Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the Kansas State Fairgrounds again.

After <a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/fdb90e4d-acec-4951-9aa1-8de848f1398b">Evel Knievel's historic jump in last week's article</a>, I wanted to focus on other great grandstand events over the fair's long history.

In 1908, the Strobel Airship moored at the fair to give twice-a-day rides. As seen in the first two photos, it was 60-feet long, 18 feet in diameter, 7500 pounds of hydrogen gas, had 500 pounds of lifting capacity, a 4-cycle, 4-cylinder engine with 15 H.P., 570 yards of Japanese silk, and weighed 82 pounds.

The third photo shows the winners of the first motorcycle races ever held in the state in 1910.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Grandstand Events - Vol. 130

Reno County 4-H Ambassadors Tagan Metzger and Kora Zongker stopped by the Reno County Commission meeting this week to invite both the board and the community to the upcoming Reno County Fair, which runs July 23–28 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.

The ambassadors extended a special invitation to commissioners for the fair’s awards luncheon on July 28 at noon. Fair Board President Clint Lanning also provided commissioners with tickets for the Blue Ribbon BBQ, scheduled for Sunday, July 27, and shared a schedule of events.

In other business, Bryan Schulz, General Manager of the Kansas State Fair, requested the Commission consider helping fund a proposed $4.2 million Emergency Command Center. The facility would be built on the site of the former fire station at Main and 20th Street and would serve as a year-round hub for law enforcement, emergency responders and event security. Schulz said the project is critical to protect the more than 330,000 visitors who attend the fair each year.

However, some commissioners expressed hesitation about committing county tax dollars to a state-owned facility. Commissioner Bogner called the request “pretty darn steep,” and others questioned why the original fire station was demolished instead of being renovated. Some members showed interest but indicated that any contribution would likely require a formal agreement ensuring shared access during emergencies.

Also during the meeting, the board approved updated design plans for the $600,000 remodel of EMS Station 2. Facilities Director Kyle Stewart noted that $63,000 of that cost is due to a new fire suppression system now required by the City of Hutchinson. Commissioners acknowledged frustration with rising costs but agreed the project should move forward and voted unanimously to put it out for bids.

Finally, the board approved an interlocal agreement with Kingman County, allowing property owners in the Kingman portion of a shared fire district to receive tax rebates through Kingman County’s Neighborhood Revitalization Plan. Reno County will have no financial obligation but needed to sign off on the arrangement to make it official.

The Reno County Board of County Commissioners will meet next Wednesday at 9 a.m. for a budget meeting.&nbsp; At the meeting commissioners will set a maximum mill levy for the next fiscal year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

