New Kansas State University President Dr. Richard H. Linton was in Hutchinson at the Encampment Building on the Kansas State Fairgrounds Thursday for a listening and learning town hall with the K-State Alumni Association.

"I think we have a great relationship with the community and also a great relationship with the community college," Linton said Thursday. "It's all about finding a way to help in higher education, to be able to help provide an opportunity for youth to be able to get a college degree. A big part of my visit here in Hutchinson is to be able to talk with the community college and understand how we can help them grow, how they can help us grow and how we can collaboratively work together."

Linton has spent his entire career in land grant institutions, and that is by design.

"Thirty eight years in the land grant system," Linton said. "Nine as a student at Virginia Tech getting all three degrees and then 29 years at Purdue University, The Ohio State University and N.C. State University. When I was looking and considering a President's position, it had to be a foundational land grant. There's not many foundational land grants that still believe in research, teaching, extension and outreach for the benefits of the citizens of the state. K-State's one of the few. I had worked on a number of projects 15 years ago and always valued the family feel, the authenticity, the genuine nature of the people. People in this state are so passionate about the land grant. It's a great place to be President and I'm looking at trying to do everything I can to move this university forward."

Linton knows that one area where K-State is going to be able to provide unparallelled opportunity to its students and faculty is in animal science, once the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility is fully commissioned.

"It puts us best in the world," Linton said. "It's the only facility in the United States, only one of five in the world that's BSL Level 4 for food animals. I think, when you have something that puts you best in the world in a partnership with USDA ARS, we need to be thinking about everything that we can do to be able to build upon it, to be able to make it greater. Already, we're seeing some of the benefits. Just recently, over the last couple of months, we had the biggest economic development announcement in the history of Manhattan, with Scorpion Biologics coming and providing a $650 million investment in human vaccines. We're hoping to be able to build that private-public partnership and to be able to grow what we do for the food animal industry here in Kansas, with national and global impacts."

Linton is the 15th president of Kansas State University.

In Loving Memory of Carla Cavin: August 24th, 1952 – June 21, 2022 Carla Faye Cavin passed away peacefully in her home on June 21, 2022, in the presence of her loving husband, son, family and friends. Carla was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on August 24th, 1952, to parents Carl and Donna Vincent. She attended Buhler High School and Hutchinson Community College. On November 24th, 1979, she, along with her sons BJ and Mikey, were joined in marriage to Don Cavin and they settled in as a family in Dewey, OK. For 29 years, Carla worked as a staff support specialist and bus driver for the Dewey School system where she enjoyed her time with both kids and staff. She also managed the books for the family business. Carla also enjoyed working in the yard, mowing and tending to plants and flowers. She was an avid sports fan and tireless supporter of her two favorite teams - the Dewey Bulldoggers and OSU Cowboys. Carla fought a courageous battle for breath with COPD that in the end limited her mobility and diminished her physical capabilities but was unable to diminish her outlook on life and love for family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Donna, her oldest son BJ, parents-in law Bill and Lois and sister-in law Gayle. She is survived by her husband Don Cavin, son Mikey Cavin, brothers Ron Vincent and Don Miller and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and uncles. The family is very appreciative of the end-of-life care and support provided by Compassus and the tireless care provided by Becky Vincent and our special friend, Judy Sanders. A celebration of life and remembrance will be held at the Dewey High School Auditorium, Saturday, June 25th at 11:00 am, casual attire is expected. The family requests that in leu of flowers, donations can be made to Dewey High School Athletic Department or the Dewey Fire Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Hutchinson Community College sophomore third baseman Ben McLaughlin capped off a tremendous 2022 season on Wednesday after earning an NJCAA ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove award.

The Gold Glove award capped an impressive list of postseason awards for the sophomore from Golden, Colorado. McLaughlin was also named second-team NJCAA All-American as well as first-team All-Jayhawk West, first-team All-Region VI and the Region VI Defensive Player of the Year.

McLaughlin is the fourth Blue Dragon in program history to earn a national Gold Glove. Others are Shane Cooper (shortstop) in 2017, Michael Helman (2nd base) in 2016 and Bennett Oliver (third base) in 2014.

McLaughlin started the 2022 season at first base and then moved to third base on March 24.

He committed no errors at third base over the final 32 games of the regular season and had just two errors at the hot corner all season long.

McLaughlin fielded .986 this season with only three errors in 222 fielding chances this season.

McLaughlin is the only Jayhawk Conference player to earn a national Gold Glove.

The future Arkansas Razorback also had a huge offensive season for the Blue Dragons in 2022.

McLaughlin was Hutchinson’s leading hitter with a .411 batting average (88 of 214). He hit 19 home runs and had 83 RBIs. He also had 23 doubles and posted a .511 on-base percentage with team highs of 34 walks and 13 hit-by-pitches.

McLaughlin ranked third in RBIs, tied for fourth in home runs, fourth in hits, tied for second in doubles and is tied for ninth in runs score in Blue Dragon single-season history.

