HUTCHINSON, Kan. — NASA shuttle astronaut Dr. Janet Kavandi was in Hutchinson to talk to students about STEM research and how time in the classroom can lead to a better future. Kavandi was part of a presentation to students from the Magnet School at Allen and McCandless Elementary&nbsp; at the Cosmosphere on Thursday.

“We are now trying to get kids to understand that they have many opportunities in their future if they stay focused in school and set high goals for themselves,” Kavandi said. “And if they study, especially the sciences, engineering, IT, all of those kinds of fields, they can help us build these spacecraft.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The space race is still growing within the United States as commercial space flight is becoming more common. Kavandi says while it is in some way a competition, it is still one group working for a common goal.

“NASA is essentially turning over low earth orbit as the international space station is today to commercial companies,” Kavandi said. “So when we deorbit the international space station we already have another commercial space station that can accept commercial partners.”

Kavandi says she is very excited about the NASA Artemis program that will send astronauts back to the moon and said now is the time to get students excited about the space program again noting that it is up to parents and teachers to make that happen.

“I think one of the most important things is for parents to ensure that their kids know that they have opportunities,” Kavandi said. “My dad was wonderful about letting me know that I could do anything I wanted.”

Kavandi is currently President of Sierra Space which is a Colorado based company building a space vehicle for future commercial flight.

Kavandi talks to students about reaching for the stars in Cosmosphere event

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It appeared that the Hutchinson City Council wants to switch to a neighborhood pool model for aquatics in the city rather than continuing to invest in Salt City Splash at the same level they have for the past 20 years.

The idea would be to build two to three neighborhood pools and trim back to just using the Splash's 50-meter pool for things like summer competitive swimming and special events and potentially have a splash pad next to it, but get rid of the zero entry portion.

The council decided not to make a business case for tourism dollars as the cost to build something bigger and better would be cost-prohibitive for Hutchinson residents for just an 86-day pool season with the school year starting consistently in mid-August.

Salt City Splash had about 90,000 in attendance in its first three years, then a couple of years after that at about 60,000 and then attendance fell off and has been below 40,000 for over a decade.

Hutch Rec staff will be working on scenarios to return to the council with in the coming months.

It was also discussed in the meeting that the city continue dialogue with the YMCA as part of the overall idea generation, as some donations have come in to build a mega facility that could include some aquatic features or a different pool.&nbsp; Ronn McMahon-President and CEO of YMCA of Greater Wichita attended the public meeting on Thursday.

In the 18 months from October 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022, Reno County has had 457 non-fatal overdoses and 31 fatal overdoses.

Drug education forum to take place in Hutchinson April 22

Money is still being raised for a mural to be painted on the north side of the Mid Kansas Co-Op seed wash building on Kansas Avenue in Haven.

The group raising money will be offering a hamburger feed during the Haven city-wide sale on Saturday, April 30th from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the lot just south of Hardware Haven at 104 N. Kansas Avenue. 

Currently they have 75% of the funds needed to complete the mural. 

The painting is due to begin on May 16th if they get the rest of the funds.

McPherson USD 418 sent a message to parents Wednesday letting them know that they plan to have professional collaboration each week for staff in the 2022-23 school year. 

This will be accomplished with either a late start on Fridays or an early dismissal from school on Wednesdays. The district would like input between now and Friday, April 22, 2022 on which schedule works best.

USD 418 planning weekly collaboration in 2022-2023 school year

Hutchinson Chamber CEO Debra Teufel said they are already getting some interest in the spec building that had Industrial Revenue Bonds approved by the City Council last month.

"We're actually meeting with an industry on Friday that is interested in the building," Teufel said Tuesday. "I just got a call Monday about a company from out of state that might be interested in it and it's giving us something to put out there in the marketplace that we can really use as the hook to get people to look at Hutchinson."

One issue is a really tight labor market in Hutchinson and Reno County right now.

"Unemployment is down to 2.7% for the last number in Reno County," Teufel said. "That's basically full employment. We do have to defend that workforce proposition for every project that we bid on or that we submit our community on. We have to defend that we can find the workers once they come. If you build the building, they will come. Will the workers come with it? That's the million dollar question."

