There were four lead changes in the final 38 seconds, and the Jayhawks survived when Iowa State's Gabe Kalscheur missed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer. Ochai Agbaji scored 22 points to lead Kansas, which rebounded from a loss at Texas Tech on Saturday. Christian Braun had 13 points and Harris had 12. Isaiah Brockington scored 17 points for Iowa State.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Trent Frazier scored a season-high 29 points, Kofi Cockburn had his eighth straight double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 25 Illinois held off struggling Nebraska for a hard-earned 81-71 victory. The Illini have won five straight games and 10 of 11 and are out to their best start in conference play since 2005. Nebraska has lost nine of 10 and 21 straight against ranked opponents. Bryce McGowens scored 19 to lead the Huskers.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw hit a 3-pointer with four seconds to play to lift No. 9 Iowa State over No. 25 Kansas State 73-70 on Tuesday night.The Cyclones trailed most of the game and rallied after being down by as many as 11 in the fourth quarter. &nbsp;It was Iowa State's first lead since they led 3-2 in the first quarter. They went 6-for-7 from the 3-point line in the fourth quarter. &nbsp;Kansas State didn't get a shot off on their last possession and gave the Wildcats their first loss of the season at home. &nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — The Green Bay Packers finished the regular season with the No. 1 seed in the NFC and the top spot in the final AP Pro32 poll. The Packers earned all 12 first-place votes for 384 points. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers remained at No. 2 and will open the postseason by hosting the Philadelphia Eagles. The Kansas City Chiefs inched up a spot to No. 3. The Chiefs will begin their drive for their third consecutive Super Bowl appearance as they host the Pittsburgh Steelers. And the Tennessee Titans, who have the top seed in the AFC, gained a place to No. 4. The Dallas Cowboys climbed three spots to No. 5.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Mexican forward Alan Pulido needs knee surgery and will miss Sporting Kansas City's entire 2022 Major League Soccer season. The team says Pulido will have surgery on Monday in Los Angeles. Expected recovery time is nine months to a year. Pulido had eight goals in 21 league games last year in his second season with Kansas City. He played previously for Tigers, Greece's Levadiakos and Olympiakos and Chivas. He has five goals in 20 appearances for Mexico. He was on the 2014 World Cup roster but did not get in a game.

UNDATED (AP) — The Big East has announced that No. 23 Providence's game at Creighton on Tuesday night has been canceled because of COVID-19 issues in the Friars' program. The conference office will attempt to reschedule the game. This is the third Big East game Creighton has had called off because of COVID-19 in opponents' programs. Providence had a game against Georgetown canceled last month because of COVID-19 in the Hoyas' program.&nbsp;

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Malachi Smith and Kobe Elvis posted 14 points apiece as Dayton edged past Saint Louis 68-63/ DaRon Holmes II added 11 points and five blocks for Dayton (10-6, 2-1 Atlantic 10 Conference). Toumani Camara had nine rebounds. The Billikens' 26 points in the first half were a season low for the team. Gibson Jimerson scored a season-high 23 points for the Billikens (10-5, 1-1). Terrence Hargrove Jr. added 14 points. Fred Thatch Jr. had 10 points.

Kucherov has hat trick, Lightning beat Sabres 6-1

UNDATED (AP) — Nikita Kucherov scored a hat trick, Steven Stamokos had a goal and two assists, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Buffalo Sabres 6-1 Tuesday night. 

Anthony Cirelli had a goal and an assist, Ondrej Palat extended his scoring streak to four games, and the Lightning got three assists from Alex Killorn and two from Victor Hedman. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 17 saves for his 20th win of the season.

Tampa Bay (24-9-5) has won three of four following a three-game skid to keep pace with the Florida Panthers atop the NHL standings with 53 points.

— William Nylander scored in regulation and got the winner in a shootout as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3. Auston Matthews and Ilya Mikheyev also scored in regulation as as Toronto improved to 5-0-1 on a six-game point streak, and 21-4-2 since opening the season 2-4-1. Jack Campbell made 31 saves. Keegan Kolesar, William Karlsson and Alex Pietrangelo scored for the Golden Knights. Robin Lehner stopped 15 shots for Vegas, which has now lost four of its last five games — all at home. In the tiebreaker, Cambell denied attempts by Evgenii Dadonov, Chandler Stephenson and Jonathan Marchessault, and Lehner stopped Jason Spezza and Matthews before Nylander scored for the win.

