Hutchinson earned wins over Victoria College Friday, 121-95, and on Saturday following a 112-89 victory over Wilbur Wright College to start 6-0 this season. The Blue Dragons have allowed under 100 points in the last three games and scored the second-most points in program history last Wednesday in the 139-84 win over Labette.

Also ranked from the Jayhawk Conference were Coffeyville at No. 8, jumping up from No. 12 and on a 6-0 start. Butler is also 6-0 and rose from No. 18 to No. 12 in this week's poll. Garden City, 4-0, is No. 22. Seward County, Barton and Cowley all received votes.

Northwest Florida State, Indian Hills and Salt Lake are the top 3 teams ahead of the Blue Dragons this week.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks will host their final home game of the 2022 season on Saturday, November 19, when they host the Texas Longhorns at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Kansas will celebrate its 11 seniors prior to the final home game, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m. on FS1.

Among the seniors being celebrated on Saturday include Jelani Arnold, Earl Bostick Jr., Sam Burt, Zion DeBose, Malcolm Lee, Caleb Sampson, Eddie Wilson, Lorenzo McCaskill, Monte McGary, Mac Copeland and Spencer Roe.

The Jayhawks (6-4, 3-4 Big 12) enter their final home game of the season averaging 7.33 yards per play this season, which ranks second nationally behind Ohio State (7.60). The program record for yards per play in a season is 6.40, set in 1950.

Kansas also ranks in the top-20 nationally in several statistical categories, including fourth in passing efficiency (171.99), seventh in third down conversion percentage (51.7%), 17th in scoring offense (36.9), 18th in rushing offense (210.5) and sixth in fewest sacks allowed (0.80 per game).

Head Coach Lance Leipold has Kansas bowl bound for the first time since 2008, while the Jayhawks also saw their first win over a ranked opponent since 2010 in their 37-16 win over #18 Oklahoma State on Nov. 5. Kansas is coming off a 43-28 defeat at the hands of Texas Tech on Nov. 12.

Texas (6-4, 4-3 Big 12) is led by running back Bijan Robinson, who leads the Big 12 Conference and ranks ninth nationally with 1,158 rushing yards. He’s also first in the conference in rushing yards per game at 115.8 and third in the Big 12 in rushing touchdowns with 12, just one behind the co-leaders. The Longhorns are 1-2 on the road this season and most recently fell to #4 TCU in Austin on Nov. 12, 17-10.

The meeting between the Jayhawks and Longhorns will be the 21st between the two teams, with the Longhorns leading the series at 16-4. It will be the first game played at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium between the Jayhawks and Longhorns since 2018. Texas leads the series in games played in Lawrence at 7-3. Kansas won the last meeting between the two teams in 2021, topping Texas in an overtime thriller, 57-56.

🏀 WBB: Blue Dragons climb to No. 4 in NJCAA Rankings

After one of the wildest weekends of the 2022 NJCAA football season, there was a major shakeup in the Division I national rankings, released on Monday.

The only thing that stayed the same was that the Hutchinson Community College football team remained No. 1 after Saturday's come-from-behind 29-28 win at No. 4 Iowa Western in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The former Nos. 2, 3 and 4 teams in the rankings all lost on Saturday, creating a major shift.

The new Top 5 has Hutchinson (10-0) at No. 1, Northwest Mississippi (10-1) at No. 2, Iowa Western (8-2) at No. 3, Coffeyville (8-2) at No. 4 and Snow College (7-2) at No. 5.

There are two games still to be played in the NJCAA before the final poll is released next Monday. No. 11 Kilgore and No. 6 New Mexico Military plays in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference championship game and No. 5 Snow College travels to No. 7 Lackawanna College.

The top four teams from next Monday's final poll will play in the NJCAA National semifinals either December 3 or 4 at the sites of the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the final poll.

Hutchinson is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the NJCAA and received all 11 first-place votes.

