HUTCHiNSON, Kan. – Two outstanding Hutchinson Community College students were recognized as the 2025 Young Kansan Award winners at a ceremony on campus on April 29. The students will also be honored during the College’s commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 9.

Maggy Adolf (Moundridge) and Key’ahn Taylor (Junction City) were selected from a field of students nominated for the honor. The Young Kansan award recognizes two outstanding graduates each year at Hutchinson Community College and is chosen by a vote of the faculty and administration at the college.

The award is sponsored by RCB Bank. Each winner received a plaque and a cash honorarium in recognition of their achievements.

Maggy is a graduate of Moundridge High School and a proud alumna of the HutchCC Cosmetology program. Currently, she is working toward a degree in Business Management and Entrepreneurship, driven by her ambition to one day open her own salon. Maggy holds the distinction of being a Leadership Scholar and also serves as a Student Ambassador for the Admissions Department. She is an active member of CrossPoint Challenge, contributes to the Dance Club as a board member, and supports fellow students through her role in the Student Success Center.

Key’ahn is a graduate of Junction City High School and is completing the HutchCC Fire Science program. In addition, he serves as a Resident Assistant in the Residence Halls and actively participates in several student organizations, including the Student Firefighter Association, Student Government, and Dance Club. HutchCC recognizes 2025 Young Kansan Award winners

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A two-story brick home was destroyed early Tuesday morning in a fire along South K-14 Highway in Reno County, authorities said.

Reno County Fire Districts 8, 9 and Pretty Prairie Fire were dispatched at 12:58 a.m. to the 8800 block of South K-14, where the house was reported fully engulfed in flames. The response was quickly upgraded, with additional crews from Fire Districts 3, 4, 6 and the Hutchinson Fire Department called to assist.

Reno County EMS provided firefighter rehabilitation on scene. The Reno County Sheriff’s Office, South Hutchinson Police Department and the Kansas Department of Transportation assisted with traffic control, closing K-14 for several hours to allow for a water shuttle operation.

No injuries were reported. The home was a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Hutchinson CTE Academy FFA to hold plant sale on May 1 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two iconic bands from the 1960s will bring a wave of nostalgia to the Fox Theater next week, as The Association and The Cowsills take the stage for a special night of live music on Saturday, May 3.

Josh Davies, executive director of the Fox Theater, announced the upcoming show as part of the venue’s lively spring season, which also includes classic films, a summer kids’ series, and weekend movie events. But it’s the live music, Davies said, that truly brings the historic venue to life.

“This is going to be a nostalgic evening of the greatest music of the 1960s,” Davies said. “We’ve had a number of groups from that era, but these two haven’t performed here before. It just felt like the right time.”

The show pairs The Association, best known for timeless hits such as “Wendy,” “Cherish,” and “Never My Love,” with The Cowsills, the real-life family band that inspired the television series The Partridge Family. The Cowsills will open the evening, followed by a headlining performance from The Association.

Davies said the idea to book both groups came after discovering they shared the same agent. While not part of a prearranged tour, the pairing echoes popular throwback concert events like the “Happy Together Tour,” which regularly features acts from the 1960s and ’70s.

“There are still some original members performing with both bands,” Davies said. “It adds something really special for fans who grew up with their music.”

Tickets are already selling well, and season ticket holders can find their passes to the May 3 show included in their ticket packages.

“If you love music from the ’60s, this is the show for you,” Davies said.

