City Clerk Karen Weltmer gave the oath of office to Bryan Goble and Edvar Aguirre today as Fire Captains for the Hutchinson Fire Department. Bryan brings ten (10) years of experience while Edvar brings eight (8). Both members went through a comprehensive assessment center in competing for the positions. They will take the place of retiring Captains Jeff Miller and Gerry Wiens who both will be retiring in the very near future.

Fire Fighters Alex Clark and Drew Reidy were presented with their badges and nameplates for successful completion of one year of service taking them off of probation.

The Hutchinson Fire Department is also proud to announce the graduation of recruit firefighter class 2020-02. After seven (7) weeks of intense in-depth hands on training the following recruits have earned the right to represent the Hutchinson Fire Department as probationary firefighters.

As probationary firefighters these four (4) members will continue to improve and hone their skills under the direction of their assigned company officer. The Hutchinson Fire Department strives to deliver the best in emergency services for the citizens we serve and protect, we are confident that these four (4) firefighters share in our mission of serving our community through dedication, professionalism, and education; reflecting our passion to protect and put service above all else.

In a unanimous decision by the Hutch Rec Board of Commissioners, Hutch Rec activities will remain suspended through Dec. 31. Hutch Rec’s Senior Center at Elmdale Park and the Hutchinson Sports Arena will also remain closed to the public during this time. This is in an effort to stem the rising cases of COVID-19 in our community and to stop the subsequent damage to other essential services in our community, including healthcare and education, in addition to keeping our small businesses open.

It is the hope of the Board of Commissioners and Hutch Rec leadership team that our community takes this time to make serious efforts in doing their part to help lower the number of active cases in Reno County, with the ultimate goal of resuming recreation programs starting Jan. 1. Throughout COVID-19, Hutch Rec has been a leader in the community in providing recreation activities while keeping participants safe. 

Hutch Rec has been able to provide these activities in a safe and healthy environment, thanks to specific COVID-19 guidelines set forth by the Kansas Recreation and Parks Association.

Specific Hutch Rec program and facility updates include:

• Youth Lil Dribblers basketball: Games will resume in January. Participants will receive an email with more details, and a more specific schedule will be released by sports staff in December.

• Adult Volleyball Leagues: Teams will receive pro-rated refunds for remaining fall league games.

• Central Kansas Basketball Leagues (1st-6th Grades): Registration deadline for youth competitive basketball leagues is now Jan. 4, with a Zoom coaches meeting on Jan. 7. Games will

be played as originally scheduled (double-headers at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Jan. 16, 30; Feb. 6, 13).

• Youth Recreation Basketball Leagues (1st-6th Grades): Registration deadline for youth recreation leagues is now Jan. 8, with a Zoom coaches meeting on Jan. 14. Games will be played 4

weeks in late January through February, with two weeks scheduled as double-headers to complete the 6-game guarantee.

• MINDBODY fitness classes: Classes will resume on Jan. 1 with a FREE New Year’s Day Community Workout. Community walking will also resume on Jan. 1. Additional details will be shared in

There was serious discussion over how to distribute the remaining CARES funding at the Board of Reno County Commissioners meeting Tuesday. County Commissioner Dr. Mark Steffen wanted to be sure that smaller entities that need the money most are able to get it.

"I want to feel confident that we are using those dollars to keep as many entities afloat as possible," Steffen said. 

The big number among the latest round of CARES allocations was due to go to the Cosmosphere. It was originally supposed to be an additional $200,000, but County Commission chair Ron Sellers wanted to be sure all the entities got what they could while they could still use it and to be sure to use up all that the county was entitled to and not leave money on the table.

"Approve $150,000 for the Cosmosphere and put that $50,000 down to the nonprofits, because there's 27 of them and give that $164,329 to the nonprofits via the percentage that they received before."

The State Fair will have $45,918 eligible for reimbursement for wages. The Fairgrounds Foundation will get an additional $77,670. BrightHouse will get $7000.

"The nonprofits were very appreciative of this opportunity to receive money and it's helped a lot of them," Meagher said. "I can't say it has made them 100%, but I can tell you that we've had a lot of appreciation expressed."

This is all reimbursement funds for qualified losses.

Headed into the Tuesday November 24 testing date at the Oz Breezeway on the Kansas State Fairgrounds, nearly 2,000 people have already been tested through the county's free testing program.

A total of 1,983 tests have been administered on 14 testing dates thus far, the date on the 24th will be the 15th opportunity. The largest single testing date was this past Saturday at the Fairgrounds. 

