HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 25 Dragons (26-5) used the first seven minutes of Tuesday's quarterfinal to set the tone against Dodge City (19-13).

The Conqs averaged nearly one turnover per minute in the first five minutes of play. Hutchinson took a commanding lead at 16-4 with 3:19 left in the first quarter.&nbsp;

Dodge City chipped away at the deficit and entered the locker room down eight. The Blue Dragons shot 58.8% in the third quarter to extend that lead to 15.

Dodge City committed 23 turnovers that the Dragons turned into 26 points.&nbsp;

Hutchinson shot 46.7% for the game while holding Dodge City to 35.7%.

Mel Kailahi could not be stopped as she poured in 17 points on 8 of 12 shooting. She added seven rebounds and three steals.&nbsp;

Mya Williams (16) and Tor'e Alford (14) also scored in double digits. Alford also had seven rebounds.&nbsp;

Jada Burton led the Conqs with 14 points and seven rebounds.&nbsp;

UNDATED (AP) — The Big Ten plans to take a group of athletes from member schools on a three-day trip to civil rights sites in Alabama this summer as part of a conference-wide program exploring race relations and social justice. The July 15-17 trip will be funded by the Big Ten as part of a program designed to provide additional educational experiences for athletes. Conferences across the country have developed social justice initiatives in the aftermath of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis in 2020. The Big Ten trip to civil rights sites is the first of its kind.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Major League Baseball has extended its deadline for reaching a labor deal to Tuesday at 5 p.m. for salvaging opening day as scheduled on March 31.

Locked-out players and team owners engaged in a series of intense negotiations that began Monday and stretched into early Tuesday morning as the sides attempted to forge the path to an agreement. They halted talks for the night around 2:30 a.m. and planned to resume at 11 a.m. Players and owners made progress toward an agreement but remained far apart on key issues. But after months of talks in fits and starts, the sides shifted into possible deal-making mode.

— Derek Jeter announced a surprise departure from the Miami Marlins after 4 1/2 mostly unsuccessful years that didn't come remotely close to matching his success as a player for the New York Yankees. Jeter became CEO of the Marlins in September 2017 when Bruce Sherman bought the team from Jeffrey Loria. Miami went 218-327 during his four seasons at the helm, finishing with a winning record only once at 31-29 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

— The New York Yankees have hired Hensley Meulens as assistant hitting coach after the crosstown Mets poached Eric Chávez from the same position last month. Meulens played for the Yankees from 1989-93 at the start of a seven-year major league career, then won three World Series titles over 10 seasons as a bench coach and hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants.

Jrue Holiday had 21 points and eight assists, and Bobby Portis added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks. LaMelo Ball scored 24 points to lead Charlotte. 

— Karl-Anthony Towns hit a 3-pointer with 11.8 seconds left and the Minnesota Timberwolves survived Cleveland's comeback for a 127-122 win over the Cavaliers. Towns' first 3 of the game helped the Timberwolves hang on after blowing a 23-point third-quarter lead. 

— Scottie Barnes made his first 11 shots and had 28 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, leading the Toronto Raptors to a 133-97 victory over the Brooklyn Nets in the opener of a home-and-home series. Blown out by Charlotte and Atlanta in their first two games after the All-Star break.

— Wendell Carter Jr. had 21 points and 12 rebounds, and eight Orlando players scored in double figures as the Magic beat the Indiana Pacers 119-103. Tyrese Haliburton had 23 points and seven assists for the Pacers, and Buddy Hield added 18 points. The game marked the return of Magic guard Markelle Fultz, who tore his left ACL almost 14 months ago. 

—DeAaron Fox had 29 points and 10 assists, and the Sacramento Kings rolled past the Oklahoma City Thunder 131-110. Trey Lyles scored 24 points, Harrison Barnes scored 23 and Domantas Sabonis added 14 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists for the Kings. Sacramento snapped a four-game losing streak.

UNDATED (AP) — Brooklyn coach Steve Nash doesn't expect Ben Simmons to practice this week, making it unlikely the former 76ers star will be ready to play when the Nets visit Philadelphia on March 10. The Nets are hopeful Kevin Durant will return from his left knee sprain later this week, but it appears Simmons is still a ways off after not playing at all this season. His back began bothering him as he tried to increase his workload.

— The Washington Wizards have signed guard Tomas Satoransky. Satoransky was waived by San Antonio on Saturday. The 6-foot-7 Satoransky returns to the team he spent his first three NBA seasons with from 2016-19. He was drafted by the Wizards in the second round in 2012, then played three seasons in Spain. In his three seasons with Washington, Satoransky averaged 6.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. 

