WICHITA, Kan. – The Tulsa Drillers scored nine unanswered runs and defeated Wichita 9-8 in the series opener.

The Wind Surge stormed out to a great start scoring four first inning runs. Patrick Winkle started the scoring with a two run triple and Alex Isola followed with a two run home run. Wichita added runs in second and the fourth to extend the lead to 6-0.

Blayne Enlow dominated early pitching four innings and allowed a hit and punched out nine hitters. The Drillers offense broke out in the fifth inning and knocked Enlow out after retiring one hitter. Diego Cartaya hit a two run home run to put the Drillers on the board. Enlow picked up strikeout number ten and then the Drillers took advantage of an error. Tulsa added a three run home run from Imanol Vargas.

Tulsa scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to take the lead with a Brandon Lewis RBI single. Brayden Fisher earned the win and Francis Peguero took the loss.

NOTES: The Drillers lead the 2023 Propeller Series five games to two. Yunior Severino hit his 11th&nbsp;home run of the season tied for second in the league.

⚾ Tulsa Drillers rally to defeat Wichita Wind Surge

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Miles Mikolas pitched eight shutout innings, Nolan Arenado hit an RBI double and Nolan Gorman drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Kansas City Royals 2-1 on Tuesday night to split the two-game set between the I-70 rivals.

Mikolas (4-1) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed three hits in working a season-high eight innings. The strikeout total matched the 34-year-old right-hander's effort against Milwaukee in 2019.

“It's one of the best feelings in sports, to show up when your team needs you,” Mikolas said. “Every game, there's someone who you kind of got to lean on. If you get to be that guy, it makes you feel good.”

Mikolas threw 102 pitches. He said he did not lobby to go out for the ninth inning.

“I got a little blister on my finger from a slider I threw there near the end,” Mikolas said. “It's not going to be a problem, but you don't want to force those things.”

St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was impressed with Mikolas' showing.

“We needed him to go. It was a phenominal start,” Marmol said. “We knew we needed this game.”

The Cardinals needed a defensive gem in the fourth inning to keep the game scoreless. With two outs and MJ Melendez on second, Michael Massey singled to right. Brendan Donovan threw a strike to the plate and Willson Contreras applied the tag to Melendez.

“Two outs, Massey squared that ball up and it took a good one hop to the right fielder,” Kansas City manager Matt Quataro said. “We got to take a chance to score there every time. They made a good throw and a good tag. MJ did a good job to try and evade it. The way the game was going, you could tell it wasn't going to be a high-scoring game."

Gionvanny Gallegos replaced Mikolas in the ninth and gave up a double and single to start the inning. Vinnie Pasquantino scored on a fielder's choice by Bobby Witt Jr., cutting the deficit to a run. Gallegos went on to retire the next two hitters and record his seventh save.

The Cardinals got a run in the sixth with two outs against Carlos Hernández (0-2). Paul Goldschmidt reached first on an infield single. Arenado hit a run-scoring double to left-center. Arenado has a team-high 18 RBIs in interleague play this season.

“We didn't score many runs, but Mikolas didn't give up any so it's a good win,” Goldschmidt said.

St. Louis extended its lead to 2-0 in the eighth Gorman's sac fly off Aroldis Chapman, scoring Tommy Edman.

Zack Greinke started for the Royals but didn't figure in the decision. The 39-year-old right-hander pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with six strikeouts. He ranks first in starts (526) and innings pitched (3,309 1/3), second in wins (224) and third in strikeouts (2,929) among active pitchers.

“He's a really talented guy,” Mikolas said. “Anytime you go up against a guy like that, you want to do good. It makes you want to impress. I watched him on TV.”

After off days Wednesday and Thursday, the Cardinals return Friday, continuing a stretch of 13 of 15 games on the road between May 22-June 7.

Tommy Edman made his first career start and third overall appearance in center field in the regular season, previously appearing as a defensive replacement on July 12, 2019 verus Arizona (one inning) and May 21, 2022 at Pittsburgh (five innings). The 28-year-old Edman also appeared in center in Game 4 of the NLCS at Washington (one inning). This season, the former Gold Glove second baseman has appeared at shortstop (27 games), second base (21 games), and right field (seven games).