Three hundred thirteen samples were collected this past weekend.

Testing will take place on Tuesdays at the fairgrounds for the rest of the year and on Saturdays on December 5 and December 19.

Kan. —&nbsp;Reno County Interim Health Officer Karen Hammersmith reiterated the message calling for no large gatherings for the Thanksgiving holiday.

"Thanksgiving this year really should look different," Hammersmith said. "When we talk about keeping in small cohorts, it is because we always know that in times like this, holidays, people travel. They want to be with their family. You know, you have the sniffles or something. You don't feel too bad. This year, that could be COVID."

After the holidays is usually a problem even with less contagious illnesses like the flu.

Most viruses, whether it be cold or flu season, it's the weeks after Thanksgiving and Christmas that really spike things up and turn things around," Hammersmith said. "Not in a good way."

"Anytime that you have family gatherings, it's a very close situation, very personal," Hammersmith said. "People are generally speaking, hugging, sitting in the same room for many hours. You feel very comfortable and safe in family and close friends enviroments. It doesn't mean that the family and friends are not safe people. It's just that right now, anybody could be carrying the virus."

The 14-day positive test rate used by the schools for their gating criteria is at 46.5%, which is the highest it has been throughout the pandemic.

Property tax statements were sent out last week on November 19, according to County Treasurer Brenda Kowitz.

"I know people have received them as our phone is ringing off the wall," Kowitz said.

The biggest problem encountered by the treasurer's office is customers not writing their checks correctly or for the wrong amount.  The tax and specials must both be paid.

Any incorrectly addressed statements will be returned to the Treasurer's office, but if you have any questions, you can go to the annex and ask, or call the treasurer’s office at 620-694-2938.

KSBBBS announces annual raffle

The Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education Monday (Nov. 23, 2020) altered the modified hybrid attendance plan in place when the school gating criteria is in either the orange or red zone as long as staffing allows for it.

Under the change, Fridays, beginning Dec. 4, will be full remote learning days for all pre-kindergarten through high school senior students. Mondays and Wednesdays will continue to be in-person learning for Group A students (last names starting with A to L) with Tuesdays and Thursdays in-person learning for Group B students (last names starting with M to Z). Group A will learn remotely on Tuesdays and Thursdays while Group B learn remotely on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Previously, Group A and Group B students attended alternate Fridays. Schools are closed this Friday for the Thanksgiving Recess.

The Board also received the annual audit report. Each year, the district’s finances are audited by an outside entity. USD 308 contracts with Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk &amp; Loyd, LLC, to do the audit.

Auditors found no issues with finances for the 2019-20 school year. Two issues surfaced in the 2018-19 budget were corrected during the recent school year as well.

Approved the Classified Handbook for 2020-21.

The Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education Monday (Nov. 23, 2020) altered the modified hybrid attendance plan in place when the school gating criteria is in either the orange or red zone as long as staffing allows for it.Under the change, Fridays, beginning Dec. 4, will be full remote learning days for all pre-kindergarten through high school senior students. Mondays and Wednesdays will continue to be in-person learning for Group A students (last names starting with A to L) with Tuesdays and Thursdays in-person learning for Group B students (last names starting with M to Z). Group A will learn remotely on Tuesdays and Thursdays while Group B learn remotely on Mondays and Wednesdays.Previously, Group A and Group B students attended alternate Fridays. Schools are closed this Friday for the Thanksgiving Recess.The Board also received the annual audit report. Each year, the district’s finances are audited by an outside entity. USD 308 contracts with Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk &amp; Loyd, LLC, to do the audit.Auditors found no issues with finances for the 2019-20 school year. USD 313: Staffing issues key to keeping kids in school

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County overall case count is at 1078 as of Monday evening. The death count among Reno County residents is at 44.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has 234 active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 68 active cases, but has been responsible for 13 deaths. There are 44 active clusters in the county.

There are 862 cases in the community at large.

Thirty-eight people are in the hospital. One hundred seventy-eight total have been hospitalized. Sixty-six have been admitted to the ICU and 21 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is up to 19.95%, with the overall positive test rate at 26.30%. 25.41% of the population has been tested.

The next community testing date is Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Oz Breezeway on the Kansas State Fairgrounds. To schedule your appointment, call 1-844-834-3657.

This was in spite of the inability for BW to hold its normal turkey event because of COVID-19.

