MANHATTAN – Despite a furious second-round rally, the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team came up short on Monday at Jayhawk No. 1, the 2022 league opener at Colbert Hills Country Club.

For the first time since 2018, a Jayhawk Conference team other than the Blue Dragons won a league-designated tournament. Dodge City edged the Blue Dragons by three strokes on Monday. Dodge City shot a 36-hole total of 599 after rounds of 299 and 300. The Blue Dragons shot 307 in the morning round and improved 12 strikes to 295 in the afternoon round.

The second-place finish snapped a run of six-straight wins by the Blue Dragons in league-designated tournaments. Garden City was third at 614 and Barton was fourth at 617.

Defending KJCCC individual champion Ben Partridge won the individual title at 1-under 143. The Blue Dragons had two players in the Top 10 and four in the Top 12.

The morning round was the decisive round as Dodge City was more consistent in the cool and windy scoring conditions at Colbert Hills. The Conquistadors counted four players who scored in the 70s, led by George Fricker’s 72.

The Blue Dragons trailed Dodge City by eight strokes after the first round, but led by Partridge’s 2-under 70 and Harry Crocket’s even-par 72, the Dragons posted a 295 afternoon round, but fell three strokes short of Dodge City, which had a 300 in the afternoon round.

Partridge won his first career KJCCC Tournament by three strokes after rounds of 73 and 70 to finish at 1-under 143. Partridge won the tournament by three strokes over Barton’s Tom Gehring. Partridge trailed Dodge’s Fricker by one stroke after the first round. Fricker finished with a 78 in the afternoon round.

Freshman Blake Saffel tied for seventh at 7-over 151 on Monday. Saffel had rounds of 74 and 77.

Both Crockett and sophomore Addison Alonzo tied for 12th at 10-over 154.

Crockett shot an 82 in the opening round and rallied with an even-par 72 in the afternoon. Alonzo had rounds of 78 and 76.

Freshman Dominic Clemons tied for 24th at 162 (84-78).

Individual Player Finn Nelson placed 20th at 160 (79-81). Brock Southern was 48th at 197 (99-98).

The Blue Dragons will play at Jayhawk No. 2, a 54-hole event on April 11-12 at Crestview Country Club’s south course in Wichita.

Dragon golfers 2nd in KJCCC opener

STERLING – The Hutchinson Community College baseball team completed their conference bye week undefeated after a pair of run-rule victories over the Sterling College Junior Varsity Warriors on Monday in Sterling.

Daniel Beebe and Kael Babin drove in three runs each as the Blue Dragons defeated the Warriors 14-0 in five innings in the opener. The Dragons then combined for four home runs in a 15-2 five-inning win in the second game.

The Blue Dragons 14-12 match a season high for games over .500 at two. Hutchinson has won five in a row and 7 of its last 8 games. The Blue Dragons return to KJCCC play this week with a four-game series against Seward County – Thursday’s games at Hobart-Detter Field and Saturday at Liberal.

Hitting eighth and ninth in the order, respectively, Beebe and Babin did plenty of damage at the bottom of the order in Game 1.

Babin had his first career three-hit game, going 3 for 3 with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base. Babin had a bases-loaded double in a four-run third that gave the Dragons an 8-0 lead.

Beebe was 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs with two runs scored. He had a two-run double in the fourth that gave the Dragons a 10-0 lead. He added a sacrifice fly in the fifth for a 13-0 lead.

Ryan Henderson was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. Ben McLaughlin had two RBIs.

The Blue Dragons had 12 total hits and were 6 for 6 stealing bases. Jack Torosian and Sterling Sutcliffe and two steals apiece.

Five Hutchinson pitchers – Chase Torkelson, Luke Hornberger, Charlie Mosser, Landen Snyder and Konnor Kirchoffer – tossed a combined one-hit shutout. Hornberger (2-0) and Kirchoffer had three strikeouts each.

