TOPEKA – Changes to postseason formats and championship sites for basketball, football, wrestling and track and field highlight actions approved at the June 12-13 KSHSAA Executive Board Meeting. The postseason formats are set by the KSHSAA Executive Board each year.

Basketball -&nbsp;Beginning in March of 2026, the state basketball tournaments will be moving to four total sites. Four facilities will play host to the seven classifications, 14 championships. By honoring the KSHSAA membership voted in the fall of 2023 to qualify eight boys teams and eight girls teams involved at the final site, modifications to the daily schedule will be developed. The schedule and other event details, including classification designations for each site and venue selection will be determined and announced following the 2024-25 basketball season.

Another basketball postseason change effective with the 2024-25 season will come at the 3A, 2A, 1A DI and 1A DII classifications. Each class will be divided into four regions and then seeded into two sub-states within the region: Substate A: 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16; Substate B: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15. The winner of each substate will advance to the state basketball tournament. Further format details and dates will be sent to member schools.

Football&nbsp;- As announced in January, the state football championships will be moving to three sites with three games being played at each site. The executive board approved the following sites and schedule for 2024:

Emporia State University: Class 6A = Friday, November 29 at 2:00pm Class 4A = Saturday, November 30 at 1:00pm Class 5A = Saturday, November 30 at 7:00pm

Hutchinson Community College: Class 2A = Friday, November 29 at 6:00pm Class 3A = Saturday, November 30 at 12:00pm Class 1A = Saturday, November 30 at 5:00pm

Kiowa County High School, Greensburg: Class 8-player DII = Saturday, November 30 at 11:00am Class 6-Player = Saturday, November 30 at 3:00pm Class 8-Player DI = Saturday, November 30 at 7:00pm

Wrestling&nbsp;– Girl’s wrestling will now include four classes to mirror the boy’s classification designations. The addition of another class for girl’s wrestling necessitates the addition of another championship site. 6A, 5A, 4A and 3-1A will each have their own site to determine a champion. 3-1A state wrestling will be in Hays and 4A will be in Salina. Park City Arena and one other facility to be named later will house either 6A or 5A. State sites and regional dates will be determined at the September KSHSAA Executive Board meeting. The state wrestling tournament will take place February 28 - March 1, 2025.

Track and Field&nbsp;– Qualification for the state meet was adjusted to now be the top 3 plus the next four best regional performance in each event.

Two committees will be formed to gather input from membership school leaders. One to discuss the details behind the implementation of Esports prior to the possible adoption as a KSHSAA sanctioned activity. The second committee will review the KSHSAA calendar to consider possible alternatives to dates of postseason activities.

KSHSAA Executive Board approves several postseason changes

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Maikel Garcia hit a game-ending two run double off Yankees closer Clay Holmes, and the Kansas City Royals recovered after squandering a brilliant start by Alec Marsh to beat New York 4-3 on Thursday and avoid a four-game sweep.

Marsh took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning against the major league-best Yankees (49-22), who had outscored the Royals 25-8 in the first three games of the series. He allowed Juan Soto's leadoff single in that frame and then retired the next three batters to conclude his 96-pitch outing.

New York immediately went to work in the eighth against reliever John Schreiber. Anthony Rizzo homered to get the Yankees within 2-1. An error by second baseman Garrett Hampson set up Anthony Volpe's RBI grounder. Angel Zerpa came in and gave up Soto's go-ahead RBI single.

With one out in the ninth against Holmes (1-2), Drew Waters hit a grounder that went for an infield hit after Holmes and first baseman Rizzo were confused about who would field the ball. After a fielder's-grounder, Kyle Isbel singled to bring up Garcia, who hit a liner down the left-field line to score MJ Melendez from third and Isbel from first.

It was the fourth blown save in 23 chances for Holmes.

James McArthur (3-3) worked a scoreless ninth for Kansas City, which snapped a four-game skid. The Royals finished 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Nestor Cortes gave up two runs in seven innings for New York to lower his road ERA to 5.57 from 6.17. The left-hander's ERA at Yankee Stadium is 1.77.

