LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — When shots aren’t falling early, Kansas can always rely on defense and Doke.

Udoka Azubuike had 19 points and 16 rebounds, the Jayhawks shut down Oklahoma State long enough for their offense to come alive in the second half, and coach Bill Self’s team rolled to an 83-58 victory over Oklahoma State on Monday night to celebrate its return to the No. 1 ranking.

Devon Dotson added 11 points and Christian Braun and David McCormack had 10 apiece for the Jayhawks (25-3, 14-1, whose victory over No. 2 Baylor over the weekend allowed them to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/APTop25CollegeBasketballPoll">retake the top spot&nbsp;</a>in the AP poll. And the win over the Cowboys (14-14, 4-11) gave Kansas a half-game lead over Bears in the race for the Big 12 title.

“It was kind of rough at first, you know, starting to get going,” Agbaji said, “but the coaches, they did a good job of getting us pumped up for the game. We just had to come into this game with a lot more focus, because you have to finish out the rest of this conference season.”

Dotson and fellow backcourt mate Marcus Garrett were a combined 5 of 20 from the field, but Azubuike and the rest of the Jayhawks picked them up. They now now have won five straight against the Cowboys and 22 of the last 24 games played against them in Allen Fieldhouse as they burnish their credentials for the No. 1 overall NCAA Tournament seeding.

“Damn, they’re good,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton said. “They have a really good team.”

Cameron McGriff led the Cowboys with 16 points, though most came with the game well out of reach. Isaac Likekele and Lindy Waters added 11 apiece as Oklahoma State was held to 39% shooting from the field.

“We’re not a national championship contender. They are,” Boynton said. “And the reason they are is not only because they have (Azubuike) but because they have as dynamic a point guard there is in college basketball. And their ancillary pieces all contribute as well. We just played against a really good team.”

Early on, the Cowboys’ game plan was obvious: They were going to switch between man-to-man and zone defenses and continually collapse into the paint, trying their best to take away Azubuike’s vast array of rim-rattling dunks.

As a result, eight of the first 11 shots Kansas hoisted up came from beyond the 3-point line.

The plan worked for a bit, but the Jayhawks methodically pushed the lead toward double digits. It finally hit that mark when McCormack swatted Likekele’s layup attempt to create a run-out, and Dotson finished it by tossing up a lob that Agbaji hammered down to give Kansas a 27-17 lead with just under 6 minutes left in the first half.

Oklahoma State kept the deficit from growing into the early stages of the second half, in part because of the way it kept Dotson from getting to the bucket. The sprightly guard had just about every shot contested or blocked, and his frustration was visible when another shot was swatted just before the under-16 media timeout.

The Cowboys simply couldn’t find enough offense to capitalize.

The Jayhawks eventually embarked on a 16-2 run that included 11 straight points. Two came at the foul line when Dotson was whacked in the chin by McGriff’s elbow and Oklahoma State’s forward was given a technical foul, and the run ended when Dotson stripped Likekele and converted a three-point play at the other end to make it 51-30 with 14:17 to go.

The Jayhawks cruised the rest of the way, allowing Self to empty his bench in the closing minutes.

“After the game started, you know, we weren’t good early and we were ahead 12-10 because we made four 3s,” Self said. “After that we guarded them really well, holding them to 25 at half, and they made two 3s off silly mistakes. So I thought we did a good job defensively in the first half. The second half was pretty good.”

Oklahoma State finished the game on an 11-0 run to make the final score appear more respectable. But in reality the Cowboys were never in the game after the first few minutes of the second half, when the Jayhawks heated up on offense.

Kansas committed just 10 turnovers and shot 44% from the field, despite Dotson and Garrett struggling from the field. The duo compensated by piling up 11 assists, eight rebounds and making plenty of plays on defense.

Oklahoma State begins a final homestand against Iowa State on Saturday.

🏀 GAME PREVIEW: vs. Oklahoma State

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The adjustments to a major offseason overhaul at Team Penske continued Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where miscommunication between Joey Logano and his new crew chief led to a botched final pit stop.

