SEDGWICK COUNTY– On Wednesday, the Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners approved the settlement of two federal lawsuits related to alleged misconduct by a former Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy. The lawsuits stem from incidents that occurred in July 2022.

At that time, while investigating a security breach at Sedgwick County Jail, investigators learned 22-year-old Dustin Burnett, the on-duty deputy in that area of the jail, observed inmates break a window, bring contraband into the facility and didn't stop it or inform anyone it occurred. He also did not give investigators the full story about the incident when confronted about it, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter.&nbsp;

Later, two female inmates reported inappropriate sexual contact with Burnett, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick. The alleged sexual contact occurred on July 17, 2022.

Burnett started work at the jail in January of 2022 and was terminated upon his arrest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In&nbsp; April of 2023, Sedgwick County District Judge Tyler Roush sentenced Burnett to 68 months in prison. On February 10 Burnett made an Alford plea to three charges of unlawful sexual relations with two female inmates and official misconduct in the jail.

Under the terms of the federal lawsuit agreements, Sedgwick County will pay $200,000 to resolve one case and $175,000 to resolve the second case involving Burnett. As part of the agreed settlements, Sedgwick County asserts that all claims are without merit but has resolved to settle to avoid significant defense costs, expenses, and risk of litigation.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a successful debut season in 2024, Salt City Racing is returning to the Hutchinson Fairgrounds with an expanded 2025 schedule, new series, and renewed community enthusiasm.

Track promoter Phil Nightingale said lessons learned during the inaugural season have paved the way for a smoother and more exciting year two.

“We learned a lot about running a racetrack,” Nightingale said in a BW Morning Show Interview. “The crowd, the drivers—everyone had great enthusiasm. And now that we’ve got a three-year contract with the Fair Board, we’re in it for the long haul.”

Last year’s highlight was the Silver Crown race in July. Despite skepticism, Nightingale and his team successfully hosted the track’s first 100-lap race in more than a century, proving the updated track surface could go the distance—and then some.

“We could’ve gone 150 laps,” he said. “That’s how good the track was.”

Credit for the improved surface goes to Mike, a track specialist out of Iowa with experience prepping NASCAR’s dirt event at Bristol Motor Speedway. He spent three days reshaping the Hutchinson track last season—no new dirt, just new angles and better preparation.

This year, more improvements are coming. Nine new wall panels will be installed before the April opener and the pit entrance is moving from the east side to the west for better flow.

Joining Nightingale again this year is Nick Baalman, who co-manages the operation and brings decades of racing experience to the table.

“I’ve raced my whole life, but I had no idea what goes into putting on just one race night,” Baalman said. “It’s a massive behind-the-scenes effort. But the support from the community here has been incredible.”

Baalman, who helped launch Mel Hambelton Racing seven years ago, praised the collaboration between the dealership, racing division, and Salt City Racing. He said the enthusiasm from sponsors this year is stronger now that a long-term agreement is in place.

Salt City’s season kicks off April 25 with the Heartland Modified Touring Series, one of the fastest-growing modified divisions in the region. That race will also feature the United Rebel Sprint Series, setting the tone for a thrilling season.

“We’re expecting 40 cars, maybe more,” Nightingale said. “It’s going to be a great show.”

Drivers are anticipated from across Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska and Colorado, emphasizing the event’s regional draw.

Fans can also look forward to additional major events, including:

Salt City Racing will continue streaming races in 2025, primarily through RacingDirt, while ASCS and Silver Crown events will be broadcast on DirtVision and FloRacing, respectively.

For Nightingale, the secret to success is teamwork.

“Nick and I share everything—responsibilities, ideas, frustrations. You can’t run this kind of thing alone,” he said. “I couldn’t do it without him.”

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Board of County Commissioners will meet Wednesday morning to consider a range of items, including budget requests, a conditional use permit, and solar regulations.

On the consent agenda, commissioners will vote on a conditional use permit for the construction of a township supply building at the northwest corner of Wilshire Drive and West Fourth Avenue. The Reno County Planning Commission approved the request by a 4-1 vote at its most recent meeting.

Also included is a request to spend $52,239.77 on new desktop and laptop computers. The replacements are needed due to an upgrade to Windows 11, following Microsoft’s announcement that support for Windows 10 will end in October.

