LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;The Kansas Jayhawks are staying home for the first weekend of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament. Coach Ray Bechard’s team was selected as the No. 4 seed in the Wisconsin Quarter and will host Omaha on Thursday at 7 p.m., at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.

“The last couple years we’ve had to go play some really good teams and now we’ve got three really good teams coming here and some coaches I know pretty well,” said Bechard. “It will be a really competitive group of four teams and we are looking forward to it being on our home floor.”

The winner of that match will face the winner of fifth-seeded Penn State and Yale at Horejsi on Friday at 5:30 p.m., for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16. Penn State and Yale will meet at 4:30 p.m., on Thursday at Horejsi. Wisconsin, ranked No. 5 in the country in the most recent AVCA Top 25, is the No. 1 seed in the Wisconsin Quarter. Oregon is the No. 2 seed, followed by third-seeded Purdue and No. 4 seed, Kansas.

The tournament selection marks the 12th in program history and third-straight appearance. All 12 tournament appearances have been under Bechard, with the first coming in 2003. Sunday’s selection also marks the sixth time the Jayhawks have received a national seed in program history and will mark the first time Kansas has hosted at Horejsi since it was renovated prior to the 2019 season. All total, Kansas has hosted five previous times, with two coming in Allen Fieldhouse (2012 and 2013), two at Horejsi prior to the renovation (2015 and 2016), and once at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka (2014).

Kansas (23-5) currently boasts a 14-match winning streak at Horejsi, which is the sixth-longest active home winning streak in Division 1. The 14 home wins in a season are the most by the Jayhawks since winning 15 in 2015, and the 14-match winning streak is the longest since winning 17 straight from Nov. 14, 2015 to Dec. 1, 2016.

Kansas finished the regular season with 23 wins, marking the eighth time in Bechard’s 26-season tenure and the 18th in program history that Kansas has 20 or more wins. Kansas has had 23-plus wins in 12 of those seasons, including five in Bechard’s career.

One of those 23 wins came against first round opponent Omaha, when Kansas topped the Mavericks in straight sets in August in Omaha. The Jayhawks went on to finish second in the Big 12 Conference with a 14-4 league mark. The 14 conference wins marked the most since the Jayhawks won 15 and its first-ever Big 12 title in 2016.

Tickets for postseason play at Horejsi will go on sale for the public at 12 p.m., CST on Monday.

No. 3 Washington, No. 4 Florida State and No. 5 Oregon all moved up a spot in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll" target="_blank">The Associated Press college football poll</a>&nbsp;Sunday, giving the Pac-12 two top-five teams for the first time since the final ranking of the 2016 season.

Georgia remained No. 1 as the two-time defending national champions have been for 24 straight polls, dating back to the middle of the last season. The Bulldogs received 52 of 62 first-place votes.

Michigan returned to No. 2 following a week at No. 3 and received 10 first-place votes after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-state-michigan-score-harbaugh-20131d4e3ac7662c51362bc72059c54a" target="_blank">beating Ohio State 30-24</a>&nbsp;in Ann Arbor on Saturday.

The Buckeyes slipped from second to No. 6, clearing the way for Washington to reach its best ranking since finishing the 2000 season at No. 3 and setting up a top-five matchup with Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game on Friday in Las Vegas.

The final Pac-12 championship game in the conference’s current form before 10 members leave for other Power Five conferences will be its first matching top-five teams.

The last time there were two Pac-12 teams in the top five of the AP poll was 2016, when Southern California finished No. 3 and Washington No. 4. The last time it happened during the season was Oct. 6, 2013, when Oregon was No. 2 and Stanford was fifth.

No. 7 Texas and No. 8 Alabama held their places Sunday. Missouri moved up one spot to ninth and Penn State to No. 10.

The same eight teams have been the top eight teams in the country for five straight weeks, with the only loss among those teams during that span being Ohio State’s to Michigan.

The last time there was no team turnover in the top eight for that long was 2008 in Weeks 11-15. That year Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, USC, Penn State, Utah and Texas Tech held the top eight spots in some order for five weeks.

Among the top eight teams there are only four losses, one each for Oregon, Ohio State, Texas and Alabama. Of those four losses, three have come to other teams in the top eight: Oregon lost to Washington, Ohio State lost to Michigan and Alabama lost to Texas.

Texas’ loss came to No. 12 Oklahoma. Extend it out to the top 12 to include No. 11 Mississippi and the only loss to a currently unranked team among that group is Oklahoma’s to Kansas.