— Logan Couture scored in overtime moments after a fan threw a fake octopus on the ice and the San Jose Sharks beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2. The octopus — a longstanding fan tradition in Detroit — hit the ice less than a minute into overtime with play in San Jose's end. Couture directed the linesman to grab it, and play continued, with the Sharks pushing the puck to the other end. Brent Burns sent the puck toward the net and Alex Nedeljkovic stopped it but couldn't control it. As the puck sat near the goal line, Couture knocked it in.

— Evgeni Malkin scored twice and had an assist in his season debut, Jeff Carter added two goals and the surging Pittsburgh Penguins rolled to a 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks. Malkin had not played since undergoing right knee surgery in June. The four-time All-Star and 2012 Hart Trophy winner had been skating with teammates for several weeks and was a full participant in Monday's practice. He centered the second line between Carter and Kasperi Kapanen, which was responsible for all four Pittsburgh goals. Kapanen added two assists and Tristan Jarry stopped 25 shots for the Penguins, who bounced right back from Saturday's loss at Dallas that snapped a 10-game winning streak. Jakob Silfverberg scored Anaheim's goal and Anthony Stolarz made 30 saves.

— Matt Duchene scored two goals, including the game-winner on a power play 3:01 into overtime, and the streaking Nashville Predators beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-4. Luke Kunin also scored twice, Tanner Jeannot added a goal and Juuse Saros made 40 saves to help Nashville win its fifth straight. 

— Sam Reinhart had two goals and an assist and the Florida Panthers handed Vancouver Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau his first regulation loss in 10 games with a 5-2 victory. Aleksander Barkov scored his team-leading 15th goal and also had an assist for Florida. Aaron Ekblad had a goal and two assists, Maxim Mamin also scored, and Frank Vatrano and Anton Lundell each had two assists. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 42 shots. The Panthers move to 6-0-1 in their past seven games.

— Alex DeBrincat scored twice and Calvin de Haan got his first goal in nearly a year to lift Chicago to its second straight road win. Connor Murphy also scored for Chicago, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 24 saves for his 11th win.

Vegas' Eichel back on ice for first time since neck surgery

UNDATED (AP) — Jack Eichel finally skated with the Vegas Golden Knights for the first time since being acquired from Buffalo and becoming the first NHL player to undergo artificial disk replacement surgery on his neck in November. Eichel said even though his new teammates were preparing for their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs while he wore a non-contact jersey as he skated around the team's practice facility, he felt like he was part of a hockey team again.

Vegas coach Peter DeBoer said it'll take some time — "a while" — before the 25-year-old All-Star center will be able to endure contact. Eichel said he has no target date.

— A person with knowledge of the deal says goalie Tuukka (TOO'-kah) Rask is signing a prorated, $1 million contract for the rest of the season with the Boston Bruins. The deal had not been announced. The 2014 Vezina (VEH'-zih-nuh) Trophy winner will make $545,000 for the rest of the season. 

— The Minnesota Wild have agreed to terms with defenseman Jon Merrill on a three-year, $3.6 million contract extension. The deal runs through the 2024-25 season.

— The Detroit Red Wings have hired Nicklas Lidstrom as vice president of hockey operations and will be based in his native Sweden and involved in every aspect of helping run the organization.

— New York Islanders coach Barry Trotz and defenseman Ryan Pulock have been placed in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol. Dallas goaltender Braden Holtby and forward Denis Gurianov (goor-ee-AH'-nahv) also were placed in the protocol. Same for Chicago defenseman Jake McCabe and Blackhawks trainer Mike Gapski.

Morant scores 29, Grizzlies beat Warriors for 10th straight

UNDATED (AP) — Ja Morant scored 29 points, including five in the final minute, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Golden State Warriors 116-108 for their 10th straight win. Ziaire Williams and Tyus Jones had 17 points each for Memphis. Jones keyed a fourth-quarter rally that put the Grizzlies ahead for good. He finished 6 for 8 from the field, including connecting on all five of his 3-point attempts. 

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 27 points, while Klay Thompson finished with 14 points. Andrew Wiggins and Gary Payton II scored 13 each.

— The Los Angeles Clippers rallied from a 25-point deficit in the second half for a stunning 87-85 victory over the Denver Nuggets. Amir Coffey had 18 points and Reggie Jackson scored 11 of his 13 in the fourth quarter. Terance Mann scored nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter for the Clippers. They won despite managing a meager 28 points in the lowest-scoring first half in the NBA this season and then falling behind 59-34 midway through the third period. Aaron Gordon scored a season-high 30 points and Nikola Jokic had 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists for the Nuggets.

— Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 30.8 seconds remaining and the Washington Wizards beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-118 despite being without star Bradley Beal because of health and safety protocols. The Wizards worked the shot clock down, and Caldwell-Pope's attempt from the right wing went in off the glass. The Thunder lost their fifth straight game.

— Devin Booker scored 16 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:02 remaining, and Chris Paul had 15 points and 12 assists as the Phoenix Suns beat Toronto 99-95 to snap the Raptors' longest winning streak of the season at six games. Jae Crowder scored 19 points, Deandre Ayton had 16 and Mikal Bridges added 12 as the Suns improved to 31-9, matching the franchise's best record through 40 games.

— Brandon Ingram capped a 33-point, nine-assist performance by hitting three 3-pointers in the final 1:13 — the last with less than a second left — and the New Orleans Pelicans edged the Minnesota Timberwolves, 128-125. Josh Hart had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Jonas Valanciunas added 13 points and 12 rebounds for New Orleans. Anthony Edwards scored 28 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 26 for Minnesota, which saw its four-game winning streak snapped. D'Angelo Russell had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves, and his driving scoop tied the game with 3.6 seconds left.

— Nikola Vučević (nee-KOH'-lah voo-CHAY'-vihch) scored 22 points, DeMar DeRozan had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls routed the Detroit Pistons 133-87. DeRozan sat for most of the final 16 minutes but still added seven assists. Eastern Conference-leading Chicago won after its season-best nine-game winning streak ended Sunday in Dallas. 

AP source: Cavs give GM Altman contract extension, new title

CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the decision tells AP that Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman has been rewarded for the team's turnaround with a contract extension and new job title, president of basketball operations. Altman has re-shaped the Cavs' roster and moved them back into playoff contention. He has agreed to the extension through the 2027-28 season, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not made the deal official. 

No. 19 Texas Tech ends No. 1 Baylor's 21-game streak, 65-62, Standofd tops Southern Cal

UNDATED (AP) — The nation's longest winning streak is over after No. 19 Texas Tech won 65-62 at top-ranked Baylor. The defending national champion Bears had won 21 consecutive games. 

Kevin McCullar scored 12 points in his return after missing two games, including a key 3-pointer late. The Red Raiders were coming off a win over then-No. 6 Kansas. 

Adam Flagler and James Akinjo had 17 points for Baylor. Akinjo's 3-pointer at the buzzer hit the front of the rim. The Bears were the last unbeaten team in Division I. 

Southern California had also been undefeated before losing at Stanford earlier Tuesday. 

Harrison Ingram and Spencer Jones scored 21 points apiece and Stanford beat No. 5 Southern California 75-69 for its first win over a top five team in nearly 15 years. Stanford returned from a nearly three-week break for COVID-19 protocols and delivered a big win in a nearly empty arena. 

Stanford had lost 14 straight games against teams in the top five of the AP poll since beating No. 3 UCLA 75-68 on Jan. 28, 2007. Isaiah Mobley scored 16 points to lead the Trojans and Boogie Ellis added 14. 

— Freshman Jabari Smith scored a season-high 25 points and Allen Flanigan made four straight free throws in the final minute, lifting No. 4 Auburn to an 81-77 victory over rival No. 24 Alabama. The Tigers lost all of a 14-point lead before managing to avoid becoming the third Top-5 team to lose on the night. They pushed their win streak to 12 games in the rivals' first Top 25 matchup in 35 years.

— Andrew Jones scored a season-best 22 points and made four steals, and No. 21 Texas beat Oklahoma 66-52. Texas led by 20 points six minutes into the second half. Oklahoma cut the deficit to 11 with 5:38 left, but Timmy Allen scored inside for Texas and Jones made consecutive layups to put the Sooners away.

— Santiago Vescovi (vehs-KOH'-vee) scored 14 points to help No. 22 Tennessee overcome a sluggish start to beat South Carolina, 66-46, in a Southeastern Conference game Tuesday night. The Volunteers, who live by the 3-point shot, missed their first five attempts and didn't hit their first 3-pointer until 2 minutes were left in the first half.

Georgia, Tide, Michigan, Cincinnati, Baylor top final Top 25

UNDATED (AP) — Georgia is No. 1 in The Associated Press college football poll after earning its second national championship - and first in 41 years - by beating rival Alabama Monday night, 33-18.

