Sports Headlines for Friday

Thursday marked the final Chiefs training camp practice before the first preseason game at Chicago this Saturday.

Thursday was the 13th camp practice, lasting for just over two hours, as the team practiced in full pads on a warm, but not unbearable morning.

Head coach Andy Reid confirmed that each quarterback will play one quarter. So, it's safe to assume most of the starters won't play much, if at all, after the first quarter.

Reid says preseason serves several purposes - mainly getting the starters reacclimated and letting newer players prove their worth.

"There's a balance there with letting the ones (starters) get a little bit of work," Reid said. "The guys that are going to play in the game, and still have the competition at certain positions, and most of all, get the young guys a look."

Patrick Mahomes has gone through an NFL preseason five times already. He says that first hit you take from an opponent usually gets you in the right mindset.

"I like to get hit like one time," Mahomes said. "Once you get hit one time, you kind of see what it's like to get hit again as a quarterback. I feel like after that, you're good to go. It'll be good to get in there with the new group of receivers we have, all of the running backs and show how we do it in the game."

It's becoming more of a possibility that Ronald Jones may not make the 53-man roster.

Jones took reps with the fourth-team offense Thursday, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Jerick McKinnon and Isiah Pacheco rotating in on first-team.

Jones, a fifth-year pro signed in free agency by the Chiefs in March, had over 2,800 all-purpose yards and 19 total touchdowns in four seasons at Tampa Bay. So, it's a little hard to believe he'll be on the outside looking in.

As for Pacheco, a rookie and seventh-round draft pick out of Rutgers, Mahomes, when asked about Pacheco specifically, says he's impressed with what Pacheco has brought to the table.

"(Pacheco) has all of the physical tools," Mahomes said. "He's been mentally great at practice. So, it'll be exciting to see him in the game where you get to go out there and make stuff happen."

Justin Reid - not the starting kicker

While Reid is expected to make a significant impact as a starting safety this season, many have wondered about his starting kicking abilities after he drilled a 65-yard field goal at the end of Sunday's practice.

He then shanked one bad from about 52 yards out on Tuesday. Reid, mostly jokingly clarified, that Harrison Butker is still the go-to place kicker.

"I know there's a lot of chatter or whatever about kicker one," Reid said. "Harrison is obviously kicker one, guys. Put that to bed right now. But, if he ever wants a play off, and wants to take a break, I got his back."

Receivers Jody Forston and Daurice Fountain, along with defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth, were all back to work Thursday. Forston had been out since July 30.

Receiver Omar Bayless left practice early with a lower back issue. Frank Clark was absent Thursday due to illness. Zayne Anderson (shoulder), Lucas Niang (knee) and Gary Jennings (concussion) also didn't practice.

The Chiefs will be back in St. Joseph for practice Monday with camp wrapping up next Thursday.

NJCAA and ESPN Strike Multi-Year Agreement

DYERSVILLE, Iowa — When Frank Thomas and his partners purchased the “Field of Dreams” movie site a year ago, they outlined a wide range of plans for the rural Iowa tourist attraction.

They hoped to turn it into a youth baseball and softball complex that one day would also have&nbsp;a hotel.

But one thing it won't include next year: a&nbsp;Major League Baseball game.

Thomas said MLB won’t be back in 2023 for another regular season game at the specially constructed stadium near the iconic diamond from the 1989 film, though it remains possible that games will return in&nbsp;future&nbsp;years.

Construction on the youth complex that Thomas' company is building begins later this year and&nbsp;will prevent MLB from making a return for a third straight season.

“It’s a lot going on,” Thomas told the Des Moines Register on Wednesday in Dyersville. “They don’t want to come back if the stadium’s not prepared.”

Future MLB games at the site could be a key to its profitability.&nbsp;A feasibility study funded by Travel Dubuque projected the site would&nbsp;draw 136,000 visitors a year, create 81 jobs, host 62 events&nbsp;and generate&nbsp;$9.1 million in investment in the first year after the stadium is built.

However, the study projects that about two-thirds of the stadium's economic impact would&nbsp;come from an annual MLB Field of Dreams game, and the league has not guaranteed a game beyond Thursday, when the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs will play.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — MJ Melendez hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning to send the Kansas City Royals past the Chicago White Sox 8-3 on Wednesday night.