The shake-up started with Northwest Mississippi falling to East Mississippi 36-28 in the MCCAC Playoff championship. Then No. 3 Trinity Valley fell 38-10 to Kilgore in the SJCFC semifinals. Then, there was the No. 1 Blue Dragons' win over the No. 4-ranked Reivers.

Hutchinson trailed Iowa Western 28-17 with 8:34 to play in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/kedzior_dylan_601l">Dylan Kedzior</a>&nbsp;immediately got the Blue Dragons within five points with a 70-yard touchdown run with 8:11 to play.

Two possessions later,&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/hamilton-jordan_jermaine_p88u">Jermaine Hamilton-Jordan</a>&nbsp;blocked a Reiver punt&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2022-23/bios/claytor_jaimelle_g9fn">Jaimelle Claytor</a>&nbsp;returns 40 yards for a go-ahead touchdown and a 29-28 lead.

The Blue Dragons enter the postseason No. 1 for the second time in three seasons. The Dragons also reached to 10-win plateau for the eighth time in program history.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals announced today that&nbsp;Paul Hoover&nbsp;has been named Bench Coach on Manager&nbsp;Matt Quatraro’s&nbsp;coaching staff.

“Paul is a great teammate, an extremely hard worker, always prepared and cares about helping players get better,” Quatraro said. “He will be a tremendous addition to the Royals family.”

Hoover, 46, spent the last four seasons as the Major League Field Coordinator on&nbsp;Kevin Cash’s&nbsp;staff in Tampa Bay, alongside Quatraro. During Hoover’s time on Tampa Bay’s staff, the Rays ranked 4th&nbsp;in the Majors with 322 wins, and made the postseason all four years, including a World Series appearance in 2020.

In his role with the Rays, Hoover assisted Cash and Quatraro on in-game decisions and worked defensively with catchers. Prior to joining the Rays big league staff for the 2019 season, he spent the previous six seasons from 2013-18 as the Rays Minor League Catching Coordinator. His coaching career began in 2012 as the Manager of the Gulf Coast League Rays.

Hoover played professionally for 14 seasons as a catcher, including parts of seven seasons in the Majors with the Devils Rays (2001-02), Marlins (2006-08) and Phillies (2009-10). He appeared in a total of 40 games, and his rookie status was still intact during his seventh and final Major League season in 2010, when he was 34.

Hoover was selected as a shortstop by Tampa Bay in the 23rd&nbsp;round of the 1997 Draft out of Kent State University and was converted to catcher in 1998. His relationship with Quatraro goes back at least 20 years, when they were teammates at Triple-A Durham in 2002.

Hoover resides in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and has two daughters, Cameron and McKenna.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals&nbsp;announced their 2022 team award winners today, which were voted on by the Kansas City Chapter of the BBWAA.&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;was named the Les Milgram Player of the Year and right hander&nbsp;Brady Singer&nbsp;was named the Bruce Rice Pitcher of the Year.&nbsp;Salvador Perez&nbsp;was named the Joe Burke Special Achievement Award winner after winning Player of the Year each of the previous two seasons (2020-21).

Witt Jr., 22, is the fourth rookie to win the Les Milgram Player of the Year Award since it was first established in 1971. The previous three rookies to win the award include&nbsp;Bob Hamelin&nbsp;in 1994,&nbsp;David DeJesus&nbsp;in 2004 and&nbsp;Mike Aviles&nbsp;in 2008. Despite being the youngest player in Royals history to make his Major League debut on Opening Day in 2022, Witt Jr. led the team in games played (150), runs (82), hits (150), doubles (31), triples (6), RBI (80) and stolen bases (30), and ranked 2nd&nbsp;in home runs (20), trailing only Perez’s 23.

His 80 RBI were the most by a first-year player since&nbsp;Pete Alonso&nbsp;had 120 in 2019 and were the most by an American League&nbsp;first-year player&nbsp;since&nbsp;José Abreu&nbsp;had 107 in 2014. He was also one of six players in the Majors in 2022 to record at least 30 stolen bases. That made Witt Jr. the first player in the Live Ball Era (since 1920) to record at least 80 RBI and 30 steals in his first big league season.