In conference games this season, McLaughlin hit .431 with 10 home runs, 13 doubles, 50 total hits and 39 RBIs with 23 walks. He fielded .991 in 32 KJCCC games this season.

McLaughlin wins Gold Glove

New Haven USD 312 Superintendent Craig Idacavage is excited for the challenge of leading a district after 17 years as an elementary principal, but he understands that the educational recovery from the COVID-19 years is continuing.

"I don't think we're done seeing the impact of it," Idacavage said. "I think we're going to be cleaning this up for a couple years now, as we get back into, 'the old normal', I guess. It was a rough two years. I was fortunate enough to work with some good people that showed up every day and worked hard for kids and so, we were able to make it through it."

Idacavage is a Caldwell, Kansas native and a Southwestern College grad and wanted to get his family back to this part of the state. He had a chance to do a little chatting with some students recently.

"I stopped for coffee in Haven two weeks ago when I was in town for a meeting," Idacavage said. "A couple high school kids were working behind the counter. They didn't even know who I was. I just asked them what their favorite part about the schools were. They just said the people. Not only the adults, but the kids, how they help each other out. They get along. They may not all be friends, but they're not cliquey and all those things and just the respect the kids receive from the adults in the building."

He is happy with what he's seen in the district so far and doesn't intend to make major changes, as what they are doing seems to be working.

"I wouldn't say I'm nervous about the work that is going to come down the line," Idacavage said. "There's good people in Haven that are in places to help me be successful. I think that when you want to be successful and there are people that want to help you, it's really, really hard to fail."

Idacavage has two children. His daughter will be a freshman and his son a 7th grader in Haven.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department will host the 3rd Annual Bridgebuilder's BBQ. This year's event will be held on Thursday, July 14 starting at 6 p.m. at the Rice Park Community Building at 44 Swarens.&nbsp;

The event is designed to bridge the gap between Hutchinson youth and Hutchinson Police Officers. There will be a BBQ dinner along with other refreshments. The event also includes games, a dunk tank and the HPD drone team. K-9 officer Stitch will also be on hand.

The event is being co-sponsored by Hutch in Harmony and the youth and college members of the Hutchinson NAACP and the Hutchinson Police Department.

Bridgebuilders event set for July 14 in Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Negotiations continue between Hutchinson Community College and its staff and employees on a new contract for next year.

So far, both sides have met four times with most of the discussion surrounding language items. But the two sides also disagree on a salary increase for employees. The employees are asking for a 7% pay increase across the board. The school has countered with 5%, which has been pretty much the standard for state colleges and universities this year, according to HutchCC President Dr. Carter File.

The 5% increase alone would add about $1 million to the budget, according to File. The two sides will meet Thursday afternoon before the regular board of trustees meeting. File will give the board an update on negotiations in executive session, but no action will be taken during the meeting.

Contract negotiations between HutchCC and employees continue

John Benjamin Wearing passed away peacefully on June 18, 2022, with his wife and sons by his side.

Ben was born March 2, 1953, in Salina, Kansas, to Paul and Verna Wearing. He was a graduate of Salina Central, Hutchinson Community College and Kansas State University. (EMAW, baby!)

Ben was a true news junkie. His newspaper career spanned more than 3 decades. He worked at weekly papers in Arkansas and Oklahoma before returning to his hometown to become the police beat reporter at the Salina Journal. There he worked for nearly 30 years, retiring in 2015 as the Executive Editor. During his time at the Journal, Ben was dedicated to making the daily paper accurate, interesting, and relevant to his readers. He was a natural journalist, curious and doggedly dedicated to getting the story right. As an editor, he was picky about the facts and the writing. He mentored many young reporters and students, some of whom remained in touch for years. His columns entertained readers; his editorials made them think. Many of his colleagues at the Journal became life-long friends.

Following his retirement, Ben spent even more time riding his beloved bicycles, cutting firewood, and taking over the kitchen.

Ben loved to cook and particularly to bake. His pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and most of all his cheesecakes were enjoyed by friends, family and colleagues for decades.&nbsp; Three bylines on page one earned a cheesecake.

As a journalist, Ben was cautious about getting overly involved with local organizations, wanting to avoid any appearance of conflict of interest. Once retired, he joined the AMBUCS at the urging of a friend and found a home with the ramp building crew. The service project combined his love of physical labor with his love of helping others.

In 1985 Ben and Betsy Green went on a lunch date. Two days later they went to dinner and talked until the restaurant closed. A year later they were engaged. They were married three months after that, on October 10, 1987. Theirs was a true love affair. He was her strongest supporter, helpmate and best friend. He was a thoughtful gift giver and frequently bought flowers, “just because.” &nbsp;Together they raised three sons that were the light of Ben’s life. When they were children, Ben wrestled and played with them, read them stories and taught them to work hard. &nbsp;As they became young adults, he listened to them, counseled them when asked, and encouraged them to pursue their dreams.

Ben enjoyed going on walks, visiting with neighbors chatting about cool cars or bikes. He was a loving dog parent and when walking his own pups, carried treats in his pocket for the neighborhood dogs. &nbsp;He was the guy who mowed a neighbor’s lawn, shoveled the sidewalk, or stopped by with a chainsaw to help with a downed limb.

