Saturday night's game will be Cancer Awareness Night with all proceeds from the silent auction to 50/50 raffle going to the Cancer Council of Reno County.

The Monarchs are back for their 16th season of play in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Ludvig Aberg might be playing in his first U.S. Open. But the sensational Swede is certainly no stranger to the big stage. He shot a 69 in the second round at Pinehurst No. 2 and goes into the weekend with a one-shot lead. Aberg already has been runner-up in the Masters and played in the Ryder Cup in the year since leaving college at Texas Tech. He leads by one over Bryson DeChambeau, Thomas Detry and Patrick Cantlay. Scottie Scheffler made the cut on the number after his first birdie-free round in two years. Tiger Woods missed the cut.

He hasn't had any round without a birdie in just over two years. It led to a 74 and left him outside the cut line with the afternoon taking on extremely hot conditions. Most of the damage came one one hole. Scheffler hit driver and a 3-wood just left of the green into a sandy area. That's where his problems started. It took three shots to get on the green and he made double bogey.

Florida Panthers are calm and businesslike on the verge of winning the Stanley Cup in a sweep

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Florida Panthers are calm and collected on the verge of ending the NHL season and winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. Players are approaching Game 4 against the Edmonton Oilers like it's Game 44 of the regular season. That businesslike approach and the experience of facing elimination in the final last year against Vegas have them poised to finish off the sweep on the road Saturday night. The league has not had a 4-0 Stanley Cup Final since Detroit swept Washington in 1998 to go back to back.

MLB umpire Pat Hoberg appealing discipline following sports betting investigation

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball plans to discipline umpire Pat Hoberg following an investigation into a potential violation of sports gambling policies. In a statement Friday, the commissioner's office said Hoberg has decided to appeal the penalty. MLB did not disclose the nature of the violation or the extent of the punishment. MLB said its probe "did not find any evidence that games worked by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or manipulated in any way," but the league determined that "discipline was warranted." MLB said it could not comment further until the appeal process is completed. MLB says it began investigating Hoberg during spring training this year and he was removed from the field while the probe was ongoing.

Charles Barkley said Friday that next season will be his last on TV, no matter what happens with the NBA's media deals.

DALLAS (AP) The Hall of Fame player has spent the last 24 years working as a studio analyst for TNT, which could lose the rights to broadcast NBA after next season.

But no matter where the games end up, Barkley won't be following.

“There’s been a lot of noise around our network the last few months and I just want to say I’ve talked to all the other networks, but I ain’t going nowhere other than TNT,” Barkley said while working on NBA TV's NBA Finals postgame show.

The NBA's current deals with ABC-ESPN and Turner Sports expire after next season and the league has been talking with NBC, ESPN and Amazon, among other networks and platforms, about what comes next. Commissioner Adam Silver said last week he hopes new long-term deals&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-finals-adam-silver-tv-deal-875bf686fac9462bc5b180b20480bb9f?utm_source=copy&amp;utm_medium=share">will be completed shortly</a>.

Barkley and broadcast teammates Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith have discussed their uncertain future on their popular “Inside the NBA” studio show. Barkley would seemingly draw interest from any network televising NBA, but the 61-year-old has decided that 25 years will be enough and he will “pass the baton,” hopefully, to a TNT teammate such as Vince Carter or Jamal Crawford.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Monarchs got a solid 5 innings of relief from Josia Ross to edge the Wichita Diamond Kings 3-1 Friday night at Hobart-Detter. 

The same two teams will play tonight with first pitch at 7 p.m. 

Tonight is cancer awareness night proceeds go to Cancer Council of Reno County come on out and support a great cause.

⚾ Monarchs win Friday; tonight is Cancer Council night

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freddie Freeman lined a go-ahead, two-out RBI single into center in the eighth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Friday night.

Mookie Betts singled, took second on an errant pickoff throw by reliever Will Smith (0-3) and scored on Freeman’s hit.

Daniel Hudson (3-1) got the win with a scoreless inning of relief and Alex Vesia pitched the ninth to earn his third save.