Logano still wound up in victory lane for the second year in a row, winning a two-lap sprint to the finish that ended under caution.

A caution with six laps remaining forced teams to make strategic decisions and crew chief Paul Wolfe told Logano to come to pit road for new tires. Logano didn’t hear Wolfe and remained on track, a move that cycled him into the lead but put him in position to hold off a slew of contenders on fresh tires.

Logano knew it was critical to get his Ford separated from the pack quickly on the restart to have any shot at the win.

“Clean air was going to be key with old tires,” he said. “If I got swallowed up by a couple cars, I was just going to fall backwards really quick.”

Logano got a push from Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on the restart with two laps remaining, then threw a block on William Byron to maintain his position out front that Logano called “the winning move.

“I was able to get down in front of him and then be able to separate myself a little bit from the field,” he said.

Logano, the 2018 champion, just missed advancing to the championship race last season. At the start of this year, owner Roger Penske announced he’d swapped the crews of Logano, Ryan Blaney and Brad Keselowski, with Logano getting Wolfe, the crew chief who led Keselowski to a Cup title.

They’ve worked together at the track the last three weeks and Logano praised the new pairing.

“He’s done such a great job, and it’s been fun getting to know each other, and the whole team,” Logano said. “The pit crew was amazing today. I think we gained a spot every time at least. Proud of the effort that everyone has put in over the offseason.”

Logano had taken the white flag when a crash occurred deep in traffic to bring out the caution, freeze the field and secure the victory for the No. 22 Ford.

The 24th victory of Logano’s career broke a tie with Ricky Rudd for 35th on NASCAR’s all-time win list.

Matt DiBenedetto in a Ford for the Wood Brothers — a Penske partner — for his second race was 0.491 seconds behind to tie his career-best finish.

“This is all just too surreal,” he said. “Tough to be that close, but, hey, this is only the second race of the season. So it was the strength of this team. It’s so cool to have the backing of all the people that allow me to drive this thing.”

Stenhouse, pole-sitter for the Daytona 500 a week ago, was third in a Chevrolet in his second race for new team JTG-Daugherty Racing.

“So far so good,” Stenhouse said. “Two weeks, we’ve been fast this week, we weren’t bad this week, and we know what we need to work on.”

Austin Dillon was fourth for Richard Childress Racing and followed by Jimmie Johnson, Bubba Wallace, Logano teammate Keselowski and Kevin Harvick.

Kyle Larson and Ty Dillon rounded out the top 10.

Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin was the highest-finishing Toyota driver in 17th as the brand and Joe Gibbs Racing struggled the entire 400 miles.

Ross Chastain drove the No. 6 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing as the replacement driver for Ryan Newman, who suffered a head injury in a crash on the final lap of Monday night’s Daytona 500. It ended a streak of 649 consecutive starts dating to 2002 for Newman, who has no timetable for a return but his team said Sunday that he intends to get back in his car.

Chastain finished 29th, in part because of a late spin, but ran inside the top-10 earlier in the race. Roush Fenway has not indicated who will drive the car next week.

Chastain was bitterly disappointed as he headed to his Xfinity Series car for the resumption of Saturday’s race, which was rained out after 50 laps and rescheduled for after the main event.

“I was just overdriving there at the end for sure. It just got away from me there and got loose,” Chastain said. “The car deserved a lot better finish. I just didn’t have great restarts. These guys kind of ate me alive on the restarts and I’d lose three or four spots every time, and picked the wrong lines through one and two, and then three and four again I just kept making silly mistakes that I should learn from after I make the mistake once. I just have to be better.”

Chase Elliott appeared to be the driver to beat through the first two stages, both wins for Elliott in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

But his shot to win the race ended after a tire issue following a pit stop from the lead caused Elliott to hit the wall. He had led five different times for 70 laps, with the two stage victories, before heading to pit road for repairs.

An emotional week for Ryan Blaney ended with an 11th place finish at Las Vegas and Blaney moving toward closure after Ryan Newman’s crash on the final lap of Monday night’s Daytona 500.

