The decision left a proposal from Brazil and a joint Germany-Netherlands-Belgium plan competing to be picked for 2027 by the FIFA Congress that meets May 17 in Bangkok. The USSF said the 2031 bid will call for FIFA to invest equally in the men's and women's World Cups. FIFA said last year it planned to spend $896 million in prize money for the 2026 World Cup after devoting $110 million for last year's women's tournament.

The play happened with about 2:35 left in the second quarter. Porzingis took a dribble as he tried to move to his left, then pulled up — without any visible contact on the play — and immediately motioned to the Boston bench. He was subbed out eight seconds later and went directly to the Celtics' locker room, stopping along the way to pull the top of his jersey over his face.

Gunnar Henderson becomes youngest player to hit 10 homers before May 1 as Orioles defeat Yankees 2-0

BALTIMORE (AP) — Gunnar Henderson led off the first inning with a homer to become the youngest player in major league history with 10 home runs before May 1 and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 2-0 in the opener of a four-game series. Grayson Rodriguez threw 5 2/3 shutout innings for Baltimore, which won the first meeting of the season between the top teams in the AL East. New York left 10 runners on base and was 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Henderson's home run off Clarke Schmidt tied him with the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout for the major league lead.

TORONTO (AP) — Justin Turner hit two home runs, Danny Jansen added a solo homer and the Toronto Blue Jays held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-5 on Monday night.

Turner hit a two-run home run in the first inning and had a leadoff homer in the third. The homers were his third and fourth. It was the 16th multihomer game of his career.

Jansen also connected in the third, his second.

The Blue Jays scored more than five runs for the first time in 21 games, ending a streak that dated back to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/yankees-blue-jays-score-26df01230f38e755b29c9e6488414d3f">a 9-8 loss at Yankee Stadium</a>&nbsp;on April 6.

“The best sign was the quality of contact and the amount of balls we kept off the ground,” Turner said. “We’ve been hitting a lot of hard balls but beating them into the ground and not getting any results. I think tonight was probably our best game of the year of having quality contact. That was good to see.”

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had two hits and drove in a run as Toronto won back-to-back games after losing the previous five.

The Blue Jays won for the first time in 12 games this season when their opponent scores at least five runs.

Royals&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/salvador-perez-tight-back-royals-f7d1c7ab666f89964c5d1ab2742bc41f">catcher Salvador Perez was scratched</a>&nbsp;from the starting lineup because of a tight back but delivered a pinch-hit single with two out in the ninth. “His back tightened up a little bit earlier in the day, but he worked on it throughout the game and he said he was 100% there at the end,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Perez.

The save was Pearson’s first of the season. He finished for Toronto on a night that regular closer Jordan Romano and fellow right-hander Yimi Garcia were both unavailable.

“They have power arms throughout,” Quatraro said of Toronto’s deep bullpen. “I mean, Pearson is not a bad option throwing 100 miles per hour coming in in the ninth inning.”

Kyle Isbel homered and drove in two runs but the Royals lost their third straight. Freddy Fermin also homered for Kansas City, his first.

Recalled from Triple-A Omaha to make his second career start, Royals right-hander Jonathan Bowlan (0-1) allowed four runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings, including three home runs.

“The mistakes got hit at the end of the day,” Bowlan said. “I wasn’t pounding the zone how I would have liked and when you fall behind, stuff like this happens.”

Blue Jays right-hander Yariel Rodríguez allowed three runs and six hits in 3 2/3 innings but left with the bases loaded. Génesis Cabrera came on and retired Vinnie Pasquantino to escape the jam.

Cabrera (1-0) got four outs for the victory.

Isbel’s homer, his third, came off right-hander Trevor Richards in the sixth.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Over 70 kids attended the  Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Hutchinson’s 2024 Skills Combine, despite the curveball from Mother Nature. 

There were events inside the HutchCC football facility that focused on speed &amp; agility and once the weather cleared the kids went out and held one on one drills. 

Players enjoyed autographs and a photo opportunity with HCC Players and with Washington Commanders player and former Blue Dragon Mitchell Tinsley. 

