BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler Crusaders boys tennis team won the class 4A tennis regional on Thursday at the Buhler High School Tennis Courts.

 The Crusaders edged out Scott Community for the team title, 23-17.&nbsp;

Buhler qualified a total of six student-athletes for the class 4A state tennis tournament, which will be held Friday, May 10 and Saturday, May 11 at Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

🎾 Buhler claims regional title on home court

Five pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout and the Jayhawk West champion Hutchinson Community College baseball team got some timely two-out hitting to defeat the Allen Red Devils 3-0 on Thursday afternoon at Hobart-Detter Field.

The No. 17-ranked Blue Dragons improved to 43-11 with their 27th victory in the last 30 games played. The 2024 Blue Dragons tie the 1999 and 2014 Blue Dragons for the sixth-most wins in a single season in team history. Allen fell to 20-32 overall. The Blue Dragons and Red Devils conclude their two-game series at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Iola.

Starting pitcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/giesbrecht_ethan_qz2n">Ethan Giesbrecht</a>&nbsp;(10-2) became the first 10-game winner for the Blue Dragons in a season since 2014 with five shutout innings on Thursday. Giesbrecht allowed just two hits and struck out two over his three innings.

<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/hadden_jacob_atac">Jacob Hadden</a>&nbsp;pitched two scoreless innings with a hit a strikeout and walk.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/perkins_ashton_8hhl">Ashton Perkins</a>&nbsp;worked a perfect sixth. Caden Wandless threw two shutout innings with two strikeouts, a walk and a hit.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/toureau_cole_aswi">Cole Toureau</a>&nbsp;earned his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth that included two strikeouts.

The shutout was the Hutchinson pitching staff's eighth of the season.

The Blue Dragon defense was impressive against Allen. The Dragons turned two inning-ending double plays. Shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/wesslund_cooper_2jkh">Cooper Wesslund</a>&nbsp;made an impressive diving catch in foul territory for an out. Catcher&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/cymbalista_colin_rw61">Colin Cymbalista</a>&nbsp;threw out three Allen runners on base, including a pump-fake to second and drew the Red Devil runner at third off the base for a game-ending run down.

The Blue Dragons out-hit Allen 8-4 and all three runs came with two out.

The Dragons got on the scoreboard in the third inning when&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/pimental-guerrero_luis_ubag">Luis Pimentel-Guerrero</a>&nbsp;drove a two-out base hit through the left side of the infield to score&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/griffin_hank_70om">Hank Griffin</a>&nbsp;for a 1-0 lead.

Hutchinson scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Quinn Mayer singled with two out through the right side of the infield to score Pimentel-Guerrero from second for a 2-0 lead.&nbsp;<a href="https://bluedragonsports.com/sports/bsb/2023-24/bios/tucker_jordan_v8wz">Jordan Tucker</a>&nbsp;followed with an RBI triple to right field that gave the Blue Dragons a 3-0 lead.

Pimentel-Guerrero extended his hitting streak to 16 games with his third-straight three-hit game, going 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Mayer was 2 for 3 with a double, run scored and an RBI. Cymbalista, Tucker and Griffin had the other Blue Dragon hits.

The Blue Dragons are 22-2 at Hobart-Detter Field this season.

Stephenson, now a trustee of the College Baseball Foundation/National College Baseball Hall of Fame, was head baseball coach for the Shockers from 1978-2013. In 2018, he was inducted into the Pizza Hut Shocker Sports Hall of Fame, was a three-time NCAA Coach of the Year and 11-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Stephenson led the Shockers to the College World Series, winning the National Championship in 1989, and seven College World Series appearances overall. He also guided the Shockers to 27 NCAA Regional appearances, two NCAA Super Regional appearances, 20 Valley regular-season titles and 17 Valley tournament championships.

Coach Stephenson directed Wichita State to more wins than any NCAA Division I program in the country eight times and coached 33 players at Wichita State who played in the Major Leagues. He also coached three players named NCAA Player of the Year and one named NCAA Pitcher of the Year. Stephenson coached two players named NCAA Academic Player of the Year and 54 players at Wichita State who earned All-America honors.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the first time in program history, the Buhler High School girls swim team won a meet, claiming their home invitational on Wednesday afternoon at the Hutchinson YMCA.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the A relay placed 4- Shaylin Petz, Addy Tech, Aivlynn Ehmke, and Grace Schmidt. The B relay placed 8th - Avery Schrader, Jordan Spencer, Ellie Goering, and Brayla Johnson.