With a win, the Cardinals (15-13) achieved a winning month of May for the 16th time since 2000.

“We were in a deep, dark place earlier in the month, a team meeting kind of place,” Mikolas said. “We had to assess things. We've definitely turned it around. I think our best ball is still to come.”

Royals: OF Kyle Isbel (left hamstring strain) still undergoing a rehab process after getting hurt running out a bunt earlier this month against Baltimore. He is doing more baseball activity, but a rehab assignment is not in the immediate future.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;- Kansas State head men's golf coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/mens-golf/roster/coaches/grant-robbins/1886">Grant Robbins</a>&nbsp;announced today that the program has signed community-college transfer Alex Lindstrom to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Wildcats beginning with the 2023-24 season.

Lindstrom, who hails from Halmstad, Sweden, is transferring to K-State after completing a successful one-year stint at Hutchinson Community College. "We feel like we have made a great addition with Alex," Robbins said. "We saw him play earlier this spring and were really impressed with his ballstriking and his calm and confident demeanor on the course. He came over to the U.S. last fall and quickly established himself as one of the best players in the country at the junior college level. He is passionate about the game and is an extremely hard worker. We are really looking forward to getting him here and working with him this fall." Lindstrom won the 2023 NJCAA Division I Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award and was a First Team PING All-American after collecting five top-10 finishes, including victories in consecutive KJCCC events that culminated with a conference championship. Lindstrom finished the year ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA and was the highest-ranked freshman as he also earned a spot on the NJCAA All-Freshman team. ⛳ HutchCC golfer signs to play at K-State

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— Wichita State Athletic Director Kevin Saal announced on Tuesday morning that the university has parted ways with interim head baseball, coach Loren Hibbs.&nbsp;

The Shockers finished the 2023 season with a 30-25 record overall and 13-10 in American Athletic Conference play.

<a href="https://hutchpost.com/posts/a7f8839a-6caf-48f4-9649-79ff745d56c3">Hibbs was named the AAC Coach of the Year</a> following the Shockers' regular season in which WSU finished third place in the conference. McKinney was named a First Team All-American by D1 Softball. This is the second straight season D1 Softball has rewarded the Shocker superstar with All-America honors. McKinney was a second team selection in 2022. The Norborne, Mo., native is leading the country in hits (103) and batting average (.520) for the second straight season, and is on track to become the first player in NCAA DI history to repeat as both batting average and hit champion in back-to-back seasons. She added 13 doubles, 7 triples, 5 home runs, 33 RBI and 76 runs scored to her impressive senior campaign. Her 7 triples and 76 runs scored all rank in the Top 10 nationally. McKinney is the career and single season record holder at Wichita State in batting average, hits, runs and on base percentage. A two-time American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and four-time First Team All-Conference selection, McKinney adds to a robust resume.&nbsp;McKinney&nbsp;finished her career with 378 career hits, fifth most in NCAA history. D1 Softball tabs McKinney first team All-America

ARLINGTON, Texas – TCU defeated Oklahoma State, 12-5, to win the Horned Frogs’ fourth Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball title in nine years. The Horned Frogs’ offense stayed hot as they scored the most runs (48) in the Big 12 Championship by a team since 2013.

TCU improved to 4-1 in the Big 12 Championship final (2014, 2016, 2021, 2023).

The attendance of 14,673 for the final is a Big 12 Championship record while the total attendance of 132,291 throughout the Championship was the second-highest in the league’s history.

TCU got on the board in the second inning after an RBI infield single by Anthony Silva that scored Tre Richardson. Luke Boyers followed up with a three-run home run to right center, which gave the Horned Frogs a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, Richardson hit a bases-clearing double that scored Brayden Taylor and Karson Bowen, but Cole Fontenelle was thrown out at home by Oklahoma State third baseman Tyler Wulfert. The inning continued with an RBI single from Austin Davis which scored Kurtis Byrne.