County commission approves EMS station plans, agreement with Kingman County 

Mary L. Gaeddert died on July 4, 2025 at Kidron Bethel Village, North Newton, Kansas. She was 94. Mary Lou Voran was born October 7, 1930, in Kingman County, Kansas, the daughter of Fred Ernest and Edna Mary (Graber) Voran. Mary was a graduate of Kingman High School and attended Bethel College (Kansas) where she received a teaching certificate. Mary taught first grade in Sedgwick, Kansas, before marrying John W. Gaeddert on June 1, 1951 at Bethany Mennonite Church in Kingman County. Mary described herself as a “helpmate” to her teacher/pastor husband, moving from rural Lehigh, Kansas to urban Chicago, Illinois and suburban Elkhart, Indiana; from Henderson, Nebraska to faraway Congo/Zaire; from the parsonage at Tabor Mennonite Church to a house in North Newton and finally to Kidron Bethel Village. At each stop along the way Mary had many jobs: teaching Sunday School, hosting church members and visiting speakers at the family home, and being stay-at-home mom to Susan, Dee and Russ. She sewed outfits and cooked meal after meal after expertly prepared meal. She helped her kids put on a circus for the neighborhood. Singing in church and community choirs was one of her life’s great joys, and Mary anchored every soprano section she ever sang in. She did daily battle with John’s many cowlicks. John’s career took the family many, many places, and Mary made a home wherever they went. But how do you make a home in the capital city of a country recently and violently overthrown in a coup? In Kinshasa in the 1960s, Mary did it, working with unfamiliar ingredients and in uncertain times, setting tables for her kids and famished Pax men alike. How do you make a home when the church owns it, when little is yours alone and all eyes are on you as the pastor’s wife? In rural Goessel, Mary did it, as the Vietnam War raged, protests erupted and the children grew. How do you make a home when all you had was sold off before the previous move? How do you make a home when the bank account dips dangerously low? When you feel utterly spent, at your wit’s end? Mary did it. Mary Lou Gaeddert made her homes well, with love, talent and determination. With the children grown and the demands at home more manageable, Mary began a second career as a copy editor and proofreader for Faith and Life Press and a typesetter for Mennonite Press in Newton, Kansas, retiring in 1992. The need for careful precision and sustained attention suited Mary. Under her watchful eye, many a “who” became a “whom.” The dictionary tells us there is a difference between “love” and “like”; Mary loved all, as Jesus taught, but she had no particular fondness for the players and coaches of teams that opposed her Kansas Jayhawks, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas City Royals. Special enmity was reserved for the likes of John Elway and Kirby Puckett. Puckett once apologized in writing to Mary for hitting a game-winning home run against the Royals. Whether Mary truly accepted that apology is unknown, but that restaurant ticket autographed by Puckett maintained a place of pride on the Gaeddert pinboard for many years. Mary is survived by three children: Susan Bartel (Allan) of North Newton, Kansas; Dee Gaeddert Dorsey (Jim) of Grant, Minnesota.; and Russell Gaeddert (Jean Flickinger) of Hutchinson, Kansas; four grandchildren: Nathan Bartel (Kendra Burkey), Megan Bartel (Chris Lowen), Adam Gaeddert (Rebecca Woodruff), and Sam Gaeddert (Keila Quenzer); six great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Lois Strong and Velma Stoesz. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dallas Voran, Paul Voran (Benetta and second wife Grace), and Robert Voran; one sister, Helen M. Voth (Orville); and her beloved husband of 69 years, John W. Gaeddert. The family will celebrate Mary’s life in a private service at a later date. Memorial gifts

The Reno County Board of County Commissioners will meet Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse with a packed agenda that highlights public safety, community partnerships, and neighborhood revitalization.

Among the items is a presentation by the Kansas State Fair seeking support for a new Emergency Operations Command Center (ECC) to be located at the corner of Poplar and Main — the site of the old Hutchinson Fire Station. The proposed $4.2 to $4.5 million facility would serve multiple roles, including acting as the primary hub for emergency services during the annual Kansas State Fair, which draws more than 330,000 visitors each year.

Beyond the Fair, the ECC would also provide year-round operations for the Kansas Highway Patrol, freeing up space in the Fair Administration Building, and serve as a backup emergency operations site for major regional incidents such as severe weather or mass casualty events. The project also aligns with broader security efforts to harden “soft targets” like the Fairgrounds, which the Department of Homeland Security has identified as vulnerable public venues.

The Fairgrounds has contracted local architect Sarah Sipe of Landmark Architects for the design and is working to secure state, federal, and other funding partners to help offset the total cost.

Also on the agenda Wednesday is an invitation from the Reno County 4-H Ambassadors, encouraging commissioners and the community to attend the upcoming Reno County Fair.

The agenda also includes the inspection and approval for the new Station 2 EMS building.&nbsp; The EMS post is moving to 211 West Second Street.&nbsp; The location is just west of Fifth Street and Adams.&nbsp; One completed, the current location for post two will be remodeled and used by the Reno County Health Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commissioners will also consider approving an interlocal Neighborhood Revitalization Plan (NRP) agreement with Kingman County. The plan would apply to Fire District 1, which spans both counties, and would cover commercial properties only. Qualifying improvements that increase property taxes could result in a refund of the difference between the original and increased tax amount.

The meeting will also include a report from County Administrator Randy Partington with updates on monthly department activities.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community Foundation is continuing its focus on housing, community development and leadership as it opens applications for the second Impact Cycle of its 2025 Fund for Reno County grants.

Established in 1990, the Fund for Reno County serves as a permanent resource to meet the evolving needs for the area. Grants are designed to support projects that reflect innovation, collaboration, critical need, or opportunities that leverage local resources to benefit the broader community.

Proposals must align with one of two priority categories:

Applications must come from 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that serve Reno County. Individuals or groups without nonprofit status must apply through a qualified fiscal sponsor.

