FORT MYERS ,Fla. –&nbsp;Despite having four players in double-digits, No. 6 Kansas dropped its season-opener to No. 1 Gonzaga, 90-102, in the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off in the Suncoast Credit Union Arena on Thursday.

The Jayhawks were led by three scorers in double-figures, including a team-high 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting from senior Marcus Garrett. Garrett was joined in double figures by junior Ochai Agbaji (17 pts.), sophomore Jalon Wilson (11 pts.) and Bryce Thompson (12 pts.), while the team shot 53% (33-of-62) from the floor.

After what was a high-scoring first half, which saw Gonzaga outscore KU, 54-46, the Jayhawks bounced back in the second half by outscoring the Bulldogs 8-2 out of the break to even the game for the first time since the opening minutes. The teams battled back-and-forth in the second half before Gonzaga gained the advantage and pulled away.

With the victory, Gonzaga head coach Mark Few reaches 600 career victories, marking him 600-124 in his 22 seasons of coaching. The Bulldogs were led by a combined 48 points from sophomore Drew Timme and senior Corey Kispert.

100 –&nbsp;Gonzaga scored 102 points against the Jayhawks on Thursday, marking the first time since November 11, 2016 vs. Indiana that a team scored 100+ points against KU. The Jayhawks fell in that game, 99-103.

Gonzaga’s 102 points marks the first time since February 27, 1990 that the Jayhawks have allowed 100+ points in regulation. The last time that happened was against No. 5 Oklahoma, in which Oklahoma won, 78-100.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jim Hanifan, the former St. Louis Cardinals coach who returned to the city as offensive line coach to help the Rams win the Super Bowl, has died. He was 87. Hanifan's daughter, Kathy Hinder, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he died Tuesday at Missouri Baptist Hospital. She said the cause of death hasn't been determined, but said it wasn't related to COVID-19. The Cardinals' head coach from 1980-85, Hanifan is best known for his offensive lines as an assistant with St. Louis and Washington. Hanifan went 39–49–1 with the Cardinals, reaching the playoffs in 1982. He won Super Bowls as an assistant with Washington after the 1991 season and the Rams after the 1999 season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be getting Sammy Watkins back on the field just in time. The Chiefs put fellow wide receiver Byron Pringle on injured reserve after he hurt his ankle last weekend in Las Vegas, leaving them with only Tyreek Hill, Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman as the healthy players in the corps. Watkins has been out since Week 5 with a hamstring injury, though his teammates said he looked good in practice Wednesday. That raises hope that Watkins will be on the field when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Luka Garza had 26 points and 10 rebounds and No. 5 Iowa opened the season with a 97-67 victory over North Carolina Central on Wednesday. Garza, the Big Ten player of the year last season and the lone unanimous selection on the preseason AP All-America team, had his 17th consecutive game of 20 points or more. The senior center had just four points in the first 10 1/2 minutes before the Hawkeyes took control with a 20-2 run near the end of the first half. He had six of Iowa's final nine points in the run. Redshirt freshman forward Patrick McCaffery, the son of Iowa coach Fran McCaffery, had 16 points. CJ Keyser led North Carolina Central with 15 points.