Melendez and Salvador Perez both had three hits and two RBI for the Royals. Kyle Isbel drove in two runs and scored twice.

After leading all minor leaguers with 41 home runs last year, Melendez has 14 in 81 big league games this season. The left-handed-hitting rookie sent a pitch from lefty reliever Jake Diekman (5-2) into the right-field bullpen to give Kansas City a 4-3 lead.

Sports Headlines for Wednesday

The Kansas City Chiefs had ideal conditions for a two-hour, fully padded practice Tuesday.

The Chiefs practiced under sunny skies with temperatures right around 70 to start the day. The best news of the day for the team was the return of corner Rashad Fenton to the practice field.

Fenton received shoulder surgery in the offseason and was inactive for OTAs and mandatory minicamp, and he was on the physically unable to perform list for the first 11 camp practices.

Now that he's back on the field, Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt says Fenton will slowly be reacclimated.

"He'll get a couple of the one-on-one (drills) and after that, we'll just continue to matriculate into all of the other periods," Merritt said. "It's been great having him back and he's been great in the classroom for us."

Fenton appeared in 14 games and started eight of them last year, recording seven pass deflections and 49 total tackles. He joins a stacked room of talent, including rookie corner Trent McDuffie and third-year pro L'Jarius Sneed, who Fenton played behind last season.

With Charvarius Ward no longer on the team, Fenton will likely play a key role in the defensive backfield, but he certainly has competition. Rookies Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams are also competing for time.

Many of Andy Reid’s assistants and support staff took to the podium following Tuesday’s practice. Back on the staff this year is Matt Nagy - senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach.

He was formerly the offensive coordinator in Kansas City from 2013-2017 and then head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018-2021 before getting fired in February.

Being back in KC, Nagy says it’s been great getting reacquainted, and he credited Reid, Eric Bieniemy, Patrick Mahomes and general manager Brett Veach for the success they’ve had since he’s been gone.

"We work together and we help each other out," Nagy said. "There's zero egos. It is kind of like riding a bicycle, but at the point in time, we're all in this for one reason. Zero egos and we're here to win. That's it."

Nagy was brought back to the Chiefs in February, filling the shoes of Mike Kafka, who left to be offensive coordinator for the Giants.

"The last four years of me not being here and what Coach Reid, Veach, Patrick and (Bieniemy) and the rest of this group has done is nothing short of amazing," Nagy commented. "We had a lot of good times up to that point and now I'm back. I appreciate that and it means a lot to me."

The Chiefs added 50 new players to their roster this offseason, and those newcomers are trying to find their way onto the 53-man active roster.

Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi is in his 14th year with the team. He says camp is always exciting, but he’s eager to see these new players get their first in-game experience on Saturday during the preseason game in Chicago.

"Excited about this weekend," Borgonzi said. "Another exciting opportunity for these guys to come out and showcase what they can do and compete. Great opportunity for us to kind of evaluate them in game conditions now."

The Chiefs play at the Bears this Saturday at noon central - the first of three preseason games Kansas City will play this month.

Several Chiefs rookies have had productive camps. Running back Isiah Pacheco and receiver Skyy Moore probably top the list, but the aforementioned McDuffie and Joshua Williams are certainly there.

Borgonzi also mentioned seventh-round pick and corner Jaylen Watson as someone making an impact.

"Watson is a bigger corner who can run," he said. "Even (rookie safety) Nazeeh (Johnson) is somebody who ran a (4.35-second 40-yard dash). They have these traits. When you're looking for those traits, what's the characteristics that's going to make them work? They all kind of have that. They all tried to get better every year in college."

Pacheco - confirmed kick returner. McDuffie punt returner?

Special teams coach Dave Toub mentioned about a week ago that Pacheco would be the starting kick returner for the Chiefs' first preseason game, and he reaffirmed that decision Tuesday, with that first game now just four days away.

"We're going to give him every chance to be that guy," Toub said of Pacheco. "I just think he has all of the attributes of being a good kick returner and he's gotten better and better at practice. He's doing little things better, he's catching the ball great."

At punt return, Mecole Hardman has been taking reps at that spot. He's been the go-to guy there for the past three seasons. Toub likes Moore and McDuffie back there as well.

