Buhler USD 313 sets date for new student enrollment 

The local Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting Monday evening, electing new leadership, reviewing upcoming budget deadlines, and approving salary increases ahead of the new school year.

The meeting began with the election of Lance as board president and another member as vice president. Both positions were approved by unanimous votes, with the newly elected president immediately taking over proceedings.

New Human Resources Director Julie Strong introduced herself to the board, sharing her extensive background in education, from early childhood through community college administration. “Education is my passion,” Strong said. “The one thing I want people to say when I walk away is that I had the students’ best interests at heart.”

Superintendent Dr. Johnson outlined important upcoming dates, including the district’s convocation event set for August 6, where staff will gather ahead of the first day of classes. Online enrollment is now open, and the district is continuing to accept applications for out-of-district students, with nine new students approved so far.

Abby Grant, the district’s Director of Finance, presented the budget timeline for the 2025-2026 school year. The board plans to hold its building needs assessment and set hearings for the revenue neutral rate at the August 11 meeting. Final budget approval is anticipated by the August 25 meeting, with the state deadline for budget submission set for September 20.

Board members also received an update from the bond executive committee, which has been working to prepare the community for an upcoming bond issue aimed at improving district facilities and learning environments.

In action items, the board unanimously approved district handbooks for the 2025-2026 school year, which now include an updated cell phone and earbud policy. They also approved administrative and classified salary increases totaling approximately $480,000. This means classified staff wages will see an average raise of about 4 percent, bringing the starting hourly wage to over $16 for many positions — a move board members said is crucial for retention and recruitment.

“We want our staff to feel appreciated and able to make a livable wage,” one board member noted, adding that the district is nearly fully staffed for paraprofessionals, custodial, and food service roles. A few elementary teacher positions remain open, but administrators expressed optimism about filling them before the start of classes.

The board wrapped up its meeting with updates on the transition to publishing legal notices in the Hutchinson Tribune once it begins regular print publication. Board members thanked staff for clear communication to families about enrollment and start times.

The next regular Board of Education meeting is scheduled for July 28. .

USD 308 Board of Education holds reorganization meeting and prepares for new school year. 

A 2025 graduate of Central Christian School (CCS), Nathan Reed, has earned national recognition as a National Merit Finalist and Scholarship Recipient — placing him among the top 2,500 students selected from more than 15,000 finalists across the country.

Reed’s achievement highlights an outstanding academic and extracurricular record that includes a perfect 4.0 GPA and an impressive ACT score of 35. In addition to his academic success, he demonstrated leadership as the captain of CCS’s 2024 State Champion Scholars Bowl Team and contributed as a team member of the 2025 Class 1A Boys Golf State Championship team.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation awarded Reed a $2,500 scholarship in recognition of his exceptional performance, application, and recommendations. He plans to continue his academic journey at the University of Tulsa this fall on a full-ride scholarship.

“Way to go, Nathan! Your hard work, leadership, and academic excellence are an inspiration to us all,” CCS said in a statement. “We will be praying for you as you begin this next chapter.”

District officials recommend using a computer rather than a tablet or phone to avoid technical issues. For those without access to a computer, each school will have devices available during the in-person enrollment event .

In-person enrollment will be held on Monday, July 29, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at all USD 308 schools. 

Open houses will be on Aug. 11 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at each school, except for Hutchinson High School, which will instead offer self-guided tours during in-person enrollment on July 29.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Students from Buhler and Lyons high schools are among 43 students statewide to earn the 2025 Kansas Agriculture Skills and Competencies Certificate, awarded by the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

20 students from Buhler High School and four from Lyons High School received the distinction, which recognizes excellence in agricultural education, leadership, and career readiness. Students completed a rigorous program that includes classroom instruction, supervised agricultural experience (SAE), and active participation in FFA. A minimum 2.5 GPA across all coursework is also required.

