K-State (4-4, 4-3 Big 12) marched down the field on its opening drive of the game but couldn’t convert a fourth-and-goal against Iowa State (6-2, 6-1).

That set the tone for an afternoon when the Cyclones would limit K-State to 149 yards of total offense.

“Our offense had a great first drive and we couldn’t finish that drive and then kind of sputtered after that,” Chris Klieman said. “Frustrating in all phases. Talked about that to the guys. We need to improve, get better and we can’t worry about things we can’t control.”

Deuce Vaughn collected 94 yards serving as K-State’s primary kick returner. He was involved in the backfield and as a receiver against Iowa State, but couldn’t replicate his success on special teams.

“They have a really good defense. They flew around all day and just made plays,” Vaughn said. “It’s always about that next play, next play, next play. We need to get back to that.”

K-State arrived in Ames without several playmakers on both sides of the football, including a depleted linebacking core that struggled to slow down the Cyclones.

Cody Fletcher led K-State with nine tackles, including seven solo efforts against Iowa State.

“We gave up too many explosive plays,” he said. “The name of the game for Iowa State is shifts and motions to get us out of alignment. For myself, they got me out of alignment a few times and I just didn’t make the play.”

Will Howard got the start at quarterback for K-State, going 3-for-9 for 32 passing yards.

On the first drive of the afternoon, Howard rushed for 13 yards on four carries and tossed a 29-yard pass to Chabastin Taylor to march the Wildcats deep into Iowa State territory.

But a fourth-down stop gave the Cyclones all the momentum they would need on Saturday, as K-State was held in check the rest of the game.

Howard would give way to Nick Ast at quarterback in the second half, as the Cimarron native went 6-for-10 for 44 yards in his first extended action of the season.

“He’s earned the right. He’s had great practices; he’s been with us the whole time. Wanted to see what he could do,” Klieman said. “I didn’t want to have Will take any more shots because we weren’t really doing a great job of protecting and they were teeing off.”

Vaughn led the Wildcats on the ground with 44 rushing yards, leaving Jack Trice Stadium with 138 total yards after his explosive afternoon on special teams.

Chabastin Taylor led all K-State receivers with 37 yards on a pair of grabs against the Cyclones.

The Wildcats are back in action next Saturday for their final road game of the season, a trip to Waco for a matchup with Baylor.

“Just coming together off the field and having a talk with each other like, ‘We need everybody.’ [Because] that one hurts,” Fletcher said. “We’ve just got to move forward starting on Monday and get ready for Baylor.”

It's the first time the Cyclones have been in first place this late in a season since they were tied at the top of the old North Division in 2004. Iowa State has been poised to make late-season runs in recent seasons under coach Matt Campbell but have been unable to finish the job. Kansas State began the week with 12 active COVID-19 cases. Wildcats coach Chris Klieman says he's been on edge waiting for players' test results this week.&nbsp;

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State backup quarterback Will Levis could make the second start of his career when the winless Nittany Lions host Iowa. Penn State head coach James Franklin said Levis provided "a spark" after replacing Sean Clifford in last week's loss to Nebraska. Levis ran for 61 yards and added 219 yards through the air for the Nittany Lions, who are 0-4 after starting the season ranked in the Top 10. Iowa has won two straight following an 0-2 start, including a 35-7 romp over Minnesota last week.

UNDATED (AP) — The No. 4 Baylor Lady Bears are the preseason favorite again in the Big 12 Conference. They won their 10th regular season title in a row last season, but didn't get a chance to defend their 2019 national championship when the season was ended abruptly by the coronavirus pandemic. The virus is lingering at the start of a new season. Iowa State is No. 15. The Cyclones go into coach Bill Fennelly's 26th season returning Big 12 scoring leader Ashley Joens. Baylor has preseason player of the year NaLyssa Smith and top newcomer DiJonai Carrington, the former All-Pac 12 guard at Stanford.

Free agency opens: Fox and Kings agree on $163 million deal

UNDATED (AP) — Free agency in the NBA has started. De'Aaron Fox was the first huge winner, agreeing to a deal with the Sacramento Kings that will pay him at least $163 million over five years. No deals can be signed until 12:01 p.m. Sunday. 

— Danilo Gallinari — one of the top wings on the free-agent market — agreed to a three-year contract worth $61.5 million, a person with knowledge told AP. ESPN and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported the agreement. Gallinari averaged 18.7 points for Oklahoma City last season and is a 38% career shooter from 3-point range.

— Joe Harris has agreed to re-sign with the Nets, keeping one of the NBA's best shooters in Brooklyn. The Nets checked off what general manager Sean Marks called their biggest priority in free agency by agreeing to a deal with the swingman. Priority Sports, which represents Harris, announced the deal on Twitter. ESPN reported that Harris would get $75 million over four years. Harris finished his fourth season in Brooklyn by averaging a career-best 14.5 points in 69 games in 2019-20. 

— The Timberwolves reached a $60 million agreement with restricted free agent shooting guard Malik Beasley that's for three years plus a team option for a fourth year, a person with knowledge of the deal confirmed to AP. 

