Hutchinson Regional CEO Addresses Leapfrog Safety Grade, Staffing Reforms, and Path Forward

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Benjamin Anderson, chief executive officer of Hutchinson Regional Healthcare System, is pushing back on concerns raised after the hospital received a low grade in the most recent Hospital Safety Grade issued by the Leapfrog Group, emphasizing that the score reflects historical data and does not capture the health system’s recent improvements.

Speaking during an in-depth interview on the BW Morning Show, Anderson said the Leapfrog score relies on a rolling multi-year data set, meaning performance issues from two to three years ago—particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic—continue to weigh down the hospital’s current grade.

“Some of the data that affects this score goes back several years,” Anderson said. “As those older events fall off the reporting window, we are seeing steady improvement every six months.”

Pandemic Impact and Staffing Challenges

Anderson acknowledged that Hutchinson Regional, like many hospitals nationwide, struggled during the pandemic. The healthcare industry lost roughly 20 percent of its workforce nationally, he said, and Hutchinson Regional leaned heavily on traveling nurses and contract physicians to maintain operations.

“Those clinicians are essential in a crisis, but they don’t practice the same way as people who live here, shop here, and have kids in our schools,” Anderson said.

Over the past two years, the hospital has made a concerted effort to localize its workforce. Anderson said Hutchinson Regional has recruited 24 medical providers in the last 24 months, all of whom live in the community or will soon. By summer 2026, he expects the health system to be nearly free of contract physicians and traveling nurses.

Two years ago, Anderson said, only one emergency department physician lived locally. By next summer, nearly every physician will reside in Hutchinson.

“You practice differently when this is your community,” he said.

Recruitment Strategy and Community Role

To strengthen recruitment, Hutchinson Regional evaluated what it is like to live and work in Hutchinson using a “Community Apgar” framework developed by the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. The assessment found that while the community offers strong schools, food access, and childcare progress, internal hospital culture needed improvement.

“That told us the work we needed to do was inside the organization,” Anderson said.

The hospital shifted its recruitment strategy toward mission-driven providers with local ties or a strong desire to practice in rural medicine. Anderson compared the approach to collegiate athletics recruiting, bringing physician candidates to Hutchinson in groups so they could build trust and recruit one another.

“That momentum is real, and it’s making recruitment easier,” he said.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade compiles publicly available and voluntarily reported data into a letter grade from A to F. Anderson said Hutchinson Regional previously did not participate in the Leapfrog survey, which meant the grade was calculated using limited public data—negatively impacting the score.

“When we started fully reporting our data, the score improved,” Anderson said. “We don’t want a D, but we’ve owned where we were and focused on fixing it.”

Before the pandemic, the hospital held a C grade, he said. During COVID-19, it dropped to a D and briefly an F. Since resuming full reporting and implementing reforms, the score has climbed again, with leadership expecting continued improvement as older data cycles out.

Internal Review and Safety Culture

Hospital leadership reviews each Leapfrog report through a formal committee process, conducting root cause analyses and using findings to shape strategic priorities. Anderson said transparency is central to that work, with results shared internally among staff and with the hospital’s board.

Leadership also participates daily in an 8:30 a.m. safety huddle to review patient safety indicators, including falls, infections, and other serious events. When incidents occur, multidisciplinary teams investigate system failures rather than assigning blame.

“If harm is preventable, it’s morally unacceptable,” Anderson said. “We have an obligation to fix broken systems.”

Patient Communication and Transparency

Anderson highlighted several initiatives designed to strengthen patient communication, including a dedicated patient relations manager who reviews every complaint and survey response. The hospital also operates a Patient and Family Advisory Council made up of community members.

Standardized handoff procedures between shifts and a rebuilt care management department help ensure continuity of care, he said.

Beyond the hospital, Hutchinson Regional shares performance and safety information through employee forums, community newsletters, and public appearances.

“We can dislike where we are today and still love the trend line,” Anderson said. “And the trend line is moving up and to the right.”

Among the hospital’s forward-looking priorities is continued improvement in emergency department throughput. Anderson noted that in early 2024, nearly 9 percent of emergency patients left without being seen due to long waits. After staffing and process changes, that rate has dropped to under 1 percent.