North Carolina State and SMU made their AP Top 25 season debuts this week, raising to 44 the total number of teams to be ranked for at least a week this season.

Falling out for the first time this season was Tennessee, which finished its regular season 8-4 with a victory over Vanderbilt after barely hanging on at No. 25 last week.

Kansas State also dropped out again after losing a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cyclones-wildcats-iowa-kansas-state-football-score-4068afa45a02f5a0cb82d58ebd31834f" target="_blank">high-scoring game in the snow to Iowa State.</a>

Five teams from non-Power Five conferences in the AP Top 25 is the most since the final 2021 poll.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 22-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team pulled away from the Colby Trojans on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Arena in a 92-81 Blue Dragon victory.

Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team survived a tough offensive first half, fought its way back into the game and Sunday's game with Colby open in the final 2 minutes, 28 seconds to earn a Jayhawk Conference victory.

Leading by one point with 2:28 to play, the Blue Dragons outscored Colby 13-3 in the final 2:28 to earn a 92-81 victory over Colby at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons won their third game in a row and improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the KJCCC. The Dragons travel to Independence on Wednesday. Colby fell to 4-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Hutchinson shot just 38.5 percent in the first half and trailed 40-38 at halftime, their second halftime deficit of the season. Colby's largest lead of the opening half was nine points at 24-15 with 8:48 to play in the opening half.

The Blue Dragons turned their offensive fortunes around in the second half, shooting 61.3 percent (19 of 31) with six 3-point goals. JP. Ricks and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/thomas_kamryn_j9zm">Kamryn Thomas</a>&nbsp;had 13 points each and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/whiteney_dallas_ktg5">Dallas Whitney</a>&nbsp;scored 10 points in the second-half surge.

Leading 79-78 with 2:28 to play in regulation, Ricks started the late scoring explosion with a 12-foot jumper for a three-point lead. The lead quickly grew to eight after Whitney hit a 3-pointer, and then after a Ricks' steal, he had a transition dunk to give the Dragons an 86-79 lead with 1:13 remaining.

The Dragons scored 11 unanswered points, which was snapped by Maxence Massadila's 3-pointer with 18 seconds left.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/simon_valentino_8svq">Valentino Simon</a>&nbsp;capped the late Dragon run with two free throws for a 92-81 lead with 17 seconds to play in the game.

Ricks led the Blue Dragons with a career-high 18 points and tied a career best with three 3-point goals. Ricks added five assists and a pair of steals.

Thomas scored 17 points, going 5 of 7 from the floor in the second half. He had two 3-point goals.

Whitney finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high-tying six assists off the bench.

Simon had 12 points and seven rebounds. Dre Weathers had 12 points and six rebounds.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2023-24/bios/holman_zoe_o8t4">Zoe Holman</a>&nbsp;finished with nine points and six assists.

🏀 MBB: Blue Dragons pull away from Colby late for win

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patrick Mahomes passed for 298 yards and two touchdowns, and the Kansas City Chiefs ended their three-game second-half scoring drought to rally past the Las Vegas Raiders 31-17 on Sunday.

Kansas City (8-3) fell behind 14-0 in the second quarter but tied it by halftime and pulled away after that. Isiah Pacheco rushed for two touchdowns, and Rashee Rice caught eight passes for 107 yards and a TD.

Josh Jacobs rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown for the Raiders (5-7), ending a 12-game streak in which the Chiefs did not allow a 100-yard rusher.

The NFL's reigning rushing champion also broke 1,000 yards from scrimmage this season to become the only player to reach that mark each year since 2019. He joined Hall of Famer Marcus Allen as the only Raiders backs to accomplish that in their first five seasons.

Las Vegas' Aidan O'Connell passed for 248 yards and a touchdown.

The Chiefs have held 11 consecutive opponents to 24 or fewer points, just three off the team record. They shut down the Raiders in the second half, holding them to 113 yards after Las Vegas picked up 245 in the first two quarters.

Kansas City extended its winning streak to six games over the Raiders, and the Chiefs have beaten their AFC West rival in 16 of the past 18 meetings.

More importantly for the Chiefs, they bounced back from a 21-17 loss Monday night to Philadelphia, a Super Bowl rematch in which several receivers dropped passes.

Those receivers did a much better job against Las Vegas, especially after the Chiefs fell into an early 14-point hole.

The Raiders took the lead on an&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Raiders/status/1728889722771255657?s=20">18-yard pass from O'Connell to Jakobi Meyers</a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Raiders/status/1728898614314070212?s=20">63-yard run by Jacobs</a>&nbsp;in which he stiff-armed safety Mike Edwards. But Las Vegas also left points on the board when interim coach Antonio Pierce eschewed going for it on fourth-and-1 and Daniel Carlson missed a 30-yard field goal to the right.

