Hutchinson Public Schools has announced its 2026 Kansas Teacher of the Year nominees — Amanda Buethe of Faris Elementary and Michelle Goossen of Hutchinson High School.

The Kansas Teacher of the Year program celebrates outstanding educators from across the state who demonstrate exceptional skill, dedication, and impact in their classrooms and communities. The annual program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, promotes teaching excellence and highlights the essential role educators play in shaping the future of Kansas students.

Amanda Buethe: Celebrating Growth Beyond the Classroom A veteran educator with more than two decades of teaching experience, Amanda Buethe currently teaches second grade at Faris Elementary School. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Bethany College and a Master of Education from Wichita State University.

Buethe says her greatest joy comes from watching former students thrive long after they’ve left her classroom.

“I love celebrating their graduations, promotions, and even becoming parents—there’s nothing more rewarding than knowing you were a small part of their journey,” she said.

Buethe has taught in USD 308 for five years and has worked with students from second through twelfth grades. She holds endorsements in Elementary Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, English Language Arts, and Family and Consumer Sciences.

Buethe credits the teamwork within her school for her continued enthusiasm. “My colleagues, support staff, custodians, behavior support team, and administrators keep me motivated to give my best every day,” Buethe said.

Her advice to new teachers is simple but heartfelt.&nbsp;“Give yourself grace; growth takes time, and every day is a chance to begin again. Focus on what’s best for kids and everything else will fall into place” she said.&nbsp;

Michelle Goossen: Connecting Students to Agriculture and Real Life At Hutchinson High School, Michelle Goossen brings agriculture to life through hands-on learning and real-world connections. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and a Master’s in Agriculture Education and Communications from Kansas State University.

Goossen teaches Agriculture Education and serves as both a CASE (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) Master Teacher and the organization’s Professional Development Coordinator.

“This allows me to work with teachers from all over the country to gain ideas and share knowledge,” she said.

For Goossen, teaching is about more than content—it’s about connection. “Even though students might not go into a career in agriculture, they are consumers of agriculture for the rest of their lives,” she explained.

She takes pride in helping students see how agricultural literacy shapes daily decisions, from food production to environmental sustainability.

Honoring Excellence in Education Both Buethe and Goossen will represent Hutchinson Public Schools in the Kansas Teacher of the Year regional selection process, where honorees are chosen for their commitment to students, innovation in teaching, and community involvement.

The Kansas Teacher of the Year program will culminate in the statewide awards ceremony later this school year, celebrating educators who exemplify the spirit of teaching excellence across Kansas.

Kansas Apply Free Days will be held October 6–8, 2025, giving all Kansas residents—regardless of age or income—the chance to apply at no cost to any of the state’s 7 public universities, 19 community colleges, 6 technical colleges, and 21 private institutions that are members of the Kansas Independent College Association.

During these three days, eligible applicants can submit free applications for certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s degree programs. Graduate or mid-degree program applications are not included.

Students are encouraged to prepare their applications in advance, but they must wait until Monday, October 6 to submit in order to qualify for the waived fees. Only applications submitted between October 6 and 8 will be free. Any sent before or after that window will not be eligible for refunds.

Applicants using the Common Application should contact the admissions office of their chosen schools or review the official Apply Free Days Application Instructions for details.

All Kansas residents applying to undergraduate programs are eligible, including: •&nbsp;&nbsp;First-time freshmen •&nbsp;&nbsp;Transfer students •&nbsp; Returning students •&nbsp;&nbsp;Students seeking a second bachelor’s degree

Applicants for graduate programs are not eligible.