Witt Jr. became just the fifth player in Royals history to record a season of at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases, following&nbsp;Jeff Francoeur&nbsp;(2011),&nbsp;Carlos Beltrán&nbsp;(1999, 2001-03),&nbsp;Bo Jackson&nbsp;(1988-89) and&nbsp;Amos Otis&nbsp;(1978), and he was one of two players in the Majors in 2022 with at least 20 home runs and 30 stolen bases, along with Tampa Bay’s&nbsp;Randy Arozarena. He was just the fifth player in the last 49 years with 20 homers and 30 steals in his age-22 season or younger, joining an exclusive list that includes&nbsp;Ronald Acuña Jr.&nbsp;(2019),&nbsp;Mike Trout&nbsp;(2012-13),&nbsp;Álex Rodríguez&nbsp;(1998) and&nbsp;Barry Bonds&nbsp;(1987).

Singer, 26, went 10-5 with a 3.23 ERA (55 ER in 153.1 IP) in 27 appearances (24 starts), earning the most wins by a Royals pitcher since&nbsp;Jason Vargas&nbsp;tied for the Majors lead with 18 wins in 2017. Singer’s ERA was the 5th best by a Royal (min. 150.0 IP) in the Wild Card Era (since 1995), trailing only&nbsp;Zack Greinke&nbsp;in his 2009 Cy Young Award-winning season (2.16),&nbsp;James Shields&nbsp;in 2013 (3.15) and 2014 (3.21) and&nbsp;Yordano Ventura&nbsp;in 2014 (3.20). The last Royal with a lower ERA than Singer’s&nbsp;and&nbsp;a higher win percentage (.667) was&nbsp;David Cone&nbsp;during his 1994 Cy Young Award-winning season, in which he went 16-5 (.762) with a 2.94 ERA (56 ER in 17.12 IP).

Singer made 24 starts and in 7 of them (29.2%), he recorded at least 7.0 innings and allowed 1 run or fewer, which tied for the 4th-most such starts in the American League in 2022, trailing only&nbsp;Martín Pérez&nbsp;(9),&nbsp;Justin Verlander&nbsp;(8) and&nbsp;Shohei Ohtani&nbsp;(8). He recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts on July 23 vs. Tampa Bay, a game in which he did not allow a hit until the 6th inning. He followed that start with 10 strikeouts over 7.0 scoreless innings—and just 1 hit allowed—on July 28 at Yankee Stadium, becoming the seventh Royal with back-to-back 10-strikeout starts and the first in five years.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was seen laughing among teammates in the Kansas City locker room Sunday, shortly after he sustained a concussion during a victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars that raised questions about how to police helmet-to-helmet hits.

Smith-Schuster was coming across the middle to catch a pass from Patrick Mahomes when Cisco hit him high, drawing a flag from the officials. But while Smith-Schuster lay motionless on the Arrowhead Stadium turf, referee Brad Rogers picked up the flag and ruled that the hit was clean and there would be no penalty.

“After discussion on the field,” Rogers said, “the two officials came in and determined that the defender had set and braced for impact and hit shoulder-to-shoulder. They didn't feel it was a use-of-helmet foul.”

Yet replays that were on the video boards at each end of Arrowhead Stadium clearly showed that Cisco's helmet made contact with Smith-Schuster's head, and that contact more than his shoulder inflicted the damage.

The wide receiver's hands were initially frozen in a scene reminiscent of the concussion sustained earlier this season by Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, which raised questions about how to police roughing the passer.

"We were mad,” Chiefs safety Justin Reid said. “I've had a lot of big hits and not once have I made helmet-to-helmet contact like that.”

Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was more succinct: “That was illegal,” he said.

Mahomes clearly remember the hit — and another by Cisco on Marquez Valdes-Scantling later — after Travis Kelce beat the safety for a late touchdown toss. The fiery quarterback had a few words for Cisco on the way to celebrate.

