According to the United Way’s website, the organization “leads with purpose and works upstream to address the root causes of issues in our community.” The nonprofit supports more than 18,000 Reno County residents through partnerships with 22 local agencies, focusing on four key areas: youth opportunity, healthy community, financial security and community resiliency.

“From beginning of life to end of life, and everything in between, the United Way is fighting for the health, education and financial stability of every person in our community,” the organization notes.

Founded in 1988 by Bob and Pat Schmidt, The Schmidt Foundation was created to invest in the success and well-being of the communities it serves. The founders believed that “a rising tide lifts all boats” — that giving back creates a ripple effect of good, helping communities grow and thrive.

The funds will support the United Way’s ongoing initiatives in Reno County, including local youth book-delivery programs, resource navigation services through the 2-1-1 helpline, and other community resilience projects. The organization’s annual impact report cites more than 2,900 residents served in the past year through dozens of community investment partners.

The City of Arlington has issued a drinking water warning after tests showed nitrate levels above the federal safety limit. Officials are urging residents not to give tap water to infants under six months old or to use it for making infant formula.

A water sample collected on Oct. 8 showed a nitrate level of 11 milligrams per liter (mg/L), exceeding the federal maximum contaminant level of 10 mg/L. Nitrate in drinking water is a serious health concern for infants younger than six months, as it can cause “blue baby syndrome,” a potentially fatal condition marked by shortness of breath and bluish skin.

Do not give the water to infants under six months old. Bottled or low-nitrate water should be used for drinking, juice, and formula preparation until further notice.

Do not boil the water. Boiling or freezing does not reduce nitrate levels and may increase concentration as water evaporates.

Adults and children older than six months may safely drink the tap water. Pregnant women and those with health concerns should consult their doctor.

City officials said the elevated nitrate levels likely resulted from natural, industrial, or agricultural sources, including septic systems and runoff. Nitrate levels can fluctuate during the year, and the city will notify residents when concentrations return to safe levels.

In the meantime, bottled water is being provided for infants up to six months old, pregnant and nursing mothers, and elderly residents with health conditions. Bottled water can be picked up at the City Office in Arlington.

Reno County officials are asking residents to share their opinions on how best to fund local services and community investments through a new resident survey being conducted in partnership with Wichita State University’s Public Policy and Management Center (PPMC).

About 4,000 randomly selected Reno County residents will receive the survey in November. The results will help county leaders understand community priorities and preferences as they consider future funding options, including the potential use of sales tax revenue.

The survey will also gather feedback on how residents view the balance between sales tax and property tax as funding tools. Sales tax is collected from everyone who spends money locally—visitors, renters, and property owners alike—while property tax is paid annually by property owners, though landlords typically pass those costs along to renters.

According to 2024 county data, Reno County’s current 1-cent sales tax offsets the total county mill levy by 7.96 mills. The total county levy in 2024 was 35.504 mills.

Officials say the goal is to ensure the community understands how each tax structure impacts the funding of essential county services and to identify which investment priorities matter most to residents.

“Both sales and property taxes play important roles in keeping our community running,” county officials noted in a statement. “We want to hear from residents about what they value most and how they believe we should invest in Reno County’s future.”

Residents who receive the survey in November are encouraged to complete and return it to help shape the county’s long-term funding and service strategies.

County to seek input on future funding priorities

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — For the 37th consecutive year, Ineeda Cleaners is helping keep local children warm through its annual Coats for Kids campaign, a community tradition that began in 1988 and continues to thrive thanks to local generosity and long-standing partnerships.

The coat drive, founded by former owner John Neal and his friend, Dan Deming, collects new and gently used coats, hats, gloves and blankets for families in need. The items are cleaned at no charge by Ineeda Cleaners and distributed through the Salvation Army of Hutchinson.

“It’s really a community effort,” said current co-owner Rachel Nelson, who operates the business alongside her husband, Chris. “We’ve seen so many familiar faces bringing in coats, cleaning out closets, and just wanting to help. Even one coat makes a difference for one child.”

Donations are being accepted through Friday, Oct. 31, at the Hutchinson Ineeda Cleaners location at 13th and Main. The cleaners will then spend the first week of November preparing items for distribution. The Salvation Army will distribute coats Friday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Nelson said the greatest need this year is for coats and hoodies in children’s and junior high sizes, especially those suitable for kids walking to school or playing outside during recess.

