"Ortiz was outstanding," Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton said. "He was totally in control of his delivery. The big inning was when he got out of the bases-loaded jam. He gave up one run, but he stayed composed and did a nice job."

Carlos Hernandez (1-9), one of five Kansas City pitchers, gave up the home run to Hayes and took the loss.

The Royals lost a series for the seventh time in eight tries and would need to go 16-12 in their final 28 games to avoid matching the franchise record of 106 losses from 2005.

Kansas City squandered a solid effort by starter Cole Ragans, who allowed three hits, struck out nine and walked one in carrying a shutout through seven innings. With the nine strikeouts, he finished the month of August with 53 Ks, the second-most in Royals history behind Dennis Leonard's 55 in June 1977. He has a 1.73 ERA in seven starts with the Royals since being acquired in mid-July from Texas for Aroldis Chapman.

Shelton gave credit to Ragans when asked what changed after seven fruitless innings on offense.

"Ragans was out of the game, quite honestly," he said. "That's really good stuff, a left-handed fastball at 99 and a change-up and a cutter. That's a good young pitcher."

Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro was equally impressed.

"(A) continuation of what he's been doing," he said. "All his pitches (were) effective, around the zone, in the zone, getting chase when he needed it, swing-and-miss in the zone. I would guess he might say it wasn't his best command. He lost some balls arm-side, but was able to correct. But, his stuff's so good that even when he was behind in the count he would get swing and miss."

The first hit of the game came with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, when Bobby Witt Jr. lined a single into left field. Salvador Perez then lined a single off the glove of Hayes, sending Witt to third with no outs. After striking out MJ Melendez, Ortiz walked Nelson Velazquez, loading the bases. Drew Waters hit a line drive that tipped off Connor Joe's glove at first. Waters was retired, 4-3, but he picked up the game's first RBI.

Ragans allowed his first baserunner on a leadoff walk to Joe in the fifth. He later gave up a two-out single to Peguero, ending his no-hit bid. He struck out Jack Suwinski to end the threat.

Steven Cruz made his MLB debut Tuesday for Kansas City. He was acquired in the offseason in a trade for Michael A Taylor from the Twins. He became the 34th pitcher to appear in a game this season for Kansas City, extending a club record set last year at 32.

The Royals added two runs in the ninth on an RBI single by Freddy Fermin.

Royals: RHP Steven Cruz was selected from Triple-A Omaha. In a corresponding move, LHP Taylor Hearn was optioned to Triple-A Omaha following Monday night's game.

The Pirates and Royals conclude their three-game series Wednesday night. The Pirates will send Andre Jackson (0-1, 4.91 ERA) to the mound. Kansas City has not announced a starter.

WICHITA, Kan. - Michael Helman and Willie Joe Garry Jr. hit a few bombs, and Reggie Grace was excellent starting on the mound for the Wind Surge. Their performances helped push the first place Wind Surge over the San Antonio Missions 5-2 in game one of the six game home series.

Wichita put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third. All three runs were off a three-run home run hit by Helman.

San Antonio drove in a run in the top of the fourth. Nathan Martorella hit an RBI double on a line drive to right field that bounced off the wall.

Garry Jr. hit his third home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth. The solo home run flew over the right field wall and extended the Surge lead back out to three.

Ethan Salas hit an RBI single on a line drive to center field in the top of the seventh inning for the Missions.

Wichita earned a late insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Patrick Winkel hit a sacrifice fly that drove in a run after Yoyner Fajardo was able to reach third by a stolen base and a throwing error.

Regi Grace made his first start of the season on the mound for the Wichita Wind Surge. He pitched three and two thirds innings where he only gave up one run off one hit. He struck out four batters and walked one other batter. Jordan Carr earned the win, and his record improves to (1-0).

The San Antonio Missions starting pitcher Gabe Mosser pitched six innings. He gave up four runs off four hits. He also struck out four batters and walked two more. He was credited with the loss, and his record falls to (0-3).

