🏀 KSHSAA state tournament schedules for all seven classifications

Kamryn Thomas and Valentino Simon, each members of the 2023-24 HutchCC Blue Dragon men's basketball team are headed to the NCAA Tournament after the University of Omaha Mavericks won the Summit League tournament title on Sunday.

The Mavericks defeated St. Thomas, 85-75, to claim their first-ever Summit League tournament title and earn their berth to March Madness for the first time in program history. Omaha is 22-12 on the season, the 22 wins are also the most in program history.

Thomas was scoreless in the championship game on Sunday, but played 15 minutes and secured a rebound, two assists and one steal. 

He has played and started 22 games for the Mavericks, averaging 5.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in nearly 24 minutes per contest.

Thomas played one season at HutchCC, appearing in 33 games, making 31 starts, averaging a team-high 16.2 points, 6.1 rebounds in nearly 30 minutes per contest.

Simon has yet to see any playing time this season for the Mavericks.

He averaged 13.4 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds for the Blue Dragons last winter in 36 games played and started.&nbsp;

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Max Strus had 17 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the NBA-leading Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 112-100 for their 14th consecutive victory. The Cavs became just the second team to win 14 straight while scoring at least 110 points in each of those games. The 1985-86 Boston Celtics also accomplished the feat. Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 30 points while moving into 50th place on the NBA's career scoring list.

Russell Henley with a late charge and a big eagle wins Bay Hill for biggest career win

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Russell Henley has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the biggest victory of his career. And he might not have seen this one coming. Henley was three shots behind Collin Morikawa with five holes to play at Bay Hill when everything changed so suddenly. There was a two-shot swing on the 14th hole when Henley made birdie and Morikawa made bogey. And on the par-5 16th, Henley chipped in from some 50 feet away for eagle to take the lead. He closed with two pars for a 70 and a one-shot victory over the hard-luck Morikawa.

DK Metcalf is leaving Seattle for Pittsburgh with a new deal in tow, AP sources say

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers finally have their established big-play wide receiver. The Seattle Seahawks are sending two-time Pro Bowler D.K. Metcalf to Pittsburgh for at least a second-round pick, two sources with knowledge of the deal tell The Associated Press. The sources spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was not official. Metcalf will receive a new five-year, $150 million contract in Pittsburgh. His exodus from Seattle comes during a tumultuous stretch for the Seahawks, which dealt quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders last week.

Buffalo Bills release NFL's active sacks leader Von Miller in a salary cap-saving move

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills made the long-anticipated decision to release Von Miller, parting ways with the aging edge rusher whose contract proved too expensive for his dwindling playing time and production. GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Oluchi Okananwa had 22 points and 10 rebounds to help No. 11 Duke rally from a 14-point deficit to beat No. 7 N.C. NC State fires coach Kevin Keatts a year after improbable ACC title and Final Four run

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — N.C. State has fired men's basketball coach Kevin Keatts. That marks an abrupt end to an eight-year tenure and comes less than a year after the Wolfpack's improbable run to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and the Final Four. Lando Norris will have to defy plenty of history to win the Formula 1 title this year. There's his friend-turned-rival Max Verstappen's bid for a fifth title in a row. Just like the only driver to achieve that feat, Michael Schumacher, Verstappen is a hard racer who isn't afraid to bend the rules. Then there's Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time champion going for a record eighth title in 2025. It's his first season with Ferrari, which is itching to end a wait for a drivers' title going back to 2007.

After leading one of the best indoor seasons in program history this season, Hutchinson Community College track and field head coach Robert Spies was named the NJCAA Central Region Coach of the Year on Saturday at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas.

Spies led the Blue Dragon men to the program's first Region 6 and Jayhawk West indoor team championship in program history. The fifth-year head coach also led the Blue Dragon women to a third-place Region 6 finish and Jayhawk West third-place finish – both of those placings were the best in indoor women's history.

The Blue Dragon men won the Region 6 team championship with 109 team points, winning by 16 points. The Blue Dragons also captured their first Jayhawk West indoor team championship in program history with 158 points winning by 46 points.

The Blue Dragons earned four individual regional event championships and scored in 13 of 20 events.

Over the course of the season, the Blue Dragon men's track team broke seven school records.

The Blue Dragon women scored a program-high 85 points to place third in the region held at Pittsburg State. The Blue Dragons also finished third in the Jayhawk West standings with 112 points.

The Blue Dragon women broke two school records in the 2025 indoor season.

