EDMOND, Okla. – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team out-hit NEO on Saturday, but the Golden Norse were able to do way more damage with their hits than the Blue Dragons.

Six Blue Dragon pitchers walked a combined 12 batters and hit one as NEO used a four-run third inning and a seven-run fourth to defeat Hutchinson 15-9 on Saturday in the final game for the Dragons at the UCO Juco Festival.

The Blue Dragons went 1-2 in the UCO Juco Festival and fall to 3-2 overall. Hutchinson will now travel to Labette for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Monday in Parsons. This doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved up to Monday because of potential bad weather on Tuesday in southeast Kansas.

The 12 walks allowed tied for the fourth most allowed in Blue Dragon single-game history. The last time the Dragons walked at least 12 in a game was April 12, 2018 at MCC-Longview. Seven of those walks came around to score.

Another tough stat against the Dragons on Saturday was NEO scored nine of their 15 runs after two were out. All seven runs in the Norse fourth came after two were out.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2019-20/bios/firmature_zach_o3mq">Zach Firmature</a>&nbsp;(1-1) took his first loss of the season with runs earned runs, three hits and three walks allowed in three innings of work. Firmature strike out five. Argo went 2 for 4 with a triple and home run.

Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2019-20/bios/reetz_will_pauk">Will Reetz</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2019-20/bios/steele_jenner_aivw">Jenner Steele</a>&nbsp;both homered for the Blue Dragons. Steele went 2 for 4, adding a double with his first career home run.&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2019-20/bios/callahan_austin_ilmr">Austin Callahan</a>&nbsp;also had two hits for Hutchinson.

Tyler Small and Augustus Collins each homered for NEO and drove in four runs each.

The Blue Dragons got off to a great start with Argo's two-run triple in the top of the first inning.&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2019-20/bios/reetz_will_pauk">Will Reetz</a>&nbsp;led off the second with a home run to make it 3-1 Hutchinson.

NEO then scored 14 runs in its final four offensive innings of the seven-inning contest. The Dragons scored single tallies in the fourth and fifth before a four-run uprising in the sixth. GAINESVILLE, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College softball team had some fun in the seventh innings of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader at North Central Texas College.

Trailing by a run entering the seventh inning of Game 1, the Blue Dragons exploded for six runs in their final at-bat en route to an 11-7 victory. Trailing by four runs entering the final inning of Game 2, Hutchinson scored three, but stranded the tying run at third in a 7-6 loss to NCTC to split the doubleheader.

The Blue Dragons are now 4-2 overall. Hutchinson completes its weekend trip south with a Noon doubleheader on Sunday against Murray State in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Hutchinson plays its 2020 home opener on Wednesday against the Oklahoma Wesleyan JV at Fun Valley.

The first game featured four lead changes with the final exchange coming in the Blue Dragon seventh.

A walk and an error loaded the bases with one out. GAME 2 RECAPThe Blue Dragons were shut out to NCTC pitcher Elizabeth Schroeter. By the time the Blue Dragons cracked the scoreboard, North Central led 6-0 after a five-run fifth.

A Williams RBI groundout and Rollin two-out RBI single in the fifth cut the Dragon deficit to 6-2. Down 7-2, Pennycuff had another run-producing hit in the top of the sixth to plate Dunn and cut the deficit to four after six innings.

NORMAN, Okla. –&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mtrack/2019-20/bios/thiel_wyatt_65pd">Wyatt Thiel</a>&nbsp;became the 14th Hutchinson Community College men's track and field indoor national qualifier with a high day at the University of Central Oklahoma Alumni Classic held at the University of Oklahoma's indoor track facility.

Thiel blew away his old season best clearance in the high jump and reached the NJCAA automatic qualifying standard of 6 feet, 6 3/4 inches to finish fourth in the event on Saturday.

Thiel's previous best clearance this season has been 5-10 3.4.

