HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The Hays High Indians came into Gowans Stadium Friday night with pulling an upset on their minds and succeeded with a 28-0 shut-out over the #4 seed Hutch High Salthawks.

The Salthawks dug themselves a very quick hole on their first possession of the game with being stopped on fourth and two at their own 35 yard line as Kade Smith was stuffed by Hays High on two consecutive carries.

The Indians took over on downs and quickly ran the ball down to the Hutch High four yard line on a 30 yard run by Holden Lind to the Salthawk four yard line setting up first and goal from the four.

A running play by Hays placed the ball at the four and on second and goal from the two, Hays High quarterback Carter Graham scored on a quarter back running play to take the lead with only three minutes elapsing in the first quarter. After the Carson Moore PAT kick, Hays led 7-0.

Hays continued to dominate the first quarter scoring their second touchdown on the night by connecting on a Graham to Johnny Cano 34 yard play that put the Indians up 14-0 with 52 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Hays came out of the dressing room in the third quarter blanking the Salthawks until scoring their third TD of the night when Ian McGuire broke loose from 43 yards out on a 3rd and long call to make it 21-0 with 7:51 remaining to go in quarter three.

The Indians sealed the sectional win with a Lind touchdown run in the final quarter from 17 yards out with 6:47 remaining for the final score of 28-0.

It was the first game that Hutch High had been held scoreless in the season. The Salthawks ended their season at 8-3 including five shut out wins in the regular season.&nbsp;

Hays advances to take on Goddard Eisenhower in the semi-finals next Friday night in Goddard in the 5A West semi-finals.

Lind was the leading rusher on the night with 118 yards on 20 carries. Hutch High's Kade Smith had 69 yards on 21 carries capping off his senior season just short of 1,900 yards.

🏈 Hays High upsets Salthawks with shut-out in sectional

GREAT BEND, Kan. — No. 15 Hutchinson (4-1) hit the road for the first time this year for a neutral-court matchup against Truman College (Chicago).

The Dragons only turned the ball over nine times in a 98-59 victory.

Thornton and Smith each scored 16, while Arnold added 13.

Mikhail Abdul-Hamid continued his hot-streak from distance by burying 5-0f-9 triples. Abdul-Hamid now has back-to-back games with five three-pointers.

The Dragons outrebounded the Falcons 44-32. Thornton led Hutchinson in rebounding with eight snags off the glass.

Michael Dempsey led Truman with 15 points and eight boards.

The Dragons forced 18 Falcon turnovers and turned them into 29 points.

GREAT BEND, Kan. — No. 1 Hutchinson (5-0) now has 42-straight victories dating back to last season's undefeated national championship run.

The Dragons opened the Barton Best Western/Cougar Booster Club Basketball Classic Friday afternoon with an 85-54 victory over Kansas Wesleyan's developmental team.

K-Dub entered the classic after Gogebic County (Michigan) backed out of play earlier this week.

Three Dragons scored in double-digits, led by Dylan Alexander (17) and Brynne Catcher (15) off the bench.

Hailey Jackson tallied 11 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes of action.

Hutchinson shot 50.8% overall from the field, but just 7-of-24 (29.2%) from beyond the arc.

The Dragons gave up the ball only six times, while forcing the Coyotes into 26 turnovers.

Kamryn Rietzke led KWU with 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting.

The Dragons take on the Redlands Cougars in Great Bend Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Hutchinson Community College football team looks to secure a spot in the NJCAA National Football Playoffs with a road trip to play the Garden City Broncbusters on Saturday in the 2024 regular-season finale.

The No. 2-ranked Blue Dragons (8-1, 4-1 KJCCC) and Broncbusters (1-9, 1-4 KJCCC) will square at 11 a.m. at Broncbuster Stadium.

Hutchinson enters the final week of the regular season tied for No. 2 in the latest NJCAA Division I Football Rankings with Georgia Military (10-1), which has already completed its season. Both teams have 135 poll points.