"McDuffie is the best punt catcher we have," Toub remarked.

Justin Reid as backup kicker? Maybe one day.

Justin Reid went viral when he knocked through a 65-yard field goal after practice on Sunday.

Toward the end of a special teams session Tuesday, Toub decided to let Reid try again. This time, from about 52 yards. It was&nbsp;well&nbsp;short and shanked to the left.

"I wanted to surprise (Reid)," Toub said. "I saw him hanging out. He's always hanging out at the field goal drill. So, I wanted to surprise him and see how he would handle it. I don't think we found our backup kicker yet. But, he has a strong leg so we'll keep seeing what he can do."

The one new injury to report Tuesday is that of defensive back Zayne Anderson, who left practice around 9:30 a.m. It was later disclosed that he has a shoulder injury. No word yet on how serious.

Receiver Daurice Fountain (groin), tight end Jody Forston (quad), defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (knee) and receiver Gary Jennings (concussion) did not practice Tuesday. Offensive lineman Lucas Niang (knee) is still on the PUP list.

The Chiefs have the day off from practice Wednesday, will be back Thursday and then travel to Chicago Friday.

The team practices Monday - Thursday of next week, with August 18 being the last day of camp.

 </figure>By TOMMY REZACSt. Joseph PostThe Kansas City Chiefs had ideal conditions for a two-hour, fully padded practice Tuesday.The Chiefs practiced under sunny skies with temperatures right around 70 to start the day. The best news of the day for the team was the return of corner Rashad Fenton to the practice field.Fenton received shoulder surgery in the offseason and was inactive for OTAs and mandatory minicamp, and he was on the physically unable to perform list for the first 11 camp practices.Now that he's back on the field, Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt says Fenton will slowly be reacclimated."He'll get a couple of the one-on-one (drills) and after that, we'll just continue to matriculate into all of the other periods," Merritt said. "It's been great having him back and he's been great in the classroom for us."Fenton appeared in 14 games and started eight of them last year, recording seven pass deflections and 49 total tackles. He joins a stacked room of talent, including rookie corner Trent McDuffie and third-year pro L'Jarius Sneed, who Fenton played behind last season.With Charvarius Ward no longer on the team, Fenton will likely play a key role in the defensive backfield, but he certainly has competition. Rookies Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams are also competing for time.Many of Andy Reid’s assistants and support staff took to the podium following Tuesday’s practice. Back on the staff this year is Matt Nagy - senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach.He was formerly the offensive coordinator in Kansas City from 2013-2017 and then head coach of the Chicago Bears from 2018-2021 before getting fired in February.Being back in KC, Nagy says it’s been great getting reacquainted, and he credited Reid, Eric Bieniemy, Patrick Mahomes and general manager Brett Veach for the success they’ve had since he’s been gone."We work together and we help each other out," Nagy said. "There's zero egos. It is kind of like riding a bicycle, but at the point in time, we're all in this for one reason. Zero egos and we're here to win. That's it."Nagy was brought back to the Chiefs in February, filling the shoes of Mike Kafka, who left to be offensive coordinator for the Giants."The last four years of me not being here and what Coach Reid, Veach, Patrick and (Bieniemy) and the rest of this group has done is nothing short of amazing," Nagy commented. "We had a lot of good times up to that point and now I'm back. I appreciate that and it means a lot to me."New players making an impactThe Chiefs added 50 new players to their roster this offseason, and those newcomers are trying to find their way onto the 53-man active roster.Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi is in his 14th year with the team. He says camp is always exciting, but he’s eager to see these new players get their first in-game experience on Saturday during the preseason game in Chicago."Excited about this weekend," Borgonzi said. "Another exciting opportunity for these guys to come out and showcase what they can do and compete. Great opportunity for us to kind of evaluate them in game conditions now."The Chiefs play at the Bears this Saturday at noon central - the first of three preseason games Kansas City will play this month.Several Chiefs rookies have had productive camps. Running back Isiah Pacheco and receiver Skyy Moore probably top the list, but the aforementioned McDuffie and Joshua Williams are certainly there.Borgonzi also mentioned seventh-round pick and corner Jaylen Watson as someone making an impact."Watson is a bigger corner who can run," he said. "Even (rookie safety) Nazeeh (Johnson) is somebody who ran a (4.35-second 40-yard dash). They have these traits. When you're looking for those traits, what's the characteristics that's going to make them work? They all kind of have that. They all tried to get better every year in college."Pacheco - confirmed kick returner. McDuffie punt returner?Special teams coach Dave Toub mentioned about a week ago that Pacheco would be the starting kick returner for the Chiefs' first preseason game, and he reaffirmed that decision Tuesday, with that first game now just four days away."We're going to give him every chance to be that guy," Toub said of Pacheco. "I just think he has all of the attributes of being a good kick returner and he's gotten better and better at practice. He's doing little things better, he's catching the ball great."At punt return, Mecole Hardman has been taking reps at that spot. He's been the go-to guy there for the past three seasons. Toub likes Moore and McDuffie back there as well."McDuffie is the best punt catcher we have," Toub remarked.Justin Reid as backup kicker? Maybe one day.Justin Reid went viral when he knocked through a 65-yard field goal after practice on Sunday.Toward the end of a special teams session Tuesday, Toub decided to let Reid try again. This time, from about 52 yards. It was&nbsp;well&nbsp;short and shanked to the left."I wanted to surprise (Reid)," Toub said. "I saw him hanging out. He's always hanging out at the field goal drill. So, I wanted to surprise him and see how he would handle it. I don't think we found our backup kicker yet. But, he has a strong leg so we'll keep seeing what he can do."Injury updateThe one new injury to report Tuesday is that of defensive back Zayne Anderson, who left practice around 9:30 a.m. It was later disclosed that he has a shoulder injury. No word yet on how serious.Receiver Daurice Fountain (groin), tight end Jody Forston (quad), defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (knee) and receiver Gary Jennings (concussion) did not practice Tuesday. The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent defensive tackle Danny Shelton to a one-year deal, according to NFL reporter Adam Schefter.