Buhler's honorees include Eliza Aldrich, Cassidy Banning, Ethan Barrett, Aivlynn Ehmke, Gage Elliott, Kyler Gillespie, Will Hanen, Brayden Henry, Payton Huffman, Brayden Leiker, Rachael Mourn, Madelyn Poepperling, Maecy Rosenberger, Ella Sanborn, Logan Schmidt, Scott Schweizer, Juliette Shank, Logan Snyder, Talon Sullivant and Jake Winters.

From Lyons High School, JT Denton, Peyton Kruse, Will Miller and Deacon Showalter earned certificates.

Ag Minute:  Farm Service Agency county committees

A proposed district-wide cell phone policy aimed at reducing classroom distractions and promoting responsible technology use was presented to the USD 308 Board of Education on Monday night—but a final decision will have to wait.

Superintendent Dawn Johnson introduced the new guidelines, which cover the use of cell phones, headphones, AirPods, and earbuds across all grade levels. The policy was drafted following a review of survey feedback from parents, students, and staff, which highlighted concerns about classroom interruptions and inconsistent enforcement.

Under the proposed policy, elementary students would be required to keep phones and headphones turned off and stored in backpacks during the entire school day. Middle school students would follow a similar rule, with devices kept in backpacks or lockers. High school and alternative school students would be allowed to carry phones but would be expected to keep them out of sight and on silent during class. They would be permitted to use devices before and after school, during lunch, and between classes.

The policy also includes exceptions for students with documented medical or educational needs, as outlined in IEPs or 504 plans.

Board members expressed support for a more structured policy but raised additional concerns—particularly about smartwatches and recording glasses. While there was unanimous agreement that recording glasses posed privacy issues, opinions differed on smartwatches, which some students use for fitness tracking or health monitoring.

Due to these unresolved questions, the board voted unanimously to table the policy discussion until its next meeting.

The proposed policy remains under consideration, with further revisions possible before a final vote.

High school seniors and college students can learn about career opportunities in precision agriculture, data analysis and variable rate application equipment during Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">Smart Farm Challenge Precision Agriculture Workshop</a>&nbsp;from July 27-29.

Workshop participants will engage in hands-on activities, including flying drones, learning about soil and plant sensors, and collecting field data. There will also be opportunities for participants to engage with industry partners to connect what they are learning to the wide range of precision agriculture career fields.

As many as 30 participants will be learning from faculty at the agronomy facilities and farms on the Manhattan campus, including all meals and housing in the residence halls.

Students of any skill level or familiarity with precision agriculture and agronomy are welcome to attend. The cost of the workshop is $50. Registration is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">online</a>&nbsp;and will close on July 11 or when it's full.

USD 308 Director of Communications Stacy Goss says the district is taking full advantage of the student-free months to deep-clean every classroom and tackle major maintenance projects. One big item on the list — Don Michael Field will be closed June 23rd through July 3rd for track repainting. Goss says the field is well-used by the community and asks folks to stay off during that time.

Ferris Elementary is also getting a facelift this summer with new flooring, fresh paint, and new blinds. The district rotates building improvements each summer, and Ferris is this year’s focus.

Goss tells us, "It’s not just cleaning desks — we’re deep-cleaning, fixing, painting, upgrading. The work never really stops."

Meanwhile, USD 308’s free summer lunch program is in full swing. Kids 18 and under can receive free grab-and-go meals at several locations — no paperwork or income requirements needed. Goss says last summer, the district served more than 66,000 meals, and they expect similar numbers this year.

Enrollment for the fall opens online on July 11, with reminders going out via email, text, social media, and the district app. Open houses will be scheduled closer to the start of the school year once all summer projects are wrapped up.

International Student Exchange (ISE) is one of several organizations that facilitate these life-changing opportunities, helping match students from around the world with American host families and schools. Through ISE, students come to the U.S. to live with volunteer host families for a semester or full academic year, attending local high schools and immersing themselves in American culture. 

The organization works with students from over 40 countries, placing them in communities of all sizes. Host families provide a bedroom, meals, and a welcoming environment. The students arrive with their own spending money and health insurance, and local coordinators provide support throughout the year to ensure a successful experience. 