The hospital is also preparing to participate in Kansas’ Rural Health Transformation funding initiative, which will invest millions statewide in workforce development, access to care, and healthcare technology.

“Hutchinson is a large, complex rural healthcare hub,” Anderson said. “We serve not just Reno County, but communities west and south of here. We take that responsibility seriously.”

Anderson said the hospital’s long-term goal is clear: continued progress toward a Leapfrog A grade through sustained cultural change, staffing stability, and transparency with the community.

“This is a health system on the rise,” he said.

HRMC CEO addresses safety report, staffing reforms and path forward

A newly released video underscores just how close the community came to a serious tragedy after a Rice County sheriff’s deputy narrowly avoided a head-on collision with an impaired driver traveling the wrong way on a roadway earlier this week.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred several days ago, though the timestamp visible on the video does not reflect the actual date. In the footage, a vehicle can be seen driving against traffic, coming within moments of striking a deputy’s patrol unit head-on.

Thankfully, no one was injured. Authorities say the margin for error was extremely small, and the outcome could have been far worse for both the deputy and other motorists on the road.

Officials say the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers impaired driving poses—not only to drivers and families traveling during the holidays, but also to first responders who put themselves in harm’s way to keep roads safe.

As New Year’s celebrations approach, law enforcement is urging the public to plan ahead if alcohol or other impairing substances are involved.

“If you plan to celebrate, please plan a sober ride,” officials said. “One decision can make all the difference.”

Law enforcement agencies across the region continue to emphasize designated drivers, ride-sharing services, and other safe transportation options as critical tools in preventing impaired-driving crashes during the holiday season.

Beginning in 2026, the Harvey County Treasurer's Office will charge a $2.50 facility fee per vehicle or title for in-person motor vehicle transactions.

The intent of the fee is to offset the costs to operate the vehicle division. The Treasurer's Office cites that current operations for vehicle transactions creates about a $95,000 deficit that is eventually covered with taxpayer funds. Treasurer Amy Perkins said implementing the facility fee could make up much of the deficiency.

There are other options available for vehicle renewals. Renewals can be completed by mail at no charge. They can also be placed inside the drop box on the south side of the Harvey County Courthouse at no charge. Renewals can be completed online at ikan.ks.gov. Renewals through iKan include a $2 fee that goes to the State.

Harvey County to charge facility for in-person motor vehicle transactions

The Hutchinson YMCA has announced updated facility hours that will take effect on Thursday, January 2, 2026, providing expanded access for members heading into the new year.

Under the new schedule, the Hutchinson YMCA will be open Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Weekend hours have also been expanded, with the facility now open Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The YMCA noted that pool hours will match the facility’s daily opening time, while closing 30 minutes prior to the building’s closing time each day.

The updated hours are intended to offer greater flexibility for fitness, recreation, and wellness activities for individuals and families throughout the community. YMCA staff encourages members to take advantage of the expanded hours and wish everyone a happy and healthy new year.

A volunteer-led effort to identify unmarked graves and secure proper recognition for veterans buried in Reno County cemeteries continues to make progress, despite delays caused by a federal government shutdown.

Jessica Frost, organizer of Operation Final Salute, recently provided an update during an interview on the BW Morning Show, outlining both recent accomplishments and ongoing challenges tied to veterans’ grave markers and incomplete burial records.

Frost said a planned roundtable discussion with local funeral homes, businesses and a representative from U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran’s office was postponed during the shutdown. The meeting was intended to clarify next steps for ordering veterans’ headstones and coordinating future preservation efforts. Organizers are now hopeful the meeting can be rescheduled later this winter or early spring.

Despite the setback, Frost has completed a full survey of Fairlawn Cemetery, where she identified 45 veterans buried without headstones. Work is now focused on Eastside Cemetery, one of the county’s oldest burial grounds.

Eastside Cemetery presents unique challenges. Frost said the cemetery experienced a large-scale disinterment in the early 1940s, when remains were relocated and records were often left incomplete or lost. The cemetery also contains both city and county “poor farm” sections, where individuals who could not afford private burial were interred, frequently without permanent markers.

“At Eastside, we’ve photographed the entire cemetery and are now validating burial records and military service,” Frost said. “We’re about 45 percent complete and have identified at least 20 veterans who currently do not have headstones.”

