KANSAS CITY, Mo.—NFL Hall of Famer&nbsp;and&nbsp;Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown&nbsp;visited Kansas City today to introduce the ownership group of Kansas City’s newest professional sports team, the Kansas City Goats.

Tim Brown is the Commissioner of The Arena League, a rejuvenated arena football league set to start play in June of 2024. The Kansas City Goats will play home games at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City.

The ownership group of the Kansas City Goats includes Chiefs Hall of Famer Christian Okoye, Gates BBQ COO George Gates and sports radio personality Steven St. John.

“The excitement bubbling around this team shows with such a great group of local owners stepping forward to lead this team. This group of individuals possesses all the attributes needed to successfully run a team, both on the field and off the field,” said Tim Brown.

The Arena League announced that Kansas City would be awarded a franchise in May. When Kansas City was announced, fans were asked to submit team name suggestions to the league.

Steven St. John announced the team’s chosen name.

“There were a lot of different ideas coming from the fans. As examples of suggestions that were sent in, we had the Kansas City Potholes, the Kansas City Kings, and the Kansas City Ribs. Of the thousands of suggestions sent in, one of them stood out,” said Steven St. John.

“We will be playing our games at Municipal Auditorium. Boss Tom Pendergast was responsible for pushing through the construction of that building. His faction was nicknamed the Goats. To pay homage to our home arena and to the history of Kansas City, we will be known as the Kansas City Goats,” said Steven St. John.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Matt Vierling capped a three-run eighth inning with a two-run double that lifted the Detroit Tigers over Kansas City 3-2 on Monday night and sent the Royals to their ninth loss in 11 games.

Taylor Clarke (1-4) gave up Akil Baddoo’s leadoff double, hit Riley Greene with a pitch with two outs and walked Spencer Torkelson.

“There was a lot of good in the last third of the game, offensively,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “There was a lot of good in the pitching department and our outfield defense was sensational.”

José Cuas relieved and walked Kerry Carpenter on four pitches, forcing in a run and ending Detroit’s 20-inning scoreless streak. Vierling sliced a sinker to the opposite field in right.

”The first couple of games in Seattle I hit the ball hard, had good at-bats,” Vierling said. “Talking to our hitting coaches about it, my process was good, swinging at the right pitches, so I knew something would happen at some point. Luckily it happened at that time.”

“I almost feel like we stole that win,” Vierling said. “That’s huge for us. Being able to win as many as we can, especially like that, I think it gives us a lot of confidence late in games.”

Brendan White (2-2) entered with two on and one out in the seventh and retired pinch-hitter Matt Duffy on a flyout and struck out Nicky Lopez.

Kansas City-area native Alex Lange struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 15th save in 18 chances.

“He’s very trustworthy,” Hinch said. “We’re going to give him the ball in important outings.”

Kansas City dropped to 27-68, last in the AL Central.

MJ Melendez, Freddy Fermin and Nick Pratto had consecutive singles in the fourth, the latter two driving in runs. Fermin had three of the Royals' six hits.

“He’s been swinging the bat well for the most part,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Royals starter Jordan Lyles allowed three hits in six shutout innings.

“He had a really good changeup,” Quatraro said. “That was the best one of the year. Really flooded the zone, made them make decisions and the defense made plays behind him.”

Detroit’s Matt Manning gave up two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

“I think I had really good command of all my pitches," Manning said. “I executed. I got ahead of guys, and that’s when I’m most effective.”

RHP Zack Greinke, placed on the 15-day IL on July 5 with right shoulder tendinitis, threw a bullpen session Sunday and is expected to return to the mound against the Tigers. “Everything was good yesterday,” Quatraro said. “We’re on track for him to make a start Thursday.”

Tigers LHP Tarik Skubal (0-0, 0.00) makes his third start of the season Tuesday, opposing Royals LHP Daniel Lynch (2-4, 4.18).

Mikolas gave up three runs on seven hits. He threw three perfect innings Friday night against Washington in a game that was halted by rain. Dylan Carlson drove in the other two runs and scored three for the underachieving Cardinals, who have won six of eight but remain last in the NL Central. Miami has lost four straight.