“It’s not just about staying warm, it’s about kindness,” Nelson said. “We can all agree we want coats for kids.”

Ineeda Cleaners has grown to include locations in Newton and Salina, as well as a drop-off site in McPherson. Despite changes in the dry-cleaning industry, Nelson said the company’s commitment to the Coats for Kids mission remains a proud cornerstone of its business.

“The Salvation Army does such a great job of making distribution a dignified, positive experience,” she said. “We’re honored to keep this tradition going.”

The Reno County Commission has approved a total of $291,966 in bids for four county projects, including repairs to the courthouse dome, replacement of the courthouse fire panel, the purchase of three new pursuit vehicles, and furniture for the new law enforcement training center.

Facilities Director Kyle Stewart told commissioners that significant leaks have developed in the courthouse dome and exterior walls, leading to water damage in fifth-floor offices, including the District Attorney’s office. He said mortar pieces have broken away, leaving gaps up to three-quarters of an inch wide.

Stewart said temporary fixes by county maintenance staff have helped, but permanent repairs are needed. The county received limited interest from contractors, and the commission unanimously approved a $69,200 bid from Mid-Continental Restoration of Fort Scott to complete the work.

The commission also approved a $45,130 bid from Firetronics, a Hutchinson-based company, to replace the courthouse’s outdated fire alarm panel, which has caused repeated false alarms.

In other business, commissioners approved the purchase of three new pursuit vehicles for the Reno County Sheriff’s Office. County Automotive Director Ron Brubaker recommended accepting the slightly higher bid from Miday Motors due to fleet compatibility and service advantages. Commissioner Randy Parks voted against the motion, expressing concern about choosing higher bids too often.

Finally, the commission approved a $41,815 bid from Office Plus of Kansas for furniture for the new law enforcement training facility. Sheriff Darrian Campbell said the original furniture quote was $56,000 but the office was able to reduce costs by reusing items from other county buildings.

Happenings Around Hutch - Oct. 24-26

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Nearly two years after breaking ground, the highly anticipated Hilton Garden Inn &amp; Conference Center is ready to welcome guests. The hotel, located along the K-61 corridor near Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, will officially open its doors Tuesday, Oct. 28 — a milestone that local leaders say will revitalize convention business and strengthen the city’s position as a regional tourism hub.

“This is a hotel that Hutchinson can be very, very proud of,” said General Manager Nathan McClanahan. “The attention to detail throughout the project is something you’ll notice the moment you walk in. It’s truly one of the nicest hotels in Kansas.”

The Hilton Garden Inn features 112 guest rooms, including 72 double-queen rooms and 40 single-king rooms — a mix McClanahan said was strategically designed to meet the community’s growing event and tourism needs. The property also includes more than 14,000 square feet of flexible meeting and conference space, capable of accommodating conventions, weddings, and large gatherings.

LeAnn Cox, Vice President of Operations and Tourism for the Hutchinson/Reno County Chamber of Commerce, said the hotel fills a critical need in the community’s hospitality landscape.

“It’s been quite a few years since we’ve had a truly upscale property to sell,” Cox said. “This puts Hutchinson back on the map for conventions and meetings that used to come here when we still had the convention center. We’ve already booked 12 events into the new hotel, with more than 30 additional leads in progress for 2026 and 2027.”

The opening also signals a resurgence in local tourism development. Visit Hutch partnered with the city to identify the best possible site for a hotel-conference center. A 2018 visitor study pinpointed the K-61 corridor as the most viable location, leading to a successful collaboration that secured the six-and-a-half-acre property.

Cox tells us, "So in partnership with Hutch Regional, they were great to work with. As far as acquiring that land from them, they owned those two parcels, six and a half acres there. This is, you know, the ideal location, and that's kind of how we got to that spot. It’s easily accessible, surrounded by major attractions, and perfectly positioned to draw in new business.”

While the hotel will open Tuesday, the on-site Old Chicago Restaurant — a centerpiece for both guests and locals — will follow with an anticipated December 8 opening. The restaurant’s breakfast service, required under Hilton brand standards, will be available immediately to hotel guests.

