HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community College will welcome Grammy Award–winning trumpeter Brian Lynch as the featured headliner for the 51st Annual Bryce Luty Jazz Festival, bringing a nationally recognized artist to campus for a two-day celebration of jazz education and performance.

The festival’s public concert is scheduled for Friday, February 6, at 7 p.m. at the Stringer Fine Arts Center. Lynch will perform alongside the HutchCC Concert Jazz Band and the Bryce Luty All-Star Band under the direction of Dr. Jack Cassidy.

Lynch is widely regarded as one of the leading trumpeters in contemporary jazz, with a career that includes touring and recording with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver, and genre-spanning artist Prince. His appearance continues the festival’s tradition of pairing elite professional musicians with student ensembles for both performance and instruction.

Tickets for the public concert are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for students. HutchCC students and staff are admitted free with a valid ID. Advance reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling 620-665-3503.

In addition to the concert, the Bryce Luty Jazz Festival begins Thursday, February 5, featuring two days of intensive clinics for middle school and high school students from across Kansas. Participating clinicians include Lynch, Dr. Emma Taylor of Millikin University, and Dr. Kurt Reeder, offering students hands-on instruction and mentorship from accomplished jazz educators and performers.

College officials say the festival continues to play a vital role in sustaining jazz education in Kansas by connecting students with professional artists and fostering the next generation of musicians.

Brian Lynch to headline 51st annual Bryce Luty Jazz Festival

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Newly elected Lindsay Hatfield will take her seat on the Hutchinson USD 308 Board of Education for the first time Monday night, bringing with her a parent’s perspective, deep local ties, and a focus on rebuilding trust with the community following last year’s failed school bond.

Hatfield, a Hutchinson native and Buhler High School graduate, was elected to an at-large seat in November. After leaving Kansas for college and starting a family, she and her husband chose to return to Hutchinson — a move she describes as a “boomerang” homecoming.

“I’m raising Salthawks,” Hatfield said. “My kids go to school here, and I’m really invested in this community and this district.”

Hatfield is the parent of two children who attend Allen STEM Magnet School, where she also serves on the school’s PTO board. She said her experience as a parent and volunteer influenced her decision to run for the board, emphasizing the importance of having decision-makers who are directly invested in local schools.

Allen STEM Magnet School, she noted, offers specialized programming in science, technology, engineering and math and is open to students throughout the district and beyond. One highlight, Hatfield said, is the school’s KidWind program, in which students design and test wind turbines. Allen teams have earned national recognition through the competition.

As Hatfield prepares to begin her term, she acknowledged the strain between the district and some community members following the defeat of a proposed school bond that would have funded a new middle school and other facility improvements.

“The bond was overwhelmingly defeated, and that tells us something,” she said. “We have work to do moving forward.”

Hatfield said a major early focus will be reassessing district priorities and determining how to move ahead without immediately pursuing another bond issue. She cited ongoing needs related to school safety, aging elementary facilities, and operational challenges such as shared gym and cafeteria spaces.

Early childhood education is another area she hopes to emphasize, particularly kindergarten readiness. Hatfield said her husband works as a paraprofessional at Allen, giving her firsthand insight into classroom needs and the growing demand for para support across the district.

“When kids come into kindergarten at very different readiness levels, it’s challenging for everyone — teachers and students alike,” she said.

Hatfield described the board position as a significant time commitment with no financial compensation, but said she views the role as an investment in the community’s future.

“The payoff is making the district better for our kids,” she said. “I plan to live here the rest of my life.”

During her first year, Hatfield said she intends to focus on learning the district’s operations, completing the current strategic plan adopted in 2024, supporting curriculum improvements, and encouraging greater parent involvement.

She also highlighted mental health, social-emotional learning, and community service as priorities, saying students benefit when they feel supported, engaged, and connected beyond the classroom.

“It takes the whole community,” Hatfield said. “Public education works best when parents, schools and the community are all invested together.”

The USD 308 Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at the district administration building. Hatfield’s first official meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 12.

