Shockers get back in win column against Cincinnati

College Football Playoff national championship: No. 1 Alabama (12-0) vs. No. 3 Ohio State (7-0), Monday, 8 p.m. EST (ESPN) at Miami Gardens, Florida.

The Crimson Tide will play for their sixth national championship under coach Nick Saban, 13th overall in college football’s poll era (1936-present) and first since 2017. Alabama is 2-2 in CFP championship games. A sixth title at Alabama for Saban would match Paul “Bear” Bryant’s total with the Tide, but it would give him a record seven overall. He also won a BCS title at LSU in 2003.

For Ohio State, it would be its seventh national championship of the poll era and first since 2014, the inaugural season of the playoff.

Alabama’s interior defense, led by DT Christian Barmore, vs. Ohio State interior offensive line with OG Wyatt Davis and C Josh Myers. The Crimson Tide had a couple of bad games defending the run early in the season against Mississippi and Georgia, but they have gotten much better since as Barmore’s play as improved. Davis, an All-American, and Myers have been Ohio State’s best blockers, leading the way for RB Trey Sermons’ late-season surge (636 yards in the last three games).

Ohio State: QB Justin Fields. The junior is coming off the best game of his career and maybe the best game a quarterback has had this season. Fields threw six touchdowns and had only six incomplete passes in the Sugar Bowl against Clemson. He also took a nasty hit to the side that left him aching throughout the game. Fields’ mobility is big part of his game. If he’s limited, it takes away a key weapon for the Buckeyes.

Alabama: WR DeVonta Smith. The Heisman Trophy winner has been close to unstoppable in the second half of the season and had three more touchdowns on seven catches for 130 yards against Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl. Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian gets the most out of Smith and keeps defenses guessing by lining him up wide, in the slot and often sending him in motion.

Alabama receiver Jaylen Waddle, who broke his ankle on Oct. 24, returned to practice this week for the first time. Saban said Sunday that Waddle practiced to “some degree” and whether he plays will be a game-time decision. The coach also said Tide freshman defensive back Malachi Moore is questionable to play because of an undisclosed injury. He missed the semifinal against Notre Dame. ... Jordan Bohannon had 19 points and a career-high 14 assists for the Hawkeyes, who avenged their overtime loss to the Golden Gophers on Christmas. Iowa led 39-37 at halftime and opened the second half with a 22-6 run. Garza had 10 of his points in that stretch. Minnesota rallied from a 63-45 deficit to get to within five points twice late in the second half. Both Gach and Marcus Carr scored 13 points apiece for the Gophers.&nbsp;

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Kate Cain blocked a 3-point shot with five seconds remaining and Whitney Brown followed with the clinching free throw and Nebraska upset No. 23 Michigan State 68-64. The Spartans, who went cold in the fourth quarter, pulled within 67-64 on a putback by Kendall Bostic. A quick foul sent Bella Cravens to the line where she missed two free throws. Alyza Winston's attempt to tie was blocked by Cain, allowing Nebraska to escape with a win after falling 64-62 at No. 15 Michigan on Thursday. Isabelle Bourne scored 18 points to lead the Cornhuskers. Nia Clouden led the Spartans, who dropped their second straight after falling to No. 12 Maryland 93-87, with 14.&nbsp;

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Rob Phinisee scored 18 points and Aljami Durham scored 17 and Indiana beat Nebraska 84-76. Trayce Jackson-Davis scored nine of his 15 points from the foul line and grabbed 11 rebounds and Race Thompson scored 11 for Indiana which now has won three of its last four games. Jackson-Davis' jump shot with 3:52 to go broke a 71-all tie after the lead went back-and-forth, and Indiana led the remainder. Teddy Allen scored 21 points for Nebraska, Lat Mayen scored 15 and Dalano Banton, Trey McGowens and Derrick Walker 10.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Austin Phyfe had 18 points and nine rebounds as Northern Iowa topped Bradley 78-72. Terry Nolan Jr. led the Braves with 17 points.