Existing employers are still looking for workers, too.

"I was sitting down with one of our existing employers just on Friday," Teufel said. "They said they would hire 25 people tomorrow if they could find the people. It is this balancing act of, how do we continue to fulfill the needs of existing employers, but continue to grow the economy? The conversation we had and they agreed was that the more robust economic activity we're bringing to the community, the better it is for them, because, if someone's moving here for a job, they're probably bringing a trailing spouse. They may be bringing kids that are going to grow up in our education system and create sticky feet, that we grow the population base."

The hope from the city council when they approved the bonds was that this building would be able to be the first of its kind and that more spaces could be built and filled once the concept is proven to work.

NEWTON, Kan. — Harvey County Economic Development announced two major projects this week. 

21 Albermarle, LLC, purchased 10 acres at 1st Street and Oliver Road in Newton for an initial 40,000 square-foot facility for their national distribution complex, with building expansion plans up to 150,000 SF. This project represents $2.75 Million in Capital Investment and will create 10 new full-time jobs upon completion, with an estimated 65 by the end of year 5.

The company currently has a kit manufacturing warehouse in Wichita, KS. The planned facility will service an upcoming Ben Franklin Express Stores concept among several new businesses they plan to develop in Newton.

Also announced was an expansion for Bunting Magnetics. The Newton-based company recently purchased an existing 12,000 SF building, located at 1001 S. Spencer Ave in Newton to accommodate their growth. This expansion represents a capital investment of $2.8 Million and the creation of 6 new jobs.

Bunting Magnetics is a family-owned company that manufactures magnetics for industrial processing equipment.

The City of Moundridge in McPherson County was awarded $409,914 from the state's BASE grant distribution to make improvements to the electrical and natural gas distribution systems in the city to assist with industrial and residential growth.

The City said in a release that U.S. Census figures show a 12% growth in the city between 2010 and 2020.

The planned electrical system improvements will include the construction of an electrical distribution line from the city's new substation on the south end of town to the Bradbury Company and Tortilla King on their own circuit at the junction of 23rd Avenue and Highway 260. The Kansas Municipal Energy Agency will assist in the building of the line.

The natural gas system improvements will include construction of a 4-inch gas line from the north to provide new service to Tortilla King, which is currently on a dead-end line. The 7,000 feet of new gas line will create a loop in the gas distribution system to provide more consistent natural gas pressure in the system.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson High School students and staff will be giving back to the community at the 6th annual Salthawk Service Day on Friday, April 29.

Salthawk Service Day is an event focused on giving students and staff the opportunity to volunteer in the community. Students will work as collaborative groups on service projects with local community organizations to foster collaboration, relationships and teamwork. While a list of pre-selected service projects was provided to classes, students had the opportunity to coordinate their own projects with staff.

&nbsp;“The purpose of Salthawk Service Day is to encourage students to get involved. We want to give students a heightened sense of purpose for self, school and community,” HHS principal Ryan Ewy said. “We look forward to this event each year, and are excited to see this impact this has on our community,” Ewy said.

Some groups will remain at Hutchinson High School for their volunteer projects, completing tasks such as creating veteran care packages, cleaning up flower beds, and painting murals. Other groups will volunteer throughout the community at organizations such as the Hutchinson Zoo, the Hutchinson Animal Shelter, the Cosmosphere, and the Hutchinson Public Library.

An open house will be held on Thursday, April 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

The public is invited to tour the new landfill buildings&nbsp;which include an updated scale house, household hazardous waste drop-off and “swap shop”, water tank storage and filling, and garage for the field trucks.

Staff will be on hand to answer questions and refreshments will be served.&nbsp;The landfill moved across the road from their old facility this past February.

Kan. — There's been some mild relief at the gas pump in recent days.

"Reno County's a little bit higher today at $3.73 a gallon," said Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas. "Today in Kansas, we're at $3.66 a gallon. That is down 16 cents in the past month and down seven cents from where we were a week ago."

The state is the second-cheapest for gas this week and there is some overall downward pressure on the crude oil market.