Bobby Witt Jr. extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games with a fourth-inning single and came in to score on Vinnie Pasquantino's two-run double off the wall in left-center. That gave the Royals their first lead in the series.

The Royals threatened again in the sixth. Witt led off with a single, but was caught stealing on a pickoff throw by Cortes. Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro was ejected after arguing that a balk should have been called.

The Royals recalled LHP Anthony Veneziano from Triple-A Omaha and optioned LHP Daniel Lynch to Omaha.

The Yankees travel to Boston Friday to begin a three-game series against the Red Sox. RHP Luis Gil (8-1, 2.04 ERA) will face RHP Brayan Bello (6-3, 4.78 ERA).

The Royals head to Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Dodgers. LHP Cole Ragans (4-4, 3.08 ERA) will get the start for Kansas City against RHP Gavin Stone (7-2, 2.93 ERA).

⚾ Garcia's game-ending hit gives Royals win over Yankees

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After organizers for Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog-eating contest said Joey Chestnut wouldn’t compete this year because of a deal with a rival brand, Netflix swiftly announced a new hot dog-eating competition that will feature Chestnut and his “fiercest rival.”

Chestnut, a 16-time hot dog-eating champion, will face off with his frequent Nathan’s competitor, Takeru Kobayashi, in a live Netflix special on Sept. 2, the streamer announced Wednesday.

The contest, titled “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef,” will feature the two chowing down on all-beef hot dogs, likely in a nod to reports that Chestnut’s rival brand deal is with Impossible Foods, which makes plant-based hot dogs.

Major League Eating, the organization that oversees the Nathan’s contest, announced Tuesday that Chestnut’s deal was an “exclusivity” issue, saying that it was his decision to step back from the competition he has participated in since 2005. “We love him. The fans love him,” said George Shea, a Major League Eating event organizer, adding: “He made the choice.”

Chestnut disputed that he made the choice, saying on the social platform X that Nathan’s and Major League Eating made the decision, adding that it would “deprive fans of the holiday’s usual joy and entertainment.”

He also wrote that fans could “rest assured” that they would see him east again soon, adding: “STAY HUNGRY!”

Impossible Foods has not confirmed a formal relationship with Chestnut, but he said in a statement on Tuesday they support his choice to compete in any competition, adding “Meat eaters shouldn’t have to be exclusive to just one wiener.”

Following Netflix’s announcement, Shea said the streamer was “trying to recreate the Nathan’s contest to some extent and you just can’t do that.”

“Imitation is the best form of flattery,” he added.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams joined the conversation via X on Wednesday, urging Nathan's and Major League Eating to “stop being such weenies.” “It would be ‘impossible’ to have this year's Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest without Joey Chestnut,” he wrote. “Let's find a way to squash this beef and bring back the champ for another 4th of July at Coney Island!”

In a Netflix news release announcing the competition, Chestnut said he was eager bring the competition to the streaming service.

“Through all of my years in competitive eating, Kobayashi stands out as my fiercest rival,” Chestnut said via the release. “Competing against him pushed me to be so much better. I know that fans have waited a long time for another chapter of our rivalry and I can’t wait for our massive showdown live on Netflix! It’s time to give the people what they want!”

Kobayashi, who has been rumored to be retired, said in the Netflix release that he is looking forward to facing off with Chestnut once more. The two have not competed since 2009.

“Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time,” Kobayashi said. “This rivalry has been brewing for a long time. Competing against Joey live on Netflix means fans all over the world can watch me knock him out.”

The Prairie Village, Kan., native comes back to his home state after spending a season at Arizona State (2023-24), two seasons at San Francisco (2021-23) and two seasons at Nevada (2019-21)."Zane is known for his ability to shoot," Mills said.&nbsp;"However, the area of his game that stood out to our staff was his ability to defensive rebound. He has been able to provide a significant presence, during every stop of his career, as a very good defensive rebounder. He also provides a shooting dimension to our team, from the frontcourt, that will allow us to utilize his skill set through a variety of offensive schemes. I'm glad this Kansas native has chosen to play his final year with the Shockers.