PARKVILLE, Mo. — Park University is hosting “Reduce / Reuse / Redesign,” an exhibit of furniture created by interior design students that demonstrates creativity, craftsmanship and thoughtful reuse of materials. The exhibit is on display through Friday, Feb. 13, in the Campanella Gallery located inside Norrington Center on the University’s flagship Parkville Campus. Admission to the Gallery is free and open to the public.

According to Andrea Lee, Ph.D., director of the Campanella Gallery and associate professor of art, the students had three options in creating their furniture using objects and materials that were primarily found or reused, with minimal purchase from a hardware store.

Hutch High grad, others exhibit furniture projects at Park University

Buhler USD 313 Superintendent Cindy Couchman said the event, titled All Hands on Deck, was a collaborative effort involving representatives from every school district in the county.

The day featured a keynote from national education speaker Kim Bearden of the Ron Clark Academy, who addressed how educators—and leaders at every level—can better navigate emotional or difficult conversations.

Couchman said Bearden emphasized four key principles: giving people full attention, listening for underlying motivation, expressing appreciation, and validating emotions so everyone leaves the conversation with dignity intact.

She said the message applies far beyond the classroom, whether dealing with parents, colleagues, students, or even family members.

In addition to professional development, Couchman reflected on a fast-moving grass fire near Plum Creek just before winter break that led to a precautionary evacuation of the school.

While the building itself was never directly threatened, rapidly changing conditions and road closures raised concerns that parents may not be able to reach their children.

District leaders quickly placed bus drivers on standby, and when additional roads began closing, the decision was made to evacuate. Within an hour, nearly 475 students and staff were safely transported to a nearby church and reunited with families.

Couchman praised school staff, bus drivers, emergency responders, and local churches for their coordination and calm response, noting that the incident provided valuable lessons in emergency preparedness.

As students return from winter break, Couchman said routines are being reestablished, athletics are resuming, and the district remains focused on safety—especially with winter weather ahead.

She said while weather-related decisions can be difficult, the district will always err on the side of caution to keep students safe.

The Farm Service Agency is offering youth loans to help young people establish and operate agricultural income-producing projects through 4-H, FFA, and other approved agricultural organizations.

The program is designed to give youth hands-on experience in planning, managing, and operating a small agricultural business while developing financial and leadership skills. Projects must be conducted under the guidance of an organization advisor and structured to generate enough income to repay the loan.

Youth loans may be used for a variety of modest agricultural projects, including livestock, crop production, equipment, or other approved enterprises tied to a supervised program of work. The maximum loan amount available through the program is $10,000.

To qualify, applicants must be between 10 and 20 years of age and either be a U.S. citizen or a legal resident alien. Applicants must also meet general FSA eligibility requirements and demonstrate the ability to manage the project with guidance from an approved project advisor. A project supervisor is required to recommend the youth loan applicant and provide ongoing supervision throughout the project.

Local assistance is available through the Reno County USDA Service Center, which can help families and advisors prepare and submit application forms.

USDA FSA offers youth loans for 4-H and FFA agricultural projects

Educators from across Reno County will come together next week for “All Hands on Deck,” a large-scale professional development event designed to foster collaboration, shared learning, and innovation across school systems.

The one-day event is scheduled for Jan. 5 on the Hutchinson Community College campus and will bring together teachers and administrators from every public school district in Reno County, along with Central Christian School and higher education partners at HutchCC.

Paul Erickson, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for grades 6–12 at Buhler USD 313 and one of the event’s lead organizers, said the gathering represents years of planning and coordination among local school leaders.

“This has really been an idea for probably 10 years,” Erickson said. “Coordinating calendars and committing a professional learning day across that many districts is a significant challenge. It took a lot of teamwork from superintendents and school boards to make it happen.”

Because of the scope and planning required, the event is held every other year. The upcoming session marks the return of “All Hands on Deck” following its initial launch in 2024, which received strong feedback from participating educators.