Kansas City answered with short two touchdowns in the second quarter to tie the game and end a three-period scoreless stretch.&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Chiefs/status/1728902270165696900?s=20">Pacheco rushed for a 1-yard score</a>&nbsp;and Mahomes connected with&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/Chiefs/status/1728907136627798341?s=20">Justin Watson on a 3-yard TD</a>&nbsp;25 seconds before the break.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 15-ranked Hutchinson Community College women's basketball team saw all 11 players score in an 86-46 win over Colby on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Arena.

The game was postponed from Saturday to Sunday due to the winter weather that made its way through Kansas on Saturday.

Hutchinson (8-0, 2-0 KJCCC) knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers in the victory, while shooting a season-high 52.5 percent from the field.

The Blue Dragons led 19-11 after the first quarter, but built the lead up to as many as 28 in the second quarter. Hutchinson went into the locker room with a 47-22 lead.

The lead continued to grow in the second half, leading by 42 late in the fourth quarter.&nbsp;

Kiki Smith scored 19 to lead the Blue Dragons in scoring, as the freshman from Topeka has scored in double-figures all seven games this season. Hailey Jackson scored 16, while Journey Armstead had 11 points and nine assists.

The Blue Dragons distributed the ball well in the win, dishing off 23 assists on 31 made field goals. Armstead led the team with nine, while Akaysha Muggeridge had five. Nine different Hutchinson players had at least one assist.&nbsp;

Colby (3-4, 0-3) was held to 34 percent shooting and were led in scoring by Stella McIntyre with 13. The Trojans never held a lead in the contest.

The Blue Dragons and Trojans tip off at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the snowstorm that struck the state on Saturday forced the game to be moved back a day.

The Blue Dragons have played strong on the defensive end of the floor all season long, but the last two outings have been stellar for Hutchinson.

The Blue Dragons have allowed only 63.5 points per game in the last two games, including a season-low 54-point output by Labette on Tuesday at the Sports Arena. The Dragons have allowed just 38.4 percent overall shooting and forced 22.5 turnovers in double-figure victories over Dodge City and Labette.

Only 3 of 7 opponents have broken 80 points this season against the Blue Dragons.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2023-24/bios/armstead_journey_w1mg">Journey Armstead</a>&nbsp;led four Hutchinson players in double figures with a game-high 14 points. The Blue Dragons held their sixth opponent to less than 30 percent shooting, limiting the Mavericks to 29.0 percent from the floor.

One week ago, the Blue Dragons opens KJCCC play with a come-from-behind 72-70 victory at No. 11 Dodge City. The Dragons trailed by as many as 12 points and was down by 10 with 3:20 remaining before completing the 13th comeback for a win from a double-figure deficit on the John Ontjes era.

Colby started the season 3-1 before dropped its first two Jayhawk Conference games to Garden City and Dodge City. The Trojans were dominated by Dodge City in their last outing on Tuesday, falling 86-40

Veteran head coach Darin Spence took over the Colby program this season. Colby is the fourth Jayhawk Conference coaching job for Spence, who ranks eighth in KJCCC and Region VI coaching history with 342 victories.

TOPEKA —&nbsp;St. Thomas Aquinas coach Randy Dreiling etched his name into history in the Class 4A state championship game against Andover Central.Dreiling won his ninth state championship and tied former Kapaun Mt. Carmel coach Ed Kriwiel for most all-time state titles by a head coach in Kansas in a 35-7 victory at Hummer Sports Park. I

t was Aquinas’ first state championship since 2018 when the Saints defeated Wichita Northwest for the Class 5A title.&nbsp;Dreiling said winning this state championship was a little bit snowier, due to snow that fell for a majority of the game. However, he added each one is totally separate in of itself.“They all feel pretty good,” said Dreiling, who won his second state title with Aquinas. “This was a special journey for these seniors. It’s awesome that they were able to put this together and get it done.“We had a lot of guys that persevered.”Aquinas went to its specialty in the flexbone —&nbsp;running the football —&nbsp; with snow falling to the ground, and the Saints ran for 367 of their 397 yards of total offense. 