Classic pop groups to perform Saturday at the Fox Theatre

The Hutchinson Monarchs' season is just around the corner. &nbsp;Earlier this year they stated that they still need host families for the upcoming season, and they need more families than last year. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Owner Marc Blackim explained how important the host families are to the program. &nbsp;“The host family portion of our program is the most important. If I don't have housing for these young men, then we just can't, we can't run the program.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blackim says that they need even more families than they ever have had. &nbsp;He said that in past years we have had a bunch of young men from HutchCC and they were in an apartment, so that took care of three or four of them. &nbsp;This year, the players are dorm residents, so they need to find hosts for those players. &nbsp;

The Monarchs season runs from the end of May until the end of July. Players report on May 26th and the season begins on May 30th. &nbsp;&nbsp;

A host family is a family that is willing to open up their home to a young man, provide a roof over his head and a bed to sleep in. &nbsp;The family also provides some food for him, and the Monarchs take care of some of the food as well. They also provide a place so that the player has a place to do their laundry. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blackim expects the players to become part of the family. &nbsp;The host family sets the rules, and the players become involved with the family. &nbsp;He says that they expect the players to get involved with the kids, stuff they have going on in the summer and any other family events that mom and dad want them involved in. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Blackim tells us a about a relationship he has with two players from year two of the Monarchs. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The second year we got involved with summer Collegiate Baseball, two of the young men that we hosted from California still come to our house for Thanksgiving time and and they're they still come for Thanksgiving” Blackim said. &nbsp;

The USD 308 Board of Education approved a $109,530,000 bond proposal during its meeting Monday evening, setting the stage for major facility improvements across the district.

The bond would fund enhancements to elementary school buildings, the construction of a new sixth through eighth grade middle school, and renovations to the existing Hutchinson Middle School building. That facility would be repurposed to house an early learning center and a student services facility. The bond would also finance the relocation of the district’s baseball and soccer fields currently located at 23rd Avenue and Severance Street.

Rather than calling for a special election, the board opted to place the bond issue on the ballot for the Nov. 4 general election.

In other action, the board established the out-of-district enrollment capacity for the 2025-26 school year.&nbsp;

The board looked at the historical numbers for enrollment dating back to the 2018-19 school year.&nbsp;

Those numbers show that the district had an attendance high of 4,277 students in 2019-19 and an attendance low of 4,000 students in the 2022-23 school year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

District officials offered the following enrollment projections for the upcoming school year and the non-resident enrollment capacity for the upcoming school year.&nbsp;

 If a non-resident student in the current school year elects to continue to attend in the Hutchinson School District next year, they are not considered part of the Non-resident Student Enrollment Capacity, but are in the 2025-26 enrollment projections&nbsp;

The next USD 308 Board of Education meeting is scheduled for May 12.

USD 308 Board approves $109.5 million bond proposal, sets election for November 4

TOPEKA, Kan.&nbsp; – Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Secretary Christopher Kennedy has issued orders designating several Free Fishing and Free State Park Entrance days. The announcement was made at the April 24, 2025, Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission meeting.

The Free Fishing Days are June 7 and 8, 2025. On those days, anyone can fish by legal means without a Kansas fishing license. All length and creel limits still apply.

All Kansas State Parks will also offer free entrance on Saturday, May 3. Camping fees still apply.

“I encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy Kansas’ incredible natural resources,” said Kennedy. “Whether you're casting a line, hiking a trail, picnicking on a beach, or simply taking in the beauty of nature, these days are meant to inspire connection with your family, friends, and the great outdoors.”

Along with these statewide events, Secretary Kennedy has also designated several park-specific Free Entrance Days that align with local events and programs designed to engage families, outdoor enthusiasts, and newcomers to Kansas state parks. These dates are as follows:

UPDATE:&nbsp; Captain Dayton Gates of the Hutchinson Police Department tells us that they collected 121 pounds of unused prescriptions at the event on April 26.&nbsp;

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Police Department, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, will host the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dillon’s Marketplace, 3200 Plaza East Drive.

The event offers residents a safe, free and anonymous way to dispose of unneeded prescription medications. Tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms of prescription drugs will be accepted. Liquids, such as cough syrup, must be sealed in their original containers with caps tightly secured to prevent leaks. Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs will not be accepted.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has helped Americans safely discard more than 19.2 million pounds of medications since the program began over a decade ago, preventing old or unused prescriptions from becoming a source of misuse or addiction.

