During his freshman season at Hutchinson Community College, forward&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2020-21/bios/mayers_matt_jfk4">Matt Mayers</a>&nbsp;was just trying to figure college basketball out.

The 6-foot-7 New York State product learned his lessons well.

Mayers' sophomore season was a breakout one in leading Hutchinson back to the NJCAA Tournament. Mayers' performance in 2021 landed him on the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball All-America first team on Wednesday.

Mayers is the 13th Blue Dragon to become a first-team All-American and 34th overall All-American. He is also the seventh first-team All-American to be coached by Steve Eck, who stepped down in April.

Mayers and Cowley's Dalen Ridgnal were Jayhawk Conference first-team All-Americans. Tylor Perry of Coffeyville was a second-team All-American. Independence's Tim Dalger was an honorable mention selection.

As a freshman, Mayers played just 6.7 minutes per game with averages of 3.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Mayers dedicated himself over the off season to be in better shape and work on his skills.

When the 2021 season finally started in late January, Mayers was a changed player. He had 22 points and 11 rebounds in the season opener against Seminole State.

The great performances just kept on coming for the sophomore from Hastings-On-Hudson, New York.

When the season was completed after the second round of the NJCAA Tournament, Mayers averaged 17.8 points per game, which was sixth in the KJCCC. Mayers was third in the Jayhawk Conference in field-goal percentage at 59.6 percent and fifth in rebounding at 9.4 boards per game.

Mayers finished with 12 double-doubles this season, including a stretch of nine-straight games with a double-double.

Within that stretch of nine-straight double-doubles, Mayers had one of the best individual all-time games in Blue Dragon history when he scored fourth most points in Hutchinson single-game history (44) at Cowley on Feb. 17. That included a single-game team record 15 field goals and 14 free throws, which tied for sixth most in single-game history.

Later in the season, Mayers posted a career-high 17 rebounds against Pratt, which tied for ninth most in single-game Blue Dragon history.

Mayers was named the KJCCC Division I Player of the Week in Week No. 1 for his double-double against Seminole State on Jan. 22 and was named KJCCC Player of the Week for the second time and the NJCAA National Player of the Week on Feb. 17 after his performance against Cowley College.

Last month, Mayers was named the Jayhawk West Most Valuable Player. Mayers, in conference games, averaged 18.5 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest in helping the Blue Dragons capture the 2021 Jayhawk West title and reach the 2021 Region VI Tournament championship game.

Strong bullpen work by Nick Sandlin, Nick Wittgren and Cal Quantrill shut out the Royals over the final four innings as Cleveland rallied from a three-run deficit. Wittgren earned the win, while reliever Josh Staumont took the loss for Kansas City. Salvador Perez had the big highlight for the Royals with a homer that splashed into the fountains an estimated 460 feet from home plate.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The scheduled game between the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals was postponed because of rain. The teams will make it up Wednesday as part of a single-admission doubleheader beginning at 4:15 p.m. local time. Both games will be set for seven innings. Mets right-hander Marcus Stroman will pitch against St. Louis lefty Kwang Hyun Kim in the opener. Cardinals righty Johan Oviedo gets the ball in the nightcap, but the Mets had not announced a starter yet. Tuesday night's game was delayed at the outset and called after a 38-minute wait. &nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs used a pair of late-round picks on players with a history of medical problems but undeniable upside. In the fourth round they took defensive end Joshua Kaindoh, whose career at Florida State was interrupted first by hamstring injuries and then a significant right leg injury in 2019. In the sixth the Chiefs took Tennessee offensive linemen Trey Smith, who had blood clots in his lungs that may have been a red flag for other teams. &nbsp;If both can stay on the field, the Chiefs might have gotten the kind of steals that allow a winning team to stay on top.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Lance Leipold has gone from quite possibly the lowest rung of college football to the highest, or at least some version of it. After winning six national titles at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater and turning around Division I Buffalo, Leipold is taking on the monumental task of turning around Kansas. The Jayhawks have been to four bowl games in the past 26 years, haven't had a winning season since 2008 and have won seven conference games total over the past dozen seasons.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska finalized its 2021 football schedule with the addition of a home game against Fordham on Sept. 4. The game replaces a previously scheduled November home date with Southeastern Louisiana. Nebraska had been looking for a second September home game. Athletic director Bill Moos says it provides a better flow to the start the season and provides a valuable early-season showcase for visiting recruits. Moos said he appreciated the flexibility of Fordham and Southeastern Louisiana to make the schedule change possible. The Huskers had been scheduled to play Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 13.

Kershaw goes 1 inning in shortest start, Cubs top Dodgers

UNDATED (AP) — Clayton Kershaw lasted just one inning in the shortest start of his stellar career while Kyle Hendricks pitched a complete game for the Chicago Cubs in a 7-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opener of a split doubleheader. 