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Isiaih Mosley tied his career high with 29 points — scoring 26 after halftime — and Missouri State defeated Valparaiso 78-68. Mosley has scored 29 in three straight games and is the first player in the Bears Division I era to score 20 points in seven straight games, and first in overall program history since Jimmie Dull in 1977. Gaige Prim had 16 points and 10 rebounds, his third double-double in four games, for Missouri State. Ja'Monta Black added 14 points. Jacob Ognacevic had 13 points for the Crusaders. Eron Gordon added 13 points and seven rebounds. Ben Krikke had 12 points and Sheldon Edwards 10.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — David McCormack hit the clinching short hook shot with 12.8 seconds to go, giving the Kansas big man 17 points, and the sixth-ranked Jayhawks edged short-handed Oklahoma 63-59. Ochai Agbaji added 14 points and Jalen Wilson had nine points 11 boards help Kansas avoid back-to-back losses in Allen Fieldhouse for the first time since the first season under Roy Williams in 1988-89. Austin Reaves led the Sooners with 20 points and nine rebounds. Oklahoma was playing without Brady Manek and Jalen Hill because of COVID-19 protocols.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Denzel Mahoney scored a season-high 24 points to lead six players in double figures with star Marcus Zegarowski out of the lineup, and seventh-ranked Creighton pulled away early in a 97-79 victory over St. John's. The Bluejays won their sixth straight Big East game in the same season for the first time since joining the conference in 2013. The Red Storm dropped to 0-4 on the road. Zegarowski was held out because of an undisclosed injury. Creighton didn't miss a beat, with its balanced offense overshadowing Julian Champagnie's career-high 33-point performance for St. John's.

Browns stun Steelers after Saints, Ravens win

UNDATED (AP) — The task for the Cleveland Browns was simple. They had to win in a stadium where they had dropped 17 straight and do it without their head coach. Mission accomplished as the Browns built a 35-10 halftime lead before completing a 48-37 win over the Steelers in Pittsburgh. 

Baker Mayfield threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, including a screen pass that Nick Chubb turned into a 40-yard score. Chubb's TD catch halted Pittsburgh's momentum after the Steelers had pulled within 12. 

Kareem Hunt added 48 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while Cleveland's defense forced five turnovers to hand the Steelers a staggering loss. 

For the Browns, it was their first postseason victory in 26 years and their first playoff road win since December 1969.

The Browns played without first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski, Pro Bowl guard Joel Bitonio and top cornerback Denzel Ward after all tested positive for COVID-19.

The 48 points were the most the Steelers have given up in the playoffs, surpassing the 45 they gave up to Jacksonville in the 2017 playoffs.

Meanwhile, strong defense was on full display during the first two NFL playoff games on Sunday. The New Orleans Saints kept Chicago out of the end zone until the final play after the Baltimore Ravens stifled the NFL's top running back.

Drew Brees threw for two touchdowns and Alvin Kamara (kah-MAH'-rah) ran for 99 yards and a score in the Saints' 21-9 victory over the Bears. Brees tossed an 11-yard TD pass to Michael Thomas to open the scoring. He later connected with Latavius Murray for a 6-yard score late in the third quarter, shortly after the Bears committed a neutral zone infraction on fourth-and-3 at the Chicago 13. 

Brees also had his first career playoff rushing TD until replay showed he failed to cross the goal line.

Kamara capped the scoring with a one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

The Saints kept the Bears out of the end zone until Mitchell Trubisky hit Jimmy Graham for a TD as time expired.

The Ravens have advanced in the AFC playoffs by giving Lamar Jackson plenty of running room while shutting down NFL rushing leader Derrick Henry.

Jackson ran for 136 yards and a long touchdown as the Ravens rallied from an early 10-0 deficit to beat the Titans, 20-13 in Tennessee. The Baltimore quarterback tied the game late in the first half with a 48-yard scoring burst that erased a 10-3 deficit. 

Jackson also threw for 179 yards as the Ravens won for the first time in 22 games when trailing by at least 10 points.

Henry had his worst performance this season with 18 carries for 40 yards. The All-Pro ran all over the Ravens with 328 yards rushing combined in the past two meetings. 

The Titans had the ball and a chance to tie when Marcus Peters intercepted Ryan Tannehill's pass intended for Kalif Raymond with 1:50 left. 

Tannehill and the Titans were held to 209 net yards.

BOSTON (AP) — The NBA has its second postponement of the season due to COVID-19.

Sunday's game between the Boston Celtics and Miami has to be rescheduled due to concerns of exposure within the Heat roster. The Celtics already were planning to use the minimum eight players after seven were ruled out due to the league's health and safety protocols.

The Heat learned earlier Sunday that guard Avery Bradley would not be available for the game because of the COVID-19 protocols, causing the team to go through the contact tracing data. With that process still ongoing late afternoon, the decision was made to postpone the game two hours before tipoff.

UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Clippers struggled again on Sunday, one game and two days after blowing a 21-point lead in a 10-point loss to Golden State. This time, the Clippers fell behind early before posting a 130-127 win over the Chicago Bulls.

Kawhi (kah-WY') Leonard pumped in 35 points and Paul George added 28 with nine assists and seven assists. George had four points in the final minute to help the Clippers improve to 7-4.

