Playoff bound: Bama rolls No. 1 Georgia for SEC title; No. 3 Cincinnati claims AAC crown 

UNDATED (AP) — Bryce Young stunningly carved up the nation's best defense, giving Nick Saban and Alabama a shot at another national championship. 

Young threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide (No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings) rolled over No. 1 Georgia 41-24 in the Southeastern Conference championship game. 

The result likely sends both powerhouse programs to the four-team College Football Playoff, which will be announced Sunday. Georgia cruised through the regular season with a 12-0 record, barely challenged and a unanimous choice as the nation's No. 1 team for the past two months. But the Bulldogs were blown away by Young's wizardry. 

— No. 2 Michigan captured its first Big Ten title in 17 years and a probable playoff berth with a 42-3 rout over No. 15 Iowa. — Utah State won its first Mountain West Conference title with a 46-13 rout of No. 19 San Diego State. Brandon Bowling caught two touchdown passes from Logan Bonner during the decisive third quarter as the Aggies improved to 10-3.

— No. 20 Louisiana-Lafayette capped off soon-to-be Florida coach Billy Napier's time with the Ragin' Cajuns by defeating Appalachian State 24-16 in the Sun Belt Conference championship game. Levi Lewis scored on a career-high 56-yard run and passed for another touchdown.

Big 12's Bowlsby: CFP expansion for 2024 'in some jeopardy'

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby says expanding the College Football Playoff as soon as the 2024 season is "in some jeopardy" if an agreement on a new format cannot be reached soon. 

Speaking to reporters before the Big 12 championship game, Bowlsby said expansion talks have slowed to the point where hope of implementing a new format before the current agreement ends after the 2025 season is waning. 

— Akron hired Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead as head coach, bringing back a former assistant for the Zips to take over a struggling program. Moorhead has been directing the Ducks' offense the last two seasons. 

No. 16 Alabama takes down No. 3 Gonzaga 91-82

UNDATED (AP) — No. 16 Alabama held off Gonzaga's big second-half rally for a 91-82 win over the third-ranked Bulldogs. 

The Crimson Tide made 10 of their 13 3-pointers in the first half, led by Jaden Shackelford's sharp shooting from deep. Alabama led by 16 at halftime and withstood every charge the Bulldogs made in the second half to hand Gonzaga its second loss in three games.

— LJ Cryer led five players in double figures with his 20 points, and fourth-ranked Baylor beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 99-54 on Saturday night. The Bears (8-0) led by 10 after a Kendall Brown layup with 14:14 left in the first half. The Golden Lions never got the margin back to single digits.

— The Memphis Grizzlies beat the Dallas Mavericks 97-90. Desmond Bane scored a career-high 29 points, and Tyus Jones had 16 points and seven assists for the Grizzlies. They haven't trailed at all while going 4-0 since star guard and leading scorer Ja Morant was sidelined with a left knee sprain.

— Terrence Davis scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half and the Sacramento Kings beat the Los Angeles Clippers for the second time in four nights with a 104-99 victory.

Ovechkin nets 750th goal, Capitals top Columbus

UNDATED (AP) — Alex Ovechkin scored his 20th goal of the season and the 750th of his NHL career to help the Washington Capitals beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1. 

Ovechkin became the second-fastest player to reach the 750-goal mark and the fourth to score 20 or more in each of his first 17 seasons. 

Ovechkin is now 16 goals behind Jaromir Jagr for third place on the career list. 

— Sam Reinhart and Anton Lundell scored in the shootout, and the Florida Panthers continued their string of comebacks by rallying from three one-goal deficits to beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3. Football Hall of Famer Claude Humphrey dies as age 77

ATLANTA (AP) — Pro Football Hall of Famer Claude Humphrey has died at the age of 77. 

Humphrey was one of the NFL's most fearsome pass rushers during the 1970s with the Atlanta Falcons, earning six Pro Bowl appearances. He also played for the Philadelphia Eagles, helping the 1980 team reach the Super Bowl. 

Morikawa pulls away in Bahamas, takes big step toward No. 1

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Collin Morikawa is one round away from reaching No. 1 in the world. 

The British Open champion was relentless in the Hero World Challenge and posted the only bogey-free round of the week. His 64 staked him to a five-shot lead in the holiday exhibition in the Bahamas.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 12th Salt City Bowl started with No. 5 Hutchinson and No. 8 Hinds matching each other play for play.

The Dragons looked to put another game away early when Cortez Braham scored on the third play from scrimmage. Dylan Laible connected with Braham for the 33-yard score.&nbsp;

Hinds quickly matched the TD with a three-play drive of its own that only spanned 21 yards after an Anwar Lewis fumble. Jaiden Burns caught the 21-yard pass from Ruben Lee after Hinds failed to move the ball the first two plays.

