WICHITA, Kan. — The Wizards (6-2) finished the non-conference weekend a perfect 2-0.

Sunday's victory against the Fort Riley Big Red One (12-8) did not come without some adversity on Armed Forces Day.&nbsp;

D'Quan Lynch of the Big Red One scored 22 of his game-high 40 points in the first half.&nbsp;

Lynch scored the game's first five points and hot shooting put Fort Riley up 12-4 just 3:30 into the contest.&nbsp;

That lead bulged to nine before Kaelon Gary and Parker Austin went to work.&nbsp;

Gary and Austin each hit triples as the Wizards pulled within five by the media timeout.&nbsp;

A Curtis Profit Junior bucket tied the game at 25 before the Big Red One got a free throw and bucket to close the quarter.&nbsp;

Another Austin triple tied the game at 28 before a Gary three put Wichita up for good.&nbsp;

Wichita closed the half on a 26-17 run to take a 10-point halftime lead.&nbsp;

Jai'Raye Velez scored 12 of his 20 total points in the third frame to pull Fort Riley within four before Jeremiah May hit a big three that put Wichita up 69-60 with 5:26 remaining in the third.&nbsp;

A Lynch basket with 1:25 to go pulled Fort Riley back within four, but an Anthony Cameron And-1 dunk gave Wichita the 80-73 lead.

Fort Riley tied the game thrice in the final frame (at 84-, 86-, and 93-all) but Gary went to work again in the final three minutes to secure the Wizard victory.

Gary's back-to-back buckets made it 97-93 with 3:30 to play.&nbsp;

A Gary dish to May put the Wizards up six before a Michael Barnes And-1.

Javaughn Harrison made things interesting by answering a Gary three with a triple of his own.&nbsp;

Hanging onto a 106-102 lead with 22 seconds remaining, the Wizards had to hit free throws down the stretch to hold off the Big Red One.

Gary finished with 25 points, Austin 21 and May 15, while Cameron and Barnes each dropped 14.

Wichita is on the road June 10 and June 17 before returning home to Friends University to face the Tri-State 66ers Sunday, June 18, at 2 p.m.

The heroics by the journeyman goalie-turned-starter was reminiscent of the stop made by Washington's Braden Holtby in Game 2 of the 2018 final in Vegas that became known as the save after the Capitals won the Cup. Hill's save even happened at the same end of the ice.

Panthers not about to panic over Game 1 loss to Golden Knights in Stanley Cup Final

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice might have been channeling his inner Aaron Rodgers when he told the assembled media to "breathe." The Panthers lost Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final 5-2 to the Vegas Golden Knights. Maurice's Florida team rallied from a 3-1 series deficit in the first round to beat the Presidents' Trophy-winning Boston Bruins. He knows it's way too early to hand the Stanley Cup to the Golden Knights. Game 2 is Monday in Las Vegas.

Yankees' Judge knocks open bullpen door while making running catch

LOS ANGELES (AP) — New York Yankees star Aaron Judge knocked open the door of the visiting bullpen at Dodger Stadium while making a spectacular running catch in the eighth inning. Judge might have saved a run for the Yankees with his sprinting catch on J.D. Martinez's liner into the right field corner. The AL MVP made the catch an instant before running into the bullpen door, which came partly open when he hit it. Judge hung onto the ball, and Max Muncy tagged up and advanced to second for the Dodgers, who trailed 5-3.

Heat looking to get to the line more, while Nuggets vow to be better in Game 2

DENVER (AP) — For the Miami Heat, shooting at Denver's 5,280 feet of mile-high altitude during Game 1 of the NBA Finals wasn't a problem. Not shooting from the foul line 15 feet away from the rim was. The Heat made NBA history by shooting only two free throws in Game 1 as Denver struck first in the title series with a 104-93 win. PARIS (AP) — Coco Gauff has won an all-teen showdown to reach the fourth round of the French Open. Gauff is a 19-year-old American who beat 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1 on Saturday at Roland Garros. Gauff was the runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Paris a year ago. They could meet this time in the quarterfinals. But both need to win one match apiece first. Swiatek continued her powerful run through the bracket with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wang Xinyu. Swiatek has won four of her six sets so far by a 6-0 score. Men advancing Saturday included 2022 runner-up Casper Ruud and No. 6 seed Holger Rune.