The Bulldogs received all 61 first-place votes to be a unanimous No. 1 for the ninth time this season. The Tide finished No. 2, giving the Southeastern Conference the top two teams in the final rankings for the third time since 2011.

Michigan was No. 3, Cincinnati No. 4, with Baylor at No. 5.

Ohio State was No. 6 and Oklahoma State finished seventh.

Notre Dame was eighth, Michigan State was ninth and Oklahoma was 10th, giving the Big 12 three top 10 teams.

— Florida hired New York Giants offensive line coach Rob Sale to a similar position Tuesday. The move leaves new Gators coach Billy Napier with just two staff spots remaining to fill. Sale also will serve as Florida's offensive coordinator, although Napier is planning to call plays in his first year in Gainesville. 

— The New York Jets and Detroit Lions will get an up-close look at some of college football's top players at the Senior Bowl. The coaching staffs of both teams were assigned by NFL Football Operations to lead the all-star squads for the game in Mobile, Alabama, on Feb. 5.

— Baker Mayfield didn't lose his starting job after a losing season. Browns general manager Andrew Berry said Tuesday the team expects the quarterback to return as its starter next season and rebound after an injury-filled, sub-par 2021.

— The New York Giants have cleaned house, firing coach Joe Judge a day after general manager Dave Gettleman retired. The Giants announced the move late Tuesday afternoon.

— An arrest report says Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Geno Smith's arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence came after the Washington State Patrol pulled him over for going 96 mph in a 60 mph zone and driving erratically across several lanes of traffic. Smith was taken to a hospital where he reportedly became agitated prior having his blood drawn after refusing a preliminary breath test.

— A final legal hurdle has been cleared for the Denver Broncos to begin the process of finding a new buyer for the team that's valued at close to $4 billion. A judge ruled Tuesday that a right of first refusal agreement between late owners Pat Bowlen and Edgar Kaiser "is no longer valid or enforceable in any respect" and "has terminated in its entirety." Kaiser's estate had claimed that before his death in 2012 Kaiser had transferred his right of first refusal should the team ever hit the market. 

Djokovic: Not isolating after COVID infection was 'error'

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic says knew he'd tested positive for COVID-19 when he attended a newspaper interview and photo shoot in Serbia last month. 

Djokovic acknowledged today that he made an "error of judgment" and should have immediately gone into isolation. 

In a statement posted to his social media accounts, the tennis star also blamed "human error" by his support team for failing to declare that he had traveled in the two-week period before entering Australia. Upon arrival, his visa was revoked and then reinstated.

The ongoing saga is over whether he should be allowed into the country despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19. The back and forth has provoked outrage in Australia and overshadowed lead-up to the Australian Open.

— Five-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray has advanced to the second round of the Sydney Tennis Classic by beating Viktor Durasovic 6-3, 6-1. Murray entered the tournament with a wild card and has also been handed one for next week's Australian Open. 

— No new inductees have been selected for the International Tennis Hall of Fame for the first time in its history. None passed the threshold required for entry.

AP source: MLB lockout talks to resume after month break

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball and the players' association are scheduled to meet Thursday in the first negotiations between the parties since labor talks broke off Dec. 1. 

MLB has been preparing a new proposal for the union. Management locked out the union on Dec. 2 following the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement. The dispute threatens spring training, which is scheduled to start Feb. 16 in Florida and Arizona.

— Keith Hernandez will have his No. 17 retired by the New York Mets this summer to honor his seven seasons as a player and nearly three decades as a beloved broadcaster with the franchise. The Mets announced that Hernandez will become the fourth player to have his uniform number retired by the team in a ceremony prior to a game July 9 against Miami.

Shiffrin wins record 47th slalom, Vlhova takes season title

SCHLADMING, Austria (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin has won a record 47th slalom in the last women's World Cup slalom before the Beijing Olympics. Shiffrin's became the first skier in World Cup history to win that many races in a single discipline. Her Slovakian rival Petra Vlhova locked up the season title in the discipline.

The Salthawk girls came from behind to&nbsp; win 47-35 after trailing by 7 at half time but was able to tie the game 27-27 going into the 4th quarter with big baskets by Grace Posh and Grace Keeler.&nbsp; Harley Wilson hit big free throws down the stretch to help the Hutchinson girl's to their 6th win of the season.