“Obviously there was some helmet-to-helmet contact and we want to get that out of the league as much as possible, for player safety,” Mahomes said afterward. “These guys on defense are playing, too, but by rule, if it's helmet-to-helmet it is supposed to be a flag. I know that guy wasn't trying to. I know it's a bang-bang play.”

Mahomes mentioned that perhaps helmet-to-helmet blows should be reviewed, much like targeting penalties are in college football, though he walked back that thought when asked to clarify what he meant.

“You want your guys to play hard, to play aggressive and play within the rules. That’s what we’ve got to do," Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson said. "You don’t want to take the physicality away from anybody. This is a game where you have to play snap-to-whistle. You never want to hurt anybody, but you want to keep the aggressiveness.”

Smith-Schuster, who signed a one-year prove-it deal with Kansas City, had been on a tear over the past month as he became more familiar with Mahomes and the offense. He caught five passes for 113 yards and a touchdown against Buffalo, seven for 124 yards and a score against San Francisco and 10 for 88 yards last week against Tennessee.

He had two catches for 33 yards before leaving Sunday's game.

“It was scary when you're out there. We saw him after the game and he seemed perfectly normal," Mahomes said, “giggling around, joking around, stuff like that. Just take precautions and get him back healthy as quickly as possible.”

The Chiefs already were missing wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who had scored in three straight games, because of an abdominal injury, and second-round draft pick Skyy Moore has struggled to make an impact all season.

They were helped out Sunday by the emergence of Toney, who caught his first NFL touchdown pass in his second game since a trade with the Giants. Toney finished with four catches for 57 yards along with 33 yards rushing.

“He's a smart kid, and he does pick it up easy, and he's willing to spend time at it, too,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “He's very talented. We're trying to give him some things that he's done before and add one or two things he hasn't done, so he can continue to grow, and obviously the quarterback has trust in him.”

Nets coach Vaughn has no update on when Irving might return

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kyrie Irving is eligible to return from his suspension, but Brooklyn Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said before their game against the Los Angeles Lakers he had no update on when the guard would return. Irving was suspended by the Nets for a minimum of five games on Nov. 3 for refusing to say he had no antisemitic beliefs. Sunday's game was the sixth Irving will miss. Brooklyn's next game is on Tuesday in Sacramento before they finish up their road trip on Thursday in Portland. The Nets have won four of five since Irving was suspended.

Paris organizers reveal mascot for Olympics, Paralympics

PARIS (AP) — The mascots for the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics have been revealed. It's a Phrygian cap. The soft bright red cap is an updated version of a conical hat worn in antiquity. It's also known as a liberty cap. It later became a symbol of the pursuit of liberty in the French Revolution. The Olympic cap mascot is triangular in shape and comes complete with friendly smile, blue eyes, tricolor ribbon and big colored sneakers. The Paralympic version features a prosthetic leg that goes to the knee. Organizers say they didn't want to choose an animal or other creature but instead wanted something that represented an "ideal."

Derek Carr's emotions emerge after Raiders lose to Colts

LAS VEGAS (AP) — After nine frustrating years, Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is fed up. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns, Kadarius Toney showed glimpses of stardom in his second game for the Chiefs and Kansas City rolled to a 27-17 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

Toney, who was acquired a couple of week ago from the Giants, had 33 yards rushing to go with four catches for 57 yards and his first NFL touchdown reception, helping the Chiefs (7-2) win their sixth straight over the Jaguars.

Travis Kelce, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Noah Gray also had touchdown catches for the Chiefs.

The win came at a cost for Kansas City: wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was placed in the concussion protocol after a helmet-to-helmet hit by Jacksonville safety Andre Cisco early in the game. The blow left Smith-Schuster motionless on the turf for a moment, though he eventually stood and walked off with some help.

Trevor Lawrence threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns, both to Christian Kirk, who finished with nine catches for 105 yards for the Jaguars (3-7). Zay Jones also had eight catches for 68 yards while Travis Etienne ran for 45 yards.