Players &amp; parents were able to see first-hand the spectacular facility and program that Coach Drew Dallas has in Hutchinson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

🏈 Combine big success despite weather

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed Travis Kelce to a two-year contract extension Monday that general manager Brett Veach said would make him the league’s highest-paid tight end while keeping him with the Super Bowl champions through the 2027 season.

Kelce signed a four-year, $57.25 million extension with Kansas City in 2020, which followed a $46 million, five-year deal that he signed in 2016. The new extension would keep the 34-year-old Kelce with the club until he is 38 years old.

Veach did not provide a financial breakdown of the latest extension, but he did call it a priority to “adjust his contract” and that “it is very fitting that Travis is now the highest-paid tight end in these two years.”

“Hard to put into words what Travis means to this organization and this city,” Veach told local reporters on Zoom. “Just a really special day and moment for this organization to once again recognize arguably one of the greatest tight ends to ever do it.”

Kelce, who was chosen by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2013 draft, already is their career leader with 11,328 yards receiving. He needs eight receptions to reach 917 and pass Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez for that record, and three touchdown catches would give him 77, dropping Gonzalez to No. 2 on that franchise list.

Most importantly, Kelce has helped Kansas City win back-to-back Super Bowls and three titles in the past five years.

“Every now and then you have one of these guys that are outliers,” Veach said, “and Travis is one of those players. It’s not even May yet and today we had a chance to get out there in phase two (off the offseason) and Travis was the first one in line.”

It’s not just on the field where Kelce is a star, either.

His relationship with pop icon Taylor Swift has taken him to another level of celebrity, while appearances on shows such as “Saturday Night Live” have helped to make him a household name. He hosts one of the most popular podcasts across several genres with his brother and former Eagles center Jason Kelce, and he will soon host a quiz show on Amazon Prime.

But it all began on the field, where Kelce has long been considered one of the best tight ends in the game.

He missed the season opener with a knee injury last season, and he skipped the regular-season finale when the Chiefs already were assured of their playoff seeding. Those two games cost him the chance to extend his streak of 1,000-yard seasons to eight; he finished with 984 yards on 93 catches with five touchdown receptions.

When the postseason rolled around, Kelce once again took his performance to another level.

He had seven catches for 71 yards in a wild-card win over Miami, the fourth-coldest game in NFL history. He had five catches for 75 yards and two scores in a divisional win in Buffalo. He had 11 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown in the AFC title game in Baltimore, and capped it all with nine catches for 93 yards in the Super Bowl against San Francisco.

Along the way, Kelce batted down rumors of retirement, saying: “I have no reason to stop playing football. I love it.”

“The odds of someone playing this far into their 30s is low,” Veach acknowledged, “but it does happen. There are unicorns in the profession and Travis is one of those. He’s shown no signs of slowing down.”

The extension for Kelce comes one week after the Chiefs announced they had signed Veach, coach Andy Reid team president Mark Donovan to contract extensions. The team did not say how long those deals would last, but they are expected to keep the three most central leadership figures with the franchise through the 2029 season.

Patrick Mahomes, whom Kelce considers one of his closest friends, is under contract through the 2031 season. All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, the third piece of their three-player core, signed a five-year, $158.75 million deal in March.

Along with rewarding Kelce for his continued superlative play, Veach pointed to several young players who will be due contract extensions in the next couple of years as another reason for getting the tight end’s long-term situation sorted out.

“We do have some younger guys coming up and like always, once the draft settles down, we’ll have a chance to address that,” he said. “Travis is an outlier here. We all know that. When you talk about Travis and his career and his legacy here, this is something we wanted to knock out of the park early on and shift our focus onto the young guys coming up.”

🏈 Chiefs sign All-Pro TE Travis Kelce to a 2-year extension through 2027 season

Four former Hutchinson Community College football players have signed undrafted free agent contracts with NFL teams after this past weekend’s NFL Draft in Detroit.

Defensive back Ro Torrence has signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Defensive lineman Tramel Walthouer has signed with Baltimore Ravens. Defensive lineman Rodney Matthews has signed with the Green Bay Packers and Isaiah Iton has signed with the Tennessee Titans.