In the boy's game, Hutchinson trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half before Nick Lange caught fire and tied the game at 58-58 with a strong drive in the paint to send it into overtime.&nbsp; The overtime period was back and forth before Maize South got a put back basket by Owen Clyne to take the lead with 13.6 seconds remaining.

Hutchinson was unable to get off a shot and Maize South won 64-63 in OT.&nbsp; Lange let the Salthawks with 16 points.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw hit a 3-pointer with four seconds to play to lift No. 9 Iowa State over No. 25 Kansas State 73-70 on Tuesday night.

The Cyclones trailed most of the game and rallied after being down by as many as 11 in the fourth quarter.  It was Iowa State’s first lead since they led 3-2 in the first quarter. They went 6-for-7 from the 3-point line in the fourth quarter. 

 Kansas State didn’t get a shot off on their last possession and gave the Wildcats their first loss of the season at home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Dajuan Harris hit a driving layup with 8 seconds left, and No. 9 Kansas got the better of a wild finish against No. 15 Iowa State to win 62-61.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals today announced promotions to their baseball operations staff.  Alec  Zumwalt  has  been  promoted  to  the  senior  director  of  player development/hitting performance, and Paul Gibson has been promoted to senior director of pitching. 

Mitch Maier is now the director of player development/field coordinator, and Malcom Culver is now the assistant director of player development. Ryan Maid has been promoted to senior director of behavioral sciences, Jack Monahan has been promoted to director of baseball operations/scouting and player development and Nick Leto has been promoted to director of Arizona operations/scouting assistant. Kristin Lock is now the manager of baseball administration.

Zumwalt is entering his 11th season with the Royals, including the last two as the director of player development/hitting performance. Since joining the organization in the fall 2011, Zumwalt has served as a pro scout, a Major League advance scout (2013-17) and as the director of baseball operations/player development and scouting (2018-19). In his current role, Zumwalt is involved with all facets of player development in addition to coordinating with the performance science and strength and conditioning departments to direct and improve training methods, production and performance of the Royals minor league hitters. He also works alongside the research and development department to help refine processes and procedures  for evaluating hitting performances.

Gibson is entering his 12th season with the Royals, inc luding the last two as the director of pitching performance. He previously served as the national supervisor in the scouting department from 2011- 18 and as a special assistant to the general manager/pitching advisor in 2O19. This will mark Gibson's 36th season in professional baseball, which includes a 19-year playing career and eight years in the Majors with Tigers (1988-91), Mets (1992-93) and Yankees (1993-94, 1996).

Maier spent the last two seasons as the director of baseball operations, after serving on the Major League coaching staff as the first base coach from 2018-19. He also worked with the outfielders and base runners during those two seasons on the coaching staff, and served in that same role on an interim basis at the end of the 2017 season. h1aier was selected by Kansas City in the first round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft and played professionally for 12 seasons, including six years in the Majors (all with the Royals) in 2006 and from 2008-12.

Culver is entering his fourth year in the Royals front office, after serving as the assistant director of baseball operations in 2021 and the assistant to player development from 2019-20. He was selected by Kansas City in the eighth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and played for 10 seasons in the minors through 2017. Culver was drafted as a pitcher, but converted to a position player from 2009-10, before moving back to the mound in 2011.

Maid is in his fifth season with the Royals, after joining the Club in 2017 as the director of behavioral science. Prior to coming to Kansas City, he spent two seasons with the Atlanta Braves as the director of performance psychology. Before that, Maid worked as a Navy psychologist for seven years from 2011-17. He originally joined the Navy in 2010 through a postdoctoral fellowship program and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant Commander in March 2017.

Monahan is entering his 13th season with the Royals, including the previous five years as the coordinator of scouting operations. He has also held titles of assistant to amateur scouting (2013-16), baseball operations intern (2011-12) and minor league video intern at Northwest Arkansas (2010).

Leto is in his 15th full season with the organization, though this is his first year as director of Arizona operations/scouting assistant. He previously served as the manager of Arizona operations for 14 years and has assisted player development, amateur and international scouting.