Oklahoma State responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. A bases-loaded walk by Nolan Schubart and an RBI fielder’s choice by Wulfert cut the lead down to 8-2 after three innings.

TCU tallied a run in the top of the fifth inning from an RBI groundout by Davis, making it 9-2.

Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when Davis singled for the Horned Frogs, scoring Byrne. Oklahoma State tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off a three-run home run by Schubart to make it a 10-5 game.

The Horned Frogs answered in the next half inning with Taylor’s two-run home run, to put TCU up 12-5 the rest of the game.

Taylor was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship.

Chase Hoover pitched the first two innings for TCU, giving up two hits, two runs, three walks and threw four strikeouts. He was relieved by Luke Savage (W, 3-3) who pitched four innings giving up two hits, no runs and one walk on two strikeouts. Garrett Wright closed out the game by striking out the side for the Horned Frogs.

Ben Abram started the game for the Cowboys (L, 8-3) going 2.0 innings, giving up four hits, four runs, no walks and adding three strikeouts.

During the game it was announced that Oklahoma State will host a regional in Stillwater June 2-5. Full selections for the 2023 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship will be revealed Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN2. TCU recieves the Big 12's automatic bid to the field.

The Horned Frogs’ offense stayed hot as they scored the most runs (48) in the Big 12 Championship by a team since 2013.TCU improved to 4-1 in the Big 12 Championship final (2014, 2016, 2021, 2023).The attendance of 14,673 for the final is a Big 12 Championship record while the total attendance of 132,291 throughout the Championship was the second-highest in the league’s history.TCU got on the board in the second inning after an RBI infield single by Anthony Silva that scored Tre Richardson. ⚾ TCU Victorious in 2023 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship Final

 ST. LOUIS (AP) — Josh Staumont and Mike Mayers came within six outs of the first combined perfect game in major league history before Nolan Arenado lined a leadoff single in the eighth inning of the Kansas City Royals' 7-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

“You're definitely aware of it,” Mayers said of a perfect game. “I tried to keep it business as usual. The goal was to throw up as many zeroes as you possibly can and that's the mindset I stayed in.”

Staumont,, a 29-year-old right-hander, served as the opener in a planned bullpen game for the Royals. He made his first major league start in his 167th appearance and struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning, throwing 14 pitches.

“That was one of the most exciting moments for me of the year,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “For him to set the tone like that was unbelievable.”

Mayers, a 31-year-old left-hander who pitched for the Cardinals from 2016-19, made his third appearance for the Royals this season after eight starts at Triple-A Omaha. He retired 18 consecutive batters before Arenado lined a 1-0 slider to left on his 72nd pitch.

“He did a great job today,” Arenado said. “We just couldn't get anything going.”

Willson Contreras followed with a single to center that stopped an 0 for 29 slide.

“I can't say what I was thinking there,” Mayers said with a chuckle. “I made two very bad pitches in that inning and they're good hitters. They made me pay for them.”

Taylor Clarke relieved and retired Brendan Donovan, Paul DeJong and Alex Burleson in order. Amir Garrett pitched a perfect ninth to finish a two-hitter and Kansas City's second shutout this year.

St. Louis was shut out for the sixth time and has scored 13 runs in its last six games.

“It was just hard to get anything going offensively,” St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said. “Today was a tough one.”

There have been 23 perfect games, the last by Seattle’s Félix Hernández against Tampa Bay on Aug. 15, 2012. All perfect games have been complete games.

Kansas City had not shut out the Cardinals since May 22, 2015, and had not blanked them in St. Louis since June 2, 2014.

In the opener of a two-game series, the Royals tied their season high with 16 hits and stranded 14 runners, one shy of their high.

Nicky Lopez matched his career high with four hits, and Nick Pratto and Vinnie Pasquantino had three each. Mike Massey hit a two-run homer and Bobby Witt Jr. added a solo homer.

