GREAT BEND – The high-scoring Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team relied on its defense Friday to earn head coach Tommy DeSalme a milestone victory.

Hutchinson's defense limited NOC-Enid to 35.6 percent shooting and only 28 points in the second half to open the Barton Classic to a 74-61 victory over the Jets at the Barton Gym.

The Blue Dragons (4-0) will play NOC-Tonkawa (3-2) at 3 p.m. on Saturday in Great Bend.

Friday's victory gave DeSalme his 50th coaching victory on the Blue Dragon bench.

Hutchinson led 39-33 at halftime and kept NOC-Enid at arm's length with a stingy defense. The Blue Dragons held NOC-Enid to 21 of 59 overall shooting and just 3 of 21 from distance. Hutchinson also forced 14 Jets' turnovers and held a 48-31 rebounding advantage.

Sophomore forward Dre Weathers scored a career-high 19 points on 9 of 13 shooting to lead the Blue Dragons. Weathers added seven rebounds.

The Blue Dragons shot 46.3 percent (31 of 67) from the field. Hutchinson was 2 of 17 from 3-point range and 10 of 13 from the free-throw line. The Dragons had to overcome 22 turnovers.

Sophomore JP Ricks scored 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting for Hutchinson. Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/bundy_kernan_hvu2">Kernan Bundy</a>&nbsp;came off the bench to score 10 points and grab eight rebounds.

<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;finished with nine points and eight rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;scored seven points.

Kole Scott scored a game-high 22 points, going 10 of 10 from the free-throw line to lead the Jets.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragon defense keeps Jets grounded

GREAT BEND – The Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team posted the ninth-largest margin of victory and head coach John Ontjes reached a milestone victory on Friday on the first day of the Barton Classic.

The Blue Dragons shot a season-high 51.8 percent and nailed a season-high nine 3-pointers while forcing a season's-best 30 turnovers in a 106-33 victory over Labette at the Barton Gym.

Hutchinson improved to 4-0 to start the season. The Blue Dragons will take on Redlands (4-1) at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Redlands lost to Barton on Friday night.

Hutchinson's 73-point margin of victory is the ninth largest in program history and the second largest in series history with Labette.

The Dragons scored 100 points in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2013-14 season when the accomplished that against Northwest Tech and Neosho County. The Blue Dragons hit 48 of 83 total shots, going 9 of 31 from 3-point range and 11 of 14 from the foul line.

Ontjes earned his 450th win on the Blue Dragon bench on Friday. His win total ranks second in both the KJCCC and Region VI to Cloud County's Brett Erkenbrack.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/denison_madie_a39r">Madi Denison</a>&nbsp;led a season-high six Blue Dragon in double figures against Labette with her first career double-double. Coming off the bench, Denison scored a career-high 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting. She tied a season high with 13 assists.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/duffy_monae_og8s">Monae Duffy</a>&nbsp;was a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. Duffy was 8 of 12 shooting from the field.

Freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/smith_kiki_x1vf">Kiki Smith</a>&nbsp;scored 16 points with two three-pointers. Smith added season highs of six assists and five steals.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/muggeridge_akaysha_rpaz">Akaysha Muggeridge</a>&nbsp;posted season highs of 14 points and 4 of 8 shooting from the 3-point line. Muggeridge had four steals, three assists and three rebounds.

The Blue Dragons led 22-7 after one quarter and 47-11 at halftime. The Dragons scored a season-high 36 points in the third quarter to lead 83-26 after three quarters.

The Blue Dragons (3-0) meets the NOC-Enid Jets (1-2) at 3 p.m. Friday at the Barton Gym. Hutchinson meets NOC-Tonkawa (3-1) at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Both games will be streamed on the Blue Dragon Sports Network at 2:45 each day. 

Sean Boston will have the call on KHUT-FM (102.9) on Friday and KWBW-AM/FM (1450/98.5) at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Hutchinson is off to a strong start with three victories to start the season. The Dragons shot a season-high 49.4 percent from the field on a 100-64 victory over the Allen Red Devils on Tuesday at the Sports Arena.

Through three games, the Blue Dragons are allowing 76.7 points per game and have forced 30 or more turnovers in three-straight games.