Shaylin Petz finished 2nd in the 200 freestyle, with a state consideration time, followed by Reyne Kaufman in 6th place, Mckenna Nuttman in 11th, and Cassidy Banning in 14th.

Addy Tech swam the IM this meet, placing 7th. Madison Staib and Cathlyna Theriot placed 10th and 13th, with Jordan Spencer in 15th.

 </figure>NFHS Release<div>A new definition and subsequent warning for faking being fouled (flopping) has been added to the NFHS Basketball Rules Book for the 2024-25 season.
This revision to high school basketball rules was one of 12 changes approved by the NFHS Basketball Rules Committee at its April 9-11 meeting in Indianapolis. All recommended changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.
&ldquo;The committee approved changes addressing a variety of different areas,&rdquo; said Lindsey Atkinson, NFHS Director of Sports. &ldquo;Maintaining a focus on player safety, fairness, balance and rules that officials can effectively adjudicate continue to be the focus of the committee.&rdquo;
&nbsp;Faking being fouled is defined in Rule 4-49-1 as when a player simulates being fouled or makes theatrical or exaggerated movements when there is no illegal contact. Examples include, but are not limited to, embellishing the impact of incidental contact on block/charge plays or field goal attempts, using a &ldquo;head bob&rdquo; to simulate illegal contact and using any tactic to create an opinion of being fouled to gain an advantage.
The new language also establishes a procedure for officials to issue a team warning on the first instance of faking being fouled. The warning is recorded in the scorebook and reported to the head coach. Any additional instances will result in a team technical foul and not a player technical foul, which was previously the case.
&ldquo;(The committee) is hoping to get those dishonest acts out of the game,&rdquo; said Billy Strickland, the executive director of the Alaska School Activities Association and chair of the Basketball Rules Committee.
A change to Rule 3-4-4a removes the restriction of only lettering being allowed on the front of the jersey. If a logo or mascot is displayed on the front, it must be centered directly above the number in place of identifying names. This change does not require schools to purchase new uniforms and may allow some schools to wear current uniforms that were previously not permitted.
A new note to Rule 9-10-1a and edit to Rule 4-10 allows states that utilize a 35-second shot clock to choose to eliminate the five-second closely guarded provision while a player dribbles the ball. The closely guarded rules remain in effect while a player holds the ball regardless of whether or not a state utilizes a shot clock.
Other rules changes approved by the committee include the following.
<ul style="text-align: start;color: rgb(95, 91, 97);background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);font-size: 14px;border: 0px;">
 <li style="border: 0px;">Rule 1-19 clarifies that the use of electronic devices during the game must be limited to recording and tracking stats, reviewing plays or similar contest-related functions. The use of electronic devices for voice or video recording is prohibited.</li>
 <li style="border: 0px;">Rule 2-11-11 notes that if multiple scorers are at the scorer&rsquo;s bench, the scorer(s) that is not official is responsible for comparing records with the official scorer, who then would notify a referee immediately of a discrepancy. This allows the official scorer to remain focused on game play and places the responsibility of comparing scoring information on auxiliary scorers.</li>
 <li style="border: 0px;">Rule 3-3-6 states that if bench personnel are beckoned to attend to an injured player, whether they enter the court or not, the player is subject to removal from the game unless the coach requests a time-out.</li>
 <li style="border: 0px;">If a player is bleeding or has blood on the uniform, Rule 3-3-7 now allows the player to remain in the game if the issue can be resolved in 20 seconds.</li>
 <li style="border: 0px;">A new exception to Rule 4-6-1 involving basket interference allows for the net to be contacted and play continue if the official determines the contact to not affect the try for a goal.</li>
 <li style="border: 0px;">A collection of changes to rules 4-47-5, 10-2-1g and 10-4-5 allows officials to issue a team warning for delay of game when a ball is not immediately passed to an official when a whistle sounds. Any subsequent violations now result in a team technical instead of a player technical.</li>
 <li style="border: 0px;">Rule 7-1-1 establishes that a player cannot be assisted by a team member or bench personnel outside the boundary line to remain inbounds.</li>
 <li style="border: 0px;">Pregame violations were addressed in a series of changes in Rule 10. If both teams violate provisions listed in Rules 10-1-1, 10-1-2 and 10-2-7 in equal numbers, the penalties offset, and no free throws are awarded. Additionally, the head coach would not lose the privilege of the coaching box. Similarly, the penalty for dunking or attempting to dunk a dead ball in Rule 10-2-7 no longer requires the coach to lose coaching box privileges and no personal foul is assessed as it is now a team technical and not a bench technical.</li>

 LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash; The Kansas men&rsquo;s golf team was selected to its eighth-straight NCAA Regional appearance on Wednesday. Head Coach Jamie Bermel and the Jayhawks will head to California for the Rancho Santa Fe Regional as the No. 11 seed, beginning May 13 and going through May 15.
 The selection marks the eighth-straight regional appearance for the Jayhawks, which is tied for the longest streak of consecutive regional appearances in program history. Kansas has done this on two other occasions from 1989-96 and 1998-2005. This is the longest streak of the 12-year Bermel era.
 The other teams in the regional include, (in seeded order): Arizona State, Washington, Oklahoma, California, Oklahoma State, North Florida, Chattanooga, South Florida, San Diego (host), West Virginia, Kansas, Wright State, Seton Hall and Winthrop.
 The top five teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort &amp; Spa Championship Course in Carlsbad, California, which begins May 24.

 Last season, Kansas finished ninth in the Norman Regional with a score of 858 (-6). Then-freshman Will King won an eight-hole playoff against Hugo Townsend of Ole Miss and finished fourth (-9) to advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk. King became the first Jayhawk since 2001 (Andy Stewart) to compete at Nationals as an individual.
 The Jayhawks&nbsp;were led this season by King and senior Cecil Belisle who both carry a sub-72.00 scoring average with King leading the team with a 71.88 average and Belisle following closely at 71.94. King and Belisle combined for three individual titles this season with Belisle winning two (Folds of Honor Collegiate and The Prestige), while King claimed medalist honors at the Gopher Invitational. The three titles are tied for the most in a season under the guidance of Bermel, tying the 2021-22 season.
 As a team, Kansas posted 10 finishes inside the Top 10, with three of those being inside the Top 5. Kansas&rsquo; best finish of the regular season came at The Prestige, February 19-21, where the team finished second amongst a 24-team field. The Jayhawks shot a 21-under 831 and were led by Belisle&rsquo;s medalist honors.

Pierson Ohl&nbsp;gave up his fifth home run of the season to Gavin Cross on a solo shot to right field in the bottom of the second inning. Wind Surge opponents have scored first in the last three games dating back to the series finale in San Antonio on Sunday, April 28.

The hosting Naturals brought in four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Cross doubled in a second RBI toward&nbsp;Kala’i Rosario&nbsp;in right field before River Town brought him home on a sacrifice fly to center field. ⚾ Wind Surge rally to win in Arkansas

TORONTO (AP) — Seth Lugo pitched seven strong innings to win for the fifth time in seven starts, Michael Massey hit a three-run home run and the Kansas City Royals beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 on Wednesday.

Bobby Witt Jr. had two hits, scored once and also drove in a run as the Royals won for the fifth time in seven meetings with Toronto.

Witt also turned in a highlight defensive play,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportsKC/status/1785772790953447504">making a sliding stop and throwing from one knee</a>&nbsp;to retire Bo Bichette for the final out of the sixth inning.

“That was a great play,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “Just to get something on that throw, once he got there, and to do it accurately to get a good runner, that was really impressive.”

Lugo was equally appreciative of Witt’s defensive effort.

“He wows me every day,” Lugo said. “I thought it was a base hit for sure. He’s awesome.”

Salvador Perez had an RBI single and extended his career-best streak of reaching base safely to 21 games. His .355 batting average and 27 RBIs lead the American League.

“He’s always fun to watch but what he’s doing right now is incredible,” Royals center fielder Kyle Isbel said. “I’ve never really seen anything like it. He’s barreling everything.”

Perez’s streak of reaching safely is the second-longest active streak in the majors behind Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich (23 games).

“Who knows where we’d be without him?,” Quatraro asked of Perez.

Massey homered off right-hander Nate Pearson in the eighth, his second in two games. He finished with four RBIs.

Lugo (5-1) allowed just one hit, Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s single in the first, until Toronto catcher Danny Jansen homered with two outs in the seventh. The solo blast was Jansen’s third of the season.