The Royals had the tying run at first with two outs in the ninth on a single by pinch hitter Nelson Velazquez, but Nick Loftin flied out to end it.

The Dodgers tied the game 3-3 with two outs in the fifth with offense from the bottom half of the lineup.

Miguel Rojas hit a two-run homer just inside the left-field foul pole and one batter later Chris Taylor went deep to tie it up. It was Taylor's first homer since Sept. 7.

“It was more relief than anything,” said Taylor, who came in hitting .100. "I definitely have my moments of frustration. Just trying to embrace the process and trust that my work's eventually going to come through for me."

The Dodgers are 19-0 when Rojas gets a hit.

“Not playing every day is kind of like a challenge, but at the end of the day the biggest key for me is facing every game like it’s a playoff game,” Rojas said.

Visiting Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2017, the Royals made themselves right at home.

Salvador Perez blasted a 437-foot homer that came off his bat at 113.3 mph, traveling most of the way up the left-field pavilion in the fourth. Maikel Garcia singled, took second on Bobby Witt Jr.’s groundout and moved to third on Gavin Stone’s wild pitch. Vinnie Pasquantino walked to set up Perez, who made it 3-0.

Witt Jr., who came in with a .330 average, went 0 for 4 on his 24th birthday. He made a nifty over-the-shoulder catch of Andy Pages, threw to second and Loftin fired to first to complete the Royals' second double play of the game in the seventh.

Dodgers starter Stone allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Royals starter Cole Ragans gave up three runs and seven hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.

The Dodgers improved to 16-1 at home against the Royals, who were swept in their last visit.

Royals: INF-OF Adam Frazier was activated from the bereavement list.

Dodgers: RHP Bobby Miller (shoulder) will start Wednesday at Colorado.

Kansas City traded minor league catcher Logan Porter to the San Francisco Giants for cash or a player to be named later.

Royals: RHP Seth Lugo (9-2, 2.36 ERA) starts Saturday coming off his first loss since April 21. He's allowed nine runs in 13 innings over his last two starts.

Dodgers: RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-2, 3.00) goes Saturday after having his scheduled Thursday start pushed back for extra rest.

West Texas A&amp;M will host the championship at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium in Canyon, TX.&nbsp;The state-of-the-art stadium opened in 2019 and has been regarded as one of the best stadiums in NCAA Division II football.

"I am pleased that West Texas will host the NJCAA Division I Football National Championships for the next four years in our acclaimed Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium in the heart of our campus," said Walter V. Wendler, West Texas A&amp;M University President. The Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium seats 8,500 with an estimated total capacity of 12,000 when including overflow berm seating and standing-room-only space at the concourse level. The stadium features a video scoreboard structure, a ribbon board system, and a concourse that provides full circulation for patrons around the stadium. Along with great features around the stadium, the field itself is a Hellas Cushdrain field which helps reduce the impact on the head during tackles creating a safer game.

Luke Keaschall&nbsp;smoked his first Wind Surge home run over the fence in left field in the bottom of the first. The solo shot is Keaschall’s seventh leadoff home run of the season between Cedar Rapids and Wichita.

Cooper Bowman tied the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Ben Ross. Jorel Ortega scampered home on a wild pitch in the home half of the frame, followed by back-to-back run-scoring singles by&nbsp;Jake Rucker&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jeferson Morales&nbsp;to make the score 4-1 Wind Surge.