The day will feature a keynote address from Kim Bearden, co-founder of the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, along with dozens of breakout sessions and networking opportunities. Erickson said pooling resources across districts makes it possible to bring in nationally recognized speakers while also offering a wide range of locally driven sessions.

“Educators are collaborative by nature,” he said. “They want to learn from one another. Bringing everyone together allows us to tap into that collective expertise and create a learning experience that would be out of reach if districts worked in isolation.”

In addition to the keynote, the majority of breakout sessions will be led by local educators, highlighting successful classroom practices and district-level initiatives from across the county. Erickson estimates roughly 80 percent of presentations are facilitated by teachers and staff from participating schools.

“We have tremendous expertise right here in Reno County,” Erickson said. “This gives our educators the chance to showcase what they do every day and learn directly from their peers.”

Bearden will remain on campus throughout the day, delivering multiple sessions to smaller groups of teachers in addition to her keynote presentation. Erickson said her hands-on approach and classroom-focused background make her a strong fit for the event.

“She’s a teacher by nature,” he said. “Not only can she deliver a powerful keynote, but she’ll also be teaching alongside us all day. We’re really fortunate to have her.”

For organizers, success will be measured not just by attendance, but by how educators feel at the end of the day.

“When teachers from all subject areas — including electives, career and technical education, the arts, and coaching — say the day was meaningful for them, that’s the marker of success,” Erickson said. “If they leave saying, ‘I can’t wait to do this again,’ then we’ve done our job.”

Bringing everyone together allows us to tap into that collective expertise and create a learning experience that would be out of reach if districts worked in isolation.”In addition to the keynote, the majority of breakout sessions will be led by local educators, highlighting successful classroom practices and district-level initiatives from across the county. Erickson estimates roughly 80 percent of presentations are facilitated by teachers and staff from participating schools.“We have tremendous expertise right here in Reno County,” Erickson said. “This gives our educators the chance to showcase what they do every day and learn directly from their peers.”Bearden will remain on campus throughout the day, delivering multiple sessions to smaller groups of teachers in addition to her keynote presentation. Erickson said her hands-on approach and classroom-focused background make her a strong fit for the event.“She’s a teacher by nature,” he said. “Not only can she deliver a powerful keynote, but she’ll also be teaching alongside us all day. We’re really fortunate to have her.”For organizers, success will be measured not just by attendance, but by how educators feel at the end of the day.“When teachers from all subject areas — including electives, career and technical education, the arts, and coaching — say the day was meaningful for them, that’s the marker of success,” Erickson said. “If they leave saying, ‘I can’t wait to do this again,’ then we’ve done our job.”

Naccarato concludes his career as a Business and Leadership Instructor at Hutchinson Community College, leaving behind a legacy defined by enthusiasm, mentorship, and a deep commitment to student success.

Before joining HutchCC, Naccarato spent years coaching and mentoring student-athletes in the Hutchinson area, experiences that shaped his approach in the classroom. That background aligned seamlessly in 2004, when the college launched its Entrepreneurship Program and Naccarato stepped into a role that blended education, leadership, and real-world business insight.

Over more than two decades, Naccarato became known for courses that consistently filled to capacity, driven by his engaging teaching style, infectious energy, and personal investment in students. Colleagues and students alike often described him as more than an instructor — he was a motivator who built relationships and fostered confidence.

Beyond the classroom, Naccarato helped connect students with the broader business community through his semi-annual Management &amp; Entrepreneur’s Forum. The event brought together local business leaders alongside Fortune 500 executives, giving students direct exposure to professional perspectives and encouraging them to think ambitiously about their futures.

His impact was recognized multiple times through honors as a Blue Dragon Educator of the Year, reflecting both his instructional excellence and his lasting influence on campus culture.

As HutchCC closes another year in Blue Dragon history, college leaders and students are celebrating Naccarato’s contributions and wishing him well in retirement.

“Thank you, Dan, for 22 years of leadership, enthusiasm, and unwavering belief in your students,” the college said in a statement. “Congratulations on your well-earned retirement and thank you for making every day a great day to study business at HutchCC.”

 Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy (HCTEA) hosted the SkillsUSA District Tournament on Thursday, November 20, welcoming students from Pratt and Ellinwood high schools. The event featured Leadership competitions including Job Interview, Job Demonstration A, and Job Demonstration Open.

SkillsUSA is a national organization that provides students in technical and career training programs, from middle school through postsecondary education, opportunities to develop leadership skills, compete in industry-related events, and connect with local employers.

HCTEA students dominated the district, qualifying nine out of ten positions for the State SkillsUSA Conference, which will be held March 2–3, 2026. Contestants represented HCTEA’s Welding, Auto Body and Collision, Auto Mechanics, and Machining programs. Judges represented the professional community from around Reno County.

 HCTEA shines at SkillsUSA District Tournament, qualifies nine students for state competition

Agricultural education at Buhler High School has grown into one of the school’s largest and most diverse career and technical programs, serving students from a wide range of backgrounds and interests.

John Clark, one of four agriculture teachers and an FFA advisor at Buhler High School, recently discussed the scope and impact of the program during an appearance on the BW Morning Show. Clark is in his 34th year of teaching agriculture in the district, having joined the program in the fall of 1992.

Clark said the appeal of the job has never faded.

“I get to work with kids, and I get to work with agriculture,” Clark said. “Those are two of the best things I could imagine turning into a career.”

The agriculture program has expanded significantly since Clark began teaching. What was once a department with a single instructor has grown to four teachers offering multiple career pathways. Those pathways include animal systems, plant systems, and power, structural, and technical systems, commonly known as agricultural mechanics.

Clark currently teaches advanced animal science, advanced plant science with an emphasis on agronomy and crop production, food science, agricultural business management, and advanced agricultural mechanics. Other offerings include introductory agriculture science, horticulture, floral design, greenhouse management, and agricultural fabrication, where students design and build metal projects.

Agriculture education at Buhler has evolved far beyond traditional production farming. Clark noted that while some students pursue agricultural careers, many enroll to develop leadership, communication, and career-readiness skills.

“Agriculture today includes animals, plants, mechanics, food science, business, communications, and technology,” Clark said. “If it deals with food or fiber, it fits somewhere under the agriculture umbrella.”

FFA plays a central role in that development. Through the organization, students participate in competitions, community service, fundraising, and leadership events at the local, district, state, and national levels. Clark estimates the program offers nearly 150 different activities, allowing students to choose opportunities that align with their interests.

Enrollment numbers reflect the program’s reach. Buhler High School has approximately 650 to 700 students, with about 200 enrolled in agriculture classes this year. Clark said that over half of graduating seniors typically take at least one agriculture class during their high school career.

The program’s growth traces back to the late 1980s, when non-traditional courses such as veterinary science and horticulture were added. Enrollment quickly increased, reversing what had been a decline in participation.

Career pathways supported by the program extend well beyond farming. Students pursue careers in welding, mechanics, veterinary services, wildlife conservation, golf course management, landscaping, irrigation, food science, agribusiness, and emerging technologies such as drone applications in agriculture. Some graduates enter the workforce directly, while others continue on to community colleges, technical programs, or four-year universities.

Clark emphasized that his goal goes beyond graduation.

“If my job is just to get a kid to the graduation stage, I’m failing them and their families,” he said. “My job is to help them become productive citizens, lifelong learners, and contributors to their community.”

Clark said the continued success of the program reflects both student interest and community support, making agricultural education a cornerstone of career and technical learning at Buhler High School.

Buhler Ag and FFA program prepares students for diverse careers

Sterling High School Theatre has entered an exciting new chapter with the official chartering of Thespian Troupe #12627, bringing the school into the International Thespian Society and opening new opportunities for students in the performing arts.

The new troupe is led by Greg McGlynn, a Sterling High School alumnus who returned home after more than 30 years of teaching theatre across Kansas and Texas. McGlynn said his decision to come back was rooted in both family and a desire to give back.