Hutchinson Police collects 121 pounds of unused prescription drugs at takeback event 

WICHITA, Kan. — A Hutchinson man has been sentenced to more than 12 years in federal prison for distributing child sexual abuse material, authorities said Monday.

Zachary Charles Hiskey, 27, pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography, according to court documents.

In June 2021, Hiskey used an account on the messaging app Kik to share videos depicting adult males engaged in sexually explicit acts with prepubescent children. Kik detected the videos and reported the account to law enforcement through a cyber tipline, leading investigators to additional child exploitation materials tied to Hiskey’s email account and to internet activity at his home, officials said.

During a search of Hiskey’s residence, investigators found an electronic device displaying a browser thumbnail of recently viewed child sexual abuse material. A forensic analysis also revealed that the Kik account had been installed and later deleted from Hiskey’s cellphone, according to authorities.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation handled the investigation.

The McPherson Fire Department was dispatched around 7:31 a.m. Monday to the intersection of 17th Avenue and Eisenhower Road for a reported structure fire. Crews responded with two engine companies and a tender, with additional tenders from the Galva and Moundridge fire departments.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a small barn fully involved in flames. The structure had partially collapsed, with the roof falling inward, officials said. Fire crews attacked the fire from the exterior using hose lines.

Two horses located near the fire were moved to safety by bystanders and the property owners, who were working to keep them cool before firefighters arrived. However, two other horses inside the barn were unable to escape and perished in the fire.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation, though no foul play is suspected.

The pickup rear-ended the&nbsp; single axes flat-bed trailer pulled by a 2018 Toyota Rav4 and driven by George A. Sanders, 78, Stafford.&nbsp; The impact caused the trailer to detach and come to rest in the center median.

Kansas State University's College of Veterinary Medicine invites elementary, middle school, high school and college students to explore the world of veterinary medicine at the 2025&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/admissions/rocks/">Vet Med ROCKS</a>&nbsp;summer camps.

The series of day camps for youth will take place July 28-30 and are hosted by the Vet Med Recruitment and Outreach Club at Kansas State University, or Vet Med ROCKS, a student organization in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vet.k-state.edu/">College of Veterinary Medicine</a>.

Vet Med ROCKS is an immersive opportunity for students to experience veterinary medicine in a fun, hands-on and educational environment with current Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students and veterinary faculty and staff. The camps offer interactive activities, expert-led workshops and career insights for participants interested in becoming veterinarians.

"Vet Med ROCKS is an exciting opportunity for kids to dive into the world of veterinary medicine," said Maeve McDonald, second-year veterinary student and summer camp chair for Vet Med ROCKS. "This year, we're putting an emphasis on fun, hands-on labs and real-world learning experiences. I'm excited for participants to learn practical veterinary medicine skills and spark their curiosity to inspire the next generation of animal health professionals!"

Callie Rost, assistant dean for admissions in the College of Veterinary Medicine, said last year's in-person camps hosted 56 elementary students, 101 middle school students, and 99 high school and college students.

"We are looking forward to the eighth consecutive Vet Med ROCKS Camp," Rost said. "This unique program is designed to expose young, passionate students to the world of veterinary medicine and surgery. Through hands-on experiences at the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine, participants explore real-life procedures and gain valuable insight into the field, fueling their interest in animal healthcare and encouraging the next generation of veterinary professionals."

High school students entering grades nine through 12 will attend on July 28, middle school students entering sixth through eighth grades will attend on July 29, and elementary school students entering third through fifth grades will attend on July 30.

Vet Med ROCKS camps return to K-State this July

In a legislative session marked by its brevity, Kansas lawmakers managed to pass an impressive 116 bills. This makes 2025 a productive year for the state’s legislature. But while this productivity could suggest functional governance, a closer look reveals a shift in the balance of power that raises questions about the state of checks and balances in Topeka.

