The Wind Surge extended their extra inning record to 3-1 after defeating the Arkansas Travelers 3-1 in ten innings and winning their third consecutive game Friday.

The Wind Surge scored two tenth inning runs without the benefit of a hit. The Surge took advantage of a fielder’s choice, a pair of walks and two sacrifice flies to plate two runs.

Matt Canterino started for Wichita and pitched three shutout innings and has not allowed a run or a hit in his last nine innings worked. The Surge went through five relief pitchers with Evan Sisk earning the win and Alex Scherff closing out the night with his second save.

Arkansas grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a Joe Rizzo RBI single.

In the seventh inning the Surge tied the game when Cole Sturgeon was hit by a pitch and scored on a ground out.

The Wind Surge offense struggled on Friday managing two hits in the game. The Surge took advantage of five walks and a pair of hitters hit by a pitch. Arkansas had six hits in the game.

The Wind Surge will take the field again Saturday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas legislators have given final approval to a bill that authorizes betting on sporting events. Most of the state’s revenues from the new legal gambling would go to efforts to lure the Missouri-based Kansas City Chiefs to the Kansas side of the metropolitan area. 

The Republican-controlled Senate voted 21-13 early Friday to approve the gambling bill. The Republican-controlled House passed the measure, 73-49, so it goes next to Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly. She is expected to sign it. 

The bill says that 80% of the state's revenues would go into a fund to provide incentives for professional sports teams to come to Kansas. Supporters were thinking specifically of the Chiefs.

The Saints drafted Olave at No. 11 after trading their third- and fourth-round picks to the Washington Commanders and moving up five spots. New Orleans then landed Penning with the 19th overall pick. The Saints entered the draft with two picks on Friday, one in the second round and another in the third.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals star Nolan Arenado and pitcher Génesis Cabrera have been suspended for their actions during a benches-clearing fracas Wednesday against the New York Mets. Arenado has been banned two games and Cabrera one game, and both have been fined undisclosed amounts. Their punishments were announced Thursday by Michael Hill, Major League Baseball's senior vice president for on-field operations. Arenado is appealing his decision and was set to play third base and bat fourth for St. Louis against Arizona on Thursday night. Cabrera will serve his ban Thursday after pitching two innings during the 10-5 win over the Mets on Wednesday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Dakota Hudson pitched six shutout innings, Paul Goldschmidt drove in three runs and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3. St. Louis star Nolan Arenado had two hits after deciding to appeal a two-game suspension from Major League Baseball for his role in a brawl with the Mets on Wednesday. Tommy Edman and Tyler O'Neill drove in two runs each for the Cardinals, who won their second game in a row after a three-game losing streak. UNDATED (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will visit Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 15 in the first game on Amazon Prime Video's "Thursday Night Football" package. The matchup was announced on Thursday during the first round of the NFL draft. Amazon will pay $1 billion a season to carry the games for 11 years. Prime Video will carry 15 regular-season and one preseason game. The league announced last week that the complete schedule will be released on May 12. However, international games will be revealed on May 4 with other notable matchups being announced the week of May 9.

CHICAGO (AP) — Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi's season is in jeopardy after tests Thursday revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. The 26-year-old Mondesi, who played in only 35 games in 2021 because of left hamstring and left oblique injuries, had started 14 of 15 games this season. Mondesi, who was batting .140 with five stolen bases in five attempts, suffered the injury on an attempted pickoff play Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox. Nicky Lopez, who started 141 games at shortstop in 2021, likely will move from second base to shortstop.

LINDSBORG, Kan. (AP) — Police in the central Kansas town of Lindsborg announced two boys are suspected of being involved in the contamination of a water cooler used by the Kansas Wesleyan baseball team during a doubleheader at Bethany College last weekend. Both schools contacted police to file a report about a foreign substance found in Kansas Wesleyan's water. Police did not say how it connected the juveniles to the tainted water and said no one associated with either college was responsible for tampering with the water cooler. The substance mixed into the water was paint used to put lines on the field.

Suns, Mavs, 76ers advance to second round with Game 6 victories

UNDATED (AP) — Chris Paul went 14 for 14 in the best shooting night in NBA playoff history, Devin Booker returned from a hamstring injury to hit a late 3-pointer and the Phoenix Suns beat the New Orleans Pelicans 115-109 to finish off the first-round series in six games.