Kansas apply free days begin today

From agriculture to the arts to music, students in the Buhler School District are earning recognition at state and regional levels this fall. Superintendent Cindy Couchman highlighted several recent accomplishments during an update this week, calling them examples of the district’s “small school feel with big school opportunities.”&nbsp;

Among the standouts is Buhler High School senior Emily Hare, who won the Ag Challenge of Champions at the Kansas State Fair. The FFA competition tested her knowledge in livestock, crop identification, feed analysis, meat cuts, and industry practices. Along with the top prize, Hair earned a $3,000 scholarship. “It’s a very intense competition,” Couchman said. “We’re really proud of her, our FFA program, and our instructors. It takes a whole village with student success.”&nbsp;

Another student making headlines is Abby Cox, who attends Ad Astra Alternative Academy. Cox earned first place in both nonfiction and art categories in the Kansas Authors Club High School Division. Her nonfiction entry has since been featured on the district’s website. “It is a moving article, just beautiful,” Couchman said.&nbsp;

On the music front, the Buhler High School Marching Band captured first place at the Air Capital Marching Competition in Wichita and is competing at Emporia State University’s marching festival on Oct. 1. Couchman praised the dedication of students, staff, and families: “It’s a whole family event when you have a student out for band. They’re at school early in the morning, all summer long. It is a real commitment.”&nbsp;

Beyond celebrating individual achievements, Couchman emphasized the district’s broader focus on college and career readiness. She noted that Buhler consistently scores above state predictions for postsecondary success, with more than 70 percent of students deemed college- or career-ready. October is a busy month for career exposure, with freshmen taking the pre-ACT, juniors completing the WorkKeys exam, and students across grade levels participating in career fairs, college visits, and job site tours.&nbsp;

“Step one is helping students visualize themselves in a career or in college,” Couchman said. “Exposure is key, seeing what’s possible at an early age helps set that expectation.”&nbsp;

Couchman also shared the district’s efforts in student leadership development, from fourth and fifth graders applying to serve as “Cru Leaders” in elementary schools to high school students involved in Rise Up Reno County.&nbsp;

Despite the good news, the district is also navigating challenges with declining enrollment, tied to an 8 percent drop in Reno County’s birth rate. Class sizes remain strong at the high school and middle school levels, but smaller groups are entering the lower grades. Couchman said the district is watching the numbers closely and hopes housing developments in the area will help bring new families into the district.&nbsp;

“We're hopeful that that brings in some young families with kids. The housing study is an interesting study in Reno County right now, and we're hopeful that we are we have so many organizations working to fix it. Hopefully we start feeling the effects of that soon, inside our districts." said Couchman.

McPherson College is a great place to work, according to a new survey by the Great Colleges to Work For® program. The results, featured in a special edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, recognize McPherson College for the 11th consecutive year.

The results are based on a survey completed by 199 colleges nationwide. In total, only 76 institutions achieved recognition on the list for specific practices and policies. McPherson College was recognized in 4 categories, including compensation &amp; benefits, confidence in leadership, shared governance, and faculty experience.

“Supported by a dedicated community of employees, McPherson College continues to achieve significant milestones,” said President Michael Schneider. “With valuable input shaping the college’s 10-year strategic plan, employees are strengthening the college’s effort to build new innovative academic programs, campus facilities, and wellness initiatives, while providing the highest quality education and student experience.”

President Schneider points to some basic practices, such as the college’s compensation plan and benefits, including retirement contributions made after one year of employment, as reasons why people like working for McPherson College. Monthly all-campus meetings, called “huddles, where information is shared from across campus, foster community involvement. Initiatives such as training from the Kansas Leadership Center, which develops adaptive problem-solving skills, and community participation in developing the college’s strategic plan set McPherson College apart from other college campuses.

In a comment featured on the survey’s website, one McPherson College employee says, “At McPherson College, faculty and staff have opportunities to engage in the strategic planning of the college. It’s reassuring to know the direction and goals of the college and to feel you are a part of its advancement.”

McPherson College began the academic year by opening the Campus Commons, a 55,000-square-foot campus hub for student services. The new building is part of the college’s larger expansion effort, which has seen campus size increase by 20%. Nearly half of all existing campus buildings have been renovated, including all student residence halls, as well as the Holman Fieldhouse, home of Bulldog athletics; Melhorn Hall science labs; Mohler Hall classrooms; and computer labs across campus.

