Coming off a bye, the AFC North-leading Steelers won their fourth game in a row Sunday to improve to 7-2. They are 3-0 since Wilson took over from Justin Fields as the starting QB. Wilson was 14 for 28 for 195 yards, the three TDs and the one pick. Washington led 24-14 but couldn't hold on. It fell to 7-3.

Joey Logano wins Phoenix finale for 3rd NASCAR Cup championship in 1-2 finish for Team Penske

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Joey Logano won his third NACAR championship Sunday with a relentless drive at Phoenix Raceway that gave Team Penske its third major motorsports title in less than a month. Logano held off Penske teammate Ryan Blaney over the final 20 laps to beat him to the Cup Series title by 0.330 seconds. Blaney was trying to become the first back-to-back champion since Jimmie Johnson won five straight from 2006 to 2010. Instead, Logano became the 10th driver in NASCAR history to win three or more championships. Kyle Busch is the only other active driver with multiple titles.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Jake Moody redeemed himself after missing three earlier field goals by booting a 44-yarder as time expired to give the San Francisco 49ers a 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in running back Christian McCaffrey's season debut. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have won just about every way imaginable during a perfect 15-game run that dates to last season: Patrick Mahomes leading last-second touchdown drives, their defense making a stand, and Harrison Butker kicking game-winning field goals.

They added a walk-off block to the list against the Broncos on Sunday.

<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1855715685764407408">Leo Chenal was part of a red wave</a>&nbsp;that crashed through the center of the Denver field goal unit, and the Chiefs linebacker got his hand on Wil Lutz's 35-yard attempt as time expired, allowing Kansas City&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/sports/denver-broncos-kansas-city-chiefs-e0c70031bac895819e5b83d347f168ba">to escape with a 16-14 victory</a>.

“It's a complete shock, you know? Not much I can say about it," Chenal said. “I was really praying for something to happen. That moment is so heavy. There's a second on the clock, they're going to kick a field goal and you feel the weight of the moment.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid indicated they took advantage of something they had seen in the Broncos' field-goal operation.

“We did,” Reid said, “but it's also something we work on like crazy. It normally doesn't work quite like that one.”

The Chiefs had taken the lead on Butker's field goal with 5:57 remaining, but Bo Nix and the Broncos converted a trio of third downs while marching right back down the field. They proceeded to set up Lutz for the winner, but Chenal came up the middle amid a big push by the Kansas City defensive line to get his hand on the kick.

The ball squibbed away toward the Denver sideline as the Chiefs rushed onto the field to celebrate.

“I felt like we outplayed them but we didn't finish,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said. “That one will take a while. It'll sting.”

Mahomes finished with 266 yards passing and a touchdown for the Chiefs, who became only the fifth Super Bowl champion to win its first nine games the next season. That also matches the best start to a season in franchise history, and their 15-game win streak dating to last season is the longest in the NFL since the Packers won 19 in a row from 2010-11.

Travis Kelce had eight catches for 64 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City. DeAndre Hopkins caught four passes for 56 yards, and Kareem Hunt was held to 35 yards rushing but also caught seven passes for 65 yards.

“Any way you win is good in this league,” Mahomes said. “You live for these moments. When you grow up playing football, you live for the walk-off whatever-it-is. And I'm glad we get to experience it together.”

Nix finished with 215 yards passing and two touchdowns for the Broncos (5-5). Courtland Sutton had six catches for 60 yards and a score. And their 13-yard hookup on third-and-6 with 1:45 left is what gave&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFL/status/1855715047949193510">Denver a chance to kick as time expired</a>.

“They just made one extra play. When we thought it was in our hands, it wasn't,” Nix said. “It's tough. And again, it's two good football teams out there playing against each other, and one day it will go our way.”

The Broncos stunned the Chiefs a year ago, forcing five turnovers in a 21-9 win at Denver that ended a 16-game losing streak in the series. And they clearly had the same intention in mind as the AFC West rivals met again Sunday.

Their defense harassed Mahomes throughout the first half, particularly when an injury to Wanya Morris forced rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia into the game. And the Broncos capitalized on offense with two long scoring drives, the first ending with Nix finding Devaughn Vele wide open and the second with Sutton's 32-yard TD catch for a 14-3 lead.

It was Mahomes who got the Chiefs on track, going 7 for 7 for 62 yards on the ensuing drive. When it looked as if it had stalled at the Denver 2, Reid went against his conservative nature on fourth down, and Mahomes hit Kelce for the score.

The Chiefs still trailed 14-10 at the break, meaning they had Denver right where they wanted them.

Unflappable in winning its last eight games when trailing in the second half, Kansas City closed within 14-13 on Butker's chip-shot field goal late in the third quarter. The Chiefs defense then forced back-to-back punts, and Mahomes and the offense drove to the Denver 2, where Butker added the go-ahead kick with just under six minutes remaining.