"Meeks was limited to just five games in a Sun Devil uniform due to an ankle injury that sidelined him for the season. In those five games, he averaged 3.6 points and was 6-for-13 from beyond the arc. During his collegiate career, the 6-foot-9 forward has knocked down 132 career three-pointers. He's a career 34 percent shoot from long range in more than 100 collegiate games. In 2022-23, he enjoyed the best season of his career at San Francisco. He averaged career highs in points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game and field goal percentage. In 29 contests for USF, he made 15 starts, averaging 10.3 points per game for the season. His first season at USF saw him post 5.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 27 games, all off the bench.

As a true freshman at Nevada, Meeks&nbsp;appeared in 31 games, averaging 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds, while shooting 36.4 percent (40-for-110) from beyond the arc. His numbers jumped to 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds as a sophomore for the Wolf Pack, but was limited to 18 games due to an injury that cut his season short.

He began his prep career at Shawnee Mission East High School before playing his final season at Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Meeks helped Brewster to the 2019 National Prep Championship, behind a 34-7 record.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Renfroe’s left big toe is not fractured, the Kansas City Royals said two days after the team initially announced it was broken by a foul ball. Kansas City said Renfroe is expected to miss two-to-three weeks, down from six-to-eight weeks. Renfroe was hurt Monday when he fouled off a pair of pitches off left-hander Carlos Rodón in the third inning. The outfielder got off to a slow start this season but had raised his batting average to .200 with six homers and 26 RBIs.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nolan Arenado and Iván Herrera each had three hits, Sonny Gray pitched seven strong innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2. Arenado scored a run and drove in one while Herrera also scored a run. Brendan Donovan added two hits and an RBI. (AP) — The College World Series opens Friday at Charles Schwab Field and, for the first time since the event expanded to eight teams in 1950, only two conferences will be represented on the college game’s biggest stage. The Los Angeles Clippers say West died Wednesday morning with his wife, Karen, by his side. He was 86. West was nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his late-game exploits as a player, and he won both NBA and Olympic titles. He was an All-Star in all 14 of his NBA seasons and won the 1972 championship with the Lakers. West was later the general manger of eight Lakers championship teams.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Florida captain Aleksander Barkov practiced again after being knocked out of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final in the third period after Edmonton forward Leon Draisaitl launched toward him and hit him in the head. Head coach Paul Maurice said the team will make a final decision about Barkov’s Game 3 status on Thursday, but the star “felt better” Wednesday. That much hasn't changed. They've been called turtlebacks and upside-down cereal bowls. But they are a problem. And that's probably why a total of four players have broken par for the U.S. Open the previous three times at Pinehurst. Viktor Hovland is among those who say Pinehurst will be a supreme test.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - It took nearly three and a half hours in a defensive battle, but the Hutchinson Monarchs found a way to get it done. Blake Bradford came up with a single to center to score Drew Bugner for a 12-winning 4-3 walk-off victory over Newton at Hobart-Detter Field late Wednesday night.

The Monarch pitchers were outstanding with&nbsp;Brock Rod (10), Reed Scott (4), Derrick Johnson (1), Carson Cornelius (4) and Kamden Edge (2) have combined for 21 strikeouts to set a new Monarch single-game strikeout record.

&nbsp;Newton made it dramatic by scoring 2 runs in the top of the ninth then had two on base with a pair of walks bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate for the Rebels, but Reed Scott gets a pair of strikeouts to close the inning.

Lost in the excitement of a walk-off win was the fact that D.J. Merriweather launched a two-run home run to center field to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead heading to the 8th after the game was tied 1-1.

Same two teams match up tonight in Newton with the first pitch set for 7pm at Centennial Park.

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge came out on top 10-5 over the Midland RockHounds at Riverfront Stadium. The win snaps a five-game home losing streak for Wichita dating back to May 30 vs. Springfield.

Kyler Fedko&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;connected on solo blasts to left field in the bottom halves of the third and fourth innings. Fedko’s second round-tripper of the season left the bat at 105 MPH, while Ross’s fourth doubled the Wind Surge advantage to 2-0 a third of the way through the ball game.