No matter what the weather is doing, the Saints will run the football.&nbsp;“If it’s 105, it’s pound time,” Dreiling said. “That’s what we do. It’s been pretty successful.”After returning for the postseason following an early season injury, Aquinas senior Gianni Rizzi put on a show in his final high school game. Rizzi ran for 171 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns of five and eight yards, both coming in the second quarter after Andover Central cut the deficit to 13-7.&nbsp;

They’re a great team. They played hard, but we had the talent and we have the courage and everything we wanted to go through and win.”&nbsp;Dreiling said when Rizzi returned from injury, he made an impact helping the Saints knock off Bishop Miege in the regional round.&nbsp;“When Rizzi came back, (that’s) why we got everything going again,” Dreiling said. “(Hunter) Richardson and (Gavin) Middenhorf did a good job filling in when he was gone.”&nbsp;

Aquinas jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Aiden Skinner and a 15-yard touchdown run by junior William Callahan. Andover Central made it 13-7 with 10:16 left in the second quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by junior Maddox Archibald.&nbsp;Aquinas got a second touchdown from Callahan, with a 7-yard run with 37 seconds left in the third.Andover Central threw three interceptions on the afternoon that resulted in 14 points for Aquinas.&nbsp;

Even though it was Andover Central’s fourth state runner-up in program history and second since 2021, coach Derek Tuttle was proud of his team making it back to state.“The best thing they showed throughout the month of November I thought was their heart (and) playing with a lot of energy,” Tuttle said. “Playing with heart and desire. There are a lot of great kids here.“We had a little trouble cutting in the snow with some of the routes and stuff. They had to play in it too. Just (a) tough day all around for us.”&nbsp;

Andover Central finished with 111 yards of total offense with Archibald having 43 yards on 11 carries and a score.&nbsp;After a two-year stint as a Class 4A program, the Saints will return to being a Class 5A program in 2024. Andover Central will regroup looking for its first ever state championship in program history in 2024.&nbsp;

Andover Central made it 13-7 with 10:16 left in the second quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run by junior Maddox Archibald.&nbsp;Aquinas got a second touchdown from Callahan, with a 7-yard run with 37 seconds left in the third.Andover Central threw three interceptions on the afternoon that resulted in 14 points for Aquinas.&nbsp;Even though it was Andover Central’s fourth state runner-up in program history and second since 2021, coach Derek Tuttle was proud of his team making it back to state.“The best thing they showed throughout the month of November I thought was their heart (and) playing with a lot of energy,” Tuttle said. “Playing with heart and desire. There are a lot of great kids here.“We had a little trouble cutting in the snow with some of the routes and stuff. They had to play in it too. Just (a) tough day all around for us.”&nbsp;Andover Central finished with 111 yards of total offense with Archibald having 43 yards on 11 carries and a score.&nbsp;After a two-year stint as a Class 4A program, the Saints will return to being a Class 5A program in 2024. Liverpool secured a 1-1 draw against City at Etihad Stadium and Arsenal scored late to beat Brentford 1-0. Newcastle routed Chelsea 4-1. Tottenham could go level on points with City if it beats Aston Villa on Sunday. And Villa has the chance to go level with Liverpool and a point behind Guardiola's team.

Wichita State (6-1) overcame a rare off night from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/xavier-bell/7579">Xavier Bell</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/colby-rogers/7582">Colby Rogers</a>&nbsp;to improve to 4-0 at home this season. Bell and Rogers combined for just 13 points on 3-of-19 shooting.

The 6-1 start for head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/coaches/paul-mills/1128">Paul Mills</a>&nbsp;ties the best seven-game start to a Wichita State coaching career since Harry Miller in 1971.Pohto tallied 25 points on an efficient 9-of-13 shooting and a perfect night at the line (6-for-6). A fast-paced first half saw Wichita State grab a 48-39 lead after 20 minutes. All seven Shockers that scored in the half had at least five points. Ridgnal provided a spark off the bench once again, scoring 11 points to lead all scorers.

Pohto dished out three assists to go with nine first half points. Beverly tied a season high in assists in the first half alone, with six.

Wichita State led by as many as 12 over the first 20 minutes but Norfolk State was able to stay in it with key buckets.

Midway through the second half Norfolk State put together a 6-0 run, cutting the lead to just four, 60-56, forcing a Wichita State timeout. Immediately following that timeout, Wichita State responded with the next eight points, six of those belonging to Pohto.

With 4:12 remaining, Norfolk State knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to seven. That would be as close as it would get. A knockout punch resulting in a game-sealing 8-0 run gave the Shockers their largest lead of the night, 80-65, and only 1:01 left on the clock.

🏀 MBB: Pohto Propels Wichita State to Win over Norfolk State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –&nbsp;Dayton dominated the battle of the boards as the Flyers defeated Wichita State, 74-63, Saturday morning at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center.