The Wichita Wind Surge have won 13 of their last 15 games and improve to (30-22, 58-62) and the San Antonio Missions fall to (25-27, 62-59).

⚾ First place Wind Surge win sixth straight

Midfielder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>&nbsp;scored a season-high five points in a shutout victory over Seward County and the Hutchinson Community College freshman was named the Jayhawk Conference's Division I Women's Soccer Player of the Week on Tuesday.

The freshman from Wichita, had two goals and one assist in the now-No. 16 Blue Dragons' 5-0 KJCCC victory over Seward County on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex. She earned her first career game-winning goal. It was her second multi-goal game of the season.

The Blue Dragons went 1-0-1 last week with a scoreless draw at Garden City and the five-goal win over the Saints.

Defensive back&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/scruggs_jordan_m11u">Jordan Scruggs</a>&nbsp;was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.

TRE RICHARDSON – Co-Offensive and Special Teams Player of the WeekRichardson had one of best debuts in Blue Dragon history on Saturday. The freshman from Topeka accounted for 268 all-purpose yards against the Bulldogs and scored three touchdowns – a 32-yard run, 57-yard reception and a 92-yard kickoff return.

Richardson had 32 rush yards, 93 receiving yards, 113 kickoff return yards and 30 punt return yards The 268 all-purpose yards by Richardson is second in a Blue Dragon debut only to Roger Frazier's 330 all-purpose yards against Dodge City in 2005.

Richardson's third-quarter 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown was the key play of the game. With Hutchinson leading 14-6 after Navarro took more than 7 minutes off the clock to kick a field goal, Richardson took the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and a 21-6 lead just 12 seconds later.

JORDAN SCRUGGS – Defensive Teams Player of the WeekScruggs, a sophomore from Overland Park, had a Pick-Six in a dominant defensive performance by Hutchinson.

Scruggs jumped a route for an interceptions and traveled 52 yards untouched for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Scruggs had two total tackles.

MANHATTAN, Kan. - K-State head baseball coach Pete Hughes has announced the promotion of Austin Wates to Associate Head Coach on Tuesday. 

"Austin is quite deserving of this promotion, "said Hughes. "He carries the responsibilities of a trailblazer in a sport where black coaches are alarmingly underrepresented. He always does this with composure grace and integrity.""He has become a great role model for all young coaches. More importantly, he has established himself as one of the best offensive minds in college baseball and a tireless recruiter. We are so fortunate that the Wates family are part of our program ad community moving forward," added Hughes. &nbsp;With the primary focus on hitters, outfielders, and baserunners in addition to recruiting responsibilities, Wates concluded his fifth season with K-State where he helped guide the Wildcats to their third consecutive run in the Big 12 Baseball Championship semifinals.In 2023, Wates' offense generated top 10 performances in five K-State offensive categories: home runs (77 – 3rd), stolen bases (114 – 5th), walks (340 – 3rd), sacrifice flies (34 – T-4th), and runs batted in (379 – 9th).The Wildcats 340 walks ranked 13th&nbsp;in the final Division I standings, including five straight weeks as the national leader from March 22 to April 24, while finishing 19th&nbsp;in stolen bases."I am extremely grateful for the opportunity Coach Hughes has given me to help grow this program," Wates said on his recent promotion. "Both Gene Taylor and Casey Scott have been unrelenting in their support of our ultimate goal which is to be a national brand. This promotion puts a lot of faith and trust in me, and I will never take that for granted. In 2014, he was named the Pacific Coast League's Best Baserunner after leading the league with 37 stolen bases. The Jayhawks will host Illinois on Friday, Sept. 8, before taking on Big 12 opponents BYU, UCF, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Kansas State throughout the 2023 season.

Help welcome the Jayhawks back to the Booth by joining us for the Hawk Walk! New for 2023, the Jayhawks will walk down “The Hill” to the locker room two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff. They will be dropped off near the Campanile, with Hawk Walk taking place as they walk down the Hill. Fans can line the walk and greet them as they arrive for the day’s game.