McIlroy tied for lead at Memorial by making fewest mistakes

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Rory McIlroy didn't look like he was going anywhere at the Memorial until he wound up with a share of the lead. That's how tough it was at Muirfield Village. McIlroy had a 70 and was tied with Si Woo Kim and David Lipsky. That leads to a Sunday that figures to be wide open. There are 22 players separated by three shots. That includes Hideki Matsuyama and Patrick Cantlay. They helped everyone's cause by making triple bogeys at various points in their rounds. Spectacular debut: Rose Zhang shoots 66 to take lead into Mizuho Americas Open finale

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Two-time NCAA champion Rose Zhang moved into position to win in her professional debut, shooting a 6-under 66 on Saturday to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Mizuho Americans Open. The former Stanford star had six birdies in a bogey-free round on a raw, overcast day at Liberty National in jumping to the top of the leaderboard. It's nothing new for the 20-year-old from California who won 12 of 20 events in her two years in college, with many viewing it as a sign of things to come. Cheyenne Knight, Atthaya Thitikul and Aditi Ashok were tied for second.

Bettman: NHL still committed to keeping Coyotes in Arizona after arena referendum failed

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Commissioner Gary Bettman says the NHL is still committed to Arizona after Tempe voters rejected a referendum for a Coyotes arena. Bettman says the team is looking at other areas around Phoenix for a long-term home. The future of the Coyotes is now a major question as they go into a second season playing at a 5,000-seat college rink on Arizona State's campus. At the other end of the spectrum are the Ottawa Senators who are close to being sold for what Bettman expects will be around a billion dollars. Bettman says the sale process is close to being done.

Wichita jumped out to an 8-2 advantage before the Program Select Missouri Bulldogs (0-3) took a brief 9-8 lead.

A Parker Austin swat on defense led to his layup on the offensive end.&nbsp;

Kaelon Gary's three with 5:45 left in the first quarter put Wichita up 15-11 and the Wizards never looked back.&nbsp;

🏀 Wizards wallop Bulldogs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Elehuris Montero’s two-run triple highlighted Colorado’s five-run first inning and the Rockies hung on for a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.

Matt Carasiti (1-0) earned the win with 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Austin Gomber, who allowed a pair of runs on six hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings. Justin Lawrence recorded four outs for his second save.

“To win a game like that, when you go to the bullpen in the third inning, you need your relievers to all step up,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “They all did a nice job.”

Carasiti’s win was his first since Aug. 19, 2016, his only other major league victory.

“Honestly, I didn’t even really realize it,” Carasiti said. “But, it does feel good. It means a lot, helping the team win.”

The Rockies’ first three hitters reached safely in the first, with Charlie Blackmon — who was hit by a pitch to lead off the game — scoring on Ryan McMahon’s soft liner over shortstop. McMahon is hitting .487 (19 for 39) with 15 RBIs in his last 10 games.

Randal Grichuk’s one-out single added another run before Montero tripled down the right-field line, scoring two more. Montero scored on Brenton Doyle’s sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.

“That was a good inning for us,” Montero said. “We took advantage and executed when we needed to. It gave us confidence going into the rest of the game.”

Royals starter Daniel Lynch (0-1) threw 38 pitches in the laborious first inning, then settled in to complete five innings. He allowed five runs, three earned, and six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

“Hits like that are going to happen,” Lynch said. “I tried to stay within my control and keep on attacking guys. I felt like I did that, but I put myself in a hole hitting the first guy.”

Colorado added a run in the sixth on Blackmon’s RBI hit as Kansas City reliever Josh Staumont walked three in the frame.

Nick Pratto’s third home run, a 438-foot solo shot to right, got the Royals on the board in the first. It was Pratto’s first career leadoff homer.

Bobby Witt Jr. had three singles for Kansas City but also committed a first-inning error that led to two unearned runs. He was also picked off third base ahead of Maikel Garcia’s RBI hit in the third inning which cut Colorado’s lead to 5-2.

“Bobby just tried to be too quick on the double-play ball,” Quatraro said. “I don’t know if we get (Jurickson) Profar on that.”

Drew Waters’ RBI single in the eighth made it 6-3. Salvador Perez’s two-out single in the ninth capped the scoring.

The Royals have lost 14 of 19 and are 8-23 at home.

Rockies RHP Nick Mears was reinstated from the 15-day IL and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque.

WICHITA, KS – The Tulsa Drillers jumped on the Wind Surge early scoring five first inning runs and defeated Wichita for the third consecutive game 8-1 on Saturday.

Tulsa loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a walk and Imanol Vargas hammered a grand-slam four batters into the game and then Eddys Leonard followed with a solo home run to extend the lead to 5-0.

Emmet Sheehan faced the minimum for the first 14 hitters and pitched five and a third innings allowing one run on three hits and earned his fourth win of the season.

The Wind Surge scored their lone run in the sixth with a single from Alerick Soulaire and a two out RBI single from Brooks Lee.

The Drillers have won four of the first five games in the series.