Ben and Betsy loved to travel – alone, with friends, and mostly with their sons. &nbsp;In particular, he was always up for a trip to the Mountains. Ben loved spending time with his siblings. He also loved Betsy’s family and they often traveled to spend time with them. After he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2014, Ben and Betsy were determined not to let cancer dictate their lives. They did not waste a minute of the time they had left.

Ben is survived by his wife, Betsy, sons James, Bob, and Christopher; a sister, Debbie Bengtson (Ken), brothers Gary (Lorrie), Steve (Vickie), Mike (Jan), and Pat; a sister-in-law, Judy Wearing, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Joe; and a sister-in-law, Ellen.

Ben was a tremendous husband, father, brother, and friend.&nbsp; He had a great sense of humor, was patient, never judgmental and seldom displayed anger. He was a workout fanatic, a grammar expert and had great legs.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 1:30 at the chapel at Webster Conference Center,&nbsp;2601 N. Ohio, in&nbsp;Salina.

Memorials to honor him can go to the Salina Breakfast Bandits AMBUCS for the ramp building project (P.O. 1952, Salina, KS 67402-1952) or to the Tammy Walker Cancer Center (c/o Salina Regional Health Foundation,&nbsp;P.O. Box 618, Salina, KS 67402-0618).

Delores Laverne “Sis” (Smith) Cook, 89,&nbsp;passed&nbsp;away Sunday, June 19, 2022.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was born October 4, 1932 in Optima, Oklahoma to Ethel (Whaley) and Howard Smith.&nbsp;&nbsp; Delores graduated from Guymon High School, Guymon, Oklahoma in 1951 and moved to Hutchinson to attend Salt City Business College.&nbsp;&nbsp;After graduation, she worked at Far-Mar-Co, Baize and Son Jewelers, and Union National Bank, where she received the President’s Customer Service Award.&nbsp;&nbsp;She retired from Commerce Bank in 1994.&nbsp;&nbsp; Delores married Eual E. Cook on September 1, 1957.&nbsp;&nbsp;They were married for 42 years until his death.&nbsp;&nbsp; Delores was a member of the Uvedale Chapter of the DAR in Hutchinson and attended First Church of God.&nbsp;&nbsp;Delores was an avid reader, spent many hours pursuing her interest in genealogy, and enjoyed playing dominoes with friends.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, Lawrence Smith and Fay Smith, and an infant sister.&nbsp;&nbsp;Survivors include her daughter Jennifer R. Performances are back at Hutchinson's Historic Fox Theatre this year for all four concerts. You can also purchase tickets there during regular box office hours. Individual tickets will go on sale in August.

Hutchinson Symphony announces upcoming season

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees will have a special meeting to clean up paperwork prior to the end of the school's fiscal year on Thursday.

Fiscal year end payments for the school are on the agenda. 

Also to be considered are resignations of an assistant football coach and an instructional technologist and the early retirement of the EMS Lab Assistant Coordinator. 

The board will deal with the disposal of outdated equipment that cannot be fixed, as well.

Items of fiscal action include a contract with Underscore Higher Ed to be the Customer Relationship Management consultant for the Slate admissions and enrollment management, student success, and alumni/advancement computer program at a cost of $45,000 and the replacement of 10 computers and 7 monitors for the Media Communications program located in Bldg 12 with Underground Vaults and Storage at a cost of $39,005.70.

The meeting begins Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Justice Theater of the Shears Technology Center at Hutchinson Community College at 1300 North Plum.

Hutchinson Police promoted three officers to Sergeant on Friday, James Sanders, Cory Schmidt and Wesley Vaughn. Their bios have been posted below.

Sergeant Sanders joined the Hutchinson Police Department in 2014 after serving in the Marines. Sergeant Sanders was assigned as a patrol officer and was selected as a Sniper on the Emergency Response Team in 2016. In 2018, Sergeant Sanders was selected as the Department's first K9 Handler and currently serves with K9 Tank. Sergeant Sanders currently is the ERT team leader and K9 coordinator. 

Sergeant Schmidt graduated from Friends University with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology and Pre-Law. He began his Career in Law Enforcement with the Hutchinson Police Department in 2015. Since then, he has served as a Field Training Officer, an instructor for numerous classes, a Sniper on the Emergency Response Team, a Master Police Officer, and a K9 Officer with K9 Nika. 

Sergeant Vaughn was born and raised in Sterling, Kansas. He  attended college at the University of Michigan before returning home to Kansas to pursue a career in law enforcement. Sergeant Vaughn served at the Reno County Sheriff’s Office for 15 years before transitioning and serving with HPD for the last three years. Sergeant Vaughn was awarded the title of Master Police Officer earlier this year, and continues to strive for excellence in his roles as a Field Training Officer, Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Investigator, and a Crisis Negotiator.

Three promoted to Sergeant for HPD

The Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports are presented by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers and the Kansas Grain and Feed Association.

