Kan. — Four Hutchinson Community College volleyball players reached double figures in kills as the Blue Dragons improved to 2-0 in the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic with a four-set victory over the Jefferson Vikings on Friday night at the Sports Arena.

Led by freshman Blondie Penaflor, the Blue Dragons hit .273 as a team in a 25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16 win in the second match of the day for Hutchinson. Earlier on Friday, the Dragons swept Trinity Valley. The Dragons improved to 9-6 overall. Hutchinson has two matches in the Classic on Saturday – No. 8-ranked Missouri State-West Plains at 10 a.m. and Laramie County at 2 p.m.

Penaflor had eight of her team-high 16 kills in the fourth set to lead the Blue Dragons. Hutchinson won the first two sets, but dropped the third and trailed 2-0 in the fourth before Penaflor started her big fourth set with three consecutive kills to give Hutch an early lead. Penaflor added two total blocks, including a solo block.

Freshman setter Andrea Serrano set a balanced offensive attack as four players reached double figures in kills for the first time this season. Serrano had 48 assists and posted a double-double with 12 digs.

Freshman Sophie Connor had 11 kills, while sophomore Kristina Head and freshman Morgan Harvey had 10 kills each. The Dragons had 57 total kills and 19 attack errors.

Freshman libero Amanda Velez had 15 digs, while Connor had nine.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons sided out on 14 of 15 chances in the opening set, allowing only one two-point run to the Vikings. Six different Dragons registered kills led by Head, who had four kills and three total blocks in the opening set. A Connor kill capped a 5-0 Dragon run that built an 8-4 lead. Harvey and Head teamed up for a double block to make it 15-8 and another Head kill made it 19-10. Hutch reached a 10-point lead on a Zoe Schmidt-Penaflor double block at 24-14. Two points later, the Vikings had a service error on set point No. 2 for a 25-15 Hutch win.

&nbsp;SET 2: Connor and Penaflor combined for nine of Hutchinson’s 15 kills in the second half. The second half was much closer as Hutchinson’s sideout percentage slipped from 93 percent to 63 percent. Tied at 10-all, a Connor kill started a 4-1 Hutch run. Harvey nailed a cross-court kill for a 14-11 lead. Jefferson answered back with a 4-1 run to knot the set at 15-15. Tied at 16-all, two Head kills and a Connor kill gave the Dragons a 19-6 lead. Leading 22-18, Jefferson tied the set at 23-all with three Dragon attack errors aiding the comeback. Schmidt got a key sideout with a kill out of the middle to make it 24-23 and Penaflor tooled the block on set point for a 25-23 win and a two-set match lead.

SET 3: Hutchinson’s sideout percentage dwindled in the third set to 54 percent. Jefferson jumped out to a 12-5 lead and later led 16-9, forcing the Dragons to burn their second timeout. Hutchinson went on a 6-1 run out of the timeout and pulled within two points after a Harvey solo block cut the Jefferson lead to 17-15. Two points was as close as the Dragons could come in the third set, doing so on seven different occasions after trailing 16-9.

SET 4: Trailing 2-0, Penaflor picked up the Blue Dragons and immediately grabbed momentum from the Vikings. Three-straight kills by Penaflor erased that early deficit and gave Hutch a 3-2 lead. Two more Penaflor kills broke ties at 4-all and 5-all. Leading 7-6, Harvey delivered a kill which sparked an eight-point Amanda Velez service run. Head and Connor teamed up for a stuff block to give Hutch a 15-6 lead. That lead grew to 21-9 as Penaflor had two kills and a solo block on consecutive Dragon points. Jefferson scored on 7 of the next 9 rallies, but a Connor kill and Viking attack error on the final two points gave the Blue Dragons a decisive 25-16 win.

Dragons move to 2-0 in Classic with 4-set win over Jefferson

—&nbsp;The duo of Cole Sands and Kody Funderburk limited the Arkansas Traveler offense to just one run to led Wichita to a 2-1 game four victory at Riverfront Stadium Friday night.

