The Wind Surge defeated the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 4-3 on Wednesday evening in game two of their six-game road trip.

The Wind Surge snagged an early lead in the top of the second with an RBI double by Michael Helman. Wichita added a pair of runs in the sixth with a two-run homer by Leobaldo Cabrera, his first of the season. Austin Martin drove in the fourth run of the night with a RBI triple in the ninth.

Matt Canterino pitched four scoreless innings. He retired 10 consecutive batters while striking out six in the game.

The Naturals went six innings without a run before Logan Homer smacked his third homer of the season. In the bottom of the ninth the Naturals rallied scoring 2 runs, but the comeback fell short. Austin Schulfer earned his fifth save of the season and Kody Funderburk earned the win in relief for Wichita.

Notes: Michael Helman extended his hitting streak to eight, he exited the game in the fifth inning…Dennis Ortega reached base in his 19th consecutive game, second highest in the Texas League…Matt Canterino has not allowed a run in his last five games, 17 consecutive scoreless innings.

KBCA Awards announced

Fourteen Kansas high school senior football players have been selected by the Coach Bill Snyder Family/Sunflower Chapter of the National Football Foundation as 2021-22 scholar-athletes, including one from Inman and another from Kingman.

“This is an accomplished group of young men. We could not be more pleased to recognize their achievements on the field, but also in the classroom and in serving their respective communities,” Chapter President Gerry McGuire said. “Football is the ultimate team sport and these individuals displayed great leadership for their programs. We congratulate them, their coaches, parents and fans who supported them during their careers.”

These awards recognize excellence in academics, football and community leadership as selected by the chapter board of directors. The honorees had to be nominated by their head coach. The list includes:

● Kylan Cunningham—Lakeside Jr –Sr High School

● Trey Harmison—Riley County High School

● Mikey Pauley—Blue Valley Northwest High School

These student-athletes will be honored at the annual chapter awards dinner, this year conducted May 11 in Lawrence.

ODESSA, Texas – Sophomore Ben Partridge’s opening-round 68 helped the No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team to a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships at Odessa Country Club.

The defending national champion Blue Dragons posted a team score of 4-under 284 after 18 holes on Tuesday. Hutchinson leads second-place Odessa by three strokes. Eastern Florida State and New Mexico Junior College are tied for third at even-par 288.

The Blue Dragons counted Partridge’s 68 and even-par 72s from sophomore Harry Crockett and freshmen Blake Saffell and Dominic Clemons.

Partridge’s 68 is tied with Midland’s JT Pittman for the individual player lead. There are 20 players, three of them are Blue Dragons, within four strokes of the individual lead.

Partridge opened strong playing the six holes in 4-under par with birdies on Nos. 2 and 5 and an eagle-2 on the 440-yard par-4 fifth hole. Partridge bogeyed Nos. 9 and 14 to fall to 2-under before back-to-back birdies on Nos. 15 and 16. Partridge finished the round with pars on Nos. 17 and 18.

Crockett got as low as 2-under after scoring an eagle on the 415-yard par-4 sixth hole. Crockett suffered bogeys on Nos. 14 and 16 to close at 72.

Saffell posted three birdies and three bogeys, playing the back nine in 1-under to finish at even-par 72.

Clemons came up big for the Blue Dragons and finished the back nine stroke to keep the Blue Dragons in first place. Clemons was 2-over after 11 holes, but finished with birdies on Nos. 13 and 16 to close at even-par 72.

Crockett, Saffell and Clemons are in a nine-way tie for 12th place at 72.

Sophomore Addison Alonzo posted a 2-over 74 in the opening round. Alonzo had two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey in his round. He is tied for 34th at 2-over par.

The Blue Dragons will once again be paired with No. 1-ranked Midland and No. 2-ranked Central Alabama for Wednesday’s second round. The Blue Dragons will see off beginning at 1:24 p.m.

Hutchinson Community College baseball third baseman Ben McLaughlin was named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week after an incredible final week of the regular season to lead the Blue Dragons to a 4-0 record.

The sophomore from Golden, Colorado, had a huge series against Dodge City to lead the Blue Dragons to a series sweep. McLaughlin hit .688 (11 for 16) and had a 1.438 slugging percentage with three doubles, three home runs and 11 RBIs against the Conquistadors.

In the series opener, McLaughlin was 3 for 5 with five RBIs. He hit a go-ahead two-run home run in extra innings to complete a Blue Dragon comeback.

McLaughlin is currently on a 13-game hitting streak where he is hitting .542 (26 for 48 with six home runs and 25 RBIs).

McLaughlin was the Blue Dragons’ first conference player of the week. Jack Whitlock was the KJCCC Pitcher of the week on April 5.