Exactly 11 years after he went just 1 1/3 innings against Milwaukee in what was his shortest start, Kershaw didn't last long in this one. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner gave up four runs and four hits. He faced nine batters in a 39-pitch inning. The Dodgers lost for the seventh time in nine games. Hendricks went seven innings in his sixth career complete game.

— Austin Meadows hit two homers and drove in a career-high five runs, and the Tampa Bay Rays capitalized on the Los Angeles Angels' fielding ineptitude for an 8-3 victory. Kevin Kiermaier added a two-run double for the defending AL champions, who moved back above .500 with their third straight win. Tampa Bay's first four runs were abetted by the Angels' first three errors in a four-error performance by the majors' worst fielding team. Meadows then hit a solo homer in the seventh inning and a three-run shot in the eighth. Mike Trout hit his eighth homer in the Angels' third straight loss.

-- Mitch Keller tossed shutout ball into the sixth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates slipped past the San Diego Padres 2-1. Keller kept the Padres off balance by mixing his pitches effectively. He allowed two hits over 5 2/3 innings and struck out five. The right-hander entered with an 8.20 ERA after his first five outings this season. Keller also got his first major league hit, a single to right field in the fifth. Four relievers combined to give up only one run in 3 1/3 innings for the Pirates. Richard Rodriguez earned his fifth save by working a scoreless ninth. 

– Kyle Lewis and Kyle Seager homered, reliever Kendall Graveman extended his scoreless streak to 18 2/3 innings and the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-2. Lewis followed Seager's go-ahead sacrifice fly that made it 2-1 with a three-run homer in the eighth. Lewis, the 2020 AL Rookie of the Year, became the 54th player in major league history to reach 20 home runs by his 90th game. He hit the milestone in game No. 88, tying Alvin Davis for the fastest in Seattle history. The Mariners have won four of six and are 10-4 following a loss.

— Dylan Cease pitched one-hit ball for six innings, struck out 11 and amazingly got three hits in his first pro plate appearances as the Chicago White Sox routed the Cincinnati Reds 9-0. It was a historic night at the plate for Cease, who doubled and singled twice before getting pulled for a pinch-hitter. Cease is the first American League pitcher since Jarrod Washburn in 2001 to have a three-hit game. 

— Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of solo homers and Brad Miller slammed a three-run shot to back Aaron Nola, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5. Nola struck out 10 and allowed one run and five hits in six gritty innings as the Phillies held on to earn consecutive wins for the first time since they started the season 4-0. 

— Xander Bogaerts (ZAN'-dur BOH'-gahrtz) hit a two-run homer, Nick Pivetta struck out eight over five innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the skidding Detroit Tigers 11-7. Alex Verdugo, Hunter Renfroe and Kiké Hernández also went deep for Boston, which led 8-2 after three innings but needed to hold off the Tigers late in a slugfest that featured 24 hits and 13 pitchers. Detroit has lost six straight and 11 of 12. 

— Adolis García hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to complete the Texas Rangers' comeback in a 6-3 win against the Minnesota Twins. García had three hits, including his seventh home run, and three RBIs. Kyle Gibson, making his first start against his former team, gave up three runs and three hits with eight strikeouts.

— Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer on the heels of Jed Lowrie's two-run double in the second to back Cole Irvin's pitching gem, and the Oakland Athletics made the early lead hold up in a 4-1 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday night. Irvin struck out a career-high nine batters while dazzling over a career-best eight scoreless innings in his first career start against the Blue Jays.

In Houston's first visit to the Bronx since their sign-stealing scam was exposed, an error by Astros third baseman Alex Bregman in the sixth inning let New York blow the game open.

— NL RBI leader Jesús Aguilar delivered a tiebreaking single in a six-run eighth inning, and the Miami Marlins beat Arizona 9-3. The score was 3-all when Miguel Rojas led off the eighth with a double against Kevin Ginkel, and Rojas came home on Aguilar's single. Corey Dickerson followed with an infield single, and catcher Stephen Vogt's throwing error allowed Aguilar to score all the way from first. Lewis Brinson added a three-run homer off Alex Young for the Marlins.

— Brandon Belt hit a go-ahead single and a grand slam in a 10-run first inning that propelled the San Francisco Giants over the Colorado Rockies 12-4 in a doubleheader opener. Belt connected for his home run on the sixth pitch after Jhoulys Chacín (joh-LEES' cha-SEEN') relieved, a 452-foot drive for his third career slam. 

— Tuesday's scheduled game in St. Louis between the New York Mets and the Cardinals was postponed because of rain. The teams will make it up Wednesday as part of a single-admission doubleheader beginning at 4:15 p.m. local time. 

— Huascar Ynoa hit a grand slam and pitched seven stress-free innings in a dominant two-way performance, leading the Atlanta Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. Ynoa blasted a fastball from Tanner Rainey 427 feet to center field in the sixth inning, extending his left arm on the follow-through like a polished slugger. It was the first grand slam by a major league pitcher since Cincinnati's Anthony DeSclafani on June 23, 2018. 

Cubs place Arrieta on 10-day IL with abrasion on right thumb

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have placed former NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta on the 10-day injured list because of an abrasion on his right thumb. 