Jon Jenkins’ first-inning grand slam set the tone for the second game. Hutchinson lead 7-0 after its first at-bat.

P.J. Loucks, Henderson and Cade Baker also homered as Hutchinson posted a season single-game high with four homers.

Henderson hit a two-run homer in the second for a 9-0 lead. Baker and Loucks each hit two-run home runs in a four-run third inning.

The Blue Dragons had just seven hits in the second game. Hunter Gotreaux added an RBI double in the first inning. Loucks and Henderson had the Dragons’ only multi-hit games with two hits each.

The Dragons once again used five different pitchers – Justin Smith, Noah Kelley, Derick Johnson, Reed Scott and Carter Holstein – in one-inning stints. That group combined for 12 strikeouts and limited the Warriors to two runs on five hits. Kelley (1-0) was the winning pitcher.

Baseball Dragons roll in DH sweep at Sterling

Off to a 22-4 start and riding a 10-game winning streak, the Hutchinson Community College softball team is a nationally ranked team for the first time since 2018.

The Blue Dragons are ranked No. 19 in the latest NJCAA Division I Softball Rankings, which were released on Monday. One week ago, the Dragons were receiving votes. Since then the Blue Dragons swept Barton and Pratt last Friday and Saturday, respectively, to push their current win streak to 10 games.

This is the first time Hutchinson has been ranked since returning to the Division I level. Two years ago, the Blue Dragons were on the verge of a national ranking after starting the season 21-7 and sitting in first place in the Jayhawk East at the time the Covid-19 Pandemic put an abrupt end to the season.

The last time the Blue Dragons were ranked was at No. 15 in the final NJCAA Division II poll in 2018.

The Blue Dragons are 1-2 against teams ranked in the Top 20. The Blue Dragons open the only loss given to No. 6 Butler. Hutchinson and Butler split a doubleheader. The Dragons lost their only game played against No. 8 Grayson.

The Blue Dragons play host to Seward County at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday at Fun Valley. The Dragons travel to Colby for a doubleheader on Saturday.

One week ago, the Dragons were receiving votes. Since then the Blue Dragons swept Barton and Pratt last Friday and Saturday, respectively, to push their current win streak to 10 games.This is the first time Hutchinson has been ranked since returning to the Division I level. Two years ago, the Blue Dragons were on the verge of a national ranking after starting the season 21-7 and sitting in first place in the Jayhawk East at the time the Covid-19 Pandemic put an abrupt end to the season.The last time the Blue Dragons were ranked was at No. 15 in the final NJCAA Division II poll in 2018.The Blue Dragons are 1-2 against teams ranked in the Top 20. The Blue Dragons open the only loss given to No. 6 Butler. Hutchinson and Butler split a doubleheader. The Dragons lost their only game played against No. 8 Grayson.The Blue Dragons play host to Seward County at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday at Fun Valley. MULVANE — The Kansas Interscholastic Activities Administrators Association named Hutchinson High School Activities Director Kevin Armstrong Kansas Athletic Director of the Year at their awards banquet Saturday.

Armstrong, who has served Hutchinson for 17 years and is retiring after this term, was also named District 4 Athletic Director of the Year. Armstrong has been in his current role at HHS for 6 years.

As Hutch Post previously reported, Eagle Media Hutchinson Sports Director Glen Grunwald was named Sportscaster of the Year by the group, as well.

The Wildcats are playing for their third national championship since 2016.

Memphis reportedly under fire...Lanier leaves Georgia St. for SMU

UNDATED (AP) — The University of Memphis and men's basketball coach Penny Hardaway reportedly have been accused of serious violations of NCAA rules, including failing to cooperate with an investigation.

The Daily Memphian and The Commercial Appeal reported that they obtained copies of a notice of allegations from an investigation by the NCAA's Independent Accountability Resolution Process.