ESTERO, Fla. (AP) — Terry Taylor had 21 points and 12 rebounds as Austin Peay beat Nebraska Omaha 72-66 at the Gulf Coast Showcase. Jordyn Adams had 18 points for Austin Peay (1-0). Marlon Ruffin had 20 points for the Mavericks (0-1).&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — The Thanksgiving menu of in-state rivalry games is a little lighter this year around the Southeastern Conference. Sure, top-ranked Alabama and No. 22 Auburn will duke it out in the Iron Bowl, while Mississippi State and Mississippi resume the Battle for the Golden Egg in Oxford. Those offerings will have to do this Saturday with four other turf wars against Atlantic Coast Conference rivals put on pause by the SEC's league-only schedule because of the coronavirus pandemic. Georgia-Georgia Tech, Florida-Florida State, South Carolina-Clemson and Kentucky-Louisville rivalry games have been scrubbed this year due to the scheduling.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Mark Smith scored 18 points, Xavier Pinson added 17 and Dru Smith 16 as Missouri cruised past Oral Roberts in a season opener 91-64. Mark Smith and Dru Smith, who are not related and are among three Smiths on the team, shot a combined 12-of-19 for the Tigers. Mark Smith led the way with four 3-pointers. Javon Pickett tossed in 11 points, converting 5-of-5 from the foul line. Jeremiah Tilmon added eight points and 12 rebounds. Max Abmas and Kevin Obanor combined to score 35 points for the Golden Eagles, Abmas with 18 and Obanor 17.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Garrett Sturtz scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Drake to an 80-70 victory over Kansas State in a basketball season opener. Sturtz made all three of his field-goal attempts and 9 of 10 free throws, including four in the final 1:19 when the Bulldogs made 10 straight from the line to pull away. Tremell Murphy scored 12 points with seven rebounds and Shanquan Hemphill added 10 points, including a dunk to put Drake ahead for good with 7:24 remaining. Wildcats senior Mike McGuirl scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting and DaJuan Gordon, a sophomore, tied his personal best with 15 points.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Four Cornhuskers scored 14 points each and six finished in double figures as a cast of newcomers led Nebraska to a 102-55 victory over McNeese State. Transfers Webster, Teddy Allen, Trey McGowens, Lat Mayen, Dalano Banton and Shamiel Stevenson reached double figures in their Huskers debut. Nebraska shot 50%, scored 43 points off 27 McNeese turnovers and outscored the Cowboys 50-26 in the paint. The 102 points were the most scored under second-year coach Fred Hoiberg. Dru Kuxhausen, a native of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, who led the NCAA is 3-pointers made last season with 125, led the Cowboys with 11 points.&nbsp;

Ravens-Steelers game moved from Thanksgiving night to Sunday

UNDATED (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens were supposed to provide the only decent matchup on the NFL's Thanksgiving Day schedule. 

That game has been pushed back to Sunday due to coronavirus issues with Baltimore. NBC will still air the big AFC North showdown.

Baltimore placed outside linebacker Pernell McPhee on the reserve/COVID-19 list, joining running backs Mark Ingram and J.K. Dobbins and defensive tackle Brandon Williams. The Ravens also have been doing team work virtually.

— The Browns are practicing in shifts and holding players out as a precaution while dealing with a new round of COVID-19 issues. The team temporarily closed its headquarters in Berea, Ohio, after another player tested positive. Coach Kevin Stefanksi said practice ahead of Sunday's game at Jacksonville will be spaced out to reduce the risk of possible spread. Star defensive end Myles Garrett is among four players on the reserve/COVID list.

— The Jaguars will be without three defensive coaches against Cleveland this weekend because of COVID-19 testing and contact tracing. Coach Doug Marrone says defensive coordinator Todd Wash, defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich and defensive assistant Dwayne Stukes will not be available.

— The Bengals have added receiver Auden Tate and offensive lineman B.J. Finney to the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Also Wednesday, the team returned cornerback Winston Rose to the practice squad from the COVID-19 list.

— The Falcons have activated defensive end Dante Fowler from the COVID-19 list. Fowler was placed on the list Nov. 14 during the team's bye week and didn't play last Sunday in a loss to the New Orleans Saints. Receiver Laquon Treadwell is now the only Atlanta player on the COVID-19 list.

— Dolphins defensive lineman Christian Wilkins practiced Wednesday after being activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list. Wilkins missed the past two games after playing more than half of the team's defensive snaps in the first eight games.

UNDATED (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars are going with quarterback Mike Glennon against Cleveland, giving the NFL journeyman his first start in more than three years.

Coach Doug Marrone made the announcement Wednesday, three days after he considered benching rookie Jake Luton during a 27-3 loss to unbeaten Pittsburgh. Luton completed 16 of 37 passes for 151 yards and four interceptions against the Steelers.

— The Bengals could be without lead back Giovani Bernard for Sunday's game against the Giants. The team said Bernard was held out of practice with a concussion Wednesday.

— Sam Darnold could be getting closer to returning to the huddle. The Jets quarterback was limited in practice Wednesday but there's optimism Darnold's injured right shoulder might be healed in time to play against the Dolphins on Sunday at home. 

— Colts quarterback Philip Rivers is dealing with a sore toe, but it's not expected to end his streak of consecutive starts at 234. He's taking Wednesday and Thursday off from practice so he'll be ready to make start No. 235 in Sunday's crucial AFC South showdown against Tennessee. 

— Former Cardinals head coach and offensive line coach Jim Hanifan has died at 87. Hanifan went 39–49–1 with the Cardinals from 1980-85, reaching the playoffs in 1982. He won Super Bowls as an assistant with the 1991 Redskins and 1999 Rams. 