The Cubs also placed second baseman Nico Hoerner and reliever Dan Winkler on the injured list with a strained left forearm and right triceps tendinitis, respectively. And they recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan and right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson and selected infielder Ildemaro Vargas from Triple-A Iowa. Arrieta lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings in a loss at Cincinnati on Friday. Manager David Ross said the Cubs decided to skip Arrieta's turn in the rotation after he threw a bullpen session on Monday. Adbert Alzolay will start in his place against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

— Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich is going back on the injured list just one day after getting activated. The Brewers said Yelich was returning to the IL due to the lower back strain that has bothered the 2018 NL MVP for the last three weeks. Yelich went 2 for 4 at Philadelphia on Monday in his first game since April 11. He batting .353 with a .463 on-base percentage, no homers and one RBI in just 10 games.

— Cincinnati reliever Amir Garrett has been suspended for seven games by Major League Baseball. Garrett was penalized for inciting the events in the top of the eighth inning on Saturday against the Chicago Cubs. Garrett appealed the discipline and can continue to play until the process is complete. Garrett struck out Anthony Rizzo with one out in the eighth and celebrated by punching himself in the chest several times. Garrett and the Cubs' Javier Báez yelled, and benches and bullpens emptied.

—The Washington Nationals have reinstated outfielder Juan Soto from the 10-day injured list, but last year's NL batting champion will be limited to pinch-hitting duty for now. Soto has missed 10 games with a strained left shoulder. Manager Dave Martinez says the injury no longer bothers Soto while hitting, but he isn't ready yet to play the outfield. 

— Jesús Luzardo has played video games all his life. The Oakland lefty will continue to do so with fervor, even after the embarrassment of breaking the pinkie on his pitching hand while gaming. Luzardo has apologized to his teammates and Athletics manager Bob Melvin for the accident, which occurred Saturday when he banged his hand into a table while playing a video game four hours before a start. The 23-year-old Luzardo is out indefinitely with a broken bone in his finger. He called it a "stupid" and "immature" mistake.

Bucks rally in 4th to beat Nets 124-118, clinch playoff spot

UNDATED (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 36 points and the Milwaukee Bucks used a fourth-quarter rally to beat the Brooklyn Nets for the second time in three days, winning 124-118. Milwaukee blew a 10-point lead in the second half and trailed 103-97 with 10 minutes left, but it responded with an 18-1 run to clinch a fifth straight playoff appearance. Brooklyn cut the margin to four with 1:02 left, but Antetokounmpo sank a pair of free throws and Jrue Holiday made a steal in the final minute to seal the victory. Kyrie Irving scored 38 points for the Nets, and Kevin Durant had 32. 

– Paul George and Marcus Morris scored 22 points each, and the Los Angeles Clippers rallied for a 105-100 victory over the Toronto Raptors to snap a three-game skid. Reggie Jackson added 18 points and Kawhi Leonard had 13 to help the Clippers avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season. Fred VanVleet had 27 points and 13 assists to lead Toronto in his return after missing eight games with a sore hip. Pascal Siakam added 24 points and Khem Birch added 13 points and eight rebounds.

— Lonzo Ball has led the Pelicans to a victory that helped keep New Orleans in striking distance of a postseason spot. Ball hit seven 3-pointers and capped a 33-point performance with a step-back jumper and four clutch free throws in the final 25.3 seconds to lift the Pelicans to a 108-103 victory over Golden State. Stephen Curry had 37 points but missed a deep jumper that could have given the Warriors a late lead. 

— Buddy Hield had 18 points and 11 rebounds to help the Sacramento Kings beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-99 for their third straight win. Terence Davis scored 18 points for Sacramento, and Delon Wright had 13 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. The Kings still hope to qualify for the play-in tournament by reaching the No. 10 spot in the Western Conference standings. 

— Devin Booker scored 31 points, Chris Paul had 23 and 16 assists and the Phoenix Suns stayed in step with Utah atop the Western Conference by outlasting the under-manned Cleveland Cavaliers 134-118 in overtime on for their fifth straight win. Mikal Bridges made two 3-pointers, dunked and had a block as Phoenix scored the first 15 points in OT to finally put away the Cavs, who were missing six players with injuries. 

— Tim Hardaway Jr. made 10 3-pointers and scored 36 points, Luka Doncic scored 23 points and the Dallas Mavericks moved up to the No. 5 spot in the Western Conference by topping the short-handed Miami Heat 127-113 on Tuesday night. Duncan Robinson and Goran Dragic each scored 19 for Miami, which remained No. 6 in the Eastern Conference. The Heat played without Jimmy Butler, ruled out about two hours before the game with flu-like symptoms. The team says illness is not anything related to the coronavirus.