The newspapers also obtained a response from the university denying the allegations. The university said the notice "contains no specific facts, and it is the specific facts that are imperative for the resolution of this matter."

— Rob Lanier is the new head coach at SMU after taking Georgia State to the NCAA Tournament this season. Lanier was 53-30 in his three seasons at Georgia State. Tim Jankovich announced his retirement Tuesday after six seasons as the Mustangs' coach.

UNDATED (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have continued their winning streak after wrapping up homecourt advantage throughout the NBA playoffs last week.

The East-leading Celtics won for the 24th time in their last 28 games and dropped the Wolves to 1-3 on their four-game road trip. — The Hornets spoiled Kyrie Irving's first home game of the season by beating the Nets, 119-110. UNDATED (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins continued their playoff scramble in the NHL's Eastern Conference.

The Lightning made it two straight wins since a three-game skid by downing the Islanders, 4-1.

Scottie Scheffler won the Dell Technologies Match Play for his third title in his last five starts. His climb to No. 1 comes just weeks after his first tour victory.

Scheffler never trailed in the final against Kevin Kisner, building a 3-up lead through six holes and giving him no chance to catch up. Scheffler closed him out with a par on the 15th for a 4-and-3 victory.

Scheffler also never trailed in the semifinal win over Dustin Johnson on Sunday. In fact, he went the final 57 holes at Austin Country Club without trailing.

Chastain has first career win, breaks ice for Trackhouse Racing

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — It was a day of firsts for Ross Chastain and upstart race team Trackhouse Racing.

Chastain bumped and banged his way around the final overtime lap at Circuit of the Americas to earn his first career Cup win. It's also the first victory for Trackhouse Racing, which took over Chastain's contract after buying out Chip Ganassi Racing.

Tyler Reddick had somehow moved to the front in the previous single lap run between the eighth and ninth cautions. Chastain and Allmendinger restarted second and third, just ahead of Alex Bowman.

The overtime featured four lead changes, with Chastain and Allmendinger swapping it twice. Chastain decided the race by divebombing inside of Allmendinger, which spun Allmendinger from second to 33rd.

Bowman finished second, followed by Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott and Reddick.

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Yankees have signed right-hander Shelby Miller to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

The 31-year-old Miller is 38-57 with a 4.19 ERA in 163 games, including 132 starts over parts of nine seasons.

The 2015 NL All-Star split last season between the Cubs and Pirates, going 0-1 with a 9.24 ERA in 13 relief outings.

Sports Headlines for Monday

WINFIELD – Sophomore Antonio Cooper placed in four events and qualified for the 2022 NJCAA Outdoor National Championships in two of them to lead the Hutchinson Community College men’s track and field team to a team championship at Southwestern College’s Jinx Invitational on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons scored 172 team points, defeating runner-up Garden City by 68.5 points. The Broncbusters scored 103.5 points. Ottawa University was third with 85 points.

Cooper’s event win in the shot put led a group of four Blue Dragons to capture individual titles on Saturday. Cooper, who qualified for nationals in the shot put and discus was joined by Sharim Hamilton (400-meter hurdles) and Cleydterrious Thompson (200 meters) as qualifiers for the 2022 NJCAA national outdoor championships in May at Gowans Stadium.

Cooper won the shot put with a qualifying distance of 52 feet, 1.75 inches. Cooper’s throw was the sixth-best shot put in Blue Dragon history.

Cooper then qualified in the discus with a throw of 154-1, which is the ninth-best discus mark in Blue Dragon history. Cooper also placed fourth in the javelin after a throw of 149-9. He was fifth in the hammer throw after a throw of 124-9.

Thompson won the 200 meters on Saturday and qualified for nationals with a winning time of 21.35 seconds. Thompson posted the fifth-fastest outdoor 200 time in Blue Dragon history. Thompson was also second in the 100 meters in a time of 10.68 seconds, the ninth-fastest outdoor 100 time in Blue Dragon history.