The Wind Surge offense did not need to do much tonight, but they picked up the runs they needed to win game four. The scoring started off in the bottom of the second inning. Leobaldo Cabrera led off the inning with a double down the left field line to set himself in scoring position. The next batter, Jermaine Palacios, ripped the first pitch he saw right back up the middle to score Cabrera from second and put the first run on the board for Wichita.

The Surge added the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. In just the third pitch of the inning, Ernie De La Trinidad came up clutch again with his ninth home run of the season. De La Trinidad blasted this one 401 feet over the left center field wall to put the Surge ahead 2-0.

The Travelers did not go away easily in the top of the ninth. Zach DeLoach led off the inning with a double to left field to put the tying run at the plate. A couple batters later, DeLoach scored on an infield single combined with an error to plate the first run for Arkansas. Jordan Cowan continued the two-out rally with a single to move the tying run to second and the go-ahead run on first. Kody Funderburk buckled down and struck out Jose Caballero to end the threat and seal a 2-1 victory for Wichita.

Cole Sands shutout the Travelers in his 18th start of the year. Sands threw 5.0 innings, allowed no runs on just three hits, and struck out four. Kody Funderburk earned his third save of the year with 4.0 innings of relief. Funderburk allowed one run on three hits and struck out five on the night.

The Hutchinson Community College Volleyball squad snapped a four-match losing streak to open the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons, in the process, had their slumbering offense come back to life with .280 hitting in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 victory over the Trinity Valley Cardinals in their opening match of the tournament.

Hutchinson avenged a four-set loss to Trinity Valley just six days earlier at the Butler Invitational in El Dorado. The Blue Dragons improved to 8-6 overall. Later on Friday, Trinity Valley knocked off No. 8 Missouri State-West Plains in four sets.

The Blue Dragons snapped a five-match streak hitting less than .200 as a team was a 42-kill performance and only 18 attack errors.

Freshman Blondie Penaflor led the resurgent Hutchinson offense with 10 kills and two total blocks. Freshman Sophie Connor and sophomore Zoe Schmidt had nine kills each. Connor also had 10 digs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Freshman Morgan Harvey had six kills and sophomore Kristina Head had five kills.

Setter Andrea Serrano tallied 37 assists.

Trinity Valley again tried to come back and got within 19-16. A Penaflor kill, Rachel Easom ace and Head kill on a Cardinals over-pass bumped the lead back to six at 22-16. Trinity Valley scored on 5 of the final 8 rallies, but the Dragons closed out the set with a Schmidt kill for a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead. Penaflor had five kills and Schmidt had four kills in the set.

SET 3: The Dragons led 9-5, but Trinity Valley ran four unanswered points to knot the set. The set belonged to Hutchinson after that. A Penaflor-Schmidt double block capped a 4-0 run for a 13-9 lead. Back-to-back Velez aces made it 17-10. Harvey served up an ace for a 19-11 lead and Connor terminated again for a 22-13 lead. The match ended on a Cardinal attack error.

Dragons sweep Trinity Valley to snap skid

The Baltimore quarterback is 30-5 as a starter in the regular season against everybody else. The Ravens will be at home for Sunday night’s game, but Kansas City won 34-20 at Baltimore last year, and the Chiefs have 11 straight regular-season road victories overall. 

The Ravens are trying to avoid an 0-2 start after losing their opener for the first time since 2015.

The Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau announced Friday Hays has been selected as the site for the 50th&nbsp;Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl on July 15, 2023.

The Kansas Shrine Bowl is a nonprofit charity that works to raise funds and awareness for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Since 1974 these prestigious high school football all-star games have raised over $3 million.

The event routinely brings 6,000 to 8,000 visitors to the host community. It is expected the 50th&nbsp;could draw even more of a crowd.