New for 2023, all tickets and parking passes will be accessible via mobile device to increase efficiency. Enjoy the re-imagined Gameday on the Hill before every game during the 2023 home season. You will find entertainment from local cover bands and DJs, and food trucks at the bottom of the Campanile hill.

Gameday on the Hill will feature a fan tailgate that includes open-air and tented seating and socializing areas, TV’s, tailgating games,&nbsp;light snacks and a cash bar. Admission comes with&nbsp;one drink token&nbsp;which you will receive upon check-in. Non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages will be available. Returning from the 2022 season, Kansas Football games will feature a sideline personality to serve as an in-game host to help bring the energy on gamedays.

As the Jayhawks take the field, the team entrance will feature the return of the “Hollow K” formation from the Marching Jayhawks for the team to run through in addition to added pyrotechnics.

Before each home game a former Kansas Jayhawk student-athlete will continue the tradition of raising the gameday flag on the north end of the stadium to honor the program’s history.

Fans can also expect to see a new look around David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, with new branding and signage throughout the stadium.

With Friday night’s kickoff slated for 7 p.m. CT, parking lots will not open to fans until 2 p.m. In addition, beginning mid-afternoon, some campus roads will become one-way thoroughfares to accommodate fan arrival to the game.

With portions of K-10 and 23rd&nbsp;Street undergoing construction, fans are encouraged to arrive early to avoid delays. “Well, good afternoon, everyone. We’re excited for game week. It'll be fun to watch a lot of veteran guys play that are excited about getting the season started, and then all the new guys that are going to have an opportunity to play out at the Bill for the first time. We have a number of young players that we feel are getting better and just need those game experience reps. So, I think we'll play an awful lot of guys, partly because of injury and partly because we just want to find out more about people, especially on special teams. We know this is going to be a really good football game. Coach Tuke (Tom Matukewicz) does a great job at SEMO. I’ve known about his program and SEMO for a long time. They're a playoff team, perennially, in the FCS. They’re probably the best team in the OVC this year. They have really good talent. So, we've got to play exceptional football to give ourselves an opportunity to be successful. That's the key for us. We've got to continue to push these young guys because they need to show up and then play well on Saturday.”

Starting the season 2-0-1, the Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team moved up two spots in the first NJCAA Division I regular-season rankings released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons are No. 16 this week after decisive victories over Northeastern Junior College and Seward County and a scoreless tie against Garden City.

Hutchinson plays three road games in this week's rankings period. The Blue Dragons travel to Dodge City on Wednesday and play a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday in Enid, Oklahoma against Crowder College and NOC-Enid.

Dating back to last season, the Blue Dragons have been ranked in eight consecutive polls. That's the longest consecutive run as a ranked team since the 2016 season.

The Blue Dragons are one of 1 of 5 teams ranked in the Top 20 this week.

Barton is the highest-ranked KJCCC team at No. 10. Butler is at No. 11 with Hutchinson at No. 15, Cowley at No. 18 and Coffeyville at No. 19.

Iowa Western received all seven first place votes and maintained the No. 1 spot in the national rankings. Salt Lake is No. 2, Tyler is No. 3, Eastern Florida State is No. 4 and Monroe is No. 5.

Hutchinson's 5-0 victory over Seward County on Saturday was the program's and head coach Sammy Lane's 249th all-time win.

⚽ WSOC: Blue Dragons climb to No. 16 in NJCAA rankings

After an interesting opening week of the junior college football season, the Hutchinson Community College football team climbed back to No. 1 in the first NJCAA Division I football rankings of the season released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons (1-0) traveled to No. 11 Navarro last Saturday and defeated the Bulldogs 42-6. Previous No. 1 Iowa Western had a much-closer game on Saturday at Dodge City, defeating the Conquistadors 27-20.