Several budget proposals are also on the agenda. Reno County Research and Extension is requesting a 5.3% increase in its 2026 budget, while the Reno County Drug Court is seeking $10,000 in funding. Horizon Mental Health and TECH are asking to maintain their current funding levels of $400,000 each.

In other business, commissioners will vote on new solid waste fees for the Reno County landfill and consider a funding request from Strawn Homes for its Plum Creek subdivision.

The board will also discuss solar energy regulations in the county’s unzoned areas.

The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Veterans Room of the Reno County Courthouse.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Jeremiah Harmon, welding instructor at Hutchinson Career &amp; Technical Education Academy, has been named the Allen Samuels Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Teacher of the Month for April.

Harmon was surprised with the award Monday afternoon and honored with a gift basket, as well as a pizza and ice cream party. The award was presented by Don Glaspie and Cris Schul from Allen Samuels and Ashley Weve with EAGLE Media.

He was nominated by substitute teacher Michele Hansen, who praised the environment Harmon has created in his classroom.

“As a sub, I appreciate a class that has high expectations and love from the teacher,” Hansen said. “The students treat me with so much respect, kindness and appreciation I just have to sub in his class. I do not have to monitor, discipline or deal with any negative behaviors because Mr. Harmon has modeled to the students how one should behave, perform and follow through.”

Harmon credited his students for the honor.

“This isn’t a me, this is a we,” Harmon said. “All I did was create an opportunity for them to impress somebody, and they did. It was a substitute who noticed their behavior and put in for the award. That says a lot about them.”

Harmon’s welding class operates with a strong emphasis on career readiness. Students work at their own pace with individual assignment sheets and receive immediate, hands-on feedback in the lab.

“I treat it like we’re at work,” Harmon said. “Class starts at 8, so I’m ready at 8. The students are expected to be, too. It’s about preparing them for the real world.”

Originally from West Virginia, Harmon said he learned welding out of necessity. After serving in the Army as a machinist, he moved to California and worked in the welding trade. A shortage of skilled labor on a major bridge project in the Bay Area made a lasting impression.

“When I saw a major bridge project needing Canadian welders because we didn’t have enough here, it hit me: if we’re short on skilled workers, we need teachers,” Harmon said. “That’s when I knew I wanted to teach.”

Now in his 15th year of teaching, Harmon said he continues to be inspired by his students’ potential.

“One of you could be welding in outer space,” Harmon told his class. “And who says it can’t be you?”

Jeremiah Harmon is Allen Samuels Teacher of the Month for April

TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, today, announced that new legislation establishing a system for the instant verification of auto insurance has been signed into law. SB 42 contains provisions that give the Kansas Department of Insurance the authority to establish an insurance verification system that can be utilized by the Kansas Department of Revenue, law enforcement, the court system and county treasurers - all who are required to verify insurance.

“Driving without insurance is against the law. Period,” said Schmidt. “No longer should law-abiding Kansans have to foot the bill for this illegal activity.”

The new law creates the framework that allows the Kansas Department of Insurance to issue a bid for contract with a vendor to create and implement the verification system. The new system will be entirely funded by the Kansas Department of Insurance and is required to be in place by July 1, 2026.

“If you have ever been in an accident with an uninsured motorist, you know your policy takes the hit and your rates go up,” said Schmidt. “I think that’s wrong, and that’s why I proposed this legislation to give the state better tools to stop uninsured motorists.”

Hutch Rec will host area adaptive youth at the annual Youth Adaptive Track Meet on April 23, sponsored by Kiwanis of Downtown Hutchinson.

This year’s meet features 66 students in 7th-12th&nbsp;grades from Hutchinson, Buhler, and Nickerson school districts. It also includes more than 30 volunteer students from Trinity High School, as well as members of the Kiwanis Club and community volunteers with Hutch Rec. Kiwanis is also serving lunch to participants, teachers, and volunteers.

Kansas Farm Bureau is fully engaged in the process of developing policy for members’ consideration at our annual meeting in December. The Resolutions Committee has received your ideas from issue surfacing and we have started developing proposals for the full delegation to consider.

We all know that we live in interesting times, and it is even more critical that we hear from all of our members and gather as many opinions as we can. The policy in our book reflects the direction our members want Kansas Farm Bureau staff to engage with legislators and other leaders as they make decisions that affect your farm or ranch.

