LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas super-senior center Taiyanna Jackson will begin her professional career as a member of the Connecticut Sun. The Sun selected Jackson Monday night in the second round of the 2024 WNBA Draft at pick No. 19.

Jackson becomes the eighth all-time WNBA Draft pick in Kansas Women’s Basketball history and the first since Chelsea Gardner was the 21st pick of the Indiana Fever in 2015. She’s the fourth Jayhawk to be selected in the second round of the WNBA Draft.

A three-time Big 12 All-Defensive Team selection, Jackson set the school record for blocked shots with 301 over the course of her time at Kansas. She surpassed the previous single-season record in each of her three seasons, including a record 109 during the 2021-22 season. During the 2023-24 season, Jackson ranked third in the nation with 97 blocks, an average of 3.0 per game.

Jackson averaged a double-double in both of her final two seasons at Kansas, becoming the first Jayhawk since 1982 to accomplish the feat over the course of an entire season. In 2023-24, she was second on the team in scoring at 12.6 points per game, while pulling down 10.0 rebounds per game. She recorded 14 double-doubles in her final season at KU, giving her 41 for her career, which ranks second in Kansas women’s basketball history behind only the legendary Lynette Woodard.

A native of East Chicago, Indiana, Jackson departs Kansas with her name scattered throughout the record books. In addition to ranking as the program’s all-time leader in blocked shots (301) and field goal percentage (.620), Jackson is No. 2 in career double-doubles (41) and games with 10 or more rebounds (50). She’s also No. 3 in program history with 1,027 career rebounds and No. 23 on the all-time scoring list with 1,227 career points.

Jackson leaves behind a legacy that includes being a three-time All-Big 12 selection while at Kansas, including First Team All-Big 12 nods in each of the past two seasons. She is also a two-time All-America Honorable Mention selection by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and a two-time Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Semifinalist.

In 2022-23, Jackson was a candidate for the Lisa Leslie Center of the Year Award, and she was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2023 WNIT. Jackson was twice named the Big 12 Player of the Week during the 2023-24 season, and she earned the honor four times in her Kansas career, which matched Danielle McCray and Chelsea Gardner for the most by a KU player in conference history.

👟 Salthawks fare well at Garden Plain

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Tommy DeSalme has tendered his resignation as the head coach of the Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team.

Hired as the program’s 15th head coach on May 6, 2021, DeSalme leaves the Blue Dragon program after three seasons. His three-year record at Hutchinson was 75-27, including 51-21 in the Jayhawk Conference. His 359 Jayhawk Conference coaching wins at Hutchinson, Cowley and Independence rank sixth in conference history and ninth in Region 6 history.

“The time spent here will always be very special to me,” DeSalme said. “The relationships I have built here in Hutchinson will last a lifetime.”

Twice in his three seasons on the Hutchinson bench, DeSalme guided the Blue Dragons to at-large bids into the NJCAA Tournament. The Blue Dragons went 1-1, advancing to the second round in 2022. The Blue Dragons defeated USC Salkehatchie in the opening round and Chipola in the second round of the 2024 NJCAA Tournament, falling in the national quarterfinals to Connors State.

The Blue Dragons had three All-Americans in DeSalme’s tenure; Angelo Stuart in 2022, Aaron Franklin in 2023 and Kamryn Thomas in 2024 were all third-team All-Americans.

The Blue Dragons had the best offensive team in the Jayhawk Conference in each of DeSalme’s three seasons. The 2022 Blue Dragons averaged 94.2 points per game (fifth-best in the NJCAA); 97.2 points per game (third-best in NJCAA) and 86.6 points per game (23rd best in NJCAA).

A nationwide search for the new Blue Dragon head coach will begin immediately, according to Blue Dragon Athletic Director Josh Gooch.

“A big thank-you goes out to Coach DeSalme for his three years of service to Hutchinson Community College,” Gooch said. “We wish Tommy all the best in his future endeavors.”