Kansas farm families spent Father’s Day weekend in the combine, a wheat harvest tradition. Hot, dry, windy weather signaled the continued rapid progression of harvest across the state. Some south-central Kansas producers have sunny harvest results to share while empathizing with farmers elsewhere that did not catch the same beneficial rains throughout the growing season. No matter the final yield or the holiday, farm families are working together to maximize the 2022 Kansas wheat crop.

James Mosiman had his Arizona landlord in the combine with him when Kansas Wheat staff stopped by the harvest field near Walton in Harvey County. Harvest results are good with yields at 53 to 78 bushels per acre, 14 percent moisture and test weights heavy at 61 to 62 pounds per bushel.

In the next field, son Justin was running the air-seeder to plant double-crop soybeans into the wheat stubble. The cutting and planting crew were joined by a load of kids from Boulder and Kansas City and their grandfather, all of whom piled out and climbed into the cab. The grandfather remarked the field trip helped his grandkids see where their bread comes from, yet another family harvest tradition.

In the same area near Walton, the Nuss family, alongside Troy Smith, worked together this weekend to get wheat in Harvey County harvested and straw baled for Smith’s cattle. The operation delivers straight to Ardent Mills in nearby Newton, making growing quality wheat a priority.

Harvest results thus far are strong with yields at 70 bushels per acre, moisture at 11.2 to 14 percent, test weights heavy at 62 to 63 pounds per bushel and protein at 10.5 to 12 percent.

Back in February - after an excruciating Kansas City Chiefs game - the family went and tinkered with a 1968 Case 660 combine sitting in the treeline. After taking out their frustration, they got it started. Motivated, they restored the machine to running condition, driving to southwestern Missouri to pick up parts from a collector happy to see them used. After sitting idle for close to 30 years, the old Case combine returned to the harvest field for a few passes.

Bonding over machinery and splitting up harvest and fieldwork responsibilities is a common theme in June. From the first day of harvest on Friday, Koby Royer, a senior at Kansas State University, was operating the combine while his older brother Alek&nbsp;ran the grain truck to and from the elevator. Koby helps out on the family operation in Yoder, Royer Farms, while working an internship in nearby Hutchinson.

Their morale is high, thanks to results from fields like the one they were custom-cutting in Reno County on Friday - 50 bushels per acre, 64.5 pounds per bushel test weight and 13 percent protein. The brothers are thankful for the moisture they received but empathize with farmers further west that did not see the rain when needed.

Hayden Peirce&nbsp;is also balancing helping out on the family farm near Castelton and working a summer internship. Starting work at six in the morning in town, he can finish up responsibilities as an intern before hopping into the combine mid-afternoon. Peirce is also a college senior, pursuing a degree in biological agricultural engineering from Kansas State University.

Using the protein testing in the cab, Peirce is seeing high protein, ranging from 11 to 16 percent. Moisture is dry - 10 to 13 percent - and test weights are above 60 pounds per bushel. Yields are coming in the 40’s and 50’s bushels per acre. He praised the variety KS Hatchett, from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, for its drought tolerance, which was put to the ultimate test this year. He compared harvest results to Zenda, also from the Kansas Wheat Alliance, and Hatchett outperformed it.

Harvest is truly a family affair with Peirce running the combine while his cousins man the grain cart and semi and his oldest brother operates the planter - all pivotal pieces to getting all farm work done in June.

Harvest in full swing in Reno, Harvey counties

A Hutchinson non-profit is helping facilitate a Juneteenth Celebration here in the Salt City this weekend.

"H.E.E.L.O. Inc is the Hutchinson Empowerment Engagement Leadership Organization," said founder Shontina Tipton. "I'm a native of Hutchinson and I'd been gone for some time. I came back to start a nonprofit. It's a nonprofit to work with the youth in the community. The nonprofit was already in conception about a year ago. It just kind of kicked of during Juneteenth celebration weekend. With H.E.E.L.O., we're going to be working with the youth. We've got several programs we're going to be working with. We've got a Stars and Stripes STEM program that we will be working with 4th to 12th graders, we have a Woodson principal's care to curriculum program, working K-12. We also started the Edward L. Tipton minority scholarship at Hutchinson Community College in honor of my father, Edward Tipton."

The events started Thursday with a talent show put on by the NAACP Youth, and there was a blood drive Friday at Stringer Fine Arts Center at HutchCC. 

There is also a dominoes and spades tournament at Rice Park Community Center Friday night and a pancake feed Saturday morning at the DCI parking lot, along with a Juneteenth Feature Movie, You People that will be shown at the Fox Theatre starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. The movie's creative leader, Laron Chapman will be there.

"He was born and raised here in Hutchinson, as well," Tipton said. "He left to pursue the movie industry and got an education from Oklahoma State University and he went on to make several movies."

According to the IMDb summary of the film, written by Chapman, "You People" is a satirical comedy about modern stereotypes, chronicling the life of an intelligent, white-washed, African-American college student, adopted by a liberal Caucasian family, who has a crisis of identity while growing up in bible belt, white suburbia with his urban hip-hop culture obsessed, white best friend.