Lock is in her sixth season with the Royals, after spending the last three as the assistant to baseball operations/administration. She previously served as a community relations/Royals Charities intern in 2017 and as a baseball operations intern in 2O18. INDEANAPOLIS, In. (AP) —Defense earns redemption as Georgia ends long title drought. Georgia won its long-awaited national championship the way it dominated during an undefeated regular season — by relying on its defense. The Bulldogs allowed only 30 yards rushing in beating Alabama 33-18 in Indianapolis. Georgia won its first national title since the 1980 season. The clinching touchdown came on cornerback Kelee Ringo's 79-yard interception return with less than one minute remaining. Georgia won the rematch with Alabama after losing 41-24 in the SEC championship game. The Bulldogs entered the national championship game ranked first in the nation by allowing only 9.6 points per game.

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs did what they had to Saturday, beating the Broncos on the road to finish up the regular season. Too bad the Titans did what they had to Sunday, too. So rather than have the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye, the Chiefs will face seventh-seeded Pittsburgh on Sunday night in the wild-card round at Arrowhead Stadium. It will be a rematch of a game from just a few weeks ago, when the Chiefs led 23-0 by halftime and rolled through the second half in a 36-10 romp. Kansas City lost to the Steelers in January 2017 the previous time they met in a wild-card playoff game.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost has announced Bill Busch's promotion from defensive analyst to special teams coordinator. Frost also said assistant Mike Dawson will have additional duties. Dawson will now coach the interior linemen as well as the edge rushers following defensive line coach Tony Tuioti's departure for Oregon. Busch's charge is to upgrade one of the worst special teams units in the country this past season. Busch was LSU's safeties coach from 2018-20 before returning to Lincoln last February for a third stint with the Cornhuskers.

Marchand bloodied, scores twice in Bruins' 7-3 win over Caps

WASHINGTON (AP) — Brad Marchand returned from a bloody nose to score two goals and assist on another in the Boston Bruins' 7-3 rout of the Washington Capitals. Marchand barely missed any time after taking a hard high stick to the face in the first period. Boston improved to 9-1-1 in its past 11 road games, and got two goals from David Pastrnak (PAHS'-tur-nahk) and one apiece from Matt Grzelcyk (GRIHZ'-lihk), Craig Smith and Erik Haula. The Capitals' four-game losing streak is their longest of the season. Conor Sheary scored twice for Washington and T.J. Oshie had a goal.

— Nazem Kadri scored a go-ahead goal late in the third period, and the surging Colorado Avalanche rallied to beat the Seattle Kraken 4-3. Nicolas Aube-Kubel had two goals and Devon Toews also scored for Colorado, which beat former teammate Philipp Grubauer to win its 12th straight at home and fifth in a row overall. Grubauer, who had 31 saves, received a warm reception from the crowd. Marcus Johansson, Jared McCann and Colin Backwell scored for Seattle. 

— Phillip Danault, Blake Lizotte and Adrian Kempe scored and the Los Angeles Kings defeated the New York Rangers 3-1 Monday night. Trevor Moore had two assists and Cal Petersen made 22 saves. The Kings have won four of five. Mika Zibanejad had a goal and Alexandar Georgiev made 36 saves for the Rangers, who have lost two of three to start their longest road trip of the season. Kris Knoblauch served as temporary coach for New York after Gerard Gallant tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. 

NHLPA files grievance after Sharks terminate Kane's contract

UNDATED (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that the NHL Players' Association has filed a grievance against the San Jose Sharks for terminating the remainder of Evander Kane's contract. The grievance was filed Sunday night and contends the Sharks did not have sufficient grounds to make the move. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the matter is now in the league's hands.

The Sharks placed Kane on unconditional waivers, saying the forward violated COVID-19 protocols while with the AHL Barracuda. Kane cleared waivers and is now an unrestricted free agent.

— The NHL has postponed Tuesday night's scheduled game between the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers because of COVID-19 issues with the Flyers. A spike in infections driven by the omicron variant of the coronavirus has led to frequent postponements in recent weeks. Three games scheduled for Monday night were called off. The Hurricanes-Flyers game was the second scheduled for Tuesday to be postponed, and the 104th postponement this season. Philadelphia last played on Saturday night, an overtime win at home over San Jose. Several players sat out because of health and safety protocols.

— Pittsburgh center Evgeni Malkin could make his season debut when the Penguins face the Anaheim Ducks. Coach Mike Sullivan says he anticipates the four-time All-Star and 2012 Hart Trophy winner will be a "game-time" decision as Pittsburgh continues its West Coast swing. 