Lou Williams contributed 21 points for Los Angeles, which trailed by nine heading into the second quarter.

The Bulls lost despite a 45-point eruption by Zach LaVine (lah-VEEN'), who also had seven rebounds and seven assists.

— The Lakers won for the sixth time in seven games as Anthony Davis had 27 points and LeBron James added 18 in a 120-102 decision over the Rockets. Davis helped the Lakers finish with 62 points in the paint during a game in which they led by as many as 27. It was a testy game that included five technical fouls, two flagrant fouls and the first-half ejections of Markieff Morris and DeMarcus Cousins. 

— The Nuggets blew out the Knicks, 114-89 as Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) provided 22 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in just 30 minutes. Gary Harris added 14 points for the Nuggets, who got only nine from star guard Jamal Murray. Denver has won four of five since a 1-4 start.

— Damion Lee canned a pair of free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining to push the Warriors past the Raptors, 106-105. Andrew Wiggins had 17 points and matched his career high with four blocked shots for Golden State, which nearly squandered away a game it led by 17. The Warriors won despite a woeful shooting performance by Stephen Curry, who shot 2 of 16 and missed nine of his 10 3s for 11 points after scoring 143 over his previous four games.

— Shea Gilgeous-Alexander poured in 31 points and Hamidou Diallo (HA'-mih-doo dee-AH'-loh) had 25 off the bench in the Thunder's 129-116 comeback win at Brooklyn. Al Horford furnished 22 points and hit three of Oklahoma City's 15 e-pointers. Kevin Durant returned from a two-game COVID absence and had 36 points for the Nets, who led by six before being outscored, 37-18 in the third quarter.

— Donovan Mitchell scored 13 of his 28 points in a decisive first quarter that carried the Jazz to a 96-86 victory over the Pistons. Mike Conley had 22 points for Utah, which went on a 17-0 run to go up by 20 through 12 minutes. Jerami Grant scored 28 points for the Pistons, who cut the deficit to six late in the third quarter.

— The Timberwolves' seven-game losing streak is over after D'Angelo Russell contributed 27 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 96-88 win over the Spurs. Russell scored eight in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer to tie the score with 7:02 left and two free throws to ice it with 31.5 seconds remaining. Malik Beasley added 24 points to help the Wolves get their first win since Dec. 26. 

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Wizards' playoff hopes have taken a major hit.

The Wizards likely will finish the rest of the season without center Thomas Bryant because of a partially torn ACL in his left knee. Bryant was injured during Saturday's loss to Miami.

Bryant is one of just two players to start the Wizards' first 10 games, averaging 14.3 points on 65% shooting while grabbing 6.1 rebounds per game.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 5 Iowa has opened Sunday's top-25 men's basketball schedule by winning a matchup of ranked teams.

Luka Garza poured in 33 points and the Hawkeyes improved to 11-2 by holding off 16th-ranked Minnesota, 86-71.

Jordan Bohannon had an outstanding all-around game, delivering 19 points, 14 assists, seven rebounds and no turnovers. Joe Wieskamp (WEES'-kamp) added 20 points to the win.

The Hawkeyes did a nice job defending Marcus Carr, who finished with 13 points. Brandon Johnson had 12 points and eight boards for the 10-4 Golden Gophers.

— Darryl Morsell (mohr-SEHL') scored 19 points and Donta Scott added 16 for Maryland in a 66-63 upset of 12th-ranked Illinois. — Tennessee and Vanderbilt have agreed to play each other on Tuesday after their scheduled games were postponed. Tennessee was supposed to be at South Carolina on Tuesday, while Vanderbilt was to face No. 13 Missouri. Those games were pushed back because of a combination of positive COVID-19 tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantining of individuals within the Missouri and South Carolina basketball programs.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — The PGA of America has cut ties to President Donald Trump by voting to take the PGA Championship event away from his Bedminster golf course in New Jersey next year.

The vote comes four days after the Trump-fueled riot at the nation's Capitol as Congress was certifying the election victory of President-elect Joe Biden. 

This is the second time in just over five years the PGA of America removed one of its events from a Trump course. It canceled the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in 2015 at Trump National Los Angeles Golf Club after Trump's disparaging remarks about Mexican immigrants. 

Canucks halt practice amid COVID concerns

UNDATED (AP) — The Vancouver Canucks have cancelled training camp practices and workouts with their NHL season set to begin on Wednesday in Edmonton.

The Canucks say the decision was made out of an abundance of caution following potential exposure to COVID-19.

Vancouver is the fourth team to have its training camp affected by COVID-19, joining the Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The governments of the five Canadian provinces where the NHL has a presence have given approval for Canadian teams to play at their home arenas this season.