The grassroots nature of our policy book is what gives Kansas Farm Bureau and the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) their clout in Topeka and Washington D.C. Each one of those policies came from a member and were developed with the help of other members until they were adopted by Kansas Farm Bureau and, in the case of national policy, (AFBF).

I hope you had an opportunity to attend an issue surfacing meeting, but if you did not and want to submit an idea or an issue for the Resolutions Committee, you can do so at www.kfb.org/advocacy. Again, I remind you that our policy and our organization are strong because of members and their ability to have a voice in the direction of the organization.

This fall we will have 10 listening posts all across the state, and it will be your opportunity to voice your opinion on any of the proposed policy changes. The more members who weigh in on policy changes, the stronger those changes are. Each of our 10 districts are represented on the Resolutions Committee, and I encourage you to reach out to yours with ideas or questions. Every member has the right to voice their opinion and we are stronger because of the varied ideas.

In December at the Kansas Farm Bureau Annual Meeting we will finalize the proposed changes in policy and that policy book will be our marching orders when it comes to working with legislators at the state and federal level. Those are your words and your ideas and that is why it is so important that we have as much input as possible.

Will we always agree with the policy? Probably not, but it is in the book because a majority of the delegates from all 105 counties voted for it. You know what? If you don’t agree with the policy you have the ability to lead the charge to change it. Everything we do is member driven, which means what we do can be changed by, you, the member.

I hope you will engage in the policy development process. Yes, we have already started the wheels in motion, but there is still time for each member to weigh in with their ideas. If you are not a member, there is still time to join and jump in.

I believe in our process, and I truly believe it is because we are a grassroots organization who has a seat at the table for everyone involved in agriculture its up to you to be involved.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The City of Hutchinson has officially transitioned to a new website address, hutchinsonks.gov, in an effort to strengthen digital security and more clearly identify official city communications.

The change, which took effect this week, includes updates to the city’s website and, soon, its email addresses. All city email addresses will eventually end in @hutchinsonks.gov. Current email addresses will continue to function during the transition period.

This update not only helps protect resident information but also makes it easier for people to recognize official messages from the City of Hutchinson the city said in a Facebook post.&nbsp;

City officials are encouraging residents to update their bookmarks and contact lists to reflect the new domain.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Hutchinson Community Concerts is preparing to launch its 2025–26 concert season with a full slate of performances and a commitment to affordability, community, and cultural enrichment. The series, which dates back to 1936, remains one of the city’s best-kept entertainment secrets.

“We're probably the best value in town,” said Craig Johnson, a local organizer and board member for the group. “Six concerts for $60, plus access to concerts in Great Bend as part of our reciprocal agreement—it’s really hard to beat.”

Tickets are now on sale online at HutchinsonConcerts.com, and the organization will host an in-person ticket drive April 30 through May 2 at First National Bank in downtown Hutchinson.

Partnering with Allied Concert Services, Hutchinson’s concert series features nationally and internationally touring performers. Allied’s Craig Risnes, who helps select and book acts for dozens of cities across 16 states, joined Johnson for a recent interview.

“The idea is to bring world-class music to communities that don’t necessarily have big-city access to the arts,” said Risnes. “It’s about exposure—for families, kids, music lovers—and creating experiences that last.”

The upcoming 2025–26 season opens September 20 with The Mexican Brass, a tight-knit, classical brass quintet known for their musicianship and playful stage presence. Reesness described the group as “fun, sharp, and globally seasoned, with over 20 years performing together.”

Dan Miller &amp; Wendy (Nov. 1) – A cowboy duo from Cody, Wyoming, delivering country music, cowboy poetry and gospel.

Nate Hentz, Pops Pianist (Nov. 10) – A dynamic show featuring everything from ragtime to rock, with audience interaction and a few surprises.

CC Teneal’s Divas of Soul (Feb. 17, 2026) – A soul-stirring Motown tribute inspired by icons like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Whitney Houston.

Katie McMahan's Celtic Celebration (March 17, 2026) – Known for her exquisite soaring soprano solo in the original Riverdance single.&nbsp;

Live from Laurel Canyon (April 24, 2026) - An endearing evening of live music and narrated stories of influential songwriters of Laurel Canyon.

Before the new season kicks off, ticket buyers can enjoy two “bonus” concerts as part of the current season: Sail On, a Beach Boys tribute group on May 1, and Alliance Brass, performing music from stage and screen on May 5.