Lugo walked two and struck out eight. He lowered his ERA to 1.60.

“He’s putting together some of the best-pitched games that we’ve seen,” Quatraro said.

Chris Stratton worked the eighth and Nick Anderson finished.

Blue Jays right-hander Chris Bassitt (2-5) didn’t allow a hit through five innings, but had his outing unravel after Isbel doubled to begin the sixth.

“That was a huge at-bat by Izzy there to kind of break up (Bassitt’s) momentum,” Massey said. “He was nasty tonight.”

Maikel Garcia sacrificed Isbel to third and Witt followed with a tiebreaking single through the drawn-in infield.

Vinnie Pasquantino doubled, advancing Witt to third, and Perez made it 2-0 with another base hit through the infield. Massey’s RBI groundout capped the inning.

Bassitt lost his third straight start, allowing three runs and four hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out four.

The Royals used replay review to confirm that Perez was hit by a two-out pitch in the fourth inning. Massey struck out to end the frame.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider was upset that the umpires didn’t rule Perez had swung at the pitch.

“I think it was pretty obvious the ball hit him and it was even more obvious that he took a full swing,” Schneider said. “So, by the rules, he’s out. I thought that was a terrible call.”

Perez started at catcher for Kansas City. He was scratched from Monday’s start behind the plate but came on as a pinch hitter. Perez started at first base Tuesday.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer (2-1, 2.62) is scheduled to start Friday as Kansas City hosts Texas. RHP Michael Lorenzen (2-1, 4.24) goes for the Rangers.

Blue Jays: LHP Yusei Kikuchi (2-2, 294 ERA) is expected to start Friday as Toronto visits Washington for a three-game series.

&nbsp; LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — Nebraska's Jackson Brockett turned in the program's first nine-inning, no-hitter since 1954 to lead the Cornhuskers to an 8-0 victory over K-State Wednesday night at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.

"Brockett was unreal tonight for Nebraska," said K-State head coach&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/pete-hughes/2461">Pete Hughes</a>. "That was a pitching staff playing their fourth game in four days, which makes his performance even more impressive."

&nbsp; Brockett tossed nine no-hit innings to pick up the win in his career-long outing, as he struck out a career-high 12 and allowed just two walks (2-0). The win marked not only the lefty's first career complete game, but also his first career shutout.

&nbsp; "It was no fluke tonight. He kept us off balance all night. There was hardly a threat of a hit," Hughes said.

"Sometimes you need to get punched in the nose to put you back on the right track. Friday will be here before we know it and the appropriate reaction to tonight's result must be in play."

&nbsp; K-State (26-18), who was shut out for the third time of the season, held Nebraska to one run through four innings, until the Cornhuskers (28-15) scored seven runs in a four-inning span to put the game away.

The no-hit bid was the first time K-State was left without a hit since May 15, 2021, vs. Kansas.

&nbsp; Seven pitchers made an appearance on the mound for K-State with right-hander&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-wintroub/11539">Josh Wintroub</a>&nbsp;credited with the loss (2-3). The Littleton, Colo., product surrendered one run (unearned) on two hits with three strikeouts in his 2 1/3 inning start.&nbsp;&nbsp;

THE RUNDOWN Nebraska struck first in the opening frame as Riley Silva walked before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. The junior outfielder quickly crossed the plate, as a wild pitch got past the Cats' catcher to hand the Huskers the 1-0 lead.

With runners on first and second, a ground ball up the middle resulted in a double play to end the threat.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nebraska immediately responded in the bottom of the inning with four insurance runs, securing the win.

 LAWRENCE, Kan. &ndash; The Kansas men&rsquo;s golf team was selected to its eighth-straight NCAA Regional appearance on Wednesday. Head Coach Jamie Bermel and the Jayhawks will head to California for the Rancho Santa Fe Regional as the No. 11 seed, beginning May 13 and going through May 15.
 The selection marks the eighth-straight regional appearance for the Jayhawks, which is tied for the longest streak of consecutive regional appearances in program history. Kansas has done this on two other occasions from 1989-96 and 1998-2005. This is the longest streak of the 12-year Bermel era.
 The other teams in the regional include, (in seeded order): Arizona State, Washington, Oklahoma, California, Oklahoma State, North Florida, Chattanooga, South Florida, San Diego (host), West Virginia, Kansas, Wright State, Seton Hall and Winthrop.
 The top five teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa Resort &amp; Spa Championship Course in Carlsbad, California, which begins May 24.