VAL DI FIEMME, Italy (AP) — Jessie Diggins has won a first title for the United States in cross-country skiing's Tour de Ski. 

Diggins led the women's time standings after seven events. She placed second in the 10-kilometer final stage of the 10-day competition raced in Italy and Switzerland. 

Diggins' final time of more than three hours was 1 minute, 24 seconds ahead of Russian Yulia Stupak.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Kyler Edwards scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half as No. 18 Texas Tech built a huge lead and breezed past Iowa State 91-64. The Red Raiders used a pair of 12-0 runs to make it 54-28 with just over a minute left before the break. Mac McClung added 18 points for Texas Tech, which is 10-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12. Solomon Young and Rasir Bolton led the Cyclones with 15 points each. Iowa State is 2-7 and 0-5 in the conference.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Isaac Likekele had 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds to help Oklahoma State beat Kansas State 70-54. The Cowboys made their final 13 shots from the field beginning with Likekele's layup to give them a 41-35 lead with 13:03 left. That sparked a 13-4 run and Oklahoma State led by double digits the rest of the way, finishing the half shooting 15 of 20 from the field. Mike McGuirl scored 15 points and DaJuan Gordon had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Jordan Hamilton scored 19 points, Veronica Burton had 18 points and seven assists, and No. 22 Northwestern beat Iowa 77-67. Sydney Wood added 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Wildcats. The Hawkeyes closed within 66-60 with 7:01 left in the game. From there, Wood scored seven of Northwestern's final 11 points to help the Wildcats close it out. Monika Czinano scored a career-high 28 points on 13-of-14 shooting and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds for Iowa. Megan Meyer added 11 points and McKenna Warnock grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Rocky Kreuser had 19 points and 11 rebounds to lift North Dakota State to an 80-66 win over Omaha. Marlon Ruffin led the Mavericks with 14 points.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A.J. Plitzuweit posted 19 points and six assists as South Dakota topped Kansas City 68-62. Josiah Allick led the Roos with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

UNDATED (AP) — The Buffalo Bills were able to celebrate their first playoff win in a quarter-century. And the Los Angeles Rams advanced by knocking off a division rival on the road. And the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won a playoff game for the first time since winning the Super Bowl 18 years ago.

Josh Allen threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Bills held off the Colts, 27-24. Allen hit Stephon Diggs in the end zone with a 35-yard pass that put Buffalo ahead, 24-10 early in the fourth quarter. 

Allen ran for 54 yards on 11 carries and was 26 of 35 passing for 324 and no interceptions.

Indianapolis didn't roll over after falling behind by two touchdowns in the final period. Philip Rivers hit Pascal and Doyle for touchdowns to draw the Colts closer, and the game wasn't decided on the final play. Micah Hyde secured the win by batting down a Rivers pass in the end zone.

Buffalo is 14-3 overall following its seventh straight win.

In Seattle, Cam Akers rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown in the Rams' 30-20 win over the Seahawks.

Darious Williams returned Russell Wilson's interception 42 yards for a score while Los Angeles hounded the Seattle quarterback most of the afternoon. The best defense in the league during the regular season carried its dominance into the playoffs despite missing unanimous All-Pro tackle Aaron Donald for much of the second half. 

Donald and Leonard Floyd each had two sacks for the Rams, who allowed just 278 total yards and 11 first downs.

Jared Goff returned from a broken thumb and was 9 of 19 for 155 yards. He capped the victory with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Robert Woods with 4:46 left after Seattle's D.J. Reed fumbled a punt. 

Wilson had one of his worst playoff performances, completing just 11 of 27 for 174 yards and a pair of touchdowns to DK Metcalf.

Tom Brady threw for 381 yards in leading the Buccaneers to their first playoff victory since winning the Super Bowl in 2003, 31-23 at Washington.

Brady misfired on six of his first nine passes before finishing 22 of 40 with two touchdowns. He became the oldest quarterback to throw a playoff TD when he hit Antonio Brown from 36 yards out.

Brady engineered a 69-yard scoring drive capped by a 3-yard run by Leonard Fournette.

Washington's Taylor Heinicke ran for 46 yards and a touchdown and threw for 306 yards and a score. Heinicke was signed to Washington's practice squad just a month ago.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns finally caught a break when safety Ronnie Harrison, tight end Harrison Bryant and linebacker Malcolm Smith were activated from the COVID-19 list. All three can play in Sunday night's wild-card game at Pittsburgh.

Cornerbacks Denzel Ward and Kevin Johnson remain on the COVID-19 list and will not play. First-year coach Kevin Stefanski and Pro Bowl left guard Joel Bitonio tested positive this week and cannot take part in the game.