He allowed Juan Soto’s leadoff single in that frame and then retired the next three batters to conclude his 96-pitch outing. The Yankees pushed ahead 3-2 in the eighth against the Royals' bullpen before Garcia game through against Holmes for the walk-off.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The College World Series opens Friday at Charles Schwab Field and, for the first time since the event expanded to eight teams in 1950, only two conferences will be represented on the college game’s biggest stage. PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay are tied for the lead after one round of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. McIlroy had tremendous control on a course that demands precision. He was bogey-free for a 65 in the afternoon. Cantlay had six birdies in his round of 65 in the morning. McIlroy hasn't had a bogey-free start to a major since last winning one 10 years ago at the British Open. They led by one shot over Ludvig Aberg. Bryson DeChambeau powered his way to a 67 and was tied for third with Matthieu Pavon on France.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Aleksander Barkov and Sergei Bobrovsky led the way as the Florida Panthers moved within a victory of their first Stanley Cup title, holding on to beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in Game 3 of the final. Game 4 is Saturday night in Edmonton. Barkov set up a goal and scored another while Bobrovsky made 32 saves to continue his run of dominance in the series. The Panthers pounced on turnovers and silenced a fired up Edmonton crowd witnessing the first Cup final game with fans in the city in 18 years.

DALLAS (AP) — It’s over. That’s what the numbers say. There will be a record-setting 18th championship for the Boston Celtics to celebrate soon, maybe very soon. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to a five-year, $275 million contract extension that makes him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in NFL history. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side had announced the contract publicly. The person says Lawrence’s deal averages $55 million and ties him with Cincinnati's Joe Burrow for the most ever. Lawrence's extension includes $142 million fully guaranteed and a $37.5 million signing bonus. Lawrence is now the sixth QB making more than $50 million a year.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — An injury caused Conor McGregor to pull out of the upcoming pay-per-view event June 29 in Las Vegas that he was scheduled to headline. Organization President Dana White announced the change Thursday night on X. White saying light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira will face top-ranked challenger Jiri Prochazka in UFC 303. McGregor was scheduled to fight Michael Chandler. The first indication that bout was in trouble when his news conference June 3 in Dublin was abruptly canceled. No immediate explanation was provided.

🏈 2025 Edge rusher commits to Wildcats

TOPEKA – Changes to postseason formats and championship sites for basketball, football, wrestling and track and field highlight actions approved at the June 12-13 KSHSAA Executive Board Meeting. The postseason formats are set by the KSHSAA Executive Board each year.

Basketball -&nbsp;Beginning in March of 2026, the state basketball tournaments will be moving to four total sites. Four facilities will play host to the seven classifications, 14 championships. By honoring the KSHSAA membership voted in the fall of 2023 to qualify eight boys teams and eight girls teams involved at the final site, modifications to the daily schedule will be developed. The schedule and other event details, including classification designations for each site and venue selection will be determined and announced following the 2024-25 basketball season.

Another basketball postseason change effective with the 2024-25 season will come at the 3A, 2A, 1A DI and 1A DII classifications. Each class will be divided into four regions and then seeded into two sub-states within the region: Substate A: 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16; Substate B: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, 15. The winner of each substate will advance to the state basketball tournament. Further format details and dates will be sent to member schools.

Football&nbsp;- As announced in January, the state football championships will be moving to three sites with three games being played at each site. The executive board approved the following sites and schedule for 2024:

Emporia State University: Class 6A = Friday, November 29 at 2:00pm Class 4A = Saturday, November 30 at 1:00pm Class 5A = Saturday, November 30 at 7:00pm

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Maikel Garcia hit a game-ending two run double off Yankees closer Clay Holmes, and the Kansas City Royals recovered after squandering a brilliant start by Alec Marsh to beat New York 4-3 on Thursday and avoid a four-game sweep.

Marsh took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning against the major league-best Yankees (49-22), who had outscored the Royals 25-8 in the first three games of the series. He allowed Juan Soto's leadoff single in that frame and then retired the next three batters to conclude his 96-pitch outing.

With one out in the ninth against Holmes (1-2), Drew Waters hit a grounder that went for an infield hit after Holmes and first baseman Rizzo were confused about who would field the ball. It was the fourth blown save in 23 chances for Holmes.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After organizers for Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog-eating contest said Joey Chestnut wouldn’t compete this year because of a deal with a rival brand, Netflix swiftly announced a new hot dog-eating competition that will feature Chestnut and his “fiercest rival.”