In August, the Higher Learning Commission reaffirmed McPherson College’s accreditation and invited the college to pursue the Open Pathway for its next 10-year accreditation cycle, signaling confidence in the college’s ability to meet its mission and maintain high institutional standards.

“All of our accomplishments and successes are due in large part to the unique persistence of the dedicated people who work here,” said President Schneider. “This national recognition is a reflection of the hardworking employees at McPherson College, who go out of their way not only to make McPherson College a great place to work but a world-class learning institution.”

Ad Astra Academies student earns two honors

Central Christian School is gearing up for a packed weekend as alumni, students and families return to campus for homecoming and reunion festivities.

By 8th grade, Kansas students complete an Individual Plan of Study (IPS) to guide high school coursework and career planning—a process that can feel overwhelming.&nbsp;Transfr VR&nbsp;provides hands-on, interactive experiences in skilled trades, healthcare, agriculture, cosmetology, and more, giving students a glimpse into local job opportunities and the skills required to succeed.

“Students are excited to explore careers using virtual reality,”&nbsp;said Ms. Gray.&nbsp;“The technology allows them to see in-demand jobs and potential salaries. Careers like correctional officers come up a lot, and students are curious to see what that entails. The&nbsp;VR&nbsp;experience is tailored to meet the demands of our local workforce.”

With legislative support, Kansas has allocated $320,000 in year one to pilot the program, supplemented by $160,000 in private matching funds from organizations including the Kansas Health Foundation, Kansas Farm Bureau, and Kansas Corn Growers Association.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson Launches Transfr VR Pilot

The USD 308 Board of Education moved forward with several key items during its regular meeting Monday evening at the district administration center.

The board passed a resolution for the 2025–2026 Local Option Budget, totaling $12,439,435.

In addition, board members approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Trinity United Methodist Church, setting terms for the district to provide bulk lunch services to Trinity’s Treasures Preschool and Childcare Center. Under the agreement, the district will supply about 20 meals per day when school is in session, at a cost of $5 per meal.

In other action, members approved the sale of two homes located at 2800 and 2804 Morris Road, both built by students through the Career and Technical Education Academy’s building trades program.

Additionally, the board approved $24,137 in wiring and software upgrades for 11 rooftop HVAC units at Hutchinson High School. The upgrade will bring the units onto the same system as the rest of the campus, eliminating the need to manage two separate systems.

The next meeting of the USD 308 Board of Education is scheduled for Sept. 22.

BOE approves local option budget

Two outstanding Kansas youth were recognized at the Kansas State Fair for their agricultural knowledge and leadership, as Emily Hare or Buhler High School and Ethan Petersilie of LaCrosse High School tied for first place in the 2025 Ag Challenge of Champions.

The statewide competition, hosted by the Kansas Fairs &amp; Festivals Association, brought together top 4-H and FFA members to test their expertise through livestock breed identification, crop and weed recognition, meat cuts, feed analysis, and a comprehensive written exam on agriculture.

Hare and Petersilie emerged from a competitive field, earning identical top scores. Organizers say their performance reflects not only academic excellence, but also a deep commitment to the future of Kansas agriculture.

As a result of their achievement, both winners will receive a $3,000 scholarship to support continued education and leadership development.

“The Challenge of Champions is designed to spotlight the best and brightest in Kansas youth agriculture,” said event coordinator Ty Lewick. “Emily and Ethan exemplify the passion, intelligence, and work ethic that will drive the industry forward.”

The Ag Challenge of Champions is held annually in partnership with the Kansas State Fair.

Board of Education to approve budget, upgrades to HVAC systems 

The Cosmosphere is entering the fall season with new hours, educational opportunities, and a variety of special events aimed at students, educators, and families. 

Sherry Treece, STEAM educator at the Cosmosphere,said that the museum is now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to allow for cleaning and maintenance. Regular hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

On Friday, Oct. 10, the Cosmosphere will host the Sphero Robotics Symposium, a free professional development day for teachers. Treece said "They're a great company. They have a bunch of different robots, and we actually have all of their robots." 