The Jaguars became the first team in five years to recover an onside kick to open the game, but their offense squandered the opportunity — and several more. They punted five times and missed a field goal on their first six possessions.

The Chiefs had no such trouble reaching the end zone.

Mahomes, trying to become the third quarterback in NFL history with three straight 400-yard passing games, had 191 by halftime. That included the touchdown reception for Toney, the injury-prone former first-round draft pick.

The Jaguars finally scored on Kirk's catch with 11 seconds to go, then had a chance to add points when Chiefs tight end Jody Fortson inexplicably fumbled the kickoff return. But after a quick completion set up the 41-yard field goal try, Jaguars kicker Riley Patterson yanked his second attempt of the half wide left.

Jacksonville tried to get back into the game after halftime with a plodding drive that consumed nearly 10 minutes, but it fizzled out in the red zone and only resulted in a field goal to make it 20-10.

As so often happens, Kansas City answered with a 75-yard drive that ended in Travis Kelce's touchdown reception.

It was his eighth TD catch of the season and the 65th of Kelce's career, moving him into second in Chiefs history. It also gave Mahomes his 16th game with at least four TD passes, the ninth most by a quarterback since at least 1950.

The Jaguars trimmed their deficit to 27-17 with 5 1/2 minutes to go, when Lawrence converted on fourth down with a pass to Jones, then hit Kirk almost entirely uncovered from 19 yards out for the touchdown.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — No. 1 Hutchinson versus No. 4 Iowa Western was everything a die-hard football fan could hope for — and then some.&nbsp;

Fans had their eyes set on the Nov. 12 matchup from the beginning of the season when the Reivers opened as No. 2 and the Dragons No. 3.

By week two of the season, voters split the No. 2 ranking between Hutchinson and Iowa Western. A week later, Hutchinson was given the outright No. 2 spot and Iowa Western — still undefeated — dropped to No. 3.

When preseason No. 1 NMMI lost in week 6, fans knew Saturday's matchup could be No. 1 versus No. 2 to close the regular season.

Hutchinson ran the table and entered Saturday's contest undefeated, meanwhile, the Reivers dropped a night contest to Coffeyville last Saturday 23-7.

Monday's rankings saw Iowa Western drop to No. 4, meaning the Reivers needed a victory to ensure its playoff hopes. A loss would not necessarily mean a drop outside of the top four, but a win would certainly mean playoff hopes would be alive for a one-loss team.

With 8:34 remaining Saturday, Iowa Western opened up a 28-17 advantage after trailing the Dragons by three at the break.

The Reivers took the first drive of the game and scored six after a 7-play, 74-yard drive that took just 3:08 off the clock.

Bishop Carroll alum Aiden Niedens drove the Reivers down the field against the nation's second-best defense (allowing 10.1 ppg) and capped the drive himself with a 14-yard TD run.

Hutchinson's offense was up for the task against the nation's best defense in Iowa Western (allowing just 9.6 ppg).

On a critical third down, Dylan Laible hit Malik Benson on a quick inside slant. Benson darted through the defense for a 67-yard answer.

Tied at 7, the Dragon defense forced the Reivers off the field after five plays and 12 yards. Oddly, Niedens did not return to the offensive backfield. Instead, James Graham entered as the Iowa Western signal caller.

This was not completely unordinary for the Reivers, as the two quarterbacks were expected to split time. However, Niedens would not return to action the rest of the day.

This became evident when Graham took a hard hit just before halftime and had to be helped off the field. Third-string QB Andre Goodman took the next offensive snap.

Niedens suffered an undisclosed injury on the first play of the first drive. He powered through the pain and delivered seven points for his team, but never returned to the contest.

After the Dragon D did its job on Iowa Western's second drive, Laible hit Marcello Bussey for 39 yards down the field to the Reiver 16.

The drive stalled from there as Hutchinson settled for a 44-yard Cole Segraves field goal.