— Cowboys strength coach Markus Paul has died at 54, a day after being taken to the hospital following a medical emergency at the team's facility. Paul was in his third season with the Cowboys after serving as a strength and conditioning coach for four other NFL teams. The team said the cause of death was pending.

Saban tests positive for virus, will miss Iron Bowl

UNDATED (AP) — Saturday's Iron Bowl will be without its biggest star. Alabama coach Nick Saban has tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Crimson Tide's game with No. 22 Auburn.

Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will oversee preparations within the football building and lead the team on game day.

Team physician Dr. Jimmy Robinson and head trainer Jeff Allen said in a joint statement that the positive test came Wednesday.

Saban said he has had a runny nose, but no major symptoms. When he tested positive last month before a game with Georgia, he didn't have any symptoms. Saban ended up being cleared to coach in that game after subsequent tests leading up to the game came back negative.

In other virus-related college football news:

— No. 7 Cincinnati's game at Temple this weekend has been canceled as both teams deal with COVID-19 issues. The American Athletic Conference said the game scheduled for Saturday could not be made up on Dec. 5 because the league's protocols "would not allow for a sufficient number of players to be available for competition on that day." The unbeaten and conference-leading Bearcats' next game is scheduled for Dec. 12 at No. 24 Tulsa.

— It appears the Big Game between Cal and Stanford was going to go on as planned Friday. The rivalry game between Oregon and Oregon State, formerly known as the Civil War, was also still set for Friday.

— The Apple Cup between Washington and Washington State has been canceled. The Huskies scrambled to schedule a game with Utah for Saturday night, made possible because the Utes' Sunday meeting against Arizona State was also canceled.

Transfers lead No. 4 UVa to rout of Towson in Bubbleville

UNDATED (AP) — The men's college basketball schedule is in full swing despite the coronavirus pandemic, although a few season openers were either postponed or canceled.

Fourth-ranked Virginia opened with an 89-54 rout of Towson behind Trey Murphy III's 21 points. Murphy was in action a day after learning he was cleared to play for the Cavaliers.

Fellow transfer Sam Hauser added 19 points and Jay Huff added 14 points for the Cavs, who never trailed and led by 23 at halftime.

— No. 3 Villanova overcame a nine-point, second-half deficit to beat Boston College 76-67. Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats, while Collin Gillespie added 15 points.

— Luka Garza had 26 points and 10 rebounds in fifth-ranked Iowa's 97-67 romp over North Carolina Central. The senior center had just four points in the first 10 1/2 minutes before the Hawkeyes took control with a 20-2 run near the end of the first half.

— Ayo Dosunmu (EYE'-oh dah-SOO'-moo) scored a career-high 28 points and freshman Adam Miller also scored 28 as eighth-ranked Illinois ripped North Carolina A&amp;T, 122-60. Dosunmu had 10 rebounds for his second career double-double, and Miller was 6 of 8 from 3-point range as Illinois fell five points short of its record scoring total. 

— No. 10 Kentucky cruised to an 81-45 win over Morehead State as Brandon Boston Jr. furnished 15 points and seven rebounds. Devin Askew and Terrence Clarke each added 12 points for the Wildcats, whose roster features 10 new faces and seven highly-regarded freshmen.

— Foster Loyer set career highs with six 3-pointers and 20 points to lead 13th-rated Michigan State in an 83-67 win over Eastern Michigan. Transfer Joey Hauser had 15 points and nine rebounds in his debut with the Spartans.

— Matt McClung finished with 20 points in his debut to lead No. 14 Texas Tech in a 101-58 laugher against Northwestern State. Fellow transfer Marcus Santos-Silva had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Red Raiders, who had runs of 17-5 and 15-4 in the first half. 

— Miles McBride scored a career-high 23 points as No. 15 West Virginia held off South Dakota State, 79-71. Sean McNeil added a career-high 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field.

— Freshman guard Caleb Love delivered 17 points and No. 16 North Carolina went on a 17-0 spurt in the second half to beat College of Charleston 79-60. — Marcus Sasser scored 25 points and Tramon Mark added 22 with eight rebounds for 17th-ranked Houston in an 89-45 pounding of Lamar. Sasser shot 9 of 11, including 7 of 9 on 3-pointers. 

— Remy Martin poured in 26 points and freshman Marcus Bagley made three key free throws in the final minute to lead No. 18 Arizona State to a 94-88 win versus Rhode Island. Bagley added 16 points while Taeshon Cherry, Josh Christopher and Holland Woods added 11 apiece in a game that featured 81 combined free throws, 55 fouls and two technicals.