“We are excited our event will be returning to the Hays community for this very special game,” said Kansas Shrine Bowl Executive Director B.J. Harris in a news release. “Hays has proven to be a great host for us in the past, and we’re confident it will be the perfect backdrop for our 50th&nbsp;game.”

Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau staff prepared a bid for the 50th event, which included a lengthy application, pledges for partnerships, and, in the final selection round, an in-person pitch, which was presented by Janet Kuhn, Hays CVB convention and sales manager. Kuhn helped bring the Kansas Shrine Bowl to Hays in 2007, 2011 and 2015.

“Our community partners — from Fort Hays State University, local law enforcement, and our lodging properties, to the Ellis County Fair Board and local Shriners — all work together to make Hays a welcoming destination time and time again,” Kuhn said in a news release.

As the host community, Hays will partner to coordinate other events that accompany the Kansas Shrine Bowl, including a parade, band camp, cheerleading clinic, cross country event, golf tournament and banquet for 1,200 Shriners, participants and fans.

"I am just very, very thrilled to have the Shriners choose Hays," Hays Mayor Sandy Jacobs said during a press conference Friday morning. "We work every day to ensure we have a very good environment for activities such as this.&nbsp; 

"We have over 1,000 hotel rooms. We have over 65 restaurants. Our facilities are second to none. We are just thrilled to have you back.

Hosting the Shrine Bowl is about the commerce it brings to Hays, but Jacobs said it is also about the money the event raises for children's hospitals.&nbsp;

Curtis Hammeke, FHSU athletics director, said the Shrine Bowl is a great showcase of student athletes from across the state.

"More importantly, it's a great, great contributor to the Shriner hospitals and the mission of this program is something we all think very highly of and that's taking care of the kids."

WICHITA, KS – The Wind Surge earned a trip to the 2021 postseason with a 3-2 comeback win over the Arkansas Travelers Thursday at Riverfront Stadium. The Wind Surge will wait to find out who exactly they play and who is the one seed, but for now Wichita will host playoff baseball.

Game three featured a pitching battle between Chris Vallimont and Matt Brash. Both kept the opposing team scoreless for five innings. In the top of the sixth, the Travs broke through with a solo home run from Jack Larsen. That one mistake was all Chris Vallimont gave up in his start and he kept his team in the game after he exited the mound. The Wind Surge backed up Vallimont’s start by taxing Matt Brash in the bottom half of the sixth. Before the inning, the Surge only mustered three hits through five innings. Wichita finally got to Brash, plating three runs in the frame. After back-to-back singles from Trey Cabbage and Jermaine Palacios and a walk from Andrew Bechtold, the bases were loaded for the Wind Surge with just one out. A couple batters later, Ernie De La Trinidad provided the clutch hit Wichita was looking for. On a 3-2 count, De La Trinidad won the battle against Brash with a single to right field to score Cabbage and Palacios, driving in his 36th and 37th RBIs of the year.

With runners on the corners after the De La Trinidad single, Arkansas’ Jake Anchia committed another error. With De La Trinidad caught in no mans after a pitch, Anchia tried to pick off De La Trinidad at second, but instead one-hopped the ball into center field. Bechtold was able to score on the error and the Wind Surge were on top 3-1 with three frames to go.

The Travs scored once in the top of the ninth, and had the tying run at first base, but Adam Lau managed to record a fly out to end the threat and clinch a playoff spot for the Wichita Wind Surge.

Chris Vallimont was terrific in his 21st start of the season. Vallimont threw 5.2 innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out four on the start. Erik Manoah stepped up big tonight and picked up his first win for the Surge. Manoah threw 2.1 innings and gave up just one hit while striking out four in his appearance. Recently activated off the inactive list, Adam Lau earned his first save by pitching the ninth and closing out a big game.

The series with Arkansas continues Friday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. from Riverfront Stadium.

Wind Surge headed to playoffs after Thursday win

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Nevada has never made the pilgrimage to the plains to face Kansas State in football until this season, but that doesn’t mean coach Jay Norvell doesn’t know what the Wolf Pack are about to face. 

