, 64, of Mcpherson, passed away at 8am, Tuesday, April 5th, suddenly, at her home. Lori was born in McPherson, on October 17, 1957, a daughter of Doris Elaine (Spradlin) and Carl Wallace Swanson. Lori attended Santa Fe Country School, McPherson Junior High and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, in 1975. She then attended and graduated from Hutchinson Community College, Hutchinson. Lori was blessed with the birth of a son, Adam Christopher in January of 1985. Through the years Lori worked as a X-Ray Technician for the Medicine Lodge Hospital, Medicine Lodge, Moberly Hospital, Moberly, Missouri, Hertzler Clinic, Halstead, and Hutchinson Clinic, Hutchinson. Lori enjoyed hanging out with her friends, watching the football games especially the Kansas City Chief's, helping friends out, and spending time with family. She loved delivering meals for Meals on Wheels and helping friends get to their appointments, fried chicken and French Silk Pie. Lori really enjoyed her dog's and cat's and caring for strays. Lori had a strong faith in her God. She is survived by her son, Adam Swanson, of McPherson, Kansas; her mother Doris Swanson, of McPherson; her brother, Dale Swanson and wife Kris Swanson, of McPherson; her nieces, Karin Krehbiel and husband Jay, of McPherson, and Leslie Lyman and husband Justin, of Overland Park; other relatives and a host of friends. Lori was preceded in death by her father, Carl W. Swanson. A Celebration of Life Come and Go will be held from 2 pm to 4 pm, on Saturday, April 16th, 2022 at Glidden - Ediger Chapel in McPherson.

Theodore Calvin Ronen, better known as Ted, 86, Hutchinson KS, died on April 4, 2022, at Hospice House.

He was born July 29, 1935, in Wichita, to William Loren and Marie Olivette (Weihe) Ronen.&nbsp; He grew up in Kansas and was a graduate of St. John High School in 1953.&nbsp; He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College (currently Emporia State University)&nbsp;with a degree in business administration/marketing in 1957.&nbsp; While in college, he played junior varsity basketball for two years and was a member of the men’s chorale and glee club.&nbsp;

Ted married Adele Marie Wilkens on December 28, 1955, when he was a junior at KSTC, Emporia.

Ted was co-owner of Meade Mfg. in Meade.&nbsp; He later started his own business in Meade, The Ronen Agency, which served the public in insurance, real estate, and securities. &nbsp;Most recently, after moving to Hutchinson, he was a real estate broker (aka The Cookie Man) for Coldwell Banker Americana from 1991 until his retirement in 2012.

In Meade, he was a member of Lions Club, a member of the school board for 8 years, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and he served on the City Council for several years.&nbsp; He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.&nbsp; He was in a bowling league and played on the men’s softball team.&nbsp; He coached his young sons’ baseball and basketball teams.&nbsp; Ted’s greatest interest/hobby was cars—especially Fords.&nbsp; He also enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Adele, of Hutchinson; 4 children, Pamela Jo Gillen (Bob) of McPherson, Michael Ronen (Lisa) of Kechi, Jack Ronen (Vonda) of Wichita, and Jeffrey Ronen (Michelle) of Wichita; 2 brothers, Jim Ronen (Cibyl) of Henderson TN, and Bill Ronen (Peggy) of Bosque Farms NM; 1 sister, Heidi Goodman (Gerald) of Hutchinson; 10 grandchildren, Kelsey Smyth, Valerie Bryant (Scott), Amanda Harmon (Chad), Rebecca Walenz (Sam), Kyle Ronen (Lauren), Kirk Ronen, Derek Ronen, Christopher Ronen (Taylor), Kevin Ronen, and Casie Taylor (David); 3 step-grandchildren, Seth Blehm, Avery McCulloch, and Mackenzie McCulloch; 10 great-grandchildren, Anderson Bryant, Connor Bryant, Alice Bryant, Collin Harmon, Grace Harmon, Jonah Walenz, Brantley Ronen, Jackson Ronen, Kendall Ronen, and Chandler Ronen; and 1 step-great-grandchild, Bryleigh Godfrey.&nbsp; Ted was predeceased by a great-granddaughter, Olivia Walenz.

HutchCC hosting job fair Thursday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Chapter of the NAACP will hold its monthly meeting Thursday evening.

The guest speaker will be Hutchinson Human Relations Officer Dave Sotello, who will speak about entrepreneurial opportunities for minorities and what can be done to bolster those opportunities.

Thursday's meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Nunemaker Room of the Parker Student Union on the Hutchinson Community College campus.

NAACP meeting Thursday in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The latest installment of the Dillon Lecture Series will feature NASA astronaut and Kansas native Nick Hague. Hague’s presentation begins at 10:30 Tuesday morning at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The lecture is open to the public. Cost to attend the lecture is only $10, with students admitted free.

Hague was born in Belleville, KS and graduated from Hoxie High School in 1994. He was selected by NASA as an astronaut in 2013. The Kansas native earned a Bachelor of Science in Astronautical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy in 1998, and a Master of Science in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000.

In 2009, Hague was selected for the Air Force Fellows program in Washington, D.C., and was a staff member in the United States Senate. Hague most recently served as Flight Engineer on the International Space Station for Expedition 59 and 60.&nbsp;

The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team exploded for two huge innings on Friday at Fun Valley to earn a sixth-straight Jayhawk Conference sweep.

First-place Hutchinson broke open a tied game with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat third-place Seward County 8-2 in the opening game on Friday. The Dragons then tied a season high with nine runs in the fourth inning to complete the sweep of the Saints 12-3 in five innings.