Democratic Governor Laura Kelly, operating with a Republican Legislature, signed into law more than 90 bills, demonstrating that our two major parties can work together when they find common ground. The legislature and governor addressed important topics, ranging from the sustainability of Kansas’ water supply to the opioid epidemic to broadband infrastructure. Many of these bills had broad support, passing both chambers with ease. And even when Kelly did have issues, she allowed 8 bills to become law without signing them, which is indication of compromise, not obstruction.

But this spirit of cooperation was balanced by a record-breaking exercise of legislative muscle. Fourteen of Kelly's 18 vetoes were overridden, the most during her tenure. That in and of itself is a sign of the growing power of Republican supermajorities and the increasingly diminishing role of the executive branch in shaping final policy outcomes.

It's not easy to override a veto. It takes two-thirds majority in both houses, which is 84 votes in the House and 27 in the Senate. That the legislature was able to do so 14 times speaks of a branch of government comfortable with its supremacy. In recent sessions, veto overrides were less prevalent. The 2025 session is a departure from that norm.

Furthermore, the legislature enacted changes to the budgeting process this year. The budget reform shifted actual power away from the Governor by allowing a new legislative committee to introduce their baseline budget early in the session. Rather than being the opening offer for negotiation, Governor Laura Kelly's proposed budget was a supplemental proposal. Supporters of the budget reform argued that these changes were not personally aimed at Kelly’s administration. However, the new budget process coupled with the record number of veto overrides paint the picture of a legislature increasingly inclined to bypass the governor's authority.

Though this session's productivity can be seen as an accomplishment, it is not the only measure of governmental achievement. In the coming years, Kansas will need to contend with a basic question: Can government ever be a sincere system of check and balance if one branch so consistently overrules the other?

Preserving checks and balances is something we should be care about. Enacting legislation is an important part of governing but ensuring that each branch can effectively check the others is essential to a healthy democracy. The erosion of the governor's check on legislative power should concern Kansans. Bipartisanship will persist in some policy realms, but the veto override trend and new budget process suggest a Legislature more at ease forging ahead without the governor.

Insight Kansas:  Power balance swings towards Kansas Legislature 

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A woman accused of driving a stolen vehicle that was involved in a crash that killed a Hutchinson woman is going to prison.

On Monday, Judge Seth Rundle sentenced Katelyn Barrioz, 24 of Wichita, to nearly 20-years in prison.  She was sentenced to 216 months for 2nd degree murder, 7 months for flee and elude, and 7 months for theft with 36 months post release supervision, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's offce. The judge ordered the sentences run consecutive.

On April 14, Barrioz pled guilty to the charges.

On October 27, police located an occupied stolen vehicle at the Riverwalk Apartments, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. Officers monitored the vehicle using unmarked cars, and air support was requested from the Kansas Highway Patrol.

&nbsp;The vehicle stopped at Walmart, 29th and Rock Road in Wichita. Officers deployed spike strips to prevent the vehicle from leaving, successfully deflating two tires.

Despite this, the suspect later identified as Barrioz, fled the Walmart parking lot, striking a police vehicle.

Officers did not pursue the vehicle, but KHP air support continued to track it from above. The vehicle proceeded to a business on North Webb Road, where two individuals exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

One individual was apprehended, while&nbsp; Barrioz stole the van from the business and fled south on Webb, then west on 29th Street, according to Gupilan.

KHP Air maintained surveillance of the stolen vehicle, which, at 29th and Wilderness, collided with a&nbsp; Chevy Cobalt.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the stolen 2024 Ford Transit Van driven by Barrioz, 24, Wichita, was westbound in the eastbound lanes in the&nbsp;8700 block of E 29th St N in Wichita traveling in the inside lane.

The van struck an eastbound 2010 Chevy Cobalt driven by Mandy Lynn&nbsp;Buckwalter, 43, Hutchinson, head-on.