Shelton had previously worked out for the Raiders earlier this week.

Shelton was a first-round selection by the Cleveland Browns back in the 2015 NFL Draft. He lasted three seasons with the Browns before he was traded to the New England Patriots and played for two years there. In 2020, he landed with the Detroit Lions before signing with the New York Giants on a one-year deal a year ago.

This is yet another signing in the defensive front for Kansas City. The Chiefs signed defensive ends Carlos Dunlap and Azur Kamara since late July and added Matt Dickerson on Monday after releasing Shilique Calhoun.

The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team was picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the Jayhawk West in 2022 after the league’s annual coaches poll was released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons were picked third in the five-team KJCCC Western Division by the league’s coaches. Cowley was picked to win the Jayhawk West with Barton picked second. After the Blue Dragons, Garden City fourth and Dodge City fifth.

Butler was picked to win the Jayhawk East this season with Coffeyville, Kansas City, Johnson County and Neosho County rounding out picked 2 through 5.

Head coach Sammy Lane, the only coach in program history, returns eight starters for his 18th season on the Hutchinson bench.

The Blue Dragons were 8-6-1 last season, although the Blue Dragons closed the season by winning 5 of their final 7 games. The Blue Dragons finished third in the Jayhawk West.

Forward Hadlie Lowe, the 2021 Blue Dragons’ leading scorer is back. Lowe had 18 goals and three assists (39 points). Lowe led the nation in game-winning goals with eight. She is the only returning front-line player returning.

Aimee Maher (4 goals, 4 assists), Julia De Souza (1 goal, 3 assists) and Emma Scholl all return as midfielders.

Two-year starters Zara Lawless and Ella Mae Miller, returning starter Lexi Jack and returning freshman Dayza Holliman all return on the back line in front of experiences goalkeepers Olivia Felix-Cardona and Madison Quarles.

Felix-Cardona was 6-6-1 last season with a 1.70 goals-against average and a .753 save percentage. Quarles posted a 2-0-0 record with a 0.80 goals-against average and a .714 save percentage.

Eight incoming freshmen will join the returning sophomores for the 2022 season.

The Blue Dragons will play host to Allen in a scrimmage at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. Hutchinson opens the season in Sterling, Colorado, on August 25 and 26 with games against Western Nebraska and Northeastern Junior College, respectively.

The Blue Dragons open at home on Sunday September 4 against Western Wyoming.