— Dallas Stars coach Rick Bowness has been fined $25,000 for twice slamming a stick against the boards behind the bench seconds after his team's 2-1 loss at St. Louis. The Blues scored two power-play goals in the final minute, the 11th time in NHL history that a team won in regulation after trailing by one with a minute left. The league announced the fine and said the money goes to the NHL Foundation.

Rozier, Ball lead Hornets to back-to-back wins vs. Bucks

UNDATED (AP) — LaMelo Ball hit the go-ahead basket with 15 seconds left, Terry Rozier scored 27 points and the Charlotte Hornets beat the NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks for the second time in three nights, 103-99. Ball scored 18 of his 23 points in the second half, and Miles Bridges added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who have won six of eight games and improved to 12-5 at home. 

Khris Middleton had 27 points and 11 assists, and Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH'-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON'-poh) added 26 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists for the Bucks, who also lost 114-106 to the Hornets on Saturday night.

— Anfernee Simons had 23 points and 11 assists, and the short-handed Portland Trail Blazers took advantage of James Harden's absence for a 114-108 victory over the Brooklyn Nets Monday night. Harden was out with a hyperextended left knee. Kyrie Irving started in his second game of the season and finished with 22 points. Kevin Durant led all scorers with 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Nets. Robert Covington had 21 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Blazers, who had all five starters in double figures. 

— Jarret Allen had 18 points and 17 rebounds, Darius Garland also had a double-double and the Cleveland Cavaliers held off the Sacramento Kings 109-108. Kevin Love scored 19 points, Evan Mobley added 17 and Lauri Markkanen and Cedi Osman finished with 15 points apiece. Garland had 12 points and 11 assists as the Cavaliers completed the season sweep of the Kings. Tyrese Haliburton had 21 points and eight assists for Sacramento. Buddy Hield added 19 points. The Kings have lost a season-worst five straight.

— Joel Embiid had 31 points and eight rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers over the Houston Rockets 111-91 for their seventh straight win. Embiid turned in his seventh straight 30-point game and also had six assists. He was 9 of 16 from the field and made all 13 of his free throws. He's the second player in NBA history to score exactly 31 points in four straight games. Bob McAdoo was the first to do it for the Buffalo Braves in November 1973. Embiid entered Monday averaging 26.8 points per game, sixth in the NBA. 

— RJ Barrett scored 31 points in his first home game since hitting his first career buzzer beater, leading the New York Knicks to a 111-96 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Evan Fournier returned from a one-game absence with 18 points for the Knicks, who broke open a game that had been close throughout by outscoring the Spurs 18-2 to start the fourth quarter. Barrett had five straight points to open the final period, which started with the Knicks ahead just 82-75. By the time the Knicks hit three consecutive 3-pointers to end their spurt, it was 100-77.

— Cade Cunningham scored 18 of his career-high 29 points in the third quarter to help the Detroit Pistons erase a 22-point deficit and beat the Utah Jazz 126-116 on Monday night. Saddiq Bey added 29 points for Detroit, which is 4-2 in 2022 after finishing 2021 with 18 losses in 19 games. Lead assistant coach Rex Kalamian took charge with coach Dwane Casey having entered COVID-19 protocol. Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points for Utah, and Hassan Whiteside had a season-high 21 points as well as 14 rebounds. 

— Jaylen Brown scored 26 points and Jayson Tatum had 24, carrying the Boston Celtics to a 101-98 overtime victory over the Indiana Pacers in the first of a home-and-home series between the teams. Robert Williams III had 14 points and 12 rebounds for Boston, including a key block in OT. The Celtics won for the fourth time in six games. Torrey Craig led the Pacers with 19 points and Lance Stephenson scored 14 but missed a potential tying 3-pointer late in OT. Indiana has lost seven of eight. Pacers scoring leader Domantas Sabonis was held to 11 points.

Nuggets trade Bol Bol to Pistons for McGruder, draft pick

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets finalized a trade with Detroit that will send big man Bol Bol to the Pistons. The Nuggets acquired guard Rodney McGruder along with a 2022 second-round pick via Brooklyn in exchange. The 7-foot-2 Bol is the son of the late Manute Bol, who played 10 years in the NBA.

Bol Bol played in 53 games over three seasons with the Nuggets and averaged 2.7 points.

McGruder saw action in 17 games for the Pistons this season. He averaged 2.5 points and 1.6 rebounds. 

Georgia snaps 41-year title drought with 33-18 win over Bama

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Stetson Bennett delivered the biggest throws of his storybook career and Georgia's defense sealed the sweetest victory in program history, vanquishing rival Alabama 33-18 to win the College Football Playoff title game. The Bulldogs won their first national title in 41 yards. 