“We always strive for variety—there’s something for everyone,” Johnson said. “That’s our mission. We want to build community through live music.”

In addition to the shows in Hutchinson, members can attend concerts in Great Bend, which books a different selection of performers through the same touring system.

Hutchinson Community Concerts operates as a membership-based nonprofit, supported entirely through community involvement. The group does not sell individual concert tickets; instead, season memberships provide access to all six performances, plus Great Bend shows.

“Our membership numbers help us plan,” Johnson explained. “So this is the time to join.”

Kindergarten readiness is top of mind this week as Hutchinson Public Schools prepares to host meet and greet events for incoming students and their families.

On Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m., Ferris Graber, Wiley, Morgan and Lincoln-McCandless elementary schools will welcome families for a special kindergarten event. Allen Elementary, a STEM-focused magnet school, will host its meet and greet Thursday during the same time.

The events are designed to introduce children and families to their new schools and staff in a welcoming, low-pressure environment.

“This is really just a fun opportunity to meet the teachers, principals and other families,” said Stacy Goss USD 308 Director of Communications. “You don’t need to bring any paperwork—it’s just a chance to connect.”

All children who turn 5 on or before Aug. 31 are eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall. For younger children, the district offers the Little Hawks program, which serves children from birth through age 5.

Thanks to the Myrna B. Weeks Donor Advised Fund through the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the district will distribute welcome gifts to approximately 265 incoming kindergarteners. Each gift includes basic school supplies, Play-Doh, and a 100-page summer skills workbook focused on letter recognition, coloring, tracing, fine motor skills and more.

“These are all the things that educators and the state of Kansas say students need to be practicing over the summer,” said Goss. “Some students already know these skills, and some don’t—but we’ll meet them where they are.”

Kindergarten readiness continues to be a key focus for the district, as research shows strong early learning experiences set the tone for long-term academic success. Studies have shown a positive correlation between attending preschool and third-grade math and reading scores.

“We’re deeply invested in early childhood education,” Goss added. “When families are also invested, it helps children enter kindergarten emotionally, socially, physically and academically prepared.”

In addition to in-district support, families are encouraged to take advantage of resources like the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which provides free books to young children.

The district also hinted at broader changes in how kindergarten might be introduced next year, reflecting the evolving needs of incoming students.

“We’re exploring what I’d call a ‘course correction’ in how we begin kindergarten,” Dr. Dawn Johnson, USD 308 Superintendent. “Students today come to us differently than they did 20 years ago. It’s about crawling and walking with them before we expect them to run.”

District to hold kindergarten meet and greets 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Kansas State Fair is turning up the volume this September with the return of fan-favorite Hairball, a high-energy 80s tribute band known for their elaborate costumes, pyrotechnics, and rock star impersonations.

Hairball will hit the Nex-Tech Grandstand stage on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m., as part of the fair’s 2025 entertainment lineup. The group previously performed at the fair and drew a strong crowd, a trend Executive Director Brian Schultz expects to continue.

“We had Hairball a couple of years ago, and the energy they bring to the stage is electric,” Schultz said in a Monday morning announcement. “I worked with them for over a decade in North Dakota, and we never saw attendance dip. People love them.”

Formed in Minneapolis, Hairball features two dynamic lead singers who embody iconic rock legends through both voice and costume. During a typical set, audiences might see Gene Simmons of KISS, Prince, or Twisted Sister brought back to life with uncanny accuracy.

“It’s not just music—it’s a full show,” Schultz said. “They don’t just play the part. They are the part. From the hair and outfits to the pyrotechnics and stage presence, it’s like you’re back in the 80s seeing these bands live.”

Tickets go on sale this week, beginning Thursday, April 24 for early access subscribers, and Friday, April 25 for the general public. Prices range from $25 to $75, with special packages available, including: • Grandstand seating: $25–$30 • Kansas Star Casino Party Pit (floor-level front-of-stage): $35 • VIP Deck Standing Area: $75• • Reserved VIP Tables (seats six, includes drinks and appetizers): $600

Each concert ticket includes fair gate admission, a value-add that simplifies the fan experience.

“This is really affordable entertainment,” Schultz said. “If you’ve priced concerts lately, you know $35 to be this close to the action is a steal.”