"The global oil market has seen lower prices since the U.S. and some of its allies have agreed to significant releases of oil reserves. We've also seen some indicators from China, where resurgent COVID-19 infections are causing the potential for economic slowdown in one of the world's largest oil consuming nations."

It remains to be seen what impact President Biden's executive order allowing for the continued production of E15 may do for overall supply.

"We'll be watching that," Steward said. "In terms of AAA's position on E15, we support the development and use of alternative fuels and we recommend that drivers refer to their owner's manual and see if their vehicle is compatible with E15 fuel before using it."

The Biden administration estimates gas prices will be on average about 10 cents cheaper after EPA waives E15 during the summer months.

AAA: Reno County above state average for gas

BUHLER, Kan. — The Buhler USD 313 Education Foundation will present nearly $60,000 in donations to five Buhler families that were affected by the fires in March.

“It is reassuring to know that Williams supports its employees and the communities where we live in critical times like the recent wildfire,”&nbsp; Justin Mills, operations supervisor, Williams said. “I’m thankful that we can provide relief through this donation to our neighbors and employees who have been impacted in our hometown.”

All of the funds received at the Foundation for the fire victims will be distributed out to the five families that experienced a total loss.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The loss our Buhler families sustained from the fires was extensive in both property and personal belongings,” Couchman said. “Each family that is receiving funds had their homes destroyed by the fire. These funds will lay the foundation for them as they begin to secure more permanent living arrangements.”

USD 313 Education Foundation raises nearly $60K for fire victims

Kan. —&nbsp;Kansas First District Congressman Tracey Mann was in Hutchinson Wednesday morning at the Cosmosphere as part of his annual town hall tour of the Big First.

"There are a lot of people concerned about the southern border," Mann said. "I share those concerns. A lot of people are concerned with the spending. I share those concerns. That's why we've been voting against it. I don't know that there were any surprises, but it's good to listen to folks and hear what's top of mind for people in Reno County and all over the district."

With the new inflation numbers released yesterday, Rep. Mann is hoping that American agriculture can help solve at least some of the nation's energy issues in the short and long term.

"I'd like to think that it's going to impact the future Farm Bill by increasing our domestic liquid fuel production, which is both oil and gas, but it's also ethanol," Mann said. "The answer is below our feet and growing in our fields, to ramp up domestic liquid fuel production, drive down costs, stop relying on other countries, to me it's a no brainer."

Mann supports the idea of expanding the usage of E15 beyond the waiver for this summer announced by the Biden administration in Iowa on Tuesday.

"I'd like to see that made permanent," Mann said. "We've introduced legislation as such and I was pleased to see that yesterday."

E15 is safe for most cars manufactured in 2001 or later, but check your car's owner's manual for specific details. Mann is in the midst of 40 town halls in the two-week Congresssional break.

Mann: No surprises at town hall, inflation can be helped by agriculture

The district is holding two informational nights to discuss maintenance needs within the school district and the potential bond issue to cover those needs. Those dates are Monday, April 18 and Monday, April 25. Both begin at 6 p.m.

The district is looking for public input and ideas on what is needed. They also want patrons to meet the architect and construction management teams that have been put in place. The night will also include a tour of the district's facilities.&nbsp;

If all goes as planned, the district will put the bond issue before the voters in August.

Pretty Prairie USD 311 to hold bond informational meetings

STAFFORD, Kan. — While Reno County lost out on the Building a Stronger Economy (BASE) grant program, Stafford County did make the list.

The Stafford County Port Authority will receive $2.5 million to help fund a transload facility near St. John.&nbsp; If all goes as planned Wind River Grain of Garden City would build a grain terminal at that location. The 256 acre parcel would include a large rail spur loop that could handle full size unit grain trains of more than 100 cars. BNSF has already agreed to service the facility which carries an estimated to cost between $7 and $10 million. 

That means, while the proposal is moving forward, the authority will still need to find more funding to make the long planned project a reality.