McClanahan said the project represents more than just a new lodging option. “Every visitor who comes to town spends money — in restaurants, shops, and attractions. This hotel adds to that economic cycle,” he said.

The new Hilton Garden Inn brings Hutchinson’s total lodging inventory to about 804 rooms, according to Cox. With strong early bookings and the anticipated draw of major events like the NJCAA Basketball Tournament, both McClanahan and Cox believe the new hotel will help ensure those events — and their economic impact — remain in Hutchinson for years to come.

“This property was essential,” Cox said. “Without it, we risked losing NJCAA basketball and other key events. Now, we’re positioned for growth.”

The Hilton Garden Inn Hutchinson opens to the public Tuesday, Oct. 28. Community members are invited to stop by for tours and event inquiries.

Hilton Garden Inn set to open Tuesday

TOPEKA — The Kansas Supreme Court has appointed District Judge Michael Llamas as chief judge of the 9th Judicial District, effective January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027.

Llamas will succeed Chief Judge Marilyn Wilder, whose term concludes at the end of 2025. The 9th Judicial District covers Harvey and McPherson counties.

“We appreciate Judge Llamas taking on the responsibilities of chief judge to provide leadership continuity for the 9th Judicial District,” said Acting Chief Justice Eric Rosen. “We also thank Chief Judge Wilder for her leadership and great service to the courts during her years in that role.”

Llamas has served as a district judge in the 9th Judicial District since 2022.
“I am honored for this opportunity to serve as chief judge,” Llamas said. “I look forward to this new challenge and will do my best to serve the 9th Judicial District.”

A Newton native, Llamas earned his undergraduate degree from Wichita State University and his law degree from the University of Kansas School of Law. He practiced privately before becoming an assistant Harvey County attorney and later served as city prosecutor for Hesston and municipal court judge in Burrton, Walton, and Florence.

He is an active member of the Kansas District Judges Association and the Harvey County Bar Association.

Each of Kansas’ 31 judicial districts has a chief judge who, in addition to presiding over cases, oversees case assignments, court administration, and clerical operations within the district to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the judicial system.

Llamas appointed Chief Judge for the 9th Judicial District

One of Hutchinson’s most unique fall traditions returns this month as Stage 9 presents the 19th annual Talking Tombstones on Saturday, October 25, at Eastside Cemetery, 500 South Cleveland.

The event, directed this year by Stage 9 board member Meischa Zimmerman, brings history to life as local actors portray notable former Hutchinson residents at their gravesites, sharing their life stories and contributions to the community.

“I figured I’d never directed before, and this seemed like a good way to start,” Zimmerman said. “It’s been a great experience, and I’m excited for people to see how we’ve brought these stories back to life.”

This year’s production features 10 historical figures — the largest cast in the event’s history. Among them: •&nbsp; Wendy Pope as teacher Elizabeth Randall •&nbsp;&nbsp;PJ Ford as suffragette Henrietta Briggs Wall, who co-owned Wall &amp; Wall Dry Goods — the same building where Stage 9 now performs •&nbsp;&nbsp;Sarah Winkler as Etta Coley Riggs •&nbsp;&nbsp;Jo Stroupe as Pauline Martin •&nbsp;&nbsp;Rachel Hein as Mary O’Loughlin, written by her great-granddaughter •&nbsp;&nbsp;Jordan Gajewski as pharmacist Charles Ed Sidlinger •&nbsp;&nbsp;Matt Christian as Nick Spainer •&nbsp;&nbsp;Will Miller as Ben Butler, a former slave •&nbsp;&nbsp;Jason Probst as former mayor George Washington Hardy •&nbsp;&nbsp;Eli Jackson as attorney James Uttered Brown

All of the figures portrayed are buried in Eastside Cemetery.

Zimmerman credits a team of local writers and historians — Christi Grunwald, Donna Davis, Tony Loewen, Gina Long, Joe Woody, and Tyler Davis — for crafting the monologues that bring each story to life. Many actors also conducted their own research to accurately portray the personalities and experiences of those they represent.

Two performances will be offered: a seated show at 5 p.m. for those unable to walk the grounds, followed by walking tours beginning at 7:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to arrive around 7 p.m. to be placed in guided groups. Volunteers will lead each tour safely through the cemetery by lantern light.