The event includes breakfast, lunch, breakout sessions on robotics, and a keynote by Cosmosphere CEO Jim Remar.&nbsp;

High school students in grades 9–12 will once again have the chance to take part in the Mark Cuban AI Boot Camp this fall. The bootcamp will take place over three consecutive Saturdays; Nov. 1, 8 and 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meals transportation assistance, and technology will be provided at no cost.  

Hosted virtually by Cuban himself, the camp gives students hands-on training in artificial intelligence.  

Cuban emphasized, “Our goal is to ensure that every interested student, regardless of background or resources, can explore AI and its limitless possibilities.”  Applications are encouraged from girls, students of color, first-generation collegegoers, and students from low-income backgrounds. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2025.     

Families can begin registering for the 2026 Cosmosphere Summer Camps starting on Sept. 1. Registrations made during Labor Day week receive a 10% discount. Treece encouraged families to consider giving camp experiences as gifts, noting that each year’s programs build on the last. A highlight next summer will be the return of the travel camp to Houston. 

The next Coffee at the Cosmo event will take place on Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. Dr. Ryan Hale will present on the psychology of space exploration. Attendees will enjoy refreshments, including the Cosmosphere’s popular coffee cake. 

The Cosmosphere’s renovations are nearly complete, featuring new interactive areas such as the Rocket Lab classroom, a wind tunnel, a lunar walk simulation, and a docking module display. One of the newest additions to the artifact collection is a Falcon 9 rocket engine from SpaceX.

Cosmosphere unveils new hours and education opportunities

As the drone industry continues to advance and develop new regulations at a rapid pace,&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina's</a>&nbsp;Applied Aviation Research Center,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/research-training/applied-aviation-research-center/">or AARC</a>, prepares the next generation of drone pilots to be Federal Aviation Administration compliant through world-class uncrewed aircraft systems training and education.

The Federal Aviation Administration, or FAA, is planning new regulations aimed at standardizing operations beyond the visual line of sight for commercial drones. Currently, Part 107 regulations with the FAA do not permit drones to fly beyond the visual line of sight of the operator without a special waiver.

The new set of regulations will allow for more expansive uncrewed aircraft systems, or UAS, operations beyond the visual line of sight, impacting all industries, including agriculture, engineering and public safety.

Upcoming webinar explains proposed UAS regulations

With this immense change coming to the industry, the Applied Aviation Research Center will provide a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/professional-education/uncrewed-training/part-108-webinar.html">free informational webinar</a>&nbsp;explaining the proposed regulations on Sept. 4. The webinar will discuss the new regulations, including guidance on detect-and-avoid, minimum operational standards, certification and training requirements, and integration into the national airspace.

"The AARC has a close connection to the FAA from our years of UAS experience," said Kurt Carraway, executive director of the Applied Aviation Research Center. "As the first university to receive a waiver of beyond visual line-of-sight UAS operations back in 2018, we have proven to be detailed and system-oriented with our operations. Training and operations on the new set of regulations are the next step in K-State Salina's strategic goals that enable technologies to advance us in our work and connect the world in new ways."

Currently, Part 107 regulations with the FAA do not permit drones to fly beyond the visual line of sight of the operator without a special waiver.The new set of regulations will allow for more expansive uncrewed aircraft systems, or UAS, operations beyond the visual line of sight, impacting all industries, including agriculture, engineering and public safety.Upcoming webinar explains proposed UAS regulationsWith this immense change coming to the industry, the Applied Aviation Research Center will provide a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/professional-education/uncrewed-training/part-108-webinar.html">free informational webinar</a>&nbsp;explaining the proposed regulations on Sept. 4. K-State Salina to hold webinar for drone pilots on proposed FAA changes

Kansas State University, Iowa State University and University College Dublin are building veterinary medicine partnerships and creating global academic and research collaborations among the three organizations.