Woods went 82-77 on the weekend. Despite the score, Woods called it a "good week" and said he plans to begin preparing for the other three majors including the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June and the British Open in July.

The chasing Chastain was bumped from behind by defending race winner William Byron, who finished third. Brad Keselowski was second. SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—The Wichita Wind Surge continued their offensive power display in an 8-7 loss in the series finale with the Springfield Cardinals at Hammons Stadium.

Carson McCusker&nbsp;left the yard for his first home run of the year in the top of the second. The two-run shot went the opposite way to give Wichita a 1-0 lead, marking the fifth straight contest in which the Wind Surge was the first team to score.&nbsp;Alerick Soularie&nbsp;also pushed a ball deep enough to center field to score&nbsp;Noah Cardenas&nbsp;on a sacrifice fly in the frame to double the Wichita advantage.

Jefferson Morales’ first home run of 2024 was a little more grand two innings later. The left fielder emptied the bases after scorching a blast to left field toward his teammates in the bullpen.

Smacking baseballs high and far wasn’t the only way the Wind Surge scored today.&nbsp;Kyler Fedko&nbsp;grounded one through the hole into left field in the top of the fifth inning for a 7-1 Wind Surge lead.

The Cardinals rallied for seven straight, starting in the bottom half of the fifth through the last of the eighth, to finish a series sweep of Wichita.&nbsp;Jorel Ortega&nbsp;reached base in the top of the ninth on a hit-by-pitch before the following three Wind Surge batters hit into outs.

&nbsp; NORMAN, Okla.&nbsp;— K-State erased a six-run deficit and evened the score seven, but Scott Mudler's go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave Oklahoma an 8-7 walk-off victory over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

K-State (21-13, 7-8 Big 12) crawled out of an early 6-0 hole and battled to tie the game at six until OU (21-14, 11-4 Big 12) took back the lead in the eighth.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/chuck-ingram/11526">Chuck Ingram</a>&nbsp;launched a game-tying home run to keep the Cats in the game until a double to right and Mudler's single scored the game-deciding run.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; "Those are the gut-wrenching losses," said head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>. "Those are the ones that sting. Our kids fought so hard to get back from a six-run deficit, and then hit a big homerun to tie it back up for a second time. It just felt like it was going to be a win."

The Cats out-hit OU by a 12-9 count and stranded five baserunners in the game compared to the Sooners' seven left on base.

⚾ Sooners walk off Cats Sunday

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler spent more time looking at his feet than any of the white leaderboards at Augusta National, all of them showing what everyone was watching — a Masters champion again, the undisputed best player in golf.

He prefers to stay in his own little world, population one.

Nobody is close to him in the game at the moment.

Scheffler is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.owgr.com/current-world-ranking" target="_blank">No. 1 in the world</a>&nbsp;by a margin not seen since Tiger Woods in his prime. In nine tournaments this year, he doesn’t have a round over par and has earned over $15 million. And on Sunday, he delivered the greatest piece of evidence when he slipped into that green jacket.

Scheffler pulled ahead with magnificent shots around the turn, poured it on along the back nine as his challengers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/masters-augusta-national-bc2c153f3f5b6b46cab93231c2fe39e5">melted away with mistakes</a>&nbsp;and closed with a 4-under 68 to claim his second Masters in three years with a four-shot victory.

“I had a lot of really talented players trying to chase me down, and I knew pars weren’t going to get it done,” Scheffler said.

Unlike two years ago&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/Scottie-Scheffler-the-Masters-Rory-McIlroy-Augusta-golf-2aa43983368331963764fc0761f09abe">when he won his first major</a>, there were no doubts Sunday morning, no tears, and no wife to reassure him he was built for a moment like this. His wife, Meredith, was home in Dallas expecting their first child at the end of the month.

Scheffler made sure there was no drama, either.

Much like Woods he made the outcome look inevitable with sublime control, the difference being a peach shirt instead of Sunday red, and no fist pumps until it was over.