This is the fifth time in program history that the Blue Dragons are the No. 1 team in the NJCAA Rankings.

The first time at No. 1 was a five-week run in 2019. The 2020/21 Blue Dragons started the season No. 1 in the preseason rankings and went wire-to-wire to win a national championship. The 2021 Blue Dragons were preseason No. 1, but lost the season opener, ultimately finishing at No. 3. Last season, the Blue Dragons spent six weeks at No. 1 before falling in the NJCAA Championship Game.

The Dragons received seven first-place votes to IWCC's three and narrowly moved past the Reivers. Hutchinson had 147 poll points to Iowa Western's 143. Yet to open its season, Northwest Mississippi stayed at No. 3. Kilgore moved up to No. 4 and Garden City had the biggest jump of the week, climbing five spots to No. 5.

Butler slipped one spot to No. 13 after a five-point loss to Garden City. Highland and Coffeyville are both receiving votes this week. Coffeyville fell from No. 6 after the Scotties upset the Red Ravens on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons open the 2023 season at Gowans Stadium at 11 a.m. on Saturday against the Ellsworth Panthers.

The Blue Dragons have been ranked in 19-consecutive ranking periods.

🏈 Blue Dragons move to No. 1 in NJCAA Rankings

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Like a rite of autumn on the patchwork of fields of western Kansas, farmers will soon climb into their combines and bring in the harvest, taking advantage of whatever good weather might come their way.

If it happens to be a Saturday, they are probably tuning the radio to Kansas State football.

It has been that way for generations across the corn belt, a quaintly American scene that has played out on farms ranging from Iowa and Missouri to Oklahoma and Nebraska. Other farmers there might be searching airwaves for their beloved Cyclones and Tigers, or Sooners and Huskers, and quite often the old rivals would be playing each other.

Yet the ties that once bound so many schools together have been shattered by conference realignment. Shared history and cultural norms have been cast aside in the pursuit of money. And the latest round of maneuvering has birthed a soon-to-be 16-team league that will stretch from the sun-splashed beaches of Florida to the sun-baked deserts of Arizona.

There, fans will be tuning in not from a combine on the prairie but from blankets in the sand.

“What we can lose among all of this realignment are all sorts of traditions that give sports meaning,” said Victoria Jackson, a former NCAA track and field champion and now an associate professor of history at Arizona State, which will move from the Pac-12 to the Big 12 next year along with Arizona, Utah and returning member Colorado.

Jackson, who teaches about the intersection of sports and society, likened college athletics to European soccer, where teams that once had similar “generational and community attachments” are now owned by sovereign wealth funds and foreign billionaires.

“If that sense of meaning starts to decay,” Jackson continued, “people begin to field alienated from their team — that it is no longer theirs — and then the sport as a whole is in a state of declension, even if revenues continue to rise.”

Realignment has shaken every conference in the country, yet the fallout is especially evident in the Big 12.

Perhaps the strongest cord binding schools together was geography. Without motor coaches and chartered planes to whisk its teams from one campus to another, it was prudent decades ago that schools play others close to them. And by the time the precursor of the Big 12 — the old Big Eight — had settled on eight teams with the return of Oklahoma State in 1957, the longest distance for a conference game was 727 miles from Colorado to Missouri.

As the Big 12 added teams from the Southwest Conference in 1996, its footprint enlarged The arrival of West Virginia and TCU in 2012 further pushed the league's boundaries, and the arrival of UCF this season and Arizona State next season will create conference games that require one school to travel more than 2,100 miles.

In fact, depending on how it is measured, the Knights will travel more than 15,000 miles over the course of six road games this season, more than any other Power Five team. No. 2 is fellow Big 12 newcomer BYU at more than 12,000 miles.

“The big challenge," Central Florida coach Gus Malzahn admitted recently, "will be if you play a night game and you get back and the sun is coming up, getting prepared for the next week. But that’s something we’ll have to adjust to.”