— LaMelo Ball scored 23 points, including two free throws with 5.8 seconds left, and the Charlotte Hornets took another step toward the postseason with a 102-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Detroit trailed by two when rookie Killian Hayes was fouled with 9.4 seconds remaining, but he made just one of two free throws. Ball made his free throws at the other end, and Hayes missed a last-second 3-pointer. Hamidou Diallo scored a career-high 35 points for Detroit.

Milwaukee council OKs settlement with former Bucks player

UNDATED (AP) — The Milwaukee Common Council has approved a $750,000 settlement in a lawsuit brought by former Bucks player Sterling Brown over his 2018 arrest in which he was taken to the ground and shocked with a Taser. 

The settlement does not include an admission that Brown's constitutional rights were violated, which Brown's attorney had sought in talks with the city. Instead, it has an apology from the city and Milwaukee police that recognizes that the incident over a parking violation "escalated in an unnecessary manner and despite Mr. Brown's calm behavior." The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the agreement also requires the city to commit to changes in the police department's standard operating procedures.

— Bradley Beal, Russell Westbrook and the rest of the Washington Wizards have all worn black T-shirts with one word in white capital letters on each — "accountability," "equality" or "justice" — for their annual team photo. Beal calls it a "statement piece." He is the NBA's second-leading scorer. His shirt in the photo says "Justice." Westbrook's says "Accountability." Westbrook calls it "amazing" that the team is wearing shirts "that actually have some substantial meaning." 

— Anderson Varejão is back with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He signed a 10-day contract to begin a stint to celebrate his 12-year run with the team. The 38-year-old center hasn't played in the NBA since 2017 with Golden State. The Brazilian agreed to come back and finish this season with the injury-thinned Cavaliers, who are staggering to the finish of another losing season. Cleveland has seven players sidelined with injuries. 

Crosby scores 2 goals as Pens surge past Flyers 7-3

UNDATED (AP) — Sidney Crosby scored two goals and the Pittsburgh Penguins regained first place in the East Division with a 7-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. 

Marcus Pettersson, Jake Guentzel, Jason Zucker, Mark Friedman and John Marino also scored goals while Tristan Jarry had 30 saves for the Penguins, who moved two points ahead of idle Washington. The Capitals have two games in hand over the Penguins with one week left in the regular season.

– Leon Draisaitl scored twice and Darnell Nurse had a goal and an assist, leading the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Evan Bouchard also scored for Edmonton, which improved to 10-3-1 in its last 14 games dating to April 2. Connor McDavid had two assists and Mike Smith made 28 saves. Last-place Vancouver dropped its sixth straight game. Brock Boeser scored his 19th goal for the Canucks, and Thatcher Demko made 23 stops.

— Pavel Zacha scored his second goal of the game at 2:42 of overtime and the New Jersey Devils snapped the Boston Bruins' four-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory. Jesper Boqvist and Yegor Sharangovich scored for New Jersey, which finished its home season with a 7-18-3 record. Mackenzie Blackwood had 33 saves in winning his fourth straight game. Patrice Bergeron, 

— Andrei Svechnikov ended an eight-game goal drought by scoring twice to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3. Svechnikov also had an assist on Teuvo Teravainen's third-period goal for the Hurricanes. It was Carolina's fifth straight win and 12th straight game with at least a point. Capitals' Wilson fined $5K for roughing Rangers' Buchnevich

UNDATED (AP) — Washington's Tom Wilson has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for roughing New York Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich. The fine is the maximum allowable for the incident under the league's collective bargaining agreement with players. 

Wilson was given a double-minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct after a scrum in which he appeared to punch Buchnevich who was face down on the ice and threw Artemi Panarin down to the ice. Panarin was ruled out of the remainder of the game with what the team called a lower-body injury. This is Wilson's third fine in eight seasons.

AP source: Foot sidelines Jets' Quinnen Williams 8-10 weeks

NEW YORK (AP) — A person with knowledge of the injury told The Associated Press that New York Jets standout defensive lineman Quinnen Williams broke a bone in a foot and is expected to have surgery and be sidelined eight to 10 weeks. 

Williams was hurt last week during on-field workouts at the team's facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. NFL Network first reported Williams' injury. He is expected to miss organized team activities and minicamp but should be healthy in time for the start of training camp in late July.

— The Baltimore Ravens have signed two-time Pro Bowl tackle Alejandro Villanueva to a two-year deal. The long-time starter for the division-rival Steelers, Villanueva was not re-signed by Pittsburgh. A graduate of West Point who served in Afghanistan, Villanueva spent six seasons with the Steelers, playing in 96 games with 90 starts. He has the second-longest active streak among NFL tackles with 96 consecutive games players and has started every game over the past five seasons. 

— The Browns bulked up their defensive line by signing veteran tackle Damion Square. Square spent the past seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 32-year-old hasn't missed a game the past four years. Cleveland's interior was getting thin following the departure of Larry Ogunjobi as a free agent and Sheldon Richardson's release in a salary-cap move. 

ELMONT, N.Y. (AP) — The Belmont Stakes will limit attendance to 11,000 spectators for the third leg of horse racing's Triple Crown series.