In some cases, Frost said families declined permanent markers or chose alternative memorials. In others, temporary metal plates—originally intended to be used for only a few months—were left in place for decades to provide minimal identification.

Since launching her work publicly earlier this year, Frost said more than two dozen families have reached out seeking help locating relatives’ graves. Disinterments, duplicate headstones and conflicting online records often create confusion for descendants trying to trace burial locations.

Part of Frost’s work includes correcting and updating information on public genealogy websites, validating veterans’ service records and, when possible, documenting personal histories. One notable discovery involved a veteran buried at Eastside who served as a guard for President Abraham Lincoln and was later a pallbearer at Lincoln’s funeral.

Frost said the issue of unmarked or undocumented veterans’ graves is not limited to Reno County, but reflects a broader, nationwide problem rooted in historic burial practices and outdated policies. Prior to the mid-20th century, veterans who died by suicide or under certain circumstances were often denied headstones, a policy that has since changed.

“Now, those veterans are eligible for markers, but the process still requires verification and, in many cases, permission from surviving family members,” Frost said.

While the application process for veterans’ headstones has become more accessible, Frost emphasized that awareness remains a challenge. She continues to work with local veterans organizations, the Reno County Museum and community volunteers to ensure veterans receive proper recognition.

Operation Final Salute operates entirely on a volunteer basis. Updates on the project and ways to follow its progress are available through the organization’s Facebook page.

“Our goal is simple,” Frost said. “No veteran should be forgotten, and no grave should remain anonymous if we can help it.”

Kansas Awarded Nearly $222 Million in Federal Funding to Transform Rural Health Care

Kansas will receive nearly $222 million in federal funding to strengthen and modernize rural health care systems, following the Trump Administration’s announcement of first-year awards under the Rural Health Transformation Program.

On Monday, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall praised the allocation of $221,898,008 to Kansas, calling it a generational investment in rural communities and a major win for families, hospitals, and health care providers across the state.

The Rural Health Transformation Program, established under Republicans’ Working Families Tax Cuts legislation, represents the largest federal investment in rural health care in U.S. history. The program is designed to expand access to care, strengthen the rural health workforce, modernize facilities and technology, and bring innovative models of care closer to home.

“Access to quality health care shouldn’t depend on your zip code, and thanks to President Trump’s leadership, this historic investment will transform rural care for Kansas families,” Marshall said. “This funding will help keep hospitals open, recruit and retain providers, expand access to specialty care, and modernize critical infrastructure.”

According to Marshall’s office, Kansas funding will support projects aimed at strengthening the rural health workforce, investing in modern equipment and technology, supporting sustainable hospital operations in high-need areas, expanding access to primary, maternal, and specialty care, and developing innovative, rural-focused care delivery models.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran also applauded the award, noting that Kansas will receive approximately $222 million for the first year of the five-year program, which begins in 2026. Moran helped establish the Rural Health Transformation Program through the Reconciliation Bill, signed into law on July 4.

“The Rural Health Transformation Program is a significant investment in rural health care and will help improve outcomes for struggling hospitals, invest in new technology, and bolster rural communities,” Moran said. He emphasized that the funding requires no state match and will be tailored to the specific needs of rural providers in Kansas.

Nationally, the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services announced that all 50 states will receive awards under the $50 billion program, with $10 billion distributed annually from fiscal years 2026 through 2030. Kansas is among the top recipients, exceeded by only five other states.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the program is intended to ensure that rural Americans have access to affordable, high-quality care close to home, while CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz called the funding an extraordinary milestone for rural health in America.

Governor Laura Kelly confirmed Kansas’ award and said the funding will fundamentally change health care delivery in rural communities statewide.

“This funding for Kansas will go a long way in fundamentally changing the health care delivery system for rural communities across the state,” Kelly said, thanking state agencies and partners involved in developing Kansas’ application.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment will serve as the lead agency for the grant, coordinating with stakeholders across the state. Kansas’ plan focuses on five key initiatives: expanding primary and secondary prevention programs, securing local access to primary care, building a sustainable rural health workforce, enabling value-based care, and harnessing data and technology.

Kansas submitted its application to CMS on Nov. 3. State officials say additional details on implementation timelines and next steps will be shared as the program moves forward.