Bennett connected with Adonai Mitchell on a 40-yard touchdown to give Georgia a 19-18 lead with 8:09 left. He then hooked up with Brock Bowers for a 15-yard TD on a screen to put the Bulldogs up with with 3:33 left. 

The final blow came from the defense. Kelee Ringo intercepted an underthrown deep ball down the sideline by Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young and returned 79 yards for a touchdown. 

Coaches fired in Miami, Chicago, Minnesota

UNDATED (AP) — Back-to-back winning seasons were not enough for Brian Flores to keep his job as coach of the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins have fired Flores in a somewhat surprising move that came less than 24 hours after the team finished a 9-8 season. 

Flores went 24-25 in his three seasons in Miami, not making the playoffs in any of those seasons, but finishing this year with eight wins in the final nine games. Miami started 0-7 in his first season, 1-3 last season and 1-7 this season. But it always found ways to get better as the season went along, going 20-8 in games played in November, December and January under Flores.

— The Chicago Bears have fired general manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy, hoping new leadership in the front office and on the sideline will lift a struggling franchise. Nagy's fate seemed sealed as Bears struggled through a 6-11 season that ended with a loss at Minnesota on Sunday. Nagy went 34-31 in four seasons.

— The Minnesota Vikings have fired general manager Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer. The move comes after a second straight absence from the playoffs. Owner Mark Wilf said the Vikings will first choose a new general manager who will have input into the head coach hire.

— Dave Gettleman is retiring as the general manager of the New York Giants after four losing seasons and ending this season with a record of 4-and-13. Coach Joe Judge's future with the Giants also is in question. He'll meet with ownership this week. 

— The Jacksonville Jaguars' 3-and-14 record this season earned them the top spot in April's NFL draft, the second consecutive year they will pick first. The tentative order of the first round, not including teams in the playoffs, was announced Monday by the NFL. 

— Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Geno Smith has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following the team's season-ending victory in Arizona. Smith just completed his third season with the Seahawks and had the most extensive playing time of his tenure in Seattle. He appeared in four games and started three when Russell Wilson was out due to finger surgery. 

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — College Football Playoff expansion talks remain stalled and the possibility of implementing a new format by the 2024 season have dimmed after three days of meetings failed to produce an agreement. 

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says it is looking unlikely that expansion would come before the end of the current CFP contract that expires in 2026, it was not ruled out altogether.

Executive Director Bill Hancock says the talks are going into overtime and the conference commissioners are expected to meet again the coming week. 

— Late Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam of Colorado and two-time runner-up Andrew Luck of Stanford headline a list of 21 former players and coaches in this year's College Football Hall of Fame class. The National Football Foundation announced the new inductees Monday. The induction ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 6. 

UNDATED (AP) — Baylor is once again the unanimous No. 1 in The Associated Press men's college basketball poll, and fifth-ranked Southern California climbed to its highest ranking in nearly five decades. 

Gonzaga, UCLA, Auburn and USC rounded out the top five. The Trojans have their highest ranking since December 1974. No. 25 Illinois rejoined the poll as the week's lone addition.

Djokovic resumes training after winning court fight

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic has returned to the tennis court for training, having won a legal battle to stay in Australia and play in the Australian Open after his exemption from strict coronavirus vaccine rules was questioned. But the government is still threatening to cancel his visa and deport him. 

The unvaccinated tennis star was released after being confined to an immigration hotel for four nights. 

Djokovic wants to play in the Australian Open so he can try to break the men's career record for most Grand Slam titles he currently shares with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Hall of Fame receiver Don Maynard dead at age 86

UNDATED (AP) — Don Maynard, a Hall of Fame receiver who made his biggest impact catching passes from Joe Namath in the wide-open AFL, has died. He was 86.

Maynard was the main target for Namath with the New York Jets, though a leg injury made him less effective in the team's stunning upset of the NFL champion Baltimore Colts in the 1969 Super Bowl. When he retired in 1973 after one season with the St. Louis Cardinals, he was pro football's career receiving leader with 633 catches for 11,834 yards and 88 touchdowns.

Flores went 24-25 in his three seasons in Miami, not making the playoffs in any of those seasons, but finishing this year with eight wins in the final nine games. Miami started 0-7 in his first season, 1-3 last season and 1-7 this season.