For the second and third time this week, the Hutchinson Community College softball team put together late-inning rallies for wins and earned a doubleheader sweep of the Labette Cardinals on Sunday at Fun Valley.
Trailing Game 1 by two runs in the fifth inning,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/kruger_kaibryn_wwcp">Kaibryn Kruger</a>&nbsp;tied the game with an infield single and later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as the Blue Dragons came back to win 10-9.
Then trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Addi Lutz &ndash; the hero of Hutchinson's 7-6, nine-inning win over No. 14 Butler on Thursday &ndash; launched a go-ahead three-run home run and the Dragons rallied for an 8-3 win in Game 2.
The Blue Dragons have now won 7 of the last 8 games and is 11-5. Hutchinson returns to Jayhawk Conference play with Seward County in a home doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Fun Valley.
GAME 2 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 8, Labette 3 The Blue Dragons trailed 3-1 in the second game after 3 1/2 innings and pulled within one run on a Lutz single to center in the fourth that scored&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/stauffer_gabby_t8qf">Gabby Stauffer</a>.
Then in the sixth,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/backhaus_brooke_ngsp">Brooke Backhaus</a>&nbsp;reached on an error and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/brawner_brie_hldl">Brie Brawner</a>&nbsp;walked. Lutz then hit the first pitch she saw off the scoreboard in right-center field for a three-run home run and a 5-3 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/dice_emily_75aj">Emily Dice</a>&nbsp;added an RBI double and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/golly_taylor_l19d">Tailor Golly</a>&nbsp;had a two-run double to complete a six-run inning.
Lutz had her second game-winning RBI of the week. Against Butler on Thursday, her two-run single in the bottom of the seventh tied the Grizzlies at 6-all. She then had a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 Blue Dragon victory.
The Blue Dragon bullpen tossed five shutout innings to keep Hutchinson in the game.

Schmidt limited the damage to three runs and then worked two more scoreless innings. Golly threw out a baserunner and Schmidt had a pair of strikeouts in the fourth. Schmidt then started a 1-6-3 inning-ending double play on her last pitch of the game.

She scored the game-tying run on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/kruger_kaibryn_wwcp">Kaibryn Kruger</a>'s infield RBI single. The Dragons then took a 10-9 lead when Kruger scored on a wild pitch.
Schmidt (2-1) pitched scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh in earn her second victory of the week. She retired the final eight batters she faced with one strikeout.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School alum Kaleb Hammeke scored 22 points to lead Fort Hays State University to the MIAA Tournament championship Sunday at Municipal Auditorium.

Hammeke sank two free throws with 27 seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 72-71 lead over Central Oklahoma, sealing the game-winning points and sending FHSU to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Hammeke played all 40 minutes of the championship game, finishing with 22 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 6-of-6 at the free-throw line. Over three tournament games, the graduate student averaged 20.7 points, 5.0 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 38.0 minutes per contest.

His younger brother, Lucas Hammeke, also on the FHSU roster, scored six points and recorded a team-high five assists in the title game. He averaged 5.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists in the tournament.

Kaleb Hammeke, a 2019 Trinity Catholic graduate, became FHSU’s all-time leading scorer earlier this season. The 6-foot guard has totaled 2,048 points and 575 rebounds in 142 career games, all of which he started.

Lucas Hammeke, a 2021 Trinity Catholic graduate, has appeared in 57 career games, averaging 2.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game.

The Tigers secured their second MIAA Tournament title and their first since 2011. They enter the NCAA Division II Tournament with a 22-9 record, finishing 12-7 in MIAA play.&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash;&nbsp;For the third time in 11 days, Kansas had a walk-off victory at Hoglund Ballpark as the Jayhawks beat Milwaukee 10-9 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon to secure a four-game series sweep in front of a crowd of 1,828 fans that included the KU band for the first time ever. Kansas added another win to its best start in program history, with the Jayhawks now sitting at 14-1 overall on the season. &nbsp; Kansas trailed 6-0 before even coming to bat on Sunday. The Jayhawks fought back and used a six-run sixth inning to help get back in the game. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs and linebacker Nick Bolton have agreed to a three-year, $45 million contract that keeps the quarterback of their defense out of free agency, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been announced.

The Chiefs selected the 24-year-old Bolton in the second round of the 2021 draft out of Missouri, making the Texas native a homegrown star of sorts. He has started 53 of the 57 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past four seasons, and helped the Chiefs win a pair of Super Bowl rings and make it to the big game again this past season.

Bolton’s best season came in 2022, when he made 180 tackles in 17 games while picking off a pair of passes for a team that ultimately beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl. He was limited to eight games because of injuries two years ago, and this past season appeared in 16 games, making 106 tackles with an interception and a career-high three sacks.

Most importantly, the Chiefs value Bolton’s high IQ in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s complex scheme. He wears the helmet with the radio connection to the coaching staff, and he’s responsible for making sure the rest of the defense is properly aligned.

The Chiefs have been busy as they prepare for the start of free agency this week.