The presidents of all three universities — Kansas State University President Richard Linton, Iowa State University President Wendy Wintersteen and University College Dublin President Orla Feely — signed a Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding on Friday, Aug. 22, at the One Health Ag Tech Summit in Ireland.

The agreement among the three universities focuses on building academic exchange, cooperation and collaboration with the veterinary medicine colleges at each institution.

"This partnership will provide tremendous value to our College of Veterinary Medicine," said Beth Davis, interim dean of K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine. "As a next-generation land-grant university, forging important partnerships like this helps our K-State veterinary medicine students, researchers and faculty members to do good in Kansas and across the world. We look forward to working with our collaborators at Iowa State University and University College Dublin."

The signing event and One Health Ag Tech Summit are connected with the&nbsp;<a href="https://collegefootballireland.com/games/k-state-vs-iowa-state/">Aer Lingus College Football Classic</a>, which will occur Saturday, Aug. 23, when the K-State football team faces Iowa State in the season kickoff game.

The academic exchange agreement focuses on promoting the teaching and research activities of each institution while also deepening the understanding of the economic, cultural and social environment of each institution.

"Today's agreement signing is the culmination of highly valued collaborative efforts from all institutions involved to further enhance the educational experience for our students," said University College Dublin President Orla Feely.

Dan&nbsp;Grooms, the Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State, said the opportunity for collaboration on a global level is vital for addressing issues such as antimicrobial resistance.

"Antimicrobial resistance impacts animals, humans, the environment and plants. There are valuable perspectives that come from conversations with people around the world to understand how we combat antimicrobial resistance," Grooms said. "The practicalities of what can and cannot be done are different in other countries, which is why we must think of this at a global level."

Through the newly formed partnership, the three organizations are exploring many ways to collaborate, including:

• Promoting institutional exchanges by inviting faculty and staff to participate in a variety of teaching and research activities as well as professional development.

• Receiving undergraduate and graduate students for periods of study and research.&nbsp;

•&nbsp;Organizing coordinated teaching activities.

•&nbsp;Organizing symposia, conferences, short courses and other meetings on academic and research issues.

•&nbsp;Carrying out joint research and continuing education programs.

•&nbsp;Exchanging information related to developments in teaching, student development and research at each institution.&nbsp;

"Having College of Veterinary Medicine students visit University College Dublin and learn about veterinary medicine in a well-established program and understand the profession in a different culture will greatly benefit our students," Davis said. "Additionally, having students from University College Dublin or Iowa State visit K-State will build on our ability to exchange knowledge and skills that are well established throughout our curriculum, particularly in the fourth-year clinical rotation."

The partnership agreement signing was part of the One Health Ag Tech Summit, an international event hosted by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.enterprise-ireland.com/en/">Enterprise Ireland</a>. The summit is from Aug. 20-23 and has brought together nearly 90 researchers, faculty members, industry leaders and innovative entrepreneurs from the U.S. and Ireland. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds have also participated in the summit.

The summit has highlighted the three universities — Kansas State University, Iowa State University and University College Dublin — and focused on shared interests and emerging opportunities in the fields of agricultural technology/digital agriculture and One Health. One Health is a multidisciplinary approach that recognizes the interconnected health of people, animals, plants and their shared environments.

Throughout the four-day summit, participants have engaged in meaningful dialogue, facilitated expert knowledge exchange and cultivated long-term partnerships.

A commitment to collaborate

Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) is expanding its agricultural education offerings with the launch of a new John Deere Technician Program, created through a partnership with PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision Equipment.&nbsp;

The program, the second&nbsp;in Kansas, will allow students to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree while receiving specialized training to become certified John Deere service technicians.&nbsp;

“This has been a project in the works for several years,” said Sheldon Stewart, department co-chair of the Agriculture, Business, Computers &amp; Technology Department at HutchCC. “When students complete the two-year program, they’ll graduate with both a degree and John Deere certification, ready to step into the workforce.”&nbsp;