“We even have a contingency plan if the weather turns bad,” Zimmerman said. “If needed, we’ll move the performances to the mausoleum and make it work.”

Talking Tombstones is supported by numerous community sponsors, including Eagle Media, Dillons Credit Union, First National Bank, Commerce Bank, Decker &amp; Mattison, the Hutchinson Community Foundation, Memorial Art, Bogey’s, Chris Corey Insurance, Craft Electric, and Wayne’s Printing.

Washington is shut down – again – and Americans have every right to be frustrated. Once again, the dysfunction in D.C. threatens to disrupt lives far beyond the Beltway. And while the political blame game plays out, Kansans are left wondering how this gridlock will affect their families and their livelihoods.

It’s important to know how we got here in the first place. A clean, short-term funding bill — known as a continuing resolution — was introduced by Republicans to keep the government open for seven more weeks.

This measure would have given Congress the time to complete the normal appropriations process, work towards a balanced budget, and hammer out the details of next year’s funding. But to pass in the Senate, the bill needed bipartisan support — at least 60 votes — which means cooperation across the aisle. Unfortunately, that cooperation didn’t transpire.

Like many Americans, I am frustrated that we are in this situation. But while some federal offices may close their doors or scale back operations, I want to be clear with the people of Kansas: my office is open, and we’re still working for you.

Whether you are a farmer navigating USDA programs, a veteran in need of assistance, a federal worker who's been furloughed, a foreigner in need of a Visa, or a senior who relies on Social Security or is signing up for Medicare for the first time, my office is here and ready to help.

Hardworking Kansans shouldn’t have to pay the price for Washington’s dysfunction. The everyday needs of Americans are not put on pause while the government is shut down – and that is why constituent services have always been, and will continue to be, one of my top priorities.

Right now, constituent services are even more important. I understand that this shutdown creates real-life challenges for hardworking people, and my office is committed to ensuring Kansans get the answers they need.

I remain hopeful that five Democrats will vote with us to reopen the government sooner rather than later. But until that happens, know this: our doors are open, our phones are on, and we will continue to serve Kansans — shutdown or not.

TOPEKA— The Kansas Supreme Court has reappointed 28 chief judges across the state to new two-year terms beginning January 1, 2026, and ending December 31, 2027.

Among the local reappointments are Chief Judge Daniel Gilligan of the 27th Judicial District, which covers Reno County, and Chief Judge William Mott of the 30th Judicial District, which includes Barber, Harper, Kingman, Pratt, and Sumner counties.

Chief Judge Daniel Gilligan has served as a district judge since 2022 and as chief judge since 2024.
A graduate of Wichita State University and Washburn University School of Law, Gilligan began his career with Kansas Legal Services and later worked for the Reno County District Attorney’s Office before his appointment to the bench in 2019.

South Central Kansas – 30th Judicial District

Chief Judge William Mott has served as a district judge since 2007 and as chief judge since 2017.
Mott earned degrees from Friends University and Washburn University School of Law. Before becoming a judge, he practiced law in Wellington, served as Sumner County Attorney, and worked as a special assistant U.S. attorney in Wichita.

Each of Kansas’ 31 judicial districts has a chief judge who not only hears cases but also oversees case assignments, court administration, and the management of judicial staff and resources. The Kansas Supreme Court makes these appointments every two years to ensure consistency and leadership across the state’s court system.

The Hutchinson Zoo is gearing up for its 32nd annual Boo at the Zoo, a beloved community tradition that invites families to celebrate Halloween with animals, games, candy, and plenty of fun.

The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 25th, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Hutchinson Zoo. Families are encouraged to come dressed in their best non-scary costumes and enjoy an afternoon filled with sweet treats and festive activities.

Presented by Country 102.9, Prairie Star Health Center, and Midwest Superstore, this year’s Boo at the Zoo will once again feature trick-or-treat stations, engaging animal encounters, and special Keeper Chats: Halloween Edition, where guests can meet the zookeepers and learn about some of the Zoo’s coolest — and maybe spookiest — residents.

Children can also enjoy the Jumper Slide bounce house, provided by Inflate-o-Fun, and take a ride on the Prairie Thunder train for a scenic trip through the back prairie of the Zoo.

Today's "Throwback Thursday Collection" takes us to the 300 block of West 19th on the north side.