With the Port Authority owning the land and rail infrastructure,&nbsp; it can also lease access to other businesses and products which could include but is not limited to aggregate, fertilizer, wind components, general manufacturing, warehousing and distribution. The hope is to make it a consolidation point for containers to establish a regional access point to BNSF.

Wind River will invest in the grain storage bins, high-speed load out equipment, and all facilities needed to establish operations. It will lease space and pay fees to access the rail infrastructure. The expansion for Wind River is expected to create 8 to 10 direct jobs and up to 30 trucking jobs. It is also expected to bring a broader benefit to farmers through improved grain prices.&nbsp;

The port authority was established in Stafford County in 2014 with a study to help development of the project starting in 2018. In 2020 a $150,000 grant was used to fund legal expenses and engineering for the project.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Victims of the Cottonwood Complex Fire may be eligible for a Housing Disaster Relief Assistance Grant. Prairie Land REALTORS®, the local trade association for REALTORS®, is accepting applications that will assist with one month’s rent or mortgage payment for those displaced by the fire destroying their residence. It is open to both homeowners and renters who were displaced by fire damage.

The short application process requires some basic documents and approved funds will be issued to both the applicant and their landlord or mortgage holder. Grants cover one month’s rent at a new residence or a mortgage payment for one month.

Melodie Sattler, President of Prairie Land REALTORS, said in a release, “We have members willing to help applicants complete the grant application, answer any questions and assist however we can.”

The REALTORS® Relief Foundation is a non-profit organized by the National Association of REALTORS receiving donations from REALTORS® across the country. Donations are 100% distributed to help disaster victims with housing needs. Previous disasters in Hays, Lawrence, Manhattan and other Kansas communities have received resources from the organization.

Realtors trade association offering fire victim assistance

Kan. — Dr. Mohammed Al-Halawani, MD with Hutchinson Pulmonology Associates located within Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, has been named a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP).

"Dr. Al-Halawani and his partner, Dr. Musa are doing just fantastic things at the hospital," said Chuck Welch with Hutchinson Regional. "I credit them with saving literally hundreds of lives during this COVID pandemic."

Dr. Al-Halawani is board certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine.

"That's for distinguishment in serving his community, as well as the practice of chest medicine," Welch said. "That's a very, very profound distinction."

Dr. Al-Halawani is looking forward to collaborating with other chest physicians that are part of the fellowship.

“This designation will provide an opportunity to visit one on one with contemporaries throughout the nation to research better ways for us all to treat our patients," Dr. Al-Halawani said in a release. "It will allow me to expand my network, nationally and internationally; continue developing professionally and be a leader in the field of chest medicine, as well as help my practice grow clinically and academically, allowing me to provide the best patient care possible and make full use of new treatments on the drawing boards."

Hutchinson pulmonologist receives national fellowship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A&nbsp; 35-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on alleged sex crime charges.

The Reno County Sheriffs Department says Wayne J. Willard was arrested on three counts of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The investigation started with an incident reported to patrol deputies. They got detectives involved and another victim and more incidents were reported. It is suspected that there may be several more victims and more incidents may have occurred.

Willard is being held on $500,000 bond pending the filing of official charges. The investigation continues, and no further information is available. All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Cosmosphere announced Tuesday that astronaut Dr. Janet Kavandi&nbsp; and U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran will visit the Cosmosphere on Thursday for a STEM engagement event titled, “Dreams Worth Chasing.” The event takes place at 8:30 a.m. in the Cosmosphere lobby.

More than 80 students from Hutchinson STEM Magnet School at Allen and McCandless Elementary are expected to attend.

Sen. Moran and Dr. Kavandi will discuss the importance of STEM education and her experiences as a NASA astronaut.

Dr. Kavandi grew up in Carthage, Missouri, and was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1994. As a mission specialist, she completed three Space Shuttle missions. Dr. Kavandi currently serves as President of the Sierra Space Corporation.

Sen. Moran is the Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee that provides resources to NASA.

Mann to hold Reno County town hall today

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson City Council and the Hutchinson Recreation Commission will meet in a special session to go over several matters on Thursday.