Kansas awarded nearly $222M in federal funding for rural health care

Educators from across Reno County will come together next week for “All Hands on Deck,” a large-scale professional development event designed to foster collaboration, shared learning, and innovation across school systems.

The one-day event is scheduled for Jan. 5 on the Hutchinson Community College campus and will bring together teachers and administrators from every public school district in Reno County, along with Central Christian School and higher education partners at HutchCC.

Paul Erickson, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for grades 6–12 at Buhler USD 313 and one of the event’s lead organizers, said the gathering represents years of planning and coordination among local school leaders.

“This has really been an idea for probably 10 years,” Erickson said. “Coordinating calendars and committing a professional learning day across that many districts is a significant challenge. It took a lot of teamwork from superintendents and school boards to make it happen.”

Because of the scope and planning required, the event is held every other year. The upcoming session marks the return of “All Hands on Deck” following its initial launch in 2024, which received strong feedback from participating educators.

The day will feature a keynote address from Kim Bearden, co-founder of the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, along with dozens of breakout sessions and networking opportunities. Erickson said pooling resources across districts makes it possible to bring in nationally recognized speakers while also offering a wide range of locally driven sessions.

“Educators are collaborative by nature,” he said. “They want to learn from one another. Bringing everyone together allows us to tap into that collective expertise and create a learning experience that would be out of reach if districts worked in isolation.”

In addition to the keynote, the majority of breakout sessions will be led by local educators, highlighting successful classroom practices and district-level initiatives from across the county. Erickson estimates roughly 80 percent of presentations are facilitated by teachers and staff from participating schools.

“We have tremendous expertise right here in Reno County,” Erickson said. “This gives our educators the chance to showcase what they do every day and learn directly from their peers.”

Bearden will remain on campus throughout the day, delivering multiple sessions to smaller groups of teachers in addition to her keynote presentation. Erickson said her hands-on approach and classroom-focused background make her a strong fit for the event.

“She’s a teacher by nature,” he said. “Not only can she deliver a powerful keynote, but she’ll also be teaching alongside us all day. We’re really fortunate to have her.”

For organizers, success will be measured not just by attendance, but by how educators feel at the end of the day.

“When teachers from all subject areas — including electives, career and technical education, the arts, and coaching — say the day was meaningful for them, that’s the marker of success,” Erickson said. “If they leave saying, ‘I can’t wait to do this again,’ then we’ve done our job.”

 </figure>MARC JACOBS Hutch PostEducators from across Reno County will come together next week for “All Hands on Deck,” a large-scale professional development event designed to foster collaboration, shared learning, and innovation across school systems.The one-day event is scheduled for Jan. 5 on the Hutchinson Community College campus and will bring together teachers and administrators from every public school district in Reno County, along with Central Christian School and higher education partners at HutchCC.Paul Erickson, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for grades 6–12 at Buhler USD 313 and one of the event’s lead organizers, said the gathering represents years of planning and coordination among local school leaders.“This has really been an idea for probably 10 years,” Erickson said. “Coordinating calendars and committing a professional learning day across that many districts is a significant challenge. It took a lot of teamwork from superintendents and school boards to make it happen.”Because of the scope and planning required, the event is held every other year. Erickson said pooling resources across districts makes it possible to bring in nationally recognized speakers while also offering a wide range of locally driven sessions.“Educators are collaborative by nature,” he said. “They want to learn from one another. Bringing everyone together allows us to tap into that collective expertise and create a learning experience that would be out of reach if districts worked in isolation.”In addition to the keynote, the majority of breakout sessions will be led by local educators, highlighting successful classroom practices and district-level initiatives from across the county. Erickson estimates roughly 80 percent of presentations are facilitated by teachers and staff from participating schools.“We have tremendous expertise right here in Reno County,” Erickson said. “This gives our educators the chance to showcase what they do every day and learn directly from their peers.”Bearden will remain on campus throughout the day, delivering multiple sessions to smaller groups of teachers in addition to her keynote presentation. Erickson said her hands-on approach and classroom-focused background make her a strong fit for the event.“She’s a teacher by nature,” he said. “Not only can she deliver a powerful keynote, but she’ll also be teaching alongside us all day. We’re really fortunate to have her.”For organizers, success will be measured not just by attendance, but by how educators feel at the end of the day.“When teachers from all subject areas — including electives, career and technical education, the arts, and coaching — say the day was meaningful for them, that’s the marker of success,” Erickson said. “If they leave saying, ‘I can’t wait to do this again,’ then we’ve done our job.”