76ers lose without Simmons, Embiid, others

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The pandemic has caught up to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Sixers faced Denver without All-Stars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid (joh-EHL' ehm-BEED') and had the minimum eight players active as the team deals with injuries and COVID-19 concerns. Simmons and Embiid were nursing injuries, while Seth Curry and Tobias Harris sat out due to COVID.

Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 39 points on 18-of-33 shooting in his first career start, but the Nuggets took advantage of the short-handed 76ers by posting a 115-103 win at Philadelphia. Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) provided 15 points and 12 assists for Denver, while Gary Harris chipped in 21 points.

UNDATED (AP) — The Boston Celtics could be without stars Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and a number of other players because of coronavirus safety protocols when they face Miami on Sunday.

The Celtics are listing Tatum as doubtful and Brown as questionable for the rematch of the Eastern Conference finals. 

Tristan Thompson, Grant Williams and Robert Williams have already been ruled out for that reason, and the status of Semi Ojeleye and Javonte Green is unknown.

— Khris Middleton dropped in 27 points and the Bucks withstood the absence of two-time reigning MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) to beat the Cavaliers, 100-90. Bobby Portis chipped in 17 points while starting in place of Antetokounmpo, who sat out with back spasms after taking a hard fall one night earlier in a loss to Utah.

It's the seventh time in just over a month that the South Carolina men won't be able to play a scheduled game due to issues with COVID-19. 

UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Nationals are banking on outfielder Kyle Schwarber to regain his hitting streak.

The Nats and the free agent have agreed to a one-year contract worth a guaranteed $10 million. Schwarber will get $7 million this season, while the package includes a mutual $11.5 million option for 2022 or a $3 million buyout.

The 27-year-old Schwarber struggled at the plate during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, hitting .188. A year earlier, he produced 38 homers and 92 RBIs for Chicago. 

He was a member of the Cubs' drought-ending 2016 World Series championship team, hitting .412 in the Fall Classic after missing much of that season with an injured left knee.

Short-Handed K-State falls to Oklahoma State, 70-54

NEWTON, Kan.—The Hutchinson Salthawks Girls and Boys left Newton Saturday night with two wins in the pockets as both teams enjoyed victories in the makeup game played on a rare Saturday.

Mya Thompson lef the Lady Salthawks with 16 points has Hutchinson took advantage of Newton turnovers and poor shooting to put the Railers away 54-35.&nbsp; Hutchinson bounced back from the Friday night loss to Campus with Thompson and Hannah Ames scoring inside for the Salthawks.&nbsp; Ames came of the bench to score 12 in her second straight night of double digit scoring.

In the boys game Mya's brother Myles had a great 13 point first quarter to allow the Salthawks to get the quick start on Newton.&nbsp; Thompson scored 32 points to lead the Salthawks to a 79-64 win. Newton outscored Hutchinson 42-6 from 3-point range, but Hutchinson outscored Newton 48-14 from inside the arc and 25-8 from the free throw line.

“I thought we did a good job of just being steady,” Hutchinson coach Bryan Miller said. “We were handling the barrage of threes that they were making. They press a lot. They tried to play at a chaotic pace. Myles Thompson was absolutely tremendous tonight. Garrett (Robertson) did a great job. Every guy had a moment in the game where they stepped up and really helped us. We had a tough turnaround from last night (a 53-51 loss to Campus). I’m proud of our guys for their effort and focus.”

The Salthawks won their first game in AVCT League competition since 2017.&nbsp; It is also the first win for Coach Bryan Miller in his high school coaching career.

In a game with either team’s largest lead being just seven points the Jayhawks came out on top. The two teams traded leads all game as the contest featured seven ties and nine lead changes.

Kansas (10-2, 4-1 Big 12) took the lead with 2:19 left in the game off a McCormack basket and never looked back. After Kansas got a stop on defense, Jalen Wilson drilled a three. Oklahoma would cut the lead to two but on Kansas’ final offensive possession McCormack made a clutch jumper in the paint to ice the game.

Kansas shot 49% (23-of-47) from the field and 30% (6-of-20) from beyond the arc. The Jayhawks scored almost half of their points in the paint, scoring 30 from close range. McCormack led Kansas in scoring with 17 and had one fellow Jayhawk in double-figures with Agbaji’s 14. Wilson led all rebounders with 11 total rebounds.

Defensively, Kansas held Oklahoma to 38% (23-of-60) from the field, while the Jayhawks out-rebounded the Sooners, 45-32. The Sooners had one player in double-figures, Austin Reaves with 20.