NYRA says that required mandatory seating and social distancing will limit tickets to reserved seats and hospitality areas. All fans must submit proof of completed vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to get in.

The Preakness Stakes on May 15 is limiting attendance to 10,000. The Kentucky Derby had attendance of 51,838 last weekend. Another of horse racing's major events will have spectators, too. Tickets for the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar will go on sale July 16. Organizers say fans will be welcomed back for the Nov. 5-6 event at the track north of San Diego, although they did not specify whether attendance would be limited. They said attendance would be dictated by state and local health and safety guidelines.

Last year's event at Keeneland in Kentucky also was held without fans because of the global pandemic.

Tom Hackimer pitched two innings to earn the win and Yennier Cano worked a scoreless ninth inning for the save. Wichita defeated Springfield 2-0 for its first win in franchise history. Four Wind Surge pitchers delivered a shutout, punching out 14 Cardinals in the win.

Josh Winder started and worked four and two third innings and six strikeouts. The Wind Surge defense picked up an outfield assist in the seventh to keep the game scoreless and had a pair of caught stealing’s.

Royals drop another to Indians 7-3 Tuesday

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright came off the COVID-19 injured list and hung tough, St. Louis got a lights-out performance from its bullpen and the Cardinals beat the New York Mets 6-5 for their fifth straight win. After the game, the Mets fired hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater. New York has struggled badly with runners in scoring position this season. The Cardinals were clinging to a one-run lead in the ninth with two outs and a runner on base when the lights at Busch Stadium flickered, then went out for a moment. When play resumed, reliever Alex Reyes walked Pete Alonso before retiring Smith on a flyball for the final out.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eddie Rosario hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning that sent the Cleveland Indians to an 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals. Josh Naylor added a two-run shot off Royals reliever Jakob Junis two batters after Rosario during what became a five-run inning. Bryan Shaw got the win in relief of Indians starter Aaron Civale. Emmanuel Clase handled the ninth for his sixth save and has yet to allow an earned run in 13 1/3 innings this season. Whit Merrifield and Hunter Dozier had two-run homers for Kansas City.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Robert Bortuzzo got his first goal of the season and Brayden Schenn also scored, leading the St. Louis Blues to a 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. &nbsp;The Blues have won six of their last eight games at home. The win puts St. Louis five points ahead of the Arizona Coyotes for the final playoff spot in the West Division. Arizona has played three more games than St. Louis. Jordan Binnington earned his 70th career win, becoming the 10th goaltender in Blues history to reach the mark. &nbsp;

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky guard Davion Mintz will enter the NBA draft but has left open options for him to possibly return to school. The 6-foot-3 graduate transfer from Creighton is Kentucky's fifth player to enter the draft. Mintz averaged team highs of 11.5 points and 3.1 assists per game last season along with 3.2 rebounds and 56 3-pointers. He believes it's in his best interest to submit his name to "test the waters and go through a proper evaluation period."

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have the best record in baseball — and an identity that should be pretty familiar by now. The Royals are still trying to beat teams on the basepaths. Whit Merrifield already has eight stolen bases, tied for the major league lead. As a team, Kansas City has 22 steals. Only San Diego has more. That's despite the fact that Adalberto Mondesi, last year's major league leader in steals, hasn't played for the Royals in 2021 because of an oblique injury.

UNDATED (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers have stretched their lead in the NBA's Eastern Conference to one game over Brooklyn by knocking off the Bulls in Chicago.

Tobias Harris scored 21 points and Seth Curry added 20 as the Sixers earned their fifth win in a row, 106-94. 

Philadelphia led by as many as 23 points in the third quarter and by 20 to start the fourth. But Chicago went on a 24-5 run to get within 88-87 midway through the final period before the 76ers embarked on a 12-4 run.

Every Sixers starter scored in double figures as Ben Simmons scored 15 points, Danny Green had 14 and a relatively quiet Joel Embiid scored 13.

Over in the Western Conference, the Jazz lead by a half-game over the Suns after Bojan (BOY'-ahn) Bogdanovic scored 25 points to lead Utah's 110-99 win against the Spurs. Rudy Gobert (goh-BEHR') chipped in 24 points and 15 rebounds for the Jazz, who scored 22 points off 13 San Antonio turnovers and shot 50% from the field while leading wire to wire. 

Jordan Clarkson added 16 points and Joe Ingles provided 13 with eight assists in Utah's second straight win.

— Anthony Davis scored 25 points and had key plays on both ends of the floor in the final minute of the Lakers' 91-87 triumph over the Nuggets. Davis hit a jumper with 41.8 seconds remaining to give the Lakers a four-point lead before he blocked a 3-point attempt to help Los Angeles halt a three-game skid. Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH'-lah YOH'-kihch) led the Nuggets with 32 points and Michael Porter Jr. added 19.

— Julius Randle scored 28 points and Derrick Rose added 25 on 11 of 15 shooting in the Knicks' 12th win in their last 13 games, 118-104 at Memphis. RJ Barrett added 15 points for New York, which guaranteed itself a winning season for the first time in eight years. The Grizzlies received five technicals in a span of 18 seconds to seal the loss.

