Royals lose to Indians Tuesday

SPRINGDALE, AR — The Northwest Arkansas Naturals battled back-and-forth all night Tuesday against the Wichita Wind Surge, pulling ahead in the final innings for a 7-5 win in Game 1 of the Double-A Central Championship Series at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.

Both teams scored in the second, third and fourth innings, but a pair of runs in the third from the Naturals gave them the early lead.

Northwest Arkansas responded to a Wichita homer in the second with an RBI triple off the bat of Blake Perkins. After 2019 Natural D.J. Burt homered in the third, the Naturals countered with two runs in the bottom half, Seuly Matias and Freddy Fermin connected on back-to-back doubles, scoring Meibrys Viloria and Matias to tie the score, then put the Naturals ahead.

The two teams traded runs again in the fourth, with Viloria drawing a bases loaded walk to give the Naturals a 4-3 lead at the time.

Viloria reached in all five of his plate appearances, walking in his first three and singling in his last two.

While the Wind Surge tied the game with their third homer of the night in the sixth, the momentum turned in favor of the Naturals in the seventh for good. Brewer Hicklen made a leaping catch at the left-center field wall to end the top of the seventh, then with one out in the bottom half, drilled a go-ahead solo home run to center field, putting the Naturals up for good.

Northwest Arkansas added two runs of insurance in the eighth, on a two-run single from Fermin, giving him three RBI on the night.

All nine Naturals hitters reached at least once in the game, with eight recording hits, five scoring runs and five driving in runs.

Game 2 will be at Arvest Ballpark at 6:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday night before the series shifts to Wichita on Friday for Game 3 of this Best-of-5 series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs defense was exposed on multiple fronts in a 36-35 loss to the Ravens on Sunday night. They couldn't generate any pass rush all game, and their only sack came on a safety blitz by Daniel Sorensen. They also couldn't stop the Ravens run game, even when they knew it was coming. That was the case when Lamar Jackson took a keep for a clinching first down with about a minute left that prevented Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense from getting one last chance.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska running back Gabe Ervin Jr. is out indefinitely and possibly the season with a knee injury sustained in the loss at Oklahoma. Coach Scott Frost says Ervin has an injury to his right patellar tendon. The tendon runs from the bottom of the kneecap to the shinbone. Ervin was hurt in the third quarter when he took a handoff and, untouched, slipped at the line of scrimmage. The freshman from Buford, Georgia, started the Cornhuskers' games against Illinois and Fordham and was backup in the last two. Frost did not name a starter for Saturday's game at Michigan State.

Gose is in his third year in Cleveland's minor league system. He also pitched for the U.S Olympic team in Tokyo this summer.

UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have moved three games ahead of Philadelphia for first place in the NL East.

The Braves erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning of an 11-4 drubbing of the Diamondbacks. 

Freddie Freeman hit an RBI double and a run-scoring single in the fifth. Adam Duvall delivered a two-run homer and Austin Riley had three hits and three RBIs in Atlanta's second straight win since a four-game skid.

The Orioles avoided their 102nd loss as John Means scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings of their 2-0 shutout of the Phillies. Cole Sulser and Tyler Wells finished up the combined four-hitter as the Birds kept Bryce Harper hitless with two strikeouts in three at-bats.

Neither team scored after Ranger Suarez gave up consecutive RBI singles to Pedro Severino and Ryan McKenna in the first inning.

UNDATED (AP) — Pitcher Luis Severino has been activated by the New York Yankees and is in position to make his first major league appearance in nearly two years. Yankees manager Aaron Boone says he plans to use Severino out of the bullpen. 

The 27-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery before last season.

The two-time All-Star and 19-game winner in 2018 was limited by shoulder soreness to three appearances in 2019.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers were able to shake off their 35-point loss to the New Orleans Saints in the season opener.

Aaron Jones caught three of Aaron Rodgers' four touchdown passes and rushed for a fourth score in the Packers' 35-17 win over the Detroit Lions. 

Rodgers went 22 of 27 for 255 yards and surpassed John Elway for 10th all-time in passing yards with 51,633. Rodgers has followed up each of the Packers' last five regular-season losses by throwing four touchdown passes and no interceptions in his next game.

Jones became the first Packers running back to catch three touchdown passes in a game since Andy Uram against the Chicago Cardinals in 1942. He had 17 carries for 67 yards and six catches for 48 yards.

Jared Goff completed 13 of his first 14 passes but struggled the rest of the way as the 0-2 Lions blew a 17-14 halftime lead.

UNDATED (AP) — Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry could miss multiple games after spraining his knee in Sunday's win over Houston. 

Landry hurt his MCL while being tackled at the end of a 9-yard completion on Cleveland's second offensive play. 