Norvell played for longtime Wildcats coach Bill Snyder at Iowa in the 1980s, then tried to match wits with him during stints at Iowa State, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. 

And while Chris Klieman is now running the show in Manhattan, that hasn’t changed the admiration Norvell has for a football program that tends to punch well above its weight as the Wolf Pack visit on Saturday.

(AP) — All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu was cleared the day before the Chiefs beat the Browns 33-29 at Arrowhead Stadium, and coach Andy Reid made the prudent decision to hold him out after missing nearly two weeks of practice. And while Mathieu would have loved to be on the field last weekend, he acknowledged that the coaching staff made the right decision. Mathieu has been practicing all week, though, and will be on the field when the Chiefs visit the Ravens for a Sunday night showcase.&nbsp;

Perez hit a two-run homer in the first inning, matching Bench’s total from 1970 for the most by a player who played at least 75% of his team’s games at catcher. Perez is tied with Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the major league lead in homers and also leads the bigs with 112 RBIs. 

Pinder delivered a two-out hit during a four-run third inning in which Oakland had seven runners reach base — with just two hits.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid is scheduled to face trial in April on a charge of driving while intoxicated after a crash last year that seriously injured a 5-year-old girl.

Reid’s trial on the felony charge was scheduled for April 18 during a virtual hearing on Thursday. The trial is expected to last a week.

Reid, the son of Chiefs Coach Andy Reid,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kake.com/story/43654511/britt-reid-faces-charges-of-driving-while-intoxicated-in-crash-involving-young-girl">was charged after he hit two stopped cars</a>&nbsp;on an entrance ramp near Arrowhead stadium in February, prosecutors said. A girl in one of the cars,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kake.com/story/43668948/girl-out-of-hospital-nearly-10-weeks-after-crash-involving-britt-reid">Ariel Young</a>, suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Prosecutors allege Reid was speeding and intoxicated when he hit the cars. He had a blood alcohol reading of 0.113 about two hours after the crash, according to court records.

Reid underwent emergency surgery for a groin injury after the crash.

Reid was placed on administrative leave and the Chiefs allowed his contract to expire, ending his employment with the team.

Russell scored on a penalty kick in the 45th after Shelton was taken down at the edge of the 18-yard box by goalkeeper Tyler Miller. Cameron Duke slotted home Russell’s cross in the 52nd.

Reid always deflects any such attention to his players, assistant coaches and others within the organization. 

Yet, it's Reid who is closing in on the No. 5 spot in career wins as the Chiefs prepare to visit Baltimore on Sunday night. With a win, he'll have 100 with the Chiefs to go with 140 that he racked up over 14 seasons leading the Eagles.

Royals lose to A's Wednesday

The No. 16 Cowley College Tigers scored three goals in the first 20 minutes and put the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team in a deep hole Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

The Dragons nearly climbed out of that hole early in the second half pulling within a goal, but the Tigers remained undefeated with a 4-2 Jayhawk Conference victory on Wednesday.

Hutchinson falls to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the Jayhawk West. The nationally ranked Tigers are now 5-0 and 4-0 in league play. The Blue Dragons travel to Coffeyville on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons were out-shot 18-7, including 10-2 in the opening half. The Tigers had the only five corner kicks of the contest.

Cowley scored just 1:04 into the game when Nanako Seki scored from a corner kick. Elsa Pelichant scored in the 12th minute and Michelle Smith scored at the 19:09 mark of the first half for a 3-0 lead.

Blue Dragon goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona was replaced with Madison Quarles at that point.

The Dragons finally started to generate some possession and got on the board when Hadlie Lowe ripped a shot from the right side of the box into the upper left-hand goal past Makayla Farqharson to cut the Cowley lead to 3-1. Sophomore Jordan Crone was credited with an assist.

The Blue Dragons cut their deficit to 3-2 early in the second half when Aimee Maher played a long pass to Lani Dickinson, who scored her second goal of the season with 40:57 to play in the second half.