WSU Shocker Caravan to visit Salt City on Monday

WICHITA, Kan.—The second quarter of the TBL Conference round 2 playoff game between the Wichita Sky Kings and the Shreveport Mavericks proved to be significant as the Sky Kings had just taken a 41-29 lead over the defending National Champion Mavericks with 4:30 to go in the quarter. Elias Díaz and Nolan Jones hit two-run doubles in the eighth, among six hits by the Rockies in the inning. McMahon has reached safely in 11 consecutive games, batting .425 (17 for 40) with five homers and 15 RBIs.

Kansas City has lost nine of 12, dropping to 17-40.

Brent Suter (4-0) allowed one hit over two scoreless innings.

Justin Lawrence struck out Jackie Bradley Jr. with the bases loaded for his second career save and first this year.

After McMahon’s first-inning homer, Lyles retired 13 of his next 15 batters. He allowed two hits over five innings, striking out eight.

Lyles has allowed runs in the first inning of 10 of 12 starts, giving up 15 runs in the first.

“He threw the ball great,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He worked the ball up and down in the zone. It was a really positive outing.”

Kansas City built a 2-1 lead on homers by Edward Olivares in the second and Drew Waters in the third. Both were off Chase Anderson, who gave up four hits in six innings.

“Obviously wish I could have a couple of pitches back,” Anderson said. “The lazy curveball to Olivares and then the first pitch to Waters weren’t great pitches.”

Silver is preparing to announce whatever penalty is coming Morant's way for the second gun incident shortly after the end of the NBA Finals. He suspended Morant for eight games in March after the Grizzlies star held a gun in a suburban Denver nightclub while streaming himself live on Instagram. Detroit Pistons announce deal with new coach Monty Williams

PHOENIX (AP) — Merrill Kelly threw seven strong innings, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. ripped a two-run double and the Arizona Diamondbacks won their season-high sixth game in a row by beating the Atlanta Braves 3-2. It was the first game of a series between two of the top teams in the National League. It's no surprise the Braves are among that group, but the emergence of the Diamondbacks has caught some by surprise. Arizona is now 12 games over .500 for the first time since 2018 and on a six-game winning streak for the first time since 2020. The Braves have lost five of their past seven.

NBA planning to announce latest Ja Morant decision after Finals, Silver says

DENVER (AP) — The latest sanctions, if any, that the NBA plans to levy against Memphis guard Ja Morant for his second instance of displaying a gun on social media will be announced shortly after the finals, Commissioner Adam Silver said Thursday. Silver did not say what the penalties were, not even saying if Morant would be available at the start of next season. Morant was suspended for eight games by the NBA in March for an incident where he broadcast himself on Instagram displaying a gun in a suburban Denver club, and was suspended by the Grizzlies last month after another video showed Morant displaying what appeared to be a gun yet again.

Referee Eric Lewis not selected to work NBA Finals while league looks into tweets

DENVER (AP) — Eric Lewis was not selected as one of the 12 referees who will work the NBA Finals, while the league continues to investigate whether he used a Twitter account to defend himself and other referees from online complaints. Lewis had been chosen to work the finals in each of the last four seasons. But after some now-deleted tweets were revealed last week, the league opened an investigation into whether Lewis violated NBA rules by speaking about officiating in an unauthorized manner. It has not been determined if Lewis was using the account.

She had made the quarterfinals at four of the most recent five majors. That includes a year ago at Roland Garros. Mertens is a 27-year-old Belgian who is seeded 28th. GENEVA (AP) — Polish soccer referee Szymon Marciniak has apologized for speaking at a business event tied to a far-right politician and was confirmed by UEFA to officiate next week's Champions League final. Marciniak's appointment for the game between Manchester City and Inter Milan on June 10 was at risk. A Warsaw-based anti-racism group alerted UEFA to his conference appearance this week. UEFA says it accepted Marciniak's "profound apologies and clarification." UEFA adds that anti-racism group Never Again had also then asked for the referee to be retained. Marciniak also refereed the World Cup final in Qatar.

BOSTON (AP) — Rafael Devers doubled to break an eighth-inning tie and the Boston Red Sox overcame Chris Sale's early exit because of shoulder soreness to beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2. Sale came out with two out in the fourth after walking Nick Senzel, with Boston trailing 1-0. After the Reds tied it off Chris Martin (1-1) in the eighth, Devers doubled in Alex Verdugo following a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning. Devers hit a deep drive to straight away center that nearly went out. Boston added five more runs in the inning, with Connor Wong capping the outburst with a two-run shot into the Green Monster seats.

Silver did not say what the penalties were, not even saying if Morant would be available at the start of next season.