— No. 19 Texas stormed past Texas-Rio Grande Valley, 91-55 as Courtney Ramey had 20 points and six assists. Matt Coleman chipped in 17 points and Ramey was 7 of 11 from the field, helping the Longhorns shoot 57% for the game. 

— Matt Mitchell and Jordan Schakel dropped in 15 points apiece and San Diego State used its disruptive defense to beat No. 22 UCLA, 73-58. Mitchell and Schakel hit 3-point shots early in the second half to open a 40-28 lead.

— Justice Sueing contributed 19 points and No. 23 Ohio State opened on a 22-0 run before completing a 94-67 dismantling of Illinois State. E.J. Liddell had 16 points, while Duane Washington and Zed Key each scored 12 for the Buckeyes.

UNDATED (AP) — New York Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk has decided to retire as a result of an eye injury sustained last season.

The 36-year-old Boychuk required stitches and plastic surgery after being cut across his right eyelid by the skate of Montreal Canadiens forward Artturi Lehkonen on March 3. It was the second injury to the same eye in Boychuk's career.

Boychuk returned for the playoffs in August before sustaining a head injury in the preliminary round series opener against Florida. 

— The Stanley Cup champion Lightning have re-signed defenseman Mikhail Sergachev to a three-year, contract worth about $4.8 million per season. The 22-year-old skated in 70 games last season, scoring a career-high 10 goals and finishing with 34 points. 

Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona dies at 60

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentine soccer great Diego Maradona has died at 60.

Maradona's spokesman said he died Wednesday of a heart attack, two weeks after being released from a hospital in Buenos Aires following brain surgery.

The office of Argentina's president said it will decree three days of national mourning.

Maradona was among the best players in history and led his country to the 1986 World Cup title before later struggling with cocaine use and obesity.

One of the most famous moments in the history of the sport, the "Hand of God" goal, came when the diminutive Maradona punched the ball into England's net during the 1986 World Cup quarterfinals.

Nebraska tries to end a five-game losing streak against rival Iowa on Friday.

Iowa State tight end Chase Allen doesn't see it that way. Allen told reporters he's having a blast this year. The 15th-ranked Cyclones are in first place in the Big 12. They play at No. 20 Texas on Friday with a chance to lock up a spot in the conference championship game for the first time.

Fans and announcers alike are having fun trying to decipher Carr's secret codes and intention as he hollers out such audibles as "Tiger Woods!" or "James Harden!" The Raiders haven't allowed any fans into their new stadium in Las Vegas because of CODID-19 and other teams have allowed just a few hundred or a few thousand fans into their games. So, the crowds aren't drowning out the banter on the field like usual.&nbsp;

Playoff rankings: Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson, Ohio State

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama is No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season, followed by Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State. Texas A&amp;M was fifth and Florida was sixth, followed by unbeaten Cincinnati at seventh, the best ranking for a non-Power Five team in the seven-year history of the selection committee's rankings. 

Another unbeaten team from outside the Power Five was not so highly regarded by the committee. BYU was slotted 14th, behind No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 13 Iowa State among others.

Burkhead will miss the rest of the season

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Patriots running back Rex Burkhead says his recent knee injury will keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. In an Instagram post Tuesday, Burkhead wrote that he looks forward to "coming back better than ever in 2021." 

The proclamation comes after he was carted off the field in the third quarter of New England's 27-20 loss at Houston following a knee-to-helmet collision with Texans cornerback Bradley Roby. His injury is the latest blow to a Patriots running back group that has already had to make several adjustments.

— The Browns are down another defensive star. Starting cornerback Denzel Ward, who leads the NFL in passes defensed and is coming off his best game this season, will miss time with a strained calf he sustained in Sunday's win over Philadelphia. Ward's injury is just the latest to a big-name player for the Browns, who are already missing dynamic end Myles Garrett. He'll miss his second straight game this week at Jacksonville as he recovers from COVID-19. 

—Injured San Francisco 49ers cornerback K'Waun Williams has been suspended two games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Williams was already sidelined by a high ankle sprain but now will officially be suspended the next two weeks. He is eligible to return after the Week 13 game against Buffalo. 

—The Dallas Cowboys canceled practice Tuesday after a non-coronavirus medical emergency involving their strength and conditioning coordinator. The Cowboys said Markus Paul experienced a medical emergency at the facility, where he was immediately treated by Cowboys medical personnel before being transported to a hospital. 