Maple Leafs hand Capitals sixth consecutive home loss 5-3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rasmus Sandin scored the go-ahead goal with 3:23 left, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Capitals 5-3, handing Washington a sixth consecutive home loss and third overall. The Capitals bounced back after falling behind less than three minutes in, and dug out of a 3-1 hole to tie it in the third period on Tom Wilson's second goal of the game. 

Vitek Vanecek stopped the first 16 shots he faced in relief of Ilya Samsonov, but couldn't make a save on Sandin's shot after young defenseman Martin Fehervary was stripped of the puck in the corner. 

— Jack Hughes had a goal and an assist to win a showdown with his older brother, and the New Jersey Devils routed the Vancouver Canucks 7-2. Nico Daws made 36 saves and the Devils scored three times in each of the first two periods, chasing goaltender Jaroslav Halak with six goals on 14 shots. 

—Jake DeBrusk got his first career hat trick early in his first four-point game, and Patrice Bergeron added a goal and two assists in the Boston Bruins' 7-0 rout of the Los Angeles Kings. Erik Haula scored two goals and Jeremy Swayman made 34 saves in his fifth career shutout for the Bruins. Their fifth straight victory matched their longest winning streak of the season. 

UNDATED (AP) — Adam Flagler and James Akinjo each scored 19 points to send No. 3 Baylor over No. 21 Texas 68-61 on Monday night, as the Bears spoiled the final Longhorns men's game in the 45-year-old Frank Erwin Center.

Gonzaga, Arizona remain atop poll amid big changes

UNDATED (AP) — The top six — and seven of the top 10 — teams in the AP Top 25 lost on the same day last week, both records. The single day of chaos led to some big changes in this week's poll — everywhere but at the top. 

Gonzaga and Arizona remained the top two teams in the poll released Monday, holding steady despite both losing their most recent games. The Zags received 43 first-place votes from a 61-person media panel after being a unanimous pick last week. 

No. 3 Baylor had four first-place votes and No. 4 Duke picked up 11. Auburn rounded out the top five.

GENEVA (AP) — The International Olympic Committee has made a sweeping move to isolate and condemn Russia over the country's invasion of Ukraine.

The IOC has urged others to exclude Russian athletes and officials from international events. The IOC says the move is needed to "protect the integrity of global sports competitions and for the safety of all the participants." It opens the way for FIFA to exclude Russia from a World Cup soccer qualifying playoff match on March 24. Poland already has refused to play the scheduled game against Russia. The IOC's call also applied to athletes and officials from Belarus because that country has abetted Russia's invasion.

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina who is seeded No. 1 at the Monterrey Open does not want to face Russian opponent Anastasia Potapova at the Mexican tournament unless tennis's governing bodies follow the International Olympic Committee's lead and insist that players from Russia and Belarus are only identified as "neutral athletes" and only if they bar those competitors from using any national symbols, colors, flags or anthems.

Briles out at Grambling less than 1 week after being hired

UNDATED (AP)— Art Briles is out as Grambling State's offense coordinator, less than one week after the disgraced former Baylor coach was surprisingly hired. Briles has been a pariah in college football since 2016, when he was fired by Baylor after an investigation concluded he and his staff took no action against players named in sexual assault allegations. 

Briles said in a statement Monday that he felt his "continued presence will be a distraction to you and your team." ESPN first reported that Briles would not coach at Grambling. It wasn't immediately clear whether Grambling asked Briles to resign or the coach did so on his own.

LONDON (AP) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play in the NFL's first regular-season game in Germany this year and the Green Bay Packers are traveling abroad for the first time. 

The league says the Bucs will host the inaugural game in Munich next season but their opponents and the date for the game have yet to be announced. The Packers and the New Orleans Saints are the designated home teams for two games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The Jacksonville Jaguars will host a game at Wembley Stadium. 

The Arizona Cardinals will play a game at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

— The Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars will open the 2022 NFL preseason schedule on Aug. 4 in the Hall of Fame game. Former Raiders receiver Cliff Branch and defensive lineman Richard Seymour will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 6, as will ex-Jaguars tackle Tony Boselli. 

— A group of former team owners and executives from the original USFL is suing Fox Sports to halt the launch of the new spring football league with the same name. They allege the new USFL is inappropriately using the old league's branding. The suit filed in California on Monday alleges trademark infringement by the new league and requests an injunction to block its launch in April. The original USFL played games from 1983 to 1985, and the group suing the new league alleges Fox Sports and its partners didn't properly obtain use of the league's trademarks and other intellectual property.