“A lot of people remember exchange students from when they were in school, but they don’t always know how it all works or how to get involved,” said Mashaela White of ISE in a recent interview. “We’re always looking for host families who are ready to share their lives and learn from a young person from another part of the world.” 

“The benefits are truly mutual,” White explained. “Families get to experience a new culture from the comfort of their own home, and students get a chance to build lifelong relationships and see America in a personal way.”

TOPEKA, Kan. — The Kansas Board of Regents on Thursday approved tuition and fee rates for the upcoming fiscal year at the state’s six public universities, emphasizing a continued focus on affordability and student success.

“The Regents’ strategic plan emphasizes affordability for Kansas families and success for students in our institutions,” said KBOR Chair Carl Ice in a statement. “These tuition rates balance those priorities by keeping costs as low as possible while ensuring that state universities can continue to help students succeed in the classroom and in their careers after graduation.”

The decision aligns with the Board’s strategic plan, Building a Future, which aims to improve student outcomes while expanding access to financial aid. According to KBOR, on-time graduation rates at state universities have increased by 10.2 percentage points over the last five years. Entry-level wages for graduates have risen more than 15% since 2020, and the total amount of need-based aid, grants, and scholarships has grown by 28%.

Individual tuition rate changes for each university are expected to be posted on the Board’s website.

The six state universities governed by KBOR include the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Wichita State University, Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University and Pittsburg State University.

Regents approve tuition and fee rates 

A statewide micro-internship program is opening new doors for Kansas businesses to connect with college talent, thanks to a unique initiative supported by the Kansas Board of Regents and Department of Commerce.

Rick Kraus, Career Services Coordinator at Hutchinson Community College, joined BW's morning radio show this week to talk about how micro-internships are reshaping work-based learning across the state.

Unlike traditional internships or apprenticeships, micro-internships are short-term, project-based opportunities that typically last between 20 and 25 hours. These internships are often remote, and students are paid upon completing a specific assignment for the business, nonprofit or entrepreneur that hires them.

“This is a great way for employers to get valuable work done while helping students build their resumes,” Kraus said. “And with grant funding covering the first five projects, there’s no cost to the employer to get started.”

The program, launched in 2021, is part of the Kansas Board of Regents’ “Building a Future” strategic plan. It partners with national micro-internship platform Parker Dewey to match employers with students from Kansas public colleges and universities.

Eligible businesses must operate within state lines. While students from any public Kansas institution can apply for internships, employers have the option to restrict applications to a specific school — such as Hutchinson Community College.

“Say you’re a business in Hutch and you want a marketing intern from K-State — you can do that,” Krause explained. “But if you want to give the opportunity to a local Hutch CC student, you can set that preference when you post the job.”

After the initial five free projects, employers can continue using the platform at a cost of $500 per project. Of that, $450 goes directly to the student, and the remaining $50 supports administrative fees paid to Parker Dewey, the company that manages micro-internships nationwide.&nbsp;

Kraus emphasized that most micro-internships are flexible and remote, allowing students to work on their own schedule — even late at night or around class and sports commitments. Projects can range from data entry and social media planning to research and content development.

“It's really a win-win,” he said. “Students gain experience and employers get meaningful work done.”

Micro-Internship program benefits businesses and students 

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. — Inman native, Peter Buller, was one of three graduating seniors to receive the prestigious Thresher Award, Bethel College’s highest academic honor, at the school’s annual Awards Convocation in May.

Buller was recognized in both Bible and religion and music, a rare distinction that capped a standout academic and artistic career at the North Newton liberal arts college. He graduated May 18 with a degree in Bible and religion and a minor in music.

“Peter’s seminar project represented the culmination of an outstanding academic career at Bethel College,” Peter Goerzen, chair of the Bible and religion department said, in a citation delivered on behalf of himself and colleague Dr. Trent Voth. “He has contributed insights reflective of careful and mature theological discernment and a commitment to Jesus Christ and his body, the church.”