This past Wednesday, the Chiefs&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-bears-joe-thuney-trade-6d254efcbfad2dd3442864ca6d3bc57f">traded All-Pro offensive guard Joe Thuney</a>&nbsp;to the Bears for a fourth-round pick in the 2026 draft. The decision to deal the 32-year-old Thuney was largely a financial one, freeing up $16 million in salary cap space that the Chiefs planned to use to help re-sign some of their stars — such as Bolton — and address other needs.

The Chiefs have used the franchise tag on Pro Bowl offensive guard Trey Smith, which means they are obligated to pay him $23.4 million next season unless the side work out a long-term deal. Some of the money they saved from Thuney’s contract they could use to sign the 25-year-old Smith to a long-term contract extension.

They also used some of the salary cap space Saturday when the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-hollywood-brown-1d81799b407bab62a13b64a9556859ee">Chiefs agreed with wide receiver Marquise Brown</a>&nbsp;on an $11 million contract for next season. The deal is similar to the one-year contract Brown signed last season, when he hoped he could parlay a big season with quarterback Patrick Mahomes into a lucrative long-term contract.

Instead, Brown dislocated a shoulder joint on the first snap of the preseason, and surgery kept Brown out&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-city-chiefs-analysis-26984fac3c36156943cca2224a8d1125">until Week 15 of the regular season</a>. Brown had nine catches for 91 yards in two games before sitting out the final week of the season. BOSTON (AP) — LeBron James didn't sound overly concerned about the strained groin that he suffered in the waning minutes of Los Angeles' loss to Boston. He also wasn't willing to put a timetable on how fast he could be back on the court as the Lakers look to maintain their recent surge in the standings. He said his first thoughts went to his first season in Los Angeles in 2018 when he suffered a groin injury during a Christmas Day matchup with Golden State. He missed the next 17 games and the injury bothered him for most of the remainder of the season. The good news is he doesn't believe this latest injury is as severe as the 2018 one. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Xavier Worthy was released Saturday after a district attorney in Texas declined to pursue charges against the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver following an arrest in which he had been accused of felony domestic violence. Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick told the Austin American-Statesman his office had spoken with witnesses and was not accepting the case. Dick also said Worthy and his lawyers were fully cooperating with the investigation. In a statement, Worthy's attorneys said their client was innocent of the charge against him. Williamson County includes parts of Austin, where Worthy played college football at the University of Texas.

Magomed Ankalaev wins undisputed light heavyweight belt with unanimous decision over Alex Pereira

Shiffrin raced through steady falling snow with a first-run lead in Are, Sweden yet was only 25th-fastest in the second run. Shiffrin finished in third place trailing 0.19 seconds behind the winner Katharina Truppe. Katharina Liensberger was second, 0.05 behind her Austria teammate. Shiffrin said "Katharina Day!" as she hugged the two racers who beat her. Shiffrin's 156th top-3 result in her World Cup career breaks a tie with Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark.

LUBBOCK, Texas – For the second-straight day, Hutchinson Community College sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2024-25/bios/legrand_leo_gfpl">Leo LeGrand</a>&nbsp;broke a Blue Dragon school record in the 800 meters.

There was an added perk to Saturday's record-breaking run for LeGrand – a national championship.

The sophomore from Mansfield, Texas, became the eighth Blue Dragon in program history to win an NJCAA Indoor national championship, winning the 800-meter run on Saturday at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

LeGrand won the championship with a Blue Dragon-record time of 1 minute, 50.12 seconds. He qualified for Saturday's finals with a Blue Dragon-record of 1:52.40, which was the third-fastest time in Friday's preliminary round.

LeGrand is the first Blue Dragon to win an NJCAA Indoor national championship since 2020 when Andrew Kibet won both the 1,000 meters and Mile run national titles.

LeGrand earned his second first-team All-America award. As a freshman, LeGrand was the national runner-up in the 1,000 meters in 2024.

The Region 6 champion Blue Dragons placed 16th in the 2025 NJCAA Indoor championships with 17 points. South Plains won the men's title with 119.5 points. New Mexico Junior College was second with 86 points. Barton was the top Region 6 team, finishing seventh with 36 points.