"We've got to continue to improve our toughness," head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/coaches/terry-nooner/1136">Terry Nooner</a>&nbsp;said. "They were real physical, big and athletic, so we've just got to do a better job executing against physicality.

"Dayton (4-3), ranked No. 31 in the nation in offensive rebounds coming into the game, outrebounded the Shockers (3-3) 50-27 with Arianna Smith tallying 19 rebounds by herself. The Flyers collected 20 offensive rebounds to the Shockers' 8.

Blow led the first-half scoring with 16 of the Shockers' 36 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and hitting Wichita State's only first-half three after only scoring 5 points against Akron."

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/salese-blow/7620">Salese Blow</a>&nbsp;was a bright spot for us, especially how she carried us in the first half," Nooner said. "She's a natural scorer. She just knows how to score the basketball, and she's super confident in what she brings to the table in our offensive game, so she knows that if she has a bad day, she's set up to have a good day the next game."

Dayton's Ivy Wolf shot 5-for-8 from three in the first half, putting up 13 points to give the Flyers a one-point advantage at the half.

Dayton went on an 8-0 run early in the third quarter to take a six-point lead, but McCarty hit a three, and the Shockers cut the lead to two before the Flyers went on another 8-0 run to end the quarter with a 12-point lead.

Jobe started to heat up at the beginning of the fourth quarter, hitting a three and a fastbreak layup to bring the Shockers within seven, but the Flyers swung the momentum back in their favor forcing a Shocker timeout with a 6-0 run.

Dayton had 13 rebounds in the fourth quarter, 6 offensive, limiting the Shockers' possessions as Wichita State shot 1-for-9 from the field down the stretch and was unable to score in the final three minutes of the game.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Abu Sama III ran through the snow for 276 yards and three touchdowns, Rocco Becht threw for 230 yards and three more scores, and Iowa State held No. 19 Kansas State on fourth down with less than a minute left for a 42-35 victory on Saturday night.

The shortest of the Cyclones' six touchdowns was a tying 33-yard pass from Becht to Jayden Higgins in the fourth quarter, and the longest was a go-ahead 82-yard pass to Jaylin Noel that gave Iowa State (7-5, 6-3 Big 12) the lead with 8:04 to go.

In between, Sama had TD runs of 60, 71 and 77 yards while finishing with the third-best rushing performance in school history. And the fleet-footed Noel had another 79-yard TD catch to finish with three grabs for 160 yards and two scores.

Kansas State (8-4, 6-3) had a chance to tie the game, twice converting on fourth down while marching inside the Iowa State 20. But on yet another fourth down, Will Howard's pass to the corner of the end zone with 59 seconds to go fell incomplete.

Howard finished with 288 yards and a touchdown pass, a TD run and an interception. Ben Sinnott had 10 catches for 136 yards and a score, while D.J. Giddens and Treshaun Ward also had touchdown runs for the Wildcats.

Heavy snow fell throughout the game, and more than a dozen workers tried valiantly to keep the yard lines and hash marks clear. But the field quickly became the kind of playing surface better suited for sled dogs and snowmobiles.

Players slipped, stumbled and slid. More than once, someone ran over a woebegone official, photographer or cheerleader when they couldn't stop at the sideline. There were fumbles, dropped passes and muffed kicks.

Through it all, the longtime Big 12 rivals kept producing in wildly different fashions.

Kansas State was content to mush through the snow on long, methodical drives, even if it meant converting on third and fourth down to keep them alive. Giddens and Ward did most of the work, but Howard's connection with Sinnott and wide receiver Jayce Brown was a big reason why the Wildcats were able to keep getting into the end zone.

Iowa State was perfectly happy scoring in one big play.

Sama took the first carry of the game 71 yards for a score, then the first carry of the second quarter 77 yards for another. He also had a 60-yard touchdown run in the second half, sandwiched around Brecht's 79-yard touchdown pass to Noel and his 33-yard pass to Higgins that knotted the game 35-all early in the fourth quarter.

On third-and-16 at their own 18-yard line, Becht completed a pass to Noel well short of the first-down marker. But somehow, five different Wildcats failed to stop him and he ran untouched 82 yards for the go-ahead score.

Iowa State had already qualified for its sixth bowl game in the last seven years. Now, the destination could be a bit better.

Kansas State hoped that it would be playing for a chance to defend its Big 12 title on Saturday night. But when Texas, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State won before the Wildcats kicked off, they were left playing for bowl positioning.

Both teams await their bowl destinations.
