A sellout crowd watched Randy Smithson score 15 points and hand out 11 assists. Jan. 6, 1988 (Wichita) | WSU, 94-72Joe Griffin set a school record that still stands with 16 assists. The previous mark, set by Warren Armstrong Jabali, had held for 20 years. Griffin's performance was remarkable in that he played just 25 minutes. Debut Redo: Shockers Host Oral Roberts Wednesday

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Kansas State returned to its defensive roots in earning its first win, as the Wildcats jumped out to a 17-0 lead and rode it to a 62-58 win over Kansas City on Monday night at Bramlage Coliseum. The Wildcats (1-2) led wire-to-wire in claiming the 19th&nbsp;win in 20 all-time meetings with Kansas City (2-2), which entered the game averaging 103.0 points after posting wins over NAIA Culver-Stockton (138-97) and Division III Greenville College (138-97) before a 71-66 loss to SE Missouri State on Saturday to start the season. K-State used its defense and energy to jump out to the 17-0 lead, holding Kansas City without a field goal for more than 8 minutes to seize the advantage. They also were 0 for 3 when it came to converting touchdowns in the red zone and that same defense also gave up more than 400 yards.

Ravens-Steelers rescheduled again by COVID-19 to Wednesday 

UNDATED (AP) — The Baltimore Ravens' struggle to contain an extended outbreak of the coronavirus forced their rescheduled game Tuesday night against the unbeaten Pittsburgh Steelers to be moved back to Wednesday. 

It's the third fix to a matchup originally slated to be played Thanksgiving night. The NFL announced the most recent switch Monday after the Ravens placed starters Matthew Judon, Willie Snead and Mark Andrews on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Although Baltimore also had four players return from that list the team will still be severely short-handed when this game is finally played.

—The 49ers will host the Buffalo Bills next Monday and Washington on Dec. 13 at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals. The team says it will have information on practice arrangements later. Santa Clara County, California, announced new rules that include a three-week ban on practices and games for contact sports starting Monday.

— Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett is on track to be activated from the COVID-19 list on Wednesday after missing two games with the virus. Garrett sat out Cleveland's wins over Philadelphia and Jacksonville the past two weeks after testing positive on Nov. 20. Garrett was leading the NFL with 9 1/2 sacks when he tested positive for the coronavirus, which has sidelined several other Browns players. 

— Cincinnati Bengals coach Zac Taylor said he expects injured quarterback Joe Burrow to have knee surgery sometime this week. Taylor said the surgery on Burrow's damaged left knee is set for midweek, but he declined to share any other details. Burrow's promising rookie season ended Nov. 22.

— Freshman RJ Davis scored 16 points and No. 14 North Carolina overcame an ugly start to beat UNLV 78-51 in the first round of the relocated Maui Invitational. Garrison Brooks added 14 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career in the first half for the Tar Heels. UNC fell behind 13-0 and didn't score for the first 6 1/2 minutes. But UNC closed the gap then ran off a 28-4 run spanning halftime to take a big lead of its own. Bryce Hamilton had 15 points to lead UNLV. 

—Courtney Ramey had the go-ahead driving score with 20 seconds left for No. 17 Texas in the opening game of the Maui Invitational. Ramey's score broke a 76-all tie, then the Longhorns (2-0) came up with a pair of stops on the final possession, when the Wildcats (1-1) had a chance to tie or win. Davidson's Sam Mennenga missed a contested 3-pointer from the wing, but the Wildcats got another shot when the ball went out of bounds with 3.8 seconds left.

The Wildcats inbounded again to Mennenga, who missed a final 3 for the win with Texas' Andrew Jones closely defending him. Mennenga turned toward the official at the horn, while Davidson coach Bob McKillop also protested slightly before leaving the court.

Ramey scored 14 points to lead the Longhorns. Jones finished with 13 points in his season debut, as did Kai Jones.

Minnesota cancels game against Northwestern

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota has canceled its game against Northwestern on Saturday, the second straight football cancellation for the Gophers because of a spike in their COVID-19 cases.