— Jordan Clarkson is staying and Derrick Favors is coming back, according to people with direct knowledge of the transactions. Clarkson agreed to a four-year, $52 million deal; he averaged 15.6 points in 42 games after getting traded to Utah last December.

— Derrick Jones Jr., the league's reigning Slam Dunk champion, agreed to a two-year deal with the Trail Blazers. The Athletic first reported the agreement, which a person with knowledge later confirmed to AP.

— The Pistons received commitments Friday night from centers Mason Plumlee and Jahlil Okafor, people familiar with those deals told AP. ESPN, which first reported the Plumlee agreement, said he would sign a three-year deal for $25 million.

—The Mavericks and Trey Burke have agreed on a $10 million, three-year contract to bring the guard back after he played well in the NBA bubble. Burke originally joined Dallas in the trade with New York headlined by Kristaps Porzingis in early 2019. The Mavericks didn't re-sign Burke before last season, and he ended up in Philadelphia.

— The Heat got quick agreements from point guard Goran Dragic and center Meyers Leonard on two-year deals, the second year in both cases being team options. Dragic will make about $18 million next season, Leonard about $9 million.

— The last time Facundo Campazzo and Nikola Jokic shared a court in a real game together was during last year's Basketball World Cup in China. Campazzo agreed to a two-year deal with the Denver Nuggets on Friday's opening day of free agency, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. 

Meanwhile, the NBA is investigating whether one — a widely reported sign-and-trade move that would have sent Bogdan Bogdanovic from Sacramento to Milwaukee — happened earlier than league rules allow. A person with knowledge of the matter told The Associated Press on Thursday that the league is probing whether such an agreement existed, because if it did free-agent negotiations with Bogdanovic would have clearly started earlier than permissible.

AP source: NBA, Raptors denied permission to play in Canada

TORONTO (AP) — The Canadian government has denied a request by the NBA and the Raptors to play in Toronto amid the pandemic, and the team says it will start the season next month in Tampa, Florida.

The official says there's a chance that at some point next year the decision could be reviewed.

The Raptors and the NBA needed an exemption to a requirement that anyone entering Canada for nonessential reasons must isolate for 14 days. The U.S.-Canada border remains closed to nonessential travel.

UNDATED (AP) — The Saints have placed quarterback Drew Brees on injured reserve, meaning he'll miss at least three games with rib injuries. 

Brees was unable to finish last Sunday's game after absorbing a heavy hit on a sack attempt by 287-pound San Francisco defensive tackle Kentavius Street, who was penalized for roughing on the play. Street landed on the right side of Brees' torso as the two went to the ground. 

Brees was diagnosed on Monday with rib fractures and a collapsed lung. The Saints remaining healthy QBs are Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston.

— Cleveland Browns defensive star Myles Garrett has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Sunday's game against the Philadephia Eagles. The NFL leader in sacks, Garrett was placed on the COVID list on Friday by the Browns, who had isolated him at home the previous two days because he was showing symptoms. It's not clear when Garrett will return, so his status for next week's game at Jacksonville is in question.

— Sam Darnold might be back leading the New York Jets' huddle as soon as next week. The quarterback will be sidelined for the second straight game with a shoulder injury but coach Adam Gase was optimistic Friday that Darnold could return for next Sunday's home game against Miami, but, he's out for the Jets play the Chargers in Los Angeles this Sunday.

— The New York Giants have had three more players test positive for COVID-19. The Giants, who have a bye this weekend, learned about the results Thursday night and told the unidentified players to self-isolate. Contract tracing has started.

— The San Francisco 49ers have waived defensive end Takkarist McKinley after he failed a physical. The Niners claimed McKinley off waivers earlier this week after he failed a physical in Cincinnati but then cut him after he failed their physical as well. The Niners also placed three more players on the COVID-19 list with receiver Brandon Aiyuk, left tackle Trent Williams and tight end Daniel Helm being added.

— The Denver Broncos have told season ticket holders that due to the increase of COVID-19 cases, Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins will be the last one played with fans in attendance at Empower Field at Mile High this season. The Broncos' final three home games, against the Saints, Bills and Raiders, will be played without any fans in the stands.

— Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams returned to practice Friday and is expected to play Sunday at Indianapolis despite dealing with an ankle injury this week. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Pac-12 has canceled Washington State's football game at Stanford. The conference said Saturday night's game has been called off because the Cougars don't have enough scholarship players available because of positive COVID-19 tests and contact tracing. This is the first game both schools have had canceled this season because of the coronavirus.

In other college football news related to the pandemic:

— Tennessee's 70 year old athletic director Phillip Fulmer is in isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus. And Miami's 46 year old Manny Diaz is the latest active coach to become infected. Tennessee plays at No. 23 Auburn on Saturday. Diaz says he will work virtually with the No. 12 Hurricanes until he can return to the field. Miami is not scheduled to play again until Dec. 5 at Wake Forest. 

— Washington State starting quarterback Jayden de Laura has tested positive for COVID-19 and won't play in Saturday's game at Stanford. The Spokesman-Review newspaper reported that de Laura might also miss the Nov. 27 game against Washington if he is placed in a 14-day quarantine. Redshirt sophomore Cammon Cooper and redshirt freshman Gunner Cruz are listed as backups to de Laura on the team's depth chart. Neither has ever taken a snap in a game for the Cougars.

