HUTCHINSON, Kan.&nbsp;— The Hutchinson High School Salthawks football team got off to a quick start and never looked back, cruising to a 57-14 win over the Salina South Cougars on Homecoming at Gowans Stadium.

Hutchinson (3-2) junior Terrell King got things started, taking the opening kickoff back 86 yards for a touchdown to give the Salthawks a 7-0 lead eight seconds in.

The Salthawks scored quickly throughout the night, needing only one-play scoring drives on three different occasions.&nbsp;

Hutchinson finished the game with 359 yards of total offense, 288 of those on the ground. Senior Zion Burgess led the ground game with 11 carries for 138 yards and two touchdowns of 61 yards and seven yards. Four different Salthawks scored rushing touchdowns (Burgess 2, Smith 1, Gaitho-Karanu 1, Hunter 1).&nbsp;

The Salthawks led 14-0 after one quarter, 35-7 at halftime, and 50-7 after three quarters.

Salthawk head coach Mike Vernon was able to use several of his reserves for a majority of the second half.

Sophomore Tayton Tuchardt led the defense with seven tackles and a tackle for loss. Senior Mason Jones finished with six tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks.&nbsp;

The Hutchinson defense limited the Salina South offense to zero yards of offense in the first quarter, while really taking away the Cougars rushing attempts. Salina South finished with 37 carries for 72 yards after running the ball 21 times for negative-5 yards in the first half.

The Salthawks travel to Haysville on Friday to play the Campus Colts. Campus (1-4) fell to Derby, 48-0 on Friday. The Cougars return to Salina District Stadium to host Newton (2-3).

🏈 Salthawks tame Cougars to claim Homecoming win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Every batter Kansas City sent up against Carlos Rodón scored, resulting in a nine-run first inning, and Bobby Witt Jr. added a two-run homer to become the first Royals player in the 30-30 club during a 12-5 rout of the New York Yankees that opened their season-ending three-game series Friday night.

Witt reached base three times and drove in three runs, and his homer in the seventh gave him 30 to go with 49 stolen bases. He needs one more steal to join Eric Davis, Barry Bonds and Ronald Acuña Jr. as the only players in the 30-50 club.

All eight batters Rodón (3-8) faced scored, tying the most runs allowed in a start without getting an out since at least 1901. He permitted six hits and two walks before Yankees manager Aaron Boone mercifully pulled him from the game.

The Royals wound up putting their first 10 batters on base — the first nine scored — to set a franchise record.

Jordan Lyles (6-17) took advantage of the immense run support to earn his second straight win. The right-hander got through six shaky innings, allowing five runs on four hits and a walk while striking out four.

Austin Wells hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs for the Yankees.

The Royals (55-105) need to sweep the three-game set to avoid equaling the 2005 team that lost 106 times for the most in franchise history. The Yankees (81-79) need to win one of the last two to ensure their 31st consecutive winning season.

The miserable first year of Rodón's six-year, $162 million contract came to a fitting conclusion. In 35 pitches without recording an out, Rodón allowed four singles, two walks, a double and Edward Oliveras' no-doubt shot into the New York bullpen.

Not even a visit from Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake could stop the damage.

It was the most batters faced without recording an out by a starter since Steven Matz faced eight for the Mets in 2019, and the 10 consecutive hitters that reached base were the most to start a game against the Yankees since the Cleveland Indians had that many reach against Catfish Hunter and Bob Kammeyer on July 27, 1978.

Rodón began the year on the injured list with a strained forearm and then dealt with a back injury that slowed his return. He didn't make his Yankees debut until July 7, and then lost four of his first five starts. Not even a reasonably respectable last month for the two-time All-Star could salvage his ERA, which plummeted to 6.85 with Friday night's effort. New York went 3-11 in his 2023 starts.

The Royals kept rolling against reliever Matt Bowman, too. Their first out scored another run on Witt's sacrifice fly, and their second was a productive fielder's choice by Oliveras that moved up the runners. Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez, who had three RBIs, each had two hits in the first inning, which ended on a questionable called third strike against Nelson Velázquez.

The Yankees trimmed their 10-run deficit in half by the sixth, but Witt's homer in the seventh put the game away.

Yankees: RHP Keynan Middleton (shoulder inflammation) was activated from the injured list and RHP Yoendrys Gómez was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Middleton served up Witt's home run.