UNDATED (AP) — Daniil Medvedev (med-VYEH'-dyev) officially has moved up to No. 1 in the ATP rankings. He overtakes Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) to become the 27th man to hold the top spot since computerized rankings began in 1973. 

Medvedev is a 26-year-old from Russia who won last year's U.S. Open and was the runner-up at this year's Australian Open. He rises from No. 2 this week. 

Djokovic slides down one place after having participated in only one tournament in 2022 because he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19. He was deported from Australia and not allowed to try to defend his title at Melbourne Park because he isn't inoculated.

DeChambeau withdraws from Bay Hill to avoid risking setback

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau won't be at Bay Hill to defend his title. He says on Instagram that he is not 100% healthy and doesn't want to risk aggravating hip and hand injuries by playing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

DeChambeau says he's been able to hit golf balls in a simulator but that it doesn't feel comfortable. He says he needs another week off.

WACO, Texas – For the second-straight day, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team had No. 1 McLennan Community College on the ropes.

For the second-straight day, the Highlanders exploded in the eighth inning and came back to defeat Hutchinson and sweep the three-game series.

The Blue Dragons led by five runs at the seventh-inning stretch, but the Highlanders rallied to defeat Hutchinson 9-7 on Monday at Bosque River Ballpark.

Hutchinson falls to 4-5 overall heading into the 2022 home opener against Coffeyville in a doubleheader on Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field. McLennan (10-5) was the preseason No. 1 team in the NJCAA this season, but dropped to No. 8 in the first regular-season poll, which was released during the game.

Sophomore Ben McLaughlin had four RBIs in going 3 for 5 with a double and home run. Jack Torosian was 2 for 5 for the Blue Dragons, who out-hit McLennan 9-7.

McLaughlin gave the Blue Dragons a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, to right field. The Dragons extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Sterling Sutcliffe scored on a Cade Baker double.

Leading 3-2 after six innings, the Blue Dragons erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh. McLaughlin drove in Bryce Logan and Torosian with a double down the right-field line. McLaughlin later scored on a balk. The Dragons took a 7-2 lead when Booga de la Garza singled home Kael Babin.

McLennan scored a single run in the seventh and then took advantage of three walks, two hit batsmen an error and a balk as the Highlanders scored six runs on just two hits in the eighth inning to take a 9-7 lead.

Bad weekend for top teams leaves KU at No. 6

CHICAGO (AP) — Jordan Kyrou, Pavel Buchnevich and David Perron scored during St. Louis' dominant second period, and the Blues beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-0 for their fourth straight win. Perron tacked on a third-period goal in the opener of a four-game trip. Brayden Schenn had two assists for St. Louis, and Jordan Binnington made 30 saves in his second shutout of the season. The Blues improved to 3-0-1 against the Blackhawks, closing out their season series. Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 stops for Chicago, turning away several quality chances for St. Louis.

COLLEGE STATION, Pa. (AP) — Freshman Bryce McGowens poured in 25 points and Nebraska rolled to a 93-70 victory over Penn State.' McGowens sank 8 of 13 shots from the floor with three first-half 3-pointers and made all six of his free throws for the Cornhuskers (8-21, 2-16 Big Ten Conference), who snapped a four-game skid. He added six rebounds. Alonzo Verge Jr. pitched in with 15 points and five assists. McGowens hit three 3-pointers and had 13 points, Verge sank two 3s and had 12 and Derrick Walker scored all 10 of his points to spark Nebraska to a 49-31 lead at halftime. Seth Lundy, Jalen Pickett and Sam Sessoms all scored 12 for Penn State (12-14, 7-11).&nbsp;

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caitlin Clark had 38 points and 11 assists and No. 21 Iowa clinched a share of the Big Ten championship with a 104-80 win over No. 6 Michigan. It's the first conference regular-season title for the Hawkeyes (20-7, 14-4 Big Ten) since 2008, who shared the championship with Ohio State. Clark, who came into the game as the nation's leading scorer at 27.1 points per game, had a career-high 46 points against the Wolverines in a 98-90 loss on February 6. She was just as effective in this game, hitting 11 of 18 shots from the field, including 8 of 11 in 3-pointers.

GAINSVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Hayley Frank scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Missouri to a 78-73 upset of No. 15 Florida to close the regular season. Izzy Higginbottom added 15 off the bench for the for the Tigers and Mama Dembele scored 13. The Tigers scored their last 12 points from the foul line, starting with Frank's three-point play, with 2:22 to play that made it 67-57, on 15 attempts. Higginbottom was 8 for 8 and Dembele, a 59% shooter, 9 of 10 as Missouri went 14 of 17 in the fourth quarter and 25 of 29 for the game. Jordyn Merritt had all of her career-high 23 points in the second half while KiKi Smith had 13 of her 15 in the fourth quarter for the Gators.

ATLANTA (AP) — Luiz Araujo and Dom Dwyer scored first-half goals and 17-year-old homegrown forward Caleb Wiley scored in his debut to spark Atlanta United to a 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City in a Major League Soccer opener. Luiz Araujo staked Atlanta United to a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 20th minute. Dwyer added his in the 45th minute. Daniel Salloi's goal in the 85th minute pulled Sporting KC (0-1-0) within a goal. Wiley's first career goal came 4 minutes later to cap the scoring. Josef Martinez had two assists for the victors.

UNDATED (AP) — The madness arrived early this year. An unpredictable college basketball season took an unprecedented turn Saturday when the top six teams and seven of the top 10 teams lost. Gonzaga, Arizona, Auburn, Purdue, Kansas and Kentucky all went down. That marked the first time since The Associated Press began compiling a ranking during the 1948-1949 season that the top six teams lost on the same day. No. 9 Texas Tech also lost to set another record for most top-10 teams losing in one day. Only No. 7 Duke and No. 10 Baylor won, the Bears over the fifth-ranked Jayhawks. No. 8 Villanova avoided the carnage by default — the Wildcats don't play again until Tuesday.

UNDATED (AP) — The NBA-leading Phoenix Suns are just 1-2 since losing All-Star guard Chris Paul to a broken thumb.

After scathing report, NCAA makes changes for March Madness

UNDATED (AP) —A year after the NCAA got called out for gender inequities between its men's and women's basketball tournaments, the organization has made changes over the past six months to make the events more equitable. 

Many of the changes so far have been relatively easy to do. The women's tournament field expanded to 68 teams and also will use the phrase "March Madness" in branding and social media. The NCAA has spent millions more on the women's tournament this year to make it more financially equal to the men. 

—The Big Ten plans to take a group of athletes from member schools on a three-day trip to civil rights sites in Alabama this summer as part of a conference-wide program exploring race relations and social justice. The July 15-17 trip will be funded by the Big Ten as part of a program designed to provide additional educational experiences for athletes. Conferences across the country have developed social justice initiatives in the aftermath of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis in 2020. 

UNDATED (AP) — Illinois still has a decent shot at grabbing the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten men's basketball tournament.

Kofi Cockburn and Alfonso Plummer combined for 53 points as 15th-ranked Illinois outscored Michigan, 93-85.

Cockburn delivered 27 points in helping the Illinois get within one game of Wisconsin for the Big Ten lead. Plummer provided 23 of his 26 points by halftime for the Illini, who saw a 15-point, second-half lead cut to two in the closing minutes. Trent Frazier hit a 3-pointer with 45.3 seconds left to put Illinois up by seven.

Also in the Big Ten, Fatts Russell matched his career high with 27 points as Maryland knocked off No. 22 Ohio State, 75-60. UNDATED (AP) — The Carolina Hurricanes have strengthened their hold on first place in the NHL's Metropolitan Division by earning their fifth straight win.

— The Jets ended a four-game skid as Kyle Connor scored twice in the third period of their 5-3 decision over the Coyotes. FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson held off Austin Dillon and Daniel Suarez in a tense finish to win at Fontana for the second time.

After starting at the rear under penalty, Larson raced to his 17th career victory and the 11th in his year-plus at Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. 

Larson had victory in sight with eight laps to go when Chase Elliott spun and forced a race-record 12th caution. Elliott had a beef with his Hendrick teammate several laps earlier when he got pinched into the wall by Larson, who apologized for it on the radio.

Dillon came in second and Suarez slipped to fourth behind Erik Jones as Chevrolets took the top four spots.

McLaughlin wins 1st IndyCar race in St. Pete season opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Scott McLaughlin got his first IndyCar Series victory in the season-opening race through the downtown streets of St. Petersburg, Florida. 

McLaughlin led 49 of the 100 laps but had to hold off reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou over the closing laps to secure the victory. Will Power finished third to put two Team Penske drivers on the podium.

McLaughlin is the three-time Australian V8 Supercars champion but struggled as an IndyCar rookie last season. 