Thiel becomes 14th Blue Dragon National Qualifier



FORT WORTH, Texas&nbsp;– TCU tied an opponent school-record high with 15 made 3-point field goals, including 5 from senior&nbsp;Desmond Bane, as the Horned Frogs snapped a 7-game losing streak with a 68-57 win over Kansas State on Saturday afternoon before 6,288 fans at Schollmaier Arena.

The 15 triples by the Horned Frogs (14-11, 5-7 Big 12) were the most allowed by a Wildcat team in more 15 years, tying the mark set originally by Missouri on Feb. 28, 1998 and tied by Saint Louis on Jan. 3, 2004. In all, five players connected on at least one 3-pointer, including a combined 9 by Bane (5) and graduate student&nbsp;Jaire Grayer&nbsp;(4).

Despite record amount of 3-pointers, K-State (9-16, 2-10 Big 12) still had an opportunity to snap its losing streak, as the Wildcats led 50-48 after senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6405">Xavier Sneed's</a>&nbsp;third consecutive field goal that forced TCU head coach&nbsp;Jamie Dixon&nbsp;to call a timeout with 8:09 to play. The Sneed jumper capped a 10-2 run by the Wildcats after they trailed 46-40 at the 11:20 mark after a Bane 3-pointer.

The two teams traded baskets out of the timeout, including a fourth straight by Sneed, but the momentum shifted on the next possession, as yet another Bane 3-pointer ignited a 15-1 run by the Horned Frogs over the next 5:12 that propelled them to a 66-53 advantage with 1:18 to play.

Both teams connected on 23 made field goals in the contest, but TCU's 15 made 3-pointers proved to be difference, as K-State made just 2 of 12 attempts from long range. For the game, the Horned Frogs connected on 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the field, including 45.5 percent (15-of-33) from 3-point range, while the Wildcats hit on 42.6 percent (23-of-54) of their field goals, including 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from long range.

Bane led three TCU players in double figures with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-14 field goals, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, to go with a game-high 8 assists, 8 rebounds and 4 blocked shots, while Grayer and sophomore&nbsp;R.J. Nembhard&nbsp;added 15 points each.

3-Point Barrage Carries TCU Past K-State, 68-57

LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;– A career-high 24 points from junior Marcus Garrett was the highlight as No. 3 Kansas topped the Oklahoma Sooners, 87-70, Saturday afternoon inside Allen Fieldhouse. Garrett was joined in double figures by sophomore Devon Dotson (19 points) and Udoka Azubuike, who turned in his 11th&nbsp;double-double of the season, as the Jayhawks claimed their 10th-straight victory.

The win improved Kansas to 22-3 on the year and 11-1 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma fell to 16-9 in its 2019-20 campaign and to 6-6 in the league.

MOMENT OF THE GAMEWith the Jayhawks trailing 27-26 and under five minutes to play in the first half, junior Marcus Garrett collected steals on consecutive Sooner possessions to ignite the Allen Fieldhouse crowd as well as the Kansas offense. Garrett’s two steals led to four-straight KU points and kicked off a 15-5 run over the final 4:40 of the half to turn the one-point deficit into a nine-point lead, 41-32, as the teams headed to the intermission. KU’s scoring run overflowed into the second stanza, as the Jayhawks came out of the break on a 16-5 run over the first five minutes of the half. In all, Kansas outscored the visitors 31-10 over the middle 10 minutes of the contest, with Garrett’s plays on the defensive end sparking the impressive stretch.

Garrett was joined in double figures by sophomore Devon Dotson (19 points) and Udoka Azubuike, who turned in his 11th&nbsp;double-double of the season, as the Jayhawks claimed their 10th-straight victory.The win improved Kansas to 22-3 on the year and 11-1 in Big 12 play. (AP) — Major League Baseball celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Negro National League by joining with the Major League Baseball Players Association to announce their second joint $1 million donation to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, The museum was founded in 1990 and moved into its current facility in 1994. The Negro National League, the first Negro major league, was founded by eight entrepreneurs at the Paseo YMCA in the eastern part of Kansas City. Part of the donation will be used to help renovate the YMCA building that will house the Buck O'Neil Education and Research Center.