These four players are the 48th, 49th, 50th and 51st former Blue Dragons to be drafted or signed as undrafted free agents in the program’s history.

After Hutchinson, Torrence originally transferred to Auburn University and then to Arizona State before going to the 2024 NFL Combine and ultimately signing with the Seattle Seahawks.

With the Blue Dragons, all Torrence did was win 2020-21 National Defensive Player of the Year honors and help Hutchinson win a national championship.

The Bessemer, Alabama native helped produce a defense that ranked No. 3 in scoring defense and No. 7 in total defense in the nation in the 2020-21 Covid-challenged spring season and helped the No. 1-ranked Blue Dragons defeat No. 2 Snow College 29-27 in the NJCAA Championship Game on June 5 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Torrence had a huge second-quarter interception in the championship game when the Blue Dragons were trailing 14-3. For the game, Torrence had three total tackles and the interception in the championship contest.

Torrence didn’t post the huge overall numbers one might associate with this honor. His numbers simply don’t tell the entire story of Torrence’s tremendous sophomore season, but they do speak volumes to the respect opposing teams gave him throughout the 2020-21 season.

Torrence had 26 total tackles in eight games started this season. Torrence broke up five passes with one interception During the regular season, Torrence was hardly targeted over the final five games of the regular season, thus cutting the field in half for opposing offenses.

Torrence is the third Blue Dragon to originally sign with the Seahawks, joining Claude George (2013-14, UDFA in 2017) and B.J. Emmons (2017, UDFA, 2020).

TRAMEL WALTHOUR – Baltimore Ravens

Walthour played one season for the Blue Dragons in 2018 where he garnered 16 total tackles and a quarterback sack in 10 games for Hutchinson.

Walthour spent five seasons at the University of Georgia. He played in 13 games last season while starting in five of them. He finished his career with 49 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. He helped the Bulldogs win back-to-back national titles throughout his career.

Walthouer is the fourth Blue Dragon to start his career in the Ravens’ organization. The others are Phil Hawkins (2001, UDFA 2024); Meshak Williams (2009-10, UDFA 2013) and Jonathan White (2019, UDFA 2023).

RODNEY MATTHEWS – Green Bay Packers

Matthews was a defensive tackle for the Blue Dragons in the 2019 seasons, where he earned all-Jayhawk Conference honors. Matthews played in 10 games for the Blue Dragons had had 19 total tackles with 2.5 quarterback sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss as a Blue Dragon.

Matthews moved on to Ohio University where he played in 41 games. Matthews had 71 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. He snagged his first career interception during Ohio's historic victory over the Iowa State Cyclones (Sept. 16, 2023).&nbsp;

Matthews joins a long just of former Blue Dragons to start with the Packers. The others are Kevin Barry (1997-98, UDFA 2002), Angelo Pease (2011, UDFA 2013), Caliph Brice (2017-18, UDFA 2021); Devonte Wyatt (2019; 1st-round 2022).

Iton never played a game for the Blue Dragons but was with the team in the fall of 2020, the Covid pandemic season. After taking care of his course work at HutchCC, Iton transferred to the University of Mississippi and ultimately to Rutgers University for the 2023 season.

Iton started all 13 games last season after transferring from Ole Miss. He had 38 tackles and one sack.

Iton is the third Blue Dragon to start his professional career with the Titans, joining Jason Gamble (1994-95, UDFA in 1997) and Toby Johnson (2012-13, UDFA in 2015).

Ben Ross&nbsp;came through for his first hit of the series on a run-scoring double to the gap in right center in the top of the fifth that scored&nbsp;Jake Rucker&nbsp;and tied the game at one.

The Missions regained and improved their lead to 3-1 after a pair of RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings against&nbsp;Aaron Rozek&nbsp;and&nbsp;John Stankiewicz. After&nbsp;Jeferson Morales&nbsp;reached on a walk to begin the top of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, the following three Wichita hitters struck out to end the game.