Garden City enters play on Saturday after falling in a wild 49-45 battle against Iowa Central. There was a combined 839 total yards, 42 first downs and three lead changes in the game. Garden City running back Dejuan Lacey rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns, while Tyler Nelson added 144 yards as Garden City rushed for 361 yards against the Tritons.

🏈 No. 2 Hutchinson closes regular season at Garden City Saturday

The No. 15-ranked Hutchinson Community College men's basketball team goes on the road for the first time this season for a pair of neutral site contests at the Barton Classic in Great Bend.

The Blue Dragons (3-1) take on Harry S. Truman College in Friday's 3 p.m. game. Hutchinson will meet NOC-Enid on at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the final non-conference game of the regular season.

The Blue Dragons look to rebound for their first loss of the season - a 79-75 setback to Kansas City at the Sports Arena. The Blue Dragons will meet Harry S. Truman for the first time ever on Friday. The Falcons (0-1) are a Division I Region 4 team based out of Chicago. NOC-Enid, Saturday's opponent, is off to a 4-1 start to the season.

The Blue Dragons will actually play three-straight games at the Barton Gym over a span of five days. After the Barton Classic this weekend, the Blue Dragons return to Great Bend on Wednesday to open Jayhawk Conference play against the No. 2-ranked Barton Cougars.

The Blue Dragons are currently ranked seventh in the KJCCC in scoring offense at 87.5 points per game. The Dragons are No. 2 in field-goal percentage at 50.9 percent. They lead the KJCCC in 3-point efficiency at 40.5 percent and are fifth in free-throw shootings at 73.9 percent.

The Dragons rank fifth in the KJCCC in scoring defense at 71.5 points per game allowed. The Dragons rank sixth in field-goal defense at 38.9 percent and is ninth in 3-point defense at 31.1 percent.

At about 11,000 seats, it's also the largest of the spring training sites in Florida. The Rays' home since 1998, the domed Tropicana Field, was heavily damaged by Hurricane Milton on Oct. 9, with most of its fabric roof shredded. It likely cannot be repaired before the 2026 season.

Commanders fail on crucial fourth down vs. Eagles, and signature win under Daniels will have to wait

The world's tallest teenager, 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux, plans to redshirt at Florida this season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The world's tallest teenager might have to wait a year to become the world's tallest college basketball player. Florida coach Todd Golden says Olivier Rioux, a 7-foot-9 freshman who owns a spot in the Guinness record book, is planning to redshirt. Had the popular Canadian played in even one game, he would have burned one of his four seasons of college eligibility. Instead, Rioux will spend the rest of the 2024-25 season practicing with teammates and honing his skills. He will still be a freshman next fall. Florida students chanted for "Oli" in the final minutes of a victory over Grambling State on Monday as Golden emptied the bench. But Rioux remained seated.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Cam Carter scored 20 points against his former team, freshman Vyctorius Miller added 15 points and LSU beat Kansas State 76-65 on Thursday night.

Carter, who spent his sophomore and junior seasons with Kansas State, was 6 of 11 from the field, including three made 3-pointers. He has scored 62 points and made 11 of 19 3-pointers in his first three games with LSU after averaging 14.6 points last season with the Wildcats.

Dug McDaniel drove the baseline for an open layup and made a steal at the other end, leading to his fast-break layup to cut Kansas State’s deficit to 56-46 with 9:14 remaining. After a timeout, Carter sank a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.

Miller missed a wide open 3-pointer early in the shot clock in the closing minutes but got his own rebound before making a 3 from the corner to extend the lead to 72-57 with 2:33 left.

It was just Kansas State’s fifth loss at home in 36 games under coach Jerome Tang.

Jordan Sears had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Daimion Collins added 12 points for LSU (3-0). Corey Chest, who entered with just three minutes played this season, grabbed 13 rebounds in 21 minutes.

David N’Guessan and McDaniel each scored 16 for Kansas State (2-1).

It was the third consecutive year the teams have played each other. LSU and K-State first met in the finals of the Cayman Islands Classic, with Kansas State winning 61-59 when a late LSU bucket was disallowed. Then last year the Wildcats won 75-60 in the Maravich Center.