“I am excited to come back home and share my 30-plus years of theatre experiences with my alma mater,” McGlynn said. “I thought I was ready to slow down and return to driving a tractor in the fields of Rice County. But when my own kids started high school and there was a transition in the theatre department, I realized I wanted them to experience the same kind of exciting, fun memories on stage that I’ve given countless other students.”

One of McGlynn’s first goals was to establish a Thespian troupe at Sterling—something the school had never done before, despite its long history in theatre. “My old theatre teacher, Betsy Dutton, was here for over 40 years, but she also coached debate and forensics and taught senior English,” he said. “I’m the part-time theatre teacher, so I thought, ‘I should do this.’ Starting a Thespian troupe would enrich the students’ experience—not just performing, but serving the community and sharing meaningful stories.”

That vision became reality on December 10, when 13 students were inducted during Sterling High School’s inaugural Thespian ceremony.

The International Thespian Society is an honor organization that recognizes student achievement in theatre arts through a point system based on performance, technical work, leadership, and service. Membership opens the door to events such as the Kansas Thespian Festival, held annually at Century II in Wichita.

This year’s festival will take place January 8–10, 2026, and eight of Sterling’s 13 Thespians plan to attend. The three-day event brings together more than 1,800 high school theatre students for performances, workshops, college auditions, and professional development.

“I am most pumped to go to the Kansas Thespian Festival,” said Trace DeShon, the troupe’s secretary. “From what I’ve heard, the energy and enthusiasm of that many theatre students is incredible. I can’t wait.”

Sophomore James McGlynn is also looking forward to the experience. “I’m excited to go as a real Thespian,” he said. “I’ve gone for years to support my dad as a director, helping build sets and watching workshops. Now I get to experience all of that as a student.”

While the opportunity is exciting, it also comes with financial challenges. Each student must pay a $150 registration fee, and the total cost for registration, hotel, and food for the eight attending students exceeds $3,000. To help offset expenses, the troupe has been actively fundraising through events such as a Haunted Theatre on Halloween and a Children’s Theatre Workshop for elementary students earlier this fall. Those efforts have covered much of the cost, but additional support is still needed.

Community members who wish to help support Sterling High School’s new Thespian troupe and its trip to the state festival may write a check to Sterling High School, noting “Thespians” on the memo line.

McGlynn brings extensive festival experience to the program, having had seven productions selected for performance at the Kansas Thespian Festival and two advance to the International Thespian Festival. He has already set a goal for the Sterling program. “I want to see a Sterling High School production perform at the Kansas Thespian Festival within the next few years,” he said.

Sterling High Theatre currently produces a three-show season in the Betsy Dutton Auditorium, along with student-led projects and community outreach. With the formation of Thespian Troupe #12627, the program is building a strong foundation for student leadership, artistic excellence, and service—ensuring that the curtain is just rising on a new era for theatre at Sterling High School.

“The goal of Sterling High Theatre is to create high-quality, professional-level theatre that’s accessible to the entire community,” McGlynn said. “Our mission is to share the enriching experience of live theatre—to expose, educate, entertain, and excite.”

The REVEAL yearbook was recognized in four of the five critique categories, earning All Kansas marks in Coverage, Reporting, Photography, and Design. KSPA judges praised the book for going “above and beyond the typical,” noting that the staff set the tone of the school year for readers through a unique and appealing approach in all judged areas.

Leading the 2025 yearbook were Editors-in-Chief Ava Madden and Alexis Springer, both 2025 graduates of Trinity Catholic. Trinity Catholic High School yearbook earns KSPA’s highest “All Kansas” honor

Three Trinity Catholic Junior Senior High School seniors are encouraging fellow Reno County students to consider Kansas Boys State, calling the weeklong leadership and government immersion program one of the most impactful experiences of their high-school careers.

John and Jacob Lindstrom and Sam Vogel visited the studio this week to discuss their experience at the 2025 session of Kansas Boys State, a program of the American Legion that brings together hundreds of incoming juniors and seniors from across Kansas for a hands-on simulation of state and local government.