The decision was made by university officials Monday in consultation with the Big Ten. Since Nov. 19, Minnesota has had 47 positive cases, including 21 players and 26 staff members. Seven of those cases were reported on Monday.

The Gophers paused all team-related activities six days ago. They canceled their game at Wisconsin last week.

Northwestern leads the Big Ten West Division at 5-1.

Royals agree with Minor, sign Taylor to $1.75M, 1-year deal

He is 4-13 with a 4.36 ERA in 199 relief appearances and one start in five major league seasons. 

— Major League Baseball is creating a minor league for top eligible prospects leading to the summer draft. The MLB Draft League is launching with five teams and could add a sixth. The teams are in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New Jersey. Teams will use wood bats and play a 68-game regular season that includes an All-Star break coinciding with the draft in early July.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — When Tyreek Hill draws single coverage, Patrick Mahomes is going to find a way to get the ball to the Kansas City Chiefs’ most explosive receiver.

Mahomes threw for 462 yards, including touchdowns of 75, 44 and 20 yards to Hill, who finished with 13 catches for 269 yards in the reigning Super Bowl champions’ 27-24 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

“It feels good, you know, but I feel like there’s still a lot of work for me to do,” Hill said after going over 1,000 yards for the season.

“I’m always trying to get better, got to be consistent with what you do,” Hill added. “Those same people showing you love this week, you make a bad play next week, they’re going to hate you.”

Mahomes outplayed Tom Brady to win the fourth career matchup between the MVPs, completing 37 of 49 passes and holding the ball for more than 10 minutes without scoring on Kansas City’s last two possessions to put the game away.

Hill benefited from Sammy Watkins’ return to the Chiefs lineup after being sidelined since Week 5 with a hamstring injury and got the best of a matchup with Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis, who often had no help trying to contain the speedy receiver.

“We don’t get that a lot, especially with that guy and his ability,” Mahomes said. “So when we do, we try to take advantage of it.”

Hill had seven catches for 203 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter alone, joining Qadry Ismail (210 in the third quarter on Dec. 12, 1999) and Lee Evans (205 in the first quarter on Nov. 19, 2006) as the only NFL receivers since 1980 to have 200 yards worth of receptions in a single quarter.

The fifth-year pro’s last catch — an 8-yarder on third-and-7 in the final minute — gave Mahomes an opportunity to run out the clock.

“The last one, I learned a long time ago, you don’t give Tom Brady another shot,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “That’s why he’s the G.O.A.T. So, don’t give them the ball back. That was the mindset there.”

The Chiefs (10-1) won their sixth straight game and clinched their seventh 10-win season in eight years under Reid.

The defending champs improved to 6-0 on the road and have won nine straight away from home going back to last year.

“Very very few guys that I’ve seen in this league or any league that can backpedal eight, nine, 10, 11 yards in the pocket and throw a dime 25 yards down the field,” Bucs coach Bruce Arians said of Mahomes. “And he can read the defense as he does it. That makes him more explosive.”

Brady was 27 of 41 for 345 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of second-half interceptions in falling to 2-2 against Mahomes, who built an early 17-0 lead and also had the Chiefs up by 17 entering the fourth quarter.

The Bucs (7-5) made it close, with Brady throwing TD passes of 31 and 7 yards to Mike Evans, the latter trimming his team’s deficit deficit to 27-24 with 4:10 remaining.

Tampa Bay, which has lost three straight home games, never got the ball back.

“We battled back but we left ourselves a big deficit,” Brady said. “When you play a good offense we’ve got to do our job offensively and keep them off the field.”

The Chiefs led 20-7 at halftime. The Bucs were fortunate they weren’t in a bigger hole.

Kansas City ran 42 plays to Tampa Bay’s 22 in the first two quarters, outgaining the Bucs 377 yards to 131 with Mahomes throwing for 359 yards and Brady 117.