WACO, Texas (AP) — The top five scorers for No. 1 Baylor all began their college careers elsewhere. The team has now won a school-record 21 games in a row and been the top-ranked team in the AP Top 25 four weeks in a row. Guards Jared Butler, MaCio Teague, Davion Mitchell and Devonte Bandoo had never all played in a game together before this season. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas junior forward Jericho Sims has been struggling with a back injury that is still being evaluated as the Longhorns get ready to play at Iowa State. Blue Dragon Softball weekly schedule drastically changes

DODGE CITY - Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team used a couple of key second-half scoring runs to clinch an important Jayhawk West road victory on Wednesday night at Dodge City.

Leading by three points at halftime, Hutchinson had runs of 20-6 and 9-1 to earn a 71-64 victory at Dodge City, improving the Blue Dragons' road record to 4-5.

Hutchinson, now 20-7, reached the 20-win plateau for the 14th consecutive season and for the 53rd time in program history. The Blue Dragons remain tied for third place with Pratt, which won at Garden City on Wednesday night. Dodge City falls to 9-18 overall, 1-17 in the Jayhawk West.

The Blue Dragons led Dodge City 32-29 at halftime. Dodge City, which trailed by 14 points in the first half, tied the game at 34-all on a Quindarus Thomas bucket with 17:25 to play in the second half.

That's where Hutchinson started its first key second-half run. After Dodge City missed a couple of point-blank tip-in opportunities,&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/singleton_saquan_s9fa">Saquan Singleton</a>&nbsp;scored in transition to give Hutch back the lead it wouldn't surrender again. The Blue Dragons responded to that challenge with a 9-1 run. When Singleton scored with 3:09 remaining, Hutchinson rebuilt a double-figure lead at 63-51. Dodge City got back within five twice in the final minute, but&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/bios/mitchell_d.j._eej6">D.J. Mitchell</a>&nbsp;and King were 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to clinch the victory.

The Blue Dragons shot right at 50 percent for the game (26 of 52, hitting 5 of 15 from 3-point range and 14 of 22 from the free-throw line. The Blue Dragons were out-rebounded 37-34.

Mason Senigaur had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Dodge City. Keldrick Hayes had 11 and Landyn Tyler finished with 10 points.

The Conquistadors shot 37.9 percent (22 of 58, going 4 of 17 from 3-point range and 16 of 22 from the free-throw line.

Miller has a .241 average with 88 homers and 293 RBIs in seven major league seasons that included time with Seattle, Tampa Bay and Milwaukee.

DODGE CITY – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped at the hands of a hot-shooting Dodge City team Wednesday night.

The Blue Dragons fell 69-55 to the Conquistadors at the Student Activities Center. Dodge City hadn't beaten Hutchinson since March 3, 2006 (27 games) and the Conquistadors snapped a 74-game losing streak to ranked opponents.

Hutchinson falls to 24-3 overall and slips back into a first-place tie with Seward County at 16-2 in the Jayhawk West. Seward County defeated Colby on a buzzer-beater Wednesday in Colby. Dodge City won its sixth game in the last seven and improves to 15-12 overall, 10-8 in the Jayhawk West.

The Blue Dragons wound up playing without its two leading scorers this season.&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/vannett_makayla_q30y">Makayla Vannett</a>&nbsp;wasn't available for the game because of injury and in the second minute Wednesday night, leading scorer&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/ogle_abby_pu1h">Abby Ogle</a>&nbsp;was lost for the game because of injury.

It took three quarters for the Blue Dragons to find their offensive footing again without Ogle and Vannett. By that time, Dodge City had opened a 47-28 lead after three quarters.

The Blue Dragons made just 7 of 32 field-goal attempts in the first three quarters, while Dodge City – the Conquistadors have averaged only 5.5 made 3-pointers per game this season – nailed 9 of 30 attempts from distance, the first six coming in a first half where the Conquistadors led 32-15.