Proposals are due by Aug. 15 and must be submitted online through the Foundation’s Grant Lifecycle Management system, available at hutchcf.org/nonprofitsandgrants/available-grants. The grant program is part of the Foundation’s broader strategy to address key community issues, including housing and blight. One of its signature efforts this year is a leadership cohort focused on housing access for vulnerable populations, a growing concern in Reno County and across rural Kansas. The cohort brings together 17 participants from across sectors to engage in training, collaboration and long-term planning.

“Housing is a complex issue,” said Kari Mailloux, director of strategy. “There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but we believe that bringing diverse voices to the table is how real progress begins.”

The Foundation launched its “Love Where You Live” empowerment campaign last year to better understand community needs. Feedback from residents helped shape current funding priorities, including a stronger focus on workforce and economic development.

“We want to help people go from wanting change to taking action,” Mailloux said. “Our grants are one way to help unlock that potential.”

Blake, who manages the Foundation’s grant and scholarship programs, said the grant process is intentionally designed to be accessible.

“We encourage organizations to contact us early,” she said. “We’re happy to walk applicants through the process and help them shape their proposals before they submit.”

The Hutchinson Community Foundation, established in 1989, manages more than 400 funds and serves as a hub for charitable giving in Reno County. It also offers free estate planning consultations through attorney John Griffin of Stewardship Counseling LLC and accepts a variety of charitable gifts, including non-cash assets.

One of the Foundation’s most visible efforts, Match Day, is held every four years to boost endowments for local nonprofits. The next Match Day is scheduled for 2028.

Hutchinson Community Foundation targets housing, economic development with new grants

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Students from Buhler and Lyons high schools are among 43 students statewide to earn the 2025 Kansas Agriculture Skills and Competencies Certificate, awarded by the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

20 students from Buhler High School and four from Lyons High School received the distinction, which recognizes excellence in agricultural education, leadership, and career readiness. Students completed a rigorous program that includes classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience (SAE), and active participation in FFA. A minimum 2.5 GPA across all coursework is also required.

Buhler's honorees include Eliza Aldrich, Cassidy Banning, Ethan Barrett, Aivlynn Ehmke, Gage Elliott, Kyler Gillespie, Will Hanen, Brayden Henry, Payton Huffman, Brayden Leiker, Rachael Mourn, Madelyn Poepperling, Maecy Rosenberger, Ella Sanborn, Logan Schmidt, Scott Schweizer, Juliette Shank, Logan Snyder, Talon Sullivant and Jake Winters.

Buhler, Lyons students among honorees for Kansas Ag Skills Certificate

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — BFO Bids, the fast-growing online auction company founded by Justin and Lauren Bright, has officially opened its new home at 2 North Main Street in downtown Hutchinson. The move marks a major expansion for the local business and sets the stage for the launch of a new companion retail platform, BFO2GO.

The new facility opened July 1 and offers significantly more space for inventory processing, customer pickups and daily operations. The 2 North Main location will serve as the central hub for both BFOBIDS.com, its established online auction marketplace, and the soon-to-launch BFO2GO retail store, which will feature online shopping with same-day pickup and nationwide shipping.

“This move is a huge milestone for us,” Justin Bright said. “We’ve outgrown every space we’ve had faster than expected, and this new building finally gives us the room to grow, not just in what we do now, but in what we’re building toward.”

BFO Bids began in early 2023 out of a small warehouse in Buhler, Kansas. Since then, it has grown rapidly, operating out of the Hutchinson Mall and later 405 North Main before relocating downtown. Along the way, the Brights have developed a hybrid business model that combines online auctions with in-person pickup and community partnerships.

“BFOBIDS.com will always be the foundation of what we do,” Bright said. “We’ve expanded it to include liquidation from major retailers like Amazon and Target, estate sales, business inventory reduction, vehicles, large equipment, even charity fundraisers.”

With the upcoming launch of BFO2GO, the Brights are expanding into online retail with a model designed for convenience and value.

“Think of it like Walmart.com, but with a BFO twist,” Bright said. “You’ll be able to shop online for brand-new products, have them shipped anywhere in the U.S., or pick them up the same day right here in Hutch.”