Adam Wainwright (2-1) allowed three runs and nine hits in five innings for the Cardinals, playing their 18th game in a stretch of 19 days in a row. The Cardinals and the Royals have back-to-back days off Wednesday and Thursday.

“The stuff's OK. The location's OK,” Wainwright said. “Nothing great. We're in one of those funks right now. Baseball is a crazy game like that. I'm trying to take a big picture view. The little moments, I'm not winning right now."

Pasquantino hit an RBI double in the third.

“I'm feeling solid and ready to go tomorrow,” Pasquantino said. “It was kind of a weird game because it was tougher to score runs early and then we were able to break it opener later.”

MJ Melendez hit a run-scoring triple in the fifth and scored on Freddy Fermin's bunt down the first-base line for a 3-0 lead.

Pasquantino had an RBI single off Steven Matz, who turned 32 Monday, in the eighth, and Witt and Massey homered in the ninth against Drew VerHagen.

Witt snapped an 0-for-12 skid with the home run. He became the second Royal to hit 30 career homers before turning age 23.

CF Lars Nootbar left after Pratto doubled leading off the third inning, appearing to pull up near the wall. Nootbar has slammed into the wall catching a Massey drive in the second. The Cardinals said Nootbar had back spasms.

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (right shoulder impingement syndrome) is progressing well after throwing a recent bullpen.

Cardinals: OF Dylan Carlson (left ankle sprain) has been taking swings from the right side. On Monday, he took swings left-handed. Once he is comfortable, he will have short rehab stint in the minors.

RHP Zack Greinke (1-5, 4.55) starts Tuesday for the Royals and RHP Miles Mikolas (3-1, 4.23) for the Cardinals. Grienke is 13-7 with a 3.48 ERA against St. Louis. Mikolas pitched a four-hit shutout in his only game against the Royals on May 21, 2018.

White's putback as time expires lifts Celtics past Heat, forces Game 7 in East finals

MIAMI (AP) — Derrick White scored on a putback as time expired and the Boston Celtics moved to the brink of the greatest comeback in NBA playoff history, holding off the Miami Heat 104-103 to force a Game 7 in the Eastern Conference finals. Jayson Tatum scored 31 points, Jaylen Brown scored 26 and Marcus Smart added 21 for the Celtics. Jimmy Butler made three free throws with 3.0 seconds left for a one-point Heat lead. Smart missed a 3-pointer, but White grabbed the rebound and scored as time expired. Butler scored 24 points and Caleb Martin scored 21 for the Heat.

Dellandrea scores twice in 3rd, Stars stay alive with 4-2 victory over Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ty Dellandrea scored twice in a 1:27 span midway through the third period and the Dallas Stars beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 on Saturday night to stay alive in the Western Conference Final. The Stars escaped elimination for the second game in a row and head to Dallas for Game 6 on Monday night down 3-2. Dallas is attempting to become the fifth team in NHL history win a series after being down 3-0. Dellandrea had the first multigoal game of his playoff career, and it helped back a 27-save performance from Jake Oettinger. Jason Robertson and Luke Glendening also scored, and Thomas Harley had two assists. Chandler Stephenson and Ivan Barbashev scored for the Knights, and Jonathan Marchessault had two assists to extend his points streak to four games. Adin Hill made 30 saves.

Ukraine's Kostyuk booed after not shaking hands with Belarus' Sabalenka at French Open

PARIS (AP) — At first, Aryna Sabalenka thought the boos and derisive whistles coming from the French Open crowd were directed at her after a first-round victory. Instead, the negative reaction was aimed at her opponent, Marta Kostyuk, for not participating in the usual post-match handshake up at the net. Kostyuk, who is from Ukraine, avoided so much as any eye contact with Sabalenka, who is from Belarus, after the match, instead walking directly over to acknowledge the chair umpire. It's something Kostyuk has been doing whenever she has faced any opponent from Russia or Belarus since her country was invaded by Russia, with help from Belarus, in February 2022. Sabalenka won 6-3, 6-2.