Yankees RHP Frankie Montas (shoulder inflammation) arrived in Kansas City and could pitch before the end of the weekend. He had surgery on his labrum Feb. 21 in Los Angeles, an injury that had limited him after last season's trade from Oakland to the Yankees. He began a Triple-A rehab assignment on Sept. 17 and pitched two scoreless innings last Saturday.

“He didn't have to fight his way to get back for the finish,” Boone said. “He's put himself in a position to be healthy and ready. He is continuing to get after it, right? To be in a position that he is. So we certainly respect that.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Two top-25 teams will square off in Austin, Texas this weekend as No. 24 Kansas travels to Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 30 to take on No. 3 Texas.

The game will be nationally televised on ABC at 2:30 p.m. CT with Sean McDonough (play-by-play), Greg McElroy (analyst) and Molly McGrath (sideline) on the call for the Jayhawks’ first appearance on ABC since 2019.

With both teams 4-0, it will be the first time that the two teams have faced off while both are ranked. The Kansas-Texas matchup will be the 22nd in program history, with Texas owning the series advantage at 17-4, including a 9-1 advantage in Austin. Kansas won its first game in Austin in program history in 2021, in an overtime thriller that resulted in a Jared Casey 2-point conversion to win, 57-56.

The Jayhawks are 4-0 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1914-15. Last week, Kansas outlasted BYU in its Big 12 Conference opener, 38-27, behind two defensive touchdowns from Cobee Bryant (fumble return) and Kenny Logan Jr. (interception return). Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels threw three touchdown passes as the Jayhawks won their Big 12 opener in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2008-09.

Kansas enters Saturday’s game ranking first nationally in third-down conversion rate (60.5%), while averaging 37.8 points per game. Kansas’ two defensive touchdowns are tied for the third most nationally while their 35 tackles-for-loss is the eighth most in the country.

Texas returns home ranked No. 3 in the AP Poll, after defeating Baylor 38-6 in Waco on Saturday, Sept. 23. The Longhorns are averaging 35.0 points per game while allowing just 12.5. The Longhorns enter Saturday’s game following victories over Baylor (Sept. 23, 38-6), Wyoming (Sept. 16, 31-10), No. 3 Alabama (Sept. 9, 34-24) and Rice (Sept. 2, 37-10).

The Longhorns are led by second year quarterback Quinn Ewers, who has thrown for 1,033 yards and nine touchdowns on 72-of-112 passing. Texas’ defense is guided by Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year Jaylan Ford, who leads the team with 25 tackles and two interceptions.

Following Kansas’ road test at Texas, the Jayhawks will return home to host UCF on Saturday, Oct. 7. The game will feature two Jayhawks being inducted into the Ring of Honor, as Nick Reid and Tony Sands earn the highest honor bestowed upon Kansas football letterwinners.

The NFL didn’t need a popularity boost before Travis Kelce became enchanted with Taylor Swift.

They’ll gladly welcome millions of Swifties to watch this love story unfold.

The biggest news that came out of Week 3 wasn’t Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins lighting up the scoreboard against Denver with only the fourth 70-point performance in NFL history.

It wasn’t Arizona shocking Dallas, Houston upsetting Jacksonville or Matt Gay kicking four 50-yard field goals to help Indianapolis knock off Baltimore.

Instead,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-kelce-chiefs-891e7df84295f5b35cfa97a5ec427721">Swift stole the headlines</a>&nbsp;by simply showing up at Arrowhead Stadium to watch Kelce and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs destroy the woeful Chicago Bears. The pop star joined Donna Kelce in a suite and mesmerized the world with her high-fiving, glass-pounding, chest-bumping enthusiasm.

Swift then left the stadium with Kelce and accompanied the four-time All-Pro tight end to an after-party with his teammates.

Two-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes was impressed.

“She was really cool. Good people,” Mahomes said.

Andy Reid joked that he played matchmaker.

“I set them up. She’s tremendous at everything she does. I haven’t got to meet her, but if she ends up with Travis, I’ll probably get to meet her,” Reid said.

Even Bill Belichick shared his thoughts on America’s newest power couple.

“Well, I would say that Travis Kelce’s had a lot of big catches in his career. This would be the biggest,” Belichick said in a radio interview on WEEI in Boston.

There’s no shaking off the Swift-Kelce buzz if the NFL’s grumpiest coach is dropping lines about their possible relationship.