After sharing hugs with caddie Ted Scott and Collin Morikawa, Scheffler&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TheMasters/status/1779677337371517158" target="_blank">turned to face the crowd with both arms raised</a>. “WOOOOOO!” he yelled, slamming his fist.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/masters-ludvig-aberg-2024-runner-up-3012b843493a488fa6de324f2d433504">Masters newcomer Ludvig Aberg</a>, among four players who had a share of the lead at one point, lost ground with his approach went into the pond left of the 11th hole and he made double bogey. Against a player like Scheffler, those mistakes are not easy to overcome.

Aberg closed with a 69 and was the runner-up, not a bad debut for someone playing in his first major championship.

Morikawa, who had two double bogeys to fall out of the hunt, shot 74 and tied for third with Tommy Fleetwood (69) and Max Homa (73), whose hopes ended on the par-3 12th with a double bogey from the bushes, not Rae’s Creek.

“He is pretty amazing at letting things roll off his back and stepping up to very difficult golf shots and treating them like their own,” Homa said about Scheffler. “He’s obviously a tremendous talent, but I think that is his superpower.”

Woods, meanwhile, closed with a 77 and finished in last place at 16-over 304, the highest 72-hole score of his career. This came two days after he set the Masters record for making his 24th consecutive cut.

The 27-year-old Scheffler is the fourth-youngest player to have two green jackets. He now has three victories against the strongest fields — Bay Hill, The Players Championship and the Masters — in his last four starts. The other was a runner-up finish in Houston.

Scheffler finished at 11-under 277 and earned $3.6 million from the $20 million purse.

Perhaps even more daunting for the rest of golf is that Scheffler now has 10 victories worldwide dating to his first PGA Tour title at the Phoenix Open just two years and two months ago.

During that stretch, Scheffler has finished in the top 10 a staggering 65% of the time.

It was the fourth straight Masters when the winner came to the 18th green with one arm in the green jacket. That doesn’t mean Sunday was a walk in golf’s most gorgeous garden.

“I felt like I was battling the whole week,” Scheffler said. “It was a long week. I had to battle some ups and downs. And, you know, I’m very fortunate to be sitting here with you.”

Four players had a share of the lead at various points along the front nine, and then Scheffler began to assert himself with three straight birdies around the turn.

He got up-and-down with a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-5 eighth. He hit the perfect wedge that caught the ridge and&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TheMasters/status/1779616581770707037" target="_blank">came inches within going in on No. 9</a>, leaving him a tap-in birdie. And then he holed another 10-foot birdie putt on the 10th to build a two-shot lead.

“I hadn’t hit many good iron shots, which is a bit unusual for me,” Scheffler said. “And going into No. 9, it was nice to get that feeling of hitting a really well-struck shot and then it set me up to have a really nice back nine.”

And then, just like in the best days of Woods, he let everyone else make the big numbers.

In the group ahead, Aberg’s approach to the 11th slammed off the bank and into the water, leading to double bogey.

Homa managed a tough par on the 11th, only to hit it so long over the par-3 12th the golf ball plunged deep into bushes and left him no choice but to take a penalty drop. His chip didn’t reach the green, and two putts later he had double bogey.

Morikawa already had begun to slide by taking two shots to get out of a deep bunker left of the ninth green for double bogey. He all but sealed his fate with a shot into the water on the 11th and took double bogey.

The Jayhawks out-hit the Red Raiders six to five and left seven runners on base as KU fell to 26-14-1 and 11-7 in Big 12 play, while Texas Tech improved to 26-13 (6-9 Big 12).
HOW IT HAPPENED

After Roszak&nbsp;advanced&nbsp;to third&nbsp;thanks to&nbsp;a flyout, Ashlyn Anderson brought her home with a RBI single to give KU its first lead of the day, 2-1.</li>