Goerzen praised Buller’s “warmth, patient respect, and self-aware curiosity,” adding that Buller made a lasting impact beyond the classroom as a tutor, teaching assistant and researcher. “We will especially miss the graduate-level research assistance Peter has provided,” he said.

In music, Buller was equally active, participating in both vocal and instrumental ensembles and completing a senior recital on oboe and piano.

“Peter perfectly embodies our vision for Bethel graduates,” said Dr. Christina Liu, associate professor of music. “His work ethic, leadership, kindness and musical passion have touched the lives of those around him.”

The Thresher Award is given annually to graduating seniors who demonstrate exceptional academic performance and distinguished senior projects. Also honored this year were Emil Benavides of Stockton, for forensics, and Gracie Higgins of Tacoma, Washington, for art.

Bethel College, founded in 1887, is the oldest Mennonite college in North America and a recognized Truth, Community Healing and Transformation (TCHT) Campus Center.

The Cosmosphere, an international science education center&nbsp;and space museum in Hutchinson, Kansas, will form a Student Advisory Board in the 2025-2026 school year. 

The Board, which will consist of students from every high school in Reno County will meet monthly throughout the school year. At these meetings, the Board will provide the Cosmosphere’s President with valuable feedback about the institution’s ongoing efforts in its educational programs, museum installations, films, field trips, and more. 

“Since 1962, the Cosmosphere has worked to inspire the future through space exploration. As we continue this important mission, input from tomorrow’s leaders will become increasingly vital,” said Cosmosphere President and CEO Jim Remar. 

“Valuable insight from the Student Advisory Board will help further solidify the Cosmosphere as a leader in science education.”  

The Cosmosphere will begin accepting applications for its Student Advisory Board from Reno County high school students in early August.

The McPherson Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee is proud to announce that Karson Schierling, a graduate of Inman High School, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Agriculture Future of America (AFA) Scholarship for McPherson County. This scholarship is made possible through the Ag Committee’s partnership with AFA, an organization dedicated to cultivating the next generation of agricultural leaders.

Since 2000, the McPherson Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee has actively raised funds to support local students in their pursuit of higher education in agriculture-related fields. To date, they have awarded 37 full scholarships, helping young leaders build a strong foundation for their careers. The scholarship is open to high school graduates and college undergraduates pursuing a four-year degree in agriculture and related programs.

Karson has demonstrated exceptional dedication to agriculture and leadership, balancing his academic and extracurricular activities with work on the family farm. He assists his family in the operation of a wholesale and retail beef business, has served as an officer in FFA, and has been involved in the trap shooting team, Inman film crew, scholars bowl team, as well as playing football, baseball, and golf. Additionally, he is a founding member of the IHS BBQ Club. This fall, Karson will begin his journey at Kansas State University, where he will major in Agribusiness.

As part of his scholarship, Karson will receive $3,200 toward tuition, fees, and books, along with fully funded participation in the AFA Leaders Conference, scheduled for November 6-9, 2025, in Kansas City, Missouri—an additional value of $1,250.

Elizabeth Banuelos, a McPherson High School graduate, has been awarded a Leaders Conference Scholarship and will be attending the AFA Leadership Conference. Elizabeth plans to attend Kansas State University to pursue studies in Agronomy, Horticulture, and Business Administration.

The AFA Leaders Conference is a premier leadership development experience designed to bridge the gap between college and career for undergraduate students studying agriculture and food systems. Through this transformative program, students will build essential skills in relationship development, systems thinking, collaboration, cultural and interpersonal intelligence, and career management.

USD 308 Board of Education to hold special meeting 

 Ellie Foos, a senior at Hutchinson High School, who graduated on Sunday, was the school’s only student completing the full International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma program — a milestone capping off 13 years in the USD 308 school district.

Foos, who has attended Hutchinson public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade, is recognized not only for her academic achievements but also for her strong commitment to community service and leadership.

A standout on the tennis court, Foos qualified for the state tournament in both her junior and senior years. Off the court, she has been deeply involved in local and state youth initiatives. She volunteers through Rise Up Reno and serves on the Youth Philanthropy Council, helping to direct charitable efforts in the community.

