
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs opened its series against the Kingman Islanders on Monday night with a 7-2 win at Hobart-Detter Field.
The Monarchs didn't pick up their first hit until Will Edmunson led the sixth inning off with a single to left field. The Monarchs would tie the game up at two three batters later. Hogan Shelby broke the tie game with a two-run home run over the centerfield fence to put the Monarchs in front, 4-2.
Hutchinson (6-10) scored two more insurance runs in the seventh inning on a two-run single to left by Cooper Harris, giving the Monarchs a 6-2 lead. The Monarchs tacked on one more in the eighth.
Kingman (4-13) collected seven hits in the game, four of which stayed in the infield. The Monarchs recorded six hits in the win, two for extra bases.
Jarrett Flaggert picked up his first win in his first appearance on the mound in relief. Carson Cornelius recorded a three inning save, striking out four to earn his second save of the summer.
Xander Roberts suffered the loss for the Islanders on the mound after carrying a no-hitter into the sixth. He finished with 5.2 innings, striking out six and allowing four runs.
The series will switch to Kingman on Tuesday before returning to Hobart-Detter Field on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