The NAACP Youth will also be set up at the Farmer's Market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Thursday's talent show winner will also be performing their winning act. You can drop by their table and learn more about them and how you can get involved, or register to vote.

A Hutchinson non-profit is helping facilitate a Juneteenth Celebration here in the Salt City this weekend."H.E.E.L.O. Inc is the Hutchinson Empowerment Engagement Leadership Organization," said founder Shontina Tipton. "I'm a native of Hutchinson and I'd been gone for some time. I came back to start a nonprofit. It's a nonprofit to work with the youth in the community. The nonprofit was already in conception about a year ago. It just kind of kicked of during Juneteenth celebration weekend. With H.E.E.L.O., we're going to be working with the youth. We've got several programs we're going to be working with. We've got a Stars and Stripes STEM program that we will be working with 4th to 12th graders, we have a Woodson principal's care to curriculum program, working K-12. We also started the Edward L. Tipton minority scholarship at Hutchinson Community College in honor of my father, Edward Tipton."The events started Thursday with a talent show put on by the NAACP Youth, and there was a blood drive Friday at Stringer Fine Arts Center at HutchCC. There is also a dominoes and spades tournament at Rice Park Community Center Friday night and a pancake feed Saturday morning at the DCI parking lot, along with a Juneteenth Feature Movie, You People that will be shown at the Fox Theatre starting at 6 p.m. Saturday. The movie's creative leader, Laron Chapman will be there."He was born and raised here in Hutchinson, as well," Tipton said. "He left to pursue the movie industry and got an education from Oklahoma State University and he went on to make several movies."According to the IMDb summary of the film, written by Chapman, "You People" is a satirical comedy about modern stereotypes, chronicling the life of an intelligent, white-washed, African-American college student, adopted by a liberal Caucasian family, who has a crisis of identity while growing up in bible belt, white suburbia with his urban hip-hop culture obsessed, white best friend.The NAACP Youth will also be set up at the Farmer's Market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Juneteenth activities continue in Hutchinson this weekend

Margie Schmidt entered the presence of the Lord on June 15, 2022 at the Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born May 27, 1940 in Cordell, Oklahoma to loving parents John and Susie Rempel. 

She grew up in a large white farmhouse outside of Corn, Oklahoma spending time with many of her beloved 70 first cousins, gathering eggs, enjoying her cats, playing with dolls, and making mud-pies, all activities that foreshadowed her amazing homemaking skills. When she was 5, she started spending her summers cooking alongside her mom for her dad’s custom harvesting crew on a cook stove in a small trailer without running water. Because of those experiences, she promised herself she would not marry a custom harvester, not knowing the boy, Geral Schmidt, in her 12-person class that she started dating at 16 would indeed become a custom harvester. 

At Corn High School, she was a spunky cheerleader and a member of the 3-on-3 women’s basketball team. She married Geral at 19 and was an incredible help-mate to him both in sickness and in health during their 61 years of marriage. Margie was the first in her family to graduate from college, earning her Business and Home Economics degrees from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. While her greatest calling was serving as a wise and nurturing mother to Clark and Susan, she also taught business, home economics, and government classes to high school students in the Lorraine, Alden and Sterling school districts for about 20 years before transitioning to a substitute role. She said teaching high school students was “exhilarating.” During the summers until she was 65, she worked tirelessly cooking and delivering delicious and hearty meals to the field for an 8-12 person crew on a wheat harvest run that went from Texas to Montana. During her harvesting career that spanned 60 years she mothered not only Clark and Susan but also “her boys” on the crew. She was also a gifted business manager with a great mind for details. However, her greatest joy was her role as a very loving and supportive “Mimi” to her 5 grandchildren; she attended as many of their activities and birthday parties as possible, loved making cookies or playing games with them, and hosted incredible Christmas celebrations. Margie was also a talented seamstress who sewed clothes in her younger years and transitioned in later years to creating beautiful quilts that her family cherishes. She also loved visiting with her many dear friends and reading as a part of the Page Turners Book Club. As a member of United Methodist Church in Sterling, she served as a trustee and faithful volunteer with her beloved church family and helped start a group that made quilts for veterans and shut-ins. Margie served in every possible office in PEO, as both president and vice-president of Sorosis, and as president of Rice County Republican Women. She also served on the Board of Trustees of Sterling College, South Central Community Foundation, and Republican Central Committee. 