The 2 North Main building will also undergo aesthetic upgrades, including new signage and interior improvements. Despite some construction still underway, the facility is already open for customer pickups and operational needs.

“There just aren’t many large, affordable commercial buildings in Hutchinson that aren’t tied up in corporate leases,” Bright said. “When this location became available, we knew it was the right fit. It allows us to bring our auction and retail operations together under one roof.”

In addition to selling its own inventory, BFO also partners with independent vendors, offering them a platform to reach a broader customer base without the costs of maintaining a physical storefront. BFO handles customer service and pickup logistics on their behalf.

“This gives small businesses a chance to start selling online without needing loans or huge upfront costs,” Bright said. “It’s the kind of thing I wish had existed when we started. Now we’re able to offer that opportunity to others.”

Bright credited the company’s rapid growth to community support, especially from the Buhler area, where he and Lauren still live.

“We wouldn’t be here without the early support we got in Buhler,” he said. “People jumped in from day one, and that gave us the boost we needed to get started.”

BFO Bids opens expanded downtown Hutchinson location

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Fresh off a share of the 2024 NJCAA Division I football national title, Hutchinson Community College will open the 2025 season ranked No. 1 in the JCGridiron Dirty 30 Preseason Rankings, released July 4.

The Blue Dragons top the national list, edging out Iowa Western and defending co-champion San Mateo. San Mateo, which claimed the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) title, shares last year’s national crown with Hutchinson.

This marks the second straight year the Blue Dragons open the season with the preseason No. 1 ranking.

Hutchinson begins its 2025 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 6, with a road matchup at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico.

The Blue Dragons have been a consistent national contender, appearing in three of the last five NJCAA championship games and winning or sharing the national title in both 2021 and 2024.

JCGridiron’s rankings are based on roster strength, coaching continuity, and key positional talent — especially at quarterback. Hutchinson’s veteran leadership and key offseason additions helped solidify its top ranking.

Rounding out the top five are Iowa Western, San Mateo, Garden City and Mt. San Antonio.

Hutchinson is one of three Kansas programs featured in the preseason rankings. Garden City makes a surprising jump to No. 4 following a 1-10 season in 2023 that was later adjusted due to forfeitures, while Butler lands at No. 20 after going 7-4.

Victor Lee Wilkinson, age 65, was born in Hutchinson on December 30, 1959, and passed away suddenly on July 2, 2025, from a heart attack.

Victor attended both Haven and Buhler Public Schools. &nbsp;He graduated from Buhler High School a semester early to work at Consolidated Manufacturing. There, Victor rebuilt car engines for 18 years, first on the assembly line and later managing quality control.

On July 29, 1994 he married Angela Lindahl. They shared over 30 years of love, laughter, common interests, projects, and unique experiences.

While working at Consolidated, Victor observed his wife’s love of teaching and wanted to pursue having a classroom of his own. After the birth of his son, he became a stay-at-home dad for two years. During this time, Victor also earned his Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and started his Master’s degree at Wichita State University.

In 1997, Victor started his teaching career in 5th grade at Avenue A Elementary in the Hutchinson school district. He later enjoyed working with second graders at McCandless Elementary. Victor most recently taught 7th and 8th grade science at Prairie Hills Middle School.

Victor started an archery club in Hutchinson schools and then later at Prairie Hills Middle School. With fellow science teacher Shelly Brooks, he also launched the Bee Club—making Prairie Hills the first school in Kansas to receive a grant from the Kansas Honey Producers.&nbsp;

Victor happily spent long hours cultivating an outdoor learning environment across from his middle school. He dug a pond, installed bridges, created trails, and planted thousands of wildflower seeds. Victor also enjoyed taking students on field trips to Fort Riley and Kanopolis Lake to enjoy nature and hunt for reptiles and amphibians. All of these activities provided unique opportunities for many children.

Victor’s family appreciated his sense of humor and willingness to help others. This has been reflected in comments made by his colleagues, students, and their parents. Knowing that people outside Victor’s family recognized the contribution he made has been heart-warming to those that loved him.

He completed his 27th year of teaching this May. &nbsp;The upcoming school year was to be Victor’s final year in the classroom. He had recently set his retirement date for June 2026 so he could be outside all day/every day, and have more time to complete the projects on his “Before We Get Old” to-do list that he had recently posted on the back of the family’s pantry door.