Natalia Lima, who had a goal and two assists to lead the Tigers, scored an insurance goal with 26:24 to play in the game. Cowley led 4-2 at that point.

Quarles finished with three saves and one goal allowed after entering the game. Felix-Cardona had one save. Farqharson had one save for the Tigers.

No. 16 Cowley tops Blue Dragons

Freshman Sophie Connor had a career-high 14 kills, but the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team’s offense continued to struggle as Dodge City came into the Sports Arena and defeated the Blue Dragons in four sets on Wednesday night.

Hutchinson lost to Dodge City for the first time since 2010 in a 20-25, 21-25, 25-19, 19-25 defeat by the Conquistadors, who snap a 23-game losing streak against the Blue Dragons.

Hutchinson fell to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the Jayhawk West. Dodge City is now 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Jayhawk West. Hutchinson opens the Blue Dragon Classic on Friday with No. 16 Trinity Valley at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Sports Arena.

Connor had a season-high 14 kills on .238 hitting to lead the Blue Dragons. But the Blue Dragons hit only .126 for the match, the third-straight match to hit .159 or less.

Dodge City hit .264 for the match and hit .308 or better in the three sets it won. Hillary English just missed a triple-double in leading the Conquistadors with 19 kills on .267 hitting eight nine assists and eight digs. Martyna Kmuk hit .429 with 13 kills.

The Blue Dragons were out-blocked by Dodge City 7-5 and out-dug 55-48.

Freshman Zoe Schmidt had nine kills on .333 hitting with 10 digs and two block assists. Freshman Blondie Penaflor had seven kills while hitting .200. Kristin head finished with six kills, a solo block and a block assist.

Freshman Setter Andrea Serrano finished with 32 assists and seven digs. Freshman libero Amanda Velez had nine digs.

SET 1: The first 26 rallies of the opening set featured 12 changes and three lead changes with neither team leading by more than a single point. Dodge City started to take command of the set with a 4-1 run and led 17-14 after an English kill. A Connor kill pulled the Dragons within 18-17, but an English kill, one of four by her in the first set, started a 7-3 run to close out the opening set. Dodge City hit .308 in the first set to the Blue Dragons’ .111 hitting.

SET 2: Dodge City out-hit the Dragons .367-.031. The Conquistadors had early leads of 6-3, 9-5 and 11-8. The Dragons tied the set at 13-all after a Penaflor-Schmidt combo block and led 15-13 after a Schmidt kill. Dodge City rallied back to knot the set at 18-all after a stuff block. The Dragons had a 20-19 lead after a Dodge double contact. The Conquistadors scored 6 of the final 7 points to take a 2-0 match lead.

SET 3: Connor paces an improved offensive production in the third set with five kills. The Dragons hit .222 in the third set and held Dodge City to just .062. The Dragons jumped out to a 12-5 lead after a Schmidt kill. Two kills by Connor and single kills from Penaflor and Schmidt upped the Dragon lead to 17-10. The Conquistadors scored 6 of the next 9 points and pulled within 20-15 on an English kill. The Dragons answered with a 4-1 run, capped by a Head ace for a 24-16 lead.

SET 4: Dodge City raced out to an 8-3 lead and didn’t look back. The Conquistadors finished off the match by hitting .324 and was powered by English, who had nine kills in the final set. Dodge City led early 13-6. The Dragons pulled within 19-14 after a Tauja Durham. Back=to-back kills by English helped the Conquistadors to a 22-14 lead. The Dragons went on a 5-1 run – Schmidt had three kills in the run – to pull within 23-19, but Dodge City scored the final two points of the set to close out the match.

Dragons fall to Dodge City in four sets

KANSAS CITY, MO — Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes earned the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award for his performance on Sunday in the victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Mahomes has now won the award a franchise record six times for a quarterback, passing Hall of Famer Joe Montana (5).

In the win against Cleveland, Mahomes went 27 for 36 and threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for one touchdown.