It was contact from Blaney that triggered Newman’s crash, and Blaney said Sunday morning before the race he struggled in the first few days over his role in the accident.

“I talked to his dad on Tuesday and said when he’s feeling better, I’d like to talk to Ryan,” Blaney told The Associated Press. “Ryan called me Wednesday and just talking to him, hearing him, really made things easier.”

Blaney said he’d never before been involved in such a violent crash and the potential of Newman being hurt rattled him.

“You never want to see something like that, especially coming off your own nose,” Blaney told AP.

Blaney thought he had a shot to win the race until he was one of the drivers to pit on the final stop and he failed to make up the difference with his fresh tires.

Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, where Kyle Busch won last season. It is not determined if Ryan Newman will be back in his car next week, or if the team will use a replacement driver again.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team will meet the Allen Red Devils in the opening round of the 2020 Region VI Men's Basketball Tournament this Wednesday, February 26.

The game will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons will be the eighth-overall seed for the Region VI Tournament after finishing in a third-place tie in the Jayhawk West with a 13-8 league record. This is the lowest seed the Blue Dragons have had in the regional tournament since the 2009 season.

Allen (16-14) is the No. 9 overall seed in the tournament after a fifth-place finish in the Jayhawk East.

The No. 12-ranked Blue Dragons won their first conference title since 2017 and 10th overall after a 78-62 win over No. 18 Seward County in the season finale on Saturday night at the Sports Arena.

Jayhawk East champion Butler (22-8) also receives an opening-round bye. The Grizzlies are the tournament's No. 1 overall seed despite five few wins than the Blue Dragons. The No. 1 overall seed flips back and forth each season and this was the East's turn to have the tournament's top seed.

The Blue Dragons will await the winner of the Dodge City-Cowley matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Arkansas City.

Dodge City and Cowley gave the Blue Dragons their only conference losses this season.

The other half of the lower bracket features 14th-seed Garden City (11-19) at No. 3-seed Coffeyville (24-6) and No. 11-seed Cloud County (9-21) at No. 6 Barton (15-15).

Dragon Women No. 2 overall seed for Region VI Tournament

CINCINNATI (AP) — The ball left Jamarius Burton’s hands at mid-court, and everyone in a Cincinnati uniform had a familiar, bad feeling.

If the ball found the net, the Bearcats would be going overtime yet again.

Not this time. The shot had too much on it, and Cincinnati ended its NCAA record-tying streak of overtime games Sunday,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/GoBearcatsMBB/status/1231681622115667968" target="_blank">holding on for a 67-64 victory</a>&nbsp;over Wichita State.

As it has for the last few weeks, it came down to the final shot.

“Your heart drops a little bit, once that ball leaves (Burton’s hands,” said Jarron Cumberland, who had 24 points. “But we’ve got it.”

The Bearcats (18-9, 11-4 American Athletic) had gone overtime each of their last four games, matching the NCAA record. With only seconds left, it seemed that a fifth one could be at hand.

“I mean, it crosses your mind,” Cumberland said.

The Shockers (20-7, 8-6) couldn’t extend the game, done in by their cold shooting in the closing minutes.

Neither team led by more than five in a ragged first half that featured four ties and nine lead changes. Wichita State missed its last six shots in the half, helping Cincinnati put together an eight-point run for a 31-28 halftime lead.

“We made it about defense this week,” coach John Brannen said. “We felt we needed to play better. We just haven’t been playing well, and it started with our investment, our physical and emotional investment.

“I felt for 25 minutes, it was as good as it’s been in a month.”

The Shockers’ cold shooting extended into the second half. They missed six of their first seven shots while Cincinnati pulled ahead 38-30.

Erik Stevenson scored six straight points for the Shockers, including a steal and layup, and Echenique had a three-point play that tied it 58-58 with 4:32 to go, but the Shockers went cold again at the end and never regained the lead.

After pulling even, Wichita State missed eight of its last nine shots from the field, allowing Cincinnati to hold on.