Hutchinson outscored Dodge City 27-22 in the fourth quarter, making 10 of 18 field goals, including three 3-pointers.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/alford_tor-e_vqep">Tor'e Alford</a>&nbsp;scored a career-high 22 points against Dodge City, going 8 of 15 from the field with three 3-pointers.

Blue Dragons upset by Dodge City

WICHITA,
Kan. —&nbsp;The Wichita Sports Hall of Fame announced their 2020 inductees on Wednesday.

Former Wichita Heights and KU basketball star Perry Ellis and WSU National Champion baseball player, major league manager and current WSU coach Eric Wedge headline the class. 

The induction ceremony will be on Saturday, April 4th at 2 p.m. inside Hillside Christian Church in Wichita. The event is free. 

JOE AUER - Coach Auer has a 382-168 record while the head basketball coach at Heights H.S. and has won five Kansas state H.S.  basketball championships in 2009-10-11-12-15.  Also, as head baseball coach for 19 seasons at Heights, he won 11 Wichita City League championships with a record of 282-96.  

JODI BARTMAN - Jodi Bartman has had a storied bowling career.  She earned Wichita Bowler of the Year in both 1994 and 1998.  In 2010 she was awarded the prestigious Walt Delozier Abassador Award.  Inducted in Wichita Bowling HOF and Kansas Bowling HOF. 

TRISTEN DESHAZER - Tristen Deshazer was a prep wrestler at West H.S.  Tristen was a four-time state champion and posted a career record of 147-3. He was the 2006 Kansas High School Wrestler of the Year after winning the 130-pound state title in Class 5A.  Tristen is a 2011 graduate of Northern Illinois University, where he was a three-time team captain and set Huskies’ records for pins in a season (17) and career (33).

LYNN DUNCAN - Third-team All-American the Associated Press in 1969 at defensive tackle for the Shockers despite playing for four different head coaches and four different position coaches during his career.  He was named a MVC Player of the Week five times in his career, including his very first varsity game against Utah State when he had 10 unassisted tackles.  Inducted in the Shocker HOF.

PERRY ELLIS - Perry Ellis led Heights H.S. to four state titles, was named Kansas player of the year four times and recorded a cumulative 2,231 points and 984 rebounds during his prep career while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.  At Kansas University, Perry is the #9 top scorer in K.U. history with 1,798 points and 5.8 rebounds, leading K.U. to an impressive 115–29 record that included four Big XII championships and four trips to the NCAA basketball tournament.

BUFF FARROW - At Southeast H.S., Buff won two state titles and was ranked the number two junior tennis player in the country as a junior and the number eleven player in the country as a senior.  He won the U.S. Amateur Championships in 1986 and played tennis for UCLA. His collegiate career included making both the singles semi-finals and doubles final of the 1988 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.   Farrow competed in the men's doubles at the 1988 US Open.  Inducted in the Kansas Sports HOF, Wichita Southeast HOF and US Tennis Association Missouri Valley HOF. 

DR. KEN JANSSON - In the late 1970’s, Dr. Jansson was a four time NCAA All-American in track in the hammer and weight throw and Ivy League champion in the shot put, while at Dartmouth.  After founding St. Joseph’s Sports Medicine in 1992, Dr. Jansson has been the athletic doctor for W.S.U., Newman, Advantage World Team Tennis, Thunder, Wranglers, Wingnuts, Stealth, Aviators, Wild, Force, Wings and Collegiate H.S.  Inducted in Dartmouth Athletic HOF.

LAVERNE NANCE - For over forty years, Laverne Nance was a leading innovator and car owner in Kansas dirt track racing.  Inducted into the 81 Speedway HOF, Sprint Car HOF and High Banks HOF.