— Seventh-ranked Cincinnati's game against No. 25 Tulsa has been moved again in a shuffling of the American Athletic Conference football schedule. The Bearcats and Golden Hurricane are now set to play Dec. 12, a week before the planned date of the conference championship game. The game was originally scheduled for Oct. 17, then moved to Dec. 4. The AAC also announced new dates for five other games postponed because of COVID-19 issues. The first is Memphis at Navy on Nov. 28.

— The University of Pittsburgh says its players will be outfitted with face coverings to use on the field and sideline during its home game against Virginia Tech on Saturday, in accordance with recent guidelines handed down by state officials in Pennsylvania. The Nittany Lions host Iowa on Saturday.

Red Sox tab Will Venable as bench coach in Cora's return

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have hired Will Venable to be a bench coach on manager Alex Cora's staff. 

Venable spent the last three seasons with the Cubs as a first- and third-base coach. He was a 12-year veteran as a major league outfielder, mostly with the San Diego Padres. 

Venable's father, Max, also spent a dozen years in the majors. 

The Red Sox also said that Jason Varitek has been named game planning coordinator, Ramón Vázquez will be the quality control coach and interpreter, and Kevin Walker has been named bullpen coach.

— The New York Mets have signed right-hander Sam McWilliams, who's spent six years in the minor leagues with three other organizations. The 25-year-old will get $750,000 in the majors and $195,000 in the minors. The 6-foot-7 McWilliams was in Tampa Bay's 60-player pool this year. He is 30-35 with a 3.85 ERA in his career, making 94 starts and 15 relief appearances. McWilliams pitched in the Philadelphia and Arizona systems before making it to Triple-A with Tampa Bay in 2019.

— The Tampa Bay Rays have designated outfielder Hunter Renfroe for assignment, helping clear room on the 40-man roster for three young prospects who were not part of the team's run to the World Series.

Streb shoots 63 to lead Villegas by 2 shot at Sea Island

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Robert Streb is the leader going into the weekend at the RSM Classic with history on his side. Not only is Streb's only PGA Tour victory at Sea Island, but, the last four winners had the 36-hole lead. Streb doesn't want to be the one who breaks that streak. He got in position with a 9-under 63 that matched his career low. 

Two shots behind is Camilo Villegas, the sentimental favorite at Sea Island. Villegas is trying to overcome the death of 2-year-old daughter Mia this summer. She was diagnosed with tumors on her brain and spine.

Kim leads McDonald in Pelican Women's Championship

BELLEAIR, Fla. (AP) — Breakthrough winners in their last starts, Sei Young Kim and Ally McDonald were on top again Friday in the Pelican Women's Championship. The second-ranked Kim shot a 5-under 65 at Pelican Golf Club to take a one-stroke lead over McDonald into the weekend. McDonald had a 66. 

Kim had an 8-under 132 total in the first-year tournament originally set for the same week as the PGA Championship in May.

Yet despite having to wait deep into the night to finally make their selections, the Kansas City Chiefs have managed to get a massive return on their draft investments, not only this past year but going back to the 2019 draft.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big 12 football championship game could have a very familiar look, or could have some new teams. No. 18 Oklahoma and No. 22 Texas could have another December rematch if they both win the rest of their regular-season games. The Sooners or Longhorns have won the last 10 Big 12 championship games. But there are five teams with one or two conferences losses with a month to go before the title game. No. 14 Oklahoma State and No. 17 Iowa State are the top two teams in the current standings. Neither of them have played in the league's title game.

Wilson throws 2 TDs, Seahawks hold off Cardinals 28-21

SEATTLE (AP) — Russell Wilson rebounded from his worst performance of the season to throw for two touchdowns, and the Seattle Seahawks moved back on top of the NFC West with a 28-21 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Wilson was flawless, erasing the mistakes from the past four weeks when Seattle dropped three of four including losses in the past two weeks to Buffalo and the Los Angeles Rams. For a few days, Seattle will be back on top alone until the Rams play on Monday night against Tampa Bay. Kyler Murray was 29 of 42 for 269 yards and two TDs, but Seattle was able to sack the QB three times. 

Garrett still away, Browns hopeful for sack leader's return

CLEVELAND (AP) — NFL sacks leader Myles Garrett remained away from his Cleveland teammates for the second straight day, but the Browns expect him to return Friday and play this weekend against Philadelphia. 

The Browns are also without starting right tackle Jack Conklin and kicker Cody Parkey. Both were placed on the COVID-19 list after they were identified as high risk for having close contact with an outside practitioner who tested positive.

— The Chicago Bears placed punt returner Dwayne Harris on injured reserve Thursday because of a triceps injury. Harris, signed to the practice squad late last month, has appeared in three games, averaging 8.1 yards on 10 punt returns. He was injured in Chicago's loss to Minnesota Monday night. After Harris left the game, receiver Anthony Miller broke the Bears' longest punt return of the year with a 32-yarder. 