Chestnut, a 16-time hot dog-eating champion, will face off with his frequent Nathan’s competitor, Takeru Kobayashi, in a live Netflix special on Sept. 2, the streamer announced Wednesday.

The contest, titled “Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef,” will feature the two chowing down on all-beef hot dogs, likely in a nod to reports that Chestnut’s rival brand deal is with Impossible Foods, which makes plant-based hot dogs.

Major League Eating, the organization that oversees the Nathan’s contest, announced Tuesday that Chestnut’s deal was an “exclusivity” issue, saying that it was his decision to step back from the competition he has participated in since 2005. “We love him. The fans love him,” said George Shea, a Major League Eating event organizer, adding: “He made the choice.”

Chestnut disputed that he made the choice, saying on the social platform X that Nathan’s and Major League Eating made the decision, adding that it would “deprive fans of the holiday’s usual joy and entertainment.”

He also wrote that fans could “rest assured” that they would see him east again soon, adding: “STAY HUNGRY!”

Impossible Foods has not confirmed a formal relationship with Chestnut, but he said in a statement on Tuesday they support his choice to compete in any competition, adding “Meat eaters shouldn’t have to be exclusive to just one wiener.”

Following Netflix’s announcement, Shea said the streamer was “trying to recreate the Nathan’s contest to some extent and you just can’t do that.”

“Imitation is the best form of flattery,” he added.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams joined the conversation via X on Wednesday, urging Nathan's and Major League Eating to “stop being such weenies.” “It would be ‘impossible’ to have this year's Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest without Joey Chestnut,” he wrote. “Let's find a way to squash this beef and bring back the champ for another 4th of July at Coney Island!”

In a Netflix news release announcing the competition, Chestnut said he was eager bring the competition to the streaming service.

“Through all of my years in competitive eating, Kobayashi stands out as my fiercest rival,” Chestnut said via the release. “Competing against him pushed me to be so much better. I know that fans have waited a long time for another chapter of our rivalry and I can’t wait for our massive showdown live on Netflix! It’s time to give the people what they want!”

Kobayashi, who has been rumored to be retired, said in the Netflix release that he is looking forward to facing off with Chestnut once more. The two have not competed since 2009.

“Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time,” Kobayashi said. “This rivalry has been brewing for a long time. Competing against Joey live on Netflix means fans all over the world can watch me knock him out.”

He's a career 34 percent shoot from long range in more than 100 collegiate games. In 2022-23, he enjoyed the best season of his career at San Francisco. He averaged career highs in points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game and field goal percentage. In 29 contests for USF, he made 15 starts, averaging 10.3 points per game for the season. His first season at USF saw him post 5.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 27 games, all off the bench.

As a true freshman at Nevada, Meeks&nbsp;appeared in 31 games, averaging 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds, while shooting 36.4 percent (40-for-110) from beyond the arc. His numbers jumped to 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds as a sophomore for the Wolf Pack, but was limited to 18 games due to an injury that cut his season short.

He began his prep career at Shawnee Mission East High School before playing his final season at Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Meeks helped Brewster to the 2019 National Prep Championship, behind a 34-7 record.