Margie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, John E. Rempel, sister-in-law, Erna, and niece, Maxine. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Lee) of Dallas, and son, Clark (Jessica), of Sterling as well as her grandchildren Garrett (Claire) and Allison Riffe of Dallas and Debra, Wyatt, and Waylon Schmidt of Sterling. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Loretta (Howard) Schmidt of Corn, Oklahoma and Barbara (Ron) Goodman of Conway, Arkansas as well as many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 20, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church, Sterling, with Pastor Amy Foster officiating. Burial will follow at the Sterling Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M., Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling with family present from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.&nbsp;

Geraldine Evelyn “Gerry” Bircher, 94, died peacefully June 15, 2022, at Hester Care Center, Hutchinson.&nbsp; She was born June 6, 1928, in Walton, to Paul Vernon and Viola Martha (Weiser) Stratton.&nbsp;

Gerry graduated from Walton High School in 1946 and attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, majoring in music.&nbsp; While there, she met her future husband, Kenneth Orville (KO) Bircher.&nbsp; They were married May 28, 1948, in Walton, and shared almost 74 years of marriage before his death on March 2, 2022.&nbsp;

After marriage, Gerry and KO moved to Galva and then Norwich, where she began her lifelong love and passion of giving piano and organ lessons in her home. Over the years, she taught hundreds of students to play the piano and organ.&nbsp; Gerry was a talented and gifted musician who could sight-read and transpose any piece of music.&nbsp; She played for weddings (even some of her own children’s weddings), funerals, and served as the church organist for many area churches; if music was involved, she wanted to be a part of the event.&nbsp; Gerry entertained the crowds at the NJCAA basketball tournament, the Miss Hutch Pageant, and accompanied various performers at the Kansas State Fair.&nbsp; She also helped the family run the Drummer Boy restaurant and manage rental properties, when she was not teaching or playing the piano or organ for some community event.&nbsp;

With her busy schedule, she had little time for hobbies, but Gerry loved to cook for her five active children, and many of their friends, who she would take under her wing and offer a place to stay.&nbsp; She loved to babysit her grandchildren, and enjoyed visits from her great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Watching basketball and baseball, and playing Bridge were also some of Gerry’s favorite pastimes.&nbsp;

Gerry is survived by:&nbsp; children, Diane Shirack (Mike) of Centennial, CO, Joan Gibson (Roger) of Wichita, Gene Bircher (Jennifer) of&nbsp; Longmont, CO, Paula Payton (Greg) of Hutchinson, and Craig Bircher (Mary) of Richmond, VA; brother, Alden Stratton of Hesston; grandchildren, Chad Shirack (Lora), Amanda Herndon (Dustin), Curtis Gibson (Kara), Kinzie Flowers (James), Bailey Lardes (Doug), Will Bircher (Morgan), Morgan Starkweather (James), Grady Payton (Brooke), Samantha Rose, Crosby Branham (Cody), Dr. Walter G. Bircher, and Dr. Josie Bircher; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Many years ago, Gerry and KO built a cabin in Southeast Colorado that is now a family heirloom.&nbsp; Countless memories have been made throughout the years at the cabin.&nbsp; It was Gerry and KO’s wishes to have a private family service at the cabin.

Joyce Ann Razo, 80, died June 13, 2022, at her home. She was born June 19, 1941, in Hutchinson, to O’Dell “Doc” and Marie E. (Neufeld) Gilley.

Joyce graduated from Hutchinson High School and attended Hutchinson Community College. In addition to being a homemaker, Joyce worked as a church secretary, in the accounting department at Sears in San Francisco, the first female store manager in Hutchinson at Walgreens, Business Administrator at Central Christian Schools, and activities director at Elm Grove Senior Center. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church and a prayer support group for Open Door Pregnancy Care Center.

Joyce enjoyed painting, photography, entertaining, floral arranging, cake decorating, interior design and organization, and hosting get-togethers.

She is remembered as living out her faith, being nurturing, fun-loving, sensitive to other’s needs, valuing time spent with family, and finishing all tasks given to her.

On June 29, 1958, Joyce married David M. Razo, in Hutchinson. They shared nearly 64 years of marriage. He survives.

Also surviving are: daughters, Joni Razo-Heldreth (Russell) of Hutchinson; Annette Klassen (Wayne) of Mountain Lake, MN; Reba Childerston (Jon) of Kansas City, MO; foster daughter, Carol Pfister (Martin) of Hutchinson; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dale Gilley (Edie) of Walnut Grove, MO; Don Gilley (Darleen) and Bart Gilley (Nancy), all of Wales, MA; sister-in-law, Linda Gilley of Somers, CT, and many extended family members.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, O’Dell and Marie Gilley; a son, Ramon; and brothers, Lonnie and Neil Gilley.

Private family burial will take place in Fairlawn Burial Park.

Memorial Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2022, at First Congregational Church, 3410 N. Plum St., Hutchinson.

Harold Dean Schwiethale, 74, of Hutchinson, died June 11, 2022, at his home. He was born February 19, 1948, in Hutchinson, to Lawrence and Elsie (Hofen) Schwiethale. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry Schwiethale.

Harold graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1966, and then attended Hutchinson Community College. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Harold was a man of many facets. There was always something in his hand, a golf club, firearm, fishing rod, or the lucky hand at the table. He sported a toothpick in his mouth or tucked behind his ear, he’d leave a trail as he traveled the day. Harold was a master in the kitchen, a mixologist, and a coffee connoisseur. He was full of knowledge and he would share, even without being asked. Harold’s mischievous smile and quick wit were infectious. He was a devoted son, loyal brother, doting uncle, and passionate and a trusted friend. Harold’s years with the Golden Gloves was his passion, where he mentored youth for a better path.