Paul had the most field goals without a miss in a playoff game, hit all four of his free throws and had eight assists as the top-seeded Suns overcame a 10-point halftime deficit.

Phoenix will face the Dallas Mavericks in the second round.

Luka Doncic (DAHN'-chihch) and Jalen Brunson each scored 24 points as the Mavericks advanced by beating the Utah Jazz 98-96 in Game 6 of their series.

After Brunson hit a 3-pointer from the corner, Mike Conley was called for traveling with five seconds remaining, and Brunson made one of two free throws with 4.3 seconds to play. The Jazz got an open look for Bojan (BOY'-ahn) Bogdanovic on the wing, but he came up short.

In the Eastern Conference, Joel Embiid had 33 points and 10 rebounds, James Harden added 22 points and 15 assists to lead the 76ers to a 132-98 victory over the Toronto Raptors, ending their first-round series.

Philadelphia will face Miami in the second round.

Defense 1st, then offense, with receivers a focal point

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Defense was the focus to start the NFL draft Thursday night, with the first five selections coming on that side of the ball, including edge rushers with Travon Walker of national champion Georgia to Jacksonville and Aidan Hutchinson of Michigan to Detroit at Nos. 1 and 2.

It's the first time in 31 years that no player on offense went in the opening five picks. So, naturally, the next five choices were on offense.

And those kept coming, with a focus on wide receivers. In all, six of the opening 18 selections were wideouts, starting with Southern California's Drake London at No. 8 to Atlanta.

No quarterbacks went until 20th, when Pitt's Kenny Pickett found out he can simply switch to another side of the practice facility as he joins the Steelers to perhaps become Ben Roethlisberger's successor.

Here's a little more on the first dozen picks:

— The Jacksonville Jaguars took Georgia pass rusher Travon Walker with the top pick in the NFL draft. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound Walker had 9½ sacks in three years with the Bulldogs, including six during last season's national championship run.

— The Detroit Lions selected Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson with the No. 2 pick, addressing a desperate need with a hometown star. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound edge rusher was a sack-master for the Wolverines whose consistency and relentlessness helped lead them to their first College Football Playoff.

— Derek Stingley Jr., yet another outstanding defensive back from LSU, goes third overall to the Houston Texans. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Stingley excels in man coverage.

— The Jets take Cincinnati cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner fourth overall. Gardner was a major reason the Bearcats broke through into the College Football Playoff last season.

— Another edge rusher went at No. 5. Kayvon Thibodeaux of Oregon will be bolstering the pass rush for the New York Giants.

— North Carolina State's Ikem Ekwonu, considered the premier blocker in this draft, has been selected sixth in the first round by quarterback-hungry Carolina. He is the first offensive player chosen.

— Evan Neal, a mammoth 6-foot-7, 335-pounder who has played both tackle positions at Alabama, is the second opening-round pick by the Giants.

— Atlanta used the No. 8 pick to select 6-foot-5 receiver Drake London of Southern California.

— Seattle sought to address issues on its offensive line by taking Mississippi tackle Charles Cross at ninth overall.

— Picks 10, 11 and 12 were all pass catchers, starting with Garrett Wilson to the New York Jets at No. 10. Wilson's Ohio State teammate Chris Olave went next to the Saints after New Orleans swapped picks with Washington, which got New Orleans' pick at No. 16. And the Lions moved up to 12, swapping picks with Minnesota to take Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two more prominent wide receivers switched teams with Tennessee's A.J. Brown and Baltimore's Marquise Brown getting swapped during a dizzying stretch of the NFL draft.

The Ravens traded Marquise Brown and the 100th overall pick to Arizona for the 23rd pick in the draft.

Then the Titans dealt A.J. Brown to Philadelphia for the 18th and 101st picks.

In all, 17 of the 23 picks between Nos. 7 and 29 in the draft were made by teams that acquired them in trades. Eleven of those picks changed hands in the nine trades made during draft.

Pitchers' duel in Texas goes to Astros way

UNDATED (AP) — An impressive pitchers' duel in Texas saw the Astros emerge 3-2 victors over the Rangers.

Houston's Kyle Tucker hit a tiebreaking pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning off Matt Bush to decide it. Bush was the first reliever for Texas after left-hander Martin Perez took a perfect game into the seventh inning before giving up his only run.