 Last season, Kansas finished ninth in the Norman Regional with a score of 858 (-6). Then-freshman Will King won an eight-hole playoff against Hugo Townsend of Ole Miss and finished fourth (-9) to advance to the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk. King became the first Jayhawk since 2001 (Andy Stewart) to compete at Nationals as an individual.
 The Jayhawks&nbsp;were led this season by King and senior Cecil Belisle who both carry a sub-72.00 scoring average with King leading the team with a 71.88 average and Belisle following closely at 71.94. King and Belisle combined for three individual titles this season with Belisle winning two (Folds of Honor Collegiate and The Prestige), while King claimed medalist honors at the Gopher Invitational. The three titles are tied for the most in a season under the guidance of Bermel, tying the 2021-22 season.
 As a team, Kansas posted 10 finishes inside the Top 10, with three of those being inside the Top 5. Kansas&rsquo; best finish of the regular season came at The Prestige, February 19-21, where the team finished second amongst a 24-team field. The Jayhawks shot a 21-under 831 and were led by Belisle&rsquo;s medalist honors.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Former Hutchinson High School Salthawk and most recently Barton Cougar, Myles Thompson, has announced his commitment to continue his basketball and academic career at SIU-Edwardsville.&nbsp;

Thompson made the announcement Wednesday on X.

The 6-foot-7 redshirt sophomore from the Salt City averaged 14 points and seven rebounds in 37 appearances and 37 starts.&nbsp;

Thompson had a breakout national tournament appearance in the Sports Arena, averaging 20.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. He scored 20 or more points in three of the four games in the tournament, helping guide the Cougars to their first-ever national title.

He was selected as a first team all-conference selection, as well as on the all-tournament teams for the Region VI Tournament and the NJCAA National Tournament.

SIU-Edwardsville is located in Edwardsville, Illinois, and is an NCAA Division I school that participates in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Cougars are coached by former Butler Community College coach Brian Barone.

🏀 MBB: Former Salthawk Thompson commits to SIUE

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Six student-athletes at Hutchinson Community College signed the dotted line to continue their academic and athletic careers on Wednesday afternoon inside the Club 1928 Room at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Three members of the national champion HutchCC women's basketball team signed, including Monae Duffy (Texas A&amp;M-Corpus Christi), Bree Horyna (Nebraska Kearney) and Brynn McCormick (Sterling College).&nbsp;

MONAE DUFFY The 5-foot-11 sophomore from Lafayette, Louisiana appeared in 68 games in her Blue Dragon career, starting 67. Duffy averaged 11.8 points per game and 8.2 rebounds.&nbsp;

Texas A&amp;M-Corpus Christi is located in Corpus Christi, Texas and is an NCAA Division I school that participates in the Southland Conference.

BREE HORYNA The 5-foot-8 sophomore from Liberal, Kansas appeared in 68 career games, starting two. She averaged nearly four points and four rebounds.

Outdoor track and field season is underway and our week seven of KJCCC Athletes of the Week honors have been awarded.&nbsp;

KJCCC Men's Track Athlete of the Week: David Thid - Hutchinson CC

David Thid (Hutchinson) – Ran a time of 51.14 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Alex Francis Classic breaking the school record and currently ranks #1 in the NJCAA in the event.&nbsp;

Pitcher of the Week: Dakota Lake (Hutchinson)

Hutchinson freshman pitcher Dakota Lake went 2-0 with two complete games to help the Blue Dragons to a 4-0 week last week. Lake tied a career high with 13 strikeouts in a 7-inning complete game win over Garden City. She followed that with a three-shutout in a 5-inning 12-0 win over Barton in Great Bend. The league leader in strikeouts had seven strikeouts in the game vs. the Cougars.

KJCCC West Pitcher of the Week: Ethan Giesbrecht - Hutchinson Community College&nbsp; Blue Dragon sophomore starting pitcher Ethan Giesbrecht became the first Blue Dragon pitcher to reach nine wins in a season since 2014 and help the Blue Dragons clinch a Jayhawk West championship in a Game 1 win over Barton last week. Giesbrecht three five innings of one-hit shutout baseball in a 7-2 league-clinching victory over Barton. He struck out four and walked two in pushing his season record to 9-2.&nbsp;&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The annual Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, May 3 at Carey Park with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