 </figure><div>LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash; Kansas exploded for 16 runs in the sixth inning and the Jayhawks defeated Pacific 19-3 on Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark to complete a three-game sweep. The 16 runs tied a program record for most runs in an inning.
The 16-run sixth inning included 20 batters going to the plate and collecting nine hits with two home runs. Ben Hartl hit a three-run homer and Kodey Shojinaga hit a grand slam in the sixth. Collier Cranford, John Nett, Luke Leto, Jake English and Chase Jans also drove in runs during the offensive outburst.
Nett had a career day at the plate, finishing 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs, four runs scored and a walk. The multi-homer game was the first of his career and his four RBIs and four runs scored were both season highs. Shojinaga also finished with a career-high six RBIs. The Jayhawks moved to 19-14 on the season with the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED &bull; Nett wasted no time giving Kansas the lead as he hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning to give Kansas a 1-0 advantage. &bull; Pacific (6-29) came back and took the lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI double by Kaden Petersen and an RBI single by Chase Graves. The Tigers were up 2-1 after three innings. &bull; Pacific added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Rylan Evans to make it 3-1. &bull; Kansas got the run back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI double by Collier Cranford. That cut the Pacific lead to 3-2. &bull; In the bottom of the fifth, Nett led off the inning with his second home run of the game. The solo homer tied the game at 3-3. &bull; The first of the 16 runs in the sixth inning came on an RBI single by Cranford. A couple batters later, Nett hit a two-run single. Shojinaga followed that up two batters later with a two-run single of his own. Then, Hartl hit a three-run homer to left field. Later in the inning, Leto hit an RBI single and English was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Shojinaga was up next and crushed a grand slam to left-center field. Jans wrapped up the scoring with a two-run double. That brought the score to 19-3 where it ended after seven innings.

Wichita State (19-17, 10-8) has now lost three straight conference series' for the first time since 2015.Wichita State's offense was once again held in check other than solo home runs from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/addison-barnard/7558">Addison Barnard</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/softball/roster/bailey-urban/7572">Bailey Urban</a>. &nbsp; WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp;— Wichita State surged to a quick 7-0 lead but had to fight off a spirited rally from Florida Atlantic to earn a 10-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning due to the travel curfew.

The Shockers (21-16, 7-5) only scored in three innings but made them count, getting three runs in the third, four in the fifth and three more in the seventh.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/seth-stroh/7543">Seth Stroh</a>&nbsp;opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the third, then the Shockers added two more in the inning thanks to some charity from Florida Atlantic starter Trey Beard. A pair of walks put runners at first and second for&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/camden-johnson/7605">Camden Johnson</a>, who rifled a base hit through the left side of the infield.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/kam-durnin/7604">Kam Durnin</a>&nbsp;was waved to the plate and the throw skipped off the glove of catcher John Schroeder, allowing Durnin to score. Johnson attempted to advance to second on the errant throw, which was recovered in foul territory by Beard; his throw to second then sailed into center, bringing&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/lane-haworth/7609">Lane Haworth</a>&nbsp;around for a 3-0 lead.

One big swing of the bat did all the damage for Wichita State in the fifth. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/derek-williams/7627">Derek Williams</a>, who blasted a 1-2 pitch from Beard over the wall in left for a grand slam and a 7-0 advantage. It was the team-leading ninth home run of the season for Williams.

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/tyler-dobbs/7616">Tyler Dobbs</a>&nbsp;(5-3) made the early lead stand up by pitching in and out of trouble over five scoreless innings. The left-hander stranded 10 runners aboard for Florida Atlantic (19-14, 6-6), including the bases loaded in the third and fifth innings. Dobbs ended his day with a season-high seven strikeouts, allowing four hits and five walks.

The Owls began to chip away against the Wichita State bullpen, putting a run on the board in the sixth and four more in the seventh that featured a string of seven straight FAU baserunners.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/hunter-holmes/8976">Hunter Holmes</a>&nbsp;entered with the bases loaded and the lead down to 7-5, getting a strikeout and a fly out to escape with the lead intact.