Tye Edwards went into action after Lewis went down with an injury. Edwards broke off an 85-yard run that ended at the one yard line. He reached paydirt on the next play to put Hutchinson up 14-7.

Hinds' running back Jeffrey Pittman matched that score with a 48-yard angry run of his own.&nbsp;

After quick scores from both teams on the game's first 28 points (drives of 3, 3, 3 and 2 plays, respectively), Hutchinson orchestrated a nine-play, 68-yard drive that ended with a Jaheim Simmons three-yard run.

Hinds answered with an eight-play, 67-yard drive that was capped on a Pittman 29-yard run.

Before the first quarter ended, Laible hit Malik Benson for a 63-yard TD.

Hinds quickly returned the favor on an 85-yard TD pass from Lee to Tabashi Thomas.

With the scored tied at 28, Hutchinson went on a 31-point run.

It started with a 39-yard field goal from C.J. Moya, his longest of the season.

The Dragons seemed poised to take a three-point lead into halftime, but Drew Dallas took a timeout with two seconds left and his team 56 yards from the end zone.

Dylan Kedzior provided a spark in the backfield with a 56-yard run.

Edwards found the end zone again, this time from six yards out.&nbsp;

Laible scored his first career rushing touchdown on a one-yard sneak in the fourth quarter.

With 4:22 remaining, Hinds got on the board again when Lee hit Kaleb Mosley from eight yards away.

Daisean Cash came in at quarterback in relief of Laible and hit Marcello Bussey on a free play from 35 yards away. Hinds jumped offside and Bussey was pushed out of bounds before coming back in to catch the score. The offside penalty was declined and the score stood.

Benson set the single-season record for receiving yards with 1,229. He had seven catches for 198 yards and two scores Saturday. He was named the Salt City Bowl Offensive MVP.

Nadame Tucker was named the Salt City Bowl Defensive MVP with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss.

Laible threw for 310 yards and three TDs.

Pittman led Hinds with 195 rushing yards and two touchdowns.&nbsp;

NEW YORK (AP) — Christian Braun had a career-high 31 points, Ochai Agbaji scored 23 and No. 8 Kansas emphatically turned back a second-half charge to beat St. John's 95-75 in the first basketball game at new UBS Arena. Senior forward David McCormack was a force inside with 15 points and 13 rebounds for the Jayhawks. Kansas has bounced back from a one-point loss to Dayton last week with consecutive double-digit wins. Remy Martin added 12 points and five assists, and Kansas clamped down on defense late. Julian Champagnie scored all but four of his 24 points after halftime for the Red Storm. The arena is the new home of the NHL's New York Islanders.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Jaden Ivey scored 19 points, Trevion Williams had 13 points and 18 rebounds, and No. 2 Purdue held off a late Iowa rally to win 77-70 in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Mason Gillis added 12 points off the bench for the Boilermakers (8-0). KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs will be without starting cornerback Rashad Fenton and right tackle Lucas Niang for Sunday night's game against the Broncos, raising the possibility former All-Pro lineman Kyle Long could play for the first time in two years. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday that Fenton, the NFL's top-rated cornerback according to some grading services, would miss the game with the knee he strained two weeks ago against Dallas. Niang has been dealing with a rib injury. Long spent last season in retirement then returned this spring, only to fracture a bone in his knee during a workout in June.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — No. 2 Michigan faces No. 15 Iowa in the Big Ten championiship game in Indianapolis this weekend. Neither team has won a conference title since they shared it back in 2004. The Wolverines could use a win to seal a spot in the College Football Playoff. That would give them a chance to return to Indianapolis for January's national championship game. Michigan is 11-1 and Iowa is 10-2 going into the game.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Rookie running back Javonte Williams is preparing to get his first NFL start Sunday night at Kansas City with veteran Melvin Gordon III listed as doubtful. Gordon missed practice all week with a sore hip and a sore shoulder. Williams is second in the league with 42 missed tackles he's forced and he's rushed for nearly 600 yards with a pair of touchdowns, including one in last week's win over the Chargers. The Broncos can move into first place in the AFC West with an upset of the Chiefs.

Coach Chris Klieman says the two assistant coaches, whose contracts were due to expire in February, would not be retained for the bowl season. Former Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein, who had been working with Kansas State quarterbacks, will serve as the interim offensive coordinator for the bowl game. Stephen Curry bounced back from one of the worst shooting nights of his career by scoring 23 points as the Golden State Warriors ripped the Suns, 118-96. Blazers executive Neil Olshey dismissed after probe

UNDATED (AP) — The Portland Trail Blazers have fired Neil Olshey.

The team's president of basketball operations and general manager was let go after an investigation into workplace conduct. 

The Blazers hired an outside firm last month to investigate workplace environment concerns stemming from allegations of misconduct involving Olshey.

The Blazers promoted director of player personnel Joe Cronin to interim general manager. 