Coach Kevin Stefanski said Landry will be "week to week" but provided no other specifics on a timeline for his return.

— The Colts won't know until later this week whether quarterback Carson Went will play at Tennessee after spraining both ankles in Sunday's loss to the Rams. Colts coach Frank Reich (ryk) says he does not yet have a timeline for a return. Wentz hurt his left ankle early in the game and injured his right ankle midway through the fourth quarter, causing him to miss the rest of the game. Jacob Eason is expected to make his first NFL start if Wentz can't go against the Titans.

— Raiders quarterback Derek Carr underwent tests on his injured right ankle, but coach Jon Gruden expects him to be able to play this Sunday against Miami. Carr got hurt after throwing a TD pass to Foster Moreau in the third quarter of Sunday's 26-17 victory over the Steelers. After being down on the turf for a bit, Carr got taped up in the medical tent and didn't miss a play. 

— Broncos coach Vic Fangio wouldn't confirm reports Monday that fourth-year inside linebacker Josey Jewell is out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. Fangio said they team is awaiting a final prognosis, but teammates were talking as though they'd be without their defensive play-caller for some time. Denver also lost Pro Bowl outside linebacker Bradley Chubb on Sunday when he aggravated a right ankle injury that's been bothering him for a month. 

— Houston quarterback Tyrod Taylor is day to day with a hamstring injury as the Texans face a quick turnaround with a Thursday night game against Carolina. If Taylor can't play, Deshaun Watson won't be an option. Coach David Culley says Watson will be inactive for Thursday's game just as he has been for the first two games. 

CFP expansion proposal on table this week

UNDATED (AP) — The College Football Playoff management committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday. The committee will discuss the feedback members have received from campuses since a 12-team expansion plan was unveiled in June.

The 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director get together this week and plan to reconvene early next week in Chicago. The second meeting will include university presidents who make up the CFP's board of managers.

A four-person subcommittee has come up with a 12-team format that would include six conference champions and six at-large teams. Games would be played both on campus and at bowl sites. 

— Florida coach Dan Mullen says quarterback Anthony Richardson will "probably do a little bit more at practice" this week before the 11th-ranked Gators host Tennessee. Richardson was held out of Saturday's 31-29 loss to Alabama as a precaution after the redshirt freshman strained his right hamstring near the end of an 80-yard run the previous week.

— Miami quarterback D'Eriq King has a shoulder injury that will need further evaluation on Tuesday. The Hurricanes fell out of the AP Top 25 on Sunday for the first time this season. 

Coyotes submit proposal to build arena in Tempe

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes have proposed a $1.7 billion development in Tempe that will include a hockey arena. Renderings by the Coyotes include proposed restaurants, shops and apartments on a 46-acre tract of land. 

The team says the arena would be funded by private investors but would seek city sales tax revenues to help pay for $200 million in additional costs, including infrastructure work. 

— Longtime Devils center Travis Zajac (ZAY'-jak) has signed a one-day contract with the team so he could retire as a member of the organization where he spent all but 27 games of his 15-year career. The 36-year-old Zajac plans to remain with the Devils in a number of roles on and off the ice. Zajac provided 203 goals and 552 points in 1,037 career regular-season games, including his short stint with the Islanders last spring.

GARDEN CITY – The Hutchinson Community College volleyball squad racked up 15 service aces and earned a Jayhawk West sweep on Monday night at Garden City.

The Blue Dragons had 10 or more aces in a match for the sixth time this season in a 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 victory over the Broncbusters.

Hutchinson has won 4 of its last 5 matches and improved 11-7 overall and 3-3 in the Jayhawk West. The Blue Dragons play host to Pratt on Wednesday at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons’ service game stressed the Broncbusters all match long. Hutchinson had six aces in the first set, four in the second and five in the final set. Zoe Schmidt, Morgan Harvey and Rachel Easom had three aces each. Sophie Connor had two aces.

The 15 aces tied for the second-most team aces by the Blue Dragons this season. Hutchinson had a season-high 17 aces against Cloud County on September 1. The Dragons also had 15 aces against Rose State on September 10.

Blondie Penaflor lead the Blue Dragons with nine kills. Sophomore Kristina Head finished with six kills and seven total blocks (1 solo, 6 block assists). Connor had five kills and Schmidt had four kills.

Schmidt led the Blue Dragons defensively with 15 digs. Harvey also reached double figures in digs with 10. Connor had seven digs and freshman libero Amanda Velez had six.

Freshman setter Andrea Serrano had 26 assists for the Blue Dragons.