Buckwalter was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Barrioz to Wesley Medical Center for treatment. She was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail later that week, according to online jail records.&nbsp;

City leaders are considering two options for Memorial Hall: selling the property to a private developer for adaptive reuse or demolishing the structure to create a public green or gathering space.

Officials say the meeting is an important opportunity for residents to share their views and help shape the future of the site. A facilitation plan for the event is still being finalized to ensure that all voices are heard.

City to hold public meeting over future of Memorial Hall on May 8 

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After a four-year hiatus, Fly Hutch, the Hutchinson Regional Airport’s fly-in and open house, returns May 3 with a full day of activities, aircraft displays and family-friendly fun.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free to the public, said Doug Bennett, a member of the airport’s advisory committee. Highlights include a wide variety of vintage and military aircraft, a classic car show, a pancake breakfast, food trucks, and Country 102.9 and My 93-1 will be there.

“We’re excited to bring Fly Hutch back,” Bennett said. “It’s a great opportunity for the community to get up close to historic planes and even take a flight.”

Aircraft scheduled to appear include a Douglas AC-47 "Spooky" gunship, a B-25 Mitchell bomber, and a P-51 Mustang Reno Air Racer. Several aircraft will offer rides for purchase, including a C-45 Expeditor and a UC-78 Bobcat.

Younger attendees can participate in free Young Eagle flights, offered for children ages 8 to 17 through the Experimental Aircraft Association. Registration will take place inside the hangar marked "Hutchinson."

Other activities include a weather balloon launch at 10:30 a.m. and two aerial firefighting water drop demonstrations by Tanker 95, a fire bomber based in Hutchinson. The drops are scheduled for late morning and early afternoon.

Food vendors will be on site, with six food trucks offering a variety of meals and snacks.

Bennett, a professional airline pilot who earned his private license at Hutchinson Regional Airport in 1996, said he hopes the event will inspire future aviators, especially as the aviation industry prepares for a wave of retirements starting in 2028.

"Flying has been a lifelong passion for me," he said. "We hope Fly Hutch shows young people what’s possible."

STERLING, Kan. — Amy Brownlee, longtime librarian for Sterling Public Schools, is preparing for an educational journey across the Atlantic after being selected for a prestigious teachers' study trip to Germany.

Brownlee, who has served as Sterling’s librarian for 25 years, was recently chosen to participate in the Transatlantic Outreach Program, sponsored by the German organization Atlantik-Brücke. The 10-day trip will take her to Berlin, Munich and Dresden, where she and other educators will study modern German education, politics, economy, and culture.

“This will be an exciting opportunity for me,” Brownlee said. “My knowledge of Germany is very historical. I’m excited to learn about modern Germany and build connections that I can share with students and fellow teachers.”

Unlike typical leisure travel, the program emphasizes professional development and cultural exchange. Participants will meet with German business professionals, visit schools, tour museums and experience cultural events.

Brownlee, who grew up in Medicine Lodge, Kan., and studied English education at Bethany College, said she views these experiences as a way to enrich her students' learning.

“When I bring back artifacts, photos and first-hand stories, it really ignites my students’ excitement for learning,” she said. “It’s so much more meaningful than just seeing a picture online.”

This isn’t the first time Brownlee has blended travel with education. Last summer, she attended a professional development workshop at Comic-Con International in San Diego, learning how to integrate comics into curriculum.

In addition to her Germany trip, Brownlee will attend the White House History Teacher Institute in Washington, D.C., in July. Sponsored by the White House Historical Association, the program offers K-12 educators behind-the-scenes access to historical resources and primary documents related to the White House and American history.

She encourages educators to seek out similar opportunities, noting that application periods usually fall between December and March.Her trip to Germany will begin June 7. Following the program, Brownlee plans to spend an additional two weeks traveling through Europe with her husband.When she returns, Brownlee hopes to share her experiences not only with students, but also with community groups and civic organizations in Sterling.“I would love to share what I learned with any group that’s interested,” she said. “It’s an amazing opportunity, and I’m excited to bring it home.”