Plenty of time for the Broncos to drive down the field. Not enough time for them to win.

“I told our team I was proud of the way they fought. I thought we outplayed them," Payton said. “But nonetheless, you have to beat a champion and we weren't able to do it, so obviously gut-wrenching.”

Hutchinson (3-0) shot 56 percent from the field and finished plus-15 on the glass, outrebounding Labette, 36-21.

Labette (1-4) was led by Joshua Thornton with 16 points.&nbsp;

The Blue Dragons led by 21 points late in the third quarter, but were outscored by the Aggies, 26-8, in the final quarter. 

Murray State (4-1) had a chance to tie the game up with just over three seconds left, but made one of two free throws. The Aggies rebounded the miss and had a chance to win, but a jumper was missed and rebounded by the Blue Dragons to run out the clock.

Hutchinson (4-0) was led by Hailey Jackson with a career-high 30 points, her second 30-point game of the season. The sophomore scored 30 against Neosho County on Tuesday, before going scoreless on Friday evening against Tabor JV. She was the only Blue Dragon in double-figure scoring.

Murray State was led by Arissa Garcia with 20 points in the loss.

The Blue Dragons' offense clicked on all cylinders in the win, putting 511 yards on 65 plays (7.9 yards per play).&nbsp;

HutchCC (8-1, 4-1 KJCCC) turned the ball over six times in its 27-22 loss at home to Butler two weeks ago, but on Saturday there were no turnovers committed.

The Blue Dragons also got its starting quarterback, Samari Collier, back on the field after missing the Butler game with an injury. Collier threw for 149 yards on 10 completions and two touchdowns.&nbsp;

The two passing touchdowns came in the second quarter, one a 54-yard pass to Derrick Salley Jr. and another less than two minutes later on a 33-yard connection with Tre Brown.

The Blue Dragon defense came up with two takeaways in the win, an interception for JaQuel Mack and Kollin Collier.&nbsp;

Hutchinson held Highland to 62 yards passing, a team that came in ranked No. 6 in the country in passing yards per game at over 260 a contest.&nbsp;

Highland (5-5, 1-5) gained 136 yards of offense on 60 plays (2.2 yards per play), 74 of which came on the ground.&nbsp;

🏈 Jordan Jr.'s career-day leads No. 3 HutchCC to shutout win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Devin Neal ran for 116 yards and two scores and became Kansas' all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in a 45-36 win over No. 17 Iowa State at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday.

Neal broke June Henley's rushing record with a 14-yard run on his first carry and now has 3,951. Neal's touchdown runs of 13 and 10 yards gave him 43, breaking Henley's mark of 41.

“I'm very happy for Devin and all of his teammates who have been part of this all the way through,” said Kansas coach Lance Leipold, wearing a T-shirt that read “REAL DE4L” representing Neal's No. 4 jersey. “It's because of the type of player he's been and the person he's been. He's humble and hard-working. I'm so happy he did it in front of our home fans in our home away from home this year.

"He's done so much for us on and off the field. He's done so much for us this season. He had another outstanding game today.”

Jalon Daniels finished 12 of 24 for 295 yards and two touchdowns for Kansas (3-6, 2-4 Big 12). None was bigger than a 70-yard strike to Luke Grimm on the second play after Iowa State drove 99 yards to take a 7-0 lead.

“That was a really good drive, an impressive drive for them to go 99 yards,” Leipold said. “It was like, ‘Oh, boy, they really found their stride.’

"For us to answer that quickly really kind of settled it back down and got it back to neutral. That was a big play.”

Daniels was just glad he didn't miss Grimm.

“That pass is not one we've hit a lot recently,” he said. “They took away my 1-, 2- and 3-progression and I saw Luke running across the middle. Sometimes the most wide-open throws are the hardest throws to make.”

Rocco Becht was 24 of 37 for 383 yards and three touchdowns for Iowa State (7-2, 4-2, No. 17 CFP), which has lost two straight after a 7-0 start.

Neal's second touchdown of the game put Kansas up 38-13 in the third quarter.

Carson Hansen scored a 13-yard touchdown for Iowa State to cut it to 38-20. Becht then found Jaylon Jackson for a 27-yard touchdown and Becht ran in the 2-point conversion to cut it to 38-28. Mello Dotson's 25-yard interception return for a touchdown for Kansas made it a 17-point game with 5:58 left.

The Jayhawks ran out the clock after Becht found Jaylin Noel for an 18-yard touchdown.

“We got an early lead and we just weren’t able to sustain it,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “Our offense has to help out our defense at times. We’ve got to find a way. There’s no excuse. The reality is that nobody is going to feel sorry for us.”

Becht engineered a seven-play, 99-yard drive to open the scoring. Becht hit Noel on a 27-yard strike to finish it.