ATLANTA (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. is on pace to do more than just join an elite 40-40 club in baseball history. The Braves outfielder is threatening to obliterate the previous high mark for power-speed combination in a season. Of the four players who have delivered seasons with at least 40 homers and 40 stolen bases, none accomplished the feat with more than 46 steals. Acuña is on pace for 41 homers and 77 steals. He could become the charter member of baseball’s 40-50, 40-60 and 40-70 clubs. Acuña’s 23 homers and 43 steals are big reasons the Braves boast the majors’ best record.

DALLAS (AP) — The name of the annual Texas-Oklahoma football matchup has been changed back to the Red River Rivalry, ditching the unpopular Red River Showdown used since 2014. Allstate was announced Monday as the new title sponsor of the game played every year at the Cotton Bowl amid the Texas State Fair in Dallas. The game was long known as the Red River Shootout before being changed to the Red River Rivalry in 2005. The rivalry dates to 1900 and this year’s meeting on Oct. 7 will be the 119th matchup between the Longhorns and Sooners.

NEW YORK (AP) — Past men's basketball national champions Baylor and Duke will meet at Madison Square Garden during the upcoming season. The December 20 game will be the first meeting between the two schools since an Elite Eight game in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Duke beat Baylor 78-71 in that South Regional final on way to the fourth of its five national championships. Baylor won its only national title two years ago. The Bears finished 23-11 and were 11th in the final AP Top 25 poll last season. Duke was 27-9 in coach Jon Scheyer’s first season and was ranked 12th.

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA has announced it is creating another women’s basketball tournament that it will operate like the men’s NIT as a second option for 32 teams that do not make the NCAA Tournament. The Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament will debut in the upcoming season. It brings the men’s and women’s NCAA postseason opportunities to an equal number. An NCAA-operated second option for women was one of the key focuses of an external gender equity report on the NCAA. Women’s teams that didn’t make the NCAA Tournament in the past had the opportunity to play in an independently operated WNIT. The WNIT says the tournament will continue with 48 teams.

HOYLAKE, England (AP) — Cameron Smith never gets emotional about anything. That changed Monday when he had to return the claret jug as the defending British Open champion. Now it's about winning it back, and Smith knows that won't be easy. He says it's still hard to believe it's been a year since he won at St. Andrews. LOUDON, N.H. (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. mastered another Monday matinee to win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the first time in 30 career Cup races at the track. Joey Logano finished second. He dominated in the No. 19 Toyota en route to his third win of the season.

HAYSVILLE, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat the Haysville Aviators, 10-8 on Monday night, and take the series two games to one.

Will Edmunson led off the Monarchs ninth with a single and was one of 11 Hutchinson (13-14) batters to come to the plate in the inning. Brett Black pulled the Monarchs within one when he doubled home two runs to get within 8-7. Paris Pridgen then reached on an error that scored a run to tie the game at eight. Cal York and Hogan Shelby each drove in a run with RBI singles.

After Haysville (13-16) took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, the Monarchs tied the game with three of their own in the fifth. Edmunson delivered with a single to pull within 3-1, and then Jaden Gustafson tied the game with a two-run triple.

The Monarchs scored one more in the sixth on an error to grab a 4-3 lead. The Aviators responded with three in the bottom half to go back in front, 6-4.

Edmunson led the Monarchs with a 4-for-6 night at the plate, while Gustafson and York each had a two-hit night. Gustafson and Black had a two RBI game. The Monarchs out-hit the Aviators, 12-6, while both teams had 10+ strikeouts (Hutchinson 14, Haysville 11).

A Norborne, Mo. native, McKinney earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice in May from Wichita State. She is a three-time American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team member and an Easton/NFCA&nbsp;All-America Scholar Athlete. On the field, her numbers are well documented. She holds several career and single season records at Wichita State, while also racking up 378 career hits - fifth most in NCAA history. The Top 30 honorees will be announced in October.&nbsp;The selection committee will then determine the top three honorees in each division from the Top 30, and the nine finalists will be announced in November.&nbsp; From those nine finalists, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will choose the 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year. The honorees will be celebrated at the Woman of the Year Award Ceremony at the NCAA Convention in Phoenix in January.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Head Coach Stanley Redwine announced the 2023 cross country schedule today, July 17, which includes one home event and six other events across five states.

The Jayhawks will kick off the season by hosting the annual Bob Timmons Cross Country Classic, hosted at Rim Rock Farms on Sept. 2. Last fall, the Kansas men claimed a first-place finish, led by Chandler Gibbens who is entering his senior season. The women placed second as a team, but Lona Latema raced to the best time in the event.