KWBW has obtained gift cards from Dillons for the Salvation Army to distribute starting on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Dillons provided $14,600 in gift cards for the just under $13,000 invested by BW listeners, which was 80% of the total.&nbsp;

The other 20% of the money was divided and given to Friendship Meals and the Christian Soup Ministry this year.

Over 750 families will be helped by Project Concern.

Last year, KWBW raised $16,197. Project Concern would not be a success each year without the help of BW's generous listeners.

If you're using appliances in odd places to keep everything going, be sure you're doing so safely.

"Some of those things that we put out, maybe a crock pot, because we're trying to cook ten things in the oven, if you start using those types of appliances or a microwave, make sure that the cords to those are all tied up and out of reach," Sage said. "Otherwise, children can use them and actually pull those down on to themselves."

Just because you're cooking, though, doesn't mean the kids can't help.

"They can rinse vegetables and things like that under cold water," Sage said. "You can have them help, maybe slice up some bananas with a butter knife, any type of dry ingredients that need to be mixed or measured. Those are all great things you can do to involve kids in those family traditions so they don't have to be on the sidelines."

The Christian Soup Ministry will have its annual Thanksgiving meal even though director Stanley Murdock has tested positive for COVID-19. 

The meal will be Wednesday November 25th at noon, distributed in the parking lot, with home delivery at 11:30 a.m. If you called in for a meal, you will receive one. The limit is one meal per person. 

You must be present to get meals at the Soup Kitchen. Please wear a mask. 

Murdock is not sick or feeling bad, but she is recovering at home. If you have questions, you can still call her at 620-664-9718.

Stop the Spread Kansas is a public awareness campaign urging Kansans to do their part in slowing the rate of COVID-19 infections across the state. Stakeholders are encouraging Kansans to follow the Centers for Disease Control guidelines, avoid mass gatherings, use face coverings and other measures to preserve precious health care resources.

Campaign partners include the Kansas Hospital Association, Kansas Chamber, Kansas Farm Bureau and the Kansas Medical Society. Additional organizations are likely to join the statewide effort that will begin before Thanksgiving.

“Hospitals across the state are facing significant capacity and staffing constraints because of increased COVID-19 spread, and this campaign will help ensure the normal standards of care Kansans expect will be preserved,” said KHA President and CEO Chad Austin. “All mitigation efforts taken over these next several weeks will be critical to keeping Kansas businesses, schools and other services safely open.”

Kansans can access campaign resources, industry-specific toolkits and guidance from the CDC and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment at www.StoptheSpreadKansas.org. The landing page will provide numerous communications resources over the next few weeks to help Kansans spread the word, not the virus.

“The Kansas business community is committed to the health and safety of employees and customers. Companies small and large across the state have requirements and protocols in place regarding facemasks and other measures that allow for social distancing and additional cleaning. However, we need all Kansans taking these voluntary actions. It will make a tremendous difference and reduce the pressure on our health care system. We encourage all Kansans to do their part to stop the spread of this virus,” said Alan Cobb, president and CEO of the Kansas Chamber.

Stop the Spread Kansas hopes to ignite a sense of unity, community and responsibility. The campaign will employ grassroots outreach and advertising to encourage all Kansans 18 and older to make the changes necessary to save lives. Kansas Organizations Launch Effort to Stop the Spread of COVID-19 in Kansas

The Reno County Museum is putting more things online to stay connected with those interested in the county's history.

"The museum used to have a quarterly magazine called Legacy," said curator David Reed. "They published a little over a hundred issues over about 20 years and we've managed to upload all of them to our website and they're free to look at. We're working on a couple of other programs on our website. We're going to start profiling some Reno County residents that have helped shape local history."

If you download the PocketSights app on your phone, there are special tours for you.

"It's got a historic tour of downtown Hutchinson," Reed said. "The Arts and Humanities Council also created a tour on there and we're planning on creating at least two more tours so that people can still get out in the community, still experience history and still keep their distances."

Making a museum digitally active is a challenge, but its one they are rising to.

"It's a different set of skills," Reed said. "I have to do my job and then I have to translate it into the digital world, which is sometimes a little bit more difficult. You have to adapt what you're trying to teach people. In the end, you're conveying the same message which is the history of Reno County."

The profiles planned will be four to five minute Youtube videos that will allow to spend just a little time and learn a lot about Reno County history.

Reno County Museum using the internet to continue teaching

Like many this year, instead of traveling to be with family, I will cook my own Thanksgiving dinner. Honestly, I don’t mind. It is sad not to see my family, but I am relieved that I will not be putting any of them in harm’s way. And I am not mad about getting to keep all the leftovers for myself.