Kelce’s No. 87&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/taylor-swift-travis-kelce-jersey-nfl-d6fc6756069e0c2dc12c0af747941414">jersey sales skyrocketed</a>&nbsp;this week, spiking 400%. Television ratings for the Bears-Chiefs game soared despite the lopsided score. A total of 24.3 million viewers tuned in, making it the second-most watched game this season.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban took notice.

“Like literally, she impacts economies when she brings her tour to a city,” Cuban said on ESPN’s First Take. “She is literally the most popular artist on the planet right now, not even close. So what I’m going to tell ya, Taylor, if you are listening, sorry Travis, break up with him. I got a bunch of good looking, single guys that play for the Dallas Mavericks. I gotchu, I gotchu.”

Kelce responded on X, formerly known as Twitter, telling Cuban to sign him to a 10-day contract.

Kelce, who joked about paparazzi staking out his house, has had plenty of fun in the spotlight but he plans to keep things quiet going forward.

“What’s real is that it is my personal life. I want to respect both of our lives,” he told his brother, Eagles All-Pro center Jason Kelce, on the “&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/kansas-city-chiefs-chicago-bears-nfl-football-missouri-kansas-city-71d9947b11ce4110b15eb93f2aea739b">New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce” podcast</a>.

But, two is better than one. So, Swift is reportedly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-jets-preview-ce81e22c5acd589a692f6d4b08efd5ab">heading to MetLife Stadium</a>&nbsp;to see Kelce and the Chiefs take on the Aaron Rodgers-less New York Jets on Sunday Night Football.

That’s another big win for the NFL since it’ll be difficult for the Jets to keep up with the high-flying Chiefs if Zach Wilson is still their quarterback. He should be since the team only signed Trevor Siemian this week. If the score gets out of control, expect the Swifties to stick with the NBC broadcast to see when the television cameras pan to the 12-time Grammy Award winner.

Betting sites are offering odds on how much face time Swift gets during the game, what color she will wear, which broadcaster says her name first, who she’ll sit with and much more.

Nobody reaps the benefit of this relationship more than the NFL, which already was doing just fine before Swift crashed the stadium and brought her 367 million followers on Instagram and X to the party.

The attention exceeds even the league’s wildest dreams.

Orioles clinch the AL East title with their 100th win of the season, 2-0 over Red Sox

BALTIMORE (AP) — Anthony Santander homered in the first, DL Hall worked out of a sixth-inning jam and the Baltimore Orioles clinched the AL East title with a 2-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Dean Kremer allowed two hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight, and the Orioles reached 100 wins for the sixth time in team history and first since 1980. Now the Orioles will enter the postseason as the top seed in the American League. The team also announced on the scoreboard after the third inning that it had reached an agreement with the state keeping the Orioles in Baltimore for at least the next 30 years.

David Montgomery runs wild as Lions beat Packers 34-20 to take early command of NFC North

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — David Montgomery rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns, and the Detroit Lions asserted themselves as the team to beat in the NFC North, beating the Green Bay Packers 34-20. Montgomery carried the ball 32 times. He became the first Lion to rush for three touchdowns at Green Bay and the first Detroit player to top 100 yards rushing with three TDs since James Stewart in 2000. The Lions beat the Packers for the fourth straight time, a streak that includes the final game of last season. Jordan Love threw for a touchdown and ran for another for the Packers.

Analysis: Adrian Griffin, as he enters Year 1 as a coach, is the winner of the Lillard trade

The Milwaukee Bucks were winners of the Damian Lillard trade sweepstakes, obviously, because they got him. Damian Lillard was a winner of the sweepstakes, also obviously, because now he gets a chance to really contend for an NBA title, even if he didn't get sent to Miami like he preferred. Lillard and the Bucks were not the biggest winners, however. That title goes to Adrian Griffin, who is about to officially start Year 1 as a head coach.

Travis Hunter, Colorado State safety whose hit landed him in hospital, make peace by going bowling

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Colorado two-way standout Travis Hunter and the Colorado State safety whose late hit landed him in the hospital showed there are no hard feelings by going bowling. Hunter and defensive back Henry Blackburn went to a bowling alley in the Boulder area on Wednesday to roll a few frames. Hunter was running a deep route in the first quarter of a game on Sept. 16 when he was hit by Blackburn shortly after the ball sailed over his head. Hunter returned to the game but later left to go to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a lacerated liver. Hunter missed last weekend's 42-6 loss at Oregon.