Hutch had some difficulty closing out sets on Monday night. The Dragons led 21-16 in the first set, but Garden City pulled within 24-22 before a Harvey back-row attack fell for a kill on set point. The Blue Dragons owned a 17-8 lead in the second set, but the Busters pulled within 22-19 before Hutch scored the final three points of the set. The Dragons had a 20-11 lead in the third set. Garden City battled back to knot the set at 24-all before a Buster service error and Connor kill closed out the match.

Dragon VB sweeps Garden City Monday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs defense was exposed on multiple fronts in a 36-35 loss to the Ravens on Sunday night.

The first ever St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame Class was officially inducted at an enshrinement ceremony at Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center Sunday.

The class is comprised of 10 individuals, one team and a Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.

Officially created last November, the St. Joseph Area Sports Hall of Fame recognizes individuals, families and teams that have made a significant impact on sports history in Buchanan County.

The inductees were carefully selected from a large pool of candidates by the St. Joseph Sports Commission, led by chairman Brett Esely.

To be eligible for selection, the individual must have been born in Buchanan County, must have made their sports career or accomplished their feat in Buchanan County or must be contributing to sports in Buchanan County at the present time.

The class includes Lafayette High School graduate and legendary Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder, Benton graduate, Nebraska football legend and former Carolina Panther Mike Rucker, MLB veteran and Central alum Byron Browne, along with two-time Olympic team weightlifter and Benton alum Wes Barnett.

"I want to thank my friends, my family and my teammates," Barnett said. "Really the city of St. Joseph who has always been behind me and supporting me along the way."

Snyder, who retired from coaching at Kansas State in the 2018 season, is also a College Football Hall of Fame inductee. Of all of the accolades and honors Snyder has accumulated over his historic and illustrious career, he says being honored by his hometown this way is the best award he's ever received.

He especially thanks his mother, Marionetta, who raised him in a one-room St. Joseph apartment.

"St. Joe has been so prominent in my life," Snyder said. "I was born here and raised here. And I think about, as you do, people who are truly special in your life. I think it's so neat that you're having this (Hall of Fame). I look at this wonderful group of people here and congratulate each and every one of you."

Also included is Charlie Burri, Missouri Western’s First Athletic Director, Newt Hillyard, the Founder of the Hillyard Companies, Julius Hochman, Father of Boys' Baseball in St. Joseph, two-time Olympic gymnastics medalist Terin Humphrey, Naismith National Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Henry Iba and softball pioneer Cheri Kempf.

"There's a lot of value in celebrating folks from St. Joseph who have made an incredible impact in sports," said Kempf, who was a 1980 state softball champion at Mid-Buchanan and three-sport athlete at Missouri Western. "Brett (Esely), thanks for hanging in there with me and getting all of the details locked up. And the (selection) committee, I celebrate you. You have a great future in front of you."

The team chosen for the 2021 Hall of Fame Class was the&nbsp;Meierhoffer/St. Jo Frontier Casino Fast Pitch Softball Team from 1997-2003 - a team that won four national titles during that time.

The Special Olympics Athlete of the Year included in the class is Mike Grossman, who medaled in track and field during the 1999 special Olympics.

The Sports Commission had 25 total nominees for its inaugural class. The inductees were selected by an anonymous selection committee.

Every class will include a maximum of 10 individual inductees, and those who aren't inducted are automatically put into a pool of consideration for the next five years.

Anyone can nominate an athlete or team for the St. Joseph Sports Hall of Fame by getting in contact with the St. Joseph Sports Commission.

Clarke closed with a 5-under 65 at Minnehaha Country Club, birdieing the par-4 18th to match Choi and Steve Flesch at 12-under 198. 

Flesch was eliminated with a bogey on the first extra trip down 18 following a final-round 66.

Sports Headlines for Monday

WICHITA, KS –&nbsp;The Wind Surge fired off for 11 runs on 13 hits in their regular season finale, cruising past Arkansas 11-6 on Sunday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.

The Wind Surge and Travelers combined to score 13 runs on 17 hits through the first five innings of play. Arkansas got on the board first in with an RBI double off the bat of Julio Rodriguez. Wichita got that run back and added two more with one swing of the bat. In the bottom of the first with runners on first and second, Spencer Steer started out his day with a three-run shot to left field. Steer’s 14th of the season traveled 414 feet at 108 miles per hour and took a one-hop off the concourse and out of the stadium.

The Surge were just getting started offensively, rattling off four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 7-1 lead after two innings of play. After Ernie De La Trinidad walked and Austin Martin doubled, D.J. Burt picked up his 26th and 27th RBIs of the season with a rocket to the left field wall for his 11th double. Roy Morales then singled on a groundball to the second base Patrick Frick. Trying to throw out Morales, Frick threw a bouncing ball past the first baseman, allowing Burt to score on the play. Spencer Steer closed out the inning with another hard hit ball to the left field wall. This one took an odd bounced and drove in Morales all the way from first for his fourth RBI of the day and putting the Wind Surge ahead 7-1.