The Wind Surge split the series with the Missions in the Lone Star State. Rozek received his first loss of the year after surrendering an earned run on four hits and two walks in three and two-thirds innings of relief.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt has announced that former Chiefs Linebacker/Defensive End Tamba Hali will be the 2024 inductee into the Chiefs Hall of Fame. Hali is the 53rd individual and 49th player to earn this coveted honor. The official enshrinement ceremony into the Chiefs Hall of Fame will be held during Chiefs Legends Weekend at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium this fall.

"My family and I are thrilled to announce Tamba Hali as this year's inductee into the Chiefs Hall of Fame," Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. "From the day we drafted Tamba in 2006, he has inspired our fans with electrifying performances on the field and outstanding character off the field. Throughout his illustrious career, Tamba was respected and admired by his teammates, as he moved from defensive end to outside linebacker in his fourth season and quickly became a Pro Bowler. His stats speak for themselves, establishing him as one of the great defensive players in Chiefs history. And he is perhaps even more impressive off the field. Tamba's remarkable personal journey has molded a man of integrity, resilience and determination. Hali spent his entire 12-year career in Kansas City (2006-17), appearing in 177 games, the fourth most by any Chiefs defender in franchise history. He made 157 starts, tied for the sixth-most by any player in Chiefs history. Hali was named to the 2006 NFL All-Rookie Team, was selected to the Pro Bowl five straight seasons from 2011-15 and was named to the AP All-Pro second-team twice (2011 and 2013). Hali was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week four times in his career, tied for the second most by any Chiefs defender.

He stands as one of the most prolific pass rushers in Chiefs history. His 89.5 sacks for -591.5 yards are both second only to PFHOF LB Derrick Thomas in Chiefs history. The total includes 8.0 sacks his rookie season, the third most for a rookie in franchise history. He was also relentless when it came to punching the ball out of the opponent's grasp. With 33 career forced fumbles he is second, again to only Thomas, for the most in forced fumbles Chiefs history. His six forced fumbles in his rookie season were a franchise rookie record and are tied for fourth-most in a season in Chiefs history.

After recording 8.0 sacks his rookie year, he would go on to match or exceed that total six times in his career, tied for the second-most seasons with 8.0 or more sacks in franchise history. He recorded a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2010 and reached double-digit sacks three times in his career (2010, 2011 and 2013), a mark only Thomas and Chiefs Hall of Fame DE Neil Smith have reached more times. He recorded 3.0 sacks in a game on three separate occasions, one of just five Chiefs to reach that mark three or more times.

Hali entered the NFL as a first-round pick of the Chiefs (20th overall) in 2006. He played collegiately at Penn State University from 2002-05. He played in 47 total games during his four seasons in State College, Pennsylvania, totaling 179 tackles (84 solo) and 14.0 sacks. His college career was highlighted by his senior campaign when he recorded 65 tackles (27 solo) which included 11.0 sacks and 17 tackles for loss, both of which were the top mark in the Big Ten for the season. As impactful as Hali was on the field, his influence reached even further in his off-the-field efforts. Hali, the Chiefs 2014 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year nominee, was born in Liberia in 1983, a country that was thrown into civil war while he was a child. He fled the country and came to the United States when he was 10 years old but has never forgotten his roots. Throughout the years he has used his position and platform to spread awareness of the needs in West Africa. His dedication to the area has not stopped at words alone as he has donated tens-of-thousands of dollars to causes in the region. In 2014 he donated $50,000 to construct a 70-bed Ebola treatment unit as the disease devastated communities in the region.

Along with his work abroad, Hali has given back to the communities that have supported him along his football journey. In Kansas City he partnered with the Bishop Sullivan Center to purchase and serve meals, focusing on sustainable food made with healthy ingredients. He went above and beyond for the families affiliated with the service organizations helping provide furniture, clothing and other necessities to those in need. Hali has also given back generously to his alma mater, Teaneck High School, in New Jersey. Among other initiatives, he has donated shoes for the entire football program, financed the school's freshman football team with a $15,000 gift and gave $40,000 to complete upgrades to facilities and build the school's Athletics Hall of Fame.