— The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed rookie cornerback CJ Henderson on injured reserve with a groin injury. The move creates a huge hole in their secondary days before hosting unbeaten Pittsburgh. If D.J. Hayden is able to play, Tre Herndon and Sidney Jones would start outside. If not, Chris Claybrooks likely would make his second career start against one of the best receiving groups in the league.

— The New York Jets' suddenly thin and inexperienced secondary took another big hit. Veteran cornerback Brian Poole is having surgery on his injured shoulder and coach Adam Gase confirmed that Poole will be out the rest of the year. The Jets also got the news that starting cornerback Bless Austin would miss practice with a neck injury and he was getting an MRI. Three of New York's five healthy cornerbacks are rookies.

Collins, Brin lead No. 25 Tulsa to stunning 2 OT win

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Zaven Collins returned an interception 96 yards for a touchdown in the second overtime to give No. 25 Tulsa a 30-24 comeback victory over Tulane on Thursday night. Tulsa forced overtime with a 37-yard Hail Mary completion as time expired, with third-stringer Brin Davis connecting with JuanCarlos Santana. Tulsa is 5-1 overall and 5-0 in the American Athletic Conference. Brin entered with 2:09 left in the third quarter after backup Seth Boomer was carted off the field because of a left leg injury. Starter Zach Smith left with a torso injury late in the first quarter. Playing its first game as a ranked team since 2008, outgained Tulane 522 yards to 302, but turned the ball over three times. 

Maryland-Michigan State canceled after Terps' virus outbreak

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten game Saturday between Maryland and Michigan State has been canceled. 

A COVID-19 outbreak on the Terrapins resulted in a positive test for coach Michael Locksley. 

Also, No. 24 Louisiana-Lafayette canceled its game against Central Arkansas on Saturday because of positive COVID-19 tests. 

Later Thursday, the Mountain West announced San Jose State at Fresno State was canceled because of COVID-19 cases and contact tracing with the Bulldogs.

That is the third Mountain West game this week to be called off, joining Utah State at Wyoming, and UNLV at Colorado State.

In other virus-related college football news: — The No. 11 Ducks will host UCLA on Saturday after another shuffling of schedules in the Pac-12. The game will feature two dual-threat quarterbacks. Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough is only the second Ducks QB to throw for more than 200 yards and run for 80 or more in back-to-back games. UCLA's Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns while running for 52 yards and another score in the Bruins' victory over Cal.

— Lou Holtz has tested positive for the coronavirus. The 83-year-old former college football coach confirmed the test Thursday to Columbia TV station WOLO. Holtz led Notre Dame to the 1988 national title in a Hall of Fame career. He has worked for ESPN and campaigned for President Donald Trump. Holtz is set to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump.

Knicks waive group of veterans ahead of NBA free agency

UNDATED (AP) — NBA free agency is usually a weeklong frenzy. Deals get struck, then teams and players must wait a few days before they can sign those contracts. And from there, a few more months often pass before the player goes to work with his new club. 

What promises to be a chaotic free-agent window opens in the NBA at 6 p.m. Eastern on Friday, just a couple days after the NBA draft, a mere 42 hours before signings can begin and about a week and a half before training camps around the league open. 

In move ahead of the free agent signing period:

— A person familiar with the situation says Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward opted out of the final year of a contract that would have paid him $34.1 million, making him a free agent. Hayward could still re-sign with the team, either to remain in Boston or be part of a sign-and-trade deal that would open up more potential destinations. Brad Stevens, who also coached Hayward in college at Butler, recruited Hayward to Boston in 2017 and the team signed to a four-year, $128 million deal. 

— The New York Knicks have waived veterans Elfrid Payton, Taj Gibson and Wayne Ellington and declined their team option on Bobby Portis. The Knicks signed all the veterans as part of a seven-player class in the summer of 2019. They enter free agency Friday with only Julius Randle and Reggie Bullock remaining from the group, having traded Marcus Morris to the Clippers during the season. The Knicks also waived forward Kenny Wooten and declined their option on guard Theo Pinson.

— Guard Tim Hardaway Jr. is opting in at $19 million for the final year of his contract with the Dallas Mavericks, while center Willie Cauley-Stein is moving on after declining his $2.3 million option. A person with knowledge of the decisions confirmed both moves to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no announcements were planned. Hardaway shot a career-best 40% from 3-point range playing alongside 21-year-old sensation Luka Doncic as the Mavericks reached the playoffs for the first time in four years. He averaged 19.3 points per game. Cauley-Stein's impact was minimal after a trade with Golden State.

— A person familiar with the situation says the Atlanta Hawks have agreed to trade center Dewayne Dedmon to the Detroit Pistons for guards Tony Snell and Khyri Thomas. The deal allows the Hawks to clear a logjam at center. The Hawks selected center Onyeka Okongwu from Southern Cal with the No. 6 pick of the NBA draft on Wednesday night. Last season, the Hawks acquired center Clint Capela from Houston in a trade-deadline deal. Capela was injured and didn't play before Atlanta's season was halted by the coronavirus pandemic. 

—The Milwaukee Bucks have requested waivers on Turkish forward Ersan Ilyasova. The 33-year-old Ilyasova played 63 games and made eight starts for the Bucks last season. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 6.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 15.7 minutes. This marked Ilyasova's third stint with the Bucks. He began his career with Milwaukee in 2006-07 and also played for the Bucks from 2009-15 and from 2018-20.