Following the Bob Timmons Classic, KU will head north to Lincoln, Nebraska to compete in the Woody Greeno/Jay Dirksen Invitational on Sept. 16. &nbsp;Last year, the men earned a podium finish as a team, placing third.

Rounding out the month of September, Kansas will travel to Columbia, Missouri to race in the Gans Creek Classic on Sept. 29. Gibbens again paced the way for the Jayhawks, finishing in second with a time of 23:39.1.

Next, Kansas will take its longest trip of the season as it travels to Charlottesville, Virginia to compete in the Pre-Nationals Invite on Oct. 14. On Oct. 28, KU will compete in the highly competitive Big 12 Championship, being held in Ames, Iowa this year. Last season, the men placed fifth while the women placed eighth.

To wrap up the season, the team will compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Nov. 10 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, followed by the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18 in Charlottesville. The NCAA Midwest Regional Championships will serve as the qualifier for the NCAA Championships.

⚾ Jayhawk Collegiate League Standings and Scores

HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson Monarchs defeated the Haysville Aviators 11-5 on Sunday evening at Hobart-Detter Field to even the series up at a game apiece. 

The game saw a 1:40 minute weather delay after the first inning.

The Monarchs avenged a 11-1 run-rule defeat on Saturday by pounding out 13 hits in the six-run victory.

Hutchinson (12-14) broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run third inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from HutchCC product and Arkansas Razorback signee, Will Edmunson. The Monarchs never surrendered the lead again.

After Haysville (13-15) scored two in the fifth inning to pull within one, the Monarchs responded with two of their own to extend the lead back to three. The Monarchs added three in the seventh and one in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Monarchs had four players with a multi-hit game, led by Hogan Shelby's 3-for-4 night with three RBI. Max Buettenback (2-for-5), Jaden Gustafson (2-for-3) and Drew Bugner (2-for-4) all joined in with two hits each.&nbsp;

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has ended Novak Djokovic's 34-match winning streak at Wimbledon by beating him 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in an engaging, back-and-forth final to win his first championship at the All England Club. Alcaraz's victory gave him his second Grand Slam trophy overall. The No. 1-ranked Alcaraz prevented Djokovic from what would have been a record-tying eighth title, and fifth in a row, at the grass-court tournament. Djokovic also was kept from claiming his 24th career major. Alcaraz is a 20-year-old from Spain who became the third-youngest male champion at Wimbledon. WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Novak Djokovic lost on Centre Court at Wimbledon for the first time in 10 years and he has some regrets about it. There was that tiebreaker pretty early in the men's final when the 36-year-old Serb was one point from taking a two-sets-to-none lead over Carlos Alcaraz. And then there was that missed volley on break point early in the fifth set with all the momentum at that stage going the seven-time Wimbledon champion's way. Djokovic ended up losing 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in a high-energy and highly entertaining championship match. Djokovic says "I had my chances. I think I could have closed out that second-set tiebreaker better."

Titans landing 3-time All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins, AP source says

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans hope they've filled their major need at wide receiver with three-time All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. A person familiar with the agreement said Sunday the Titans have agreed on a two-year deal worth $26 million with incentives that could push that to $32 million. The Titans had the advantage of being the first NFL team Hopkins visited after his release by Arizona in May. The person confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Hopkins hasn't signed the contract. Hopkins would immediately boost a receiving group for a team whose head coach had more career NFL touchdown catches than anyone currently on the roster.

Stephen Curry makes hole-in-one, leads American Century celebrity golf tournament

STATELINE, Nev. (AP) — Stephen Curry, from way downtown! The Golden State Warriors star made a hole-in-one Saturday in the American Century Championship celebrity tournament. GULLANE, Scotland (AP) — Rory McIlroy finally is a winner in Scotland. McIlroy birdied the last two holes in whipping wind for a 68 to beat Robert MacIntyre by one shot in the Scottish Open. They delivered a great finish at The Renaissance Club. MacIntyre hit 3-wood from the rough on the 18th to 4 feet for birdie and a 64. McIlroy birdied the par-3 17th to catch him. And on the final hole, McIlroy hit 2-iron to 10 feet for birdie. The win gives McIlroy a boost going to the British Open next week at Royal Liverpool.