He lived his life on his own terms, until the Lord called him home. Harold was blessed to be reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Patty. He lived and died a happy man. Harold’s last days were surrounded by love and peace. He will be greatly missed and was deeply loved by his nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends.

Cremation has taken place and burial will be held at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Kan. — Hutchinson Community College third baseman Ben McLaughlin became the 16th Blue Dragon in program history to earn All-America honors, being named a 2022 second-team All-American by the NJCAA on Monday.

The All-America honor caps a long list of postseason accomplishments for the sophomore from Golden, Colorado, who will continue his playing career with the College World Series-bound Arkansas Razorbacks next season.

McLaughlin is the seventh All-American Blue Dragon in the Ryan Schmidt era. He is also the second-straight third baseman to earn All-America honors, joining Austin Callahan, a second-team All-American last season.

Also this season, McLaughlin became the first Blue Dragon to be named Region VI Defensive Player of the Year. He was a first-team All-Jayhawk Conference Western Division and first-team All-Region VI selection as well.

The sophomore infielder started the season at first base and then moved to third base on March 24. He committed no errors at third base over the final 32 games of the regular season and had just two errors at the hot corner all season long. McLaughlin fielded .986 this season with only three errors in 222 fielding chances this season.

McLaughlin was the Blue Dragons’ undisputed offensive leader this season, hitting .411 (88 of 214) with 19 home runs and 83 RBIs. He also had 23 doubles and posted a .511 on-base percentage with team highs of 34 walks and 13 hit-by-pitches.

McLaughlin had a 16-game and 13-game hitting streak this season. He had 29 multi-hit games (17 two-hit games and 12 three-hit games) and 23 multi-RBI games this season.

McLaughlin was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week on May 11, going 11 for 16 with three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs in a four-game series against Dodge City.

McLaughlin tied for seventh in the NJCAA in RBIs and was eighth in the nation in total bases with 172. His 19 home runs tied for 15th in the NJCAA. McLaughlin was sixth in the Jayhawk Conference with a .411 batting average and was fifth in slugging percentage at .804.

The sophomore had 29 multi-hit games, including 12 three-hit games. He had 23 multi-RBI games with a season-high five RBIs against Dodge City on May 6. McLaughlin owns the Blue Dragon single-game RBI record with nine against Pratt on April 3, 2021.

He had 29 multi-hit games (17 two-hit games and 12 three-hit games) and 23 multi-RBI games this season.McLaughlin was named the NJCAA National Player of the Week on May 11, going 11 for 16 with three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs in a four-game series against Dodge City.McLaughlin tied for seventh in the NJCAA in RBIs and was eighth in the nation in total bases with 172. His 19 home runs tied for 15th in the NJCAA. McLaughlin was sixth in the Jayhawk Conference with a .411 batting average and was fifth in slugging percentage at .804.The sophomore had 29 multi-hit games, including 12 three-hit games. Southwest Bricktown, as we've already noted, is doing a lot of their own work in advocacy," Stewart said. "Grace Arbor, there's some work going on there, the neighborhood is really taking the reins on. I really do think the program is good for getting residents of the neighborhood in a position where they can be empowered to speak for themselves."

As we have already noted, the Lincoln Elementary neighborhood is the next one that Stewart would like to start with. In a separate story, <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/505d5ebc-f1bb-44f7-8200-d92583bf4c24">Hutch Post reported earlier this year that remodeling Lincoln is one of the projects recommended by RSP in their facilities study of USD 308. </a>

It would seem to follow, then, that the organization that would come from being involved in the neighborhood establishment process could create some of the relationships necessary to be able to successfully advocate before the USD 308 school board and, if necessary, before the entire community to see that the Lincoln remodel actually happens.

"Currently, we have six neighborhoods that have received proclamations from city council officially recognizing them," Stewart said. "In order from oldest to newest, in terms of being in the program, that's SW Bricktown, College Grove, Farmington Park, Creekside, Grace Arbor and Midtown. With the work starting up around Lincoln Elementary School, that will make seven."