The Blue Dragons are closing in on milestone victory No. 1,900. Hutchinson, the all-time NJCAA men’s basketball leader in victories, is at 1,897 wins.

Fort Hays State vs. Arkansas Tech Saturday, November 11 - 5:45 p.m. Emporia, Kan. - White Auditorium

Fort Hays State Men's Basketball opens its 2023-24 regular season with a pair of games against opponents from the Great American Conference this Friday and Saturday in Emporia, Kan. The Tigers take on Southwestern Oklahoma State on Friday at 7:45 p.m., then Arkansas Tech on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.

This will be the fourth time out of the last five seasons that FHSU opens its season with Southwestern Oklahoma State and Arkansas Tech. Emporia State has done the same as ESU will be the last of the four schools to host the season-opening weekend among the four teams.&nbsp; FHSU has seen success against SWOSU and ATU during this gathering between the teams, going 5-1 since 2019. FHSU defeated both teams in Russellville, Arkansas (2019) and Hays (2021) before splitting in Weatherford, Oklahoma (2022). Last year FHSU fell to SWOSU in the season opener by three points, but bounced back for a nine-point win over Arkansas Tech.

Emporia has been a place of success for the Tigers. FHSU has won nine of its last 10 games played in White Auditorium, all of which were against Emporia State. FHSU has won its last two games in the facility.

The Tigers are coming off a 21-9 season in 2022-23. They went 15-7 in MIAA to tie for third place with Emporia State. The Tigers saw their season close in the MIAA Tournament semifinals against Central Oklahoma. Northwest Missouri State, Central Oklahoma, and Emporia State are all among the NABC Top 25 to start the 2023-24 season, while Fort Hays State is receiving votes.

Southwestern Oklahoma State is in its first season under head coach Brett Weiberg. He is a familiar name to the Tigers after serving as head coach of Missouri Western for five seasons from 2013 to 2018. The Bulldogs are coming off a 12-16 record in 2022-23. Ben Smith is their top returning scorer at 15.0 points per game.

Arkansas Tech was picked second in the Great American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The Wonder Boys went 16-15 overall last year. They are guided by Mark Downey, also a familiar name to the Tigers, after coaching Northeastern State for three seasons from 2017 to 2020. Taelon Peter is the top returning scorer for ATU at 15.5 points per game.

Kaleb Hammeke&nbsp;is the top returning scorer for the Tigers at 16.4 points per game. An All-MIAA First Team and NABC All-District Second Team selection for the Central Region as season ago, Hammeke also led the Tigers in assists at 3.6 per game, while shooting 81.2 percent from the free-throw line. Returning all-conference performers joining Hammeke are Elijah Nnanabu and Bjarni Jonsson, who each earned honorable mention selections last year. Jonsson was named to the conference's All-Defensive Team for a second straight year as well. Six newcomers join eight returners (six that played last year) to make up FHSU's 14-man roster.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The 3-0 Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball teams play its final preps before conference play opens in one week this weekend with neutral site games on Friday and Saturday at the Barton Classic in Great Bend.

The Blue Dragons play Redlands (0-3) at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Barton Gym and Redlands (4-0) at 1 p.m on Saturday. He left the field in the third quarter of Texas’ 31-24 win at Houston on Oct. 21. Second-year freshman Maalik Murphy has started the last two games in his place and led Texas to a pair of victories.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma believes it still has plenty to play for, despite dropping out of first place in the Big 12 and likely falling out of the race for a College Football Playoff berth. The 17th-ranked Sooners sit one game behind co-leaders Oklahoma State and Texas in the league standings heading into a game against West Virginia with three games left. The Sooners will need to beat a West Virginia team that has just as much to play for. The Mountaineers also are one game out of the Big 12 lead after being picked to finish last in the preseason media poll.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The universal designated hitter has been part of Major League Baseball for two full seasons and, much to the chagrin of some National League traditionalists, the sport has survived and even thrived. In a somewhat surprising development, though, many teams are struggling to get much production from that spot. The next generation of big-bopping DHs like David Ortiz, Edgar Martinez and Frank Thomas hasn’t materialized, with just three players logging at least 110 games at designated hitter during the 2023 season. OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A devoted group of Bay Area baseball fans are sending “Stay In Oakland” boxes to 15 Major League Baseball team owners, imploring them to vote no on the team's planned relocation to Las Vegas. The group is targetting owners who could be swayed to vote against the proposed move during annual league meetings next week. The list includes Boston's John Henry and the New York Yankees' Hal Steinbrenner. The boxes contain green A's caps, baseball cards featuring the owners' likenesses and a note detailing why they should vote against Las Vegas.