— Danilo Gallinari (gah-lih-NAH'-ree) nailed seven 3-pointers on his way to 28 points, leading the Hawks to a 123-114 victory over the Trail Blazers. Bogdan (BAHG'-dahn) Bogdanovic provided the bulk of Atlanta's offense over the first two quarters, scoring 23 of his 25 points for the second highest-scoring half of his career. He also made seven 3s as Atlanta dropped Portland to 4-1 on its six-game road trip.

— Russell Westbrook produced an impressive triple-double in a 154-141 win over the Pacers. Westbrook had 14 points to go along with his career-high 21 rebounds and career-high-tying 24 assists, his league-leading 32nd triple-double of the season. Wilt Chamberlain is the only other player in NBA history 20-plus rebounds and 20-plus assists, doing it twice.

— Stephen Curry poured in 41 points and Draymond Green registered a triple-double in the Warriors' 123-108 downing of the Pelicans. Green had 10 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds to help Golden State move four games ahead of New Orleans for the 10th and final Western Conference playoff slot. Andrew Wiggins added 26 points for Golden State, with 10 coming in a key stretch early in the fourth quarter.

— Mo Bamba had career highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds as the Magic downed the Pistons, 119-112. Chasson Randle added 18 points to the win.

CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the decisions says center Anderson Varejão (VAR'-eh-zhow) is expected to sign with the Cavaliers for the remainder of the season after the NBA granted the team a roster hardship exception. 

Varejão spent 12 seasons with Cleveland before he was traded in 2016. The 38-year-old's return would be little more than a ceremonial move by the Cavaliers, who want to honor and celebrate Varejão for his time with the team.

UNDATED (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes remain the leaders in the NHL's Central Division, with an eye on the Presidents' Trophy as the league's top team in the regular season.

Sebastian Aho (AH'-hoh) scored twice in the second period on the way to a hat trick in the Hurricanes' fourth straight victory, 5-2 over the Blackhawks.

Dougie Hamilton and Martin Necas (mahr-TEEN' NAY'-chas) also scored while the Canes were building a 4-0 lead. Aho capped his night by beating Patrick Kane to a puck and scoring an empty-netter at 18:44.

The Hurricanes continue to lead the Central Division and overall standings by two points over Florida.

The Panthers kept pace as Aleksander Barkov scored 2:50 into overtime to give them a 5-4 victory over the Stars. Jonathan Huberdeau, Nikita Gusev, Gustav Forsling and MacKenzie Weegar also scored for the Cats, who blew a two-goal lead before winning.

The Stars trailed 4-2 in the third until Joel Kiviranta (joh-EHL' kih-vih-RAHN'-tah) and Tyler Seguin (SAY'-gihn) scored 11 seconds apart. It was Seguin's season debut following hip surgery in November.

— The Wild scored three times in the final 9 1 2/minutes to turn a 5-3 deficit into a 6-5 win over the Golden Knights. Jonas Brodin (broh-DEEN') scored with 1:06 left, 26 seconds after Kirill Kaprizov (kah-REEL' kah-PREE'-zahf) had tied the game. Nick Bonino added two goals and an assist as Minnesota beat the Knights for the fifth time in seven meetings this season.

— Andre Burakovsky (bur-ah-KAHV'-skee) scored 41 seconds into overtime and the Avalanche pulled within two points of the West-leading Knights by outlasting the Sharks, 5-4. Colorado scored three times in the third period to overcome a pair of two-goal deficits. Nazim Kadri (NAH-zehm KA'-dree) provided the tying tally with 3:39 left in regulation.

— Robert Bortuzzo got his first goal of the season and Brayden Schenn also scored, leading the Blues to a 3-1 victory over the Ducks. Bortuzzo gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead at 2:13 of the third period. Jordan Binnington had 19 saves to earn his 70th career win.

— Daniel Sprong's tiebreaking goal in the third period propelled the Capitals to a 6-3 victory over the Rangers. Sprong put the Capitals ahead 4-3 at 4:37 of the third before Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson added insurance tallies. Nic Dowd, Conor Sheary and Garnet Hathaway also scored as the Caps snapped a two-game skid.

— The Penguins' 7-2 loss to the Flyers leaves Pittsburgh in a first-place tie with Washington in the East Division. Claude Giroux had two goals and an assist to help Philadelphia end a three-game skid and win for just the sixth time in its last 16 games. Evgeni Malkin returned to the lineup for Pittsburgh after missing 23 games with a lower body injury.