After Daniels' 70-yard pass to Grimm, Neal added a 13-yard touchdown run to give Kansas a lead it never relinquished.

“The best part was getting (the records) in a win,” Neal said. “That's a real good team over there. I was proud to be part of this team.”

Daniels found Quentin Skinner for a 24-yard touchdown to put the Jayhawks up 21-7.

Iowa State: The Cyclones still have a chance to play for the Big 12 title, but their margin for error is all but gone and they will need some help.

Kansas: The Jayhawks can go to a third straight bowl for the first time in program history if they win out. They still have to play BYU and Colorado, the two teams at the top of the standings.

🏈 Devin Neal sets KU career rushing records in victory over Iowa St.

Bobby Allison, founder of racing’s “Alabama Gang” and a NASCAR Hall of Famer, died Saturday. He was 86.

NASCAR released a statement from Allison’s family that said he died at home in Mooresville, North Carolina. A cause of death wasn’t given, but Allison had been in declining health for years.

Allison moved to fourth on NASCAR’s Cup Series victory list last month when chairman Jim France recognized him as the winner of the Meyers Brothers Memorial at Bowman Gray Stadium in North Carolina in 1971. The sanctioning body updated its record books to reflect the decision, giving Allison 85 wins and moving him out of a tie with Darrell Waltrip.

France and longtime NASCAR executive Mike Helton presented Allison with a plaque commemorating the victory. With it, Allison trails only fellow Hall of Famers Richard Petty (200), David Pearson (105) and Jeff Gordon (93) in Cup wins.

Allison was inducted into NASCAR’s second Hall of Fame class, in 2011. He was the 1983 NASCAR champion, finished second in the series title race five times, and a three-time winner of the Daytona 500.

“Bobby was the ultimate fan’s driver,” Allison’s family said in a statement. “He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his fans and would stop to sign autographs and have conversations with them everywhere he went. He was a dedicated family man and friend, and a devout Catholic.”

He helped put NASCAR on the map with more than his driving. His infamous fight with Cale Yarborough in the closing laps of the 1979 Daytona 500 served as one of the sport’s defining moments.

“Cale went to beating on my fist with his nose,” Allison has said repeatedly, often using that phrase to describe the fight. “Cale understands like I do that it really was a benefit to the interest of racing. It proves that we were sincere.”

Born in Miami in 1937, Allison started searching for more racing opportunities outside the Sunshine State. He landed in central Alabama, where he found a number of small, dirt tracks.

He returned to Florida to get brother Donnie and close friend Red Farmer. They set up shop in Hueytown, Alabama, and dominated regional races throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. They were later joined in the Alabama Gang by Jimmy Mears, Neil Bonnett and Bonnett and Allison’s sons Davey and Clifford.

Allison retired in 1988 following a crash that nearly killed him. In June 1987, he wrecked on the opening lap at Talledega Superspeedway. He hit the outside wall and then got T-boned in the driver’s side door. He was initially declared dead upon reaching a local hospital but was later resuscitated.

He eventually regained his memory, re-learned everyday activities and attempted a comeback. But a series of tragedies led Allison to retire. His son, Clifford, was fatally injured during a crash in practice for the second-tier Busch Series at Michigan International Speedway in 1992. A year later, son Davey was killed in a helicopter crash at Talladega.

Three years after that, Bobby and wife Judy divorced. They reconnected four years later at their daughter-in-law’s wedding and were remarried in 2000. They remained together until Judy’s death in 2015.

Allison was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1992 and into the NASCAR Hall of Fame along with Ned Jarrett, Bud Moore, Pearson and Lee Petty.

“Bobby Allison personified the term ‘racer,’” France said in statement. “Though he is best known as one of the winningest drivers in NASCAR Cup Series history, his impact on the sport extends far beyond the record books.

Allison is one of 10 drivers to have won NASCAR’s career “grand slam” that includes the Cup Series’ most iconic races: the Daytona 500, the Winston 500, the Coca-Cola 600 and the Southern 500.

Allison made six IndyCar Series starts for Roger Penske, including a pair of Indy 500s.

He was a dedicated family man and friend, and a devout Catholic.”He helped put NASCAR on the map with more than his driving. His infamous fight with Cale Yarborough in the closing laps of the 1979 Daytona 500 served as one of the sport’s defining moments.“Cale went to beating on my fist with his nose,” Allison has said repeatedly, often using that phrase to describe the fight. “Cale understands like I do that it really was a benefit to the interest of racing. It proves that we were sincere.”Born in Miami in 1937, Allison started searching for more racing opportunities outside the Sunshine State. MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Brenden Hausen knocked down six treys and scored 22 points to lead Kansas State to a 77-64 win over Cleveland State Saturday despite not scoring a point over the final two minutes.

Max Jones knocked down his only 3-pointer of the game with 2:11 left to give the Wildcats a 77-57 lead, David Castillo and Taj Manning both missed from beyond the arc in the final minutes.