British Open has an old course with a new finish at Royal Liverpool

HOYLAKE, England (AP) — For an old course, Royal Liverpool offers a new finish. Players began arriving Sunday for the British Open. Only 38 players in the field were at Hoylake in 2014. And only nine players competed at Royal Liverpool in 2006 and 2014. The big change is at the end. The par-3 15th is now the longest par 5 in Open history. What used to be No. 15 is now the par-3 17th, except it goes in the opposite direction. Cameron Young did his best to take it all in after his long flight. He was runner-up last year at St. Andrews.

Linn Grant wins first LPGA title at Dana Open, beating Allisen Corpuz by 3 shots

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) — Linn Grant has won her first LPGA Tour title after an outstanding start to her career in Europe. The Swede endured a charge from U.S. Women's Open champion Allisen Corpuz and closed with a 3-under 68 for a three-shot victory in the Dana Open in Sylvania, Ohio. The 24-year-old Grant has five victories in Europe but didn't play in the United States until this year because she is not vaccinated against COVID-19. Grant took a six-shot lead into the final round and closed it out after Corpuz got within two on the back nine. She finished at 21-under 263 at Highland Meadows.

WICHITA, KS - Alex Isola hit an inside the park home run in extra innings to give the Wind Surge the come from behind win and their first walk-off win of the season. The Wind Surge defeated the Cardinals 13-12 in a game filled to the brim with offense.

The Wind Surge were the first to put a run on the board. In the bottom of the third DaShawn Keirsey Jr. hit a 415 foot two-out solo home run over the center field wall that gave the Surge the early lead.

Springfield jumped ahead in the top of the fourth. L.J. Jones hit an RBI single and then Victor Scott II hit a three RBI triple to give the Cardinals a three-run lead.

The Cardinals earned a couple more runs in the top of the fifth. Mike Antico and Jones both hit RBIs.

Wichita exploded offensively in the bottom of the fifth. Ernie Yake started things off with an automatic double and then Brooks Lee and Keirsey Jr. hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Severino hit an RBI single. The deficit was erased when Patrick Winkel hit a three-run home run to give the Surge the lead. Yake grounded out in his second at bat of the inning but was able to drive in a run. Lee hit his second RBI of the inning in his second at bat and ripped a ball off the right field wall for a single.

Nick Dunn and Antico both had RBI singles and Jones got his third and fourth RBIs of the game off a sharp ground ball to center field for a double and the lead back for Springfield in the top of the sixth.

Springfield added another run when Dunn got his third RBI of the game on a sharp ground ball to left field in the top of the seventh.

Lee hit a 406 foot two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the ball game back up for the Wind Surge.

The Cardinals were first to score in extra innings. Dunn hit his fourth RBI of the game off a fly ball to center field for a double.

The Wind Surge were able to get the victory after Alex Isola hit a walk-off inside the park home run in the bottom of the tenth.

Travis Adams got the start on the mound for the Wind Surge. He pitched three and two thirds innings where he gave up four runs off five hits. He also struck out three and walked two more.

The Cardinals started Edgar Escobar on the mound and he pitched a full four innings. He gave up six runs off nine hits, struck out one batter and walked one more.

The Wichita Wind Surge improve to (7-8, 35-48) and the Springfield Cardinals fall to (7-8, 41-43).

NOTES: Brooks Lee hit his league leading 29th double of the season. Alex Scherff’s streak of not allowing a run ended in extra innings today. His streak ended after not allowing a run in his last eight games and eleven innings.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr. homered and tripled with three RBIs, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4 on Sunday for their second win in 10 games.

In a game that sped by in 1 hour, 54 minutes, Brady Singer (6-8) won for the second time in seven starts since June 4. Singer allowed four runs and seven hits in a season-high eight innings as Kansas City improved to 27-67, the second-worst record in the major leagues and ahead of only Oakland.

He needed 70 pitches through seven innings and led 7-0 before Isaac Paredes hit a solo homer and Francisco Mejía hit a three-run drive for the AL-best Rays (60-36).

Zach Eflin (10-5) gave up a season-high five runs and seven hits over a season-low three innings, allowing hits to seven of his first 11 batters. The Rays had won three straight after a season-worst seven-game losing streak.

In a game that started one hour later because of rain, Royals All-Star catcher Salvador Perez left in the second inning after feeling left hamstring discomfort while scoring on Melendez’s double.