Augusta on his mind: Straka rallies to win the Honda Classic

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Sepp Straka was able to capture the PGA's Honda Classic despite trailing by five strokes entering the final round.

Straka is the first Austrian winner in PGA Tour history after firing a 4-under 66 that left him 10 under.

Shane Lowry shot a third straight 67 but fell one shot back.

First-round leader Kurt Kitayama was alone in third at 8 under.

Jimenez's second ace propels him to Cologuard Classic win

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP)— Miguel Angel Jimenez had his second hole-in-one of the tournament and closed with a 7-under 65 to win the Cologuard Classic. Jimenez started the final round with a two-shot lead and got off to a birdie-eagle start at Tucson National. 

The 58-year-old Spaniard ended any hope of a late rally with an ace on the 178-yard, par-3 14th to match the one he had at No. 7 in the opening round. Jimenez closed with four straight pars to finish at 18-under and win for the second time in three PGA Tour Champions starts this season.

FIFA: No World Cup qualifying ban yet; Russia to play as RFU

UNDATED (AP) — Sweden's soccer federation has maintained its objection to playing any matches against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine and expressed its disappointment with FIFA (FEE'-fah) for keeping the Russians in World Cup qualifying. 

Sweden's official stance comes a day after Poland and the Czech Republic declared they would not be accepting FIFA's attempted compromise in ordering Russia to play without its flag and anthem at neutral venues under the name of its federation. Russia is scheduled to play Poland in the World Cup playoff semifinals on March 24 for the right to host Sweden or the Czech Republic five days later.

— The English Football Association announced that its national teams would refuse to play Russia for the "foreseeable future." Russia has qualified for the Women's European Championship which is being hosted by England in June.

Qatar deploys ex-spies to blunt World Cup criticism

DIEZ, Germany (AP) — The government of Qatar (KUH'-tur) paid more than $10 million to a company staffed by former CIA operatives for a multi-year covert operation aimed at silencing critics of the decision to award the 2022 World Cup to the wealthy Gulf nation. That's according to internal company documents reviewed by The Associated Press. 

The records show that the primary target of the operation was the head of the German soccer federation, Theo Zwanziger, who publicly attacked Qatar's poor human rights record and pushed for the World Cup to be moved.

Matchups set for Tuesday Region VI Quarterfinals

WACO, Texas – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team was nearly no-hit in Game 1 and let a late lead slip away in Game 2 of a doubleheader against the top-ranked junior college baseball team in the nation on Sunday.

The Blue Dragons lost the first two games of a three-game series with No. 1 McLennan 8-0 and 5-2 at Bosque River Ballpark. The final game of the series will be at Noon on Monday.

The Blue Dragons fall to 4-4 overall, McLennan is 9-5-1 overall.

The Blue Dragons took a 2-1 lead into the eighth when the Highlanders grabbed the lead on one swing of the bat when Cole Fontenelle hit a line-drive grand slam to right field to give McClennan a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Blue Dragons scored single runs in the third and fifth innings.

With two out in the third, Jack Torosian was hit with a pitch and took second on a Ben McLaughlin single. Torosian then scored on a Jon Jenkins single to right field for a 1-0 lead. McClennan immediate tied the game in the bottom of the third with a triple and RBI groundout.

Kael Babin led off the fifth inning with a walk. He then stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball for a 2-1 lead.

The Dragons missed a great scoring chance in the seventh when Bryce Logan and Daniel Bebee started the inning with a single and walk, respectively, and moved up to third on a Babin sacrifice bunt. The Dragons, who stranded eight runners on base, left Logan and Bebee in scoring position.

Hutchinson starting pitcher Jack Whitlock had a strong start in getting a no decision. Whitlock went six full innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run with a walk and three strikeouts.

Chase Torkelson (1-1) suffered the loss with two innings of work

McLennan starter Will Carsten carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the Highlanders’ 8-0 victory in Game 1.

With one out in the seventh, Jenkins singled to right field to break up the no-hit bid. Carsten tossed a complete game, going seven innings and striking out 11. Carsten retired 14 Dragons in a row before Jenkins’ single. The only other baserunners for the Blue Dragons were McLaughlin in the first (hit by pitch) and Cade Baker in the second (error)

Jackson Blue (1-2) worked just 1 1-3 inning allowing just one hit, but six earned runs and four walks. Ryan Schlotzhauer went 2-3 innings.

Michael Uhler worked four innings shutout innings with three strikeouts. HE allowed only two walks and one hit batsmen and coaxed a pair of double plays.