— Patrice Bergeron (pah-TREES' BEHR'-zhuh-rahn) scored his 20th goal of the season and the Bruins clinched their fifth straight playoff berth with a dominating 3-0 victory over the Devils. Nick Ritchie broke a scoreless tie in the second period as the Bruins won their fourth straight game and ended the Devils' three-game winning streak. — The Bruins moved into third in the East when the Islanders blew a 2-0 lead in a 4-2 loss to the Sabres. Michael Houser stopped 34 shots in his NHL debut, blanking New York after Adam Pelech (PEH'-lek) and Oliver Wahlstrom beat him. Sam Reinhart scored twice in Buffalo's three-goal third period, helping the Sabres beat the Isles for the first time in seven meetings this season.

— The Predators tightened their hold on the final Central Division playoff berth by getting a goal from Roman Josi (YOH'-see) at 3:24 of overtime to complete a 4-3 win over the Blue Jackets. Filip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen each had a goal and an assist, and Juuse Saros had 30 saves as Nashville moved four points ahead of fifth-place Dallas. — Anze Kopitar (AHN'-zhay KOH'-pih-tahr) is one point shy of 1,000 for his career after contributing a goal and an assist to the Kings' 3-2 downing of the Coyotes. Arizona has dropped 11 of its last 14 and is five points behind St. Louis for the West Division's final playoff spot with three games remaining.

UNDATED (AP) — Pittsburgh's Tyler Anderson made a bid for the third no-hitter of the major league season, but it was the San Diego Padres who came away with a shutout win.

Wil Myers singled with no outs in the seventh to end Tyler Anderson's no-hit bid and ignite a two-run inning that pushed the Padres past the Pirates, 2-0. After Myers' hit, Tommy Pham hit a sacrifice fly and Austin Nola poked an RBI single with two out to chase Anderson and send Pittsburgh to its fifth loss in a row.

— Vince Velasquez allowed one run and four hits, striking out six in his longest outing this season to lead the Phillies past the Brewers, 4-3. J.T. Realmuto (ree-al-MOO'-toh) slammed a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Phils ahead, 2-1.

— Nolan Arenado (ar-eh-NAH'-doh) and Harrison Bader homered to support Adam Wainwright in the Cardinals' 6-5 victory against the Mets. Wainright fell behind 5-2 but lasted 5 2/3 innings in his first start since coming off the COVID-19 list.

— Willy Adames (ah-DAH'-mehs) and Manuel Margot (mahn-WEHL' mahr-GOH') homered and Mike Brosseau had a two-run single as the Rays knocked off the Angels, 7-3 to begin a seven-game road trip. Tyler Glasnow (GLAS'-noh) pitched six innings of four-hit ball with three walks for the defending AL champion Rays.

— The Athletics knocked off the Blue Jays, 5-4 as Ramon Laureano homered for the third consecutive day. Stephen Piscotty (pihs-KAH'-tee) also went deep and Jed Lowrie went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles as Oakland spoiled Marcus Semien's return to the Bay Area.

— Cedric Mullins and Freddy Galvis (GAL'-vees) each hit two-run homers while the Orioles put together a five-run eighth to beat the Mariners, 5-3. Dean Kremer had arguably the best start of his young career, throwing six innings for Baltimore and allowing just two hits and one run in a no-decision.

— Kenta Maeda (mah-EH'-dah) had a season-high eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings, allowing only two singles and two walks in the Twins' 6-5 win over the Rangers. Jorge Polanco had an RBI triple and run-scoring double, while rookie Alex Kirilloff kept up his torrid start with two doubles for Minnesota.

— Eddie Rosario swatted a tiebreaking, three-run homer that sent the Indians to an 8-6 win over the Royals. Josh Naylor added a two-run shot two batters later and Emmanuel Clase worked around a single in the ninth for his sixth save.

— The Dodgers and Cubs were postponed in Chicago due to bad weather, as was the Giants-Rockies game in Colorado. Both games are rescheduled as part of Tuesday twinbills.

UNDATED (AP) — White Sox center fielder Luis Robert could miss the remainder of the season because of a torn right hip flexor.

Robert was injured in Sunday's loss to Cleveland. He fell to the ground after beating out an infield single to third base in the first inning and was helped off the field while putting no weight on his right leg. 

Robert is batting .316 with one homer and 11 RBIs this year. He finished second in the 2020 AL Rookie of the Year voting and was a Gold Glove winner last season.

— The Indians have reinstated designated hitter Franmil (FRAHN'-meel) Reyes from the paternity list and promoted outfielder Harold Ramirez from the taxi squad before tonight's series opener against the Royals. Reyes and his wife, Marian, welcomed their fifth child last week. He's off to a fast start this season, hitting .279 with seven homers and 18 RBIs through 23 games.

— Marlins rookie right-hander Paul Campbell has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for an anabolic steroid in violation of Major League Baseball's drug program. Campbell said he never knowingly ingested the substance or had even heard of it. The 25-year-old Campbell made his major league debut this season and is 0-2 with an 8.74 ERA in five games and 11 1/3 innings. 

— The Rockies have appointed Bill Schmidt as their interim general manager after parting ways with Jeff Bridich (BRY'-dihch). Schmidt has been with the team for nearly 22 years and has been in his current role of vice president of scouting since January 2007. Schmidt will be in charge of the team's baseball operations. 