UNDATED (AP) — Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson, Jared Allen and Calvin Johnson are first-year eligible players to make the list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's class of 2021. 

Joining them are four players who previously have been eligible, but never made the semifinals: Eric Allen, Willie Anderson, Cornelius Bennett and Rodney Harrison. 

A player must be retired for five seasons before being considered for entry to the Canton, Ohio, shrine. The selection committee will meet during Super Bowl week to select the entrants.

Ingram signs five-year deal with Pelicans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says restricted free agent Brandon Ingram has agreed to a five-year, $158 million contract with the New Orleans Pelicans. Ingram is the NBA's reigning most improved player after averaging a team-high 23.8 points in his first season with the Pelicans.

— Veteran 7-foot center Steven Adams has agreed to a two-year extension with the Pelicans following his trade to New Orleans as part of a four-team deal that also sent guard Jrue Holiday from the Pelicans to Milwaukee. A person familiar with the deal says Adams' extension is worth $35 million. The Pelicans' acquisition of Adams follows center Derrick Favors' decision to leave New Orleans for Utah in free agency. The deal also sends Milwaukee's 2025 and 2027 first-round picks to New Orleans.

— Free agent guard Brad Wanamaker has signed with the Golden State Warriors. He will give the team additional depth in the backcourt in the wake of Klay Thompson's Achilles injury that will sideline him all season. The Warriors announced the deal two days after acquiring guard Kelly Oubre from the Oklahoma City Thunder in a trade for draft picks. Thompson will miss the season after tearing his right Achilles tendon during a pickup game.

— The Miami Heat front office says it's working on a contract extension with Bam Adebayo. When finalized, the deal will likely guarantee him at least $168 million over the next six seasons and perhaps as much as $200 million in that span. Adebayo will make $5.1 million this season, the final year of his rookie contract. 

— The Los Angeles Lakers have signed veteran Spanish center Marc Gasol. The NBA champions confirmed the latest step in their roster reconfiguration by formally adding the 35-year-old Gasol. He spent the last 1 1/2 seasons with the Toronto Raptors and won a championship ring in 2019. Gasol will suit up for the Lakers nearly 13 years after the franchise acquired his older brother, Pau, by trading Marc's draft rights to the Memphis Grizzlies.

— The Utah Jazz will play homes games before a limited number of fans when the NBA season begins. The team said Vivint Arena will reopen with a reduced seating capacity of 1,500 in the lower bowl only and limited seating on the suite level. The arena has a capacity of 18,306. Several safety measures are being put into place, including requiring face coverings, mobile entry, and screening procedures at all entrances.

UNDATED. (AP) — No. 12 Tennessee has extended its pause of team activities through Dec. 4 after receiving the results of COVID-19 testing.

The Vols paused activities Monday and ran more tests after announcing coach Rick Barnes, 66, had tested positive. Tennessee later canceled its Volunteer Classic that had been scheduled to start Wednesday.

Now Tennessee has extended its pause on activities, and the Vols will not play No. 1 Gonzaga in Indianapolis next week as part of the Jimmy V Classic. School officials also announced Tennessee will not play at Notre Dame on Dec. 4. That was a game that had not been announced with the contract not finalized yet.

In other virus-related developments in college basketball:

— No. 2 Baylor has pushed back the start of its men's basketball season even further with the cancellation of Sunday's game at Seton Hall. Baylor said Tuesday that it was a mutual agreement between the schools to cancel the Big 12/Big East Battle matchup. The Bears had originally been scheduled to start the season Wednesday night against No. 18 Arizona State, and then play No. 3 Villanova or Boston College on Thanksgiving Day in Connecticut. Baylor didn't make that trip after head coach Scott Drew revealed he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Braves boost rotation, sign Morton for a year at $15 million

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have added another veteran arm to their rotation by signing two-time All-Star Charlie Morton to a $15 million, one-year deal. The 37-year-old right-hander is returning to the Braves after helping Tampa Bay reach the World Series this season.

The signing comes after left-hander Drew Smyly signed an $11 million, one-year deal with the Braves on Nov. 16. Smyly, 31, became the first of the 181 free agents to switch teams.

Morton was drafted by Atlanta in 2002 and made his major league debut with the Braves in 2008 before he was traded to Pittsburgh in 2009. 