Bucks finalizing deal to make Raptors' Adrian Griffin their head coach, AP source says

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A person familiar with the situation says the Milwaukee Bucks are finalizing a deal to make Adrian Griffin their head coach. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal was still being completed. The decision comes after the Bucks fired Mike Budenholzer in the wake of their stunning first-round playoff loss to the Miami Heat. Griffin has spent the last five seasons as a Toronto Raptors assistant coach on Nick Nurse's staff. The Raptors fired Nurse last month.

New bill to build Athletics stadium on Las Vegas Strip caps Nevada's cost at $380 million

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Oakland Athletics are asking Nevada for $380 million for a 30,000-seat, $1.5 billion retractable roof stadium on the Las Vegas Strip. A bill introduced Friday in the Nevada Legislature details the long-awaited financing plan. Lawmakers have a little more than a week to consider the plan before they adjourn June 5. The bulk of Nevada's contribution would come from $180 million in transferable tax credits from the state and $120 million in county bonds, which can vary based on interest rate returns. The plan doesn't directly raise taxes, meaning it needs a simple majority vote in the Senate and Assembly — not two-thirds approval.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) —&nbsp;Lane Thomas opened the game with a home run, Corey Dickerson's three-run shot highlighted an eight-run sixth inning and Luis Garcia had six hits as the Washington Nationals outslugged the Kansas City Royals 12-10 on Friday night.

The eight-run inning was the largest scoring inning in Nationals' history and came against Kansas City's Jordan Lyles and Josh Staumont. Lyles (0-9) allowed five earned runs in five innings, giving up six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

“There was a lot of back-and-forth, up-and-down or whatever terminology you want to use,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Being down 9-2 certainly didn’t feel good, but the guys came back and we felt like we have a shot.”

The 34-year-old Dickerson, in his 11th big league season, has eight hits and has two homers and seven RBI since being called up on May 17.

Washington (22-29) led 9-2 when its half of the sixth was over, helped by RBI from Garcia (two RBI) and Joey Meneses off of Staumont, who gave up four earned runs in one-third of an inning.

“It feels great, especially when the team is battling every at-bat and we never got down and stayed focused so it’s a great feeling,” Garcia said. “My whole approach every at-bat is to stay up the middle and go the other way as well.”

The Royals (15-37) scored the next six runs, highlighted by a Bobby Witt Jr.'s three-run homer off Erasmo Ramirez in the seventh, cutting the lead to 9-8. Witt also homered in the sixth inning for his second career multi-homer game and a career-high with five RBI.

“He's got all the tools, couple infield hits, the double down the line and two homers,” Quatraro said. “Big night for him all around, very happy for him.”

Jeimer Candelario added a two-RBI triple and later scored in the eighth to extend the Nationals lead to 12-8.

Patrick Corbin (4-5) worked 6 1/3 inning, allowing six runs, seven hits, four walks with six strikeouts.

“I would've like to have finished the seventh there, but that's the one thing looking back,” Corbin said. “I felt good and in games like this you always try to give your bullpen a break, but the guys that came in kept the lead and the offense tonight was amazing. To come away with a win like that is truly a team win.”

Garcia hit two doubles in the sixth inning, marking the first time a Nationals' batter has had two hits in an inning. That was part of his career-high six hit performance. He is just the third Washington player to have that many hits in a game.

The Royals called up OF Drew Waters and optioned INF/OF Nate Eaton to Triple-A Omaha.

SPRINGFIELD, MO – A classic pitcher's duel on Friday night in which the visiting Wichita Wind Surge come up on the short end of a 1-0 defeat.

Cardinals starter Wilfredo Peirera dazzled as he punched out a season high ten hitters enroute to his third win of the season. He pitched five and one third innings allowed just four hits and a pair of walks.

Wichita starter Aaron Rozek rolled through the game pitching a season high seven innings and allowed one run on three hits, walked one hitter and five strikeouts. Rozek finished strong striking out the final three hitters he faced throwing just 84 pitches in the longest outing by a Wind Surge starter this season.