Holiday rituals and decorations have always paled in my mind to the comfort brought by food. A big part of my comfort comes from the promise of making this meal.

I have spent years in the kitchen as sous chef to my mom. She has taught me the simplest way to care for all people is to make sure they are well fed. When mom is in the kitchen, she is creating a physical representation of her love and care for others. She doesn’t let screaming grandkids, a crowded house or trying to make things look pretty worry her. Cooking the same meal that my mom will prepare grounds me and makes me feel closer to her and the love she shares freely.

When I was a kid my dad, like his holiday hero Clark Griswold, was adamant that we find the perfect Christmas tree to chop down. The whole family had to bundle up in our winter clothes and head out into the woods behind my grandpa’s house. We trudged through the snow for what felt like hours, examining tree after tree to find the perfect one. He was never worried about how long it took and even seemed to get an evil glint of joy in his eye when we always came back to the very first tree we had considered.

After chopping it down, we would then have to pick a second best tree to get for grandma’s house. We dragged both trees to the car with a renewed level of enthusiasm at the prospect of getting somewhere warm so we could regain feeling in our toes. Years later, I understand it was never about the perfect tree, rather it was about the shared experience.

My grandmother, who has now passed, was one of those beautiful scatterbrain types. Every year at Thanksgiving, she would forget at least one batch of rolls in the oven and let out a yelp as the smell of smoke would waft into the dining room. For Christmas, she would often make one of us grandkids feel like we won the lottery by giving us a Christmas present in July that she had hidden and forgotten.

That “second best” Christmas tree we brought her always ended up looking like an elf had thrown-up on it as she tried to “fix it” with tinsel. In all of these moments, I remember how she would throw her head back and let out a cackle of laughter at her mistakes. She never worried about the mishaps and imperfections; she embraced them and often shared the story in a tone of conspiratorial confidence. Grandma’s ability to laugh at herself taught me to love my own imperfections.

Even though I won’t be with my family this year, they will be with me. I feel them in the joy of holiday memories and the lessons that have made me full of love and thanks.

As the holiday season arrives this year, I wish you all moments of joy from imperfection, the ability to share unconventional experiences with your loved ones and fulfillment in the things that feel like home.

They will share the successes, challenges, and problems still being solved with hybrid, flex, and remote learning, as well as district operations like bussing and food service.

USD 313 to hold State of the District Facebook Live Monday night

The chair of the Board of Reno County Commissioners is encouraging citizens to support their healthcare workers first by wearing a mask and socially distancing and following proper respiratory etiquette.

"We can argue about whether masks are 40% effective or 50% effective or what percentage effective, but its just common sense to think that if people are using masks and then social distancing and staying in smaller groups, that we're going to have less spread of the virus," Sellers said. "That's the important thing, is to cut down on spread."

Sellers is asking the community to hear the cries of the healthcare workers to give them a hand by keeping up the mitigating measures.

"We should be listening to the people that are trying to keep us safe," Sellers said. "They know the medications to use. We've had other medications brought up to the public and so forth, but I think about that the doctors know best for us. I have total confidence in the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and their executive staff and their organization for this crisis."

It's time to continue to encourage them, as well, as long as you can do so safely.

"If you have a friend in the medical service in Reno County, send them a thank you note," Sellers said. "Make them a family dinner. This is the time for the best of our community to come out. We need to see the community taking care of our dedicated medical providers. Friday, staff at the hospital was telling me that they had at least 57 people out and 23 under observation. Obviously, they are short of staff, just as every other business is. The better job that we can do staying apart from each other to cut down on the number of cases helps the hospital and helps our medical care be better."

Hutchinson Regional has around 900 employees.

Sellers: Support healthcare workers, wear your mask

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County overall case count is at 1027 as of Sunday evening. The death count among Reno County residents is at 43.

The Correctional Facility cluster type has 231 active cases measured by the county's COVID-19 dashboard. The Long Term Care Facility cluster type has 45 active cases, but has been responsible for 13 deaths. There are 44 active clusters in the county.

There are 814 cases in the community at large.

Thirty-seven people are in the hospital. One hundred seventy-five total have been hospitalized. Sixty-five have been admitted to the ICU and 21 have been intubated. These are Reno County resident numbers regardless of where they are hospitalized.

The community's positive test rate is holding at 18.57%, with the overall positive test rate at 25.85%. 25.09% of the population has been tested.