— Tampa Bay outfielder Randy Arozarena has been arrested in Mexico's Yucatan state for a situation involving an apparent custody dispute. The incident comes just two weeks after he won the Babe Ruth award for the Most Valuable Player in the postseason. Prosecutors say Arozarena was detained "for problems relating to his ex-partner." He has not been formally charged yet. 

— Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda's condition has improved while he remains hospitalized in Southern California. A Los Angeles Dodgers spokesman says the 93-year-old former Dodgers manager has been taking online calls with former players. The team first announced he was hospitalized on Nov. 15.

“Good afternoon everybody. I hope everyone is having a good Thanksgiving week. It’s a different week for us with not any students on campus and school not in session. We flipped our week a little bit. We will go a little bit earlier on Wednesday and pretty early on Thursday. Even though it doesn’t feel like a short week, it is a short week to prepare for a really good Baylor team that I feel has played really well at times and played really well on both sides of the ball and have had opportunities to win just like we have in the fourth quarter and haven’t gotten that done similar to ourselves. It’s a game that our kids know the importance of. I was pleased with practice yesterday. We had a really good team meeting and talked about a lot of things. Our kids bounced back and had a really good day on Monday. Now we just have to sustain that and make sure we are playing at as high of a level as we can. We have to do a great job as coaches of putting them in positions to be successful on Saturday. It was a humbling day on Saturday for all of us, players and coaches included. Sometimes that happens to you in this profession. Nobody wants to have that happen ever to them, but sometimes it does and you have to learn from it and grow from it and you have to hit it head on and attack the next day.”

On the importance of fast starts to the team...

“It gives life to a young team. When you have a new offensive line, a freshman quarterback, a freshman running back, and some newer kids in the secondary – those are areas where we don’t have a ton of experience – I think it is important to have some confidence built early. You saw what it did here at home against Oklahoma to have a lead and to play with energy and emotion. Then, you see what it does when we don’t have that, whether it is West Virginia or this past weekend at Iowa State. I would flip it and say we were down against Oklahoma and found a way to continue to have great resolve. Part of that is the fact that we didn’t finish some drives early offensively and we didn’t prevent some touchdowns defensively. We had a couple opportunities to get off the field on third down on defense on the first drive, and they took it down and scored. That was pretty demoralizing for both players and defensive staff. Then, obviously, when you get first and goal at the four or five, you have to find a way to punch that in there.”

On the team bouncing back since Saturday...

“They’ve done a nice job. Granted, we are only getting into Tuesday’s practice. These kids have really great resolve and great pride in their craft, and I know that we have unbelievable leaders with high character and high integrity. I told them they need to step up and take some ownership. We as coaches need to take ownership and they need to take ownership as players and challenge each other to be better and challenge each other to reach the standard that we all expect, not only on the field, but off the field as well and doing things right. I thought they adhered to the message well yesterday.”

On if Malik Knowles, Elijah Sullivan and Justin Hughes will be back...

“Malik (Knowles) should be back. I don’t know on Elijah (Sullivan) and Justin (Hughes). I would have to get with Mindy (Hoffman) to see where they are at. Malik and Jaylen Pickle should be back.”

On if there is more clarity on the quarterback position entering Saturday...

“We are going to keep working both of them. I thought Nick (Ast) did some nice things. I think it was a great learning experience for Will (Howard), especially after he got hit really good the one time and then had a couple frustrating plays for him. I thought it was a good opportunity for him to learn from the sideline and watch. I didn’t want to get him any more shots taken, especially when the game was in the balance that it was where it was going in Iowa State’s favor. I didn’t think that was going to help his growth either by having him take more shots. Both practiced yesterday, and obviously it was a limited day on Monday, but we will keep working both of them, and we are excited about the opportunity for Will to bounce back and the opportunity for Nick to build on what he had on the field.”

On considering playing Jaren Lewis on Saturday...

“I didn’t think at that time we did because of where the game was at. You also have to realize we had 46 or 48 plays. That’s not enough for me to say, ‘Hey Jaren, go take two snaps and hand it off.’ We need to play more plays on offense and not as many on defense.”

On issues about holding each other accountable...

“I think some of this is about the fact that it is 2020 and we are in a global pandemic and life is tough. There is nothing that’s normal, there is nothing that’s easy. We told the guys from the start of this thing in June when they first arrived on campus and got sent home, and then in July when they came back to campus, ‘Guys this is going to be a tough year and a tough year to handle all this stuff, but, guys, life is going to be tough. Life is going to throw you a bunch of curveballs over the next 20, 30, 50 years of your life. You have to be able to fight through the adversity and you have to be able to survive when adversity strikes.’ We continue to preach the same messaging throughout our coaching staff. Once again, I have a tremendous amount of confidence in the leaders on this football team to continue that brand of messaging going out to the younger guys.”