Jones opened the game by tipping in his own missed layup, but Chase Robinson answered less than a minute later to get the Vikings even. Kansas State then rolled off eight straight points to take the lead for good. Coleman Hawkins hit two free throws midway through the half to push the lead to double digits and the Wildcats led by a dozen, 36-24, at intermission.

David N'Guessan and Hawkins each finished with 12 points and Jones added 11 for Kansas State (2-0). The Wildcats shot an efficient 26 of 45 from the field (57.8%) and was 10 of 19 from beyond the arc while collecting 16 assists on 26 made baskets.

Dylan Arnett scored 10 points and Je'Shawn Stevenson added another 10 off the bench for Cleveland State (1-2), which lost its second straight road game. The Vikings where held to just 23-of-60 shooting from the floor (38.2%), including 6 of 18 from long range.

The Blue Dragons struggled early on, but took advantage of 29 Bluejay turnovers, scoring 29 points off of them.

Hutchinson (3-0) finished the game with 21 steals, four each from Dylan Alexander, Madi Denison, and Kahlen Norris.

Landon Forbes scored a career-high 16 points in the win, while also recording three steals. Brynne Katcher finished with 13 points, knocking down all six free throw attempts.

The Blue Dragons dominated in the paint, outscoring the Bluejays, 44-12. HutchCC finished with 23 fast break points and 35 points from the bench.

HutchCC out-rebounded Tabor, 44-29, including 17 offensive rebounds.

Tabor was led by Ellie McKellips with six points, all coming in the first half.

The Blue Dragons will host Murray State College (4-0) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Arena, as part of the BSN Sports Tip-off Classic.

🏀 No. 1 Dragons too much for Bluejays

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson had 20 points and 10 rebounds for No. 1 Kansas, which blew a 20-point first-half lead against No. 9 North Carolina before holding on for a 92-89 victory when the Tar Heels’ Elliot Cadeau missed a 3-pointer as time expired Friday night.

Zeke Mayo had 21 points and KJ Adams Jr had 14 for the Jayhawks (2-0), who led 49-29 in the first half but trailed 87-83 with 3:28 to go. Dickinson and Mayo responded with a series of baskets to tie the game at 89, and Dickinson’s basket with 1:15 to go and free throw with 12 seconds remaining made it a three-point game.

The Tar Heels (1-1) raced up the floor, but Cadeau’s 3 from the wing was contested and never had a chance.

Seth Trimble scored 19 points to lead North Carolina. RJ Davis had 16 points and Cadeau finished with 12.

It was just the 13th matchup of the Tar Heels and Jayhawks, and first since Kansas rallied from a 16-point deficit to win the 2022 national championship. The only other time they have met on campus was in 1960, when Larry Brown — who would later coach the Jayhawks to the 1988 title — helped the Tar Heels win in Allen Fieldhouse.

Kansas made a repeat seem unlikely when it built a 20-point first-half lead.

But the Tar Heels trimmed the deficit in the second half, and Jae'Lyn Withers' 3-pointer gave them an 80-79 lead with 7:06 to go. The two bluebloods wrestled it away several other times before Kansas finally put the game away.

North Carolina stayed alive by getting to the basket and drawing fouls, ultimately going 28 of 31 from the line. But the lack of production in the paint was a big problem.

Kansas avoided what would have been the biggest blown-lead loss in school history.

Dickinson's basket inside with 1:15 left gave Kansas the lead, and the All-American center's free throw forced North Carolina into needing a 3-pointer to tie the game.

The Blue Dragons got off to a solid start in head coach Kyle Fisher's first season with a 104-53 victory over Hesston College on Tuesday night.

Hutchinson shot 50.7 percent while holding the Larks to 24.2 percent shooting from the floor.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/cannon_bobby_1l4l">Bobby Cannon</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to lead the Blue Dragons with 15 points, leading five players to score in double figures.

The Blue Dragons play Southwestern Christian for the first time on Friday night. The Rams are a Division I Region 5 team from Terrell, Texas. The Rams dropped a 69-68 season-opening decision to Paris and lost 84-76 to Tyler. The Rams defeated Division III opponent Mountain View 98-92 on Wednesday.

Labette suffered a pair of big losses last weekend - 84-39 to Cowley and 109-56 to Independence. The Cardinals earned their first victory with a 93-66 win over the Southwestern College JV on Tuesday in Parsons.

Hutchinson is 4-0 in the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic.

The No. 1-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team plays host to the BSN Sports Tip-Off Classic, the first of two classics on the schedule this weekend at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Hutchinson (2-0) will play the Tabor College JV on Friday and Murray State (3-0) on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Barton is the fourth team in the tournament.

All four BSN Classic women's games will be streamed live on the Blue Dragon Sports Network.