Watching the Kansas City Royals go from losing 106 games in 2023 to winning 86 games and breaking a nine-year playoff drought in 2024 was a fun ride for many fans. Many other fans saw little of the turnaround as convoluted television contracts limited viewing opportunities.

That could change for the 2025 season. On Wednesday, the Kansas City Star announced the team is renegotiating its contract with Bally Sports Kansas City. An announcement on a new contract could be announced as early as this week.

Royals management had two real options: seek a new deal with Diamond Sports Group for less money or give broadcasting rights to another organization. Major League Baseball would take over broadcasting on its own channel.

Bally Sports KC has been rebranded as FanDuel Sports Network Kansas City after Diamond Sports Group filed for bankruptcy in 2023. Diamond Sports announced Wednesday it had signed a multi-year agreement with Amazon Prime Video, which would broadcast games in "each team's designated geographic area."

Royals fans already using Prime Video would have to pay an additional fee to watch any games streamed via the service. Bally already limited geographic access to Royals games to customers using its app. The new designation via Prime would remain the same.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers wasn't sure it was a good thing that Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 22 of the team's 24 first-quarter points. But Rivers could smile about it after Antetokounmpo finished with 59 points in the Bucks' 127-120 overtime victory against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. It was the highest total by any NBA player this season and five short of Antetokounmpo's career high of 64 set last season against the Indiana Pacers. Antetokounmpo says with three keys players out, he realized that he needed to be aggressive while getting his teammates involved.

Homes of Chiefs' quarterback Mahomes and tight end Kelce were broken into last month

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Law enforcement reports show the homes of Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce were broken into last month. Before practice on Wednesday, Mahomes described it as "frustrating" and "disappointing." The break-ins were first reported by TMZ. They happened just before and on the day of the Chiefs' 26-13 home victory over the New Orleans Saints on Oct. 7, as Kelce's superstar girlfriend Taylor Swift watched from the stands. No injuries were reported in either case. Mahomes said he couldn't provide many details because the investigation is ongoing. He described it as "something you don't want to happen to anybody and obviously yourself."

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had a stroke earlier this month, is expected to make full recovery

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Basketball Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich has been away from the team because he suffered a mild stroke earlier this month, the San Antonio Spurs announced Wednesday. Popovich is in his 29th season as coach of the Spurs and there is no timetable for his return to the sideline, the team said. The stroke happened on Nov. 2 at the team's arena, and Popovich is expected to make a full recovery. The Spurs say "the organization is grateful to the extended community for providing privacy and space to the Popovich family."

Caitlin Clark draws a big crowd for an LPGA pro-am in Florida

BELLEAIR, Fla. (AP) — Caitlin Clark drained a 20-footer, this time with a putter. The WNBA rookie of the year played in the pro-am at the LPGA Tour event in Florida called The Annika. Clark brought her golf game and a big buzz to the tour. Pelican Golf Club was packed with spectators to watch Clark play nine holes with world No. 1 Nelly Korda and then Annika Sorenstam. Clark has an endorsement deal with Indiana-based Gainbridge, which sponsors the tournament. Brittany Lincicome brought a basketball for Clark to sign for her daughters. Lincicome says an appearance by the popular Clark can only help the LPGA Tour.

It's a quiet Mike Tyson as 58-year-old nears fight with Jake Paul, 31 years his junior

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Mike Tyson isn't in the mood for talking now that the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion's fight with YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul is near. Tyson and Paul meet Friday night at the home of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. The issue of Tyson's health didn't come up at a news conference about 20 miles from AT&amp;T Stadium. A bout originally scheduled for July 20 was postponed after Tyson had to be treated for a stomach ulcer when he fell ill on a flight. Officials say Tyson has been cleared medically and is undergoing checkups the same way any fighter would for a sanctioned bout in Texas.