The students described the program as both intense and energizing. Over the course of a week, attendees are assigned to fictional cities and counties, campaign for leadership roles, debate policy, pass budgets, run departments, and operate a full mock government—complete with legislatures, courts, and administrative agencies.

“It’s a government simulation, but it’s also so much more,” said John Lindstrom. “You’re split into towns and counties, you elect leaders, and then you start running a government. You’re creating ordinances, debating ideas, fixing problems, and watching how your decisions impact the simulation. It was incredibly detailed.”

For many, the scale of the experience was the biggest surprise. The students said they arrived expecting a small camp, only to find more than 200 participants representing communities from across Kansas.

“There was a huge, diverse group of kids,” said Vogel. “You’re working with people you’ve never met, from every corner of the state. That alone pushed me out of my comfort zone in a big way.”

Days at Boys State were highly structured, beginning with morning assemblies and flag-raising before launching into a full schedule of meetings, legislative sessions, simulation activities, and collaborative work. Participants also competed in county athletic challenges and took part in evening events.

John Lindstrom served as a city commissioner, managing a fictional city with his peers. “We were up early, and every morning immediately impacted the simulation—writing ordinances, debating issues, and making real decisions,” he said. “You learn very quickly how important teamwork and communication are.”

All three students said the leadership lessons have stuck with them well into their senior year. They’ve applied the communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills gained at Boys State in classes, group projects, and even college applications.

“It taught me how to effectively express ideas, persuade people, and stand out,” Jacob said. “Seeing other students who were really good at it helped me learn from them.”

Boys State’s realistic election process—including party caucuses, speeches, and debates—was especially eye-opening.

“It does model that election process.” Jacob Lindstrom said. “If you’re interested in politics, this is the place to go. Even if you’re not, it teaches leadership in a way that’s hard to get anywhere else.”

While none of the students declared a firm path toward public office, each said the experience broadened their perspective on both government and leadership.

“It made me realize leadership isn’t just one person out front,” John Lindstrom said. “It’s a collaborative effort. You have roles, responsibilities, and people relying on you. That changed how I see leadership going forward.”

Jacob Lindstrom added that the program gave him a deeper appreciation for how complex Kansas government truly is. “There are so many departments and moving parts. Every decision affects someone.”

Despite the political setting, all three stressed that Boys State is not only for those pursuing government careers.

“You don’t have to want to be a politician to benefit,” Vogel said. “It’s one of the best leadership camps you can attend.”

However, the ALBSK program will again expand the pool of applicants for this year’s session to also include those who will complete their sophomore year of high school this spring.

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

The cost to attend the Boys State of Kansas program is $375; however, in many instances, sponsors pay the majority of the fees, with the delegate or his family paying $50. Those wishing to attend the 2026 session should visit ksbstate.org to apply. Registration open for 2026 American Legion Boys State

The Hutchinson Career and Technical Education Academy received a major investment in its Automotive Technology program this week, thanks to a $16,000 donation from the Eck Auto Group in partnership with NAPA. The gift strengthens a long-standing relationship between the dealership group and the CTE program, which serves high school students and adult learners across the region.

During the presentation, CTE Director Travis Riebel welcomed students, USD 308 leadership, and representatives from Hutchinson Community College—highlighting the importance of industry partnerships in preparing the next generation of skilled automotive technicians. He noted that Kansas Department of Labor data shows more than six-percent projected growth in automotive service positions across south-central Kansas over the next decade.

“The demand is there, and our students are stepping up to meet it,” Riebel said. “But we can’t provide high-quality training without strong partners like the Eck Auto Group.”

The donation follows last year’s gift of a Ford Expedition, which students currently use to train on modern vehicle systems. This week’s contribution from the dealership group also included motors, instrument clusters, door panels, and other parts for hands-on instruction—resources instructors say are vital for keeping the program aligned with industry standards.