Wichita State restored their edge with three two-out runs in the home half of the inning, courtesy of a&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/mauricio-millan/7532">Mauricio Millan</a>&nbsp;RBI single and a two-run double from Stroh. Holmes then worked a scoreless top of the eighth and the game was called one hitter into the bottom half.

Holmes earned his first save of the season with 1.2 scoreless innings, striking out two.

Beard (2-3) took the loss for Florida Atlantic, allowing five hits and seven runs over 4.2 innings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Shockers wrap up the homestand on Wednesday night against Oral Roberts. First pitch from Eck Stadium is scheduled for 6:00 pm.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas, performed the procedure on Friday. Strider complained about discomfort in his elbow after pitching four innings in Atlanta's 6-5 win over Arizona on April 5. An MRI the next day revealed damage to his UCL. Braves manager Brian Snitker says the team has been looking at replacement options since Strider initially went down but doesn't have anyone specific in mind yet.

TEMPE. Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes will likely be sold to Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith shortly after the team's final game and will include a provision guaranteeing current owner Alex Meruelo an expansion team if a new arena is built within five years, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press. The $1 billion sale is expected to happen between the Coyotes' final game of the 2023-24 season and the start of the playoffs, barring unforeseen circumstances, the person said on condition of anonymity because the planned deal has not been announced. The deal will transfer the franchise's hockey operations to Smith, who plans to move the team to Salt Lake City, and Meruelo will move forward with a planned $3 billion project that will include a new arena in Phoenix.

⚾ Wichita Wind Surge drop sixth game in a row

&nbsp; NORMAN, Okla.  —K-State could not overcome the early six runs Oklahoma put on the board, as the Sooners pounded out 16 hits and dealt the Wildcats an 11-4 loss on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. With the win, Oklahoma takes the series and sits atop the Conference standings alongside West Virginia.

K-State (21-12, 7-7 Big 12), down 6-0 entering the sixth inning, came back with four runs that included a two-run triple by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/kaelen-culpepper/11460">Kaelen Culpepper</a>&nbsp;to bring the game within two. However, the Sooners (20-14, 10-4 Big 12) rattled off six hits in the eighth to help drive in five runs and put the game away.

"Proud of the fight to almost have that game turn our way but in the end, we were not able to make the plays we needed to and they did," K-State head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>&nbsp;said.

Right-hander Kyson Witherspoon was awarded the victory, as the sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., held the Wildcats to one hit with eight strikeouts through five innings (3-2). Witherspoon finished the day allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits in his 5 1/3 innings of work.&nbsp;

"Witherspoon was really good over five innings, keeping us to one hit, that allowed their offense to take advantage of the long ball. They capitalized when they were able to get that lead runner on. We did not," said Hughes.<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/owen-boerema/11457">Owen Boerema</a>&nbsp;suffered the loss, allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits with four strikeouts (3-3).

After a scoreless first inning,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/brady-day/11461">Brady Day</a>&nbsp;generated the Wildcats first hit of the day with a ground-rule double out to center.

OU took advantage of a single and pair of walks to load the bases in the home half of the frame, but a chopper to second ended the threat to get K-State out of the jam, but the Sooners bounced back and homered in three consecutive innings to jump out to a six run-lead.

Down 6-0, the Wildcats rallied for four runs in the sixth led off with back-to-back singles by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/chuck-ingram/11526">Chuck Ingram</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/brendan-jones/11466">Brendan Jones</a>. With one out, the duo laced the Cats second and third hits of the game to bring Culpepper to the plate.

The Wildcats scratched the board as Culpepper launched his fourth triple of the season off the centerfield wall to score Ingram and Jones. The junior shortstop scored on a base knock to left by pinch hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/carson-queck/11473">Carson Queck</a>&nbsp;to force OU to make their first call to the pen.

Carter Campbell relieved Witherspoon and inherited runners on first and second with one out until a double steal moved both runners into scoring position.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/danniel-rivera/11532">Danniel Rivera</a>&nbsp;entered the game and picked up the 1-1 count where the senior grounded out to second to score Day and make it a two-run ballgame, 6-4.