Neighborhood establishment results in advocacy

Orletta Fern Brandt (Heide) Wiebe went to be with Jesus on June 8, 2022, at the age of 91. Orletta enjoyed music (never missing a chance to sing 4-part harmony with friends and family), sports (attending and streaming countless football, basketball and volleyball games), reading (bringing books to share with her grandchildren and also reading to challenge herself) traveling to see family (navigating many road trips with her sister, Joyce), gathering with friends, and sharing her faith in God. Orletta’s life began on March 25, 1931, at Hillsboro, Kansas, born to William P. and Lillian (Bartel) Brandt. After 7 days her mother died, leaving her father with 2 sons, ages 2 &amp; 3 and a newborn (Orletta). She was received and nurtured in the home of Henry H. and Linda (Penner) Bartel until her father married Anna Ewert. Orletta’s new mom was loved dearly by all of her instant family. Soon another son, Franklin, joined the family, but lived only 6 months. Later 3 sisters, Pearl, Darlene, and Joyce and a brother John joined the family.&nbsp; Orletta’s education began at Lehigh, Kansas. Because of family moves, she also attended 3 different rural schools. At 13 years of age she was baptized and joined the Johannestal Mennonite Church. After graduating from Hillsboro High School she attended Tabor College for one year. It was there that Orletta was challenged to serve as a volunteer under MCC. Her 2 years of service included one year at the office of the National Service Board for Religious Objectors in Washington, D.C. After her 2nd year at MCC in Akron, PA, she entered nurses training at Bethel College and Bethel Deaconess Hospital, graduating in 1957.&nbsp; Her first work experience as a nurse was at Beatrice Mennonite Hospital, Beatrice, NE. Several years later she returned to Newton KS to work at Prairie View Mental Health Center. It was there she met and married Marvin Heide, a Mt. Lake, MN native, on September 4, 1960. After living in Mt. Lake for a year, where she worked in the Mennonite Hospital, they moved to Hillsboro, KS, and were blessed with 4 children: Jerold, Carolyn, Dennis and Kendall. During the next 10 years Orletta worked at a clinic and at Salem Hospital in Hillsboro.&nbsp; They lived in Beatrice, NE, from 1972-1974, where Orletta worked in a Mental Health Clinic.&nbsp; In 1973 they moved back to Hillsboro where Marvin became owner and operator of Hillsboro Equipment, Inc. They were active members of Trinity Mennonite Church, serving as deacons and youth leaders. Orletta was chosen as the first woman deacon in their church, and with God’s grace was able to minister along with others. She returned to Prairie View, working in the children’s program.&nbsp; In 1979 Orletta’s husband, Marvin, passed away from cancer. She became a single mother of an 11, 14, 16 and 17 year-old. A year or so later she began working for the Marion County Health Dept., later becoming the director. She proudly saw all 4 children graduate from Bethel College. Through a mutual friend, Orletta was introduced to John Wiebe. John lived and worked in Winnipeg, Manitoba as Conference Minister in the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba. Following the leading of their hearts (and a sense of God’s leading) and family support, John and Orletta were married on March 19, 1988. The following 22 years Orletta lived in Winnipeg, where she also was received by 3 stepchildren, Gerald, Barry and Cindy, and one grandchild, Alex. There Orletta chose to join the Bethel Mennonite Church, serving in a variety of ways. For a number of years she was in a group that met to pray and contemplate once a week, a very enriching experience which continued to challenge her prayer life. Orletta was encouraged to enter the Pastoral Care Ministry under the umbrella of the Conference of Mennonites in Manitoba. Following a year of training and classes Orletta served for 10 years in ministering at St. Boniface Hospital. In 2009, John passed away and Orletta moved back to Kansas, to live at Kidron Bethel Village, joining many friends from her past and gaining many new ones. Living there offered many opportunities to grow spiritually, joining a prayer group and numerous book discussions. Orletta said,“Reading, cooking, and traveling were some of my favorite activities. Having been blessed with relatively good health, I daily pray with thankfulness. Great is your faithfulness, God.” Orletta was preceded in death by her parents, William, Lillian (Bartel) and Anna (Ewert) Brandt, two husbands, Marvin Heide and John F. Wiebe, brother, Eldon &amp; wife Anny Brandt, sister-in-law Grace (Ewert) Brandt, brothers-in-law Bill Colhoff, John McConnel, sister, Darlene and husband Lewis Haney, and brother-in-law Richard Barkman. Janice Fay Arjes, 72, passed away June 5, 2022, at her home.&nbsp; She was born September 18, 1949, in Hutchinson, to Jimmy Jack and Cora Francis (Patrick) Holland.

Janice was a graduate of Ellsworth High School, Ellsworth, and Brown Mackie Business College, Salina.&nbsp; She was a homemaker and was employed in the real estate business.

Janice enjoyed working in her garden, art, and traveling.&nbsp; She loved animals and served as the president of a local humane society.

Janice is survived by: her son, Jeff (Sunam) Arjes of Severn, MD; grandsons, Christopher Arjes and Ryan Arjes; siblings, Mike Holland of Moundridge, Carol (Rick) Carrazco of Ellsworth, and Marla Holland of Hutchinson; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Bella.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kevin Holland.

Cremation has taken place.&nbsp; Celebration of Life gathering may be scheduled at a future date.&nbsp;

A. Swenson-Cottle, 89, passed away Monday, June 4, 2022, Olathe Hospice House,
Olathe. 
Doris was born on December 21, 1932, in Hutchinson, the daughter of Travis
and Anna Evans Avery.&nbsp; She graduated from Hutchinson High School and
attended Hutchinson Community College where she received a degree in
Nutrition.&nbsp; Doris retired in 1995 after 25 years as a nutritionist service
manager for USD #308. &nbsp;On January 30, 1954, Doris married Lawrence
Swenson.&nbsp; He died April 16, 1994.&nbsp; On January 19, 2006, she married
Charles R. Cottle.&nbsp; He died on July 17, 2021. 
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Lawrence and Robert; a son,