Junior Perez and Denzel Clarke's run-scoring doubles tied Midland's game in the top of the fourth.&nbsp;Jorel Ortega&nbsp;slugged Wichita’s third home run of the night, a two-run blast for his third of the season in the bottom of the fifth to put Wichita ahead 4-2.

Tanner Schobel&nbsp;brought in Fedko on a sacrifice fly to center an inning later in the sixth, forcing Midland to dig into their bullpen. The sac fly made Schobel the fourth Wind Surge hitter to record an RBI on the night.

Luke Keaschall&nbsp;singled home Ross on a knock to left after the stretch in the seventh.&nbsp;Carson McCusker&nbsp;grounded a hard chopper to third that found its way to the outfield after an infield error to plate&nbsp;Jake Rucker&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jeferson Morales. Kansas men’s golf senior Gunnar Broin and&nbsp;KU alum Gary Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, will represent the Jayhawks at the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, June 13-16.&nbsp;

Woodland, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, is a four-time winner on the PGA TOUR after turning pro in 2007.&nbsp;Because of his win at the championship in 2019, Woodland is an automatic exemption to play in the U.S. Open until 2029.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Broin is set to make his PGA Tour and major championship debut after pushing through final qualifying in Columbus, Ohio on June 3, also known as Golf’s Longest Day. One of just five qualifiers in the 68-player field, Broin survived a four-for-three spot playoff and punched his ticket to Pinehurst.

For the opening two rounds, Woodland will be grouped with Justin Rose and Webb Simpson. The group will tee off for the first round on Thursday at 7:02 a.m. CT off hole 10. Keeping the same group for the second round on Friday, Woodland’s group will tee it up at 12:47 p.m. off hole 1.&nbsp;

Broin will be grouped with Maxwell Moldovan and Taisei Shimizu for&nbsp;Thursday’s opening round and will tee off at&nbsp;1:31 p.m. from hole 1. On Friday, the same group will tee off at 7:46 a.m. off hole 10.&nbsp;

The low 60 scorers and ties will play the final 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Trevino capped a six-run first inning with a three-run homer, Gleyber Torres added a three-run drive in the seventh and the New York Yankees romped over the Kansas City Royals 11-5 Wednesday night for their third straight win in the four-game series.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a 449-foot, two-run homer into shrubbery next to a waterfall beyond left-center, a night after hitting a 446-foot home run over three fences beyond center field.

Stanton has five home runs at Kauffman, two to left field and two to center.

“We got to get right field now, so I got one more game to do it,” Stanton said.

The major league-best Yankees (49-21) have won 12 of their last 15 games and have outscored the Royals 25-8 in the series.

New York has scored 10 runs in the first inning of the three games and leads the major leagues with 57 first-inning runs. The Yankees are 25-3 when scoring in first with a .296 batting average, 20 homers and a .971 OPS.

“A lot of good things, obviously, happened in that first inning,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Everyone putting together really good at-bats and capped off by a no-doubter by Trevvy. ... That’s a good offense, and they're playing well, getting some contributions from everyone.”

Tight end Joeseph Skipworth, a three-star prospect from Pace High School in Pace, Florida, announced on X Wednesday morning that he will join the Jayhawks next year.

Skipworth is the sixth member of KU’s 2025 recruiting class, following quarterback David McComb, linebacker Malachi Curvey, offensive linemen Anderson Kopp and Juju Marks and running back John Kelly.

Celebrate Ag Day is scheduled for the Big 12 home opener when the Wildcats host Oklahoma State. Following a bye week and two-game road trip, the Cats will welcome KU in the highly anticipated Sunflower Showdown on October 26 for this year's Homecoming game. 

K-State closes out the home schedule with back-to-back games beginning on November 16 vs. Big 12 newcomer Arizona State for the annual Fort Riley Day promotion. Senior Day is set for November 23 against Cincinnati.

DALLAS (AP) — Kristaps Porzingis has a dislocated tendon in his lower left leg but hasn't been ruled out for Game 3 of the NBA Finals for the Boston Celtics against the Dallas Mavericks. The team says the injury to Porzingis occurred in the third quarter of Boston's 105-98 victory in Game 2. It's unrelated to the right calf strain that sidelined the 7-foot-2 Latvian for 10 consecutive playoff games. The team calls injury rare and says Porzingis' availability is day-to-day. Boston takes a 2-0 series lead into Game 3 on Wednesday night in Dallas.