— Baseball Hall of Fame Chairman Jane Forbes Clark says the museum has accepted Roberto Alomar's resignation from its board of directors. The Hall of Fame second baseman was fired last week as a consultant by Major League Baseball and placed on the league's ineligible list after an investigation into the allegation. 

Bobby Unser, 87, Indy 500 champ in great racing family, dies

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A racing icon has passed. Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Unser died of natural causes at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Sunday. 

Unser won the Indy 500 in 1968, 1975 and 1981. His younger brother, Al, is one of only three four-time Indy 500 winners in race history. The Unser family tradition stretched to Al Unser's son, Al Unser Jr., who won the Indy 500 in 1992 and 1994. 

Bobby Unser was one of just 10 drivers to win the 500 at least three times. Unser and Rick Mears are the only drivers to win the 500 in three different decades. Unser was one of six members of the Unser family to race in the Indianapolis 500. Bobby Unser was 87 years old.

Amazon to take over "Thursday Night Football" package in '22

UNDATED (AP) — Amazon Prime Video will become the exclusive home of the NFL's "Thursday Night Football" package a year earlier than originally anticipated. The 11-year package begins in 2022.

This is the first time a streaming service has had the full rights to an NFL package. Prime Video will carry 15 regular-season games on Thursday night along with one preseason game. 

Bills pick up Allen, Edmunds 5th-year contract options

UNDATED (AP) — Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds are staying around for at least two more seasons. The Bills exercised the fifth-year options of both players' contracts and retained the 2018 first-round draft picks through the 2022 season. The move comes at a combined price of about $36 million, with Allen set to make nearly $23 million in his final year. 

— The Falcons have picked up receiver Calvin Ridley's fifth-year option, meaning he will make $11.1 million in 2022 and be in line for a long-term deal. Ridley had 90 catches for 1,374 yards and nine touchdowns last season. 

— Jaguars defensive tackle Taven Bryan, Vikings cornerback Mike Hughes and Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch have been declined a fifth-year option on their rookie contracts. NFL teams had until Monday to decide whether to exercise fifth-year options on 2018 first-round picks.

— Colts tight end Mo Alie-Cox has signed his restricted free agent tender worth almost $3.4 million this year. Alie-Cox was signed by the Colts as an undrafted rookie in 2017 following his basketball career at VCU. He's played in 40 games over the past three seasons and posted his best stats in 2020 with 31 receptions and 394 yards. 

— Veteran left tackle Charles Leno Jr. Leno says on Twitter that his "time in Chicago has officially come to an end" and calls it "a bittersweet day." He said he will "be rooting for the young guys to succeed" and thanked Bears fans. US appeals court to consider Idaho transgender athletes ban

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An appeals court will consider the constitutionality of the first law in the nation banning transgender women and girls from playing on women's sports team. 

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is scheduled to hear arguments Monday in a case that will have far-ranging consequences as more states follow conservative Idaho's lead. Idaho passed its law last year, and more than 20 states have considered such proposals this year.

Jeffrey Neill was the winner on the mound in game one, a 16-4 triumph.&nbsp;

Taiden Hawkinson was the winning pitcher in game two, a 9-2 Buhler win.

The Crusaders are 13-3 on the year. They are home against El Dorado at Wheatland Park on Thursday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Eddie Rosario hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning that sent the Cleveland Indians to an 8-6 win over the Kansas City Royals. 

Josh Naylor added a two-run shot off Royals reliever Jakob Junis two batters after Rosario during what became a five-run inning. Bryan Shaw got the win in relief of Indians starter Aaron Civale. Emmanuel Clase handled the ninth for his sixth save and has yet to allow an earned run in 13 1/3 innings this season. 

Whit Merrifield and Hunter Dozier had two-run homers for Kansas City.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State defensive end&nbsp;Wyatt Hubert&nbsp;saw his NFL dream come true on Saturday afternoon as he was selected in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hubert, who was chosen with the seventh pick of the seventh round (No. 235 overall), is the fifth Wildcat all-time to be selected by Cincinnati. The last was another defensive end when&nbsp;Jordan Willis, who is currently with the San Francisco 49ers, was taken by the Bengals in the 2017 draft.

A two-time First Team All-Big 12 defender, Hubert started 29 career games for the Wildcats and tied for eighth in school history with 20.0 career sacks. Hubert, who earned votes for the Big 12 Defensive Player and Defensive Lineman of the Year awards each of the last two seasons, was ranked seventh in the nation among active players in career sacks per game (0.59) and 10th in tackles for loss per game (1.00) following the 2020 season.

Hubert, a native of Topeka, Kansas, started every in 2020, totaling 27 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks, the latter two being career highs despite K-State playing in a COVID-shortened 10 games. He was the only Big 12 defender to be a unanimous selection to the first team.

With the conclusion of the draft on Saturday, former Wildcat football players can begin to sign undrafted free agent contracts with NFL teams. Those will be announced after being made official by those respective franchises.