MJ Melendez hit a two-out RBI double in the first and the Royals opened a 5-0 lead in the second. Drew Waters hit an RBI triple and scored on Nick Pratto's single. Witt, who has an extra-base hit in six straight games, hit a two-run, two-out triple.

Drew Waters led off the fourth against Yonny Chirinos with a 465-foot home run to the uypper level of the right-field fountains.

Witt led off the fifth with his 16th and Melendez hit a solo homer in the eighth off Chirinos.

Royals RHP Collin Snider was optioned to Omaha and RHP Max Castillo was recalled from the Triple-A team.

Royals RHP Josh Staumont, placed on the 60-day IL on Saturday, is expected to have thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and miss the rest of the season.

Rays: LHP Shane McClanahan (11-1, 2.53) will return from a stint on the 15-day IL caused by a back injury to oppose Rangers RHP Dane Dunning (8-2, 2.84) in Texas on Monday.

⚾ Witt homers, triples and has 3 RBIs as Royals beat Rays

STATELINE, Nev. --&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/3975/stephen-curry">Stephen Curry</a>&nbsp;made an 18-foot putt for eagle on the final hole to win the American Century Championship on Sunday, his first title in the celebrity tournament.

Curry, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/team/_/name/gs/golden-state-warriors">Golden State Warriors</a>&nbsp;star who made a hole-in-one Saturday, topped it with his closing eagle on the par-5 18th hole at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course on the shores of Lake Tahoe. After the putt dropped, he tossed his hat into the air and ran into the arms of his wife, Ayesha.

"I don't do this for a living, so it's something you dream about," Curry said. "I've been playing in this tournament for almost a decade and now I've got some hardware to show for it. It's pretty special."

The eagle was good for six points under a version of the modified Stableford scoring system. Players receive three points for a birdie, one point for a par and minus-2 points for a double bogey or worse.

Curry finished with 75 points, two ahead of runner-up&nbsp;<a href="https://www.espn.com/sports/tennis/players/profile?playerId=358">Mardy Fish</a>, a former pro tennis player who won this event in 2020. Fish was three points ahead of Curry entering the 18th but made par.

Curry went viral for the second time this weekend following his ace on the 152-yard, par-3 seventh hole.

"I was hitting the ball pretty solid, so felt I would have a chance," Curry said. "On the putt, I was surprisingly calm. The last five feet felt like slow motion."

Fish pulled even with Curry with birdies on three of the first six holes. He moved into the lead when Curry bogeyed the 11th, 12th and 14th.

Under conventional scoring, Curry shot 72 on Sunday. Fish had the best round of the day, a 3-under 69.

Curry is the first Black winner of the tournament in its 34-year history. He becomes the fifth active athlete to win and the first since then-<a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/team/_/name/ten/tennessee-titans">Tennessee Titans</a>&nbsp;kicker Al del Greco in 2000. His first-place prize of $125,000 will be donated to charity because Curry is an amateur golfer.

Charles Barkley finished 81st in the 93-player field.

⛳ Steph Curry wins American Century Championship

HAYS – The West team forced a pair of first half turnovers and
then held on down the stretch as they claimed their fourth win in the last five
years over the East, 21-20 in the 50th Kansas Shrine Bowl Football
game Saturday at Lewis Field in Hays.

Both offenses were able to drive the field in their first possession
but eventually stalled in their opponent’s territory.

On the West second possession of the game they drove down
the field and scored on a one-yard touchdown run by Salina Central's Kenyon McMillian giving the
West a 7-0 lead after the extra point.

The East fumbled the ball inside the West 20 yard-line on their
next drive but the West was forced to punt.

On the East’s third possession Hays High's Evan Lind picked off a deflected pass and returned the ball to the
East 20 yard-line and on the next play Manhattan's Keenan Schartz found Circle's Ty Smith for a 20
yard touchdown putting the West up 14-0 after the PAT.

“I saw where the ball was going,” Lind said. “Riley (Marx)
was right in the lane, and it just bounced off his chest and I was right there.”

West Head Coach Tony Crough said Lind did the same thing
during the high school season last fall.

“Evan, I mean that's what he did,” Crough said. “He's just
kind of a ball magnet. You know he got his opportunity and went and took advantage
of it.”

The West forced one more turnover, a third quarter interception,
something Crough said they knew they were going to have to do.