The shifting landscape of college sports has done more than just obliterate geographic sensibility, though. It has torn apart the commonalities that once made schools with shared mores a legitimate conference.

Take the original Big Eight, where every member was a public school and five land-grant institutions, which were created by the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890 to focus on teaching agriculture, science, military science and engineering. As a result, students at Kansas State Agricultural College, or what is now Kansas State, often came from the same background and socioeconomic class as those from Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, which is now Oklahoma State.

These days, there are three private and religiously affiliated schools with BYU joining Baylor and TCU. And a focus on agriculture and science has given way to a myriad of specialties, ranging from business to medical schools.

The original Big Eight also had similar and somewhat modest enrollments, at least by Division I standards; once Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah join next year, the last eight additions will be eight of the nine largest schools in the Big 12.

The sheer size of the universities is reflected in their locales: The Big Eight was once made up of small college towns, where the university was the largest employer and life hummed to the beat of the school year. By next year, eight of the nine largest cities in the league will be newcomers, and not one with a population fewer than 100,000 people.

“There was always this sense that the Big Eight was a family,” said Jeff Bollig, who worked in the league office. "It was smaller; there were eight schools. They were easy to get to. There was a lot of commonality. There was just that family feel about it.

“I understand the premise of getting different schools, different cultures from different time zones. As the league changes, it's natural," Bollig added. "But it takes time to create some allegiance and affinity for those other schools.”

It also takes time for rivalries to develop.

The “Border War” between Kansas and Missouri was rooted in actual Civil War-era bloodshed, but it largely ended in 2012 when the Tigers joined Texas A&amp;M in leaving for the SEC. The “Bedlam Series” between Oklahoma State and Oklahoma will likewise go by the wayside after this year, when the Sooners join Texas in departing for the SEC.

“I’m a traditionalist when it comes to conference rivalry games,” Cowboys coach Mike Gundy said. “The Bedlam game is over because Oklahoma chose to leave the Big 12, period. It’s not nothing to do with Oklahoma State. Do I like that? No. Do I like that conferences have broken up in the past? No, I don’t. But I also know that we have to control what we can control.”

To be fair, some of the newcomers fit rather easily into the fabric of a new-look Big 12.

Arizona was founded as a land-grant college, like so many of the original Big Eight schools. Colorado is merely returning to the conference where it spent more than six decades before its 2011 departure for the Pac-12. And Houston played regularly against Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech before the dissolution of the old Southwest Conference.

“Those rivalries are going to naturally take care of themselves,” predicted Cougars coach Dana Holgorsen, who will return to the league after previously coaching at West Virginia. “I think it'll happen a little quicker, and that's great for college football. That's great for the Big 12. Certainly, that's great for Houston and our fan base."

Besides, Gundy said, nobody seemed to ask coaches, players and fans what they thought before changing conferences.

Culture and shared history cast by the wayside as the Big 12 and other leagues realign

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Johan Oviedo pitched a two-hitter for his first complete game in 53 major league starts, Ke’Bryan Hayes had four hits and Zack Greinke lost his ninth consecutive decision in the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 5-0 win and the Kansas City Royals. Oviedo struck out five and walked two while throwing a career-high 112 pitches. It was just the 28th complete game in the major leagues this season and Oviedo’s first complete game in 150 professional starts dating to 2016. The Royals were blanked for the 14th time this season and held to two hits or fewer for the eighth time.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Blake Snell struck out nine in seven shutout innings and Garrett Cooper had three hits and three RBIs to lift the San Diego Padres to a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. San Diego’s victory came after being swept in a three-game series against Milwaukee. St. Louis lost for the 10th time in 12 games. The Cardinals have been outscored 26-4 in their last four games — all losses. Snell (11-9) allowed just two hits. Adam Wainwright (3-10) surrendered just one run on eight hits in six innings.