Red Sox say Tim Wakefield is in treatment, asks for privacy after illness outed by Schilling

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox say announcer and former knuckleballer Tim Wakefield is undergoing treatment for a disease they did not specify and asked for fans to respect his privacy after his illness was outed without his consent by ex-teammate Curt Schilling. The team issued a statement on Thursday after Schilling said on a podcast that Wakefield had brain cancer. The news led to an outpouring of support for Wakefield – and criticism of Schilling. Wakefield is 57. He retired in 2012 with a 200-192 record and 4.41 ERA in more than 3,000 major league innings. He was a part of Boston's 2004 and '07 World Series championships and was inducted into the team's Hall of Fame in 2016.

Court hearing set for Nov. 14 as Oregon State, Washington State fight for control of Pac-12

A hearing has been set for Nov. 14 in Oregon State and Washington State's legal fight with the Pac-12 and its departing members to govern the conference and control its assets. The preliminary injunction hearing will be held in Washington Superior Court in Whitman County. A judge in that same court granted a temporary restraining order to the two schools earlier this month that blocked a board of directors meeting with Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff and university leaders from schools that have announced plans to leave the league.

DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit his 511th home run as Detroit won the completion of a suspended game 8-0 and Spencer Torkelson hit a three-run homer in a seven-run seventh inning that led the Tigers over the Kansas City Royals 7-3 Thursday for a sweep both games.

Cabrera, who is retiring after the season, tied Mel Ott for 25th on the career home run list. The 40-year-old has 373 homers for Detroit, tying Norm Cash for second behind Al Kaline’s 399.

Cabrera did not play in the regularly scheduled game but intends to appear in the season’s final three games this weekend against Cleveland.

At 54-105, the Royals have their most losses since 2005.

Cole Ragans (5-2) led 3-0 after 6 1/3 innings in the second game before Parker Meadows hit an RBI single and Matt Vierling tied the score with a two-run single off Carlos Hernández.

“He said he didn’t feel right mechanically all day,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. ” That’s the kind of thing he has to be able to overcome.”

Andy Ibañez singled for a 4-3 lead and Torkelson became the first Detroit player with 30 homers since Cabrera had 38 and Justin Upton 31 in 2016.

“It feels great, especially because my teammates were so happy for me,” Torkelson said. “I wouldn’t have even gotten that chance if they hadn’t put together so many great at-bats in that inning.”

José Cisnero (3-4-0) pitched a scoreless seventh.

Play was suspended because of rain after four innings and an 80-minute wait on Wednesday night.

Miguel Díaz (1-0) pitched two innings for the win. Kansas City was held to four hits for the 25th time this season.

Cabrera homered leading off the second against Jonathan Bowlan (0-1), a 26-year-old right-hander who allowed one run and three hits over two innings in his major league debut.

Cabrera’s homer, his fourth this season, would have hit the out-of-town scoreboard before this season’s renovations lowered the fence in right-centerfield.

“It’s meaningful, because he wants to win games,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “Is it his last homer? I don’t know, but that was vintage Miggy. That’s how he hits.”

Cabrera singled in the fourth for his 3,170th hit, took second on Ibañez’s double, and scored on pinch-hitter Tyler Nevin’s three-run homer.

Detroit added two runs in the fifth on Cabrera’s bases-loaded walk and Ibañez’s RBI forceout.

Jake Rogers hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Jackson Kowar.

Parker Meadows made a leaping catch at the center-field wall for the final out, denying Nelson Velazquez .

Most of the completion was played in light showers, but rain grew heavier during the fourth inning. Crew chief Marvin Hudson called for the tarp after a lengthy attempt to get the field playable to start the fifth.

Royals: RHP Jordan Lyles (5-17, 6.24) starts Friday’s series opener against the visiting New York Yankees, who go with LHP Carlos Rodón (3-7, 5.74).

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas senior tight end Mason Fairchild has been selected as one of 201 semifinalists nationwide for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy, which is college football’s premier scholar-athlete award.

Celebrating its 34th year, the Campbell Trophy is presented by the National Football Foundation &amp; College Hall of Fame (NFF) and recognizes an individual as an absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership. The 201 semifinalists is a record for the trophy, eclipsing the previous mark of 199 nominees in 2000. The impressive list of candidates boasts an impressive 3.65 average GPA, with more than half of the semifinalists having already earned their bachelor’s degrees.