— The Los Angeles Clippers acquired guard Luke Kennard from Detroit, and sent guards Landry Shamet to Brooklyn and Rodney McGruder to Detroit as they attempt to improve the supporting cast around Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. In addition to Kennard, the Clippers received center Justin Patton from the Pistons in the draft-night deal, as well as the draft rights to junior-college player Jay Scrubb and four second-round picks. 

Yankees closer Chapman gets suspension reduced to 2 games

UNDATED (AP) — Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman's suspension for throwing near the head of Tampa Bay's Mike Brosseau was reduced from three games to two after he appealed the decision. Major League Baseball announced the result of the appeal. It was heard by special assistant to the commissioner John McHale Jr. Chapman threw a 101 mph fastball near Brosseau's head on his first pitch to the pinch hitter with two outs in the ninth inning of a 5-3 victory over the Rays on Sept. 1.

— The Milwaukee Brewers have promoted Matt Arnold to senior vice president and general manager. The 41-year-old Arnold joined the Brewers as a vice president and assistant general manager in October 2015. He was promoted to senior vice president and assistant general manager in June 2019.

— The Detroit Tigers have requested unconditional release waivers on utilityman Brandon Dixon so he can pursue a job in Japan. Dixon led the Tigers with 15 home runs in 2019, but the 28-year-old had only 13 at-bats in the majors during this year's shortened season. 

— The Washington Nationals are moving their Triple-A franchise back East. After two years in Fresno, California, the Nationals are relocating to Rochester, New York. The change ends the Rochester Red Wings' 18-year affiliation with the Minnesota Twins and brings the Nationals back to the International League in upstate New York after two years with the Fresno Grizzlies. Washington's Triple-A affiliate was in Syracuse for a decade before the move to the West Coast.

— The major league minimum salary will rise to $570,500 next season, a hike of $7,000. The minor league minimum for a player signing his first major league contract increases from $46,000 to $46,600 next season, and the minor league minimum for a player signing a second or later major league contract goes up from $91,800 to $93,000. In the final two seasons of the five-year deal, the increase is calculated as the rise from October to October in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.

Rublev beats already-qualified Thiem at ATP Finals

LONDON (AP) — Rafael Nadal advanced to the semifinals at the ATP Finals for the first time in five years and knocked out the defending champion in the process, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at the O2 Arena.

 It is the sixth time in 10 appearances that Nadal has reached the last four of the season-ending tournament, which is the biggest title he has yet to win in his illustrious careers. 

Andrey Rublev beat U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem (teem) 6-2, 7-5 in the early match. Thiem was already assured of winning the group after beating Tsitsipas and Nadal in the first two rounds. 

Camilo Villegas, Matt Wallace tied for lead at Sea Island

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) — Camilo Villegas and Matt Wallace are tied for the lead at 6-under 64 after one round of the RSM Classic at Seaside. 

Villegas made a birdie on his last hole at the Seaside course. Wallace made a 30-foot par on his last hole at Seaside.

Sophia Popov shoots 64 to lead Pelican Women's Championship

BELLEAIR, Fla. (AP) — Women's British Open winner Sophia Popov left top-ranked playing partner Jin Young Ko and everyone else behind Thursday in the Pelican Women's Championship. 

Popov shot a 6-under 64 in windy conditions to take a two-stroke lead over Ashleigh Buhai, with Ko eight shots behind after a 72 in her first LPGA Tour start of the year. 

Ko, the No. 1 player in the world for the last 68 weeks, has been home in South Korea since the COVID-19 pandemic. She plans to play three straight tournaments through the U.S. Women's Open.

Men abused by doc say Ohio State's response has added trauma

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Men who allege decades-old sexual abuse by an Ohio State team doctor and are upset about how the university has handled their unsettled claims have pushed for a stronger response in a new round of live and pre-recorded comments to school trustees. 

Several of the men asked trustees during a meeting Thursday how they'd feel if their own children had experienced such mistreatment. 

New Ohio State President Kristina Johnson reiterated the school's previous statements that the behavior of the late Richard Strauss was reprehensible and the failure to stop him during his tenure was unacceptable. She assured the men she's listening to their comments.

Former wrestler Mike Schyck pointed out it was his third time pleading with the board.