— Wesley Matthews is back with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks signed the swingman Friday, bringing him back after he spent the 2019-20 season with them. Matthews has averaged 12.6 points in 849 games over 12 seasons.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — No. 14 Utah is going to the Rose Bowl for the first time in school history after dominating the Pac-12 championship game.

Devin Lloyd had a pick-6 and Cam Rising threw for another score in the Utes' 38-10 rout of 10th-ranked Oregon. It was a carbon copy of their meeting two weeks ago, when Utah opened strong in a 38-7 thrashing of the Ducks.

Rising threw for 170 yards and ran for another 61 as the Utes improved to 10-3. Tavion Thomas had two of Utah's three rushing touchdowns.

Ducks quarterback Anthony Brown was just 13 of 24 for 147 yards for the Ducks.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame has quickly hired a new football coach without embarking on a detailed search.

Defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman has been promoted to head coach of the Fighting Irish, less than a week after Brian Kelly left to take over LSU's program.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday that Notre Dame would conduct a thorough search for the storied program's 30th coach. The search didn't last long as word began to leak Wednesday afternoon that Freeman was Notre Dame's choice.

The 35-year-old Freeman helped the Irish go 11-1 in what was expected to be a transition season after making the playoff. 

UNDATED (AP) — Second-ranked Purdue was able to win its Big Ten opener despite blowing most of a 19-point lead.

Jaden Ivey scored 19 points and Trevion Williams had a double-double as the Boilermakers topped Iowa, 77-70. Williams provided 13 points and 18 rebounds in helping Purdue stay in line for a No. 1 ranking on Monday, thanks to Duke's loss to Ohio State earlier this week.

But the Boilermakers watched a 63-44 shrink to 70-68 following an 11-0 run by the Hawkeyes. Purdue closed on a 7-2 spurt to secure the win.

Patrick McCaffrey had a team-high 15 points for Iowa, which played without leading scorer and rebounder Keegan Murray because of an ankle injury.

SEATTLE (AP) — Fifth-ranked UCLA's game at Washington scheduled for Sunday has been canceled because of COVID-19 issues in the Huskies' program.

The game won't be rescheduled and will count as a Pac-12 victory for the Bruins. A conference rule for games impacted by COVID-19 says that if two schools can't agree on a date to reschedule, then the team dealing with the coronavirus outbreak will forfeit the game. 

Turgeon out as Maryland men's hoops coach

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Mark Turgeon is out as Maryland's basketball coach after a slow start to his 11th season knocked the team out of the Top 25. The athletic department announced Friday that Turgeon was stepping down in what it called a mutual decision.

The Terrapins won at least 23 games in five of the past seven seasons, but Maryland has reached the Sweet 16 just once under Turgeon and hasn't gone further. The Terps began this season ranked, but a loss at home to Virginia Tech on Wednesday night dropped them to 5-3 on the season.

Assistant Danny Manning was named interim coach for the rest of the season.

UNDATED (AP) — New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones will not play against Miami on Sunday because of a neck injury. 

Coach Joe Judge ruled out Jones on Friday after being told by the team's medical personnel that the third-year quarterback had not been cleared for contact. Jones had practiced on a limited basis on Wednesday and Thursday.

Veteran Mike Glennon will start for the Giants. 

— The Chiefs will be without starting cornerback Rashad Fenton and right tackle Lucas Niang for Sunday night's game against the Broncos. Fenton has a knee injury and Niang is dealing with a rib injury, raising the possibility that former All-Pro lineman Kyle Long could play for the first time in two years.

— The Seahawks could elevate Adrian Peterson from the practice squad to play against San Francisco on Sunday. Peterson was signed this week by the Seahawks due to concerns about depth at running back. 

— Bears coach Matt Nagy says Justin Fields' broken ribs haven't improved to the extent that he can play against the Cardinals on Sunday. That means Andy Dalton will make his fourth start of the season.

Blueshirts blank Sharks, finish without Shesterkin

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Rangers' latest victory may be a costly one.

Ryan Strome's first-period goal stood up as the Rangers picked up their fifth straight win, 1-0 over the Sharks.

The Blueshirts have won seven straight at home and are 9-2-0 in their last 11 overall. 

But New York finished the game without Igor Shesterkin, who appeared to suffer a right leg injury stretching out face-down in the crease just over five minutes into the third period. Alexander Georgiev stopped nine shots after Shesterkin recorded 19.

Blackhawks F Tyler Johnson sidelined by neck surgery

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Blackhawks forward Tyler Johnson is the second NHL player to have an unusual neck surgery. 

A person with knowledge of the situation says Johnson's operation was the same artificial disk replacement surgery that Jack Eichel underwent last month. Team physician Michael Terry says the 31-year-old Johnson will be sidelined for approximately three months.