From Andale, Kansas, Fairchild is in his fourth year as a starting tight end for the Jayhawks. He has appeared in 48 games as a Jayhawk, making 33 starts, both of which are the most among offensive players on the Kansas roster this season. Fairchild is fifth on the team with eight receptions for 111 yards, an average of 13.9 yards per reception in 2023. For his career, he sits just outside the top five for career receptions by a tight end with 63 catches for 771 yards and seven touchdowns.

Fairchild was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection last season and he’s a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection while majoring in Engineering Physics. He has previously been nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, which recognizes student-athletes from around the country for exemplary community service, academic dedication and impact on and off the field.

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 25, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to the ARIA Resort &amp; Casino in Las Vegas for the 65th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 5, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports.

The Campbell Trophy was first awarded in 1990. Past recipients include two Rhodes Scholars, a Rhodes Scholar finalist, two Heisman Trophy winners and eight first-round NFL draft picks. Michigan State has fired Mel Tucker, saying the suspended football coach failed to present adequate reasons why he should not be fired for cause after having what he described as consensual phone sex with an activist and rape survivor. The school said Wednesday that it terminated what's left of Tucker's $95 million, 10-year contract for acknowledging actions that subjected the institution to ridicule, among other reasons. The woman said Tucker sexually harassed her during the phone call in April 2022. Michigan State informed the 51-year-old Tucker that it planned to fire him on Sept. 18 and gave him a week to respond, which he did on Monday.

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team couldn't get the offense untracked on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena in a four-set Jayhawk Conference loss to the 20th-ranked Barton Cougars.

The Blue Dragons hit .059 for the match as Barton defeated Hutchinson 26-24, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17 in a battle of the top two teams in the Jayhawk Conference.

Hutchinson fell to 15-8 for the season and 6-2 in the KJCCC. Barton is now 17-3 and 7-1 in league play. The Blue Dragons travel to Dodge City at 2 p.m. Saturday to begin the second half of league play.

The Blue Dragons tied a season high with 15 team blocks on Wednesday. Sophomores&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/dean_anna_0g77">Anna Dean</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/letcher_cameron_pqkf">Cameron Letcher</a>&nbsp;had six total blocks each.

Offensively, the Blue Dragons were out-hit 50-35 in kills and were held to less than a .100 attack percentage for only the third time this season.

SET 1: The Blue Dragons scored on the 7 of the match's first 10 rallies, taking a 7-3 lead after a Golden ace serve. From that point, there were 10 ties and five lead changes. Trailing 13-12,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/murphy_mckenzie_k4jq">McKenzie Murphy</a>&nbsp;tied the set with a kill. Trailing 15-13, the Dragons took a timeout and went on a 3-0 run, all on Cougar errors. Tied at 20-all, the Dragons took a two-point lead after a Golden kill and Barton attack error. Another Golden kill gave the Dragons a 23-21 lead. Barton scored three-straight points to earn a set-point change. It was turned away by a ball-handling error. The Cougars, who out-hit Hutchinson .116-.114, scored the final two points to win the first set.

SET 2: The Dragons hit a match-high .208 in the second set, but Barton hit .303 to win the set going away. The set was tied at 5-all and Barton took control with an early 6-2 run for an 11-7 lead and a Blue Dragon timeout. Trailing by eight, a Murphy kill cut the Barton lead to 15-8. Down 10 points, a Ravanhani kill got the lead to single-figures. Barton rolled to a 25-14 win to take a two-set lead in the match.