Kyle Eck, speaking on behalf of the Eck Auto Group, praised the students for choosing a career path that keeps the automotive industry moving.

“Technicians are the backbone of every dealership,” Eck said. “You’re the ones who keep cars running and customers coming back. We want to support programs like this because they produce the kind of skilled people our dealerships depend on.”

Instructors Jacob Dreiling and Kevin Berrey also thanked the dealership’s technicians who routinely visit the academy to mentor students, assist with projects, and provide real-world insight into the shop environment.

The Hutchinson CTE Academy’s automotive program operates as a joint partnership between Hutchinson Public Schools and Hutchinson Community College. Students can enroll beginning their junior year and have the opportunity to earn certificates or an Associate of Applied Science degree.

Riebel said the donation ensures students continue training with the tools and technology found in today’s workplaces—giving them a competitive edge as they enter the automotive field.

Eck Auto Group makes $16K donation to Hutchinson CTEA

In the wake of the failed USD 308 bond proposal earlier this month, district leadership is taking a step back, asking pointed questions, and preparing to engage more directly with voters before deciding what comes next. Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson and Communications Director Stacy Goss joined KWBW Radio this week for a wide-ranging conversation about the bond results, community concerns, fall activities, and the approaching winter season.

Johnson said the Board of Education plans to begin a series of listening sessions — informal and formal — to understand both the reasons behind the “no” vote and what residents would support moving forward.

One challenge, Johnson said, is that the district’s original survey — the backbone for much of the bond planning — was conducted two years ago. That data may simply no longer reflect the economic and political environment of 2025.

The consultant who managed the survey told district officials at a recent school board conference that survey results are typically reliable for only about six months.

“Truthfully, the public told us back then what they thought,” Johnson said. “But the environment has changed. Costs have gone up. People are squeezed. Taxes are top of mind.”

Johnson said the most common message she heard from bond opponents centered on property taxes. “Whether it’s one mill or five mills, it feels the same to many families right now,” he said. “People are stretched thin.”

Johnson acknowledged that concerns from voters about older buildings, athletic field relocation, and the fate of non-renovated campuses were legitimate. Those issues were discussed at length during the three-year bond committee process, she said — but some of the people raising those concerns now were not involved earlier.

“A board member told me, ‘If I could go back and do anything differently, I would have invited more of those folks to serve on the committee,’” Johnson said. “A lot of the alternatives being suggested today are things we actually talked about. If they had been at the table from the beginning, maybe the outcome would have been different.”

Despite the bond’s defeat, the need hasn’t disappeared. The district is now essentially at “square one,” revisiting both the proposal and community sentiment.

Following the election, Reno County released updated mill levy figures for surrounding districts. Johnson noted that USD 308 sits at 52 mills, well below several neighboring districts operating at or above 60 mills.

The failed proposal would have increased Hutchinson to 57 mills, still under nearby school districts.

“It was a comprehensive package that addressed older buildings and future needs,” Johnson said. “This was about elevating Hutchinson. Strong schools attract families. They attract businesses. They’re foundational for growth.”

Goss highlighted the many positive student achievements happening across the district, including signing day at Hutchinson High School, where multiple athletes committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at community colleges and four-year universities.

“It’s exciting for the students, but also a big moment for families,” Goss said. “They decorate tables, bring college gear — it’s a fun, meaningful celebration of what’s next for these kids.”

She also reminded families of the district’s digital event calendar at <a href="http://usd308.com">usd308.com</a>, where parents and grandparents can add concerts, fundraisers, games, and school events directly to their personal devices.

One of the biggest upcoming events is the districtwide orchestra, band, and choir concert on Dec. 15 at the Hutchinson High School Performing Arts Center. Thousands of students and families typically rotate through the PAC during the multi-hour performance.

Fall theater wrapped earlier this month with another strong turnout. “Drama is a huge part of what we offer,” Johnson said. “You can draw large casts and get many students involved. It’s a major part of the fall season.”

With fall sports concluding, basketball season now sits right around the corner. Hutchinson High School will host an early-season tournament December 5–6, with several visiting schools participating.