A major community effort to expand food access in Reno County is entering its final stretch, with organizers reporting $153,000 left to raise before a December 31, 2025, year-end deadline.

Leaders behind the project say the remaining funds are critical to completing a much-needed space designed to better serve families facing food insecurity across the county. Once finished, the expanded facility is expected to improve capacity, reliability, and efficiency in meeting the growing demand for food assistance.

Supporters emphasize that year-end contributions will have an immediate and lasting impact. Donations made before the deadline will go directly toward construction and completion costs, helping ensure the space is fully operational in the coming year.

“This is the moment to help us cross the finish line,” organizers said in a statement. “Your year-end gift will ensure families across Reno County continue to have reliable access to food when they need it most.”

Community members are encouraged to consider making a year-end donation to help close the remaining funding gap and support long-term food security efforts in Reno County.

Those interested in contributing can do so now, helping to nourish Reno County’s future as the calendar year comes to a close.

Recommended items include water, snacks, weather-appropriate clothing such as hats, gloves and heavy coats, sturdy hiking shoes, binoculars, a hiking stick, and a camera.

We didn’t have any strong tradition around trimming a Christmas tree when I was a child, at least not that I can remember. Obtaining the tree resembled a loose imitation of Clark Griswold as we ventured out to the corner of a pasture to find a red cedar that had managed to escape repeated fires.

Nearly all these adventures were rather uneventful and ended with an indoor evergreen adding a festive look and scent to our house. We’d drape lights over the boughs and hang an assortment of ornaments from the branches, carefully testing the heavier ones against the tree’s thin limbs.

Once erected and decorated, the tree was largely a stationary sentinel overseeing a growing pile of presents. It stood on duty until the packages were distributed on Christmas morning. Its mission completed after a few weeks, the tree was unceremoniously removed and disposed of before the New Year.

This was the tree routine of my childhood with the exception of one year. The only time I can remember we didn’t get, set up or decorate a tree at Christmas has provided one of my family’s most cherished holiday memories and likely the story that’s been retold the most.

Like any good American family story, this adventure began in a vehicle – a green Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40 to be exact. The small, boxy, rugged vehicle wasn’t designed for toting Christmas trees. I also know it wasn’t built for comfort because my brother and I were relegated to the jump seats in the rear, which lacked both cushioning and seatbelts. It was, however, a vehicle created specifically to not get stuck on a hunting trip.

We were after the wrong prey, apparently, because our search for a perfect evergreen ended abruptly when we tried crossing a small draw in the middle of the pasture. The precise details of how we got stuck elude me, but the multiple escape attempts have been told and retold over the years.

When locking in the hubs to engage the four-wheel drive didn’t work, the next option was the winch on the front of the vehicle. The only problem was getting stuck in the middle of a pasture didn’t offer any anchor points. Luckily my dad had packed a mobile mooring for such an occasion. After several minutes of digging, hammering and swearing, he’d secured the ground anchor and attached the winch.

The cable grew taught and the Land Cruiser rocked ever so slightly before the shallow soil holding the anchor gave way and we remained stuck. The only option was a long walk to my grandparents’ house to get help while we stayed with the vehicle.

It didn’t take more than an hour or so for help to arrive in the form of my grandfather driving the tractor with a grin stretching from ear to ear while my father was riding on the hay wagon with his pride slightly defeated.

We were pulled free in short order and went home without a tree. Our presents accumulated under a small, decorative tabletop tree that year. We didn’t know it then, but that was also the start of a new Christmas tradition.

The hunt for a live tree faded as my brother and I grew older and weekends got busier. The decorative tree became the centerpiece for presents, and it still serves that purpose today — only now most of the presents are for grandkids.

While it doesn’t require any trimming, it still serves as a reminder of that fateful adventure so many years ago when a failed routine gave us a story and a new tradition that connects generations that never had the chance to meet.

When we retell the story of getting stuck in search of a Christmas tree, it leads into the narratives, anecdotes and chronicles that make up our family folklore.