LOUIS (AP) — Cedric Mullins and Tyler Nevin each homered and Kyle Bradish struck out 11 over seven strong innings for his first career win, leading the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Mullins also added three singles and a stolen base in a 4-for-5 night. Anthony Santander added three hits, including a RBI double for Baltimore. It was the Orioles' first time playing at the new Busch Stadium, which opened in 2006. (AP) — Vladimir Tarasenko had three goals in the third period to break open a tied game and series, and the St. Louis Blues pushed the Minnesota Wild to the edge of elimination with a 5-2 victory in Game 5. Ryan O'Reilly scored for the fourth time in the series and Brandon Saad got the tying goal late in the second period as the Blues upstaged a stellar performance by Kirill Kaprizov. Top-seeded Suns, Heat take 3-2 leads after easy Game 5 wins

MIAMI (AP) — Jimmy Butler scored 23 points, Max Strus added 19 points and 10 rebounds, and the Miami Heat moved one win away from a trip to the Eastern Conference finals by topping the Philadelphia 76ers 120-85.

Victor Oladipo scored 13 for Miami, which got 12 from Bam Adebayo and 10 apiece from Tyler Herro and P.J. Tucker. The top-seeded Heat now lead the East semifinal series 3-2, and improved to an NBA-best 6-0 at home in these playoffs. Joel Embiid scored 17 points for fourth-seeded Philadelphia, which got 14 from James Harden and 12 from Tobias Harris. The 76ers were down by 15 going into the fourth, then gave up 12 consecutive points to open the final quarter.

Devin Booker scored 28 points, Deandre Ayton added 20 and the Phoenix Suns beat the Dallas Mavericks 110-80 on Tuesday night to take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Suns used a huge third quarter to turn a tight game into a comfortable win. Phoenix opened up the second half on an 11-4 run, highlighted by Booker's two 3-pointers, for a 61-50 lead.

UNDATED (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies say All-Star guard Ja Morant is doubtful for the remainder of the postseason after an MRI and further evaluation revealed a bone bruise in his injured right knee.

— Basketball big man Bob Lanier has died after a short illness. He was 73. Lanier was one of the NBA's top players of the 1970s, muscling up beside the likes of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Lanier played 14 seasons with the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks. The left-hander averaged more than 20 points and 10 rebounds. He was the No. 1 draft pick in 1970 after leading St. Bonaventure to the Final Four. In 1992, he made the Hall of Fame, where a bronzed pair of his giant sneakers is displayed.

Jarvis, Raanta help Carolina top Bruins for 3-2 series lead

Sports Headlines for Wednesday

GODDARD, Kan.—Hutch High Baseball dropped their last two regular season games to Goddard Eisenhower Tuesday at Tiger Field in Goddard by identical 11-1 scores.

Game 1 was a suspended game picked up in the bottom of the 4th inning with Goddard leading 7-1 with a runner on third base.&nbsp; Eisenhower scored&nbsp; Carson Adams to make it 8-1, then added 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth when 1st baseman Ethan Eddy knocked in 2 RBI's with a double to left. In the sixth, Cody Hawks doubled, was sacrificed to third and then scored on an error to finish the run rule in 6 innings for Eisenhower.

Tyner Horn&nbsp;got the win for Eisenhower. Horn went five and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out 13.&nbsp;Cooper Adams&nbsp;threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. Nolyn Cunningham&nbsp;took the loss for&nbsp;Hutchinson. Cunningham allowed three hits and five runs over two innings. Kinser Newquist&nbsp;and&nbsp;Mason Seitz&nbsp;each managed one hit to lead&nbsp;Hutchinson in batting. Carson Adams&nbsp;went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Eisenhower in hits.

Game 2 was more of the same as the Salthawks lost again in six inning losing&nbsp;11-1 to Eisenhower. 

Hutchinson got things going in the first with Kinser Newquist&nbsp;driving in a run to take the lead with a double. 

In the bottom of the first inning, Eisenhower tied things up at one when&nbsp;Ethan Eddy&nbsp;grounded out, scoring one run. Eisenhower pulled away for good with a run in the second inning when Carson Roy&nbsp;drew a walk, scoring the lead run.

 Eisenhower then scored four runs in the sixth inning.&nbsp; Eddy,&nbsp;Tyner Horn, and&nbsp;Owen Rush&nbsp;powered the big inning, all with RBIs. Kameron Clark&nbsp;was the winning pitcher for Eisenhower. Clark allowed two hits and zero runs over three innings, striking out one and walking none. Bentley Eckhoff&nbsp;took the loss for Salthawks. Eckhoff surrendered four runs on one hit over three innings, striking out two.