Wichita State: The Shockers lost three straight — a season high — in early February, including a home loss to Cincinnati and road losses at Tulsa and Houston. They’ve since refurbished their NCAA Tournament credentials but have a tough closing stretch.

The Bearcats’ 80 points in their win at Wichita State were the most allowed by the Shockers this season. Their 67 points Sunday were the most Wichita State had allowed in the last four games.

The Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team goes into the postseason winning 5 of its final 6 games after Saturday's night's 67-47 Jayhawk West victory over Seward County at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons rallied from a one-point halftime deficit and used one of their top defensive efforts of the season to do.

Hutchinson held Seward County to just 31.3 percent shooting and forced 17 turnovers. The 47 points scored by Seward County tied a series-low output against Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons also limited Seward County to 47 points on Feb. 13, 1982.

The Blue Dragons close the regular season with a 22-8 record. Going 13-8 in conference play, the Dragons tied Pratt for third place in the Jayhawk West, but will have the fourth seed out of the West because Pratt won the tiebreaker with Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons will play host to the opening round of the Region VI Tournament at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons suffered through a scoreless drought of 4 minutes, 45 seconds and trailed 16-11 after a McCrary basket with 8:58 to play. Seward County put together a 14-2 run and built its largest lead of 21-13 after a Roy Clarke 3-pointer with 5:41 remaining in the first half.

The Blue Dragons then went on a run of nine unanswered points over the next 4 minutes and took a 22-21 lead on a King 3-pointer with 3:44 remaining in the half. McCrary countered to give the Saints a 23-22 lead with 3:18 remaining.

Those were the final points scored by either team in the half. The Dragons closed the half with seven-straight turnovers, while Seward was 0 of 7 with two turnovers to close the half.

Surging Blue Dragons defeat Seward in regular-season finale

Three games ago, thoughts of a Jayhawk Conference Western Division championship were shaky at best for the Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team.

Injuries to its top two scorers and an upset loss to Dodge City on February 22 put plenty of doubt in the minds of the Blue Dragons. But resiliency has been a trademark of the 2019-20 Blue Dragons, and it showed again Saturday night in a winner-take-all battle for the conference title with Seward County.

The Blue Dragons continued their torrid shooting from long range and shut out Seward County from behind the arc for better than three quarters as No. 12 Hutchinson defeated the No. 18 Saints 78-62 at the Sports Arena.

The 27-3 Blue Dragons win their first Jayhawk West crown since 2017 and 10th conference title overall, the sixth under head coach John Ontjes. Hutchinson went 19-2 in conference play. The Blue Dragons earn an opening-round bye for the Region VI Tournament, which begins Wednesday. The Blue Dragons will begin play in the tournament quarterfinals next Saturday with opponents and times to be released for the tournament on Sunday. Seward County falls to 23-6 and 18-3.

For the second-straight game, the Blue Dragons dominated the opening quarter with the Saints and opening a 19-10 lead after 10 minutes. In Hutchins's 72-70 win over the Saints on Feb. 1 in Liberal, the Dragons led 20-5 after one quarter only to have the Saints outscore Hutch the rest of the way.&nbsp;<a href="http://bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2019-20/bios/ogle_abby_pu1h">Abby Ogle</a>&nbsp;hit a game-winning shot with 2.7 seconds to play.

Alford finished with a game-high 19 points, hitting 5 of 11 from 3-point range. She had four more 3-pointers in the second half. Over her last two games, Alford has hit 12 of 18 from distance. Alford added five rebounds. The 24-3 Jayhawks have won 12 in a row since their first-ever home loss to Baylor on Jan. 11. They had a 10-point lead with 6 1/2 minutes left before Baylor cut it to one in the final seconds. Jared Butler led the 24-2 Bears with 19 points but missed a potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Courtney Ramey scored a career-high 26 points, Texas caused havoc for Kansas State on the defensive end, and the Longhorns cruised to a 70-59 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday. Donovan Williams added 12 points and Matt Coleman III returned from the first missed game of his college career to also score 12, keeping the Longhorns firmly on the NCAA Tournament bubble as March draws near. Xavier Sneed had 15 points and Makol Mawien 14 for the Wildcats, who have lost seven straight for the first time since 2001.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jack Flaherty is getting the ball on opening day for the St. Louis Cardinals. St. Louis manager Mike Shildt says the 24-year-old Flaherty will start the season opener March 26 at Cincinnati. It will be the right-hander's first opening day start and comes after he finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting with a closing surge last season. Flaherty pitched the home opener for the Cardinals last year. Shildt gave Flaherty the news on Friday, not a surprise after Flaherty went 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA last season. Seven of those wins came after the All-Star break, when he posted a 0.91 ERA.&nbsp;