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) — Alex Noren has been working hard on his wedge game and Bermuda was the ideal spot for that. Port Royal had no wind and Noren had no problem. He set the tournament record with 11 birdies. It gave him a 61 for a two-shot lead in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. That's his best PGA Tour round by two shots. Adam Long had a 66 and earned a spot in the record book. He hit his first 11 fairways. That gave him 69 in a row dating to Las Vegas to set the PGA Tour record.

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;Wichita State gave up 22 offensive rebounds and committed 19 turnovers, but found a way to defeat WKU, 71-61, Thursday night in Charles Koch Arena.

Wichita State (2-0) was able to overcome an up-and-down game in large part to WKU going 0-for-21 from beyond the arc. It marked the first time an opponent failed to connect on a three-pointer since Loyola Marymount went 0-for-5 on Dec. 22, 2014.

On a night when the Shockers played only seven guys, four of those seven finished in double figures, led by&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/kenny-pohto/7584">Kenny Pohto</a>&nbsp;with 16. Pohto pulled down 11 rebounds to go with 16 points for his first double-double of the season and third career.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/7579">Xavier Bell</a>&nbsp;was 8-for-10 from the free throw line, finishing with a career-high tying 14 points.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/harlond-beverly/7587">Harlond Beverly</a>&nbsp;scored all 13 of his points in the second half to go with five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

Wichita State shot 48.1 percent from the floor behind another relatively quiet night from three-point range (4-for-13).A back-and-forth first half saw Wichita State go into halftime trailing, 29-27, but immediately came out on a 7-0 run, forcing a WKU timeout just 2:28 into the half.

Near the 12:00 minute mark, WKU cut the Shockers' lead to 44-40 only to see Wichita State mount an 11-3 run. The margin would stay in double digits over the next 7:00 minutes until back-to-back scores pulled the Hilltoppers within six, 56-50.Five straight points from Beverly immediately made it a 10-point game again.

One last push from WKU in the final 1:30 had the Hilltoppers within six, but a layup and two free throws from Ridgnal essentially put the game away.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas women’s basketball team set a new single-game school record with 16 made three-pointers in an 88-46 rout over Northwestern State on Wednesday evening at Allen Fieldhouse.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks start the season 1-0 for the seventh-straight season with the win, while sending Northwestern State to 0-2 on the year.

"We feel great about the opportunity to wear Kansas across our chest, and we are always going to strive to represent our school, our community, and our state in the way that would hopefully make those folks proud," head coach Brandon Schneider said.

Wyvette Mayberry opened the scoring with a three-pointer on KU’s first possession and the Jayhawks used a 13-0 run to take a 17-3 lead before the first media timeout. Kansas closed the quarter on a 13-3 run and led 30-9 at the end of the first quarter.&nbsp;

Scoring was back and forth early in the second quarter before the Jayhawks used a 10-0 run to lead 49-19 with 3:29 to play in the half before taking a lead of 50-23 into the break. The Jayhawks hit 10 three-pointers in the first half, led by three from Holly Kersgieter and two apiece from Mayberry, S’Mya Nichols and Zakiyah Franklin.

The Jayhawks would continue the hot shooting in the second half, hitting four threes in the third quarter to tie the previous school record at 14, which was set against Baylor in 2019. Kersgieter put the Jayhawks over the record with 6:37 to play in the fourth before Mayberry followed with her fourth three of the night to make it 81-43 with 4:12 to play.