The two sides will sit down and discuss the ongoing aquatics master plan. The master plan is being assembled to discuss the future of the Salt City Splash and how to improve aquatics in the city. In April of 2021, the council approved an agreement for the aquatics study. Originally, the plan was to complete the master plan by the end of 2021, but that was not possible. At the time, it was noted that the staff needed more time to digest all of the information and get a new city council up to speed on the master plan of the entire parks system.

What has been found regarding the Salt City Splash is that it needs some modifications as it stands including new drain covers, electrical work, a new emergency alarm speaker system and just overall upkeep of the facilities. Other needs include chemical controls for the baby pool, inspection and replacement of valves and pumps, and repairs or the replacement of the water spray features.

Aside from the pool itself, the facility needs concrete repair, roof replacement on all of the buildings, and repairs to the lifeguard stations.

As stated in the past, the pool is underserving the needs of the community averaging about 31,000 visits per year. In a city the size of Hutchinson, that number should be closer to 50,000.&nbsp;

The meeting will also include discussion regarding the new concession stand at Hobart-Detter Field, the health neighborhood initiative update, the use of the city facilities and how they have been used over the past year.&nbsp;

Thursday's meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Hutchinson city offices.

At the time, it was noted that the staff needed more time to digest all of the information and get a new city council up to speed on the master plan of the entire parks system.What has been found regarding the Salt City Splash is that it needs some modifications as it stands including new drain covers, electrical work, a new emergency alarm speaker system and just overall upkeep of the facilities. Other needs include chemical controls for the baby pool, inspection and replacement of valves and pumps, and repairs or the replacement of the water spray features.Aside from the pool itself, the facility needs concrete repair, roof replacement on all of the buildings, and repairs to the lifeguard stations.As stated in the past, the pool is underserving the needs of the community averaging about 31,000 visits per year. HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The SkillsUSA Kansas competition is coming back to Hutchinson this year after a two-year break because of COVID.

SkillsUSA Kansas will be April 27 through April 29 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds. The annual statewide competition will feature more than 40 skills competitions and nearly 1,000 students. The competition is asking for volunteer judges for competitions on April 27 and April 28.

SkillsUSA competition coming back to Hutchinson

NEWTON, Kan. — Officials with Newton USD 373 issued a statement Tuesday afternoon regarding a lockdown situation at Newton High School.&nbsp; The statement reads:

"At approximately 9:50am on 4/12/2022, Newton Police notified us of a report of a student in the parking lot with a gun. The school was placed on lock-in while police secured the perimeter and investigated the situation. Shortly after, a student reported a shooter inside the building near the library. That was inaccurate information at the time, but the appropriate response was to deal with what is considered the greatest level of threat at the moment, which is why the ALICE (Alert Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate) protocols are enacted via announcement.

Police immediately secured the area while the administration enacted ALICE protocol, leading some students to run from the perceived threat. Administration was able to locate the initial report on surveillance cameras, quickly identify the student, and reach out to the administration to ensure that the student and object were secure. Once that occurred, we lifted ALICE alert and enacted our post-crisis protocol.

Extra counselors and social workers are in place for students and staff feeling stress from the event over the coming days. Additionally, there are resources linked in this message for talking to students about violence.

The suspicious person was an area-wide student taking courses on the Newton High School campus. We are addressing the matter from a disciplinary perspective with the students involved. The district cannot comment or provide additional information regarding the disciplinary recourse for the students.

We remain thankful to our law enforcement partners for their swift response and to all students and staff for following protocol. We are once again thankful for how our students responded to this unfortunate incident. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.”

Newton USD 373 releases statement on Tuesday's lockdown

The USD 308 Board of Education heard updates from the KidWind team at Hutchinson STEM Magnet @ Allen on Monday.

A team of students traveled to Topeka on Saturday, April 2 to compete in the State KidWind competition after getting second place at regionals last month. At the state competition, the Allen STEM team received 4th&nbsp;place, with the top 3 teams moving on to the national competition.

This is Allen STEM Magnet’s first time competing in the KidWind Challenge.

The next regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting is Monday, April 25, 2022 at 6:00 p.m. at the USD 308 Administrative Center, 1520 N Plum.