Two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander got the win, striking out eight while allowing just one run over seven innings.

— Ronald Acuña Jr. went 1 for 5 with two stolen bases in his return to the Braves lineup, but it was Kyle Wright who claimed a starring role, pitching three-hit ball over a career-high seven innings to give Atlanta a 5-1 win over the Cubs. The struggling Braves took two of three from Chicago for their first series win of the season.

Ramirez scored easily.

— Aaron Judge hit a long three-run homer moments after Baltimore committed its fifth error of the game, as surging Yankees beat the Orioles 10-5. Judge's fifth homer of the season came two batters after Baltimore shortstop Jorge Mateo committed his second error on DJ LeMahieu's grounder. It was the Yanks' sixth straight win.

— Zack Wheeler tossed one-hit ball over six shutout innings and Alec Bohm homered to help the Philadelphia Phillies complete a four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 7-1 victory. Wheeler won his first game of the season. He struck out seven and walked four.

— Ha-Seong Kim hit a tiebreaking, three-run double in the sixth inning and the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 to complete a season sweep in the series. Manny Machado had four hits, giving him seven in the last two games as San Diego improved to 6-0 against the Reds this season.

— Alek Manoah struck out seven and pitched three-hit ball over seven innings, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 1-0. The 24-year-old Manoah walked only one batter as the Blue Jays took three of four from their AL East rival. Manoah, in his second season, won his eighth in a row dating to last year.

— Andrew McCutchen's go-ahead two-run single in the top of the ninth inning rallied the Milwaukee Brewers past the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 to complete a three-game sweep. McCutchen, a five-time All-Star in Pittsburgh, began the game with a leadoff home run. In the ninth, he delivered a single to right field off Pirates closer Chris Stratton.

— The Carolina Hurricanes closed out a record-setting regular season with a 6-3 win over the New Jersey Devils. The Hurricanes added to their franchise records for wins (54) and points (116) in a season. Jesperi Kotkaniemi had a goal and two assists in the victory. Carolina takes a six-game winning streak into the postseason.

— Brock Nelson and Anders Lee scored first-period goals, Mathew Barzal had three assists and Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves as the New York Islanders routed the playoff-bound Washington Capitals 5-1. The Islanders swept a home-and-home series with the playoff-bound Capitals this week.

— Patrice Bergeron recorded his eighth career hat trick and his 400th NHL goal to lead the Bruins past Buffalo, 5-0. David Pastrnak ended Boston's 0-for-39 power-play slump with his 40th goal of the season.

— Oliver Bjorkstrand (BYOHRK'-strand) led Columbus with a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win over Tampa Bay, keeping the Lightning from clinching the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Division. Tampa Bay has a one-point lead over Boston with one game remaining for each team.

— The Edmonton Oilers rallied to beat the San Jose Sharks 5-4 in overtime. Zach Hyman scored his career-high 27th goal of the season 1:37 into the extra period. Edmonton has won six of its last seven games.

— Brock Boeser scored his second goal of the game with 29.7 seconds left in overtime, giving the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings dominated much of the game, taking a 2-0 lead into the third period, but the Canucks rallied with goals by Boeser and Alex Chiasson.

Bolton fifth Gonzaga starter to declare for NBA draft

UNDATED (AP) — Guard Rasir Bolton has become the fifth Gonzaga starter to declare for the NBA draft. He announced his decision on social media.

Bolton played one season at Penn State and two more at Iowa State before transferring to Gonzaga. He was eligible for a second season at Gonzaga due to a COVID-19 waiver granted to all players who competed in 2020-21.

Four other Gonzaga starters have submitted their names to the draft, including projected first-round pick Chet Holmgren, forward Drew Timme (TIH'-mee), wing Julian Strawther and point guard Andrew Nembhard.

Former Hutchinson Community College defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt became the 11th Blue Dragon to be selected in the NFL Draft on Thursday Night in Las Vegas.

Taken with the 28th overall pick in the first round by the Green Bay Packers, Wyatt becomes the highest drafted Blue Dragon player in program history and the second Blue Dragon ever selected in the first round.