SET 3: The Blue Dragon block took over in the third set. Hutchinson had a single-match high 9 team blocks in the third set and held the Cougars to a minus-.049 attack percentage. Letcher had five blocks in the set and Dean added four blocks and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/panzetta_gabriella_jgb3">Gabriella Panzetta</a>&nbsp;had three blocks in the third set. A Dean/Panzetta double block gave the Dragons an 8-6 lead. Back-to-back Barton blocks gave the Cougars a 14-11 lead. Letcher stopped that run and Hutchinson eventually tied the set at 16-all after a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/wilson_shelbi_kgd0">Shelbi Wilson</a>&nbsp;ace serve. Trailing 19-18, Dean had a kill and an ace for a 20-19 lead. Tied at 22-all, a Golden/Letcher double block gave the Dragons the lead for good. SET 4: Barton scored the first five points of the set, but the Blue Dragons scored the next seven to lead 7-5 after a Barton attack error. From that point, there were 10 ties and five lead changes. Trailing 13-12,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/murphy_mckenzie_k4jq">McKenzie Murphy</a>&nbsp;tied the set with a kill. Trailing 15-13, the Dragons took a timeout and went on a 3-0 run, all on Cougar errors. Tied at 20-all, the Dragons took a two-point lead after a Golden kill and Barton attack error. Another Golden kill gave the Dragons a 23-21 lead. Barton scored three-straight points to earn a set-point change. It was turned away by a ball-handling error. The Cougars, who out-hit Hutchinson .116-.114, scored the final two points to win the first set.SET 2: The Dragons hit a match-high .208 in the second set, but Barton hit .303 to win the set going away. The set was tied at 5-all and Barton took control with an early 6-2 run for an 11-7 lead and a Blue Dragon timeout. Trailing by eight, a Murphy kill cut the Barton lead to 15-8. Down 10 points, a Ravanhani kill got the lead to single-figures. Barton rolled to a 25-14 win to take a two-set lead in the match.SET 3: The Blue Dragon block took over in the third set. Hutchinson had a single-match high 9 team blocks in the third set and held the Cougars to a minus-.049 attack percentage. Letcher had five blocks in the set and Dean added four blocks and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/panzetta_gabriella_jgb3">Gabriella Panzetta</a>&nbsp;had three blocks in the third set. A Dean/Panzetta double block gave the Dragons an 8-6 lead. Back-to-back Barton blocks gave the Cougars a 14-11 lead. Letcher stopped that run and Hutchinson eventually tied the set at 16-all after a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/wilson_shelbi_kgd0">Shelbi Wilson</a>&nbsp;ace serve. Trailing 19-18, Dean had a kill and an ace for a 20-19 lead. Tied at 22-all, a Golden/Letcher double block gave the Dragons the lead for good. The Dragons closed out the set with blocks from Golden and Letcher and then Letcher and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wvball/2023-24/bios/johnson_precious_8m6q">Precious Johnson</a>&nbsp;for a 25-22 Dragon win.SET 4: Barton scored the first five points of the set, but the Blue Dragons scored the next seven to lead 7-5 after a Barton attack error. Tied at 11, the Cougars took the lead for good on a Danenberg kill and eventually opened an 18-13 lead. The Dragons hit a minus-.083 in the fourth set and sided out at a 37-percent clip.

Tied at halftime with the Garden City Broncbusters, the No. 13-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's soccer team produced its first multi-goal half in three weeks to earn a Jayhawk Conference victory on Wednesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

Garden City is now 5-5-3 overall and 1-5-3 (6 points) in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons are 1-0-1 against Garden City this season and 31-0-1 all-time against the Busters.The three goal second half was the first time the Blue Dragons scored more than one goal in a single game since a two-goal second half in a 4-1 victory over Coffeyville on September 9.Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/delgado_adriana_03x3">Adriana Delgado</a>&nbsp;had a goal and an assist for the Blue Dragons.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/edwards_kaitlyn_56gt">Kaitlyn Edwards</a>&nbsp;also had a goal, while&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/wyatt_jayda_vgup">Jayda Wyatt</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/gallegos_abigahil_wq6y">Abigahil Gallegos</a>&nbsp;had assists.The Blue Dragons out-hit 13-9, including 10-5 in shots on goal.Blue Dragon freshman goalkeeper&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wsoc/2023-24/bios/slothower_karsyn_3puo">Karsyn Slothower</a>&nbsp;had four saves.Hutchinson scored the game's first goal when Wyatt played a perfect long pass into the right side of the penalty box. Marx chased it down and drew Garden City goalkeeper Karime Silva out and guided a shot to Silva's right and into the goal for a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.Garden City tied the game when Jessica Newton took a free kick from just outside the penalty box. The shot deflected straight down off the crossbar and was deemed all the way across the goal line for a Buster game-tying goal in the 34th minute.Seven minutes into the second half, the Blue Dragons were awarded one of their 10 corner kicks. Delgado sent a perfect corner into the box that Edwards headed into the goal for a 2-1 lead. The goal, her eighth of the season, snapped a five-game streak with a goal for Edwards, who was credited with her second game-winning goal.The Blue Dragons made it 3-1 when Delgado scored her 12th goal of the season after hammering how a deflected shot from Marx int the goal in the 80th minute.The Dragons got Garden City off-guard on their final goal. After a Garden City clearing attempt, Gallegos played a long ball into open space right of the goal and Marx scored her second of the game and ninth of the season for a 4-1 lead in the 84th minute.