On actively recruiting in the transfer portal...

“Well, it’s a lot of names to comb through. We always look at it. Maybe, I don’t, but someone in our recruiting office does maybe every two weeks. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in January when I believe it goes through that anyone can transfer one time without penalty. I think that is when you are really going to see, unfortunately, some flood gates opening. That’s not at Power 5 only, that’s Group of 5, that’s FCS, that’s whatever you want to say because kids are going to have the opportunity. There are voices outside your own football office and your football community that are telling some of these young men, ‘Hey, go jump into this, go try this.’ Unfortunately, as people are finding out that a lot of them are leaving that portal and a lot of them are staying in that portal or dropping down to a level that is different to what they’ve played at, all those things. Let’s take it all back to 2020. It’s a tough year for any young man to fight through whether it’s an opt-out, a transfer, or sticking with your team, which I’m so excited for the guys who have. It would be pretty easy to come in and say, ‘Hey, let me get out of this season and opt-out in game 6, 8, or 9.’ The kids that are with us, I couldn’t be more pleased with. This is not an easy battle. Forget about what is going on a football field, all the other things, and it shows the true character and integrity of the kids who have stuck by their teammates.”

On what complications are added with recruiting this year...

“Well, the fact that right now, this is how you and I would recruit. If I was recruiting you, we’d be on a Zoom call and that’s how I’m getting to know you. I’m not going into your home and visiting with your parents. I’m not going to your school and visiting with your head coach. I’m on a phone call with a parent. I’m on a phone call with a head coach. I’m on a phone call with somebody. It’s the only way we know how right now. That’s the only way that’s available to us. That connection is not there of any of us coaches sitting in a living room with somebody, sitting with a young man in his coach’s office or whatever it may be. That’s everyone across the country that are going through these same challenges. That’s my fear moving forward, especially what this year has done. Kids are going to choose schools all over the country without ever being on that campus and never being that far away from home. They’ve never taken an official visit. Some have never taken an unofficial visit. And all of the sudden, we throw that carrot out there that if you don’t like it, you can just leave. That’s sometimes in the best interest of some kids. Oftentimes, and most times, it’s not because just like life, you have to be able to fight through the adverse times that you have. That’s my concern for all of college athletics as we move into the open market for transfers, as well as not getting the opportunity to build those relationships.”

On Baylor’s record not telling the whole story...

“Without question. I watched just a little bit of that game (Baylor at Iowa State), and they really rattled (Brock) Purdy in the first half. Then Brock, like he does, came back and played really well in the second half, but they had an opportunity to win that game. During our open week, I watched the entire Baylor vs. Texas Tech game. Baylor was up two scores in the second half and had an opportunity to close the game out. Credit Texas Tech. They found a way to come back, and so that was another game they had an opportunity. We watched, before we played West Virginia, a really talented Baylor team that took West Virginia at West Virginia to overtime. We said boy, this is a pretty physical and good football team. Those are three losses right there that I’m sure if you asked Dave (Aranda), he’d say they had a chance to win and should’ve lost those three games. Then there’s TCU and Texas, but they’re a team that could probably have four wins right now. Football is so strange. We’re not playing at the best level for us right now, but we played at a high enough level against Oklahoma. We played at a high enough level to beat TCU. We played at a high enough level to beat Texas Tech. The latter two were with Will (Howard) at the helm. We just have to focus on what we can control. That’s our play, our effort, our attitude, our energy and our ability to execute.”

On what Baylor has gone through with COVID this season...

“Yeah, and they had the open week before they played us. I’m assuming they were able to get a number of practices in, whether with their young guys or continuing to develop everybody and I’m sure that’s what Dave (Aranda) wanted to do was develop everybody because he’s still putting in his system. You can flip on the film and watch a very fast, physical defense. Similar to what I say about Skylar (Thompson), I kind of feel the same way when watching Charlie Brewer play. If he’s in the game, they have an opportunity to win. I’ve said this: every time Skylar steps on the field, I think we have an opportunity to win. I think that same thing with Brewer. I think he’s a really, really good competitor. I think he’s an excellent football player. He gives those guys a chance to win.”