 Newquist&nbsp;,&nbsp;Lakin Franz&nbsp;,&nbsp;Caiden Beavers,&nbsp;Carter Morgan, and&nbsp;Jack Yoder&nbsp;all had one hit to lead&nbsp;the Salthawks. Eisenhower hit the ball well, racked up 11 hits in the game.&nbsp;Cooper Adams,&nbsp;Carson Adams, and&nbsp;Roy&nbsp;each had multiple hits for Eisenhower.&nbsp;

Eisenhower hosts Great Bend on Friday to close out their regular season.

Hutch High now will have to wait to see what regional they will be assigned to.&nbsp; That decision will be made Saturday when KSHSAA releases the regional assignments for 6A.

🎥⚾️ Hutch High Salthawk Baseball travels to Goddard Eisenhower 

With the release of the Jayhawk Conference Division I Softball teams on Monday, the list of historical achievements by the 2022 Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons grew even larger.

With a total of eight Blue Dragons selected, that is the most players to earn postseason awards in one season in team history. Also, head coach Jaime Rose earned her first league Coach of the Year award, sharing the honor with Butler’s Doug Chance.

Pitcher Riley Wertz was named the Jayhawk Conference Freshman of the Year as well as being named to the all-KJCCC first team. Freshman catcher Allie Stipsits was a first-team all-league selection.

Third baseman Natalie Bevan, outfielders Haley Miller and Carley Sterneker and pitcher Emily Munson were named to the All-KJCCC second team. Shortstop Madison Grimes, outfielder Easton Swanson and second baseman Ella Dougherty were named honorable mention.

The Blue Dragons completed one of the best seasons in team history, finishing third in the Region VI Tournament on Sunday in Dodge City. The No. 15-ranked Blue Dragons were 41-8 overall and finished second in the Jayhawk Conference with a 29-3 record, the conference win total was another team record.

RILEY WERTZ – Freshman of the Year, 1st Team

Riley Wertz is the second-straight KJCCC Freshman of the Year for the Blue Dragons, joining Madison Grimes in 2021.

Wertz was the Blue Dragon ace coming out of the bullpen in all 36 appearances she made in 2022– fourth most in single-season history.

Wertz posted a 13-1 record with a 1.35 earned-run average this season with a Blue Dragon single-season and career record and NJCAA-high nine saves. Wertz won her first 10 decisions of the season and her ERA is the first sub-2.00 mark since Holley Kelley in 2016.

The freshman right-handed pitcher from Maize struck out 152 batters in 82 2-3 innings. Wertz’s 152 strikeouts ranked sixth on the Blue Dragon single-season strikeout list. She had at least one strikeout in all 36 appearances.

Wertz set a Blue Dragon single-game record with 18 strikeouts against Garden City on March 19. She had an 11-strikeout performance over 4 2-3 innings against Murray State on Feb. 19.

Opponents hit a scant .144 off of Wertz this season. She allowed only 40 hits, 23 runs and 35 walks in 82 2-3 innings.

Wertz also had plenty to contribute at the plate as the Blue Dragon designated player for most of the season.

Wertz hit .339 (39 for 115) with a team-high eight home runs and 28 RBIs. She also drew a team-high 23 walks this season.

JAIME ROSE – Co-Coach of the Year

The 2022 season will be one of the most memorable for the Blue Dragons’ 18th-year head coach, who earned the first KJCCC Coach of the Year award in her career.

The Blue Dragons finished 41-8 – the 41 wins are the second most in team history and the eight losses tied for the fewest in program history. The Dragons’ 29 KJCCC wins are also an all-time program record.

Region VI champion Butler is 46-2 entering the NJCAA Tournament. The only losses the Grizzlies sustained came against Rose’s Blue Dragons – 6-5 on March 5 in El Dorado and 3-2 on April 6 at Fun Valley.

The Blue Dragons had two 13-game winning streaks this season, tying for the fourth longest win streaks in program history.

When the Blue Dragons jumped into the NJCAA Division I rankings, that was the first time the Dragons were ranked since 2018 and the first Division I ranking since 1989. The Blue Dragons were No. 15 in the final national ranking.

Already the program’s all-time coaching victories leader, Rose reached milestone win No. 500 with the Blue Dragons after a 10-7 victory at Dodge City on March 7.

While her offense steadily improved through her freshman season, it was apparent early that Allie Stipsits was a tremendous catcher.

The freshman from Olathe threw out 34 percent of base stealers this season, nailing 17 baserunners. She also fielded .988 with only four errors in 328 fielding chances and had only three passed balls.