Victor’s work ethic was something to behold. He worked long hours on many projects and enjoyed the pleasure of a job well done. Amazingly, many of Victor’s projects were not on his own land or for himself, but for the good of others. He was generous with his time and energy. Victor was a quiet leader who did things for his community “because they needed to be done.”

He loved the outdoors and learning new things. Victor spent a great deal of time planting, growing and cultivating ecosystems, and planning things that would benefit wild animals and the students in his classes.

His love of living things led him to many hobbies, such as herpetology, beekeeping, falconry, bonsai, and collecting unique plants.

Victor was extremely proud of his family and they adored him. His presence will be greatly missed by his wife, Angela Wilkinson, and their two children, Garrett Wilkinson of Boston, MA, (Olivia Zhao) and Brecken Wilkinson of Manhattan, KS (Connor Peak), and his many animal companions.

Other surviving family members include: sisters Shelly Cole (Brannon), Shawna Keller (Darren), Angela Holoubek Albright (Brent), and brothers Tim Wilkinson (Blythe), and Shannon Wilkinson (Jennifer), and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

He also loved being a son-in-law to Becky and Gary Lindahl.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Peggy Holoubek and Terry Wilkinson.

The family is hosting a celebration of Victor’s life at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1602 N. Main, Hutchinson on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 10:00 AM. Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday at Elliott Mortuary. &nbsp;The family will receive friends at the church, following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you plant something in your own yard to feed the bees or attract other wildlife, or memorials are suggested to the Victor L. For the first time in more than 30 years, drum corps is alive and well in Hutchinson — and the Sky Ryders are proving that rebuilding an iconic name starts at the ground level.

The corps has been rehearsing up to 10 hours a day since arriving on June 30 for its two-week training camp, wrapping up with a dress rehearsal on July 7 before hitting the road the next morning. Their short but impactful summer tour will take them to three Drum Corps International (DCI) SoundSport shows in Ankeny and Dubuque, Iowa, and Illinois before returning home on July 12.

It’s the second year the Sky Ryders have fielded a SoundSport ensemble — a division designed for developing groups with flexible instrumentation and performance lengths. It’s a starting point with big dreams attached.

“The goal is to grow this step by step,” said Dale Antoine of the Sky Ryders. “This year is about getting kids on the road, giving them the experience of being a drum corps member, and laying the groundwork for the future. We hope to move into DCI’s Open Class in the next two years — but that depends on funding, logistics, and where the tour goes.”

This summer’s group includes 76 marching members, up from 68 last year. They come from across Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas, ranging in age from 14 to 21. While world-class drum corps tend to average members aged 18 to 19 — and many now won’t accept minors at all — the Sky Ryders see value in cultivating young talent early.

“There are only two kids here who’ve marched drum corps before,” Craig said. “So this really is a building block. We’re mixing kids with all levels of experience — but they’re all learning what it means to be a team.”

SoundSport allows the corps to keep its wind players for now — something that will need to change if they advance to Open Class, where only brass and percussion are permitted with one specialty instrument allowed. But for now, it’s all about accessibility.

“We’re not chasing perfection right now,” Antoine said. “We’re focused on giving the kids a positive experience. Hopefully, they’ll stick with it, grow their skills, and maybe pick up a new instrument if they want to move up.”

Putting a corps on the road isn’t cheap. The group’s operating budget this year is expected to come in around $135,000, a far cry from the $1.5 million a world-class corps might spend — but still a big leap for a program revived just two years ago.

Much of the equipment is borrowed from supportive schools, and community partners like the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the local school district and area band directors have stepped up to help. Marching fees are kept as low as possible — about $750 for each member — compared to upwards of $6,000 for world-class corps. Even so, basic expenses add up quickly, from bus rentals to borrowed tubas.

While the Sky Ryders missed out on hosting a local DCI show this summer — due to changes in the tour model — the goal is to bring one back to Hutchinson next season.

“Drum corps hasn’t had a home here for three decades,” Antoine said. “It takes time to rebuild. We’re trying to grow it organically, keep it affordable, and get more local kids involved. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished already.”

When the buses roll out on July 8, it won’t just be about the scores. For this corps, every mile on the road is another step toward reviving a legacy — one rookie marcher at a time.