Jake Scott, former Miami safety, Super Bowl MVP, dies at 75

MIAMI (AP) — Former NFL safety Jake Scott has died at 75. Scott was was the most valuable player in the Super Bowl that completed the Miami Dolphins' 1972 perfect season. Former teammate Dick Anderson says Scott died Thursday in Atlanta after a fall down a stairway that left him in a coma. Scott played in three consecutive Super Bowls, won back-to-back championship rings and made the Pro Bowl five years in a row with Miami. He had two interceptions, including a 55-yard return from the end zone, against the Redskins as the '72 Dolphins won to finish 17-0.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 22 Texas at Kansas was among six games postponed by COVID-19 problems as the virus took another chunk out of this weekend's major college football schedule. Overall, 14 out of 62 games involving Bowl Subdivision teams scheduled for this week have been called off. Texas-Kansas was just the second Big 12 conference game to be postponed this season and was rescheduled for Dec. 12. The American Athletic Conference had to call off Navy at South Florida and Houston at SMU. The conference will work to reschedule those games. The Mountain West's Thursday night game between Utah State and Wyoming was canceled and No. 24 Louisiana-Lafayette said it would not play its nonconference game against Central Arkansas on Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — It takes a lot to get under Chiefs coach Andy Reid's skin. The sight of the Las Vegas Raiders doing a victory lap around Arrowhead Stadium in their caravan of buses after ending the Chiefs' 13-game win streak last month? Well, that was enough to do it. As the Chiefs get ready to visit Las Vegas on Sunday, you can bet Reid and the rest of the Chiefs will be aiming for a little bit of revenge.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are signing safety DeAndre Baker, taking a chance on the 2019 first-round draft pick after he was let go by the New York Giants amid legal problems but subsequently had all charges against him dropped this week. The Chiefs are signing Baker to the practice squad, though that may be a short-lived stop before he is elevated to the 53-man roster. Baker must first pass a physical and go through COVID-19 testing before he is allowed in the locker room.

UNDATED (AP) — An Iowa defensive line that had to replace three starters has turned out to be one of the Big Ten's top performing units. Daviyon Nixon and Zach VanValkenburg are playing at an All-Big Ten level, and returning starter Chauncey Golston and graduate transfer Jack Heflin also are having strong years. The Hawkeyes have 11 sacks through four games, one behind Indiana's Big Ten-leading total of 12. VanValkenburg transferred to Iowa from Division II Hillsdale College in Michigan and is coming off a three-sack game against Minnesota.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State's Charlie Kolar, Chase Allen and Dylan Soehner entered the season as perhaps the most celebrated group of tight ends in the country, and they still are. Those three along with reserve Easton Dean have combined for 45 catches. Only Boston College's tight ends, with 52, have more. Kolar is the 17th-ranked Cyclones' second-leading receiver with 23 receptions for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Allen has 13 catches for 173 yards and two scores. Soehner is the highest-rated tight end in run blocking, according to Pro Football Focus. Coach Matt Campbell says each tight end is playing his best football this season.

UNDATED (AP) — Two teams trying to establish some momentum meet when Nebraska hosts Illinois on Saturday. Both programs are coming off their first wins of the season. Illinois has played consecutive road games 10 of the last 12 seasons and hasn't won both since 2007. &nbsp;The Cornhuskers beat Penn State at home last week and are expected to start redshirt freshman Luke McCaffrey at quarterback again. Illinois' quarterback situation has been jumbled because of a COVID-19 outbreak. Senior Brandon Peters or redshirt freshman Isaiah Williams will get the start.

UNDATED (AP) — Austin Peay's Terry Taylor begins his senior season as the reigning Ohio Valley Conference player of the year after averaging 21.8 points and 11 rebounds in 2019-20. Taylor is one of several noteworthy players from outside the major conferences. Other mid-major or low-major players to watch include Western Kentucky's Charles Bassey, Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis, Northern Iowa's AJ Green, UTSA's Jhivvan Jackson, UNC Greensboro's Isaiah Miller and Pepperdine's Colbey Ross.&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — Commissioner Greg Sankey and the Southeastern Conference have their finish line in sight: The league championship game is set for Dec. 19 in Atlanta. The division champs might not be the only SEC teams playing that day. The SEC came into this season with a contingency plan to deal with coronavirus-related issues. While those plans have been severely tested as the pandemic has wreaked havoc, SEC officials continue adapting to navigate setbacks in their pursuit of a league title and possible national championship. Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason says the plan could be day-to-day to get to the end of the season.&nbsp;

Wolves select Edwards with No. 1 pick in delayed NBA draft

UNDATED (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Georgia freshman guard Anthony Edwards the No. 1 pick in the delayed NBA draft. Edwards became the 11th straight one-and-done player to be the top pick, coming in a year where there was no clear obvious choice. 

He averaged 19.1 points for the Bulldogs, tops among all freshman. Commissioner Adam Silver announced the pick from ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut. 

The Golden State Warriors, stung by the news that Klay Thompson sustained another leg injury earlier Wednesday, took Memphis center James Wiseman with the second pick. They stumbled to the bottom of the league while Thompson missed the entire season with a torn ACL in his left knee.

LaMelo Ball then went to the Charlotte Hornets, the next stop on a lengthy basketball journey that sent the guard from high school in California to stops as a professional in Lithuania and Australia.

The Chicago Bulls took Patrick Williams of Florida State, the ACC sixth man of the year as a freshman, at No. 4. Cleveland followed with Auburn's Isaac Okoro, another freshman, to round out the top five. 

The latter half of the top 10 featured a couple of highly regarded international players in France's Killian Hayes, taken by Detroit at No. 7, and Deni Avdija, the highest player to come from Israel when Washington picked him at No. 9.

In between, the New York Knicks took forward Obi Toppin, the national player of the year last season at Dayton. 

The draft was originally scheduled for June 25 before multiple delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic pushed it out of its usual home at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. 