On that basket, Mayberry surpassed 1,000 career points scored and she went on to finish with&nbsp; 17 points, matching Kersgieter for the team lead. Mayberry joins Kersgieter and Franklin by becoming the third active Jayhawk to hit the 1,000-point milestone.&nbsp;

Kersgieter also reached a milestone as she surpassed Charisse Sampson for 10th place on KU’s career scoring list. With 17 points against NSU, Kersgieter has now scored 1,576 points as a Jayhawk.&nbsp;

Taiyanna Jackson recorded her 28th career double-double, which is tied for the fourth-most in school history, while Franklin set a new Kansas career record for minutes played after logging 25 minutes of action. She has played in 3,979 minutes in a Kansas uniform, surpassing the previous record of 3,960 held by Kylee Kopatich.

Next Up The Jayhawks will be back in action on Monday, November 13, in University Park, Pennsylvania, on the road against Big Ten opponent Penn State. That game will tip off at 5 p.m. CT and be televised on B1G Network.&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Wildcats set a single-season program record Wednesday night with its fifth victory over a ranked opponent this year, as K-State downed the No. 3 Texas Longhorns in straight sets at Morgan Family Arena, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.

In front of its fifth sold out crowd of 3,044, K-State (14-10, 8-7 Big 12) registered its fourth straight victory over a ranked opponent at home with the program's first win over UT since 2003, snapping a 39-match losing streak. &nbsp;

The Wildcats handed the reigning national champions their first Big 12 loss of the season, while K-State also became just the second team this season to sweep the Longhorns (18-4, 13-1 Big 12) alongside then ranked-No. 2 Stanford (Sept. 2).

The five Top 25 victories eclipsed the previous mark of four set in 1999, then again in 2000. K-State has now won a program record 12 straight sets at home against ranked foes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/aliyah-carter/11044">Aliyah Carter</a>&nbsp;led a tremendous all-around effort by the Wildcats, who had a .351 efficiency (45 kills, 11 errors). A senior from Dubuque, Iowa, Carter submitted her 17th&nbsp;career match with 20 or more kills, registering a match-high 20 kills with just six errors for a .311 hitting efficiency.

Carter's 20 kills ties fifth in the rally-scoring era for total kills in a single three-set match, marking the program's first 20-kill three-set match since her 23 kills against Wayne State in 2021.

The 71-year-old Washington becomes the majors' oldest current manager and only the second active Black manager, joining the Dodgers' Dave Roberts. Washington led the Texas Rangers from 2007-14, winning two AL pennants and going 664–611. Reggie Jackson, filling in for an injured Jamal Murray, added 20 points to help the defending champion Nuggets improve to an NBA-best 8-1 overall and 6-0 at home. Michael Porter Jr. scored 17 points for Denver, and Aaron Gordon added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Stephen Curry, fresh off winning the Western Conference player of the week award, was hounded all night, mostly by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and finished with 23 points for Golden State. Klay Thompson had 15.

Wembanyama has a rough debut at Madison Square Garden as the Knicks rout the Spurs 126-105

If there was one question that could produce some universally awkward moments, it was anything about the slowly developing Ohtani sweepstakes, which could cost the winning team $500 million or more. Ohtani is one of the most fascinating cases for baseball's free agency system ever. He's 29 years old and just produced one of the best two-way seasons in MLB history, batting .304 with 44 homers while also having a 10-5 record on the mound with a 3.14 ERA.

Bryce Harper to play first base full-time for Phillies as franchise moves on from Rhys Hoskins

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies have decided that Bryce Harper is the team's first baseman of the future, which means the franchise is also moving on from slugger Rhys Hoskins. An NCAA review has concluded that the officiating in the national championship game between LSU and Iowa fell short of expectations. The review was pushed up to this summer after criticism about the calls in the game. LSU beat Iowa for its first national title. NCAA vice president for women's basketball Lynn Holzman says officials were graded on the accuracy of their calls and the overall number was lower than it should have been. She says work will be done to improve.

The NFL's youth movement at quarterback reaches a new milestone

The generational shift at quarterback in the NFL reached a new milestone last week. For the first time ever, every player who threw a pass in the NFL in Week 9 was born in 1990 or later, with 15 of the 28 starting quarterbacks last week age 25 or younger. This was the first time since Week 6 of the 2002 season that no quarterback born in the 1980s took the field. There were seven rookie starters last week, raising the total of rookie starting QBs this season to nine, tying the non-replacement record set in 2019.