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Isaiah Joe returned from a five-game absence to lead Arkansas in scoring with 21 points and a 78-68 victory over Missouri, snapping a five-game losing streak for the Razorbacks. Missouri, which outrebounded Arkansas 36-23, was led by Kobe Brown, Xavier Pinson and Dru Smith, each scoring in double figures for the Tigers, led by Brown's 17. The trio shot just 3-for-16 on 3-pointers.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jahmi'us Ramsey scored a game-high 25 points, Kyler Edwards added 19 points and Texas Tech routed Iowa State 87-57 Saturday night. The Red Raiders drained 15 of their first 19 shots and led by double digits the final 24:30 of the game. Solomon Young had 16 points for the Cyclones, who lost to Texas Tech for the second straight time at home.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Monika Czinano scored 23 points, Kathleen Doyle added 18 with seven assists and five rebounds and No. 19 Iowa rolled to a 100-57 win over Penn State. The Hawkeyes enter the final weekend of the regular season a game behind No. 7 Maryland and No. 18 Northwestern. Iowa, which reached 100 points for the fourth time this season and surpassed 90 for the third consecutive game, took care of the Nittany Lions, who have lost 12 straight, quickly, en route to its 35th straight win at home. Kamaria McDaniel scored 22 points for Penn State.

MACOMB, Ill. (AP) — Marlon Ruffin had a season-high 30 points to lift Omaha to a 93-86 win over Western Illinois, its third win in a week. Ruffin was out-dueled by the Leathernecks' Kobe Webster, who had 40 points, a career-high and a Western Illinois single-game record as a Division I team.

DALLAS (AP) — David Perron scored his team-leading 24th goal and the St. Louis Blues chased Dallas goalie Ben Bishop early while extending their Western Conference lead with a dominant 5-1 victory over the Stars. Jake Allen stopped 18 shots in the Blues' third straight win since a 0-3-2 stretch that included an overtime loss at home to the Stars. Colton Parayko had a goal and two assists to help the Blues stop the Stars from pulling even in the West for the third time this week. St. Louis is four points ahead of Dallas with 20 games to go. The Stars have 21 games remaining.&nbsp;

WACO, Texas&nbsp;– Behind senior center Udoka Azubuike’s 23 points and career-high 19 rebounds, the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks topped No. 1 Baylor, 64-61, Saturday afternoon inside the Ferrell Center. The win snapped the Bears’ 23-game winning streak and pulled the two teams into a tie atop the Big 12 standings with four games remaining in league play.

The victory, KU’s 12th-straight, moved the Jayhawks to 24-3 and 13-1 in Big 12. Baylor fell to 24-1 in 2019-20 and to 13-1 in the league.

MOMENT OF THE GAMEAfter Baylor cut the KU lead to just three points, 56-53, with four minutes to play in regulation, two Jayhawk veterans stepped up and made plays that put just enough distance between themselves and the Bears. Marcus Garrett connected on two free throws before Udoka Azubuike netted a putback one minute later for his 11th&nbsp;and final field goal of the day to put his team up by seven points with just over two minutes remaining. From there, KU used more clutch free throw shooting, getting a pair each from Devon Dotson and Isaiah Moss in the final 34 seconds to stave off a late Baylor charge and seal the program’s first road win over an AP No. 1 team in over 60 years.