Sky Ryders gears up for first tour in decades

Troy Dean Brown, 58, of Hutchinson, passed peacefully in his sleep on June 29, 2025, surrounded by family, at Ascension Via Christi - St. Francis in Wichita, after a brief illness. He was born November 4, 1966, in Hutchinson, to M. Duane and Judy (Leatherbury) Brown.

Troy attended Nickerson schools, graduating from Nickerson High School in 1985. Shortly after graduation, he joined the United States Navy, participating in the Gulf War’s Desert Shield and Desert Storm. While Troy never saw active combat, he felt fortunate to explore port cities across America, southern Europe, the Mediterranean, Middle East, and southwest Asia. After being honorably discharged, Troy worked various jobs. He liked to keep his options open while gaining new experiences; from long-haul truck driving to grain elevator inspection to machinist, forklift driver, baker for Dutch Kitchen, and various positions for Dillons. In 2019 Troy finally grew roots in Hutchinson, buying his first home and was currently working as the shoe department manager for Atwoods.

Troy never married and had no children, but he loved his nieces and nephews unconditionally. Troy loved spending time with his family and never missed a holiday or birthday, or spoiling everyone at Christmas. A big kid at heart, Troy was always ready to watch a Disney movie, play Monopoly, go for ice cream, or teach the kids how to win Mario Kart. He enjoyed spending his days with close friends, his evenings playing video games online with his nephew, and taking his dad and sister to lunch every Sunday. Troy was also an avid lover of music and never missed an opportunity to share the classics or listen to new stuff recommended by his niece and nephew. His most recent plan was to attend an Alice Cooper and Judas Priest show with his niece.

Troy is survived by: his father, Duane; sister, Rhonda Stewart; niece Jennifer Wise (Stephen Zook); nephew, Austin Stewart (Kiersten); great-nephews, Marshal, Carter, Ren; great-niece, Sequoia; aunt, Debbie Soper (Ed); and numerous life-long friends that are as close as family.

He was preceded in death by: his most beloved mother, Judy; grandparents, Ted and Dolly Brown, David and Mildred Leatherbury; uncles, Bob Brown, Davey Leatherbury Jr; aunts, Miriam Bailey, Shirley Green, Glennda Leatherbury, Shelley Leatherbury; and his “only son” Tom the tomcat.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2025, at Elliot Mortuary Chapel, with Pastor Gary Getting officiating, with military honors presented by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield.

Family will be present to receive friends at 9 a.m. the day of the service in Elliot Mortuary Chapel. Friends may sign Troy's memorial book between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. July 7 - July 11, at Elliott Mortuary, or anytime online.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Eagle Media Center will be closed Friday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day and to take part in a full day of community celebrations.

Eagle Media will help organize and host the annual Patriots Day Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Friday in downtown Hutchinson. The parade will travel north on Main Street from Avenue B to 12th Avenue.

Additional family-friendly festivities will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Project Park at DCI Park, hosted by Hutch Rec. Activities include inflatables, yard games, a community art project, and the Bubbles &amp; Brew food truck. Kids can also enjoy free hot dogs from noon to 1 p.m.

The celebration continues in the evening at the Kansas State Fairgrounds with a fireworks show at the Nex-Tech Grandstand. The Hutchinson Municipal Band will perform a patriotic concert beginning at 8:30 p.m., followed by the fireworks display around 9:30 p.m. The fireworks are presented by the City of Hutchinson, Showalter Fireworks, Rainbow Fireworks Inc. and the Kansas State Fair.

Eagle Media Center closed July 4 for Independence Day events

FOUNTAIN HILLS, AZ- June Louise Lowrey was born in Hutchinson Kansas on May 20, 1924 to Lawrence I. and Elsie Lowrey. She married her beloved husband Frederick I “Bud” Shaffer, Jr., immediately after his discharge from the Army Air Corp on March 5, 1946 in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp;

They lived in Hutchinson until 1998, when they, along with the families of Ron, Tim, and Rick moved to Fountain Hills, AZ to join their son John. She passed away May 6, 2025, at the age of 100. &nbsp;God and family were the center of her life. There was no separation of the two.&nbsp;