Hali's contributions to the community didn't stop with his retirement, he continues to reach out a hand of service today. He serves on the board of directors at Literacy KC, an organization aimed at advancing literacy within the Kansas City metropolitan area through direct services, advocacy and collaboration. He is also an active member of the Kansas City Ambassadors, a group which focuses on and participates in a wide variety of philanthropic endeavors.

From his time as a dominant force rushing the quarterback to his current role spreading the message of the Kingdom with a heart of service, Hali – still a resident of the Kansas City metro – exemplifies what it means to be a Chiefs Hall of Famer through and through.

DETROIT (AP) — Wenceel Pérez hit a two-run drive for his first major league homer, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Sunday.

“He hit one to the track last night,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “I guess he did a couple extra pushups this morning.”

Jake Rogers also homered for the Tigers, who have won five of seven. It was Detroit's 10th come-from-behind win of the season.

The Royals have lost two in a row after a four-game winning streak.

“I don't think we drove a ball after the first inning until maybe the seventh,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We couldn't square them up.”

Detroit left-hander Tarik Skubal (4-0) pitched seven innings of one-run ball.

“He gave up a seeing-eye double and a two-strike base hit in the first, but he got another gear after that,” Hinch said. “That's what you expect from a guy who is going to anchor your rotation.”

Skubal struck out six while improving to 2-7 with a 4.65 ERA in 12 career games against the Royals.

“We knew coming in it was going to be a challenge. He's one of the best pitchers in the league,” Quatraro said. “Upper-90s velocity, location, plus changeup, curveball — you name it.”

Jason Foley pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

Royals right-hander Michael Wacha (1-3) permitted four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Kansas City took a 1-0 lead on Bobby Witt Jr.'s RBI single in the first, but Pérez put Detroit in front with a drive to right in the bottom half.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone,” said Pérez, who is hitting .286 since making his major league debut on April 8. “And when we give (Skubal) a lead, the game is done. We know he's going to do the job.”

The Tigers made it 3-1 in the second when Rogers singled, took third on Parker Meadows' double and scored on Riley Greene's sacrifice fly.

Rogers added his second homer of the season in the sixth, and Skubal stranded runners on first and third in the seventh.

“We were probably a little fastball heavy early in the game, but then he was really dominant with the changeup,” said Rogers, who has caught all of Skubal's starts this season.

Kansas City's Salvador Perez walked in the ninth, extending his on-base streak to 18 games.

OG Anunoby added 16 points and 14 rebounds, and took on some of the defensive assignment against Joel Embiid in the fourth quarter as the Knicks moved within a victory of getting to the Eastern Conference semifinals for the second straight year. Denny Hamlin holds off Larson late to win NASCAR Cup race at Dover Motor Speedway

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Denny Hamlin held off a hard-charging Kyle Larson over the final, thrilling laps and wiggled through lapped traffic to win the NASCAR Cup race by about a quarter of a second Sunday at Dover Motor Speedway. Hamlin's third win of the season tied William Byron for most this season in the series. Hamlin also picked up his 54th career Cup win, all with Joe Gibbs Racing. Pacers hit franchise playoff best 22 3-pointers to beat Bucks 126-113 and take 3-1 lead in series

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Myles Turner scored 29 points, Tyrese Haliburton added 24 and the Indiana Pacers made a franchise playoff record 22 3-pointers as they pulled away from the Milwaukee Bucks 126-113. Indiana leads the best-of-seven series 3-1 and can close out the Bucks with a Game 5 win Tuesday at Milwaukee. The Pacers are 7-2 this season against the Bucks. Turner also had nine rebounds and four assists against a Bucks squad that was missing two injured All-Stars, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. Brook Lopez led the Bucks with 27 points and nine rebounds, and Khris Middleton added 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. But Milwaukee never led in the second half.

Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray's status in jeopardy for Game 5 vs. Lakers because of calf injury

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets on Sunday listed point guard Jamal Murray as questionable for Game 5 against the Los Angeles Lakers because of a strained left calf. Murray was seen nursing the calf in the fourth quarter of the Nuggets' loss in Los Angeles on Saturday night that snapped Denver's 11-game winning streak over LeBron James and the Lakers. Murray missed 23 games during the regular season with a variety of leg ailments but the calf strain is a new problem that popped up in Game 4.