Wyatt, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive tackle from Decatur, Georgia, surpassed Cordarrelle Patterson as the highest-ranked Blue Dragon in NFL Draft history. Patterson was taken with the 29th overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Wyatt becomes the first Blue Dragon drafted since Gerald Everett (Rams), Alvin Kamara (Saints) and Jeremiah Ledbetter (Lions) were all selected in the 2017 Draft.

Combining drafted players and undrafted free-agent signees, Wyatt is the 35th Blue Dragon to be selected by an NFL team.

The Surge were able to score runs in the next four innings to build the lead to 7-0 featuring a solo home run from Edouard Julien and a two run home run from Cole Sturgeon.

Surge starter Louie Varland was lights out on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings and only allowing three hits on four strikeouts before being relieved by Kody Funderbunk in the sixth inning.

LIBERAL – Easton Swanson’s go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh inning of Game 2 against Seward County pushed the No. 15-ranked Hutchinson Community College softball team to a KJCCC doubleheader sweep and a 10-game winning streak on Wednesday.

Emily Munson and Riley Wertz combined for a three-hit shutout in the Blue Dragons’ 4-0 win over the Seward County Saints in Game 1 at French Family Field. Swanson’s go-ahead single in the top of the seventh broke Game 2’s second tie and was the difference in a 7-6 Blue Dragon victory.

The Blue Dragons improved to 36-6 overall and 27-3 in the Jayhawk Conference. Hutchinson swept the season series with Seward County (23-23, 14-16).

The 36 wins tied the 2006 Blue Dragons for the seventh-most wins in a season in program history. The Dragons have won 10 games in a row – the second win streak of 10 or more games this season – and have won 23 of their last 25 games.

Hutchinson will close out the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday at Pratt.

The Blue Dragons had leads of 4-0 and 6-4, only to have Seward County battle back and tie the game on both occasions.

Wertz led off the seventh inning with a single and was pinch-ran for by Lexi Pitcher. With two out and Pitcher still at second, Swanson hit a sharp groundball through the left side of the infield to score Pitcher for a 7-6 Blue Dragon lead.

Wertz, who entered the game in the bottom of the fourth, retired the Saints in order in the seventh inning to earn the pitching victory and improve her season record to 12-1.

Hutchinson took a 4-0 lead when Wertz hit a grand slam to left field in the third inning. Seward County tied the game at four with four runs in the fourth inning, which snapped the Blue Dragon pitching staff’s consecutive scoreless streak at 19 innings.

The Blue Dragons scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Goetz broke the 4-all tie with a two-out RBI single in the fifth for a 5-4 lead. The Dragons took a two-run lead in the sixth when Natalie Bevan grounded out to third to score Haley Miller.

Swanson had her third career three-hit game, going 3 for 4 in Game 2 with three singles and her go-ahead hit in the top of the seventh. Swanson’s three hits are a season high for the sophomore outfielder.

Wertz was 3 for 3 with the team’s second grand slam this season – Goetz had the other grand slam, which came against the Ottawa JV on January 29. Wertz struck out five in 3 2-3 innings to up her season total to 140. Wertz moved past Elise Beguelin for ninth on the Blue Dragon single-season strikeout list. Wertz allowed three earned runs on two hits and three walks.

Munson and Wertz combined for the Blue Dragons’ ninth shutout of the season in the opener.

Munson improved to 8-0 for the season with 5 1-3 shutout innings. She allowed three hits and one walk while striking out four.

Wertz extended her Blue Dragon single-season and career records for saves with her eighth of the season. She retired all five batters she faced with three strikeouts.

Ella Dougherty had the only multi-hit game, going 2 for 4 with a pair of single and a run scored. Wertz broke a 12-game streak without a home run, going 1 for 3 with a homer to left field.

He takes the spot of Daniyal Robinson, who was hired as head coach at Cleveland State. Schmidt had been a graduate assistant and player development coordinator at Iowa State from 2014-17. He returned to the Cyclones with Otzelberger last year. Schmidt worked on Otzelberger's staff at UNLV. Otzelberger also announced that former Northern Iowa assistant coach Erik Crawford has been named the director of player development and graduate assistant Mo Ba has been promoted to assistant director of player development.

The third-seeded Bucks advance to face second-seeded Boston in conference semifinals, with Game 1 on Sunday in Boston.

After splitting the first two games, the Bucks won the last three by an average margin of 23.3 points. They won those three games without Khris Middleton. The All-Star sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during the fourth quarter of Game 2.