Three drives inside the Bucs 20, however, only netted a pair of short field goals. Shaquil Barrett sacked Mahomes, forcing a fumble that William Gholston recovered at the 14 with the Chiefs looking to build on a 17-0 lead.

Bashaud Breeland and Tyrann Mathieu picked off Brady. The Chiefs hurt themselves with a pair of roughing the passer penalties on the 10-play, 73-yard drive the six-time Super Bowl champion put together to close the gap to three points.

The loss comes on the heels of home defeats to New Orleans and the Los Angeles Rams, games in which Brady played poorly and left his new team searching for answers about the offense’s inconsistency.

Brady isn’t listening to critics, who feel the Bucs aren’t tailoring their scheme to what he’s done best during his career.

“Just external noise. When you’re losing that’s what you deal with,” Brady said. “I love playing with the guys, and the whole organization is unbelievable. I’ve just got to do a better job in the final four games.”

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL has fined the New Orleans Saints $500,000 and stripped them of a 2021 seventh-round draft pick for violating league COVID-19 protocols. That's according to a person with direct knowledge of the discipline who also tells The Associated Press that the Patriots have been fined $350,000 for similar violations.

The person says New Orleans was fined as a repeat offender. The Saints are expected to appeal the discipline, which ESPN first reported Sunday morning.

— The Ravens have 20 players on the COVID-19 list, the worst outbreak on any team this season. They now have three defensive linemen and one quarterback available for Tuesday night's rescheduled game at Pittsburgh.

— The 49ers might need to find a temporary new home after Santa Clara County banned all games and practices in contact sports for the next three weeks. The rules take effect Monday and will last until Dec 21. The Niners practice and play their home games in the county.

— The Jaguars have fired general manager Dave Caldwell after the team's 10th consecutive loss. The move sent a clear message that the small-market franchise is headed in a new direction. Jacksonville reached the playoffs just once in Caldwell's seven-plus seasons at the post.

Vanderbilt fires coach Derek Mason in his 7th season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Vanderbilt has fired head coach Derek Mason after losing the first eight games of his seventh season. Offensive coordinator Todd Fitch will serve as the interim coach. 

Mason became the first Vanderbilt coach since the 1920s to beat in-state rival Tennessee three straight seasons. But with the Southeastern Conference playing only league games this season, Vanderbilt is 0-8 and on the verge of the first winless season in school history.

Mason leaves as the sixth-winningest coach in program history at 27-55.

FSU-Duke replaced by Hurricanes-Blue Devils

UNDATED (AP) — The Atlantic Coast Conference has shuffled its football schedule, calling off Florida State's game at Duke on Saturday and sending Miami to play the Blue Devils instead.

The Hurricanes were scheduled to come back from a two-week pause because of COVID-19 issues at Wake Forest. But that game was postponed because of virus problems within the Demon Deacons' program.

This will be the Seminoles' third consecutive game to be called off. FSU's previous two games against Clemson and Virginia were postponed on game-day morning.

Hornets acquire Gordon Hayward, 2 draft picks from Celtics

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Boston Celtics have completed a sign-and-trade deal that sends forward Gordon Hayward to the Charlotte Hornets. 

The Celtics also shipped unprotected 2023 and 2024 second-round draft picks to Charlotte for a heavily-protected 2022 second-round selection. The Celtics will only get Charlotte's draft pick if the Hornets finish in the top five in the league next season. 

Hayward previously agreed to a four-year, $120 million deal to join the Hornets. 

UNDATED (AP) — Richmond has pulled off perhaps its most unexpected victory since knocking off Indiana in the 1988 NCAA men's basketball tournament.

Blake Francis and Nathan Cayo each scored 18 points as the Spiders surprised No. 10 Kentucky, 74-64 in Lexington. 

Richmond trailed by six at halftime and went ahead with a 9-0 burst in the second half. The Spiders later scored seven straight to go up 58-46 with 7:43 remaining.

It's the Spiders' first road victory over an Associated Press top-10 team.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Sarah Fuller was playing around with a teammate a couple months ago when she kicked a soccer ball through the uprights from 45 yards away. She joked about being able to kick a football with teammates during the Southeastern Conference soccer tournament.