The Blue Dragons extended their winning streak to 12 games, which matches a 2016 winning streak for the fourth-longest win streak in program history. The Dragons improved to 24-4 overall and 15-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. The Saints have now lost six games in a row and fell to 17-11 overall and 8-4 in the KJCCC. Hutchinson travels to Colby for a KJCCC doubleheader on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons trailed 1-0 in the fifth inning and tied the game with a Madison Grimes’ double high off the left-center field wall to score Haley Miller.

The tie was broken one inning later when Allie Stipsits led off the inning with a long home run to left field for a 2-1 lead. That broke the Dragon offense loose. Held to just two hits over the first four innings, Hutchinson tallied 11 hits in its final two at-bats.

Leading 3-1 after pinch-runner Lexi Pitcher scored on a bad Saints’ throw, Miller ripped an RBI triple to center, Grimes drove in a run through the right side and Natalie Bevan doubled in a run to make it 6-2. Riley Wertz then capped the big inning with a two-run home run to left for an 8-1 lead.

Ella Dougherty, Miller, Grimes, Stipsits and Aspen Goetz all had two hits each for the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson out-hit Seward County 13-5. Seward leadoff hitter Paris Brieneese was 4 for 4 with a triple to lead Seward County.

Wertz improved to 9-0 in the pitching circle pitching the final two innings. Wertz had three strikeouts, but allowed an unearned run and two walks, but no hits. Emily Munson received a no-decision after five strong innings. Munson allowed four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and three walks.

Madison Pack and Beth Denny hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the fourth inning and help Seward County tie the Blue Dragons at 3-all.

The Blue Dragons immediately jumped on several Saints’ mistakes in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead. Hutchinson immediately regained the lead after leadoff hitter Dougherty walked, moved to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a while pitch and scored on a Miller sacrifice fly for a 4-3 lead. Grimes then walked and then Bevan skied a fly ball to right field that was dropped, which opened the flood gates for the Dragons.

Carley Sterneker laced a two-run triple down the right-field line. Goetz also delivered a two-run double, Dougherty had a sacrifice play and Grimes ripped a two-run double to right center to complete a nine-run inning for a 12-3 lead.

The nine-run inning tied the nine-run second inning against the Ottawa University JV on Opening Day on January 29.

Miller went 3 for 3 with a run scored, RBI and stolen base to lead the Blue Dragons’ 13-hit attack. This was Miller’s fifth three-hit game of the season.

Sterneker was 2 for 3 with a double, triple and three RBIs. Goetz had a pair of doubles in a 2 for 2 game. She scored two runs and had three RBIs. Easton Swanson went 2 for 3 as well.

Sadie Loney (5-3) earned the pitching win in relief. Loney gave up a home run to the first batter she faced, but then retired 6 of the final 7 batters she faced. Kiersten Weitze worked the first three innings and struck out four.

Dragon softball win streak now twelve

Sophomore Ben McLaughlin extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to nine games in dramatic fashion on Friday with a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Hutchinson Community College baseball team to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Seward County in the opening of a four-game Jayhawk West series at Hobart-Detter Field.

McLaughlin made it 10 games in a row while Bryce Logan and Daniel Beebe drove in three runs each to defeat Seward County 10-8 in Game 2, taking a 2-0 series lead over the Saints.

Games 3 and 4 will be at Brent Gould Field in Liberal at 1 and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Pinch-hitter P.J. Loucks and leadoff hitter Bryce Logan walked to load the bases with two outs. The Blue Dragons tied the game when Jack Torosian was hit with a pitch to plate pinch-runner Carter Booe with the tying run.McLaughlin then completed the comeback by lacing a 1-0 pitch up the middle to score Loucks with the game-winning run and giving the Blue Dragons their first walkoff win of the season.The Blue Dragons missed a scoring chance in the sixth after loading the bases with a hit batter, error and walk, but the Dragons couldn’t scratch across a run. Hutchinson left eight runners on base.Sophomore Jack Whitlock twirled the first Blue Dragon complete game of the season and improved to 4-1 for the season.After allowing an unearned run in the first inning, Whitlock tossed six shutout innings with only two Seward County baserunners reaching second base.Whitlock struck out seven while allowing five hits, only three after the first inning, with two walks. Whitlock issued a one-out walk in the sixth to Jacob Masters, but picked him off of first base.Seward County’s Martinez struck out nine in 6 2-3 innings. He walked three, hit three Blue Dragons and had two wild pitches.GAME 2 RECAPThe Blue Dragons broke a 5-all tie after seven innings with a five-run eighth and then had to hold off the Saints in a two-run victory in the nightcap on Friday.Bolstered by two errors on sacrifice bunt attempts that loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, Beebe scored a pair with a single to left-center that scored Sterling Sutcliffe and Hunter Gotreaux. Logan added a two-run single to plate Loucks and Beebe for a 9-5 lead. Logan then scored on a McLaughlin sacrifice fly to right to complete a five-run eighth inning and take a 10-5 lead to the ninth.The first five Seward County batters in the ninth reached base and three scored as Reed Scott retired the only three batters he faced to claim his third save of the season and make Kaden Wickersham (2-1) the winning pitcher.The Dragons led 5-4 after three innings. Trailing 4-3 in the third, the Dragons reclaimed the lead at 5-4 with RBI singles from Gotreaux and Beebe. The Saints tied the game in the fifth with a Masters’ solo home run.Logan had a career-high three points and tied a career high with three RBIs. Logan was 3 for 5 with a run scored.Beebe tied a career high for hits, going 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.Torosian was 2 for 5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Gotreaux went 2 for 3 with three stolen bases. Gotreaux stole all three bases in the same inning, the second inning.The Dragons out-hit Seward County 14-10.