June was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson, and later, Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church in Arizona. Together with Bud, she provided a loving, stable household for their four sons. She also found the time to volunteer for many causes that required her love. She volunteered at Grace Hospital, later to be named Hutchinson Hospital in the Physical Therapy department. She also cared for dying people as a Hospice Volunteer. She attended Kansas State University, and remained active with Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority alumni chapters in Hutchinson, and Phoenix. She attended regular meetings of PEO.&nbsp;

When 3 of her sons joined Sigma Chi Fraternity, at Kansas University, she gathered with other mothers on various trips to Lawrence, to help the fraternity. Throughout her entire life, she lived to give love. She did not want attention. Instead, in addition to members of her family, she quietly consoled others with wisdom, caring, and tenderness. If one wanted to know God, they needed only to see the sparkle and light coming from her eyes.

She also cared for her extended family. She kept in touch with her aunts in Wichita. Her sister-in-law Sissy Bowden became her true sister, as they talked constantly on the phone, even though they lived apart. June was always curious as to what was going on with “The Chabins “and The Bowdens.”

As an active member of Prairie Dunes, June and Bud enjoyed tennis and golf. They liked spending time with friends, as long as it did not distract from their boys. Both June and Bud were excellent bridge players. She continued to play bridge with her bridge friends her entire life, even teaching others how to play. She did not care about pop culture. Rather, June loved to read books, even into her late 90s.

She was preceded in death by her mother Elsie and her father “Jack, or Grampie” Lowrey. June is survived by her 4 sons and families, 8 grand- children and families, and 4 great grandchildren: Rick Shaffer; Ron and Brenda Shaffer; Stephanie Dieterich, Cade, Beau; Chris and Nikki Shaffer, Maverick, Marley June; Tim and Diana, Craig, Julie, Ted, Natalie, Tori; John and Elizabeth Shaffer, Sophia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, on October 16, 2002.

A Memorial Service was held at Messinger Fountain Hills Mortuary on Sunday, May 25, 2025 at 3:00 PM.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the Kansas State Fair grandstand in September of 1971.

The 1971 fair was like no other. A few months before it started, we began seeing Hugo (Shea) Enterprises, the Harley-Davidson dealer in Wichita, with posters advertising motorcycle races for the 1971 fair, along with a crazy man named Evel Knievel, who liked to jump obstacles with his Harley. The first photo shows the program from the day's events.

The eventful day started with a pre-jump press conference with Gov. Robert Docking and Attorney General Vern Miller, who was also a motorcycle racer. The second photo shows that event.

As the program started, Evel would show off his riding prowess with wheelies like the third photo shows.

After a good bit of teasing, the jump happened. The fourth photo shows the mid-jump aerial over 10 Kenworth trucks parked side-by-side.

The video shows the actual jump, taken by Greg Payton sitting in the stands with his dad's Super 8 camera.

The fifth photo shows Evel sticking his landing before pulling out the parachute.

The sixth photo shows Evel waving to the crowd afterward. A memorable 1971 fair was had by all!

📷 Throwback Thursday: Knievel's Jump - Vol. 129

Reno County officials are taking significant steps to boost housing, revitalize aging properties, and tap into renewable energy as part of ongoing efforts to address some of the county’s most pressing needs.

Last week, the Reno County Commission approved a countywide Neighborhood Revitalization Plan, aimed at breathing new life into neglected or aging properties. The plan incentivizes homeowners and commercial property owners to improve their buildings by offering a property tax rebate.

“This is really about giving property owners that extra push to fix up homes and buildings that otherwise might sit in disrepair,” said County Administrator Randy Partington. Properties valued under $250,000 can qualify for the program. After improvements are made, owners will receive a five-year rebate on the increase in their property taxes resulting from the renovations.

Previously, similar revitalization programs existed only within certain cities like Hutchinson, Haven, and Buhler. Now, the countywide plan makes the incentive available throughout Reno County, including unincorporated areas, and gives smaller cities the option to opt in.

Tackling Affordable Housing
Affordable housing remains a top concern for local leaders, who point to an ongoing shortage of quality, attainable homes across the county. Last week, the commission approved an agreement with developer Jim Strachan to make new homes in the Plum Creek subdivision more affordable.

