GREAT BEND, Kan. -Both teams were strong on the bump on Friday, but Hutchinson Monarchs hung on and defeated the Great Bend Bat Cats 2-1.
Monarch Russell Copous pitched one and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball for Hutchinson Monarchs in relief to get the win. The right-handed pitcher allowed one hit, striking out two and walking none.
The Monarchs accumulated 11 hits in the game. Vassart led Hutchinson Monarchs with two runs batted in from the number seven spot in the lineup. The infielder went 1-for-3 on the day. JJ Spafford, Keegan Demmer, Jarrett Herrmann, and Jeter Worthley each collected two hits for Hutchinson Monarchs.
The Hutchinson Monarch defense turned three double plays in the game. Hutchinson will play at home on Saturday again against the Bat Cats in Hutchinson on Saturday night. It is Cancer Awareness night for the Monarchs with all proceeds going to benefit the Cancer Council of Reno County.
