MCPHERSON, Kan. - The Huth High Salthawk Girls basketball team jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the first quarter, then poured it on in the second quarter to leave no doubt of who was going to capture 3rd place in the 30th annual Miherson Lady Bull Pups on Saturday afternoon in McPherson.
"She's back...." Yes she is and that answer to who's "she" is Kaia Smith who missed last Monday's loss to Maize South due to have wisdom teeth removed. In both Thursday's first round win over Dodge City and Friday nights semi-final loss to eventual MAC Champ Olathe South, you could tell the Smith was not her old 16.9 points, 10 rebounds per game self. But jump forward to Saturday afternoon when Smith turned in a 17 point, 7 rebound and 5 assists game in the win over McPherson.
Joining Smith in scoring for the Salthawks was Grace Posh with 14, Kohlbie Craft 6, and Lynnea Alvarez with 5. In addition, Ava Krone had 4 block shots as the Salthawk defense was really special.
McPherson was led by Karlie Cooper with 7th points, all from the charity line and all in the 4th quarter. Elle Bower and Brynn Littlejohn added 5 points each.
Hutch rolls to 7-4 on the year with two key league games coming up this week at home versus Maize South on Tuesday and Salina South on Friday for Pack-the-SAC night where elementary school age kids get in free with a non-perishable food donation plus a free Salthawk T-shirt. The winning school that brings the most food items plus attendance will be treated to a pizza party by the Hutch High Athletic department.
In addition, the ICT Aerobelle Granny Basketball team will be present at half-time of the boys game to put on a "Granny" basketball exhibition on how the game was played way back when.