General Motors tells AP it is only interested in entering Formula One with Andretti Global

General Motors will not break its partnership with Andretti Global to enter Formula One and is not interested in considering other teams to partner with to gain entry to the global motorsports series. The automaker told The Associated Press on Wednesday is committed with bringing the Cadillac brand to F1 with Andretti. The FIA last month approved the Andretti application for expansion of the F1 grid, but the decision now rests with F1 and its commercial rights holder and Andretti has not gained any traction. The AP reported last month that F1 had asked General Motors to consider partnering with another team.

Michigan star Corum says he had no business with Stalions, unaware of online records in his name

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan All-American Blake Corum says he has no business relationship with Connor Stalions, the former Wolverines staffer at the center of an NCAA sign-stealing investigation into the program, and he was unaware of documents filed for a company with his name on them. Wyoming Secretary of State online records show Stalions, Corum and another person listed as organizers for BC2 Housing LLC. The initial filing was made March 28, 2022, and the address listed for the business was in Ann Arbor. Corum was asked Tuesday by reporters about his name being listed on the records. He said the first he had heard of it was a few hours earlier.

WICHITA, Kan. –&nbsp;The Shockers blew past Presbyterian 60-41 in their home opener, giving first-year head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/terry-nooner/1136">Terry Nooner</a>&nbsp;his first win as a head coach Wednesday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.

"I'm happy to get my first win of my career," Nooner said. "It was a great experience. It's been a lot of hard work, and it's just a testament to our team We did a good job of following a great game plan with only one day of prep."

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/tre-zure-jobe/7624">Tre'Zure Jobe</a>&nbsp;led the Shockers (1-1) in scoring with 13 points, followed by&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/daniela-abies/7503">Daniela Abies</a>&nbsp;with 12 points and 5 rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jayla-murray/7622">Jayla Murray</a>&nbsp;put up eight points and eight rebounds in her second Division I game, and freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/salese-blow/7620">Salese Blow</a>&nbsp;scored nine points for the second-consecutive game.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/jeniah-thompson/7512">Jeniah Thompson</a>&nbsp;snagged a game-high nine boards, and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/dj-mccarty/7509">DJ McCarty</a>&nbsp;recorded a game-high three steals.

Presbyterian (0-2) gained a 6-2 advantage to start the game, but the Shockers responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead and never relinquish it again.

Jobe scored six of her 13 points in the first quarter before Blow helped the Shockers go on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter.

Wichita State outscored Presbyterian 19-8 in the second quarter to go into halftime up 14.The Shockers had 24 rebounds in the first half, just five less than the entirety of game one against Oklahoma.

Abies started heating up on offense coming out of the break, scoring 10 second-half points.

The Shocker defense held PC's Aubrie Kierscht, the leading scorer against Kansas State to just two points as Christina Kline stepped up for the Blue Hose with a team-high 11 points.

Wichita State committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 17 Blue Hose turnovers.

Both teams struggled from behind the arc, going just 4-for-40 combined (10%).

After throwing for four touchdowns in a conference-championship-clinching victory over Independence, Hutchinson Community College quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/collier_samari_cpv0">Samari Collier</a>&nbsp;was named the NJCAA National Offensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

One day earlier, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore, was named the Jayhawk Conference's Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Saturday's game at Independence was the second time this season that Collier has thrown for four touchdown passes.

Collier threw for career highs of 236 yards on four touchdowns to pace a Blue Dragon offense that racked up 346 total yards.

Collier connected with Oran Singleton for a 66-yard catch and run for a touchdown to opening the scoring with 5:44 to play in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. One play after a&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/jones_nylen_05hn">Nylen Jones</a>&nbsp;interception, Collier hit&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2023-24/bios/beason_zerah_m1gv">Zeriah Beason</a>&nbsp;in stride for a 70-yard touchdown strike for a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;— The Kansas City Royals announced their 2023 team award winners today, which were voted on by the Kansas City chapter of the BBWAA.&nbsp;Bobby Witt Jr.&nbsp;was unanimously named the Les Milgram Player of the Year and left hander&nbsp;Cole Ragans&nbsp;was named the Bruce Rice Pitcher of the Year.&nbsp;Maikel Garcia&nbsp;earned the Joe Burke Special Achievement Award.