WESTON SCHARTZ - A Southeast H.S. graduate, Wichita West’s Coach Schartz is one of Kansas’ longest tenured football coaches for all classes.  He has the second most wins in Wichita City League history.  In his second stint at West, Coach Schartz is 118-95, and 195-131 overall, including Northwest H.S. and is in his 36th year of coaching as of this nomination.  Inducted in the Wichita Biddy Basketball HOF.

ERIC WEDGE - Eric Wedge was a catcher for Shocker baseball from 1987-89 and earned first team All-America honors in 1989.  He is the current head baseball coach for Wichita State.  In his three years as a Shocker, Wedge played in 226 games and hit .333 with 212 runs, 257 hits, 54 doubles, four triples, 45 home runs and 206 RBI. He was a member of the 1989 National Championship. Also, manager of the Cleveland Indians and Seattle Mariners.  Inducted in Kansas Sports HOF &amp; Shocker HOF.

DAVE PHILLIPS - “TENTH ANNUAL MAL ELLIOTT SPORTS MEDIA INDUCTEE”   In 1985,  Dave Phillips started Wichita’s first sports talk radio show, with Mike Kennedy, on KRZ and was on-air for 10 years.  Then, another three years with Steve Dennis on KZSN.  At KSN and KAKE TV stations, Dave was the sports anchor for 11 years.  Also, Dave was the General Manger of the Wichita Wings indoor soccer team from 1996 to 1998.

Wichita Sports Hall of Fame to enshrine 2020 class in April

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Kansas caught West Virginia in a rare late lapse at home.

Devon Dotson scored 11 of his 15 points after halftime, Isaiah Moss had seven of his 13 points during a second-half burst and the third-ranked Jayhawks finished the game with a 9-0 run to beat the 14th-ranked Mountaineers 58-49 on Wednesday night.

Kansas (21-3, 10-1 Big 12) won for the ninth straight time and remains a game behind first-place Baylor.

“This was not artistic at all,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “It was a grind-it-out, tough road win that you have sometimes when you’re going through your second round of conference (play). That was a really good road win for us.”

West Virginia (18-6, 6-5) fell flat in the end after leading by as many as nine points in each half and lost at home for the first time this season.

West Virginia has the Big 12′s best defense in terms of field-goal percentage, but it was Kansas that hunkered down on defense when it mattered. Kansas’ Marcus Garrett had four of his five steals over the final seven minutes.

“He just took guys with the game on the line and had three steals in a row on three consecutive possessions,” Self said. “He’s unbelievable defensively. I thought he controlled the game on that end.”

West Virginia is stumbling after rising as high as No. 12 in the AP Top 25 last month. It has lost two straight with another big test coming up Saturday at No. 1 Baylor.

Several turnovers and poor shot choices by West Virginia allowed Kansas to forge ahead for good. The Mountaineers scored just one point and failed to hit a field goal over the final six minutes.

In the key final minutes, Kansas “got the loose balls,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. “Every ball that got tipped in the air on a rebound, they got. They beat us to the ball.”

The Jayhawks had lost in five of their previous seven trips to Morgantown. Moss said the Jayhawks knew this one was going to be another tough test.

It took some time, but Moss and Kansas finally did.

Moss made four free throws and a 3-pointer in the span of 1:10 to put Kansas ahead 54-49 with 4:42 remaining. Dotson hit four free throws in the final 2 minutes to complete the scoring.

“We won the game, but I don’t know if we would have won unless Isaiah was in the game,” Self said. “He really helped us.”

West Virginia held a significant rebounding advantage and dominated the offensive glass in both of its meetings with Kansas. The Jayhawks made the most of a season-low 45 shot attempts Wednesday.

After the two previous games, Huggins criticized his young team, which includes a freshman and three sophomore starters, for lacking motivation, the proper attitude and attention to coaching instructions.

The Mountaineers came out strong in the first half Wednesday but were held to their lowest point production of the season. For the second time in three games they committed 19 turnovers and shot below 32% from the floor.

“I would hope that as they mature and get better and go through the grind, I would hope that they would respond and get tougher, be more active, guard better, pass better,” Huggins said.