Under the plan, buyers could see up to $9,000 shaved off the cost of a lot thanks to county funds, helping lower the total purchase price. “Sometimes it takes a little assistance to make these projects pencil out,” said Partington, noting the county’s broader housing development policy encourages similar partnerships with other cities and developers.

In addition, Reno County has already partnered with the City of Hutchinson on another development project near 11th and Hendricks and has contributed ARPA funds to organizations like Interfaith Housing to support various projects throughout the county.

Turning Trash into Renewable Cash
County officials are also working on an innovative plan to convert methane gas from the Reno County landfill into a revenue-generating resource. Through an agreement with Meadowlark Renewables, the county would allow the company to capture and convert landfill gas into usable methane, which would then be sold on the market.

Currently, excess gases are burned off through flares. If the project moves forward, it could generate an estimated $400,000 to $500,000 per year for the county, helping fund landfill operations and possibly stabilizing rates for residents. “This is a great example of turning an environmental challenge into a financial opportunity,” Partington said.

Crunching the Numbers
Meanwhile, the county’s annual budget process is underway, with a goal of keeping the mill levy as flat as possible. Reno County’s total proposed budget is about $80 million, covering all expenditures — not just taxes.

Partington said his team has already made adjustments to offset about $4 million in initial projected increases through higher revenue estimates and cash balance shifts. They’re now working to close a final $1.8 million gap before presenting a maximum budget to the County Commission on July 16.

To explore new revenue streams that could ease the property tax burden, Reno County has also contracted Wichita State University to survey residents about the possibility of a countywide sales tax. Any increase above the current limit would require approval from the Kansas Legislature, so the county hopes to have survey results by year’s end to prepare for the 2026 session if needed.

“Whether it’s housing, revitalization, renewable energy, or the budget, our focus is on using every tool we have to make Reno County a place where people want to live, work, and invest,” Partington said.

Partington talks about revitalization plan, housing and possible methane gas income  

AUGUSTA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs continued their strong summer campaign Tuesday night with an 11-2 road victory over the Kansas Cannons, improving their season record to 16-5.

Pryce Bender led the way on the mound for Hutchinson, earning the win with a five-inning performance in which he allowed just one run on four hits. The right-hander struck out four and walked only one in a composed outing.

Blake Seefeldt took the loss for the Cannons, surrendering six runs — five earned — over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six but allowed six hits, walked two, and hit three batters.

The Monarchs broke open a tight 1-1 contest in the top of the third. With two runners on and one out, Jake Gutierrez hit a grounder that was misplayed by shortstop Zeb Henry, allowing two runs to score and giving Hutchinson a 2-1 lead.

 </figure>AUGUSTA, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs continued their strong summer campaign Tuesday night with an 11-2 road victory over the Kansas Cannons, improving their season record to 16-5.Pryce Bender led the way on the mound for Hutchinson, earning the win with a five-inning performance in which he allowed just one run on four hits. The right-hander struck out four and walked only one in a composed outing.Blake Seefeldt took the loss for the Cannons, surrendering six runs — five earned — over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six but allowed six hits, walked two, and hit three batters.The Monarchs broke open a tight 1-1 contest in the top of the third. With two runners on and one out, Jake Gutierrez hit a grounder that was misplayed by shortstop Zeb Henry, allowing two runs to score and giving Hutchinson a 2-1 lead.Third baseman Joey Senstock sparked more offense in the fourth with a two-out RBI triple, and then added the decisive blow in the sixth with a three-run homer to left that pushed the Monarchs’ advantage to 6-1.Hutchinson added five more runs over the final three innings, aided by timely hitting and four walks from Cannons relievers. Tyson Vassart singled home a run in the ninth, and Gutierrez scored on a wild pitch earlier in the frame to cap the Monarchs' scoring.Bender got help from relievers Bryant Siemens and Whit Rhodes, who combined to finish the final four innings. Siemens struck out four in two innings of one-run ball, and Rhodes closed out the final two frames, working around a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to preserve the win.The Cannons (12-10-1) struggled to convert opportunities, stranding multiple runners in the late innings and hitting into two double plays.Hutchinson returns to action tonight versus the Wichita Black Sox. On Saturday night, they take on the Kingman Islanders in a game postponed from mid-June due to weather at Hobart-Detter Field in Carey Park. First pitch will be at 7pm.