Among American League leaders in 2023, he ranked 2nd in stolen bases (49), 3rd in hits (177), tied for 3rd in total bases (317), tied for 7th in runs (97), 8th in extra-base hits (69) and tied for 9th in batting average (.276).He became the first player in Royals history to record a 30-homer, 30-steal season, and he was just the seventh player in Major League history to go 30/30 in his age-23 season or younger. Only four players in Major League history matched his combination of 30 home runs and 49 stolen bases in a season, including&nbsp;Eric Davis&nbsp;(1987),&nbsp;Barry Bonds&nbsp;(1990),&nbsp;Mike Trout&nbsp;(2012) and&nbsp;Ronald Acuña Jr.&nbsp;(2023).Witt Jr. led the Majors with 11 triples, which marked the most by a Royal since&nbsp;Carlos Beltrán&nbsp;had 12 triples in 2001. He became the sixth American League player in the last 75 years with at least 30 home runs and 10 triples in a season, following&nbsp;Joe DiMaggio&nbsp;(1950),&nbsp;Mickey Mantle&nbsp;(1955),&nbsp;Jim Rice&nbsp;(1977 and 1978),&nbsp;Nomar Garciaparra&nbsp;(1997) and&nbsp;Curtis Granderson&nbsp;(2011). Witt Jr. became just the fourth player with 30 homers, 30 steals and 10 triples in a season, following&nbsp;Ken Williams&nbsp;(1922),&nbsp;Willie Mays&nbsp;(1957) and&nbsp;Jimmy Rollins&nbsp;(2007).Ragans, 25, emerged as Kansas City’s ace after being acquired from Texas on June 30 in a three-player trade that sent&nbsp;Aroldis Chapman&nbsp;to the Rangers. Over 12 starts with the Royals, Ragans went 5-2 and posted a 2.64 ERA (21 ER in 71.2 IP) with 89 strikeouts (11.2 K/9). From Aug. 1 through season’s end, he ranked 1st in the American League in strikeouts (86) and K/9 (11.6), 2nd in K% (32.3%), 4th in opponents’ OPS (.543) and 6th with a 2.70 ERA (20 ER in 66.2 IP). He produced a 2.3 fWAR during that two-month stretch, which led all Major League pitchers, ahead of&nbsp;Tarik Skubal&nbsp;(2.2),&nbsp;Spencer Strider&nbsp;(2.1) and&nbsp;Logan Webb&nbsp;(2.1).Ragans was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for August, becoming the first Royals pitcher to win AL monthly honors since&nbsp;Zack Greinke&nbsp;in April 2009, the year he won the&nbsp;Cy Young&nbsp;Award. Ragans went 3-1 in 6 August starts with a Majors-best 1.72 ERA (7 ER in 36.2 IP) and 53 strikeouts, which were the 2nd most for any month in club history, trailing Royals Hall of Famer&nbsp;Dennis Leonard, who had 55 strikeouts in 59.1 innings in June 1977, the year he set the club’s single-season strikeout record (244).Garcia, 23, opened the season with Triple-A Omaha before being recalled on May 2, after which he spent the remainder of the year with the Royals. Despite playing in just 123 games, he ranked among qualified American League rookies in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (3rd, .272), triples (T-3rd, 4), hits (4th, 126), stolen bases (4th, 23), walks (6th, 38), total bases (7th, 166), RBI (8th, 50), on-base percentage (9th, .323) and doubles (T-10th, 20).Garcia ranked 2nd among all third basemen with 13 Outs Above Average (according to&nbsp;Baseball Savant), behind only&nbsp;Ke’Bryan Hayes&nbsp;(17). He ranked tied for 8th in the Majors&nbsp;at any position&nbsp;with 15 Outs Above Average, trailing leader&nbsp;Dansby Swanson&nbsp;(20).