🥎 Jayhawks drop finale at No. 4 Oklahoma State

WICHITA, Kan.&nbsp; — Wichita State and Tulane split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Eck Stadium, with Wichita State winning the opener 6-3 in seven innings and the Green Wave claiming the second game, 10-4.

&nbsp; The Shockers got an excellent start from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/caden-favors/7628">Caden Favors</a>&nbsp;(6-4), who pitched into the seventh inning while allowing just two hits. The southpaw retired the first nine Tulane hitters, during which time Wichita State was able to build a 5-0 lead.&nbsp;

<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/jordan-rogers/7538">Jordan Rogers</a>&nbsp;slammed a solo home run in the bottom of the first to open the scoring, then WSU struck for four runs in the third.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/mauricio-millan/7532">Mauricio Millan</a>&nbsp;made it 2-0 with an RBI ground out and&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/josh-livingston/7602">Josh Livingston</a>&nbsp;followed with a two-out, three-run homer to left-center to blow the game open against Tulane starter Chandler Welch (5-2).&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; The Green Wave cut into the lead with an RBI single from Teo Banks in the fourth, but Favors responded with consecutive scoreless innings to keep the lead at 5-1.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/lane-haworth/7609">Lane Haworth</a>&nbsp;added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a run-scoring single, stretching the advantage to 6-1.

&nbsp; That insurance proved crucial as Tulane used two walks and two singles to pull within 6-3 with the tying run at the plate in the form of Brady Marget.&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/hunter-holmes/8976">Hunter Holmes</a>&nbsp;was summoned from the Wichita State bullpen and retired Marget on a chopper to&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/kam-durnin/7604">Kam Durnin</a>&nbsp;at shortstop to nail down his second save of the season.

Rogers once again put the Shockers on top with an early homer, launching a two-run shot in the bottom of the third to give WSU the game's first lead at 2-0. But Tulane responded with four runs of their own in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-out, three-run homer from Banks that put the Green Wave on top, 4-2.

Tulane added two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to lengthen the advantage to 7-2.

The Shockers had a chance to make things interesting in the bottom of the eighth, getting an RBI single from Livingston and a run-scoring double from&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/camden-johnson/7605">Camden Johnson</a>&nbsp;to trim the deficit to 7-4 with runners at second and third and nobody out. Tulane closer Jacob Moore was able to retire the next three hitters without a run scoring, then pitched around three more baserunners in the ninth to secure his fifth save.

Wichita State stranded 13 baserunners in the contest.

&nbsp; Tulane reliever Michael Lombardi (3-3) earned the win with 2.1 scoreless innings out of the Green Wave bullpen, while WSU starter&nbsp;<a href="https://goshockers.com/sports/baseball/roster/tommy-lapour/7600">Tommy LaPour</a>&nbsp;(3-2) took the loss, allowing six hits and six runs over five-plus innings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Jayhawks, who now have four weekend series sweeps this season, improved to 25-15 overall and 12-9 in Big 12 Conference play. KU has won four Big 12 series this season for the first time since the 2017 season and currently sit tied for fourth place in the 13-team league.
Right-hander Ethan Lanthier shined out of the bullpen, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings, to earn the win for the third consecutive Sunday. John Nett, who extended his hitting streak to 18 games, hit a solo home run in the victory and Kodey Shojinaga had a bases-clearing double to cap off a five-run fourth inning for the Jayhawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED &bull; Texas Tech (29-17, 12-12 Big 12) took a two-run lead for a third straight day. On Sunday, the Red Raiders took the lead in the third inning. Gavin Kash had an RBI single and Damian Bravo hit an RBI triple to put Texas Tech ahead. &bull; Kansas cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the third inning. Nett crushed a solo home run to left field to make it a 2-1 game. &bull; The Jayhawks stringed together a five-run fourth inning to take the lead. All five runs scored were with two outs. Kansas loaded the bases and Nett and Jake English each drew bases loaded walks. After a Texas Tech pitching change, Shojinaga drilled a bases-clearing double to the right center gap. That gave Kansas a 6-2 lead. &bull; KU added another run in the bottom of the fifth as Collier Cranford came into score on a throwing error. Kansas led 7-2 at the end of the fifth. &bull; The Red Raiders got a run in the eighth inning on a two-out RBI single by Cade McGee to make it 7-3. &bull; Hunter Cranton came on to finish the game and struck out the side in the ninth.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—The Wichita Wind Surge tallied double-digit hits for the third consecutive night in their third straight road win on a 5-3 score over the San Antonio Missions.