As winter approaches, Johnson emphasized the importance of families ensuring their phone numbers and contact information are correct in the district’s system.

“Snow rarely hits during the day. It always seems to arrive overnight,” Johnson said. “We’d love to make the call the night before, and that’s our goal whenever possible. But often we’re up at 4 a.m. checking roads and conditions.”

 </figure><h2></h2>MARC JACOBS Hutch PostIn the wake of the failed USD 308 bond proposal earlier this month, district leadership is taking a step back, asking pointed questions, and preparing to engage more directly with voters before deciding what comes next. Superintendent Dr. Dawn Johnson and Communications Director Stacy Goss joined KWBW Radio this week for a wide-ranging conversation about the bond results, community concerns, fall activities, and the approaching winter season.Johnson said the Board of Education plans to begin a series of listening sessions — informal and formal — to understand both the reasons behind the “no” vote and what residents would support moving forward.One challenge, Johnson said, is that the district’s original survey — the backbone for much of the bond planning — was conducted two years ago. That data may simply no longer reflect the economic and political environment of 2025.The consultant who managed the survey told district officials at a recent school board conference that survey results are typically reliable for only about six months.<figure>

Costs have gone up. People are squeezed. Taxes are top of mind.”Johnson said the most common message she heard from bond opponents centered on property taxes. “Whether it’s one mill or five mills, it feels the same to many families right now,” he said. “People are stretched thin.”Johnson acknowledged that concerns from voters about older buildings, athletic field relocation, and the fate of non-renovated campuses were legitimate. Those issues were discussed at length during the three-year bond committee process, she said — but some of the people raising those concerns now were not involved earlier.“A board member told me, ‘If I could go back and do anything differently, I would have invited more of those folks to serve on the committee,’” Johnson said. “A lot of the alternatives being suggested today are things we actually talked about. If they had been at the table from the beginning, maybe the outcome would have been different.”Despite the bond’s defeat, the need hasn’t disappeared. The district is now essentially at “square one,” revisiting both the proposal and community sentiment.Following the election, Reno County released updated mill levy figures for surrounding districts. Johnson noted that USD 308 sits at 52 mills, well below several neighboring districts operating at or above 60 mills.The failed proposal would have increased Hutchinson to 57 mills, still under nearby school districts.“It was a comprehensive package that addressed older buildings and future needs,” Johnson said. “This was about elevating Hutchinson. Strong schools attract families. They attract businesses. They’re foundational for growth.”Goss highlighted the many positive student achievements happening across the district, including signing day at Hutchinson High School, where multiple athletes committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at community colleges and four-year universities.“It’s exciting for the students, but also a big moment for families,” Goss said. “They decorate tables, bring college gear — it’s a fun, meaningful celebration of what’s next for these kids.”She also reminded families of the district’s digital event calendar at <a href="http://usd308.com">usd308.com</a>, where parents and grandparents can add concerts, fundraisers, games, and school events directly to their personal devices.One of the biggest upcoming events is the districtwide orchestra, band, and choir concert on Dec. 15 at the Hutchinson High School Performing Arts Center. Thousands of students and families typically rotate through the PAC during the multi-hour performance.Fall theater wrapped earlier this month with another strong turnout. “Drama is a huge part of what we offer,” Johnson said. “You can draw large casts and get many students involved. It’s a major part of the fall season.”With fall sports concluding, basketball season now sits right around the corner. HUTCHINSON — The University of Kansas Transition to Postsecondary Education (KU TPE) program will host an information session in partnership with the Reno County Education Cooperative (RCEC) on Tuesday, Nov. 11, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Reno County Special Education Cooperative, 2500 E. 30th Ave.

The KU TPE program is a two-year undergraduate certificate designed for KU students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program provides an inclusive college experience that allows participants to take KU courses for credit, join student clubs and organizations, live in student housing, and participate in both paid and unpaid career internships. Upon completion, students earn a KU undergraduate certificate on their transcript.