The lone run of the game happened in the third. Arquimedes Gamboa opened the inning on walk, Justin Toerner singled and the runners advanced on foul ball catch. Jose Alvarez groundout allowed Gamboa to score giving the Cards a 1-0 lead.

The Wind Surge threatened and out-hit Springfield for the game 5-3. Wichita stranded eight runners in the game and were two for seven with runners in scoring position. The Surge left the bases loaded in the fifth inning and a runner at third in the sixth. In the ninth inning the Cardinals centerfielder Mike Antico threw out Will Holland at home plate trying to score from second base. Logan Sawyer earned his fourth save.

The Surge dropped to 19-23 and Springfield improves to 20-23.

NOTES: The Wind Surge were shutout for the fourth time this season. Wichita has played five 1-0 games in its history and are now 2-3 in those contests.

ARLINGTON, Texas –&nbsp;Despite a home run from Jake English for the second straight game, Kansas fell to Kansas State 7-1 on Friday afternoon in Big 12 Championship play at Globe Life Field.

With the loss, the Jayhawks finish postseason play with a 1-2 mark and have been eliminated from the conference tournament. The Jayhawks finished the season with an overall mark of 25-32. Kansas State moved to 35-23 on the season and will now face TCU on Saturday.

“I’m super proud of our guys,” Head Coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “We have fought for a long time and we certainly wanted a different result, but I loved the fight, and have all year. It’s a special group of guys that helped build an awesome foundation that we can build on.”

After a scoreless first from starter Sam Ireland, Kansas State tagged the righty for three runs in the second inning to grab a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats got their first two men on in the second and then Kaelen Culpepper hit a three-run home run to put the home team up 3-0.

The Jayhawks didn’t stay off the scoreboard for long, though. English led off the inning with a solo home run to left, marking his second home run in as many games at the Big 12 Championship. Kansas got another man on in the inning, but a double play ended the threat.

English’s home run marked the 75th home run of the season for the Jayhawks, which tied a program record established in 2006.

The Wildcats stretched their lead in the fourth with a two-run inning. The Wildcats scored on a sacrifice fly and an error to grow the lead to 5-1. Right-hander Kolby Dougan pitched the fourth through the sixth innings for the Jayhawks and after giving up two unearned runs in the fourth, he threw up zeroes in the fifth and sixth. The righty finished going three innings, allowing three hits, two unearned runs, while striking out four and walking two.

He gave way to left-hander Gavin Brasosky, who took over in the seventh with the Jayhawks down four. Kansas State scored two in his only inning of work in the seventh to take a 7-1 lead. Kansas put two men on in the eighth when English singled and Chase Jans walked to put two on with one out. But a strikeout and ground out ended the threat. K-State starter German Fajardo exited in the eighth, but went 7.1 innings, allowing just one run on five hits, while striking out nine.

With the loss, Kansas has completed its first season under coach Dan Fitzgerald.

⚾ Jayhawks fall to Wildcats at Big 12 Championship

Jafet Molinares has been hired to become the Hutchinson Community College cross country program's new head coach.

Molinares takes the reigns of the Blue Dragon cross country program from Justin Riggs, who resigned after the NJCAA National Track and Field Championships last week. Riggs had been in charge of the program since 2015.

Molinares is the sixth head coach in Blue Dragon men's track and field history and the fifth in Hutchinson women's history. He will also be a Blue Dragon track and field assistant coach.

"I am excited to welcome Jafet Molinares as the new head men's and women's cross country coach at Hutchinson Community College," Blue Dragon Athletic Director Josh Gooch said. "The successful programs he has been a part of have prepared him to take Blue Dragon Cross Country to new heights."

The 2023 Greyhound men's track team won the Region VI Indoor team championship.He was an assistant coach for one season at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was on staff for Iowa Central's men's indoor national championship team.Molinares started his coaching career as a graduate assistant for cross country and track and field at Fort Hays State University.A 2013 graduate of Felix Varela High School in Miami, Molinares ran collegiately at Iowa Central for two seasons and for two seasons at Fort Hays State.