DENVER (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. fended off two fans, including one who made contact with him in right field, while sparking the Atlanta Braves to a 14-4 rout of the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. Acuña tied career highs with four hits and five RBIs, hitting his 29th home run and stealing two bases to increase his major league-leading total to 61. He is one homer shy of becoming the first 30/60 player. One fan got his arms against Acuña during the middle of the seventh inning, just after Atlanta scored four runs to open a 9-4 lead. Two security people quickly grabbed the fan and, as they tried to drag him away, a third security person approached.

BOSTON (AP) — Jose Altuve completed the first cycle of his career with a two-run homer over the Green Monster in the eighth inning, and the Houston Astros rolled past the Boston Red Sox 13-5. Altuve struck out swinging to lead off the game, then doubled in the third, singled in the fifth and tripled in the sixth. His homer made him the first Astros player to hit for the cycle since Brandon Barnes against Seattle on July 19, 2013. Yordan Alvarez added a three-run homer as part of a six-run sixth inning and José Abreu hit a solo home run for the Astros, who won their third straight.

The preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year missed some spring practices while continuing to rest a shoulder injury he sustained last season. But it was a back issue that popped up in fall camp that left Daniels questionable to start Friday night's opener. Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold confirmed his starters Monday by revealing his first depth chart of the season. Kansas faces a big step up in competition next week against Illinois.

It's no surprise Mahomes was a unanimous choice by The Associated Press for the top spot among quarterbacks. A panel of nine AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at QB, making their selections based on current status entering the 2023 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points. Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers and Jalen Hurts finished behind Mahomes in that order.

Now, there’s no telling how many big games the coach affectionately known as “Big Red” will win. Reid was a near-unanimous choice by The Associated Press for the top spot among NFL head coaches, receiving eight of nine first-place votes. A panel of nine AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five head coaches, making their selections based on current status entering the 2023 season. First-place votes were worth 10 points. Second through fifth-place votes were worth 5, 3, 2 and 1 points, respectively. Six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick, Kyle Shanahan, Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh finished behind Reid in that order.

Adam Wainwright (3-10) surrendered just one run on eight hits in six innings.DENVER (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. fended off two fans, including one who made contact with him in right field, while sparking the Atlanta Braves to a 14-4 rout of the Colorado Rockies on Monday night. Acuña tied career highs with four hits and five RBIs, hitting his 29th home run and stealing two bases to increase his major league-leading total to 61. He is one homer shy of becoming the first 30/60 player. One fan got his arms against Acuña during the middle of the seventh inning, just after Atlanta scored four runs to open a 9-4 lead. "When he got behind he was able to execute..”It was just the 28th complete game in the major leagues this season and the first complete game in 150 professional starts for the 26-year-old right-hander dating to 2016. Oviedo had never before gotten an out in the eighth inning, must less pitch the ninth.“I was trying not to think about anything,” Oviedo said. “I was very excited. I tried to just check my mind and make good pitches.”Catcher Endy Rodríguez lobbied Shelton and pitching coach Oscar Martin to allow Oviedo to finish.“Going into the ninth, I didn't plan on pitching him, because he was at 97,” Shelton said of the pitch count. “I figured that was good. Endy Rodríguez made a pretty strong push. He kept saying, ‘Let’s go, he's fine.' ... I figured: young catcher feeling it. We were hitter by hitter, but it was good for Endy and good for Ovi.”Pittsburgh won at Kansas City for the first time since Aug. 20, 2015.Kansas City (41-92) didn't advance a runner past first base. The Royals were blanked for the 14th time this season and held to two hits or fewer for the eighth time.“We didn't put too many good swings on him,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said.Greinke (1-13) gave up two runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, dropping to 0-9 in 17 starts since beating Baltimore on May 3. The 39-year-old right-hander is tied with Oviedo, Kyle Freeland and Rich Hill for second in the majors in losses, trailing only teammate Jordan Lyles at 15. Grienke had only one 1-2-3 inning.“He was a little bit off with his command,” Quatraro said. “It's amazing how he can compete and get out of trouble.