She also holds positions on the Youth Advisory Board at the Hutchinson Public Library and formerly served on the Youth City Council. Her civic engagement extends statewide through her role with the Kansas Youth Prevention Action Council (KYPAC), where she advocates on behalf of Kansas youth at both the state and national levels.

This fall, Foos will attend the University of Kansas, where she has been accepted into the Honors Program and the prestigious LEAD (Legal Education Accelerated Degree) program. The LEAD track enables students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor in just six years. Foos plans to pursue a career in law, aiming to combine her passion for advocacy with a legal education.

“I’m excited to continue using my voice to support and uplift others,” Foos said. “The IB program has prepared me for the challenges ahead, and I look forward to building on what I’ve learned here in Hutchinson.”

She volunteers through Rise Up Reno and serves on the Youth Philanthropy Council, helping to direct charitable efforts in the community.She also holds positions on the Youth Advisory Board at the Hutchinson Public Library and formerly served on the Youth City Council. Her civic engagement extends statewide through her role with the Kansas Youth Prevention Action Council (KYPAC), where she advocates on behalf of Kansas youth at both the state and national levels.This fall, Foos will attend the University of Kansas, where she has been accepted into the Honors Program and the prestigious LEAD (Legal Education Accelerated Degree) program. The LEAD track enables students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor in just six years. HHS senior completes full International Baccalaureate diploma program  

McPHERSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College will launch a new Industrial Mechanical Maintenance – Certificate A program at its McPherson Outreach Center beginning in the 2025-26 academic year.

The program is designed to provide students with foundational skills in manufacturing engineering technology, including electrical and electronic systems, automation, fluid power and mechanical maintenance.

The certificate is intended for students pursuing careers in modern manufacturing and serves as a direct pathway into the college’s Automation Engineer Technology associate degree program. Graduates will be prepared to support engineers and technicians in calibrating, modifying and maintaining automated systems, including those used in robotics and advanced manufacturing.

Tuition is $131 per credit hour. High school students may qualify for free tuition through the Excel in Career and Technical Education waiver.

HutchCC launches new Industrial Maintenance Program in McPherson

 The Nickerson High School forensics team made school history at the 3A state tournament held May 2-3 at Maize High School, bringing home a team trophy for the first time since records began in the 1980s.

Competing with a full slate of 16 entries across just seven students, the Panthers placed third overall in the state, earning 287 sweepstakes points — the highest total during the current seniors’ tenure.

In Lincoln-Douglas debate on Friday, senior Haley McGill and sophomore Ellery Stapleton both advanced to the semifinal round after defeating Lyons debaters. In a Nickerson-versus-Nickerson final, McGill took first place and Stapleton placed second.

Saturday’s speech events saw all seven students compete: freshman Pollyann Frank (Poetry, Program of Oral Interpretation); sophomores Will Barkley (Informative, Poetry, Impromptu), Abby Dater (Humorous Solo, Prose), and Stapleton (Informative, Extemporaneous Speaking); and seniors Alec Brown (Informative, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu), McGill (Original Oration, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu), and Aziza Tuichieva (Informative).

Eleven entries advanced to semifinals, with four concluding their state runs there. Stapleton finished 10th in Extemporaneous Speaking, McGill was 10th in Impromptu, and Barkley placed 9th in Poetry and 7th in Informative.

Seven entries moved on to the final round. Barkley placed 6th in Impromptu; McGill was 6th in Oration and 3rd in Extemporaneous; Tuichieva earned 2nd in Informative; and Brown claimed 2nd in Extemporaneous and 1st place in both Informative and Impromptu.

“At the beginning of the season I gave the team three goals,” Bethany Jenkins, Head Coach said. “We wanted to qualify as many kids for state as possible, get a full state entry despite our small numbers, and contend for a state trophy. The kids really met every single goal this season.”

Seven of the nine team members qualified for state. The 16th entry was secured at the final regular-season tournament, and the Panthers edged out Halstead — who had beaten them at league — for the third-place finish.

