HUTCHINSON, Kan.—The Hutch High Salthawk Girls and Boys Basketball teams opened 2021 with good efforts but both teams came up short on the scoreboard as Haysville-Campus swept the Salthawks Friday night at the Salthawk Activity Center.
In the girls game, Hutch jumped out to a quick lead and lead by 8 at halftime 23-15, but the Campus Colts lady shut Hutch down in the 3rd quarter and forced seven Salthawk turnovers to come away with a 47-40 victory. Hutchinson falls to 2-1 on the season and will travel to Newton Saturday afternoon for a makeup game with the Railers at 4:30 pm Saturday.
In the Boys game, Campus showed why they are a strong contender to return to the state tournament but had hold off a strong Hutchinson surge in the 4th quarter to edge the Salthawks 53-51 in the night cap.
Hutchinson trailed at the half by 5 points behind some strong outside shooting by Treyton Peterson and Garrett Robinson. Campus pushed it to a 10 point lead at the end of the 3rd period before Garrett Robinson started launching long 3 pointers to give Hutchinson a chance at the upset late. The Salthawks had three oportunities inside of a minute to play, but turned the ball over on a five count then the Salthawks were forced to foul allowing Campus to get the win 53-51.
Garrett Robertson led Hutchinson with a 20 point effort including 6 three point goals. Peterson followed up with a 17 point effort.
Hutch will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Newton for a makeup game on Saturday with a 6pm start.