On the performance of Cody Fletcher and Daniel Green at Iowa State...

“I thought both of them played really well. I did. It wasn’t perfect. Both of them missed some plays that they would tell you, as well. I thought both of them played really hard. I thought both of them played physical. I thought both of them hit their fits. The issue we had is that they had to play every snap for the most part. When you’re playing every other series like they were with Eli (Sullivan) and Justin (Hughes) in, you see the game at a different perspective and you’re able to stay fresh. Then you throw in the fact that Cody is a starter on every special teams, and we were going to keep him on a number of those special teams until we lost Austin Moore – who was a backup to both of those guys – on Thursday of the Iowa State week. Austin Moore was going to play a significant role in that game at Iowa State. I feel awful for Austin because he had his opportunity taken away, and so we had to flip the script on Thursday and Friday and take Cody off of all those special teams and put another guy in there that hadn’t taken those reps. We felt like we could keep him on special teams because Austin was going to be able to sub him out. It didn’t happen that way. We have this week to decide what Cody is going to be on from a special-teams standpoint and what he needs to be off of. Cody and Daniel need to play the majority of the snaps at linebacker.”

On if he knows what the team will do on Thanksgiving...

“Well we better know. It’s Tuesday, and Thursday is coming fast. We’ll practice late morning on Thursday. We’ll have a Thanksgiving meal for the entire team up in our stadium club because it’s a big enough space that we can have guys up there and socially distance them. Per Big 12 rules, everybody has to test on Friday morning. They can’t go home, plus I don’t think it’s a safe environment for them to go home. Everybody will come in. Our young guys will lift Friday morning, then they’ll get their test. We’re still working through it with our administration and our operations people. We’re trying to take as many kids as possible to Baylor because I don’t want somebody from out of region to have to sit in his dorm room on Thanksgiving. That’s not fair. It’s been a hard-enough semester that we’re trying to take as many guys as we can. If we can’t dress them all, we can’t dress them all. I’ll have them on the sideline. I’ll have them be a part of it. You’re right: normally people would be coming to see them or they’d be able to run home, and that’s just not the case this year.”

On using last week’s loss as motivation and a chance to bounce back...

“Great question, and we’ll see on Saturday. What I saw at practice yesterday was really positive. The right guys were out in front of the group. It’s something we have talked about as coaches. We have to keep those right guys out in front of the group that are not afraid to hold somebody accountable, hold themselves accountable and lead by example. I’m excited to see how we respond.”

On if he expected things to get to this point with COVID...

“When conferences started cancelling, I was afraid we would be in this situation and would get to Thanksgiving and had played four games. Let’s credit Bob Bowlsby. Let’s credit the Big 12 and the athletic directors in the Big 12. We’ve done it better than any other conference. The fact that we’ve played eight games and you have some schools stuck on one and two. It’s crazy, and that’s a credit to the amount of time and effort every institution and the conference office and Bob Bowlsby have put in to make sure that we have the right protocols and play as many games as we have. I also look at it as we were close on Saturday to play or not play. I know we have a number of seniors that I don’t know if they’re coming back. Some of them maybe have jobs. Some of them are ready to move on. I think we owe it to those guys as coaches to play as many games as we can so that those kids can continue to get an opportunity to tee it up and play because this is going to be the last time some of those guys ever play football.”

On the future of Austin Moore at linebacker...

“I’m excited for Austin because he’s had a terrific fall through all of the turbulence we’ve had. He’s one that when we do our old players vs. young players, he shows up and does a great job learning our system. The special-teams stuff, he’s continuing to improve in all phases of special teams. The thing I love about Austin, he’s a coachable kid that knows he needs to improve, that knows he hasn’t arrived and doesn’t have all the answers, that just wants the opportunity to show that he’s capable of playing in the Big 12. I firmly believe that he is. I was hopeful that he would’ve had an opportunity. He didn’t get that opportunity, and I visited with Austin. ‘Don’t let it define you. You’re going to have that opportunity. Just keep doing what you’re doing,’ because if we have more kids like Austin Moore, we’re going to be really successful.”

On what was discussed during the team meeting on Monday…

“We talked about, and he (Chris Klieman) talked about it after the game, accountability. The biggest thing I think that we took from it was, yeah, we have a lot to learn from that game, but we’re into Baylor prep now. It’s time to move on, take what we learned and continue to just pound the stone one day at a time and get better and just flush it at this point.”

On moving on after a difficult offensive performance…