Jon Rahm withdraws from the US Open with a left foot infection

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Jon Rahm has withdrawn from the U.S. Open with a foot injury. Rahm says in a social media post that he has consulted doctors and it was best for the long run that he not play this week at Pinehurst No. 2. Rahm had to withdraw last week at a LIV event in Houston with an infection between the end toes on his left foot. He was hopeful antibiotics would help heal the infection and let him play. Rahm told Spanish media he was worried about compensations to his swing if he tried to adjust for the injured foot.

Panthers take an extra day before 2,500-mile trek to Canada, moving closer to first Cup Final trophy

As the Edmonton Oilers boarded their flight back to Alberta for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday, the Florida Panthers remained in South Florida. They'll fly out Wednesday, which gives them an extra day's rest before a six-plus hour flight 2,543 miles to the other side of the continent. It helps that the NHL gave the teams two days of rest between Games 2 and 3, given this is the furthest distance between two teams in a final in NHL history. McIlroy and his wife filed a voluntary notice of dismissal of their divorce proceedings on Tuesday in Palm Beach County, Florida. McIlroy says in a statement to The Guardian that they have realized their best future is as a family together. He says he's thankful they have resolved their differences and look forward to a new start.

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler arrives at the U.S. Open with his peers in awe of what he's doing. Scheffler just won the Memorial. It's his fifth win of the year, all of them big tournaments against the best fields. No one has won that much before the U.S. Open since Tom Watson. How did he get this good? Scheffler has a collection of sweaty old caps he keeps in a gym. He's accumulated them since he was a teenager. DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Six years ago, Ilkay Gündogan's place on the German national team was in question over a photograph with Turkey's president. Now he's the team captain. When Gündogan leads the German national team out against Scotland in the European Championship opener Friday, he will be its first captain of Turkish heritage at a major tournament. While Gündogan had to choose which country to represent on the field, fans can support both. The Turkish national team is also counting on enthusiastic support as it aims to get past the group stage for the first time since 2008.

The US cricket team is closing in on a major achievement at the Twenty20 World Cup

The United States national cricket team already made a dent in the hierarchy of the game by beating Pakistan last week at the Twenty20 World Cup. The team's next game is set for Wednesday against India outside New York at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. The Americans aren't expected to win that one, but neither were they expected to beat Pakistan. The U.S. team has a good chance to advance to the quarterfinal round at the tournament with another match against Ireland still to come on Friday. Pakistan needs to beat Ireland on Sunday to have a chance of advancing.

College World Series might offer glimpse of future with only SEC and ACC teams in the field

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series opens Friday at Charles Schwab Field and, for the first time since the event expanded to eight teams in 1950, only two conferences will be represented on the college game's biggest stage. The Southeastern Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference have combined to send the most teams to the CWS over the last decade, including this year. Their exclusivity in the 2024 field hints at an even greater concentration of power in the sport as college athletics move into an era where players, already able to move around freely, can make more money than ever.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Aaron Judge hit his major league-leading 25th home run with a 436-foot, two-run drive into the fountain behind the center-field seats, and the New York Yankees routed the Kansas City Royals 10-1 on Tuesday night for their 11th win in 14 games.

Giancarlo Stanton followed Judge in the seventh with a 446-foot shot to center against reliever Nick Anderson for his 16th home run of the season. Austin Wells hit a three-run homer in a four-run fourth off starter Brady Singer.

Back in the lineup after his first game off this season, Judge hit his 21st homer in his last 41 games and also singled in New York’s first run. Judge raised his average to .309 and is hitting .419 with 44 RBIs in his last 35 games after batting .197 through May 2.

“I’m trying not to take that for granted. It’s a lot of fun to witness and to watch what he’s doing on a nightly basis,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s just, obviously — amazing physical talent and tools and ability, but now the experience that thousands of at-bats allow you to have that gets applied with that great talent and this is what you’re seeing.”