He is the son of former Hutchinson Blue Dragon Rowdy Meeks and Tamara Putnam, and has two brothers Marcus and Dylan and a stepsister Bishop.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Renfroe’s left big toe is not fractured, the Kansas City Royals said two days after the team initially announced it was broken by a foul ball. Kansas City said Renfroe is expected to miss two-to-three weeks, down from six-to-eight weeks. Renfroe was hurt Monday when he fouled off a pair of pitches off left-hander Carlos Rodón in the third inning. The outfielder got off to a slow start this season but had raised his batting average to .200 with six homers and 26 RBIs.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nolan Arenado and Iván Herrera each had three hits, Sonny Gray pitched seven strong innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2. UNDATED (AP) — Jerry West, who was selected to the Basketball Hall of Fame three times in a storied career as a player and executive and whose silhouette is considered to be the basis of the NBA logo, has died. The Los Angeles Clippers say West died Wednesday morning with his wife, Karen, by his side. He was 86. West was nicknamed “Mr. Clutch” for his late-game exploits as a player, and he won both NBA and Olympic titles. He was an All-Star in all 14 of his NBA seasons and won the 1972 championship with the Lakers. West was later the general manger of eight Lakers championship teams.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Florida captain Aleksander Barkov practiced again after being knocked out of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final in the third period after Edmonton forward Leon Draisaitl launched toward him and hit him in the head. Head coach Paul Maurice said the team will make a final decision about Barkov’s Game 3 status on Thursday, but the star “felt better” Wednesday. Barkov has two assists but hasn’t scored yet in the series. Neither has Matthew Tkachuk. That much hasn't changed. They've been called turtlebacks and upside-down cereal bowls. But they are a problem. And that's probably why a total of four players have broken par for the U.S. Open the previous three times at Pinehurst. Viktor Hovland is among those who say Pinehurst will be a supreme test.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - It took nearly three and a half hours in a defensive battle, but the Hutchinson Monarchs found a way to get it done. Blake Bradford came up with a single to center to score Drew Bugner for a 12-winning 4-3 walk-off victory over Newton at Hobart-Detter Field late Wednesday night.

The Monarch pitchers were outstanding with&nbsp;Brock Rod (10), Reed Scott (4), Derrick Johnson (1), Carson Cornelius (4) and Kamden Edge (2) have combined for 21 strikeouts to set a new Monarch single-game strikeout record.

&nbsp;Newton made it dramatic by scoring 2 runs in the top of the ninth then had two on base with a pair of walks bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate for the Rebels, but Reed Scott gets a pair of strikeouts to close the inning.

Lost in the excitement of a walk-off win was the fact that D.J. Merriweather launched a two-run home run to center field to give the Monarchs a 3-1 lead heading to the 8th after the game was tied 1-1.

Same two teams match up tonight in Newton with the first pitch set for 7pm at Centennial Park.

⚾ Monarchs win in walk-off fashion over Newton

WICHITA, Kan.—The Wichita Wind Surge came out on top 10-5 over the Midland RockHounds at Riverfront Stadium. The win snaps a five-game home losing streak for Wichita dating back to May 30 vs. Springfield.

Kyler Fedko&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ben Ross&nbsp;connected on solo blasts to left field in the bottom halves of the third and fourth innings. Fedko’s second round-tripper of the season left the bat at 105 MPH, while Ross’s fourth doubled the Wind Surge advantage to 2-0 a third of the way through the ball game.

Junior Perez and Denzel Clarke's run-scoring doubles tied Midland's game in the top of the fourth.&nbsp;Jorel Ortega&nbsp;slugged Wichita’s third home run of the night, a two-run blast for his third of the season in the bottom of the fifth to put Wichita ahead 4-2.

Tanner Schobel&nbsp;brought in Fedko on a sacrifice fly to center an inning later in the sixth, forcing Midland to dig into their bullpen. The sac fly made Schobel the fourth Wind Surge hitter to record an RBI on the night.

Luke Keaschall&nbsp;singled home Ross on a knock to left after the stretch in the seventh.&nbsp;Carson McCusker&nbsp;grounded a hard chopper to third that found its way to the outfield after an infield error to plate&nbsp;Jake Rucker&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jeferson Morales. Daniel Susac cut a scoring skid for the RockHounds on a base hit to left in the top of the eighth for an 8-3 score in favor of Wichita.

A pair of bases-loaded plays, a groundout, and a hit by pitch brought in two more Wind Surge runs to put them into double-digit scoring in the bottom of the eighth. Although Cooper Bowman left the yard on a two-run dinger in the top of the ninth,&nbsp;Cody Laweryson&nbsp;recorded the final out to end a five-game home losing skid.

Aaron Rozek&nbsp;evened his season record at 3-3 with a win as a piggyback reliever. Rozek held Midland to three earned runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings pitched.