The Blue Dragons completed the series win as freshman pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/rosser_lachlan_s3z7">Lachlan Rosser</a>&nbsp;tossed a three-hit complete game in an 11-1 win in seven innings.
Now 16-3, the Blue Dragons match the best start in program history through 19 games, tying the 2006 Blue Dragons. The Dragons are 3-1 in Jayhawk West play. Hutchinson plays host to the Cowley Tigers at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and will play the Barton Cougars in a four-game Jayhawk West series beginning Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field. Dodge City is now 12-6 and 1-3.
GAME 1 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 5, Dodge City 2 Stokes, who went 8 for 13 in the four-game series, started the game off with two-run single in the bottom of the first inning. Stokes then led off the third inning with a triple and scored on a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/allen_griffin_bmj4">Nick Glantz</a>&nbsp;ground ball for a 3-0 lead.
That gave Blue Dragon pitchers&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/wolcott_jake_0h6q">Jake Wolcott</a>&nbsp;and Collin Flores the run support they needed to get the victory.
Wolcott (2-0) pitched a season-long five innings to earn the victory. He scattered five hits and allowed two runs and two walks with two strikeouts. He pitched with runners on base in every inning, but got out of early jams when catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mazza_antony_9347">Anthony Mazza</a>&nbsp;threw out two Dodge City base stealers in the second and third innings. The Conquistadors broke through with two runs in the fifth against Wolcott, which cut the Dragon lead to 4-2.
Flores entered the game in the sixth inning and retired all six batters he faced for his first save of the season. Flores had two strikeouts.
Stokes led the Dragons' seven-hit attack going 2 for 3 with a triple, run scored and two RBIs. Mazza went 2 for 3 with a double and triple with a run and RBI. Mazza's fourth-inning triple that scored&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/tygart_baker_ked6">C.J. Reid</a>&nbsp;gave the Dragons a 4-0 lead.
Reid went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a stolen base.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/fegen_scotty_n1yk">Scotty Fegen</a>&nbsp;had an RBI single in the sixth to score pinch runner&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/hamrick_cael_iiy0">Cael Hamrick</a>&nbsp;for a 5-2 Dragon lead.
GAME 2 RECAP &ndash; Hutchinson 11, Dodge City 1 (7 innings) Rosser's first start of the season became the first complete game of the season for the Blue Dragons. Rosser allowed just three hits and one earned run, tying a season high for strikeouts with 6.
Rosser (1-1) faced no more than four batters in any one inning. The Dragons got defensive held with an inning-ending double play in the third inning and Mazza throwing out a Conquistador baserunner in the seventh inning.
Offensively the Blue Dragons scored four runs in the first inning.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/mustow_adam_sf8t">A.J. Mustow</a>&nbsp;had a two-run double, while&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/griffin_leo_z3t1">Leo Griffin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/allen_griffin_bmj4">Nick Glantz</a>&nbsp;had RBI hits in the inning. The Dragons added three runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Mustow had his first career four-hit game going 4 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Blue Dragons.
Griffin went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Glantz had an RBI double and two sacrifice flies for a three-RBI game going 1 for 3.
The Blue Dragons had 12 hits with six doubles.
The Blue Dragons scored three runs in the seventh to get the game to a run-rule walk-off.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/maher_quinn_nqj4">Quinn Maher</a>&nbsp;led off the inning with a home run. Stokes added an RBI double and then scored the Dragons' 11th run on Glantz's sacrifice fly.</div>

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/green_aiyanna_nkel">Aiyanna Green</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/picolet_jordan_z3sx">Jordyn Picolet</a>&nbsp;both had Hutchinson Community College women's track and field indoor Top-10 performances on Saturday on the final day of the 2025 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center.

Green, a sophomore thrower from Hutchinson, had the best Blue Dragon finish of Day 2 with a ninth-place performance in the women's weight throw. Green posted a career-best throw of 50 feet, 6 inches (15.39 meters). That throw ranks third in Blue Dragon women's indoor history.

Picolet, a sophomore distance runner from Council Grove, Kansas, posted the fifth-best time in the women's 1,000-meter run, finishing 12th with a time of 5:18.67.

The Blue Dragons finished in a tie for 25th place with five points. Those points came from Deisheline Mayer Scott and&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wtrack/2024-25/bios/montaque_janiel_88cd">Janiel Montaque</a>, who placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the shot put on Friday.

👟 Dragons post two top-10 times on final day at NJCAA indoor 

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Hutchinson High School graduate Myles Thompson has delivered big plays in March throughout his basketball career. Now, he'll have the chance to do it on the biggest stage.

Thompson and his Southern Illinois Edwardsville (SIUE) team secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament with a 69-48 win over Southeast Missouri State in the Ohio Valley Conference championship game Saturday in Evansville, Indiana. The Cougars will enter the big dance with a 22-11 record.

Thompson contributed nine points and a team-high seven rebounds in the victory. This is the first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Cougars.

In his first season at SIUE, he has played in 32 games, making one start while averaging 5.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 18 minutes per game.

Before joining SIUE, Thompson helped lead Barton Community College to the NJCAA Division I national championship last March at Hutchinson Sports Arena. He had a breakout tournament, averaging 20.3 points and 8.3 rebounds, including three 20-point performances in four games as Barton captured its first-ever national title.

Thompson earned first-team all-conference honors and was named to the all-tournament teams for both the Region VI Tournament and the NJCAA National Tournament.

SIUE, an NCAA Division I program in the Ohio Valley Conference, is located in Edwardsville, Illinois. The Cougars are coached by former Butler Community College coach Brian Barone.