LeBron James has third straight triple-double as Lakers rally for 128-123 victory over Grizzlies

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James had 35 points, 14 assists and 12 rebounds for his third straight triple-double and the Los Angeles Lakers rallied to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 128-123 on Wednesday night. Anthony Davis scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter. He picked up his fifth foul with 3:51 remaining in the third quarter, then came back in with 6:48 left and hit a couple of pivotal baskets, including a 3-pointer with 4:51 remaining to put Los Angeles up for good at 111-108. James was 13 of 22 from the field, hitting 4 of 7 3-pointers. Jaren Jackson Jr. had 29 points for Memphis, which had a three-game winning streak snapped.

Bills QB Allen dismisses comparisons to Mahomes by noting he's 0-3 in playoffs against Chiefs star

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Bills quarterback Josh Allen shrugs off the hype being generated in advance of AFC East-leading Buffalo hosting Patrick Mahomes and the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Allen referred to it as just one regular-season game of 17 on the schedule. He then shed light on his game-at-a-time approach when asked to reflect on how similar his production is to that of Mahomes in seven previous meetings, including playoffs. Allen pointed to one big difference in noting he's 0-3 against the Mahomes-led Chiefs in postseason meetings. Allen deserves credit for being efficient in leading the 8-2 Bills to their best record through 10 games since 1993.

Back in Top 25 spotlight, No. 22 St. John's puts away Wagner to set up Pitino father-son showdown

NEW YORK (AP) — In their return to the national rankings, Rick Pitino and his St. John's team finished much better than they started. Deivon Smith drained a 3-pointer midway through the second half to spark an 18-0 spurt that propelled No. 22 St. John's past Wagner 66-45 for its first victory as a Top 25 team in almost 10 years. St. John's jumped into the AP Top 25 poll this week for the first time since January 2019 and earned its first win as a ranked squad since topping Tulane in December 2014. Now the schedule gets much tougher, beginning Sunday at Madison Square Garden against a New Mexico squad coached by Pitino's son, Richard.

Perfect season has done the unthinkable — turned Indiana into the toast of college football

The signs of success can be found all around Indiana's campus these days. Three straight home football sellouts. Fans are spinning towels inside Memorial Stadium as voices reach a crescendo. Candy-striped basketball pants are being replaced by the more suddenly preferred candy-striped overalls. Even the start of basketball season at one of the sport's true blueblood programs cannot diminish the excitement of college football's biggest surprise and best story. Yes, the FBS program with the most all-time losses, 713, suddenly finds itself in the Top 5 and perhaps on the cusp of earning a playoff spot.

Rushing for his first career collegiate 200-yard rushing game, Hutchinson Community College running back&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bluedragonsports.com/sports/fball/2024-25/bios/jordan_jr._waymond_h58l">Waymond Jordan Jr.</a>&nbsp;hit the daily double on Wednesday being named both the Jayhawk Conference Offensive Player of the Week and the NJCAA National Offensive Player of the Week.

The sophomore running back from Pensacola, Florida posted his first career 200-yard rushing game in a 44-0 win by the number three Blue Dragons over Highland last Saturday at Highland. Jordan rushed for a career-high 213 yards on 23 carries with three touchdowns of 8, 15, and 67 yards.

He now has 18 rushing touchdowns and 1,190 yards for the season. With his 41-yard run in the first quarter, Jordan became the 20th Blue Dragon in team history to surpass 1,000 yards in a season.

With 1,190 yards for the season, Jordan is ranked No. 11 in Blue Dragon single-season rushing history.

This is Jordan's third KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week award. He won his previous awards for performances against New Mexico Military and Iowa Western in Week's 1 and 2, respectively.

Jordan is the fourth Blue Dragon this season to nab national honors. The attorney general's office in the Dominican Republic said Tuesday in a statement that police found a Glock pistol with a 15-round magazine inside the Mercedes Benz that Franco was driving during what police called an altercation over a woman's attention. Authorities said the gun was registered to Franco's uncle. New Zealand complained about a drone flying over practices before the start of the Olympic tournament, prompting FIFA to fine Canada Soccer $228,000 and strip six standings points from the team. Priestman, Mander and Lombardi were all suspended by soccer's international governing body for a year.