Fuller became the first woman to participate in a Power Five conference football game when she kicked off for Vanderbilt to start the second half at Missouri, a moment that may take some time to soak in for her.

“I just think it’s incredible that I am able to do this, and all I want to do is be a good influence to the young girls out there because there were times like I struggled in sports,” Fuller said. “But I am so thankful I stuck with it, and it’s given me so many opportunities. I’ve met so many amazing people through sports, and I just want to say like literally you can do anything you set your mind to.”

Coach Derek Mason made clear that Fuller kicked for the Commodores due to need, not for history or publicity. COVID-19 protocols and restrictions left Mason with very few options, prompting him to reach out to the soccer team for help.

Fuller, a 6-foot-2 goalkeeper, decided she was up for the challenge.

“I’m not about making statements,” Mason said. “This was out of necessity. You look at our week. Our students had gone home. The ability to have access to students and tryouts was almost nil in terms of like what’s available. ... That just happened to be the most viable option.”

After Fuller’s kick, she went straight to the sideline, where she high-fived some of her new teammates and swapped some elbow bumps. Fuller’s parents watched and cheered from the stands along with her boyfriend and best friend.

Fuller practiced with the Commodores this week after helping the Commodores win the SEC Tournament last weekend. Fuller said her longest field goal in practice was 38 yards.

She wore “Play Like A Girl” on the back of her helmet. The senior will get to keep the No. 32 jersey she wore Saturday, the same as her number when playing soccer.

Fuller even gave a halftime pep talk, which she usually left to her soccer teammates, telling her new teammates that Vandy won the SEC soccer tournament title by cheering for each other whether on the field or the sideline.

“We had a different mindset coming out the second half,” quarterback Mike Wright said.

After her kickoff, reaction poured in on social media. Fuller was the No. 2 trending topic on Twitter, followed by Vandy. Her&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/VandySoccer/status/1332762569661100039" target="_blank">soccer team wrote on Twitter</a>: “Glass. Everywhere.”

Pat McAfee, a former NFL punter, reviewed&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/PatMcAfeeShow/status/1332761086655942657" target="_blank">Fuller’s squib kick,</a>&nbsp;noting the ball didn’t go out of bounds and there was no chance of a return, setting up the defense.

“Congrats to (at)SarahFuller_27 for being THE FIRST EVER WOMAN TO KICKOFF A POWER 5 GAME,” McAfee wrote. “Incredibly rare to be the ‘1st ever person to do something’ these days..this is really cool.”

Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz visited with Fuller before kickoff and repeated a message that Fuller has heard a lot in recent days. The father of four daughters told Fuller it was incredible they watched her make history.

“I’ve had girl dads come up to me and they’re like, ‘You’re inspiring my little girls, and I want them to know that they can do anything and you’re proving that point.’ And I think that has been the coolest thing,” Fuller said.

Fuller also made clear she’d be up for continuing to help the football team if needed. She believes she can refine her timing and technique with more practice.

Vanderbilt (0-8) visits No. 13 Georgia next week.

“If she wants to kick and she’s available, we’d love to have her,” Mason said.

Trey McGowens added 19 points and Lat Mayen and Dalano Banton 12 each with Banton grabbing nine rebounds and eight assists. BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — aley Greer scored 20 points, Myah Selland added 19 and South Dakota State defeated No. 15 Iowa 76-69 in a college women's basketball game. Greer, a graduate transfer from Colgate, had three of her four 3-pointers in the first half when the Jackrabbits took a 37-33 lead. Selland, who only played in nine games last season because of a foot injury, had 12 in the second half. UNDATED (AP) — Top-ranked Alabama had absolutely no problem winning the Iron Bowl without its head coach.

With Nick Saban sidelined by the coronavirus, Mac Jones passed for 302 yards and a career-high five touchdowns as the Crimson Tide manhandled No. 22 Auburn, 42-13.