The Reivers answered the very next play with a 90-yard kickoff return by running back Jaden Koger.

Koger had the hot hand (or feet as it were) as he ran for 122 yards on the day, the first Reiver RB to run for more than 100 yards in a game this season.

Iowa Western entered the day with the most rushing attempts per game in the nation, but the 25th-most yards per carry.

The Reivers ran for 258 on the afternoon, against a team surrendering just 73.

After the Reiver special teams touchdown, Hutchinson averted disaster — twice. On the ensuing return, Jalik Thomas was stripped of the ball. It never hit the ground as Jaimelle Claytor snagged the ball out of the air and saved the possession.

In a moment of deja vu, Jaheim Simmons fumbled his carry around the left end. The ball popped free, but was snagged out of the air by fellow running back Dylan Kedzior. The drive was a three-and-out that lost six yards, but set the stage for the final 50 minutes.

After the teams exchanged punts on the next two possessions, Hutchinson's defense forced Iowa Western off the field on a 4th and 2 at the Dragon 12. The Reivers came away empty-handed after covering 51 yards in 10 plays.

Hutchinson's special teams unit put the Dragon D in poor position when Trevor Whiteman had to fall on a fourth-down snap, that squirted between his legs, for a 17-yard loss.

Iowa Western started at the Hutchinson 27, but mustered just three yards against the stingy Dragon D. The Reivers settled for a 41-yard field goal attempt from Sam Wilber. The kick sailed wide left and Hutchinson took over on offense.

That defensive stop immediately led to Dragon points on a Dylan-to-Dylan connection. Laible sent Kedzior in motion to the left side of the formation. Iowa Western showed zone, but failed to send a defender with Kedzior's 4.3 forty-yard-dash speed.

Laible put some touch on the ball and made sure he didn't overthrow the wide-open Kedzior. The former wide receiver from NEO slowed up to catch the pass and ran for the 76-yard score.

That touchdown put Hutchinson up 17-14 with 1:04 left before halftime.

The momentum that had swung like a pendulum to that point, seemed to be favoring the No. 1 Dragons, perhaps for good. This was especially evident when Graham was replaced after a hard hit just before the half.

His return was uncertain when both teams headed for the locker room.

All the momentum Hutchinson built just before the half, seemed to be completely gone when Iowa Western took a 21-17 lead early in the third quarter, and stretched that lead to 28-17 early in the fourth.

The third-quarter score came on a Graham strike to wide receiver LJ Fitzpatrick. The 61-yard bomb looked nearly identical to the Kedzior reception down the seam in the second quarter.

Iowa Western used six plays to cover 54 yards in the fourth quarter to take an 11-point advantage. The drive was capped with a Koger 4-yard run.

With 8:42 left, Hutchinson desperately needed a big play. Running back Dylan Kedzior put on his superhero cape again and came to the rescue. Behind a wall of blockers, Kedzior skipped out of a would-be-tackler's arms and ran 70 yards to the house.

Hutchinson lined up for two, in hopes of making the 28-23 score a field-goal contest.

Laible had two receivers open on the untimed down, but the ball whizzed by Treymon Echols just as his eyes focused back on his quarterback.

Fast forward to the good part: 2:42 remaining.

For the second time in as many Reiver possessions, the Dragons showed punt block. 

Rewind for just a second. Three weeks ago in Garden City, JJ Hamilton-Jordan rushed to block a punt on 4th and 4 before the half. He ran into the punter and gave the Broncbusters a first down. That first down led to Garden City's only score of the game.

Hamilton-Jordan lined up on the edge against the Reivers Saturday and looked ready to bolt — and bolt he did.

Hamilton-Jordan blocked the punt and Johnny-On-The-Spot, Jaimelle Claytor (who saved the Dragons on a fumble recovery earlier in the game), picked up the blocked punt and headed down the sideline.

Behind a convoy of blockers, Claytor scored the go-ahead TD on a block-six. With the 29-28 advantage, Hutchinson lined up for two again.