Offensively, Stipsits came on strong and finished with a .364 batting average (51 of 140) with 15 doubles, four home runs and 23 RBIs.

Stipsits had a 4-for-4 game against Barton in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Great Bend on March 25. In the first game of that doubleheader, Stipsits had a clutch game-tying two-run double in a four-run rally in the seventh inning in a come-from-behind 7-5 victory.

The third-year sophomore from Augusta had a strong season hitting cleanup and playing third base for the Blue Dragons this season.

Bevan hit .320 (48 for 150) with five home runs and a team-high 46 RBIs. Bevan added 11 doubles and a triple in slugging .507 this season.

Bevan fielded .917 at third base this season.

Bevan concluded her Blue Dragon career second in all-time RBIS with 115, tied for 10th with 14 home runs, seven in total hits with 125 and tied for sixth in runs scored with 94. She also tied for fourth with 33 career doubles.

The Blue Dragon center fielder from Buhler displayed a little of everything in her sophomore season from her speed around the bases with 24 bunt hits, three triples and inside-the-park home run to her tremendous game-saving catch in deep center field against Butler to preserve a 3-2 victory on April 6.

Miller was the Blue Dragons’ leading hitter this season with a .401 batting average (63 for 157). She had an on-base percentage of .429 with a perfect 16 of 16 in stolen base attempts. Miller had eight doubles and a career-high six home runs this season. She scored a team-high 54 runs and had 30 RBIs.

Miller’s 63 hits were second most on the Blue Dragons. She was one of three Hutchinson players to reach 60 this this season.

Miller has 17 multi-hit games, including a career-high four hits against the Ottawa University JV on Jan. 29. She had five three-hit games.

Making the move from first base to left field this season, Carley Sterneker didn’t stop contributing at the plate in earning all-conference honors for a second-straight season.

She had a season-high four RBIs in March 2 in an 8-0 win over Colby.Sterneker had a season-high four hits against the Ottawa University JV on Jan. 29 and drove in a season-high four runs against Colby on March 2.EMILY MUNSON – 2nd TeamA freshman from Omaha, Nebraska, Emily Munson quickly assumed the No. 1 starting slot in the Blue Dragon rotation. After a couple of shaky starts early in the season, the left-hander settled in and produced a tremendous season.Munson finished the season 10-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 23 starts and 28 overall appearances. Munson logged a team-high 101 1-3 innings and allowed 85 hits, 42 runs and 26 walks while striking out 56. Opposing batters hit .221 against her.Munson had the only four complete games of the season. Her best effort was a seven-inning complete-game one-hitter against Dodge City on April 13 at Fun Valley. Munson struck out a season-high six batters twice this season against Barton and Pratt.From March 16 on, Munson had an ERA of 2.00 over 19 appearances and 76 2-3 innings.MADISON GRIMES – Honorable MentionWhile her numbers weren’t what they were during a second-team All-America season in 2021, Madison Grimes was still the Blue Dragons’ team leader without a doubt this season.Grimes hit .370 (61 of 165) with five home runs and 41 RBIs. She had 13 doubles, a triple and scored 44 runs. Grimes led the Blue Dragons with 23 stolen bases in 24 attempts. Grimes closed the season on an eight-game hitting streak. She had a season-high three hits twice, going 3 for 4 with RBIs and a home run against Dodge City in the Region VI opener on May 6.Defensively, Grimes had a .953 fielding percentage with nine errors in 213 defensive chances.Grimes set Blue Dragon career records for batting average (.460), RBIs (115) and runs scored (119).EASTON SWANSON – Honorable MentionBattling injuries throughout the 2022 season, Easton Swanson still had a strong season in right field for the Blue Dragons.The sophomore from Olathe finished the season hitting .305 (32 for 105) with five doubles, a homer and 17 RBIs. Swanson had a season-high three hits, going 3 for 4 with a go-ahead single in the top of the seventh in a 7-6 Blue Dragon victory at Seward county on April 27.Swanson had a memorable final at-bat as a Blue Dragon with a solo home run on Sunday against Seward County.ELLA DOUGHERTY – Honorable MentionHitting in the leadoff spot since Game 1, Ella Dougherty had a team-high 67 hits and hit .399 (67 for 168) for the season.The freshman from Cross Timbers, Missouri, had 14 doubles, one triple and two home runs this season, scoring a team-high 51 runs and driving in 31 from the leadoff spot. Dougherty had five stolen bases and had an on-base percentage of .466. She had a .985 fielding percentage with two errors in 131 fielding chances.Dougherty put together a 17-game hitting streak, the fourth-longest streak in Blue Dragon history this season. She hit .474 in two-out situations with 12 two-out RBIs. She had three four-hit games and four other three-hit games.