In about 1921, Charles Carey (Emerson's son), who was the general manager, secretary and treasurer of the Central Fibre Products Co. (Paperboard Mill), decided to build a huge stone home at 300 W. 19th Ave. The first photo shows the front (south side) of that home, named the Carey Mansion.

The second photo shows the home in a winter scene.

In 1943, Charles and Alice decided to build a home in Willowbrook with the rest of the Carey clan. But finding a succeeding buyer for the high-maintenance-cost home proved difficult.

In 1944, mansion ownership shifted over to St. Elizabeth's Hospital, which converted it into the nun's home and the St. Elizabeth's Hospital School of Nursing. The third photo shows the mansion during that time frame.

The fourth photo is an aerial showing the huge area plat that the mansion took up in about 1950.

That ownership continued until 1954, but maintenance costs were still overwhelming and the mansion was razed. The property was subdivided into four parcels. Homes were built on two of those parcels by Ray Dillon and Nation Meyer. The fifth photo shows two-of-the-four properties: 310 W. 19th, owned by Sara &amp; Wiggins Zandre, and 300 W. 19th, owned by Val LaClair.

📷 Throwback Thursday: Carey Mansion - Vol. 145

Hutchinson Public Schools is one of only three school districts in Kansas to berecognized by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Kansas State Board of Education for achieving a Silver Star for excellence in preparing students for kindergarten. This honor highlights USD 308’s commitment to early childhood education and its strong partnerships with families and the community. 

The Kansas State Department of Education emphasizes that a child’s path to lifelong success begins well before kindergarten. Early learning experiences and strong community partnerships play a vital role in preparing children for school and life.

Through its Kansans Can Star Recognition program, KSDE honors districts and communities that provide high-quality, inclusive early childhood opportunities for young children and their families. The goal is to ensure every child enters kindergarten at age five socially, emotionally, and academically ready to learn and succeed. 

Hutchinson Public Schools also received recognition in two additional areas.  <li>Provide leadership and supervision to nursing staff to ensure quality resident care.
</li><li>Collaborate with the DON to maintain adequate staffing coverage at all times.
</li><li>Assist in hiring, training, scheduling, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
</li><li>Support and mentor new employees, ensuring they are properly oriented to their roles.
</li><li>Step in to perform nursing duties when necessary to ensure quality care delivery.
</li>
 </ul><h2>Infection Prevention</h2><ul>
 <li>Serve as the facility’s Infection Preventionist.
</li><li>Ensure staff follow all infection control policies, universal precautions, and safe waste disposal procedures.
</li><li>Monitor residents displaying infection symptoms and implement appropriate precautions.
</li><li>Communicate infection control updates to staff, administration, and other departments.
</li>
 </ul><h2>Resident Care Coordination</h2><ul>
 <li>Oversee therapeutic programming and ensure individualized care plans are followed.
</li><li>Evaluate resident care, participate in care plan meetings, and communicate changes promptly.
</li><li>Address resident and family concerns with professionalism and compassion.
</li><li>Respond to and report all incidents, accidents, or medication errors per policy.
</li><li>Monitor wound care, coordinate lab work, x-rays, and physician appointments.
</li><li>Ensure proper medication and treatment administration and accurate documentation.
</li><li>Participate in discharge planning and coordinate admissions, transfers, and dismissals.
</li>
 </ul><h2>Nursing Administration</h2><ul>
 <li>Enforce nursing policies and procedures according to regulations and The Wesley standards.
</li><li>Assist the DON with survey preparation, compliance reviews, and implementation of new regulations.
</li><li>Participate in problem-solving and departmental systems development.
</li><li>Delegate responsibilities appropriately based on staff licensure and skill level.
</li><li>Maintain a professional, positive image when interacting with residents, families, and colleagues.
</li>
 </ul><h2>Qualifications</h2><ul>
 <li>Current Kansas LPN or RN license (required).
</li><li>Experience in long-term care and/or nursing management (preferred).
</li><li>Certified Infection Preventionist (preferred).
</li><li>Strong assessment and critical thinking skills related to geriatric care.
</li><li>Knowledge of all state and federal regulations for skilled nursing facilities.
</li><li>Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
</li><li>Ability to work effectively across departments and with leadership teams.