The program is designed to go beyond the college’s existing one-year diesel program. During the first year, students will complete HutchCC’s traditional curriculum. In the second year, they will transition to John Deere-specific training, working directly on equipment and technology at PrairieLand Partners’ dealership near the U.S. 50/K-61 junction. The dealership is expanding its facilities to accommodate the program.&nbsp;

Students will gain hands-on experience alongside certified technicians both in the shop and in the field. Each student must be sponsored by a John Deere dealership, which commits to hiring the student for at least two years after graduation.&nbsp;

“This is truly a hands-on, career-driven program,” Stewart said. “Students come out with little to no debt, a high-demand certification, and a good-paying career that can last a lifetime.”&nbsp;

Industry leaders say the program addresses a critical workforce shortage. PrairieLand Partners and AgriVision, which operate dealerships across Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, are seeking to expand their technician workforce by as much as 25 percent.&nbsp;

Stewart noted that the program also helps strengthen ties between HutchCC and the agricultural community. “Farmers rely on this technology to keep producing, and our students will be trained to keep that equipment running,” he said. “Agriculture isn’t going away, and this program ensures our graduates are prepared for the future—whether that’s with autonomous tractors, electric-powered combines, or other emerging technology.”&nbsp;

The first class of John Deere Technician students began on Wednesday at HutchCC’s South Campus near Yoder, with specialized training taking place at PrairieLand Partners' expanded Hutchinson facility.&nbsp;

The Mark Cuban Foundation, in partnership with Cosmosphere International Science Education Center and Space Museum, will host a no-cost Artificial Intelligence Bootcamp for high school students in Hutchinson this fall. The program is open to students in grades 9–12 and will take place over three consecutive Saturdays – Nov. 1, 8, and 15, 2025 – from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meals, transportation assistance, and technology will be provided at no cost.&nbsp;

Cosmosphere, Mark Cuban Foundation to host free AI bootcamp this fall

Hutchinson Public Schools&nbsp;has launched the new school year on a high note, with district leaders reporting a smooth start for both staff and students.&nbsp;

However, a major topic this semester will be the upcoming bond election, set for Nov. 4. District leaders say the proposal addresses critical needs ranging from early childhood education to middle school transitions.&nbsp;

USD 308 Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson explained that the district currently operates pre-kindergarten programs at eight different sites, a system many families find confusing. The bond would consolidate early childhood education at a central location, ensuring smoother entry into kindergarten.&nbsp;

The proposal also includes building a new middle school to house grades six through eight, reducing the number of school transitions students face. “Relationships are key during these developmental years,” Johnson said. “Fewer transitions mean stronger continuity for students and parents.”&nbsp;

The district plans to build on land already owned at 23rd and Severance, moving the current soccer field to the high school campus and partnering with the city on new baseball and practice fields.&nbsp;

The bond proposal totals $109 million, less than the inflation-adjusted cost of the district’s last major bond in 2006. Officials estimate the tax increase would be about five mills, or under $5 per month on a $100,000 home.&nbsp;

“This is about preparing for the future of our students and our community,” Johnson said. “The last bond created opportunities that still benefit students today, not just in Hutchinson but across the region. We see this as the next step in building excellence.”&nbsp;

If approved, the bond would also repurpose existing facilities. Hutchinson Middle School 8 would become a hub for student support services, with early childhood programs located on the first floor. Other properties, including Hutchinson Middle School 7 and district offices, may be sold or redeveloped. Johnson said several local organizations have already expressed interest.&nbsp;

“I know the city council is working very hard to take care of blight in our town, and USD 308, Board of Education does not want to add to that. So, there would be a plan for all of those buildings,” Johnson said. “These facilities are valuable and can serve new purposes in the community.”&nbsp;

Dr. Johnson emphasized that the bond is not just about infrastructure, but about preparing students for long-term success. From kindergarten readiness to career and technical education, they say the goal is to create a seamless learning experience.&nbsp;

“Our schools are strong at the elementary and high school levels,” Dr. Johnson said. “This bond allows us to strengthen the middle years and early childhood, ensuring every student is ready for the future.”&nbsp;