“To say I’m proud would be an understatement,” Jenkins added.&nbsp;

BUHLER, KS — It’s been a whirlwind of speeches, scripts, and success for Buhler&nbsp;High School’s forensics team, which placed an impressive fifth overall out of 34 schools at the recent state competition. The team brought home multiple honors, including three individual state championships, and demonstrated the dedication and talent that comes from countless hours of preparation.&nbsp;

Leading the team’s standout performance were Chase Beals and Henry Trumpp, who were crowned state champions in duet acting. Known for their presence in the Buhler  Singers, the pair’s dynamic chemistry and theatrical flair earned top marks in one of the most competitive categories.&nbsp;

Another shining moment came from Kieron Bradley, who took the top spot in Lincoln-Douglas debate — a one-on-one format that emphasizes critical thinking, argumentation, and on-the-spot reasoning.&nbsp;

In addition to the state titles, the team saw several other strong finishes:&nbsp;

“These kids work incredibly hard,” said&nbsp;Cindy Couchman, Buhler Superintendent of Schools . “If you’ve ever had a student involved in debate or forensics, you know what goes into it — hours of after-school practice, constant research, and even rehearsing in the hallways. We’re incredibly proud of them.”&nbsp;

Much of the team’s success is credited to their coach, Dakota Yates, whose guidance has helped foster a culture of excellence. “We’re very fortunate to have Dakota on staff,” Couchman said.&nbsp;

Debate and Forensics may not always get the spotlight, but educators stress their long-term value. “It’s one of those activities that flies under the radar, but it builds skills that last a lifetime — public speaking, critical thinking, confidence. It prepares students not just for college, but for life.” added Couchman.&nbsp;

Buhler forensics places fifth at state, has three state champs

Topeka, Kan. – Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, today, announced the overall winners of the financial literacy essay contest sponsored by the Securities Division of the Kansas Department of Insurance.  

Earlier this year, the Department granted $10,000 each to three organizations for a financial literacy essay contest. Jobs for America’s Graduates Kansas, Junior Achievement of Kansas, and the Kansas Council for Economic Education each entered a selection of essays from Kansas students who participated in their financial literacy programs offered in over 200 high schools across the state. 

The students with the top three essays from each organization were awarded a share of $10,000 in scholarships. The first-place essay from each organization then advanced to compete for an overall contest winner, and a share of an additional $10,000.  

The contest finalists and their awards are: 1st Place, $5,000 – Anusha Chaturvedi, Olathe North High School (KCEE) 2nd Place, $3,000 – Joel Umana Jimenez, Newton High School (JAG-K) 3rd Place, $2,000 – Cora Genovese, Washburn Rural High School (Junior Achievement)

“This year’s winners showed strong understanding of investment fraud red flags and what steps to take to stop scammers,” said Schmidt. “Congratulations to all the winners this year, and I encourage them to use what they have learned to help others.”  

The winning students receive their scholarships in addition to the $5,000 scholarship they won in the first round of the contest. The students receive the award money in the form of a 529 savings account to use for the advancement of their education.

Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt awards financial literacy scholarships

NEWTON, Kan. — USD 373 has launched a Facilities Master Planning project in collaboration with RSP, a Kansas-based firm known for its expertise in school and community planning. The initiative aims to develop a long-term strategy for the district’s facilities by engaging a diverse group of stakeholders and analyzing key data.

Since November 2024, the district’s planning group—composed of community members, educators and other stakeholders—has met monthly to evaluate current facility conditions, enrollment trends and educational needs. Their work is intended to provide the Board of Education with data-driven recommendations for the future of USD 373’s facilities.

Community members are encouraged to attend an upcoming engagement session to learn more about the group’s findings and offer feedback. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, at Chisholm Middle School.

For those unable to attend in person, the district will launch an online Social PinPoint survey the evening of May 14. The survey will remain open through May 28, allowing the broader community to share their perspectives and help shape the district’s next steps.