Ben Ross&nbsp;brought home&nbsp;Carson McCusker&nbsp;in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly to center to start the scoring for Wichita on Saturday night. The Missions tied the game on a run-scoring groundout two frames later in the bottom of the fourth.

Jorel Ortega&nbsp;doubled to lead off the top of the fifth over a leaping Cole Cummings in right field.&nbsp;Tanner Schobel&nbsp;later hit the ball into the wind out toward right field, which dropped for a triple that scored Ortega.&nbsp;Andrew Cossetti&nbsp;followed with a long ground-rule double that the wind kept in the ballpark in left field for Schobel to cross home plate. A wild pitch in the last of the fifth for San Antonio cut the lead to a one-run deficit at 3-2.

Two more runs for Wichita came in the top of the seventh.&nbsp;Jeferson Morales&nbsp;pushed a sacrifice fly the opposite way to right field to allow Ortega to score for the second time on the night. Schobel matched his teammate in runs scored after scampering in on a wild pitch.

San Antonio didn’t go down quietly after cutting the deficit from three runs to two on a single in the bottom of the eighth. The Missions later had the tying run at the plate down to their final out in the ninth before&nbsp;Jared Solomon&nbsp;struck out Ray-Patrick Didder to end the ballgame.

Jaylen Nowlin&nbsp;earned his second win of the year to move to 2-1 on the season as Solomon records the first Wind Surge save after four previous attempts. The Wichita pitching staff collectively held Missions batters to a 2-for-15 (.134) night with runners in scoring position.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs plan to explore options that include leaving Arrowhead Stadium after voters in Jackson County, Missouri, soundly rejected a sales tax initiative that would have helped to pay for renovations to the 52-year-old building.

The Chiefs and Royals, whose Kauffman Stadium shares the Truman Sports Complex with the football stadium, have relied on a three-eighths cent sales tax for upkeep. The franchises wanted to extend that tax with the Royals using their share of the money for a new downtown ballpark and the Chiefs envisioning an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead.

More than 58% of voters rejected the sales tax initiative after the campaign was met with criticism from all sides.

“Time is short for us at this point and so we need to see what other options are out there for us,″ Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said Saturday. “When we started on this process three years ago, it felt like we had a very long time — a long runway with about 9 1/2 (years) left on our lease. We’re now down to 6 1/2 and so I do feel very much of a sense of urgency."

Hunt, whose father Lamar founded the Chiefs and helped to get Kauffman and Arrowhead stadiums built, has always preferred to renovate a stadium that his father called one of his favorite places in the world. The Hunt family had promised to spend $300 million in private funds on the renovation with the remainder coming from public funding.

One of those could be just across the state line, where public officials in Kansas have made it clear that they would love to have the Chiefs on their side of the border.“Stadium development projects just take a long time," Hunt said, “and I don’t want to put a specific number on it, but with only 6 1/2 years left on the lease, we’re going to have to work very hard over the next year, year-and-a-half.”Whatever direction the Chiefs go next, Hunt indicated they would head that way on their own, rather than be tied together with the Royals. That would give the NFL franchise greater latitude to seek the best financing package for itself, whether that means with a renovation of Arrowhead Stadium in mind or a completely new facility elsewhere.“There’s certainly nothing to preclude us coming back and doing something together," Hunt said, "but (Royals owner John Sherman) also feels that sense of urgency and I know he’s eager to try to find a long-term solution, which we are as well.”