“We knew we're gonna have to get some turnovers and
takeaways,” Crough said. “We knew that if they got the run game going that it
can be trouble.”

With the West leading 14-0 the East finally broke on to the
scoreboard with just over a minute left in the first half on an 11-yard
touchdown pass from St. Marys' Keller Hurla to Shawnee Mission Northwest's Malik O’Atis but the two-point attempt was
no good and the West took a 14-6 lead into halftime.

The third turnover of the game, an interception by the West’s
Jalen Rice (El Dorado) again, led to a short touchdown drive that was capped off by a
two-yard touchdown run by Schartz putting the West on top 21-6 with just over
three minutes to play in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter East quarterback Keller Hurla found tight end Luke
Niggeman from Girard on a two-yard touchdown pass with just less than nine minutes to play cutting
the West lead to 21-14 after the 2-point conversion. Then after a West punt, East running back Eric Bulter of Olathe Northwest capped off another long drive with a two-yard touchdown run making 21-20.


The East elected to go for two and the lead with just over
five minutes to play but Hurla’s pass was incomplete.

After the West turned the ball over on downs, near midfield,
with just over three minutes to play the East had chance to put together a
game-winning drive but the West defense held on downs to get the ball back and
second the win for the West.

Manhattan's Keenan Shartz was named the West MVP. He was 16-of-18
passing for 124 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown. 

St. Marys' Keller Hurla was the East MVP. He threw for 103 yards and
two touchdowns.

The West has won four of the last five Shrine Bowl games with
the 2022 game ending in a tie.

The 2024 Shrine Bowl will be played in Emporia.

🏈 West holds off late East rally for another Shrine Bowl victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luke Raley had a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 Saturday night to complete a doubleheader sweep.

Jose Siri hit a pair of solo homers as the Rays won the first game 6-1 to open the second half. AL East-leading Tampa Bay has won three in a row after a season-high, seven-game losing streak and at 60-35 became the first AL team to 60 wins.

Kansas City has lost eight of nine, dropping to 26-67 and falling 41 games under .500 for the first time since under 2019 at 59-103.. The Royals were swept in a doubleheader for the first time since May 25, 2019, against the New York Yankees after going 2-0-7 in their previous nine twinbills.

Dairon Blanco's RBI grounder in the fifth put the Royals ahead 2-1 in the nightcap. Josh Lowe tied the score with a run-scoring triple in the seventh and Raley singled in the eighth against Carlos Hernández (0-5). Harold Ramírez added a sacrifice fly in the ninth against Dylan Coleman.

Colin Poche (7-2) threw a 1-2-3 seventh. Pete Fairbanks, pitching before about 50 family and friends, worked around Salvador Perez's leadoff single in the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances.

Perez had four hits in the opener, one shy of his career high. His fifth-inning double made him the sixth Kansas City player with 500 extra-base hits.

Cole Ragans, a 25-year-old left-hander, made his Royals debut in the night game and allowed one run and four hits in five innings.

A day after the series opener was rained out, Tyler Glasnow (3-3) gave up one run and six hits over six innings and struck out six in the day game. Glasnow had been 0-3 in four starts since a June 14 win at Oakland.

“I felt good all game,” Glasnow said. “I kind of felt off to start, but as the innings went on I got a rhythm. It was a battle today and ended up being a good game.”

Siri homered in the third off Alec Marsh (0-3) and the ninth off Nick Wittgren for his seventh career multihomer game. Siri has 18 home runs this season.

“I know I've been striking out a lot, but everyone knows that. It felt good to connect on those two," Siri said.

Francisco Mejía gave the Rays a 2-0 lead in the fifth when he homered off Marsh, who allowed two runs and five hits in six innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk. The strikeouts were a high for a Royals pitcher in his first three big league starts.

“Getting strikeouts the last two games were difficult for me,” Marsh said. “I thought the attack mode was good all game. I think mindset wise I knew to keep attacking and knowing I needed to make a pitch with two strikes.”

Kansas City's Collin Snider opened the eighth with 13 consecutive balls. Raley followed with a two-run single and Josh Lowe hit a sacrifice fly.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a 424-foot homer in the fifth.

RHP Zach Eflin (10-4, 3.25) starts Sunday's series finale for the Rays and RHP Bailey Singer (5-8, 5.80) for the Royals.