Hamilton finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a national qualifying time of 10.58 seconds. That time ranked ninth on the Blue Dragon historical charts.

Two other Blue Dragons won events on Saturday. Demetre Browne won the men’s long jump at 22-3.5. Alexander Holt won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.31 seconds.

Other top Blue Dragon performances at the Jinx Invite were:

+ Aaron Geissinger placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:19.81. That time is the seventh in Blue Dragon history.

+ Andrew Holt was second in the 1,500 meters after a time of 4:09.54, which is the fifth-fastest time in program history. Holt was second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:34.86. That time ranked as the 10th-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

+ Jade Jantzen was second in the pole vault after he cleared 13-7.75.

+ Caleb Manning was second in the triple jump at 45-5.25.

+ Andrei Fuentes was third in the triple jump at 44-11.5.

+ Alexander Holt placed fourth in the high jump after clearing 5-11.5.

+ Thompson placed fourth in the long jump at 21-0.75.

+ Brayden Peterson was fourth in the pole vault at 12-2. Peterson also finished seventh in the javelin at 139-0.

+ Jobe Fowles placed fourth in the discus at 135-1.

+ Caleb Manning was fifth in the high jump after clearing 5-11.5.

+ Carsyn Turpin was eighth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:19.15. Turpin was third in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:38.36.

+ The Blue Dragon 4x400-Meter relay team of Davion Gardenhire, Tracey Mason, Fuentes and Hamilton was second in a time of 3:24.32. The relay team of Browne, Dre’Shun Bridges, Donovan Hines and Thompson was third with a time of 3:25.11.

The Blue Dragons just missed a team championship by 0.5 point, being edged out by York College 81-80.5. Jayhawk Conference rival Barton was third with 76.5 points. The Blue Dragons tallied one individual event championship and five individual event runner-up finishes.

Sophomore Louise Cocking continued her exceptional 2022 season by breaking an 18-year-old record in the 1,500 meters. Cocking, who broke three school records in the 2022 indoor season, placed second in the 1,500 on Saturday with a NJCAA national championship-qualifying time of 4:51.28. That broke the 2004 mark of Amy Matthews (4:52.95).

Two-time All-American Kianna Brown pushed her ticket to nationals by winning the pole vault on Saturday. Brown’s 10-feet, 8-inch performance was a career best and the fifth-highest pole vault in Blue Dragon women’s track and field history. Brown was the only Jinx Invite event winner on Saturday.

Sophomore Noel Buckhaultz was the third Blue Dragon to qualify for the 2022 National Championships in May at Gowans Stadium. Buckhaultz finished second in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 12;11.58. That time is a PR for Buckhaultz and the second-fastest time in Blue Dragon history.

Dragons qualify 3, set one record in runner-up finish at Jinx Invite

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) — Villanova guard and second-leading scorer Justin Moore will undergo surgery this week for a torn Achilles tendon. Moore's diagnosis is a brutal blow for the Wildcats ahead of their Final Four game with Kansas. 

Moore was a second-team All-Big East selection this season. He was injured in the final minute of Villanova’s regional final victory win over Houston on Saturday night and was on crutches during the Wildcats’ postgame celebration. 

The Wildcats are playing for their third national championship since 2016.

Next up is the national semifinals and a matchup with Villanova on Saturday in New Orleans.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have signed Ronald Jones to a one-year contract, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Saturday, adding some depth behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the running back room. 

The person spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical. Jones was a second-round pick of the Buccaneers in the 2018 draft who started 25 of the 55 games he appeared in over his first four seasons in the league. Jones’ best came in 2020, when he carried 192 times for 978 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season, then helped Tampa Bay defeat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.

Jones was a second-round pick of the Buccaneers in the 2018 draft who started 25 of the 55 games he appeared in over his first four seasons in the league. Jones’ best came in 2020, when he carried 192 times for 978 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season, then helped Tampa Bay defeat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