The Travs picked up one run in the third off a Joe Rizzo RBI double and two more runs in the fifth to bring the game to just a two run margin. The Wind Surge made sure to push their lead higher as much as they could, scoring three more runs to place their final tally at 10 runs scored. In the fifth, Andrew Bechtold hit his 18th home run of the year on a towering fly ball to left field to push the lead back to three runs.

D.J. Burt hit his third RBI of the day on another line drive shot to center field in the bottom of the eighth to add some insurance to the Surge lead. The scoring was finally capped off by Trey Cabbage. Cabbage hit his 10th double to of the season to center field to drive in Burt and plate the 11th run of the afternoon for Wichita.

The Travelers picked up one more run in the ninth, but the Surge lead was too much to overcome as Wichita cruised to an 11-6 regular season finale victory.

The Wind Surge will start their postseason run Tuesday night versus NW Arkansas in Springdale, AR at Arvest Park. Games one and two will be on the road, with Game 3 and any others needed in Wichita.

Jackson was 0-3 against the Chiefs, and he needed all of his multiple skills to break through to hand Mahomes his first loss in September after 11 victories. The matchup of NFL MVPs — Mahomes in 2018, Jackson the next year — was a wild affair from the start. 

The Ravens needed a fumble by Clyde Edwards-Helaire as Kansas City was marching into field goal range to clinch it.

COFFEYVILLE – Staring squarely at a rare three-game losing streak, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team had everything going against it heading into the final 9 minutes of regulation play on Saturday at Coffeyville.

The Blue Dragons missed two first-half breakaways, lost a top defensive player to injury late in the first half and despite dominating play in the first 45 minutes, Hutchinson trailed the Red Ravens by a goal at halftime.

COFFEYVILLE – Staring squarely at a rare three-game losing streak, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team had everything going against it heading into the final 9 minutes of regulation play on Saturday at Coffeyville.The Blue Dragons missed two first-half breakaways, lost a top defensive player to injury late in the first half and despite dominating play in the first 45 minutes, Hutchinson trailed the Red Ravens by a goal at halftime.The Dragons created a reversal for fortune in a scintillating final 9 minutes with two goals in a 4-minute, 4-second span and then held on to defeat Coffeyville 2-1 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.Hutchinson improved to 3-4 overall, 2-4 in the Jayhawk West. Coffeyville is 5-2 overall, suffering its first KJCCC loss of the season at 4-1. The Blue Dragons travel to Dodge City on Wednesday.The Blue Dragons had to play the entire second half without center back Zara Lawless, who collided with Coffeyville’s Bianca Rea while both were chasing a loose ball at midfield with 10:38 to play in the first half. That meant midfielder Jordan Crone moved to the back line and helped neutralize the Ravens’ strong offensive attack.Trailing 1-0 with less than 9 minutes remaining in the second half, the Dragons caught a bit of a break and tied the game on an Aimee Maher goal. Maher, who got the ball in front after a deflected Dragon crossing attempt rolled right to her, shot from 13 yards out. As she short, Maher slipped and mis-hit the ball, but Coffeyville keeper Alessandra Thompson had trouble corralling the shot and the ball rolled in for the game-tying goal with 8:45 to play. Maher scored her first goal of the season.The Dragons stunned the Ravens again just 4:04 later.Lexi Jack headed a Raven punt to Julia De Souza, who worked her way past midfield and played a pass up the right sideline. Lani Dickinson ran the ball down and with one touch, fed the ball to Hadlie Lowe, who ripped a shot from the right side from 12 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal for a 2-1 Dragon lead with 4:41 to play. Dickinson and De Souza were credited with assists on Lowe’s fourth goal of the season.The Dragons had to survive two free kicks and a corner kick by the Ravens in the final 2:35 of regulation.The closest call came with 1:57 to play. A Raven direct free kick from the left side about 40 yards out, hit the cross bar and created a goalmouth scramble. A second Coffeyville shot was partially deflected by the shoulder of Emma Scholl and a third was headed for the upper right corner, but Blue Dragon goalkeeper Olivia Felix-Cardona leaped high for the save and fell on the ball.The comeback win is only the fifth when trailing at halftime in Blue Dragon history. Hutchinson is 5-38-1 when trailing at halftime.Felix-Cardona was credited with eight saves in the game. The only goal allowed was to Keysli Elias, who scored after Felix-Cardona allowed a rebound from a hard shot by Ashleigh Sweat.