—A person with knowledge of the trade says the Houston Rockets have agreed to send Trevor Ariza and the 16th pick in the NBA draft to the Detroit Pistons for a future first-round pick. 

— The Philadelphia 76ers agreed to send Al Horford and a protected future first-round pick to Oklahoma City, according to a person with knowledge of the deal. The Thunder also acquired the 17th overall pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations, for the 25th and 28th picks and point guard Ricky Rubio. 

—The Knicks acquired the No. 23 selection from Utah, sending the Nos. 27 and 38 picks to the Jazz. New York also received the draft rights to Croatian center Ante Tomic, who was taken by the Jazz in the second round in 2008 but has spent his entire career in Europe.

— In other notable picks, Precious Achiuwa was the best player in the American Athletic Conference in his lone collegiate season. The 6-foot-9 Achiuwa was taken by the Miami Heat with the No. 20 pick in Wednesday's NBA draft, giving the reigning Eastern Conference champions more frontcourt depth and athleticism. And, the Dallas Mavericks have drafted Arizona guard Josh Green with the 18th pick in the first round. The native of Australia adds a backcourt mate for Luka Doncic as Dallas continues to build around the 21-year-old sensation and fellow European star Kristaps Porzingis.

Mavs' Porzingis to miss start of season after knee surgery

DALLAS (AP) — Kristaps Porzingis will miss the start of the season as the Dallas Mavericks star continues recovery from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Porzingis injured the knee in his playoff opener against the Los Angeles Clippers.

— Golden State guard Klay Thompson has injured his leg during a workout on his own in Southern California. The team announced the injury without providing further details on the severity or any timeline for his availability with training camp starting Dec. 1 and the season beginning Dec. 22.

Mets 2B Canó suspended 162 games by MLB after drug test

NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets second baseman Robinson Canó has been suspended for 162 games by Major League Baseball after his positive test for a performance-enhancing drug. The 38-year-old Canó will miss the entire 2021 season and lose $24 million in salary.

The eight-time All-Star hit a robust .316 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in this year's pandemic-shortened season.

The commissioner's office said Wednesday that Canó tested positive for Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid.

He was penalized 80 games in May 2018 while with Seattle after a positive test for furosemide, a diuretic that some athletes have used to mask other substances.

— The World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers issued layoffs in the organization as a result of revenue losses sustained during the coronavirus pandemic. The number of layoffs and the jobs involved weren't addressed publicly by the team. The franchise called the layoffs "a heartbreaking decision." No fans were allowed at Dodger Stadium during the shortened 60-game regular season, a serious blow to a franchise that has led the majors in attendance every year since 2013.

—Looking for left-handed help in the bullpen, the Washington Nationals have reached agreement with longtime minor leaguer Sam Clay on a one-year contract. Clay reached Triple-A for the first time in his career in 2019 while also spending time in Double-A. He went a combined 4-4 with 10 saves and a 3.25 ERA and led all minor leaguers with a groundball rate of 71.3%.

New York Giants fire offensive line coach Marc Colombo

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants have fired offensive line coach Marc Colombo. Veteran line coach Dave DeGuglielmo will finish the season running the offensive line. The stunning move came as the Giants headed into a bye week with the new offensive line starting to play well.

A person with knowledge of the move told The Associated Press that Judge wanted to hire DeGuglielmo as a consultant to work with the offensive line and other parts of the team.

And according to the source, Judge told Colombo about the plans this week and the former Dallas Cowboys lineman voiced his displeasure. It ended with Colombo's firing on Wednesday.

— The NFL is placing all teams in intensive protocol starting Saturday to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 as the number of cases rises around the country. Use of masks will be mandatory at all times at team facilities, including during practice and in weight rooms. Meetings must be held either virtually or in the largest indoor space with approval by the league. Meals have to be made available for grab-and-go to avoid players and staff congregating in cafeterias. Time spent in the locker room also has to be limited. 

— The Baltimore Ravens enter Sunday's pivotal game against the Tennessee Titans with 11 players on injured reserve and several other key contributors too hurt to practice. Baltimore's offensive line is still trying to adjust to the loss of All-Pro tackle Ronnie Stanley. Defensive linemen Calais Campbell and Brandon Williams missed Wednesday's workout with injuries and there are four cornerbacks on IR. Also, Nick Boyle sustained a season-ending injury against the Patriots, leaving one tight end on the roster. The shortage of manpower will test Baltimore's depth and resilience in this rematch of last January's AFC divisional playoff. 

— The Las Vegas Raiders have placed seven more players on the COVID-19 list as "high risk" close contacts with teammate Clelin Ferrell after he tested positive for the coronavirus. Ferrell had already been placed on the list following his positive test, along with defensive back Lamarcus Joyner. Safety Johnathan Abram, defensive tackle Maliek Collins, defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins, defensive lineman David Irving, cornerback Isaiah Johnson, defensive end Arden Key and defensive tackle Kendal Vickers have been added contact tracing. The seven new players could be cleared to play Sunday against Kansas City.

— Star defensive end Myles Garrett stayed home feeling sick and the Browns placed three more players, including starting right tackle Jack Conklin and kicker Cody Parkey and dependable long snapper Charley Hughlett, on the COVID-19 list as the team prepares for this week's home game against Philadelphia. Fullback Andy Janovich and offensive lineman Chris Hubbard are already on the list after testing positive.