Despite lofty stats on the scoreboard each time he steps to the plate, Judge doesn't consider himself a hitter at the level of Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera.

“I try not to look up there. Even when I'm hitting .150, I try not to look up there. I try to look at (Juan) Soto's stats,” Judge said. "They're hitting .330, though, .330, 340, which is — that’s pretty impressive. So I don't know if I'll ever get there but we can work towards it, for sure. Yeah, .330 in November, I might feel locked in.”

AL-best New York (48-21) improved to 39-4 when Judge and Stanton homer in the same game, including the playoffs, and to 16-1 against the AL Central this season. The Yankees are a season-best 27 games over .500.

Boone got his 557th victory, moving past Billy Martin into sole possession of seventh among Yankees managers.

Marcus Stroman (6-2) allowed four hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings, boosting his record to 4-0 in his last six starts. Ron Marinaccio struck out Drew Waters, stranding the bases loaded in the sixth.

Soto played right field for the Yankees and went 0 for 2 with a pair of walks before leaving with New York ahead 10-0 in the seventh. After missing the weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of left forearm inflammation, Soto was the designated hitter Monday and went 1 for 3 with a walk.

Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo returned after consecutive days off and went 0 for 4. He is 1 for 33 in June, dropping his average to .221.

“It’s a grind right now and this is what makes you appreciate the sunny days in this game,” Rizzo said, adding he feels “believe it or not, close.”

“It’s tough going through, but this is part of being a baseball player,” Rizzo said.

Anthony Volpe led off with his seventh triple of the season, Soto walked and Judge followed with an RBI single. Alex Verdugo’s groundout advanced the runners and Soto slid home on Stanton’s grounder to third baseman Maikel Garcia, slapping his left hand on the plate ahead of Salvador Perez’s tag.

Singer (4-3) gave up seven runs — six earned — and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.

“I just wish I would have obviously made some better pitches there,” he said.

Kansas City has lost 10 of 15 following an eight-game winning streak.

“I’d be surprised if there’s a team that doesn’t go through this,” manager Matt Quatraro said. “They’re going to keep grinding away.”

Freddy Fermin homered off Marinaccio in the eighth. First baseman/outfielder Nick Pratto made his professional pitching debut with a one-hit ninth for Kansas City in his first big league appearance this season.

Royals: Kansas City did not have an update on OF Hunter Renfroe, who fractured his left big toe in the series opener. Renfroe was placed on the 10-day IL and INF Adam Frazier on the bereavement list. The Royals recalled Pratto and Waters from Triple-A Omaha.

Yankees: OF Jasson Domínguez (Tommy John surgery) was 1 for 5 with an RBI single for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and is batting .440 with two homers and three RBIs in six games with the RailRiders.

LYNCHBURG, Va. –&nbsp;True freshman pitcher Dominic Voegele was voted to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-America First Team, the organization announced on Monday.

Voegele is the first Kansas player to ever be named a First Team Freshman All-American by NCBWA.

Voegele, the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, an All-Big 12 Second Team selection, a Big 12 All-Freshman Team honoree and an USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp invitee, had one of the best freshman seasons by a Kansas pitcher in program history. He finished his rookie campaign with a 7-2 record and a 3.89 ERA in 81.0 innings pitched.

The freshman righty threw eight quality starts and recorded 80 strikeouts compared to only 29 strikeouts. Voegele allowed three earned runs or less in 12 of his 15 starts. He finished the regular season tied for third in the Big 12 in wins (7), tied for fifth in ERA (3.32), seventh in opponent batting average (.228) and tied for seventh in innings pitched (76.0).

The Columbia, Illinois, native was picked in the 2023 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but decided to attend Kansas instead of signing a professional contract.

Voegele is the ninth Kansas player in program history to receive freshman All-American honors. He joins Kodey Shojinaga (2023), James Cosentino (2017), Devin Foyle (2016), Stephen Villines (2014), Wally Marciel (2007), John Nelson (1998 honorable mention), Clint Wyrick (1998 honorable mention) and Jamie Splittorf (1993).
