HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A large detached garage fire threatened nearby homes Wednesday evening in the 300 block of West Avenue A, according to the Hutchinson Fire Department.
Crews responded at 6:24 p.m. Sept. 30 after receiving a report of a structure fire with possible occupants trapped. Hutchinson police officers arrived first and determined that no one was trapped.
Firefighters began defensive operations to bring the fire under control and protect neighboring structures to the west. Crews also coordinated a search of a nearby home for possible occupants.
A large amount of stored material and deteriorating building conditions complicated firefighting efforts. Crews brought the fire under control in approximately 25 minutes.
The department said hose placement and defensive operations helped limit damage to the home immediately west of the garage, allowing residents to return home.
Reno County EMS evaluated two people who were near the fire for non-life-threatening issues. Both declined transportation to a hospital.
The Hutchinson fire marshal is investigating. A cause has not been determined.