— The Panthers announced that running back Christian McCaffrey is not expected to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions, a big blow for a Carolina team that is trying to snap a five-game losing streak. It will be the second straight game McCaffrey has missed because of a shoulder injury and the eighth game he has missed overall this season.

— The San Francisco 49ers have claimed defensive lineman Takk McKinley off waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals and placed defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw on the COVID-19 list. The Niners tried to claim McKinley last week after he was waived by Atlanta, but the Bengals beat them out. McKinley failed his physical in Cincinnati and San Francisco ended up with him anyway. 

— Coach Vic Fangio says Drew Lock has made progress this week as he deals with bruised ribs. But the Denver Broncos' second-year quarterback wasn't able to practice Wednesday when backup Brett Rypien took his place. The Broncos host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday and Rypien would get his second career start if Lock isn't able to play. Rypien won his first start last month against the New York Jets despite throwing three interceptions. The Broncos lead the league with 16 interceptions. That includes 10 by Lock in the past four games. Lock threw four interceptions at Las Vegas last weekend. 

— Former Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones has been arrested by police in Davie, Florida, on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm. According to a police report, Jones was walking in a gas station parking lot at 4:15 a.m. with a loaded handgun protruding from his pants pocket, and said he had never had a concealed weapons permit. The report says Jones was difficult with officers and appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance. Jones played for the Dolphins from 2010-19 and twice made the Pro Bowl. He was released March 18 and has been out of the NFL since.

Dave Yanai wins John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching award

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dave Yanai, retired coach of Cal State Dominguez Hills, will receive the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching award in 2021 on April 9 in Los Angeles. Yanai was the first Japanese-American head coach at any level of college basketball. He spent 19 years at Cal State Dominguez Hills, where he is the school's all-time winningest coach with 287 victories. He guided the Toros to the 1979 NAIA Elite Eight.

— Baylor senior forward Tristan Clark is ending a once-promising career sidetracked by a knee surgery two seasons ago. Clark says he has decided to no longer play for the No. 2 Bears. Clark was the nation's leading field goal shooter at 73.7% when he sustained a season-ending left knee injury a week into Big 12 play during the 2018-19 season.

Virus sidelines four more college football teams

UNDATED (AP) — No. 24 Louisiana-Lafayette's nonconference game against Central Arkansas scheduled for Saturday has been called off because of COVID-19 concerns. The Ragin' Cajuns and Utah State at Wyoming on Thursday is also canceled. ULL is hopeful to return to practice Saturday to begin preparing for its next Sun Belt game, against Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 28. Utah State's COVID-19 cases forced the Aggies to call off their Mountain West game against the Cowboys. The number of games across all of FBS postponed or canceled is up to 12 out of 62 scheduled. Last week 15 out of 59 were called off.

— Ohio State will prohibit family and friends of players and coaches from attending football games this season because of the dramatic spike in COVID-19 cases in the state. The school has allowed a few hundred people at the first two home games, but that will end with the No. 3 Buckeyes' game at Ohio Stadium on Saturday against No. 9 Indiana. 

— Iowa State says only families and guests of athletes and staff will be allowed to attend the Cyclones' football game against Kansas State on Saturday and men's and women's basketball games through November. The marching band and spirit squad also will attend the football game. 

— The American Athletic Conference says Houston at SMU and Navy at South Florida scheduled for Saturday have been postponed because of COVID-19 issues. It's the fourth game Houston has had called off this season because of the novel coronavirus but the first to be wiped out because the Cougars were unable to play. Navy has now had three straight games postponed, though this time the opponent was the problem. The postponements raise the number of games disrupted this week by the virus across major college football to 10.

— Pac-12 teams are doing everything they can to make sure they get enough games in to legitimately be considered for a bowl. UCLA and California even got together and scheduled their own Sunday morning game at the Rose Bowl. But time is quickly running out as the league enters its third weekend with coronavirus cases spiking across the nation. Cal, Washington, Arizona and Arizona State have played just once. Five Pac-12 games have been canceled, including Colorado's meeting with the Sun Devils that was set for next Saturday.

Medvedev beats Djokovic to reach semis at ATP Finals 

LONDON (AP) — Daniil Medvedev (DAN'-ihl MEHD'-veh-dehv) secured a spot in the semifinals of the ATP Finals by dominating five-time champion Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) 6-3, 6-3 for his second straight win of the group stage.

 Medvedev lost all three of his group matches last year on his tournament debut. But he has now beaten Djokovic in three of their last four meetings. The top-ranked Serb can still advance if he beats 2018 champion Alexander Zverev in a winner-takes-all match on Friday. 

Zverev kept his tournament hopes alive with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Diego Schwartzman earlier Wednesday.

Tokyo Olympics: Many rules, no partying, no hanging around

UNDATED (AP) — Athletes at the Tokyo Olympics won't have the luxury of hanging around once they've wrapped up their event. No late-night parties or nights on the town. They will instead be encouraged to leave Japan a day or two after they've finished competing. It will make the postponed Tokyo Olympics like no other.
